— EDITORIAL — The Iran “Deal” Obama’s Tarnished Legacy?

A rendering of the proposed New Hampshire Global War on Terror Memorial to be installed on the Memorial Walkway at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. Fundraising efforts are presently courtesy Photo underway in anticipation of a September 11, 2016 dedication.

Honoring The NH Fallen In The Global War on Terror For anyone over the age of twenty, the date of September 11, 2001, will always bring forth the feeling of the day everything changed. To the thousands of brave soldiers who strapped on gear and rose to the challenge of what that day had created, it wasn’t just September 11th that was now significant, but

each and every day after as so many lost their lives fighting a new Global War on Terror in the streets and countrysides of Iraq and Afghanistan. Preston Lawrence of Loudon, New Hampshire, on a visit to the Vermont State Veterans Cemetery in East Randolph, Vermont, to visit the grave of a friend was touched deeply

when he saw that cemetery’s Global War on Terror Memorial which recognized the fallen soldiers from Vermont in that ongoing struggle. It was there that the root of the idea to have the same kind of memorial at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen took hold. See memorial on 40

NEW YORK - A rhetorical tsunami followed the signing of the landmark nuclear limitation deal between Iran and six world powers in Vienna. On the one hand President Barack Obama and his tireby John J. less Secretary of State Metzler Syndicated Columnist John Kerry presented a technically well-crafted plan which would supposedly keep the Iranian nuclear genie in the bottle but not dismantle the actual atomic program. On the other, deep bi-partisan skepticism in Washington greeted the deal with the nervous concern that it will not really stop Tehran’s long-term nuclear capabilities. Now the accord faces a showdown in the U.S. Congress. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly called the deal a “stunning historical mistake.” Announcing the historic accord between the USA and the Islamic Republic of Iran, President Obama used the word “deal” 29 times! The word deal has a far different nuance and connotation than accord or agreement. Deals are often associated with used cars while accords are better linked with diplomacy. I’m surprised given the linguistic optics, that the State Department would not have opted to use a less edgy term. But a deal is what we have with Iran’s clerical regime. The suffocating economic and military sanctions slapped on Iran by both the United Nations Security Council and the United States will soon be lifted allowing for a massive jumpstart for the moribund Iranian economy. Ending an Iranian asset freeze moreover

“The Ghost Army of World War II at Wright Museum On Tuesday, July 28 at 7pm, The Wright Museum of WWII in Wolfeboro presents a lecture and book signing by author Rick Beyer: “The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sounds Effects and Other Audacious Fakery.” This brand new book by Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles tells the fascinating story of this top secret unit, which was called the “Ghost Army.” In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of young G.I.s landed in France to conduct a secret mission. Armed with truckloads of inflatable tanks, a massive collection of soundeffects records, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, their job was to create a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience. Tom Brokaw said of the book: “The Ghost Army of World War II describes a perfect example of a little-known, highly imaginative, and daring maneuver that helped open the way for the final drive to Germany. It is a riveting tale.” After his lecture, Beyer will autograph copies of his book which are for sale in the Museum gift store. Admission is $8 per person and free for Wright Museum members. Space is limited RSVPs are strongly encouraged to ensure sufficient seating for all lecture attendees. Call 603569-1212 to reserve your seat today. The Wright Museum is located at 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH.

Let Congress Hear You To The Editor: Many seniors will tell you they don’t know how they’d get along without Medicare. The 50th anniversary of this very important program is coming July 30. Medicare has done so much, and it can do even more which is why the anniversary is the perfect time to expand coverage to include hearing aids and hearing exams. Seniors with untreated hearing loss don’t do as well physically or emotionally as seniors with normal hearing. But hearing aids are too expensive for millions of seniors who need them. Some in Congress are pressing forward with legislation so that Medicare can cover hearing loss treatments much like any other physical condition. Congress needs to hear from all of us in regards to our grandparents and aging parents, and thank them for protecting medicare, but please ask them to support expanding the coverage. It is the right thing to do and now is the right time to get it done. Jan Dunn Stratham, NH. NORTH CONWAY SUMMER HOURS

Response To Sherwood To The Editor: Normally I gain perspective from reading reader letters to the editor; however, I feel the need to rebut Phil Sherwood’s

Our Story

letter in the July 9 issue. He targets Marco Rubio as being a confirmed “climate change denier, and by extension, lacks the leadership qualities to occupy the White House. He then seems to postulate that Solar Energy is the energy source that will reverse global warming while adding thousands of jobs. This is simplistic thinking at its worst. Sherwood even twists or takes a few Rubio comments out of context. The first thing to acknowledge is that Senator Marco Rubio is a strong supporter of conservation. His record and his policy positions prove that to be the case. He is all for meaningful and qualified measures to enhance nature as well as to protect the environment. His conservation leadership in Florida and in Washington is well acknowledged. The second thing to recognize is that “climate change denier is a label applied broadly by those who are disturbed by anyone who disagrees with their position (i.e., human generated emissions are the single greatest cause for global warming). The truth is that the science on global warming and cooling is indeed unsettled. The internet offers many dozens of portals to realize how conflicting and debatable scientific studies are on this subject. No matter what side of the equation you support, there are in my opinion - only three

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

relevant questions to be addressed: 1) “To what degree do human-created emissions actually affect global warming and cooling? A subjective response is invalid. Only a truly meaningful fact-based answer is relevant. There are noted scientists whose studies and research lead them to believe the effect is less than 5%, and some who believe it is as little as 2%. There are also studies that indicate the human impact is higher. Activists, various stars in the Entertainment Industry, and certain politicians would have you believe the human-generated emissions are the overwhelming cause of climate change. That is simply wrong. But those falsehoods are repeated so often and so strongly by “popular figures that our citizenry have come to accept them. Point is, this is NOT a subject for emotional assumptions. So, when Senator Rubio states that “the science is unsettled he is right ..... not wrong ...... as Mr. Sherwood states. 2) “Even if the United States government were to adopt and to enforce the strictest environmental laws imaginable, what would be the net effect on global warming and cooling? The answer: Negligible. Anyone who believes that the U.S. can convince the rest of the world to adopt those same environmental laws and enforcement must be livSee mail boat on 32

Writing About Stuff

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I have written in this column before about my concern with some expressions that are used with reckless abandon by a growing number of Americans. Once contained to just a few, these expressions have now grown like weeds across the once beautiful garden of the English language. The first and most obvious of these unsightly growths is the expression “No problem. An expression which has come to be used by anyone and everyone who is about to do something for someone else, even if it is something they are being paid to perform and there is no reason that it should be considered a problem in the first place. It seems every business you now enter, which exists to perform a service worthy of you giving up your hard earned money, will now have their employees tell you that it is “no problem to perform that service for you in order to take your money. Just listen; you will hear it everywhere. Customer At Restaurant: I have decided on what item I would like to pay my hard earned money on that you are offering to sell to me in order for your business to survive and I need you now to take my order. Waiter: No problem. I could go on but I think you understand. (At least I hope you do.) The next expression

which has not been as widespread but is beginning to pick up steam is “stuff like that. If you pay attention you will hear it just about everywhere. It is not a new expression, but I used to hear it only rarely, used by someone whose general grasp of the spoken English language wasn’t the best in the first place. I used to think that the repetitious repeating of phrases such as “stuff like that and the rest were the realm of the younger generation and wasn’t too concerned. They would grow out of it. But it has gotten worse. Today it is fast becoming another lazy expression to help move along already indecipherable sentences full of “likes and “literallys and “you knows spoken by people you would be expecting better from. My ears perked up one evening when I heard a middle-aged renowned scientist on television explaining a complex study he had been a part of. In order not to bore the audience too much he decided, wisely, to finish off by explaining there were many other studies done with the same results. But instead of ending with the more scholarly “as well as other similar studies he finished with “and stuff like that. I’m not kidding. OMG! He wasn’t the only one. I began to listen more closely and I started to hear it more and more from the mouths of people you’d never imagine it from. Was it always there or is it just starting to spread like a bad fungus? Expressions like these are becoming an ingrained part of our culture now so I guess we have to live with them. I haven’t heard it yet, but I am hoping I won’t ever have a discussion like this with a younger doctor: “If we don’t treat it now it

could lead to more serious conditions like a heart attack and stuff like that. “What should I do now doctor? “Well, you should like literally, you know, lay in bed and literally drink like, you know, lots of fluids because your head could like literally explode and stuff like that. “Okay. Thank you. “No problem. I can only imagine how some of the more famous sayings by prominent people in history might sound like if they had said them today. “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country and stuff like that. “It was literally like four score and seven years ago that our fathers literally like brought, on this continent a new nation and stuff like that. “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself and stuff like that. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the idea. I suppose I shouldn’t let these kinds of things bother me. I’d imagine that one day, many, many years ago, some kid may have called somebody “Thou once and it caught on, much to the horror of the elders. It took more than a few decades for that one to go by the wayside, but it eventually did. Maybe the day will come when the English language has gotten so bad that we will be pining for the days when people used to say “stuff like that instead of whatever it might be that replaces it. It could literally be like weird, you know? To find out more about Brendan’s books and speaking engagements visit his website at www.brendantsmith.com

The Wine-Sipping Butchers of Planned Parenthood

Hannibal Lecter ain’t got nothing on the profit-maximizing abortion ghoul caught on tape hawking aborted baby by Michelle Malkin parts as she Syndicated Columnist swilled wine and nibbled on a gourmet salad. In newly released undercover footage from the pro-life Center for Medical Progress, seasoned abortionist Dr. Deborah Nucatola, who serves as national senior director of “medical services” at Planned Parenthood, chitterchattered eagerly about fulfilling the bloodthirsty demand for “intact hearts,” “lower extremities” and lungs. Price tag? “You know, I would throw a number out,” she babbled breezily as she twirled her fork. “I would say it’s probably anywhere from $30 to $100” per specimen. Hollywood couldn’t conjure monsters this chillingly, banally evil. Nucatola exulted at how fetal livers have become tres chic: “A LOT of people” want them. She then spoke of the new hot trends in body-parts trafficking as if she were raving about the latest craze for crop tops or artisanal cheese. “I was like wow,” she gushed to her potential clients about the market for unborn baby hearts, “I didn’t even know!” Like wow. This master of murderous euphemism repeatedly referred to an unborn baby’s head as a “calvarium” and casually described the tricks and techniques she and her fellow abortionists use to “increase your chance of suc-

cess.” Rotating the babies so they are delivered breech before being mutilated and slaughtered by the practitioners of Planned Butcherhood works fabulously, in case you were wondering. Pausing only to swig more luxury libations from her jumbo wine glass, the loquacious death doc explained to investigators posing as fetal tissue company executives how her “providers” use “ultrasound guidance” to target the coveted body parts -- “so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps.” In a singsong recitation, this lettuce-chomping Mengele in a silk tank top detailed how the “providers” use ultrasound to become “cognizant of where you put your graspers.” This method is not employed to reduce the pain and suffering of unborn baby and mother, mind you. It’s to get “good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that -- so I’m not gonna crush that part. I’m going to basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.” Think about that. Planned Parenthood has officially declared it “torture” for women to see their unborn children through ultrasound before submitting to abortion. The billion-dollar abortion industry has lobbied vociferously against increasing ultrasound access to pregnant women on the fence about abortion. But when the same imaging technology is used to help Planned Butcherhood’s “providers” place their forceps strategically to protect their precious organ commodities, it’s invaluable “guidance.” Now you know if you didn’t already or if you were in abject denial. Planned Parenthood’s fetish for late-term abortion

Are You Outraged?

The recent video of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s abortion giant, participating in trafficking of aborted baby body parts and by Jane Cormier organs is just Hooksett, NH. gruesome. This gone-viral video is very hard to watch but it is important to do so. There is a 2 hour plus unedited version (with full transcript available) and a shortened video as well. (Just google Planned Parenthood baby body parts video.) It is clear from both versions that abortion clinics are engaging in the practice of partial birth abortion to ensure the desired organs are extracted without damage. Both of these actions are felonies. Buying or selling human body parts is a federal felony. (42 U.S. Code 274e) The commercial trafficking of body parts from an aborted baby is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $500,000. (42 U.S. Code 289g-2) Partial-birth abortion is a federal felony punishable by up to 2 years See malkin on 36 in prison and/or a fine of up to

$250,000. (18 U.S. Code 1531) A fetus extracted intact and alive during an abortion is a born-alive infant under federal law and any further action taken to kill him or her is homicide. (1 U.S. Code 8) Here is a quote from the video: We’ve been good at getting heart, lungs, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part. I’m gonna basically crush below. I’m basically gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact [..] “I’d say a lot of people want liver. And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps. The kind of ratelimiting step of the procedure is calvarium. Calvarium – the head – is basically the biggest part.” Deborah Nucatola, Senior Director, Medical Services, Planned Parenthood Our taxpayer dollars are supporting an organization that not only kill pre-born children, but also sells their body parts. They are profiting from abortions AND the illegal sale of baby body parts. Are you outraged enough to make your voice heard? This video is definitive proof See cormier on 8

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, July 23, 2015

It’s been nearly two years since Thomas Sowell wrote: Only ideologues could devote themselves to crusading by Ken Gorrell against peoNorthfield, NH. ple’s efforts to live and associate with other people who share their values and habits… Undaunted by a long history of disasters when third parties try to mix and match people, or prescribe what kind of housing is best, they act as if this time it has to work. To those with the crusading mentality, failure only means that they should try, try again — at other people’s expense, including not only the taxpayers but also those who lives have been disrupted, or even made miserable and dangerous, by previous bright ideas of third parties who pay no price for being wrong. His topic was the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) proposed rule forcing local communities to bring their zoning laws into compliance with the federal bureaucracy’s idea of suburban Utopia. Those with the crusading mentality have been busy during the intervening months. In July they revealed their latest assault on our constitutional republic of federal enumerated powers: the final draft of their proposed “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” land-use regulations. For

Local Control R.I.P.

those who value their local communities and the quaint notion of local control, this could be the most damaging 377 pages ever added to the Federal Register. Apparently, in living our lives according to our individual desires, we have created an intolerable number of “racist” havens that lack that most valued of modern characteristics, “inclusiveness.” It would be easy to say that this is what happens when we elect a community organizer as president, but this has been coming for a long time. Too many of our fellow Americans are content to disregard our founding documents in their quest to substitute their will for our rights, under the guise of “fairness.” Under the new rules, HUD would be able to shred local zoning laws. In their place, the feds would impose their own set of regulations designed to reshape offending communities into models of “balance” -- racial, socioeconomic, and ethnic parameters all aligned to “nationally uniform data.” The targeted communities would number 1,200 initially, but we all know what happens when government finds a new way to exercise power. The kicker is that the inconvenience of having to prove discrimination would no longer be a barrier; merely existing outside the government’s dataset is enough for a guilty verdict. The federal government and its acolytes are relying on an American version of “taking the King’s shilling,” an 18th and 19th century practice used to press British men into the military. A

man forced by a press gang into the Army or Navy was given the King’s shilling. He was then offered a chance to “volunteer” to become eligible for an advance of wages and more favorable treatment. In our version, local communities are pressed into service using the lure of HUD’s Community Development Block Grants and other subsidies.

Taking HUD’s shilling is tantamount to pressing your entire community into the service of our federal bureaucracy. That’s the carrot. The stick, of course, is the race card and the threat of being hauled into the kangaroo court of data-driven guilt. When we allow our laws and our actions to be trumped by statistics See Gorrell on 42

Is the Civil War Over? In the wake of the recent murders in a South Carolina church, the killer’s hope of igniting a race war produced the opposite by Thomas Sowell effect. Blacks and whites in Syndicated Columnist South Carolina came together to condemn his act and the race hate behind it. Some saw in the decision to remove the Confederate flag from in front of the state house a symbolic repudiation of the old South’s racial past -- and the end of the Civil War. But, unfortunately, wars do not end until both sides decide that it is over. The black parishioners who expressed forgiveness toward the killer did more than most of us could do, and the whites who responded with solidarity did their part. Note how quickly this was done, by ordinary people of good will -- black and white -- without the “help” of racial activists like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. Professional race hustlers have no incentive to see our current civil war end. They see in this shooting only an opportunity to escalate their demands. Now there are rumblings of demands that statues of Robert E. Lee and other Southern leaders be destroyed -- and if that is done, it will only lead to new demands, perhaps to destroy the Jefferson Memorial because Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. And if that is done, no doubt there will be demands that the city of Washington be renamed, for the same reason.

In short, there is no stopping point, just unending strife as far out as the eye can see. And just what will that accomplish? It could ultimately accomplish the killer’s dream of racial polarization and violence. Neither blacks nor whites will be better off if that happens. With all the very real problems in this society, can we really spare the time and the wasted energy of trying to refight a Civil War that ended before our greatgrandparents were born? The past is irrevocable. We cannot change the smallest detail of what some people did to other people after both have gone to their graves. Meanwhile, the old South has already changed. There is no way that the South of the mid-twentieth century would have elected a woman of Indian ancestry to be governor of South Carolina or a man of Indian ancestry to be governor of Louisiana, much less have Southern states that voted for a black President of the United States. Perhaps the strongest evidence of the changes is that the black migrations out of the South a hundred years ago have now reversed -- with younger and better educated blacks leading the new migrations from the North to the South. When people vote with their feet, that tells us a lot more than any polls. If the past is out of our hands, what is in our hands today are the present and the future -and both have big challenges. Whatever policies or practices we consider need to be judged by their actual consequences, not by their rhetoric. See Sowell on 12

that Planned Parenthood participates in the CRIMINAL activity of trafficking the body parts of aborted babies. While the response from Planned Parenthood seeks to indict the video-makers rather than answer the obvious concerns of the public, their response is that “tissue donation is nothing inappropriate. However, directly engaging in the selling of body parts and organs of aborted babies is anything BUT appropriate. Planned Parenthood must be held to account for this illegal and immoral activity. In the past, I’ve often kept the sky simple and somewhat generic, but here I’ve given them more of a role. In watercolor this has in-

In other ones, it’s been the light alone that has interested me in painting the scene. In one case a fairly simple view of a boathouse and shoreline in

“Hate crime laws are on some people’s agenda. But what will such laws actually accomplish? A murderer deserves the death penalty, whether he killed someone of a different race or killed his own twin brother. All that “hate crime laws can do is provide the murderer’s lawyer with another ground on which to appeal the conviction or the sentence. Trying to make up for the past with presentday benefits has a track record that shows many counterproductive consequences. The federal government’s pressures against

schools to not discipline so many black males is another “benefit for blacks that is far from beneficial. It means that a handful of hoodlums in a classroom can prevent all the other black children from getting a decent education, which may be their only chance for a decent life. Another “benefit for blacks that turns out not to be beneficial is giving the police orders to back off during ghetto riots. Whether in Baltimore recently or in Detroit back in the 1960s, the net result has been more people killed, most of them black, and a whole community put on the down-

ward path of physical and social deterioration. We need a lot more serious thinking about the present and the future, and a lot less time and energy spent on the past. Test Tube Hummingbird Feeders, Glass or Plastic? by Steve White Contributing Writer

As long as there have been test tube hummingbird feeders, the most commonly question asked is; “Should I use glass or plastic test tubes? Is there a difference in attracting hummingbirds? Does one material last longer than the other and is one easier to clean? The most obviously difference in test tube hummingbird feeders is that glass will break easier than plastic. If you drop a glass test tube versus a plastic tube, it will probably shatter. However, a plastic tube scratches very easily. Under normal outside elements such as sun and rain, a plastic tube will turn a dingy yellow, whereas glass test tubes are more resilient to weather conditions. Cleaning the two different tubes can also pose a challenge. The sugar/ water hummingbird nectar solution turns rapidly into

a sticky, molasses-type composite. Removing this sticky nectar is more difficult with plastic test tubes than glass. Many people use specifically designed brushes or pipe cleaners in order to get inside test tubes to clean them. These same brushes with stiff bristles are needed to get to the bottom of the test tube hummingbird feeders but tend to scratch the softer, plastic test tubes. Glass tubes are clinically developed products that can withstand the constant cleaning necessary for all hummingbird feeders. Even the red caps on the ends of test tube hummingbird feeders must be taken into consideration when purchasing your gifts. Red caps that fit inside the rim of test tubes are easy to install, but harder to remove than red caps that are designed to go on the outside of the test tube ends. After the nectar solution grips onto the inside surface of test tube hummingbird feeders, it also forms a glue-like bonding on the red caps. If you purchase only the red caps

that fit on the outside of the test tubes, you do not have that sticky, bonding problem. Simply run warm water over any stubborn test tubes and the properly designed red caps come right off the test tube hummingbird feeders. The most overlooked part of any test tube hummingbird feeder is the copper. Many crafters, or anyone wishing to make their own feeder, use the wrong thickness. Copper is extremely flexible which makes it prone to weaknesses in weather conditions. If you use the thinner copper wire to hold the test tubes in place, you will discover your test tubes on the ground in a very short time frame. Enjoy your birds! your first impressions. Your nose will definitely pick up citrus immediately, followed by fruit and some spice notes. A slightly off-white lacing

At 5.5% ABV, Hoplite IPA keeps your attention throughout the entire bottle. Never changing much from top to bottom, this brew uses Belma and Azacca hops which are not widely chosen in more common IPA style beers. Distributed in 22 oz bottles, Kelsen’s great beers can always be found at Case-n-Keg, Meredith and Laconia. BeerAdvocate.com has rated this beer officially as 92 out of 100 which exclaims

their ‘Outstanding’ mark of excellence. Others have given their accolades with 4.2 to 4.75 to 5.0, so Kelsen has really scored big on this great beer! There are some real patriots who are Republicans, but a heck of a lot more that use the party label. Though the GOP is “the stupid party” it seems more appropriate to have the two interchangeable. For those of us who have said from the beginning that we pray that Obama would fail with HIS agenda Hussein has done above and beyond what we thought he would accomplish, or is that demolish? This is what we anticipated: this evil man bent on destroying America and, that smirk on his face as the USA is dismantled. After these past 6 ½ years there is enough to bring disciplinary action to a president who lied to the American people, created a Black vs. White race war, discarded the US Constitution, provided our enemies an easy path to our doorsteps as we have learned. Since Obama’s first apology tour no country or gangs (ISIS) fear what can happen to them. IF the American people place freedom, principles, and love of country above the greedy, hungry for power and non-responsive politicians, we are safe! Barack Hussein Obama

Gee, that reminds me of this NH GOP Unity

we hear so much about. You know; we all come together after the primary? A clear majority of republican legislators voted for former Speaker Bill O’Brien to win the republican caucus. The “ESTABLISHMENT” went to the Democrats in the House and pleaded with them to vote for Jasper to become speaker though O’Brien was the Republican’s choice. The Establishment will ruin the GOP across the land. I think it is time to prepare the obit. I know of many folks who are on the Trump Train to the nomination. Here is what happens when you are not the CHOSEN ONE. People like John McCain (another reason for term limits) and Rick Perry decide Donald just doesn’t fit with the Establishment. Elizabeth Sayles tells the fascinating story of this top secret unit, which was called the "Ghost Army." In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of young G.I.s landed in France to conduct a secret mission. Armed with truckloads of inflatable tanks, a massive collection of sound-effects records, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, their job was to create a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience. Tom Brokaw said of the book: "The Ghost Army of World War II describes a perfect example of a little-known, highly imaginative, and daring maneuver that helped open the way for the final drive to Germany. It is a riveting tale." After his lecture, Beyer will autograph copies of his book.

ANGEL ANTICS A recent trip to California included a visit to the “Big A”—Anaheim Stadium—to take in an Angels/ Yankees game. Anaheim Stadium is the second oldest venue in the American League, behind Fenway Park—although the Boston edifice remains over a half-century senior to the Big A. In contrast to Fenway, it was “easy in/easy out” in terms of driving to the park, which I did with a long-time Angels fan. The Big A featured fireworks, waterworks, and Mexican food—none of which one would find on Yawkey Way. But every city has its own sports culture. I acknowledged that it was an ordeal to get to Fenway, but that it was worth it, given Boston’s rich baseball legacy. While Orange County lacks Boston’s tradition, Anaheim does have some history. When the Angels beat the Tigers there on the last day of the ’67 season, it gave Boston an Impossible Dream pennant. Nolan Ryan certainly had some special moments at the Big A, and in 1984 I attended an NFL playoff game there, where the football Giants beat the Rams. And I was there in 1985 when Eddie Murray hit three homers for the Orioles—just missing out on a fourth. But it was the next year that the Big A hosted a now legendary Red Sox game— my favorite BoSox game of all time. California led Boston three games to one in the American League Cham-

On the verge of their first World Series ever, the Angels were stymied by home runs by Don Baylor and Dave Henderson. The Red Sox prevailed to return the series to Boston, where the Angels were swamped in Games 6 and 7. Boston went on to the World Series against the Mets, the memory of which sadly overshadows its 1986 California miracle. To some readers that’s ancient history—1967 and 1986, etc. So fast forward to 2015 and the Yankee game at the Big A, where I cheered on the Angels. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend!) Naturally, there was Yankee blue everywhere, and the New York fans (typically) were much louder than the laid-back Californians. It occurred to me that

while the Yankees and the Red Sox typically draw around 3 million fans annually to their respective home parks, they must also account for at least another million each in road attendance. Let’s be honest. Ex–patriate Yankee and Red Sox fans help keep the Rays, Orioles and Blue Jays in business. So the BoSox and Yanks make many millions of dollars for every other team in the league. (Did you hear all the cheering for the Red Sox in Anaheim last weekend?) Anyway, a Garrett Jones homer helped the Bronx Bombers to a 3-0 eighth inning lead, bringing us to the true highlight of the game, which may not have been captured by ESPN, which televised the game nationally. 1990’s when UN arms inspectors played a cat and mouse game with Saddam? Covering that endless exercise in the UN, I recall the maze that world powers faced being blindsided by Baghdad despite having the support of seven Security Council resolutions. While experts will muse over the accord’s technical parameters, the geopolitical reverberations will be felt throughout the region. Islamic Iran, a key player in fueling a number of conventional conflicts such as Iraq and Yemen as well as supporting the Assad regime in Syria will now have more resources to aid its allies, mostly Shiite Moslems who are opposing the majority Sunnis. We may see a spike in inter-Islamic tensions in the Middle East, as Iran is reinvigorated politically and ideologically. There’s a deeper concern too. In a belated quest to battle Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a Sunni Muslim terror movement, the Obama administration has quietly looked to cooperating with Iran’s Shiites as a counterforce. This empowers Iran regionally and threatens trust with Washington’s Arab allies, not to mention

Israel. Sunni Arab state reaction ironically mirrors Israel’s. Shock and deep concern over the long range implications. Arab monarchies such as the Saudis and the Gulf states, not to mention secular Egypt, are decidedly nervous. Turkey has been marginalized. Importantly the deal was not a bilateral negotiation between the U.S. and Islamic Iran but what was called the P-5 plus Germany meaning the permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States and Germany. While those countries want to defuse Tehran’s nuclear weapons capacity, at the same time they wish to revive once cosy commercial links with Iran. Russia and China want to reopen lucrative trade, and eventual weapons sales with Iran as do the Europeans. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabuis, who to his credit was particularly tough in negotiations, now is set to visit Iran in the near future. French economic ties with Iran were traditionally strong until sanctions slashed $4.4 billion in trade in 2004 down to $650 million in 2013. French commercial delegations will soon head to Tehran to talk business as will the Germans and British! Nonetheless, the Islamic Republic of Iran remains one of the world’s most intolerant regimes fostering political and religious repression of its own people. So will the U.S. Congress support this deeply flawed deal? No matter how Congress votes, many observers view this accord as securing Obama’s “political legacy. It just might, but not in the way the president wishes. The Iranian mullahs may have the last laugh. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. Ask The Builder

DEAR TIM: I stopped by my new home construction site the night before the foundation footer was going to be poured to start to take photos. I saw several white pipes inside the forms and wondered what they were for. Will these compromise the strength of the footer since the concrete thickness will be less where they’re located? The steel rods are suspended above the ground too. Is that right? What’s the exact purpose of the footer and will it support the house if a hollow spot develops under it for some reason? --Cindy S., Buffalo, N.Y. DEAR CINDY: Congratulations on your new home. It’s exciting to build a home. I remember building my new home for my wife; it was fascinating to see our dreams turn into reality each day. It can be a small plastic ruler, a set of car keys or a common soda pop can or bottle of water. This is very important when taking photos of defects such as a concrete slab crack or a scratch on siding or a door. Let’s talk about foundation footers. They get their name from our own anatomy. Think about it. Your feet are the parts of your body that are normally in contact with the

earth during waking hours. They help support you and spread your body weight on the ground or a floor. That’s what a house footer does. Its job is to provide a flat and level surface on which to set foundation wall panels and to spread the weight of the entire house onto the ground. Think of a knife and butter. If you try to cut through butter with a knife blade laid flat across the butter, you don’t get far. If you put the edge of the knife on the butter and push down, you cut right through it.

Obviously, she had NO idea who she was dealing with. Her razor sharp finger nails did cut my hands, but once I realized I was in a tussle my Marine Corps training took over. The Trout projectile remained in my possession and I immediately presented it to Beth. The obnoxious Yankee fan returned to her seat. I noticed that she wore a #13 (Alex Rodriquez) jersey. Of course. Naturally, Trout came up in the bottom of the eighth and hit a home run. The Angels got some other runners on, but the Yankee relievers stymied the rally and New York won 3-1. We were on the freeway in short order afterwards—

tion of beautiful California maidens armed with cannons, which launch tightly-wrapped Mike Trout #27 jerseys to eager fans in the stands. Our seats were in the second deck, down the right field line, just in front of the press box, but one of the maidens got her azimuth and elevation just right and launched a package in our direction. My finely-honed athletic instincts took over and I stood and prepared to catch the incoming projectile. I had it all the way, but just as I caught it, a female Yankee fan lunged over me from behind and tried to wrestle the prize from my grasp.

JUMBOS Alert reader Brad Wolff (Tufts University, Class of 1972) recently took issue with an earlier column which proclaimed the “Flaming Smelts” as the top collegiate sports nickname. Wolff advocated for the Tufts Jumbos, named for an historic elephant. “Jumbo has been ranked among the most singular mascots in college athletics by both the Sporting News and Sports Illustrated magazines,” wrote Wolff. “I believe he is the only college mascot who can be found in Webster’s dictionary.”

something that would never happen in Boston. Inevitably we compared the Big A experience to the Fenway experience. I opined that Anaheim could keep the waterworks, fireworks, and Yankee fans, but that Fenway should adopt an enhanced version of the Angels Strike Force and add more Mexican food options. Fenway Franks are no longer an adequate ball yard staple. I’m sure that Señor Ted Williams— who was half Mexican— would agree. More tortillas and tamales! And cheaper cerveza! Glenn Miller Orchestra In Wolfeboro The Great Waters Music Festival will welcome The Glenn Miller Orchestra to Wolfeboro when they appear at The Kingswood Arts Center Friday, July 31st at 7:30 pm. Great Waters will be honoring all World War II veterans with two free tickets to this performance. Glenn Miller disappeared on Dec. 15, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity. In September 1942, just prior to going into the army, he had disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. Not long before he enlisted, he nosed-out Tommy Dorsey, the “Best Sweet Band in the Downbeat poll. His recordings of In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade and Tuxedo Junction were all major hit records. Miller played to sell out crowds, and his music constantly dominated the airways. On Dec. 15, Miller took

The Jolly (Good) British Comedy “Relatively Speaking at The Barnstormers Greg adores Ginny. But, does Ginny adore Greg? Find out in this hilarious British romp “Relatively Speaking by renowned playwright Alan Ayckbourn, July 28 - August 1. When Ginny realizes how much she actually adores Greg, she’s off to end her long-time affair with an older man. She tells Greg she’s visiting her parents but goes instead to her lover’s home to sever the relationship and retrieve some compromising letters. Greg follows her and believes her older lover and his unsuspecting wife, who skipped church that morning, are Ginny’s parents. The ensuing confusion, coverup, and mistaken identity results in flawless, comic delight. The London Evening Standard called it “The funniest trick of the season. “This was Alan Ayckbourn’s first big hit, and he captures the essence of the sixties in a hysterical fashion, said Artistic

Director Bob Shea. “It takes mistaken identity to comic heights as only British humor can right through the finale’s zinger. Ayckbourn’s plays have always been winners at The Barnstormers, and ‘Relatively Speaking’ is one of my favorites.

ing on a different planet. And anyone who believes that the United Nations can be the unifying force on this matter lives in a different universe. 3) A national thrust to eliminate human emissions - on the scale the activists want - would require a monstrous governmental agency that would make the current EPA look like child’s play. So the third question is: “How can the country afford such a massive program?” To think that added personal taxes, redirection of corporate revenues, and/or further taxing the “one-percenters” will generate the added revenue is delusional. Our government remains in a deep annual deficit along with over $17 trillion in long-term debt. So, this begs a final question. “What current federal expenditures and programs will be sacrificed to redirect

revenues to implement an aggressive new thrust the nature of which is suggested by the climate activists?” Welfare reduction? Less military spending? Transportation? Education? These are extremely important questions. So, if Rubio declines to jump on the climate change bandwagon, it is because the science IS unsettled and the policy implications ARE formidable. This is not a matter dominated by emotional fervor; nor is it a matter that should be calibrated by political campaigning. Mr. Sherwood characterizes Senator Rubio’s “leadership” and his overall qualification for presidency based upon this single, highlydebatable issue. That, Mr. Sherwood, is a very narrow perspective of leadership. Jack Paster Moultonborough, NH

Summer Fun! The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

“Bob Fogg and the Golden Age of Aviation” At The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is hosting a presentation, “Bob Fogg and the Golden Age of Aviation”, Featuring Jane Rice on Wednesday, July 29th, at 7pm “Bob Fogg and New Hampshire’s Golden Age of Aviation” tells the story of the Granite State’s true pioneer of aviation, and includes many previously unpublished images of airplanes and aviators of the 1920s and 1930s. Bob Fogg brought aviation to Concord and the Weirs in the early ‘20s and he and his pilots introduced flying to a whole generation that grew up in that time period. For those interested in the history of the Lakes Region,

it describes the seaplane base that was a prominent feature of the Weirs boardwalk from 1923 until the early 1950s, and the planes that hopped

passengers from many lakeside resorts throughout New Hampshire. Classic Wacos, Travel Airs, Beech Staggerwings and Sikorsky amphibians that once plied the blue skies over Lake Winnipesaukee come to life again in the pages of this fascinating history. This event is free for Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society members, for non members there is a $5 fee with all proceeds going to benefit the Historical Society’s ongoing renovations. We are located on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, next to Funspot. Please RSVP to 366-5950.

but didn’t really come alive until I returned early in the morning to find a wonderful shaft of light coming from a side window, across the floor and catching the quilt on the bed. Of course light is the key to giving dimension to the cut paper things I’ve been doing recently. I will have one in this show of the Mirror Lake Church, which is such an iconic part of the New England landscape, and is perfect for portrayal in this whiteon-white paper medium. As the sunlight literally feeds and enriches us, I hope my capturing a bit

of it on the wall will be enriching for those who see them. The Art Place gallery owner Barbara reflects on his artwork—Peter is such a realist. Not only in the nature in which he paints, but also in his approach to his art and the subject matter that he chooses. For example, Barbara continues, “I recently had Peter join me on a bike ride of Bridge Falls path in Wolfeboro to Fernald’s corner. I wanted him to be inspired to create some paintings of scenes along the path. It was a beautiful summer morning, and I pointed

out many areas that I have been seeing along the trail on my numerous rides. I thought they may be of interest to him. Peter looked and listened and didn’t quite have the same enthusiasm for these “sites as I had. So on the way back, he stopped and took pictures of some things that caught his eye along the way. Peter found things of interest to him that to me, were not obvious or expected. He said he likes things that are less polished. Once he pointed them out to me, I absolutely found the beauty in his subject matter. This is what inspires Peter. The old gray shingled boathouse that I had passed by for years had a carved anchor on it that I had never noticed before. Peter also took multiple pictures of an old boat plunked in the sand, with it’s torn canopy. There were two locations that both Peter and I were like kids in a candy store— Albee Beach with the lifeguard chair, tipped over boat and children’s pail and shovel seemed to say “paint me!. The shadows from the tree even See ferber on 35

were in a perfect location. One would have thought it had been staged. No need to, It was nature and real with it’s simple beauty and that is just the way Peter painted it. The other picture that just excited us both, was from Mast Landing where Peter was poised behind a tree (he was trespassing just a bit.) We both saw two men, generations apart, walking down the dock towards their boat. The posture of the older fisherman with his bait bucket couldn’t have been better. The light highlighted the green and gold colors on the shallow water in the foreground and just an edge of the old shingled building created it’s own story of family tradition, well spent leisure time, and the quality of life that we are fortunate to have when living near the water. Our ride down the trail and back gave me a wonderful perspective into the eyes and soul of a true artist. Since 1994 Peter Ferber has painted the official posters for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show,

which also comes as highly collectable artist proofs. Peter has exhibited in over 50 shows in New England and the Midwest. More than 100 reproductions of his work have been made, including over 70 limited edition prints. Peter Ferber’s illustrations have appeared in national magazines, including Yankee, Antiques and Connoisseur, and a number of books including a retrospective of the poetry and prose of Doris Peel, entitled Journey to a New Day, and a children’s book written by his wife,

Jeannie Ferber, entitled The Tails of Quince and Flute in Semer Wood. Peter Ferber’s Gallery Show will be on display through August 15th or as long as available. The Art Place is the exclusive gallery for Peter Ferber’s original artwork, and produces many of his limited edition prints. The Art Place is located at 9 North Main Street, downtown Wolfeboro, NH and is open year round and daily all summer. For more information, please call 603 569-6159. or toll free 866 569-6159.

when Planned Parenthood’s human harvesters in Kansas were first uncovered. Can it get any more stomach-turning? Brace yourselves. This video is just the first in a series by the Center for Medical Progress, which has been investigating Planned Butcherhood’s illegal, immoral trafficking of aborted fetal parts for almost three years. The expose comes after years of undercover journalistic work by Lila Grace Rose and Live Action, who have caught governmentsupported Planned Parenthood officials covering up for sexual predators, promoting gendercide, flouting health regulations and disclosure laws, soliciting money from racist eugenics zealots who want more black babies aborted, and perpetuating a homicidal racket in the name of “reproductive health. Nucatola is no rogue underling. She’s Planned Parenthood’s “senior director of “medical services with

years of scalpel-wielding, hands-on abortion training. She bragged not only about her own expertise in procurement of baby body parts, but about the everyday trafficking that goes on “behind closed doors at countless “affiliates. When you’ve recovered from your nausea, ask yourselves this: What kind of country do we live in where law-abiding businesses are fined, threatened and demonized for refusing to bake gay wedding cakes, but barbaric baby butchers are hailed by feminists, Hollywood and a president who asked God to “bless them? God help us. Michelle Malkin is author of the new book “Who Built That: Awe-Inspiring Stories of American Tinkerpreneurs. Her email address is malkinblog@ gmail.com.

Last year, Lawrence who is Master Character Development Instructor and Legislative Affairs Officer for the Civil Air Patrol, met Ryan Pitts of Nashua, who is the ninth living recipient of the Medal of Honor from the War in Afghanistan, when he was the guest speaker at a Development Class. “He was very inspiring to listen to, said Lawrence. “After it was over I asked him what he thought of a memorial for those who fought in the war on terror and he thought it was a great idea. Lawrence’s next step was in finding out from those involved in the Vermont memorial. Dana Morissette, who designed the Vermont memorial was brought to design the New Hampshire one. It will consist of two granite panels with the names of the fallen New Hampshire soldiers engraved in the stone. “Dana has done a lot of work up to this point and he hasn’t received any pay yet, said Lawrence. and the “It’s good to be king mentality permeating our Executive Branch, we abandon the rule of law and any legal defense. Just ask the officials in Westchester County, NY. This wealthy county fought a losing, decade’slong battle against a federal re-write of its zoning codes. By substituting “race for “wealth or other socio-economic parameter beyond any county’s control, the federal government found Westchester guilty of racial bias through zoning. The forced re-engineering of the county was inevitable. Of course, just as inevitable is the selective targeting of federal power. America’s wealthiest county, Loudoun, in the DC-metro area, is only 7.3% black, but seems to have escaped federal notice. Or, perhaps, this is an example of Big Brother’s NIMBY mentality. We’ve had our own experience with eroding zoning codes. Back in 2008 I wrote about HB 1472, a fundamentally flawed NH bill ostensibly designed to address a perceived shortage of “workforce housing: This bill continues the erroneous logic that drove a Strafford County judge to decide against the town

of Ossipee in a 2005 workforce housing case. Using a regional requirement to define need rather than a town-based requirement, the judge forced Ossipee to permit building lower-value per square foot residential property to accommodate lower-wage workers moving to Ossipee but employed in surrounding towns such as North Conway. The Strafford judge cited New Jersey law to support his judicial excess. Whether it’s the federal government applying national statistics to local communities or judges reaching beyond state borders to justify opinions, our right to determine the direction of our communities is under assault by those who assume the role of our “betters. That’s a foreign concept much beloved of people who just don’t like or trust the American experiment. Unless we want to be pressed into service against our interests and our better selves, we have to turn down the King’s shilling and have the courage of our convictions. It’s time to tell those self-appointed “betters, those “third parties who pay no price for being wrong, where they can shove their data.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, July 23, 2015

builder from 21

Imagine if narrow 8-inchwide foundation walls were poured directly on soil. There’s a very good possibility the foundation would start to slice down through the soil over time. That would be very bad. The pipes that you see are a very good thing. That tells me the builder or architect knows how to alleviate tiny artesian water wells inside the basement of your home. Those pipes will allow any ground water that might build up under your basement slab to drain, by gravity, to the soil around your home. The pipes will not compromise the strength of the footer or its ability to spread the weight of your house onto the ground. If the builder installs great foundation drain tile outside the footer once it’s poured and this pipe continues beyond the house to a low point on your lot where it comes to the surface as the ground falls away, any and all ground water around and under your slab will naturally drain away and not enter your basement. This is why I always tried to purchase and build on

lots where at least one part of the lot was lower in elevation than the bottom of the footer. I wanted Mother Nature to provide part of my basement waterproofing for free. When you can drain the water to the low spot of a lot using gravity instead of pumping it out of a sump, you’re so much better off. The steel rods you see are supposed to be encased in the concrete. The steel provides tens of thousands of pounds of tensile strength to the footers. Concrete is very strong when you compress it, but when you bend or try to stretch it, it only has 10 percent of the strength it has when compressed. If the ground below the footer does settle, the steel rods will help hold the footer together. The footer itself is not designed to bridge large hollow spots or soft spots in the ground or soil. Think about how steel I-beams and floor joists are made. The vertical web of a steel I-beam is what allows it to support things. The same is true for a floor joist. If you lay a floor joist flat, it bends easily. Your tall concrete founda-

tion walls are just like the webs of a steel I-beam. This is why it’s very important for there to be continuous steel bars about 16 inches from the bottom of the foundation wall and 12 or 16 inches down from the top of the wall inside the poured concrete. This steel holds, in most cases, the foundation wall together in the event the soil beneath it starts to fail. I hope your plans call for four total steel bars in the foundation. I’d love for them to be 5/8-inch in diameter, too. Based on the photo you sent me, it appears the foundation contractor is not cutting any corners. I’ll bet he’ll be putting in the required steel in the foundation, but go ahead and ask him what he’s got planned just to be sure. Need an answer? The concert will be held from 7pm to 9pm at Anderson Hall, 205 Main Street on the Brewster Academy campus in Wolfeboro (limited parking is available at the venue with additional parking available nearby). The Dolls are a trio who sing in the style of the 1940s’ Andrews Sisters. Their repertoire includes many of the most iconic tunes from that World War II-era sister act, including “Begin the Beguine,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” “Bei mir bist du Schön,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I Got a Gal in Kalamazoo,” “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby,” “In the Mood,” and many others. From Boogie Woogie to the Blues, The Manhattan Dolls celebrate the best the Great American Songbook has to offer. A general admission ticket for the Museum fundraiser is $35. If you buy a block of 10
