Stunning Exhibit Brings The Reality of D-Day To Life

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

World War II in Wolfeboro where this fascinating exhibit “Snapshots of D-Day” is on display until September 7th. The photographs, on loan from the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, are a collection of mostly never before seen photographs of that historic day, taken by photographers of the US Signal Corps, US Navy and US

Coast Guard as well as a few individual photographs taken by regular soldiers. The sixty photographs follow the story from right before the invasion, to troops preparing, to the landing and the aftermath, most of which will bring to the viewer a new light in understanding exactly what these soldiers sacrificed on that day, See d-day on 16

At first glance it seems like any photo display. Black and white images encircle the four walls of the exhibit room. Starting at the first photo and following their chronological order around the room, the viewer is soon pulled into one of the more amazing stories of the

Twentieth Century that happened seventy years ago. By the time you have viewed all sixty of the photos, you can’t help but feel the power of the life and death that was part of that day, December 6, 1944. Bristol Rotary Club Penny Sale The Bristol Rotary Club will hold its Annual Penny sale on Thursday, August 14th at 6:30pm at the Newfound Memorial Middle School on Lake Street in Bristol. Now in its 62ndyear, the Rotary Penny sale is one of New Hampshire’s longest running annual fundraisers. Last year alone, the Club raised over $9000.00 for scholarship funds for local youths in the Newfound area seven town school district. The Penny sale works as follows: there are 3 prize rounds throughout the night offering 100 or more prizes in each round. Rotarians sell tickets for $1. each prior to each round. If a person’s ticket is drawn, they win a prize and their ticket goes back into the drum to be eligible to win again and again. The more tickets a person buys, the better chances they have being drawn for a prize. They will also have Grand Prizes at the end of the 3 rounds which include a Shop & Save Gift Card, Kindle Fire, Mountain Bike from Rhino Bike Works, Picnic Table from RP Willams, Scratch tickets from Shackett’s Store, CASH and 125 gallons of home heating oil from Dead River Company. The drawing for the Rotary Summer Raffle will kick off this years’ Penny Sale at 6:30 pm. A 50/50 Raffle to benefit Bristol Community Services, 100 sweepstakes raffle to benefit the TTCC Summer Scholarship Fund, and a Silent Auction to benefit Rotary Charities will also be held. Refreshments will be on sale and this will be a fun filled night for all. For further information contact President Greg Gorski at Bristol Shop & Save or any Bristol Rotarian.

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic At Flying Monkey At 7:30pm on Saturday, August 16th, The Flying Monkey in Plymouth will welcome George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic to its stage for one show only. Clinton is widely known as the godfather of funk, and for his eccentric, over the top concerts that forged a path for what a truly spectacular concert experience could be. Tickets for this up close and personal concert are $75. George Clinton is arguably THE foremost innovator of funk music, and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Don’t miss one of the most eccentric- and trailblazing- artists of all time in what promises to be a typically flamboyant, over the top show with his entire entourage. Don’t miss a music legend(yes we said it) as he makes a rare stop in little old Plymouth NH, planet earth. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www.flyingmonkeynh. com or call 603-536-2551.

Silly Man Todd Wellington In Dover On Tuesday, August 19th from 10:30am to Noon, Silly Man Todd Wellington will be performing at the Orange Leaf Children’s Series at the Rotary Arts Paviltion at Henry Law Park in Dover. The series has grown dramatically in recent years, and these popular family events now average over 500 attendees per week. The Rotary Arts Pavilion is footsteps away from the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire, the City’s Indoor Swimming Pool, and the playground and grassy riverside expanse at Henry Law Park itself. All of this makes for an extremely enjoyable and fun-filled day for the entire family right in downtown Dover. Each week, the Children’s Series features a different performance, including music, dancing, puppeteers, jugglers and magicians.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Few Ideas I couldn’t think of a whole column to go along with this, but I couldn’t let the opportunity to mention it pass me by.

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

To be honest, it isn’t always easy to come up with a column every week. Sure, there are tons of things going on in New Hampshire and the country that are great fodder for making fun of. The only problem is that each thing that is going on doesn’t necessarily have the legs to pan out into a full column. Some ideas are just good for about a couple of paragraphs or a few sentences before they run out of steam. So, since these ideas never make it onto the page, that means that there are many of these strange thoughts about stuff that ramble around in my brain, settle there for a while and then gestate into a thought that is never used. I thought I would share a few of these unused ideas since it seems like such a shame to let them go to waste. I am also sharing them because I don’t actually have an idea with any other legs to go with this week. Last week a port-a-pottie company was fined for transporting their product, fully-loaded, down Interstate 93. It seems it is illegal to transport human waste along public roadways in certain vehicles. It set me to thinking. Under this premise, wouldn’t it make sense to fine every campaigning politician who travels on public roadways since they are full of it as well?

Last Wednesday, a new hybrid vehicle pulled up in front of my house, blocking my driveway and making it impossible for me to pull out if I needed to. A young, bright-eyed (possibly hypnotized?) young man got out, walked to my door. It seems he was looking for someone else. After he got over his initial confusion, he told me he was from the New Hampshire Democratic Party and asked me if I know who I was voting for in the next election. I won’t tell you my answer, but I will tell you that the thought that started to gestate was how this young man, driving a hybrid, was showing to the world his overwhelming concern for the planet while his inconsiderate parking, blocking my driveway, showed his lack of concern for people in general. Makes me wonder about the future. Maybe not a great idea for a good column, but I’m sure if I followed him around until he found a more hostile driveway owner I would have had a great YouTube video. (Just in case you were wondering, I gave the wrong answer to his question, so he didn’t bother to write it down. Wonder how that poll will end up.) Writing about this next idea might get some people angry since it is such a volatile situation here in New England, but I was thinking that maybe this Artie T guy just wanted to retire anyway and now feels obligated to work again. He must have millions and he’s not a young guy anymore. Maybe he was just finally relaxing in

a mansion somewhere sitting in his Jacuzzi smoking a big Cuban cigar when all of a sudden the phone rings. The thought that kept popping into my head was the line from the movie The Godafather III; “Just when I thought I was out. They pull me back in. Of course, I couldn’t write an entire column based on just assumptions alone and things that might be, that would be irresponsible. Besides, I have no idea if Artie T smokes cigars or even has a Jacuzzi. I watched some of the World Cup and I thought it would be a great idea to have professional sports only play for championships every four years. I think it would mean something more. A championship kind of loses its luster when you have to start to play to defend it in what seems like just a couple of months later. If you are like me, a New York Mets fan, you wouldn’t have to waste your valuable energy building up your expectations year after year, you would only have to focus on a positive outcome for the team once every four years only to be disappointed once again, much like a Presidential election. Well, I do have a bunch of other ideas that aren’t enough to make a full column, but all I had to do this week was come up with enough of them to fill this page. Mission Accomplished! ******** Brendan’s book “The Flatlander Chronicles is available at The Weirs Times and online at

There’s NO Place Like Home To The Editor: First of all, I have to tell everyone how much I miss my weekly column at the Weirs Times. Relocating to Hooksett has been quite the experience. But, I can honestly tell you, I miss the folks in Belknap County. Stepping into the State Senate race has been very eye opening to be sure. Running for State Senate is much different than running for the NH State House, mostly because the constituency is so much larger. But, meeting the new people in District 16 – the communities of Bow, Candia, Dunbarton, Hooksett and Wards 1, 2, and 12 of Manchester has been invigorating and exciting if not a little overwhelming. I recently stopped by Alton to talk with some friends and catch up on the goings-on in Belknap

County. There are many competitive races coming up, and the “political buzz is certainly in the air. I like to think there will be a goodly number of Constitution-loving voters who will come out for the September 9 primary. Unfortunately, history tells us primaries don’t always have a strong showing. But, I hope you can prove history wrong. I just love Belknap County. It has a very special place in my heart. Make no mistake, there has never been a time when your vote will count more than it will on Sept. 9. If you fail to support your Conservative candidates, then you can expect to see more government overreach, more taxes, and more bureaucracy. YUCK! After spending years in Belknap County, and the past two years in public office, I have learned we need to vet our candidates, especially incumbents. We need

The Kineo’s wooded summit is located in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (more than 7,800 acres located between Warren and Woodstock). We bushwhacked about a mile off the Mount Kineo Trail to get to the summit. by orange flagging. I innocently followed along and in a minute Becca questioned why the blazes had disappeared. I stopped and jogged back to the last blaze I saw and sure enough the next one was straight ahead, I had been fooled. Continuing on we reached the height of land in the notch between Mount Cushman and Mount Kineo and then past more beaver ponds. There were a few bog bridges but not enough to really be of help. When we reached the Hubbard Brook Road, I reflected that at least there were few blow downs but the blazes seriously need to be painted. The road walk to the Kineo Pond trailhead at least had good footing. Here we were in the middle of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and I have no idea what they do here but it is in the middle of nowhere. Up we hiked through muddy sections of trail to the high point and then turned north off the trail to find the true sum-

There is a little brown hiker sign on Rte 118 that gives little warning that you’ve found the forest road that leads to the trailheads of Hubbard Brook and Three Ponds. The forest road is on the east side of Rte 118; go pass the Moosilauke Carriage Road but if you reach the Ravine Lodge Road you’ve missed it by a mile. The trails that we would be traveling are known to be in poor condition due to lack of trail maintenance and little hiker traffic. Becca and I walked around the gate and crossed a bridge over the East Branch of the Baker River and then past the Three Ponds Trailhead continuing on the road to the Hubbard Brook Trail. The trail starts out decent and then shortly it is brook and busted beaver dam nonsense. We follow extremely faded yellow blazes, a few old tin can tops nailed to trees and we stepped very carefully. Along the end of the beaver pond the path appeared to turn right and was marked

Guest Editorial Fear and Loathing On the Left Y o u just knew the Koch B r o t h ers would factor in at some p o i n t , d i d n ’ t you? Former chairby Ken Gorrell man of the state Democratic Party Kathy Sullivan’s recent Union Leader essay (“NH Republicans are taking cues from out-of-state right-wingers”) was as predictable as it was derivative, sounding like the product of an op-ed writing machine stashed in the basement of DNC headquarters. While Ms. Sullivan wants us to believe that Republican candidates for NH offices are fearfully dancing to the tune of out-of-state interests, I wonder if she truly believes her own words. Being neither a candidate for office nor member of the “mysterious” American for Prosperity, I find myself largely in agreement with its stated goals. Why should our candidates be any different? I’m just a New Hampshire born-and-raised small businessman, but I also believe in: cutting taxes and government spending in order to halt the encroachment of government in the economic lives of citizens; pointing out evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse; removing unnecessary barriers to entrepreneurship; sparking citizen involvement early in

the regulatory process; and restoring fairness to our judicial system. These are just a few points from the AFP’s mission statement, posted on their not-so-mysterious website. Sullivan just can’t seem to imagine that GOP candidates and their supporters might have views that honestly align with advocacy groups like AFP. Instead, she projects an emotion – fear – onto those with whom she disagrees. No one is forced to be a member of AFP or contribute to such organizations (we can’t say the same about Democratsupporting unions like AFT, SEIU, or the NEA) yet many citizens find common cause in the goals of organizations like AFP that espouse freemarket principles. To see real fear generated by out-of-state interest groups, look at the ultimately successful legal battle in Michigan fought against a powerful union demanding dues from mothers caring for their own disabled children. It is not out of fear of the Koch brothers that I recognize that Medicaid expansion – to use one of Sullivan’s few policy examples – is a national priority for the Democrat party, not part of some home-grown NH-focused agenda. The belief that it’s a budget-busting lobster trap that won’t likely accomplish its stated goals isn’t a radical notion; it’s a supportable position based on budgetary analysis and recent experience. “Coming to A Town Near You” The voice on the other end of the line is exasperated. “It’s insane,” he wants America to know. “We’re in a war zone.” And there’s by Michelle Malkin no room for Syndicated Columnist apathy. “This is coming to a town near you,” he warns. The man on the phone is a veteran of the Department of Homeland Security who works in South Texas. He reached out to me Monday night in the wake of an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent’s horrific murder on Sunday. The 36-year-old agent, Javier Vega Jr., was shot execution-style in front of his wife, his parents, two of his sons and another child in the Rio Grande Valley. Vega’s father was also shot but survived. They were on an idyllic family fishing trip before

being robbed and ambushed. The two suspects are Mexican nationals from Matamoros. “They’re here illegally,” my source said with a weary sigh. And not just that. They had been previously deported after committing other serious crimes, he says. “But we just drop the thugs off at the border, and they come right back.” The National Border Patrol Council issued a moving statement after a middle-of-the-night manhunt led to the capture and confessions of the two suspects this weekend: “Agent Vega was armed and fought back to protect his family. During the course of the ensuing firefight Agent Vega’s father was hit in the leg and Agent Vega was mortally wounded. After Agent Vega fell, his family members continued to fight back. Agent Vega’s actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Border Patrol and his will be a place, deserved of See malkin on 8

Modern Calvary for Mid-East Christians PARIS—The headlines seem from another era, if not century; that of Christian persecution by militant Islam in by John J. Metzler t h e M i d d l e Syndicated Columnist East. Yet the modern political responses to this age-old conflict appear ambivalent to what’s emerged as an organized attempt by the militant State of Islam to impose a caliphate both on Christians as well as more secular Muslims. And yes, remind yourself this is the 21st century! Three forces have opposed this modern day persecution; the Catholic Church as one would expect, the United Nations, crucial in a political sense, and French public opinion. Pope Francis said, “To find the martyrs, it’s not necessary to go to the catacombs or the Coliseum. The martyrs live in a number of countries. The Church of the 21st century is a Church of the martyrs.” UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon called the persecutions, “A crime against humanity.” In a special statement on religious minorities in Mosul, Iraq, the Security Council “express their deep concern over reports of threats against religious and

ethnic minorities in Mosul and other parts of Iraq controlled by the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) including the ultimatum to Christians to either leave the city, stay and pay a tribute, convert to Islam, or face imminent execution.” The Council condemned in the “strongest terms the systematic persecution of individuals from minority populations and those who refuse its extremist ideology in Iraq.” Though the United States government has grudgingly conceded the scope of the problem, especially since June when jihadi militants seized large parts of northern Iraq threating ancient Christian communities in Mosul and Nineveh province, few countries besides France, have viewed the persecution both as a political as well as a humanitarian problem. France to its credit, or perhaps because of its unique experience in the Levant, especially Lebanon, Syria and to some degree Iraq, has kept the issue in the headlines. In a poll for the respected French daily Le Figaro, two out of three respondents say the government should intervene to protect the Christian minority. A front page editorial added, “The long silence of the West is a moral fault, and it’s a geopolitical error. It not only has to do with the cross, the star, or

the crescent, what is in play is a cultural richness, a model of society and a political future.” It questioned whether minorities in Arab countries will be “put under the sword of the Caliph.”

Christians have been rooted in the Middle East for two thousand years. Since the “Arab Spring” of 2011, which jolted the largely sectarian but authoritarian order, there’s

Is Thinking Obsolete? Some have said that we are living in a post-industrial era, while others have said that we are living in a post-racial era. But growby Thomas Sowell ing evidence Syndicated Columnist suggests that we are living in a post-thinking era. Many people in Europe and the Western Hemisphere are staging angry protests against Israel’s military action in Gaza. One of the talking points against Israel is that far more Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israeli military attacks than the number of Israeli civilians killed by the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel that started this latest military conflict. Are these protesters aware that vastly more German civilians were killed by American bombers attacking Nazi Germany during World War II than American civilians killed in the United States by Hitler’s forces? Talk show host Geraldo Rivera says that there is no way Israel is winning the battle for world opinion. But Israel is trying to win the battle for survival, while surrounded by enemies. Might that not be more important? Has any other country, in any other war, been expected to keep the enemy’s civilian casualties no higher than its own civilian casualties? The idea that Israel should do so did not originate among the masses but among the educated intelligentsia. In an age when scientists are creating artificial intelligence, too many of our educational

institutions seem to be creating artificial stupidity. It is much the same story in our domestic controversies. We have gotten so intimidated by political correctness that our major media outlets dare not call people who immigrate to this country illegally “illegal immigrants.” Geraldo Rivera has denounced the Drudge Report for carrying news stories that show some of the negative consequences and dangers from allowing vast numbers of youngsters to enter the country illegally and be spread across the country by the Obama administration. Some of these youngsters are already known to be carrying lice and suffering from disease. Since there have been no thorough medical examinations of most of them, we have no way of knowing whether, or how many, are carrying deadly diseases that will spread to American children when these unexamined young immigrants enter schools across the country. The attack against Matt Drudge has been in the classic tradition of demagogues. It turns questions of fact into questions of motive. Geraldo accuses Drudge of trying to start a “civil war.” Back when masses of immigrants from Europe were entering this country, those with dangerous diseases were turned back from Ellis Island. Nobody thought they had a legal or a moral “right” to be in America or that it was mean or racist not to want our children to catch their diseases. Even on the less contentious issue of minimum wage laws, there are the same unthinking reactions. See Sowell on 34

missed enforcement advocate Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., as “insignificant.” It’s “almost as though they despise and hate all of our children,” fumed Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill. So, public safety and homeland security concerns are “insignificant”? More than a half-million border crossers from Mexico, South America and Central America granted administrative amnesty or special border-surge status under Obama are “our children”? Where are the speeches from Pelosi and her fellow House Democrats on behalf of the children of Javier Vega? And for the children of other fallen agents? Or for the children of countless other victims nationwide murdered by criminals who waltzed across the borders with impunity? And where’s the compassion for the men and women trying to do the job big business and big government don’t want done? The men and women sworn to provide border security -- instead of just talking about it -- don’t have time for Washington games and politically correct niceties. “A lot of politicians come down here,” my DHS correspondent says. “They talk about securing the border, but they leave us with our hands tied.” He shares his experiences patrolling vast swaths of the Rio Grande

Valley with no backup. He talks about wasted resources and the deportation charade. “They get their papers served, and then they just disappear.” Both parties are to blame for the endless cycle of amnesty, catch and release, and bloodshed, he tells me. The latest border surge, catalyzed by Obama’s systemic nonenforcement and bipartisanenabled benefits magnets, keeps DHS first responders overwhelmed by design. “They keep doing the same thing over and over again,” he points out, “and it doesn’t work.” Immigration “reform” doesn’t require hundreds of pages of new legislation, new waivers, new employment permits, more lawyers or visa expansion programs. It starts and ends with this: Stop pouring fuel on the border chaos fire, and let our forces on the front lines do their damned jobs. I tell my DHS correspondent “thank you” and share my prayers for his safety. He hangs up and gets back to his work -- or as much of it as the politicians in Washington will allow him to do. DEAR TIM: I’ve decided to install some wallpaper. It’s a small room, so it shouldn’t be too hard. Since I’ve never installed wallpaper, I’m filled with anxiety about how to cut and trim the wallpaper where the paper stops at the ceiling. Can you demystify the process? What other tips can you share with the beginner who desires success and not a rerun of I Love Lucy trying to wallpaper? --Sharon P., Dayton, Ohio DEAR SHARON: Your instincts are right on target. Wallpapering is a true craft and no matter what anyone tells you, even the cable TV hosts, it’s not as easy as it looks. Professional paper hangers will tell you that it can take hundreds of hours of practice until you become fairly proficient. But all that said, even the professionals had to paper their first room! I admire people like you that accept a challenge, attempt to do their due diligence, and then jump in realizing a mistake or two is possible. What’s

Trimming wallpaper where it stops at a ceiling is not as hard as it looks. probably going to happen in your case is you’ll make some mistakes, but any friends or relatives that see the completed job will not be able to find them. I don’t have near enough space to give you all the information you need. Let’s get started with the tools. Fortunately, you don’t need many tools to wallpaper. You’ll need a retractable razor knife outfitted with the blades that snap off exposing a fresh point. These knives come in different sizes, and you want one that’s medium or small size to

fit into tight places. The long blades that come with these tools are about three-eighths inch wide and 4 inches long. I prefer to use a 5-inchwide flexible drywall taping knife as a trimming straightedge. Be sure you take a metal file and slightly round off the tips of the knife. Failure to do this will cause you to tear the paper as you slide the taping knife along the paper as you trim up near a ceiling or along vertical pieces of woodwork. Get a special short-

Two of the most wideranging and common woodpeckers are the downy and hairy species. These two birds are almost identical in appearance. Some people consider the smaller downy woodpecker to be the offspring of the larger hairy woodpecker. However, these two wild, clinging feathered friends are very different in many ways. The downy is a sparrow-sized bird whereas the hairy is closer to the size of a large robin. Hence, the hairy weighs almost three times as much as the smaller downy woodpecker. The young of each species will resemble the corresponding adults in terms of size and color. Each species is entirely independent of each other and should not be confused in terms of kinship. The bills or beaks of both birds are useful guidelines for identification. The smaller downy woodpecker has a short, stocky beak that is less than the length of the bird’s head. The large hairy has an extremely long beak that is almost twice the length of the adult’s head. If you are privileged to view both species side by side, the bill lengths would be the most apparent, distinguishing feature. The downy’s tail feathers are spotted while the hairy’s appendages are usually pure white. The sounds of these two woodpeckers are also different. Yes, woodpeckers do communicate with song notes, not just tapping on trees. The call note of the

Downy Woodpecker hairy is both sharper and louder. Speaking of drilling, the hairy also can be heard employing a louder, shorter drumming with greater intervals than the downy. In turns of sociability, the smaller downy will travel with roving bands of other wild bird species in search of food. It will not show aggressive behavior toward other birds while feeding as the larger hairy does. The hairy is more likely to journey alone and is very timid when confronted by humans. Both birds have a range from coast to coast in the Continental US. However, the population of the downy is approximately five time that of the hairy. As autumn approaches, you will observe the antics of the more common downy with other resident birds such as the chickadee, titmouse, and nuthatch. Enjoy your birds! Huck & Newt: Protect Bad GOP Incumbents – Good Bye! Former U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles: “Of all the tasks of government, the most baby Niel Young Advocates Columnist sic is to protect its citizens from violence.” Due to an inept BH Obama our military will once again be in danger. His around the world apology tour back in 2009, his socialism beginning with Obamacare (or more expensive health care), his 6 year fight to promote abortion, the Gay Agenda, insulting our friends around the world, and turning American against American HE FORGOT about his oath to protect US. What a joke! Hey, Chris Matthews, do you still get that tingle up your leg with this guy? BEDFORD READER: “I thought he got the Nobel peace prize because he had brought an end to war? It was fascinating watching media types trying to not call this war, intellectual prostitutes!” Just checking; are the folks at the NH U L aware that there are two other Republicans (more than Brown) in the NH Primary? We understand that Brown is your guy, and it is your paper. Brown’s less than conservative voting record in Massachusetts and D.C. - with less than a 60% voting with the republican position? Scott has said that he is nobody’s man. He has also said that he is independent in his voting. Then why not run as an Independent? If you owned a business and one of your top employees was found to be giving 57% to your company, and at the same time working with your top competitor 43%,

could you justify keeping this employee in your employ? IF you hire him, he has the job for SIX years, until you can fire him! I am told today 8/8, that Sen. Bob Smith is to be a guest on Howie Carr show Thursday 8/14. Betty and I were somewhat loyal viewers of the Mike Huckabee on Saturday night at 8. Then bad memories of Huck came back. He remained in the primary race 2008 long enough to suck enough votes away from Romney to be sure that John McCain would get the nomination. Now, this Establishment RINO is doing us damage again. Huck and Newt Gingrich showed up in Tennessee to endorse Lamar and not the conservative. Bad move for both of them. NH is still the First in the Nation presidential primary. Here in NH we shall not forget who the Establishment GOP supports in the US Senate primary. The ONLY one of the three candidates who fully supports the Republican Platform is BOB SMITH. ******** FRIEND: You all know my position on Iraq, a war that upset the balance of power in the Arabian Gulf, which was fought on a pretext that turned out to be false, that got a whole bunch of kids maimed and killed so an ignorant group of inbreds could consciously reject an opportunity at freedom and representative government. And yes, ignoring my training, I initially supported it. Well, when you commit, and spend the blood and treasure, you seek some sort of permanent gain however ill-conceived your pretext may have been. Not Dear Liar, he refused a good faith negotiation of a status of forces agreement that would have permitted the Iraqi military

to learn how to stand up. That decision was made not as a gesture of strategic doctrine, but in payoff to the trash that makes up his party. And now, well, it comes to pass that ISIS, a cancer that has metastasized out of the carcinogen that was the “Arab Spring”, took a good look at Mesopotamia and decided that land was fertile ground for the caliphate. What did the Iraqi military do? It did its best imitation of the French and Italian armies and threw down its weapons as it ran away. Barack’s reaction: let’s involve the US and send Special Forces trainers to the theater. We’ll also drop ordinance out of US flagged aircraft on the soldiers of the Levant and give some aid and assistance to people we stranded. There is a price for idiocy, and US citizens are getting a full pay back for theirs. That will become rapidly more apparent in the future. A few of us knew better, but not enough of us.

Can you hear the seasons changing? Spring Peepers, birds and wind chimes: just a few of the cherished sounds that return to us this time of year. Don’t miss out again this season.

16 d-day from 1

“This exhibit is really what the Wright Museum is all about,” Said museum Executive Director, Mike Culver. “We want to teach this generation and future generations what the contribution was that these soldiers made to the world today.” More than just a Hollywood version of that D-Day using special effects to try and help relieve that “pivotal” day, these photographs, many crystal clear, show not just the action but also bring a true humanity to those who were involved. It is both interesting and unnerving to see photographs like the one of a Higgins Boat, the amphibious vessels used for the Normandy landing, packed with soldiers on their way to battle as well as being able to

make out the features on most of their faces - some laughing, some stoic - and realizing that twenty percent or more of those soldiers would be killed that very same day. Still, there is but one photograph that displays the well-known fatalities that occurred that day. Most of the other photographs show the landing at Normandy and the results of the operation. There are even a few light-hearted moments displayed in the photographs. A picture of a group of paratroopers sharing a bottle of wine on the street with some local French girls after their liberation is fascinating in itself. “It is photographs like this that really explain exactly what we were fighting the war for,” said Culver.

I’ll leave that for you to see on your own. Besides this extraordinary photographic exhibit,

the Wright Museum has also dedicated their entire building to recognizing the seventieth anniversary of D-Day. Upon entering the museum, you are met with an elaborate display showing what it might have actually looked like on the beach at Normandy. The giant “hedgehogs”, which were

planted by the Germans to rip the bottoms out of landing boats, are recreated in wood and encircled with real looking barbed wire. An army jeep is positioned to look as if it is moving and there is even sand to recreate the beach. Across the way is a display of most of the weapons See d-day on 17

that were used by soldiers that day. Inside the exhibit room are mannequins dressed in the different uniforms that would have been worn that day as well as the insignias of the different fighting groups. “All of these extra displays regarding D-Day have been put together by our volunteers,” said Culver. “I really can’t emphasize enough the fantastic job they all do. Without them I don’t think there would be a museum.”

Grant Sigsworth, one of the many volunteers at the Wright Museum is also a docent at the museum as well as one of those who helped to create some of those displays, from the dressing of the soldier mannequins to creating a very educational display which shows the chain of command on D-Day using the insignias of each group with an explanation of where their name came from. Not all as obvious as you might think. “Every patch tells a sto-

ry,” said Sigsworth. For those who really want to immerse themselves even further into the DDay experience, a sampling of the uniforms and helmets that were worn in World War II as well as the backpacks that were worn (not quite as heavy as the ninety-pounds of supplies that were usually carried)

time. There is so much to be seen and learned through this exhibit; such a clearer understanding of what we fought for and why. It is something that should not be missed. It will be on display until September 7th. Starting on September 14th, the Wright Museum will be introducing a special exhibit on Anne Frank focusing on another important aspect of why the war

was fought. “This is not going to be just about concentration camps,” said Culver. “It will also be about how a teenager related to the horrors of the war and somehow found strength. This is going to be a great exhibit to bring your kids too as well. It will help them understand more what it was all about.” Culver has seen the incorporation of these special events into the Wright Mu-

seum’s programs as crucial to the museum’s mission of educating future generation on the importance of that war to our history. “We are grateful to the Weirs Times for their sponsorship with the D-Day exhibit,” said Culver. “We really count on the help of area businesses to help with special exhibitions like these.” The Wright Museum of World War II is located at 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro and is open every day from now until October 31st. His legendary performances transcend time and have been woven into the fabric of this country’s artistic legacy. His first love and passion is and always will be the stage. “The theater was my first training ground. It taught me discipline, dedication and appreciation of hard work and values that will stay with me a lifetime. The stage sharpens the creative instrument and encourages you to go deeper inside and try new things, states Ben. On Broadway, Ben Vereen has appeared in Wicked, Fosse, I’m Not

the top of a false summit I recognized I had managed to wind us around in a small circle. My compass is my friend, especially on a cloudy day and I used it the rest of the bushwhack with great success. We found the canister and entered our names in the register. We looked up Becca’s entry from March of 2011, marking her first visit. The most recent entry was just two prior but the next was way back in the fall. We didn’t sit on the summit snacking long because the bugs were fierce; they had seemed to come out from no where! Back on the trail we descended and then nearer the end we popped out on

newly graded snowmobile trail. No hiking signs, no blazes, we looked hard as we hiked back and forth on the wide muddy trail trying to figure the right way to go. I recalled there was a sign at the trailhead about snowmobile trail construction but didn’t understand that it meant that the trail was going to do double duty as snowmobile and hiking trail. At end of the Kineo Trail we met a distressed young couple that had spent the previous evening at the Three Ponds Shelter. With a map in one hand and standing under the trail sign somehow he had no idea where he was and

We pointed out the correct trail and asked no questions but he did confess they weren’t able to build a fire last night. I don’t think those two would be doing any backpacking together anytime soon. We continued on the Donkey Hill Cutoff to the beaver dam that is the beginning of the north section of the Three Ponds Trail. Luckily the water was flowing low and we

No, I knew that noise; it was the sound of an excavator banging on ledge. How this could be in the middle of nowhere, we were stumped. Once again the trail surprised us dumping us out onto a newly constructed snowmobile trail and right there was a man working on a bridge. He was surprised too and wondered where we came from. He told us there was another crew with an excavator about a mile away. The man saved us a lot of effort by pointing out where the trail continued because from this point following this trail for its last three miles would prove more difficult than most bushwhacks. By concentrating on the slightly sunken treadway of the nearly non-existing trail we slowly made our way through the overgrowth. Becca was just amazed by how much this trail had deteriorated over the last three years. We pushed our way through the forest, mud and wa-

bristle wallpaper smoothing brush. Some hangers prefer to use a plastic smoothing tool, but I feel rookie hangers can push out too much adhesive by pressing too hard with these tools. Go with the brush to start. You’ll also need an accurate 4-foot level, a tape measure, step ladders, a folding table, a bucket or two, a new grouting sponge, paint roller and pan and a paint brush. You might already have many of these common tools. You really can’t trim wallpaper until it’s up on the wall and in contact with what you’re going to cut against. To ensure the wallpaper stays on the wall and looks good, let’s discuss some basics. The walls need to be as smooth as glass, they need to be clean, and you should apply a special paint that’s made as a wallpaper primer. Don’t use regular paint. These new wallpaper primers take the place of old sizing. The special primers block the water from leaving the adhesive, allowing you lots of time to position each piece of paper as you hang it. This is very important. For this first project, buy pre-pasted paper and use a clear gel paste activator to make the paper sticky. The paste activators can be applied with paint rollers or a brush. Once you apply the activator, you must allow the paper to relax. The paper starts to swell once wet with the activator. You simply fold the paper back onto itself so the back of the paper is completely in contact with itself. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to peel it apart. I’d wait at least 10 minutes for the paper to expand and relax. Failure to do this will create bubbles and blisters in the paper! Wallpaper needs to be hung plumb. You can create a very accurate plumb line using your 4-foot level. Make a very faint pencil line 1/8 inch away from where

you want the first piece of paper to start. Don’t hang the first piece of paper on the pencil line, especially if the paper background is white. You’ll end up seeing the pencil line in the seam when the paper dries. Trimming and cutting paper is an art. The easiest cuts to make are at the ceiling and along long vertical cuts where door and window woodwork touch up against a wall. To make it easy to cut, only allow the wallpaper to lap up onto the ceiling about 1 or 2 inches. The trimming process begins by using the short-bristle brush and carefully pressing the paper as tight as you can into the corner where the top of the wall meets the ceiling. Then use your fingers to press the paper into the corner. Place the drywall knife tightly up into the corner at a 45-degree angle. Use the razor knife to slowly cut the paper with the blade running across the edge of the drywall knife. Slide the drywall knife along the paper and continue to trim. Need an answer? zona and Maine to learn what’s in our future in an essay at the very-NH focused Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy website. With an essay rife with top-down political talking points generated in DC and commonly mouthed by Democrats across the country, Sullivan is either delusional or trying to delude. In 2010 the Washington Post carried a story that quoted President Obama saying, “Right now all around this country there are groups with harmless-sounding names like Americans for Prosperity, who are running millions of dollars of ads against Democratic candidates all across

the country. And they don’t have to say who exactly the Americans for Prosperity are. You don’t know if it’s a foreigncontrolled corporation. You don’t know if it’s a big oil company, or a big bank.” The Obama administration later called AFP a “special-interest front group run by the oil billionaire Koch brothers.” These quotes sound a lot like Sullivan’s. Is she taking cues from out-ofstate left-wingers? Sullivan expends many words focusing on statistics without meaning, ignoring the merits of the well-stated agenda of AFP and state GOP candidates themselves. Such distractions are

part of the political game, but that doesn’t make them honest or helpful to voters trying to make informed choices. Perhaps that’s former Chairman Sullivan’s goal: obfuscation in service to a national political party. Maybe I’m betraying my NH heritage, but I agree with the writings and actions of a “group out of Virginia” to use Sullivan’s phrase. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, to name a few, remind us that good ideas are not constrained by state boundaries. Ken Gorrell lives in Northfield, NH and is a defense-industry consultant.

been an explosion of legitimate political aspirations as well as an implosion of dark intolerant forces which have shattered the social order. The crossfire of inter-Islamic Sunni/Shiite conflict has reemerged with a vengeance, ethnic strife has boiled over, and Christian minorities especially the Copts of Egypt, and the Christians in Syria and Iraq have become scapegoats for a vengeful new order which will ultimately consume itself. During Syria’s bitter civil war, an admittedly authoritarian but secular Assad regime is locked in battle with a gaggle of rebel groups, many of whom sadly are not freedom fighters as often portrayed in the West, but hardline Islamic jihadis. In the town of Maaloula, forty miles north of Damascus, the 5,000 member Christian enclave, one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, still speaks Aramaic, the lan-

guage of Jesus Christ, along with Arabic. According to the French humanitarian group, SOS Christians of the Orient, Churches and convents have been targeted by the terrorists “in a hatred reserved specifically for Christians. Though large parts of Maaloula have been devastated by the militants, the SOS group is working to rebuild the church of St. George this August as one small step towards restoring normalcy. The crisis for believers in Iraq is even more acute. Today there are approximately 400,000 to 500,000 Christians in the country, about half the number which existed in 2003 before the Anglo/American invasion. In the last few years and especially since June, attacks on Christian communities have multiplied as an ineffective Iraqi government lost effective control. According to Msgr. Louis Sako, patriarch

of the Chaldean church, “These wars and persecutions are a return to the Middle Ages. Hunting down people for reasons of faith, this is barbarism and savagery. In the name of what can you force these people to convert to Islam? It is against liberty and human rights. In an extraordinary interview in Le Figaro, a leading French philosopher Pascal Bruckner, speaking of the Islamic state adds, “When they come to power they inscribe their symbol N(Nazarene) on the door of Christians which reminds us of the yellow star of the Jews in the Second world war. How long can we continue to look the other way

Although liberals are usually gung ho for increasing the minimum wage, there was a sympathetic front page story in the July 29th San Francisco Chronicle about the plight of a local non-profit organization that will not be able to serve as many lowincome minority youths if it has to pay a higher minimum wage. They are seeking some kind of exemption. Does it not occur to these people that the very same thing happens when a minimum wage increase applies to profit-based employers? They too tend to hire fewer inexperienced young people when there is a minimum wage law. This is not breaking John J. Metzler is a news.
