NH’s Newest Drive-In Theater Is A Taste Of The Past by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

New Hampshire’s newest Drive-In Theater can be seen in an open field off of Rte 302 in Bethlehem. It shows movie favorites to an appreciative audience who watch while sitting in their antique and classic cars or, if they don’t drive a classic, in the lawn

chairs they brought from home. It’s a great evening that anyone in the community can get involved in- and it’s all for charity. The Beech Hill Drive-In is a step back in time and a true preservation of a part of American culture that has been vanishing. It is something that the whole family can enjoy and the price of admission

is merely a contribution to Bethlehem’s Food Bank. The idea started with Phil Bell III last year while on vacation with his family at Boothbay Harbor, Maine. His father, Phil Bell II was reading a car magazine and was commenting on a picture of a little ride-on train at a Drive-In Theatre that were used to attract parents to

bring their kids. “I said how cool would it be to have something like that again,” said the elder Phil. “Then my son said ‘Dad, let’s build a Drive-In Theatre on the field where we do the car shows.” For the past six years, Phil has been holding antique and classic car shows on the large field See drive in on 10

On Thursday, September 10, at 7 PM “The Traveling Trunk” from the Wright Museum of World War II will be at the Rochester Historical Society Museum on Hanson Street. Dan Schroeder, a Wright Museum volunteer, opens the trunk filled with significant memorabilia from both the home and war fronts during World War II. The artifacts, and the stories Schroeder tells, bring the war years alive and help people of all ages understand the reality of the sacrifices made both by the soldiers and the people at home. The Wright Museum of World War II is located in Wolfeboro, NH. It is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contributions and enduring legacy of World War II era Americans. All are welcome to attend. There is no charge for admission and refreshments will follow the meeting. For more information please call the Rochester Historical Society at 3303099 or e-mail rochesterhistorical@metrocast.net.

Gilmanton’s Program on 3 Little-Known NH Authors On Friday, September 4 at 7pm. Slate Magazine history writer Rebecca Onion will visit The Scriven Arts Colony (452 New Hampshire Route 140, Gilmanton, NH 03237) to give a 45-minute talk about three little-known New Hampshire authors—the Nelson Brothers of Goshen, NH. The Nelsons were late 19th century farm boys, and in their early youth, writing on spare scraps of paper, they created a fictional universe replete with its own land masses (the Big, Round, and Long Continents,), as well as its own farm fields and wars. Rebecca Onion’s talk is based on May 2015 story she wrote for Slate. The piece was entitled “Boyhood.” Rebecca grew up in Gilmanton Corners and attended Yale University before earning a Ph.D in American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Her book, Innocent Experiments: Childhood and the Culture of Public Science in the United States, will be published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2016. She is available for print and radio interviews.

This week we continue and conclude our twopart series on an 1879 account of a rowboat trip around Lake Winnipesaukee which was originally published in the Weirs Times in October of 1993. It was provided to us by Mary Mansfield Plancon of Meredith. It is transcribed from a very fragile, handwritten log that her grandfather, Ellery Channing Mansfield, wrote on his trip around the lake that year. Some of the islands and other locations were known by other names in those days. If you wish to follow along, please refer to our lake map on pages 24 & 25. Where possible we have numbered the location to follow with the story. The first-part ended with Mr. Mansfield on Barndoor Island (1) near Wolfeboro on a rainy night and he stayed overnight in a shanty.

the afternoon & got some blueberries & started for Clay Pt (2) about 6 & went up by an old deserted farm & over the high hill on to the road & got some milk at a house a mile & a half walk from the boat. Came back to the shanty & got supper & went to bed about nine. August 18th It still rains & blows rained hard all night tis pretty cold. Stayed at the shanty all day. Fixed some handles on our chests & did several jobs & cleaned & washed the boat out. Had some hasty pudding & molasses & went to bed at 8:30. Rained all day a regular northeaster. August 19th Woke up at 4:30 & found the wind had changed to the west & was blowing into our beach on the boat. Rushed for the boat & stripped off the canvas & found it full & everything floating around in the boat. It was blowing the hardest I ever saw it on the Lake & the waves dashed clear over the end of the island & up to the shanty as much as

50 feet from the shore. Jumped in the water with our clothes on & managed to unload the stuff & pushed it out so the stern faced the breakers & got it up so we could hitch the bow line to a tree root- & we had to take the chain & hitch the chain to a long ladder that we

Kuster & Planned Parenthood To the Editor: In a recent newspaper commentary, NH Rep. Annie Kuster tries to defend federal funding for Planned Parenthood, claiming those of us who don’t want our tax dollars to go toward that organization are extremists. She lists the services that are provided by Planned Parenthood, making it sound as if women would be without reproductive services if it were not for Planned Parenthood, but she fails to mention the 13,540 clinics across the nation that provide comprehensive health care for millions of uninsured, working poor and jobless women. Planned Parenthood would not cease to exist

without federal funding. They are quite capable of running without federal money, but then they wouldn’t have as much money to give to Democrat politicians. According to the Center for Responsive Politics report, and as filed in 2014 with the FEC, PLANNED PARENTHOO D A C T I O N F U N D INC. PAC (FEC Committee ID: C00314617) total contributions to U.S. House members were: Democrats: $404,907 (Rep. Kuster received $7,500); Republicans: $2,823 (One Rep in NY). Total contributions to Senators were: Democrats: $181,188 (Senator Shaheen received $8,899); Republicans: $0 Is it any wonder why Kuster, Shaheen and other Democrats want our tax dollars to go to Planned Parenthood?

The Sun Could Cost You Your Life! To The Editor: Did you know that one blistering sun burn or five sunburns over your life will more than double your chances of getting

melanoma (skin cancer)! According to skincancer. org one person dies from melanoma every hour. The best way to protect yourself is to wear sunscreen when outdoors or to seek shade. The hours of 10 am to 4 pm have the strongest ultra violet (UV) rays and thus is the most dangerous time of day. Don’t be fooled, 80% of UV rays come through the clouds, thus you still need sunscreen on a cloudy day. Contrary to what people may think, you still need to wear sunscreen in the winter as well given that the UV rays still pose a threat. When applying sunscreen, two tablespoons or more of SPF30 is appropriate. Don’t forget to use lip balm with SPF as well and sunglasses to protect your eyes. A helpful website with more information on the best sunscreens to use is http://www.ewg.org. You can be safe in the sun, but you need to be smart and protect yourself. Thank you very much for reading this article. I am working on a Girl Scout project to increase the awareness of the dangers of the sun. Elizabeth West

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

My Trump Card

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

All the excitement over the upcoming presidential race has really gotten me to thinking. Next year I will most likely be involved again in my own campaign for governor of New Hampshire running under the Flatlander Ticket. To those of you who have ever run for political office over and over again (and you know who you are) you understand how hard it is to come up with new ways every election cycle to campaign and make the same old hot air sound like brand new hot air. That is why I have been studying all of the folks who are running for president this year. Yes, there are many of them who are using the tried and true method of avoiding answering questions and just getting to their standard talking points (Boring Hillary!) But this year there is one candidate who, since he doesn’t go by the political campaigning rule book, has found a lot of new ways of spouting hot air without most people realizing that that is what he is doing. It seems to be working well and this candidate is doing quite well in the polls. Whether or not this new way of campaigning will increase his poll numbers as time goes on or eventually comes back to bite him when people start to realize he really isn’t saying much, is left to be seen. People, being sick and tired of politics and politicians as usual and hungry for a

more entertaining process all around, may just keep hanging in there in the belief that this will really be something different for once. I, for one, am paying close attention. If this new way of campaigning works, I may just have to use it myself in my next run for governor. I have been running for sixteen years now without much luck. I have tried everything, even being completely honest and telling people I only wanted the job for the money (100,000 a year for two years is pretty sweet). None of it has ever worked. So, if this candidate continues to pack ‘em in and gathers more and more support using his unconventional methods of telling people a whole lot of entertaining nothing, then maybe I will try the same thing come next year. I’ve already been practicing my delivery without taking it on the road, just to see if I can do it. I must admit it is kind of fun to just say anything that pops into your head without a filter. The other day I was in the store, bought a small item and was told by the cashier “That will be two dollars and fifty cents. I thought this the perfect opportunity to practice. “Are you telling me this because you think I don’t know? I know how much it is. In fact, it was my consumer buying habits that helped establish this price and I’ve got more than enough to pay for it. In fact, I have twenty dollars. I can buy that five times over and still have enough for a soda. Two sodas if I want. I have more twenty dollar bills at home. I love twenty dollar bills. The cashier looked at me strangely, but I must admit it felt good. I think I can do this. If, for instance, next year a reporter asks me if I am

going to campaign at the Sandwich Fair I will say something like: “What? Are you kidding me? Of course I am. The people in Sandwich love me. Whenever I go there they all come out to see me. There’s always a lot of people there because I’m there. They are great people, the Sandwich people. I love them and their sandwiches and they love me as well. When asked about particular and pressing issues facing our state today like the budget, crime and other things, I won’t have to take the tedious way of trying to explain, like most politicians, an actual solution that probably won’t happen, I can just say: “We’ll change that. I’ve got ideas right here (pointing to head) that you’ll love. They will be the best ideas ever and I will think them up myself and they will be great. It’s easy and you’ll love them and you’ll love me even more for thinking of them. I might be the best ideas governor of New Hampshire God ever created and leave it at that to thunderous cheers. I might even suggest, just for fun, that the New Hampshire welcome signs take off “Live Free or Die and replace it with “You’ll Love Our Governor. He’s Awesome. If this method of campaigning proves to be successful, nothing will be more fun than calling my opponents “idiots and “losers and have people laugh and cheer. What a fun time that would be. I am anxious to see if this new method of saying little in entertaining and unfiltered ways will really work in getting someone elected. If it does, I’m ready to hit the ground blathering and I promise you’ll like me, you’ll really like me. Visit Brendan’s website at www.BrendanTSmith. com.

Obama’s Toxic Environmental Pollution Agency Here in my adopted home state of Colorado, orange is the new Animas River thanks to the blithering idiots working under Presiby Michelle Malkin dent Obama’s Syndicated Columnist Environmental Protection Agency. It’s just the latest man-caused disaster from an out-of-control bureaucracy whose primary mission is not the Earth’s preservation, but self-preservation. As always, the government cover-up compounds the crime -which is why the agency’s promise this week to investigate itself has residents across the Rocky Mountains in stitches. Or tears. After the EPA and officials and their contract workers accidentally spilled three million gallons of pent-up toxic sludge on August 5 from a defunct mine in San Juan County that hadn’t operated since 1923, EPA apparatchiks delayed notifying residents for more than 24 hours. They vastly underestimated the volume and spill rate of gunk. Then, while refusing to release data, EPA head Gina McCarthy flew to the glowing river to fecklessly declare that the water “seems to be restoring itself.” The cleanup costs for the Colorado spill alone are estimated at $30 billion. Small farmers, ranchers and tourist-related businesses will be reeling for years to come -- yet the EPA is simultaneously pushing forward with Draconian ozone regulations (based on cherry-picked junk science) that will punish the state’s residents with

no discernible health benefits. If only Mother Nature could help wash away the institutionalized corruption that has been leaching from Obama’s EPA headquarters since Day One: -BP Oil Spill Data Doctoring. Former White House Director of the Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy Carol Browner and the EPA suffered no consequences after they repeatedly lied and cooked the books in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010. Browner, who pulled the puppet strings of then-EPA head Lisa Jackson, misled the public about the scope of the disaster by falsely claiming that 75 percent of the spill was “completely gone from the system.” Then she falsely claimed that the administration’s initial report on the disaster was “peer-reviewed.” The Interior Department inspector general also singled out Browner for misrepresenting the White House’s blue-ribbon science panel, which opposed a six-month drilling moratorium, and exposed how she butchered their conclusions to justify the administration’s preordained policy agenda. Browner, an inveterate left-wing crony lobbyist/activist, left office without so much as a wrist slap. Brazen data doctoring and destruction are her fortes. As EPA head during the Clinton administration in the 1990s, she was held in contempt by a federal judge after ordering a staffer to purge and delete her computer files. Browner had sought to evade a public disclosure lawsuit by conservative lawyer and author Mark Levin’s Landmark Legal Foundation. -Email Evasion And Transpar-

The Re-Writing of American History

As a mom of a high schooler, and an advocate AGAINST the federal beast known as Common Core, I try to pay attention to the everby Jane Cormier changing educaHooksett, NH. tional system we are now experiencing. Here is some information you may find interesting. In doing some research about upcoming changes to the AP High School exams, I came across some deep thought-provoking articles. One writer, Wilfred H. McClay, Professor of History at University of Oklahoma writes “…the study of history is different from any other academic subject. It is not merely a body of knowledge…it ushers the individual person into membership in a common world, and situates them in space and time. This is especially true in a democracy.” See malkin on 8 Historian Donald Kagan goes

on to write,” Democracy requires a patriotic education…its success depends upon the active participation of its citizens in their own governance, and without such an education there would be no way to persuade free individuals of the need to make sacrifices for the sake of the greater good.” For me, these two quotes uncovered the seed needed to germinate Progressivism. In Progressivism, the actual process of the democratic republic MUST be subverted and/or controlled in order to promote NON participation within our Republic. Now, if one looks at our educational system and where the assessment driven curriculum of Common Core is taking our youth and ultimately our country, it is clear this process is well under way. Parents beware. So now we move to the recent controversy over the new Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History framework being adSee cormier on 36

Syrian Apocalypse UNITED NATIONS — Syria

continues to descend into the inferno while the international community stands transby John J. Metzler fixed. A politSyndicated Columnist ical solution seems elusive as ever, the civil war grinds on having killed over 250,000 people, and more than twelve million people have fled their homeland. Alarmed by these developments, the UN Security Council has affirmed its support for finding a durable political settlement to a crisis which after four years of fighting not only threatens Syria, but dangerously has morphed into a regional threat. “The Security Council stresses that the only sustainable solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive Syrianled political process that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people,” a consensus statement says. The French-led initiative was the first time in two years that the Council specifically issued a political statement concerning the conflict. Significantly Russia has agreed to this nebulous political process along with the USA and UK. In other words, besides treating the humanitarian symptoms, let’s try to solve the problem.

Importantly the Council focused its attention on terrorist groups such as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Al Nusrah front, as well as Al Qaida affiliates. The fifteen member Council, “condemns the ongoing and multiple terrorist” acts by these groups which “destabilizes Syria and the region with a devastating humanitarian impact on the civilian population.” Let’s review the circles of Hell into which Syria has descended. The Political; UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated yet again that there can be no military solution to the Syrian conflict and calls for a political solution. Opposition to the Assad Family regime which exploded during the Arab Spring in 2011 has evolved from a quasi-democratic opposition movement into a plethora of terrorist groups intent at topping the authoritarian Assad with the intent of installing a radical theocratic Islamic regime. Both the Al Nusra front, and the ISIL form the leading edge of a lethal opposition which if they triumph, would create a fundamentalist Sunni state which borders five countries, all of them American allies, and including Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Naive attempts by the Obama Administration to recruit and support “moderate” resistance

fighters have turned out to be a sad and costly joke. The Military; ISIL’s stunning military sweeps across northern Syria and Iraq has concentrated attention. The thousands of foreign fighters from Western

Europe and even the USA which have joined the “Jihad Internationale,” fighting in Syria have added a dangerous ingredient to the conflict. While the Syrian government forces and regimeSee Metzler on 36

Immigration Excuses One of the most lame excuses for doing nothing is that we can’t do everything. Such excuses have been repeated endlessly, even by some conby Thomas Sowell s e r v a t i v e s , Syndicated Columnist when it comes to illegal immigration. We can’t deport millions of illegal immigrants already living in the country, some say, so the wise thing is to just learn to live with them, according to the supposedly sophisticated crowd. This completely sidesteps the plain, obvious and galling fact that we are not deporting those illegal immigrants who are arrested by the police for violating other laws -- and are then turned loose back into American society. In so-called “sanctuary cities” across the country, local police are under orders not to report illegal immigrants to the federal authorities. Nobody has a right to obstruct justice when it comes to federal laws -- not even the President of the United States, as Richard Nixon discovered when he had to resign after Democrats threatened him with impeachment and Republican Senators told him that they would not defend him. Today, any mayor of any city of any size across the country can publicly announce that he is going to obstruct federal laws against illegal immigrants -- and then bask in a glow of self-satisfaction and the prospect of winning votes. Even people who are gung-ho to punish employers who do not take on the role of immigration police, for which they have neither training nor authority, are often ready to overlook elected officials who do have both the duty and

the authority to uphold the laws, but openly refuse to do so. The federal government itself, under the Obama administration, has refused to enforce immigration laws, and has ordered its own agents to back off when it comes to enforcing some laws that President Obama happens not to like. Then there is also what might be called the pretense of enforcement -- when people who have been caught illegally entering the country are turned loose inside the country and told to report back to a court later on. How surprised should we be when they don’t? One of the most widely known abuses of the immigration laws is the creation of “anchor babies” to get automatic citizenship when a pregnant woman simply crosses the U.S. border to have her child born on American soil. This is not limited to people who cross the Mexican border. Some are flown in from Asia to waiting posh facilities. Not only do their children get automatic American citizenship without having to meet any requirements, this also increases the opportunities for other family members to gain admission later on, in the name of “family reunification.” This is such an obvious racket, and so widely known, for so long, that you might think our “responsible” leaders would agree that it should be stopped. But, here again, there are excuses rather than action. One distinguished conservative commentator even said recently that this is such a small problem that it is not worth bothering with. The anger of Americans who feel betrayed by their own elected officials is not a small thing. It goes to the heart of what self-government by “we the people” is supposed to mean. See Sowell on 32

While Browner was doing her dirty work as Obama’s unaccountable eco-czar, Jackson busied herself creating sock-puppet email personalities to circumvent public disclosure rules as the agency crafted radical climatechange policies in secret. She learned the tricks of the trade from Browner. Jackson admitted to using the pseudonym “Richard Windsor on one of at least two separate secret government accounts. Competitive Enterprise Institute fellow Christopher Horner discovered the elaborate ruses in 2012. The agency had stonewalled Horner’s FOIA requests on the use of alias accounts at the agency; CEI sued to force

the administration to comply. In December 2012, Jackson resigned amid multiple investigations. Not a wrist slap. Not a scratch. In March of this year, a federal judge blasted the agency for avoiding a separate FOIA request by Levin’s Landmark Legal Foundation related to sock-puppet email accounts created by Jackson and others “who may have delayed the release dates for hot-button environmental regulations until after the Nov. 6, 2012, presidential election. Apple Computer hired Jackson in 2013 (and all of her multiple personalities). Two months ago, the company proudly announced that it was promoting Jackson to “vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives and head of the company’s “global government affairs and public policy teams. -Enabling Sex Predators And Porn Addicts. Last month, the EPA inspector general finally testified on Capitol Hill about the agency’s chronic mismanagement of alleged sexual perverts on the payroll. One employee “engaged in offensive and inappropriate behavior toward at least 16 women, most of whom were EPA co-workers, the IG reported. Supervisors “were

made aware of many of these actions and yet did nothing. Well, not exactly “nothing. The employee was actually promoted to assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Homeland Security -- a position he used to harass six more women. Two other EPA workers were caught binging on porn during work hours; one was observed getting his X-rated fix by a minor who was at the office during Bring Your Child To Work Day. EPA allowed one perv to retire with full benefits; the other is still on leave collecting a $120,000 yearly salary. -Double Standards. Data destruction. Imposition of radical job-killing regulations. Law-breaking with impunity. Only in Washington does a rogue government agency with an $8 billion budget get away with such serial incompetence and criminality in the name of the “public good. Protecting the environment has become a full employment racket for green crooks and cronies. For the last 25 years, Colleen Sgroi has made her living as a full time artist. Her success is certainly of her own doing but hearing her story will reveal the decisions she made that brought her to the present - working in a charming studio space in Billerica, MA. Colleen received training in graphic design at a technical school and she has done a fair amount of work in this area. She is quite flexible about opportunities and is quite open to what the universe sends her way. Inspired by the work of Charles Wysocki, a noted folk painter, Colleen took up painting in the folk art style. Her inspiration is, well, everything! Colleen is inspired by architecture, nature and design - all of which end up in her original works of art. Colleen’s first art show was in Miami and came to fruition after a friend nudged her to enter. To h e r s u rprise, Colleen sold 5 paintings of New England scenes and won 2nd place in oils! In another show in Boca Raton, Colleen had an auspicious meeting with a New York publisher of art. This publisher entered into a business arrangement to publish some of her works, starting with a four seasons grouping. Seeing the opportunity to work in a series, Colleen obliged and this small shift in thinking introduced her into the world of royalty checks. Over time, networking

“Summer Painting” by Colleen Sgroi. has resulted in a Noah’s Arc image in the Baby Einstein series, art in the Lion’s Gate Film titled: My Pretty Valentine and a lighthouse image in NCI New Orleans! The outdoor art show circuit offered Colleen a learning curve and served as some great networking opportunities. Traveling to shows involves packing up one’s oeuvre and setting up camp somewhat like a nomad. It can be grueling to be a traveling artist. After Colleen had her fill of being the traveling artist, she made the shift to having a space where the public came to her. You might recall the saying, “build it and they will come.” In fact, it

takes a bit more effort than that. Colleen now offers painting classes for all ages. Over the years Colleen has built up a following of students from children to teens to adults. Presently, Colleen has a staff of artist teachers who help her with the volume of classes. In the spirit of creativity, Colleen offers discounted classes to seniors. Her gallery serves as a teaching space that features a wall of her student artist works in addition to an amazing selection of Colleen’s own works. Watercolor studies offer less expensive purchases for gallery visitors. Colleen also creates See smith on 29

Migration Mysteries by Steve White Contributing Writer

Have you noticed the daylight hours are waning, nights are cooler, and mornings are turning frosty? Nature has noticed these phenomenons for a number of weeks. Wild birds migrate for a variety of reasons; to escape foul weather, to search for a nesting site, or to locate consistent food sources. The real mystery of migration is not why birds perform this ritual but how. Just exactly how does a hummingbird that weighs less than 3 dimes travel each year for a total of 5,000 miles, including a 500 mile non-stop journey over the Gulf of Mexico, and arrive within a yard of last year’s home territory? How does an artic tern accomplish an annual, roundtrip of over 22,000 miles from Alaska to Antarctic? Did you know that long distance, transoceanic migrants can spend over 1000 miles in the air in a single span without landing? How do they flap their wings so long? Do birds migrate at night, using the stars as navigation or during the day using aerial landmarks? The path during the migration route is fraught with dangers. Some of these natural and unnatural threats are predation, hunting, habitat loss, window collisions, human lighting that confuses navigation, etc. Wild birds can travel at speeds up to 50 miles per hour, depending on wind conditions, the bird species, and the path of the

flight. Research has documented homing pigeons covering 1,000 miles in just 36 hours. For example, a shearwater, a European sea bird, was removed from its burrow in Wales, flown over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Boston and released. This remarkable bird navigated its way back to the original Wales nesting territory in only 12 days! There has been much research on how birds accomplish these enormous trips using homing pigeons as the basis of their analysis. Pigeons, like most birds, are active during the daytime. They use the sun’s position in the sky as a form of compass. As the sun’s position changes throughout the day, the pigeon automatically compensates for these changes.

found at the shanty & fasten the end of the ladder to a tree back on the island. Had to go into the breakers up to my armpits with my clothes on. In a few minutes she would have been all stove up on the rocks as she had got driven around so she laid side almost on the rocks & the breakers growing higher. They would dash up 10 feet high on the shore. Got her fastened so she lay bedded in the sand held by the weight of water in her & the chain from the bow. Came in & wrung our clothes out & built a fire in the stove & dried off. Had a shirt tail parade? for a couple hours. Had breakfast off of a can

of beans we saved from the wreck. The sea was so heavy that the Mt Washington pitched considerable as she passed by off the island on the way to Alton Bay (3). We got the whole surf of the Lake on the west side of the island for 25 miles. The sun finally came out at 10:30 but the wind has not abated much yet at 11 o’clock. The breakers are dashing clean over the boat now as she lays up on the beach. Went back on the island & got some berries in the afternoon. The wind went down a little towards night & we managed by bailing fast to get ahead of the waves that were dashing over it & got it so it would float.

Spindle Point on Meredith Neck. Pulled it clear up on the island after bailing it out & found the calking had worked out of two long seams & it leaked badly. Made a kettle of pudding & went to bed. August 20th The wind had mostly gone down but the sea run high yet. Managed to get to Wolfeboro (4) by

bailing fast & keeping up with the leak. Wolfeboro is about 2 1/2 miles. Hauled the boat up on a beach by the slaughterhouse & after getting a lunch on cold pudding & molasses started for the village. Got some materials for stopping the leaks & some provisions & went back & fixed the boat up & went back to town & got shaved & stayed about Wolfeboro & went up to the Glendon & went back to the boat & started about 6 PM for Alton Bay (3). Went right by the shanty on Barndoor (1) & to the beach around Black Point (5) towards Alton. Stayed there overnight. August 21st Went to Alton Bay (3), stopped at a farm on the right & got some milk. Got some provisions & at Alton & wrote to Capt. Long & went down the coast about a mile & got dinner on a beach followed along the left hand shore out as far as Little Mark Is (6) & went over & visited Moose Is (7) which is a little bit of Is out in the broads. The wind began to course up & we started towards the Alton shore & followed along as far as west Alton (8) & stopped at a beach in a cove near a farmer named Rollins. Went up there & got some milk. Killed a hedge hog in the woods in there very near the boat.

August 22nd Followed along the Alton shore & crossed over to Diamond (9) by the end of Rattlesnake (10). Found a man keeping Hotel in the house. Stayed about an hour & crossed back to the beach on the shore & got dinner. Went in swimming & took a nap. Went up to a farm house & got some milk & followed the Guilford shore along as far as Carrs (11) & went up & got some potatoes & cider. Went right across from the beach at Carrs to Welch Island (12) about 1/2 miles & stopped at the shanty on the Is & got supper in the shanty & had some baked potatoes. Slept in the boat around the end of the island towards Long island (13). August 23rd Explored the Island. The wind was blowing so hard we did not start until afternoon. Made a kettle of pudding. Started for Timber Is (14) but it blew so we had to cut across & get behind the forties (C5) & come up in the leeward of Timber. Called at Little Mark where there is a shanty & over by Hutchinsons shanty on Timber. They were all stopping there & across the broads to Lockes Is (15). It was blowing very hard. Went down to Thompsons beach & got some milk & dinner in See trip on 18

LOCAL EXPERIENCED BANKRUPTCY ATTORNEY

Black vs White, Elites vs Conservatives- No End in Sight What will Obama do post-presidency? He and Al Sharpton will travel around giving incendiary by Niel Young Advocates Columnist speeches to cause racial tensions, and get $700 thousand for that speech! Especially if a republican president is in the White House. Since it is hard to tell who will not be easy to determine who deserves the disability checks (excluding wounded warriors) between those working the system, illegal aliens, and folks who would like to work, but jobs are gone, why not just become unproductive, and live the American Dream of living off from my working fellow Americans? I have to get me one of those cards, you the ones that allow me to just withdraw money out of that special money machine. What a country! Everything is free, if you know how to play the game! I believe that 75% of the people in the USA know or knows of someone who is cheating, and is taking revenue that you and I know that could really help some folks who are trying their hearts out to stay afloat. Now, there are options. We can quit working altogether. Obama can fill those jobs with Illegal Aliens. After all, isn’t that why we needed them; to do the jobs Americans won’t do? See, Obama socialism, and no more worrying. Well, until all of the American companies, and other corporations, are taxed so high to cover all of us who have decided it isn’t worth it to work, move the company to another country. Sound pretty good, does it? BREIBART: “The Consultant Class continues

its serial-meltdown over the rise of Donald Trump. Already this week, and in front of the entire Internet, top GOP consultant Rick Wilson lit himself on fire by politicizing a rape threat against his own child. Cheri Jacobus picked up Wilson’s genius-baton under the deranged belief that the best way to win elections is by marginalizing and insulting the most reliable of Republican voters. Jacob Perry claims he’s a friend of Wilson’s but that didn’t stop him from gleefully seizing the rape threat as a political opportunity to attack Breitbart News and pretty much everyone else in the conservative movement. As you’ll see below, this Republican consultant has nothing but dismissive contempt for the millions of everyday voters who make up the conservative base and dare listen to Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. (And me). In the recent past I received a call that many of the contributors to The Laconia Daily Sun paper were going to have lunch. There would be progressives, liberals, and a few conservatives breaking bread together. Cracraft, Meade, Boutin and others would be there. It was an opportunity to get to know each other. Sounded interesting, however I just do not get along well with Liberals aka Progressives. That is by design! After almost 7 years of King Barack Hussein conservatives and moderates of the republican organization did very little to slow the demise of Obama’s Amerika. HE was the enemy that the Establishment republicans were too lazy or just plain scared to openly oppose his changing of America. For those of us who love our country and what we once stood for, it is time to get off the

bench and INSIST that our republicans lead, follow, or give up the seat because they are useless! In your business you cannot fire everybody, so make an example of one employee (got your vote) by informing that one republican that she (Kelly Ayotte) has not listened to us regarding many big issues. She has not stood up to Jeanne Shaheen or Barack Obama, and it is time to come home. Perhaps Ann Kuster and Frank Guinta will get the message. I am willing to give him another 2 years, and not give Kelly 6 more! After all, Kelly was the only person to call for Frank to step down! And his potential primary opponents are RINOs, one male married to another man shows questionable judgement in my opinion. At July 23 Breibart: “GOP Elites Plot to Bar Frontrunner Trump from Debates. WE, are America, and the GOP Elites, Establishment, the Press, TV, and to radio talk show hosts who may be republicans, WE will not take your finger wagging in our face. WE can use our vote, or withhold that vote! ******** Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors: “In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. ... This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists’ tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists’ antagonism toward the gold standard.

DEAR TIM: My wife and I moved into a new condominium building in March 2009. When it rains and there's heavy wind, we get water leaking through the brick. A gentle rain shower with the rain falling straight down causes no problems. What is causing the problem? There are many older brick buildings on the street that are well over 100 years old and none of them leak. Is there anything that can be done that will stop the leaks, or do the exterior walls have to be completely rebuilt? --Stanley P., Brooklyn, N.Y.

DEAR STANLEY: It's a shame you're experiencing this common problem. Not too many years ago I used to do quite a bit of expert witness work in construction-defect cases. I was the lead witness in a huge case in the Midwest against a very large builder. He built many brick-veneer homes and every one of them had leakage similar to what you describe. My testimony about what was going on and how to fix it carried the day for the homeowners. Here's a fact that's been

To say that it is a small thing is even worse than saying that we can’t do anything about it. We certainly can’t do anything about it if we won’t lift a finger to try. Some legal authorities say that the 14th Amendment confers automatic citizenship on anyone born on American soil. But the very authors of that Amendment said otherwise. And some distinguished legal scholars today, including Professor Lino Graglia of the University of Texas Law School, say otherwise. Even if it were necessary to revise the 14th Amendment, it is sheer Progressive era dogma that Constitutional Amendments are nearly impossible to revise, repeal or

create. There were four new Constitutional Amendments added in just eight years, during the height of the Progressive era in the early 20th century. But it is indeed impossible if you are just looking for excuses for not trying. Republicans who are worried about Donald Trump should be. But their own repeated betrayals of their supporters set the stage for his emergence. This goes all the way back to “Read my lips, no new taxes. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www. tsowell.com.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, August 27, 2015 builder from 19

side of your condo would leak. Two or three hundred years ago this leakage issue was known. The builders who experienced leakage solved the problem by modifying how they built solid masonry buildings. They used different brick and they used a lime mortar different from today's high-strength mortars. The lime mortar has a unique self-healing property where it can grow new crystals when a hairline crack develops. It's too bad most masons don't use this lime mortar in modern construction. Your new condominium building and the older solid masonry buildings in your neighborhood may look similar on the outside, but that's where it stops. The older brick buildings on your street have exterior walls that contain a minimum of two layers of brick. Some buildings have exterior walls that have three layers of brick. The builders of old discovered that the brick you see on the outside needs to be a hard brick that resists weathering. The brick they used there was fired in the kilns for a longer time and at a hotter temperature. Some types of brick made in this way are so hard they can resist Mother Nature's punishment for hundreds of years. But the brick masons discovered they also needed a softer brick that soaks up water. This was the brick they placed behind the one you see on the outside of the old buildings. The softer brick sucked up the rain water and then allowed it to evaporate back to the exterior of the building just after the rainstorm ended. The dynamic of the rain water leakage is simple. Think about hammering a nail into wood. You tap the nail with the hammer and each blow drives the nail deeper into the wood. When a violent rainstorm hits your building, the first drop of water crashes against the brick

and some water enters. The next droplet of rain, along with the force of the wind, pushes the first water droplet deeper into the wall. As the rain and wind continue, soon you have a minor waterfall happening on the backside of the first layer of brick. This is the water that's leaking into your condo. This leakage has been well documented by building scientists for decades. The Brick Institute of America (BIA) has technical notes and bulletins that talk about this leakage and how to prevent it when building. Your building's architect and builder should have followed the advice given by the BIA. These technical bulletins have been available for free for decades and can now be accessed easily from the BIA website. A small company in Indiana has been working on solutions to this poor workmanship problem for decades. I met and know the owner of this company. He's written several industry white papers about brick veneer leakage. The name of the company is Saver Systems. Your condo association can purchase two products from this company that may solve the problem. They require expert workmanship when applying them to get the best results. The first product is a silane/siloxane clear water repellent. This product is sprayed on the entire exterior wall. It's very important that a second worker operates a powerful leaf blower to drive the water repellent deep into the wall. This blower acts like the wind during a rainstorm and drives the water repellent deep into the wall. The second product that's needed is a clear crack and joint sealant. This is carefully brushed onto the mortar joints, and it must cover the entire mortar joint but not carry over too much onto the brick. If this sealant gets on the brick, a white haze can develop over time. An experienced applicator can carefully ap-

ply the sealant so it just touches up against the brick, sealing the invisible hairline cracks between the mortar and the brick. Understand that this fix is not guaranteed because the workmanship, materials used in your condominium building and/or the actual design may be

so bad that these two products can't overcome the deficiencies. I'd do a test on one part of your building and see what happens. If it's successful, then treat all the brick walls.

ministered by the College Board to U.S. high school students. As McClay writes, “The College Board argues that its 2014 revision of the AP exam has sought to make the exam more perfectly reflect the contents of a typical collegiate introductory survey course in history.” The problem is what was once bedrock in civic education is now a global approach squelching the American Experience. McClay goes on to explain that the 2014 test “…represents a lurch in the direction of more centralized control…an agenda that downplays comprehensive content knowledge in favor of interpretive finesse and seeks to deemphasize American citizenship and American world leadership in favor of a more global and transnational perspective. The new framework is organized around such opaque and abstract concepts as “identity”, “peopling”, and “human geography”. It gives only the most cursory attention to the traditional subjects, such as the sources, meaning, and development of America’s fundamental

institutions, notably the Constitution, and the narrative accounting of political events, such as elections, wars, and diplomacy.” Really? Let’s not equivocate here. We need to educate our children as to our FACTUAL American history, NOT the revisionist Progressive version. I have no desire or intention to be participatory in allowing Progressive educational ideology rewrite American history. It is up to us to engage and make sure our children are learning about their country’s founding as a Republic - NOT from a Progressive standpoint of “global citizenship”, but on the actual events and institutions which guided our history. So, do your duty, parents. My son probably willtake the AP History exam, but he will know EXACTLY what the game is all about. If we do not do our part, our children will only receive a very one-sided version of the American Experience. My duty as a parent is to make sure this doesn’t happen on MY watch. What about you?

allied militias have been bloodied and battered, the fact remains that weapons from Russia and Iran have been sufficient to maintain a perilous balance in parts of the country. Moscow and Tehran have respectively supported Assad’s Syria for both strategic and religious reasons. Syria’s multi-ethnic once secular society has now descended into a vicious sectarian conflict as much as a political one. The Muslim Sunni majority are battling the ruling Shiite (Alawite ) sect for power; ISIL Sunni terrorists target the country’s ancient Christian community as well as the Kurds. Realistically Syria could split and harden into religious/ethnic enclaves. The Humanitarian ; Twelve million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes; that’s about half the pre-war population! Four million have become refugees and are flooding into neighboring states especially Lebanon and Turkey. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Turkey hosts 1.8 million displaced persons, tiny

Lebanon 1.2 million, Jordan 629,000, and Iraq 250,000. Many of the fleeing Syrians are trying to sneak into Europe by makeshift and dangerous means to seek political asylum. Germany is a favorite destination. The Archaeological; ISIL’s wanton pillage and looting throughout northern Syria and Iraq has deliberately targeted an important and irreplaceable artistic heritage. Besides smashing statues and looting museums, without question some stolen art is being secretly sold to the lucrative international art black market. ISIL recently beheaded a prominent archaeologist Khalid al-Asaad in Palmyra, the ancient city seized by these thugs in the Spring. So can the world community really convince the Syrians to stop fighting and destroying their historic homeland ? Or is the cult of death and violence, the lure of power, sectarian hatreds, and competing geopolitical rivalries, too strong a toxin as to stop the conflict? John J. (There are real DriveIn movie Theatre speakers on the grounds from the now defunct Woodsville Drive-In that give the feel of a classic Drive-In but they don’t work.) With the Drive-In ready for opening, the first movie was “The Blues Brothers which would follow after the car show which went from 6-8pm. It is obvious that the most important aspect of the Drive-In to Phil Bell II is in giving back to the community since he is no

stranger to that. If you might recall last year we highlighted in our July 31, 2014 issue the hard work and dedication of Phil and others in the Bethlehem community who helped bring back the neglected and run down community pool and restore it to its original glory.
