Bringing A FiftyYear Old Pinball Back To Life by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Recently, Dana came across a 1963 Pinball “Swing-Along” manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Co. It has been sitting for years in the basement of See ashton on 39

The Long Live Summer Dance and Party Cruise in Portsmouth, takes place on Saturday, August 31st at 7:30pm onboard the M/V Thomas Laighton. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Out In The Open

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Now that I am a famous author, life has changed for me. Unless you live under a rock or in numerous homes, apartments or condos around New Hampshire, you haven’t heard about my book “The Flatlander Chronicles. It is a book that I have considered doing for years and, now that it had finally been published, my life has never been the same. I realize I have mentioned it in this column before and I really don’t mean to keep talking about. But it has made things a bit different for me and I thought I would share. I am hard pressed to go out in public anymore without someone recognizing me and doing their best not to pretend they don’t. This is all new to me. Over the years I have grown accustomed to being able to go wherever I wanted and not many folks would know who I am; I could easily blend into the crowd. Now, whenever I go out I’m constantly recognized by person after person and even though they pretend not to notice me, approach me or say a word, it is still a bit unnerving. Of course, that is one of the reasons I love living here, people are very respectful of my privacy. I know how hard it is

for some to see me and, wanting to come over and talk to me and get my autograph, they make a great effort to look the other way. Even though some do it out of respect, others may feel that I am unapproachable, that fame has found its way into my bloodstream and made me a bit of a monster. Kind of like Alec Baldwin. So, in order to let folks know that I am just like them, I have started to do a few things that I thought might help in breaking the ice, in letting them know that the door to me is always open. Often I will go out to eat and bring a copy of my book with me, just in case someone might have missed out and might want an autographed one. I don’t make a big deal about waving it around and talking loudly, like some authors I know. Instead, I place it carefully on the edge of the table so people will notice it and let them start the conversation if they choose. Still, the folks around here are so considerate that no one has ever stopped to talk about it. One waitress did notice it, picked it up and then placed it down without a word. I’m sure she wanted to say something but suddenly envisioned my ire and a possible confrontation where I would yell: “CAN’T YOU PLEASE JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!! causing a scene in the restaurant and possibly the end of her job there. Instead, she placed it across from me and put down the broccoli-flavored iced tea I ordered in its place. In the supermarket I will often have a copy of the book in that section of the shopping cart that

others use for their little children. I will cruise up and down the aisle, the cover of the book facing out, putting a few other things in my cart, I smile at others as I pass by, inviting any conversation that one might like to start, trying to be as approachable as possible. The other day, using this technique, I was finally approached by someone. I saw her looking into my cart and then at me. I held my breath, my heart racing. This could be the moment, others would see how easy it was to talk to me and then the floodgates would open. But it seems she lost her nerve at the last minute and asked: “Where did you find those chocolate covered asparagus tips? I’ve been looking all over the store for them. I told her and she left. I wanted to say that it was okay, she could admit she recognized me. I wouldn’t be upset. I was just like everyone else. But, I never got the opportunity as she raced as fast as she could, knocking other shoppers out of the way, in her effort to get to the candy-covered vegetable section. I have other ideas to bring people out of their shells, to help them understand that, even though I am now published, I have not let it go to my head. I will always remember my humble beginnings. After my next book is published, all bets are off. Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com. You can also follow his blog at www.foolinnh.com.

CROCKETT LOG & TIMBER HOMES

Peabody Brook, Dryad Fall and Austin Brook Trails -Shelburne, NH Off of North Road in Shelburne, NH, (just east of Gorham) there are a good number of trails over small peaks and along beautiful cascades. The Shelburne Trails Club has reclaimed these fabulous trails and put up nice looking new trail signs. I had hiked the trails behind the Philbrook Farm Inn and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to return again this summer. My old 1976 AMC White Mountain Guide still referred to the Peabody Brook Trail as part of the Appalachian Trail. I don’t know when the AT was moved from the Mahoosuc Trail to Peabody Brook. The current section of the AT is the Centennial Trail that opened in 1976 but not in time to be included in the Centennial edition of the guide. My friend Ellen and I started up the Peabody Brook Trail on a day the weather forecast promised scattered thundershowers. There had been a lot of rain already that week and it seemed like a nice idea to see some waterfalls. The trail follows Peabody Brook and after hiking about 1 ¼ miles we reached the spur trail to Giant Falls. The hike down to the falls is a little tricky and it drops down a long ways and then climbs again. Giant Falls is an impressive nearly vertical ledge surrounded by steep walls covered with trees growing in between large broken rock. This tough terrain is the reason why there is no shortcut back to the trail above. The trail really gets steep and there is even

The trail crews have the trail in fine condition and have built a new spur trail to the Bald Cap Peak’s ledges. a place where they decided to construct a ladder. I am sure back-inthe-day thru-hikers with their heavy packs greatly appreciated this ladder too. As we climbed higher we watched Peabody Brook get smaller and basically disappear into beaver habitat swampy area. We took the new spur trail to the top of Bald Cap Peak and this is where we ate a good snack and enjoyed a bit

of sunshine and fine mountain vista. Back on the trail we hopped from one new bog bridge to another thanks to a recent trail crew’s hard work. Just as we reached Dream Lake a cloud burst and we were instantly soaked. The bright side was there would be more water for the falls. From The State House

Bloated Government And Money “Carrots” So much is happening today with regard to federal programs gone amok. We have the notso-wonderful Obamacare telling us it by Rep. Jane will magically Cormier insure EVBelknap District 8 ERYONE and we will all live in a healthful, beautiful Utopia. We have the less-than-accountable Granite State Future which proposes to “…help communities integrate planning across sectors” and “plan for public infrastructure investment through an open and transparent process.” Unfortunately, we know none of this is factual. The Granite

State Future initiative is the New Hampshire version of an umbrella program directly connected to the Sustainable Communities Initiative, a federal top-down program combining input from HUD, EPA, and the DOT. The Regional Planning Commissions are insulated from the voters, setting up a layer of bureaucracy totally unaccountable to the taxpayer. Private property rights are NOT part of their agenda. And, of course we cannot forget, the Common Core which is a federal education initiative, again, without representation of the citizens involved, all under the guise of “rigorous” assessments (what the heck is “rigorous” anyway?). Sounds great, doesn’t it? NOT! When you look at these three See cormier on 20

The RNC Chair’s Horrific Open-Borders Pandering Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus had a message last week for outspoken conservatives who support strict by Michelle Malkin immigration Syndicated Columnist enforcement policies: Shut up. Yes, the head of the RNC is more concerned about protecting the party’s Hispanic vote-pandering campaign than protecting lawabiding citizens from the devastating consequences of illegal immigration. At the RNC’s annual summer meeting in Boston, Priebus complained that openly advocating self-deportation policies during last year’s election season was “horrific” and that rule-of-law rhetoric “hurts us.” Yes, really. So is it OK to discuss during offyear election cycles? Leap years? Weekends? Holidays? Can the GOP sensitivity police let us in on their approved immigration discussion calendar? Priebus has yet to explain what exactly is “horrific” about telling foreign rule-breakers that they shouldn’t wait for the government to eject them, and that the right thing for them to do would be to abide by our laws and go home on their own. This is an exceedingly and ridiculously polite policy suggestion, given how most other countries treat illegal line-jumpers, border-crossers, visa overstayers and deportation fugitives. But Priebus treats the idea as if it were an international human rights violation. Tellingly, the RNC chair has no response to the families of all races,

classes and creeds who have raised their voices against America’s perilous deportation abyss, systematic non-enforcement and coddling of illegal alien DREAMers who have wreaked violence and havoc on their lives. The relatives of murdered Los Angeles teen Jamiel Shaw posed a question to Priebus on Twitter after the RNC chair’s remarks at the GOP event last week touting minority outreach and diversity: “How many Americans Have U Talked To Whose Kids were Killed by illegals?” Priebus has not answered. As I first reported in 2008, 17year-old Jamiel was gunned down by 19-year-old illegal alien Mexican gang member Pedro Espinoza. Young Espinoza was smuggled into the U.S. illegally when he was a toddler, just like all of the DREAMers the open-borders propagandists are always extolling in sweeping terms. One day after he was released from jail for serving time for assault with a deadly weapon, this known illegal alien gang-banger was back on the streets. The feds failed to deport him. Local authorities failed to detain him. Espinoza celebrated his freedom by shooting star student athlete Jamiel execution-style in the head for carrying a red Spider-Man backpack, which the Latino 18th Street Gang thug mistook for gang colors. Jamiel’s mother, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw, had to travel home from serving in Iraq on her second tour of duty to join her family in burying her son. Illegal alien teen killer Espinoza was sentenced to death last fall. Grieving parents Anita and Jamiel Sr. and their loved ones have valiantly kept Jamiel’s memory alive by supporting efforts to repeal dangerous illegal alien sanctuary See malkin on 40

Lone Ranger Riding High in France PARIS—The

Lone Ranger has galloped down the Champs d’ Elysees on his trusty horse Silver. The little blue by John J. Metzler Smurfs are at Syndicated Columnist the palatial Opera Garnier. As has long been the case in recent memory, the French remain enchanted and enthralled with American movies ranging from Wolverine, Pacific Rim and World War Z. Walk round Paris or see movie ads on the Metro or the grand cinemas of Montparnasse and it’s abundantly clear that Hollywood continues to capture the imagination and the box office receipts of French movie goers. Look at the cinema selections over the past few weeks of August and Viola, each of the top ten films playing throughout La Belle France is from the USA. Now You See Me, The Lone Ranger, the Smurfs and Despicable Me-2 are among the highest box office hits. Others include American Nightmare, Monsters University and RIPD. And some people claim that the French don’t like Americans? Well when it comes to popular culture be it at the cinema, the television or the radio, movies, it’s the shows and songs from the USA dominating the French airwaves. This is hardly a new phenomenon but a reality from more than a generation. It’s not that France does not have a vibrant and creative film industry, far from it, but at the end of the day, most people are attracted by the high budget, high tech and high action American thrillers which simply don’t get produced by many of the creative and artsy production houses. And even with the high state financial subsidies the French government doles out to domestic movie producers, (Spain does this too), when it comes to crowd appeal, the U.S. wins nearly hands down. Over the past year, Holly-

wood has held the high ground among the French cinema audiences. Of the top ten box office hits through France, eight were from the United States. Skyfall, the latest James Bond thriller was overwhelmingly the favorite. New selections being released as the Summer vacation season winds down, are Kick-ass 2, Jobs and The Conjuring. So what is the real appeal of films or for that matter popular culture Made in the USA? This is certainly not for a lack of French films, literature and music. Quite the contrary, the tradition here is long and rich. Moreover the French publishing industry is very vital, varied and strong. It’s no longer the appeal either of American movies or TV series, or music being new or novel; here too, this has been the case for more than a generation. In fact much of the local pop music seems to be a copycat of American Rock, Hip Hop or Rap but in the French language and clearly with distinctly local urban roots. Indeed the popularity of American movies is hardly unique to France but reflects a global phenomenon. What is ironic is that for a country which pouts at globalization, the very same people then eagerly consume its popular cultural fruits. Maybe this is seen as an antidote and escapism from to France’s economic doldrums? Lacking any logical explanation and seeing the box office bottom line, it remains a nagging question why the French so favor the American movies. One woman explained it simply but philosophically; “these movies portray a vision of America,” even if flawed and stereotypical but still a view that fits comfortably into a mindset. These movies are popular in France and elsewhere because they are governed by the sovereignty of the free market, the unvarnished appeal to what people want, seek and are looking for even if it is hopefully not American Nightmare. Hooray for Hollywood?

John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Transatlantic

Divide USA/Euroland Rift? (University Press, 2010).

Reality Versus Mirages in Egypt Nothing symbolizes the Utopianism of our times like both liberals and some conservatives calling for us to cut off aid to the Egyptian military, beby Thomas Sowell cause of the Syndicated Columnist widespread killings in what is becoming a civil war in Egypt. Such utter lack of realism from the left is not new, but hearing some conservatives saying the same things takes some getting used to. President Obama’s call for the Egyptians to end the violence and form an “inclusive” government, with all factions represented, may sound good to many Americans. But there is not a snowball’s chance in hell that it will happen. Egypt existed for thousands of years before there was a United States of America. In all those millennia, Egypt has never had a free or democratic society. Nor is Egypt unique in that. Of all the different nations that

have existed at various times and places throughout recorded history, it is doubtful that even ten percent were free or democratic. Even free and democratic nations existing today took centuries to achieve freedom and democracy. Barack Obama may have enough ego to imagine that he could accomplish, during his White House years, what took centuries to accomplish elsewhere. But do others, including some conservatives, need to share that delusion? Yet Obama is only the latest in a long line of American officials, including Presidents, who have thought that a universal human desire for freedom meant that freedom and democracy could be exported, even to countries where they have never existed before. However widespread the desire to be free, that is wholly different from a desire to live in a society where others are free. Nowhere is such tolerance harder to find than in the Middle East. Has no one noticed the on-going lethal violence between different sects of Muslims in the Middle East, or their intolerance toward See Sowell on 40

5-2-1-0! It’s Back to School We Go!

Starting a new school year marks the end of summer and means a change in schedule for thousands of families across the Lakes and Three Rivers regions. Typically it means a change in eating habits, activity levels, computer and screen time, and sleep patterns. As your child goes back to school this fall, try to remember the 5-2-1-0 message as a way to keep healthy and active!

FIVE

fruits and/or vegetables are recommended as a minimum for children each and every day. Try to mix them up with different colors to vary the nutrients that their bodies are getting. There are lots of easy ways to integrate fun fruits and veggies into the day such as adding a banana or berries to whole grain cereal or packing baby carrots and fat free ranch dip in the lunch box. If your child is refusing

to eat certain fruits and veggies, don’t give up hope. The more they see, smell, and taste that food the higher the chances that they’ll accept it into their choices. Modeling healthy eating is always a good idea. They are watching you!

TWO

hours of screen time is the most that a child should be exposed to during the day and evening hours. Too much sedentary screen time can lead to higher chances of obesity and diseases like diabetes later in life. Turn off the “tube” and get moving!

ONE

full hour of physical activity for children each day. This is activity that raises the heart rate and moves the major muscle groups of the body such as biking, swimming, running, or playing an active sport like basketball or soccer. If your child isn’t into sports, that’s okay too. Make time for a family

walk or bike ride a few nights a week or expose them to dance or martial arts activities.

ZERO

stands for the number of sugary drinks kids need in their diet. That’s right…None! Sugar sweetened drinks provide excess calories often without any nutritional value. Try eating whole fruit instead of drinking fruit juice and water instead of sugary sports drinks. Stay away from those fast food smoothies and slushies. They are expensive and extremely high in unnecessary calories! LRGHealthcare wants you to start the school year off on the right foot! Many community resources are available to help you make healthy lifestyle choices and can be accessed by calling 527-7120 or visiting www.lrgh.org

The revolution in joint replacement is here. Shouldnʼt you be? There’s a new approach happening in hip and knee replacement. One that promises a faster recovery, longer lasting mobility and a shorter hospital stay compared to traditional joint replacement. Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Currently in the state legislature there is a bill being discussed, HB 660, which would require that food products containing genetically engineered material to have labeling. Food that has been genetically altered can also be referred to as GMOs (genetically modified organism). Basically, these products have had their genetics changed with DNA from viruses, bacteria, plants, or animals. These products are created with goals such as higher yield crops or pest/pesticide resistance. Opponents claim that these goals have not been achieved. The most common products to receive genetic modification are soy and corn, both of which are turned into different products and fillers and then jammed into lots of other products. The big question for your health is this: are GMOs safe to consume? The short answer is that we don’t know. Obviously, biotech companies claim that they are fine. Yet, there are independent studies that say otherwise. The fact, remains that we don’t know the long term effects. My opinion, at least, is to exercise extreme caution when we don’t know the safety of something and going further I always have great concerns when we start slicing stuff open and altering DNA. When we play God and think that our innovations can out perform nature, I think that we must do so humbly. If the safety of GMOs is not completely clear, why

are they legal or at the very least not labeled? It’s a good question. From nongmoproject.org “Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs.” In fact, in May of 2013, Japan rejected wheat shipped from the US when it was discovered that the wheat had been contaminated with GMO wheat. Is the rest of the world being insane or are there other reasons that we aren’t afforded the same protections as people in Peru, which has seen a 10 year ban placed on GMO containing food. I want to know why the labeling of these products isn’t already happening or worse, why the labeling is facing trouble in some states. The labeling of GMOs has already failed in California, but has passed in Maine and Connecticut, with contingency triggers that still have to be fulfilled. I suspect it is mostly a business decision. I attended a part of a state legislature subcommittee discussing HB 660 and many of the concerns seemed to be linked to cost of implementation and being sued by biotech giants such as Monsanto, more than safety. To me, in the case of labeling, safety is essentially irrelevant. If the product is safe, then big companies should have no issue labeling it. If the product is potentially unsafe, then they should have to label it. More information should be included either way. This is the right of the American citizen. We, as consumers, should have the information about what we buy so that we can make informed decisions. If you hate GMOs

then you can skip them. Don’t care about GMOs, then ignore the label and feed them to your family. The point being, free people get to make choices, but we have to have the option and the info. Right now, unlike many other countries around the world, we don’t have that same chance. People who know more than me on this topic have even sharper statements to make: “Famed Canadian geneticist David Suzuki answers, “The experiments simply haven’t been done and we now have become the guinea pigs.” He adds, “Anyone that says, ‘Oh, we know that this is perfectly safe,’ I say is either unbelievably stupid or deliberately lying.” and world renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava goes one step further. After reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, he concludes that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans.” (dailypaul.com submitted 5/29/13). I actually think Maine Rep. Lance Harvell, the man behind Maine’s labeling bill, said it best, while being interviewed by the NH subcommittee on HB 660: “if you want to make the American people potentially a lab experiment, at least let them know what’s going on”.

Together, they traveled the length and breadth of the Lakes Region doing home births in all kinds of weather, dropping everything when the call came. Sherry began her journey by having Molly catch three of her four babies. She immediately knew she wanted to be involved in the Home Birth Movement. Sherry did her training at Holistic Training Program in Barrington, Rhode Island, attended workshops and classes spon-

sored by Midwives Alliance of North America and NH Midwives Association prior to taking the National Certification exam and became a nationally Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and took the NH exam becoming a NH Certified Midwife (NHCM). Sherry has held every office in the state organization, and chaired many regional conferences. She co-taught childbirth classes with Molly for many years and continues to teach today. The babies whose birth she attended twenty –five years ago are now young adults. She is looking forward to catching their babies during her next twenty-five years!

Back to School FYI for Parents Contributed By Franklin Mayor’s Drug Task Force Already millions of youth have headed back to school, carrying with them their parents’ hopes and expectations of a successful academic year. Each new school year brings new challenges, new friends, new social situations, and new risks to teens’ success and well-

being. And that includes alcohol and both illegal and legal drugs. Drug use among teens puts them at risk for school failure as well as for an array of other health, social, and legal consequences. In any given day more than 4,000 teens will use an illegal drug for the first

time, nearly that many will smoke a cigarette for the first time, more than 7,500 will drink alcohol for the first time, and nearly 2,500 will use a prescription pain reliever for the first time without a doctor’s prescription. And in recent years, girls have caught up with boys in their drug use, and actually exceed their male peers in use of prescription drugs without a prescription. A special concern is that teens’ perception of the harm of drug use, especially marijuana, is softening, which generally predicts higher drug use rates in the future. Students with higher grades are significantly less likely to have engaged in behaviors such as using marijuana, drinking alcohol, or taking prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription,

but still, the numbers are staggering. Summer is the peak time of year for first use of drugs, when most students are away from school. So many students will be returning to class with more drug experience, either directly or indirectly, through friends’ use. Parents, teachers, and other school officials should be mindful of this as teens return to school grounds and classrooms in the weeks ahead. Teens begin to use drugs for many reasons - including to “fit in to new social situations, such as the school setting. Many teens overestimate the proportion of their peers who use drugs, thus leading them to the mistaken idea that they really need to use to become socially acceptable. Other reasons that teens use include ex-

perimentation, to become “more adult, and for selfmedication, to cope with stress and trauma. Many parents believe they are powerless to influence their teens, yet research reveals that parents remain the single most powerful influence in their lives. Further, quality drug education in schools and well-designed after-school activities can reduce the risk that teens will get into drugs. Yet parents remain the first line of defense. Parents should know the warning signs of possible drug use, which include skipping classes or not doing well in school, significant mood changes, loss of interest in personal appearance, a change in friends, heightened secrecy about actions or possessions, or lack of interest in activities. Parents and other caring adults can learn more about the risks of specific drugs, and what to do to reduce the chances their teen will become involved with drugs or alcohol, by clicking on the link to the Drug Task Force at www. franklinnh.org.

Barack To Amoeba GOP; Don’t Listen to the People What a time to be alive. For talk show hosts and columnists there is so much material one has to have by Niel Young Advocates Columnist a feel for what the listeners and readers want for information to stimulate the mind. Dealing with what has happened in the past 5 years has worn down many of us to the point of asking; do we make a difference? If we are not on the radio, writing letters to the editor, speaking out against the Obama Plan for killing America, who is going to do it? Our representatives in Concord and Washington just will not listen, and they want our votes in 2014? Not mine. ******** Chris Cuomo (CNN):“How much of the lack of action in Washington do you put on yourself in terms of blame? Barack Hussein Obama: “Ultimately the buck stops with me, I get frustrated, and I’ve said before and I continue to say I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get Congress — and Republicans in Congress in particular — to think less about politics and party and think more about what’s good for the country. I’ve made this argument to my Republican friends privately, and, by the way, sometimes they say to me privately, ‘I agree with you, but I’m worried about a primary from, you know, somebody in the tea party back in my district’ or, ‘I’m worried about what Rush Limbaugh is going to say about me. What is this community organizer stating? He insults us. He has a plan for Socialism, taking our guns away, taking our freedom of speech away, and a redistribution of wealth to those

who have done anything meaningful to increase their ability to be part of the middle class. Obama wants us to take care of those who sit on their bleep, light up a Camel, and know they have made it to the “Promised Land though it be on another’s labor. Barack, are you suggesting to REPUBLICANS THAT THEY STAB THE FOLKS BACK HOME IN THE BACK by disregarding statements and promises during the election? Did you hear that Kelly Ayotte? I know; too late, you already did it! ******** What is the cause of so much Black on White Violence recently? It is heartbreaking to know we Americans have come so far with regard to race relations. Today, in my opinion it is what is in your heart and head, not the color of your skin. Why was George Zimmerman following Trayvon Martin? Zimmerman is a small man who had his suspicions about Martin. Did Zimmerman shoot Martin before Martin was banging Zimmerman’s head on the curbing? So sad that this happened. Not to worry, Obama, Sharpton and Jackson were there to kick off the 2013 race war! Does having your baby shot in the face and killed by a black man or any man acceptable? ******** FON: The Leaders ‘Down Under’ want to use the death of Chris Lane an Australian student and say America has such a gun problem that Australia wants to boycott our tourism. There is an election in Australia and their liberals are taking advantage of this issue. “ Last night on Fox the Democrat was saying America has a gun problem and I felt like saying : no America has a ghetto problem . African Americans have accepted that their men

do not have to be there for their children or provide. Government is not your daddy ! Even though they provide them with food , housing, cell phones and contraceptives? Also integrating minority kids to our public schools has been proof that equal opportunity does not create equal outcome. NEW LISTENERS: “You are absolutely right about the liberals making everything a race card! My grandchildren are half black. I want to know why Obama NEVER acknowledges his White heritage? We make sure our grandchildren know both sides of their heritage. Now tell me he isn’t creating racism in this country? Or at least making way too much of the race card. So sick of the hypocrisy in this country! ******** KXLY.com SPOKANE, Wash. – “WWII veteran Delbert “Shorty Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten and left for dead by two teens at the Eagles Lodge in Spokane on Wednesday evening. At this writing the report was two Black American young men (16 years old) were in custody. They beat this great man to death. What should happen to them? DAUGHTER: “If I had a grandfather this is what he would look like.... But I don’t because he left this world (12/25/44) much too young fighting for the freedoms that these punks have today. Obama thinks he has created world peace with his Trayvon Tour but he has stirred up racial tensions more than in 1965. “This honored veteran, Mr. Belton, survives a horrific war and his long life is ended because of these thugs. And no, I did not hear anything about this until you sent the email. It’s a disgrace.

monstrosities, you will find they will all begin with a BIG, FAT, “Money Carrot. With Obamacare, the Federal Government will supposedly pay for the first years of a state’s implementation of ACA. (There must be one magical money tree in Washington. Oh, no – I forgot. The money they play with is OUR TAX DOLLARS. Not “free money at all.) Granite State Future receives much of their money from Federal grants and entities. And Common Core came into play with “Race to the Top funds

Now labor unions and other former Obamacare supporters don’t want it. IRS employees enforcing Obamacare don’t want it. Congress and their staffs don’t want it although the law specified that they were to feel its impact like other citizens. Fearing the consequences of Congressional pain, the administration exempted them. We, however, are not exempt.

It is time to end this national nightmare. Sign the petition at dontfundit2013.com. Demand that your Congressman, Senators, and Congressional Leaders defund and repeal Obamacare. Your prosperity, longevity, and quality of life may depend on it.

which lured cash hungry schools by promising 4.3 billion dollars for schools who applied for the federal grants. In each case, the Feds initiated these programs with the lie of “free money. They have also tried to sell us that these initiatives were “locally based (not federal programs) and were going to deliver FABULOUS results to our communities. Can you say PROPOGANDA? The truth is Obamacare, if it is fully implemented, will lead to the bankrupting of our health care system and ultimately, to a single payer system. (If

you think this is a good thing, you need to experience what health care is like in Europe. Having lived there, I can tell you single payer is NOT a good thing!) The NATIONALIZATION of our healthcare gives our government unlimited power in our personal lives. Granite State Future’s end game is to allow Federal Agencies to have direct input into community infrastructure planning with “mandatory outcomes, bypassing the voter, and incorporating those plans into state policies. THIS RELATIONSHIP CLEARLY VIOLATES STATE SOVEREIGNTY. Make no mistake, private property rights have no place in GSF’s game. Common Core seeks to violate, not one, not two, but THREE federal statues to garner a nationalized curriculum through mandatory assessment. Common Core VIOLATES the General Education Provisions Act; the Department of Education Organization Act; and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. There has never been a more important time for states to retain their SOVEREIGNTY. How else can people stand against this rising tide of Federal Progressivism? Sound the alarm. Get ready to be heard. 2014 is fast approaching and we need CONSERVATIVE, SMALL GOVERNMENT solutions to the problems we face. Remember, bloated government serves nothing but itself. Over 35 years of Beautification Complete Landscaping & Masonry

Taking A Break

by Pete Grasso Contributing Writer

I guess that was sine “Heat: wave we had a couple of weeks ago. It pushed the lake temperature up a bit over the 80 degree mark. I’m not really sure what that does to the “Warm water fishing (bass, perch, etc), but it does raise havoc with the cold water fishery. Using downriggers to get to the cold water was the best bet. Lead line will also achieve results, but less efficient than the downriggers. In any case, this substantially increases the mortality rate of any cold water fish being caught. Bringing them up from mid 50 degree water into 80 degree water is quite a shock to their system. If they are to be released, their recover rate is severely compromised. Combine this with the fact that July is the month that we usually hook up with quite a few “Smaller fish and now we have a problem. As I have mentioned earlier, I like to use barbless hooks in order that fish could be released if they are not wanted and NOT hook damaged (ALL legal hook damaged fish are kept as part of the daily bag limit). However, when using downriggers and “Hard bait, we have to contend with the treble hooks, which can severely damage a fish. Yikes! During this hot weather I limited the number of charters taken out, for all of the reasons above. As July ended, the weather had changed

and the water was cooling off a bit. By the time early to mid-August arrived, conditions improved. Not only will it be a bit easier to release fish, but we will be into the bigger fish, decreasing the incidents of a release situation. When we get into September, EVERYTHING should change. Cooler water and bigger fish will be the norm. September, more often than not, gives up some of the best fishing (cold water) of the year and I really don’t think that this year will be an exception. By then we will be back on the leadcore, flies and “Jig boxes. Charters start a bit later (6:00 AM) and the success ratio dramatically increases. This really is a wonderful time of the year to fish. Boat traffic has diminished, the mornings are cool and crisp. The only real downside could be the morning fog (“Sea smoke. With cool nights and warm water, this is the perfect combination for this situation. Don’t try to be a hero here, let the fog burn off a bit before hitting the water. If you don’t know what you are doing you can get into a lot of trouble in this situation. We already have quite a number of charters booked for September, but still have some open days to fill. If you have never experienced “Fall salmon fishing, now’s your chance! To book a charter you can reach us on the land line @ 603366-4115 or via e-mail: drhook1@myfairpoint. net We’d love to have you aboard! On another note, final relief from the hot weather provided the opportunity to head for “Camp for a couple of

days. Not much in mind other than a small bit of routine chores. Bring up a load of wood for winter, spray a bit of waterproofing in the decks, cut the grass, pick up the yard and enjoy a good book. As I’m writing this article it’s a beautiful day, the lake is flat calm and the temperature is about 54 degrees. Not a soul around! I have not seen a boat on the lake at all! It would have been a great morning to try for a couple of nice brown trout, but I’m a bit behind in my articles, so, here I am shackled to the computer. I have no complaints as with no distractions, I can get a lot done. With all the rain, the lake is full and this would have been a great time to bring the “Dr. Hook up here for a bit of fishing. Usually, the lake is down quite a bit and the two boat launches leave quite a bit to be desired for one launching a 24’ boat. Furthermore, “Docks are not allowed on the See grasso on 25

lake and this means putting in & taking out on a daily basis. That’s just a bit more than I want to attempt alone. Therefore, I’ll stick with my little 12’ aluminum boat and have just as much fun with none of the work involved. If I apply myself and complete my articles, perhaps I’ll reward myself with dinner at the Rainbow Grille on Back Lake. If you have never eaten there, you are really missing the boat. They have some of the finest food north of Boston and the ambiance is out of this world. I expect that Mike will drop by the camp later today and I don’t believe it will take much arm twisting to get him to join me. Later‌‌Capt. Pete

Blazing Star Grange #71 in Danbury will host its 99th annual Grange and Community Fair on Saturday, September 7th Start off your day at 7:30AM with a delicious pancake breakfast, served at the Danbury Elementary School hosted by the PTO. Be sure to see the raised bed gardens produced by the students before you leave! This project was done in conjunction with the Grange’s Living Sustainably program “Sustainable Danbury is the theme of this year’s parade that will begin at 11am at Restful Road on route 104, ending at the Grange Hall on North Road. Parade line up will begin at 10 a.m. and judging of entrants will take place before the parade commences. Move on to the Fire Station at 9:30AM for a presentation on “putting up and preserving all the great food your gardens have produced this summer. After the parade the Lyme Town Band will perform in front of the Grange Hall.

Winners of last year’s bed races at the Danbury Grange Community Fair. The ever-popular bed races will be held at 12:30. Teams are formed on the spot. The competition is keen as contestants push the old metal bed from the firehouse to the Creamery just beyond the Hall Other highlights include the horseshoe competition at Independence Park, a Baby Show at 1 p.m., Dutch Auction at 1:30 p.m., and to cap off the day an all-you-can-eat Ham and Bean Supper, 4:30 at the Grange Hall.

Fresh salads and desserts are featured for only $9.00, children under 12 are $4.00, and children under 3 are free. At 7 p.m., Cardigan Mt. Tradition will play blue grass music until the Live Auction begins at 8:30. The fair will be held rain or shine. Anyone wishing to exhibit crafts or other wares and displays should call Diane Clay at 603-493-3650 to reserve a space.

in developing the sauce recipes. To bring the sauces to a wider audience, MacDaddy’s teamed up with Meredith artist Kelly Bennett-Huckins and the Neighbor Made Kitchen in Keene. Kelly Bennett-Huckins created Swineheart - the engaging warrior pig in a kilt – that is both the BBQ team mascot and namesake of the line and is featured on each label. MacDaddy’s combined the image of Swineheart with the resources at the Neighbor Made Kitchen to bring you the family recipes that have been enjoyed by MacDaddy’s catering customers for years. By joining other local food businesses at Neighbor Made Kitchen, MacDaddy’s adds to the economy of scale for purchasing higher quality ingredients at lower cost, which then translates directly into an affordable, locally made and artisanal-quality product. Combining a sense of humor with good taste, MacDaddy’s offers Kilt It!, Sweet Caroline and Bang See bbq on 29

Zoom! sauces. Kilt It! is a well-balanced honeybased BBQ sauce recipe that offers just the right balance of sweet and savory. Sweet Caroline is a sweet and tangy tribute to Carolina-style BBQ sauce, its vinegar base and rich flavor make it an excellent marinade as well as a sauce. Last, but definitely not least, Bang Zoom! is a crowd favorite – this sweet and peppery sauce builds to a mid-range heat with a flavorful finish. Swineheart’s Signature Sauces have been met with enthusiasm by new customers. One local mother sent a note saying, “Kilt It has replaced my kids’ favorite dipping sauce for chicken nuggets and another local family declared it to be “the best BBQ sauce we’ve ever tried. You can find Swineheart’s Signature Sauces in stores across the Lakes Region, including the Meredith Center

Store, So Little Thyme and Divine Inspirations in Meredith; Zeb’s General Store in North Conway Village; Chase Street Market in Plymouth, E.M. Heath Supermarket in Center Harbor; The Old Country Store and Museum in Moultonborough; and Bristol Shop N Save in Bristol. MacDaddy’s strives to support the local communities as well. So far this year, MacDaddy’s provided BBQ for the Tilton Northfield Little League’s first annual auction, participated at the Baker

River Arts and Music Festival in Rumney, and sponsored the Bow Junction blue grass concert in the Belknap Mill Summer Concert Series in Laconia. MacDaddy’s will be at the Wright Museum for their first antique car cruise in Wolfeboro, NH on August 24 from 10-2. What a great way to try Swineheart’s Signature Sauces with MacDaddy’s original BBQ. Swineheart’s Signature Sauces are recommended when taste matters, and taste ALWAYS matters!

boat. To view the boats which are giving charity rides, visit the Regatta section of the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org. Those attending the Regatta will also be given the opportunity to view the crew staging area also known as the Hot Pits. This secured area will be open to the public only between heats, but will allow spectators the opportunity to meet drivers and crew and see the boats up close. Evening receptions and dinners with the drivers and crews are open to the public. The events include a Thursday, September 12 cook-out at the Wolfetrap Grill and Raw Bar; a Friday, September 13 reception at the New Hampshire Boat Museum; and a Saturday, September 14 Awards Banquet at the Wolfeboro Inn. Those wishing to sign up for any of these evening events may do so on the Regatta section of the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org or by calling 569-4554. This well-planned event requires much coordination and collaboration with the American Power Boat Association, State of New Hampshire Marine Patrol, Town of Wolfeboro and the support of the community.

Over 100 volunteers fill many stations including registration, hot pits, parking, set-up and clean-up to name a few. For further

make a nice outing with big views for a modest effort. The best big mountain vistas of the day, from the Moriahs to Madison were our reward. We returned to North Road via the lower section of the Gates Brook Trail and then we had a good mile of road walking to get back to our car. As soon as our boots hit the pavement, boom! The sky opened up and it rained as hard as it could. No biggy, we knew we didn’t have to sleep in a tent and we could get ice cream in Gorham on the way home. Have Fun! DEAR TIM: I’m lucky and have lots of medium to larger rock on my lot that can be easily harvested. I want to build a stackable rock retaining wall that will be about 3 feet tall and hold back that amount of dirt. Is there magic involved in this process, or do you just stack the rock and hope for the best? What would cause the wall to fail? I don’t want to have to redo the job in a few years. I’ve seen photos of stone walls in New England farm fields and woods that seem to have withstood centuries of Mother Nature’s weather and abuse. --McKayla S., Pittsburgh DEAR MCKAYLA: Believe it or not, there’s not too much magic involved in building a stacked rock retaining wall that will last generations. It does help if you paid attention in your high school physics class; if not, I’ll provide the crash course below. First, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same type of wall. You mentioned the photos of the rock walls you’ve seen. I live in New Hampshire and am surrounded by these walls. In fact, I own a piece of property that has stone walls on it that are probably 170 years old. Many of these walls are in excellent shape. However, the stacked rock walls on my land are not retaining walls. They were primarily built as pasture borders when New Hampshire had millions and millions of grazing sheep. The wool from these domesticated animals satisfied the enormous rawmaterial appetite of the

These rock walls are not retaining walls. They’re just free-standing walls that used to be in the middle of fields that acted as crude but effective fences. They had no dirt pushing against one side of the wall. The rock walls you see in the photos still look good because gravity is

just pulling them straight down. Retaining walls have an added sideways thrust component in addition to the downward pull of gravity. In cold climates, this thrust is multiplied as the soil freezes behind the wall and expands sideways as well as up. Dave Lawton and Eva Ashton, Dana’s daughter. Lawton’s father, Bob Lawton, is the owner of the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in the Weirs. “There have been many pinballs that have come and gone at Funspot over the past sixty years it has been in business,” said Lawton. “This one, which used to operate at Funspot, has been in our basement longer than I can remember.” When Dana decided to take the “Swing-Along” pinball home, he knew he had a challenge in front of him. It seems the machine had been a home for a family of mice for one can only guess how long. Undeterred, he was excited for the challenge. “It had been awhile since I had worked on a real mechanical machine like this,” said Ashton. “For years the family had spent time at the Ames Brook Campground in See ashton on 42

Christians and murderous hatred of Jews? Muslims in some other parts of the world have been more tolerant, and there have been five female heads of state in Muslim countries. But not in the Middle East. Much is made of the fact that the United States gives financial support to the Egyptian military that is shooting down hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of Egyptians in the streets. But we have to make our choices among the options actually available. With the Muslim Brotherhood mounting armed attacks, what can anyone rationally expect, except shooting on both sides? It would certainly be a lot nicer if everyone laid down their guns, and just sat down together and worked things out peacefully. But has anyone forgotten that, for centuries, Protestants and Catholics slaughtered each other and tried to wipe each other out? Only after the impossibility of achieving that goal became clear did they finally give it up and decide to live and let live.

As regards Egypt, it is not at all clear that any regime that has existed after Mubarak, or that is currently on the horizon, is better than Mubarak was. But the very idea of leaving well enough alone is foreign to those who are looking for moral melodramas and soaring rhetoric, such as talk about “the Arab spring. What did we get for our money in Egypt under Mubarak? We got peace in a part of the world where peace cannot be taken for granted -- and a part of the world from which oil provides the economic lifeblood of Western civilization. But we could not leave well enough alone. Now we are paying the price -- and perhaps it is only the first installment of the price. The idea that, when a government we find unsatisfactory is overthrown, we can expect a better government to follow, goes back at least as far as President Woodrow Wilson. His intervention in the First World War -- a war “to make the world safe for democracy -- turned out to be a war

whose actual end results replaced old monarchies with new, and far worse, totalitarian governments. Barack Obama’s Middle East interventions have replaced stable and neutral despots in Egypt and Libya with anti-Western despots and chaos. Such is the price of pursuing ideological mirages. After contributing to the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power, and the disastrous aftermath of that, the Obama administration is now publicly lecturing Egyptian leaders, and trying to micro-manage them from thousands of miles away. And some conservatives are joining the Quixotic chorus, playing with fire. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. laws, spotlighting lapses in detention and deportation policy, calling attention to violent illegal alien gangs targeting blacks in L.A, and opposing reckless bipartisan amnesty proposals. As Mr. Shaw told Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle: “Just because you were brought here under no fault of your own doesn’t mean you give amnesty to everybody. Amen. And instead of phony promises of enforcement later for blanket amnesty now, we need immediate reform of our bloodstained, loophole-ridden, underfunded and systemically sabotaged criminal alien detention and deportation system. Pronto. Jamiel Shaw’s family members are vigilant community organizers against illegal immigration. But their activism will never be hailed by Hollywood, The New York Times op-ed page, the White House or the RNC’s elitist open-borders outreach panderers. I also believe it’s no coincidence that the RNC is now publicly marginalizing those who dare to challenge the rose-colored DREAMer propaganda of McCainGraham-Rubio-Ryan-Mark Zuckerberg-La Raza -- just as the forces of Amnesty Incorporated conspire behind closed doors. Question: Why won’t Priebus acknowledge the horrific suffering of the Shaws and countless other families who have been harmed by illegal alien nightmares? The political timing is inconveeeenient. Ashland and I used to tinker with some of the pinball machines they had their at the time.” The thought of taking home the “Swing-Along” pinball came on the heels of another pinball machine “Laser Wars” which Dana had just recently brought back to life and gave to his son, Dana, Jr., who lives in New York. That pinball, made in 1987, also used to sit on the floor of Funspot. “Laser Wars was fun to do,” said Dana. “Still, being a newer pinball, it wasn’t as mechanical as ‘Swing-Along’ so it was different.” As pinballs progressed they developed more into containing circuit boards and electronics and moved away from the original, sometimes very creative, mechanical operations that pro-

gressed the game. Once Dana got “SwingAlong” home he got to work. “Most of the work in getting it operational again came with cleaning up the relays and connectors,” said Dana. “Then we tackled the restoration of the playing field.” Along with his wife, Marge, the two ended up applying four coats of Polyurethaneto the playfield making sure that the newly, reinvigorated, pinball would now see a new, long life. “I probably spent about an hour or so a day for about a month until I got the machine into good working condition,” said Dana. “I did find schematic online I ordered to help figure out how to fix a few things. Its working well but there are still a few glitches I’m trying to work out.” Still to come is a new version of the machine head, where the graphics, scores, etc are displayed. “That really developed a lot of fading over the years,” said Dana. “Someone is working on a new, cleaner version See ASHTON on 43

using Photoshop and other computer tricks.” Now that Dana has almost finished his work on “Swing-Along” he certainly doesn’t; find himself at a loss for things to keep him occupied. Since 1995, he has been a Ham Radio operator and also a member of The Lakes Region Amateur Radio Club. He has also taken on a part-time position at Funspot helping to keep the many classic pinball machines in the American Classic Arcade Museum working for new generations of pinball enthusiasts.

the stones and the friction between them are greater than the sideways thrusting force that’s constantly trying to tear down the wall. That’s pretty much

all the magic you need to know, unless you have great skills and can levitate the heavy stones into position! The first thing, in my opinion, that you need to know is that weight is everything. Heavier stones, ones that weigh in excess of 150 pounds or more, are highly recommended. Just as it takes great effort for you to move these small boulders, it will take more effort for Mother Nature to do it too. You say the wall will only be 3-feet tall, but is this wall cut into a hillside where the ground slopes up and away from the wall? If so, there’s a tremendous

amount of weight and soil upslope that’s working to push over your wall. A 3-foot-high retaining wall that has just level land at the top doesn’t push that hard against the retaining wall. However, if the small retaining wall is immediately adjacent to a parking area where heavy trucks can load the soil just behind the wall, this added weight can cause a poorly designed wall to collapse, even a short wall just 3 feet tall. I recommend that you dig a 6-inch deep trench that the first row or rocks rests in. This small keyway helps hold them in place. Deeper is better, but you don’t gain much if you bury more than one third of the height of the first row of rock. If possible you want to have a slight backwards lean to the wall. You want the face of the wall to be out of plumb with a slight tilt back towards the dirt that’s being retained. Four inches of backwards tilt in three feet of height is plenty. Do your best to tightly interlock the rock. Jagged or misshapen rocks work much better than rounded river rocks that are nothing more than giant balls. The more surface area of each rock that touches www.NHWOOD.com

NH’s Oldest Candy and Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Shoppe

adjacent rock, the better. This friction allows the stones to work together instead of each rock just counting on its own weight to hold back the soil. If the soil at the top of the wall is level, you can gradually decrease the size of the stones or rocks as you get to the top of the wall. Try not to use rocks that weigh less than 25 pounds each unless they’re used to fill voids in the back of the wall. Stand back and view the wall as you build it. Look to make sure you like the look of it and look down the wall to make sure it’s running in a somewhat straight line. You can use a string to help you keep it straight, but often stacked walls look best if they have a little wiggle or two in them. It creates the illusion that the wall has been there waging a battle against Mother Nature for some time and it’s a tie! Want free home-improvement information?
