Making Strides, Now A Huge Nationwide Fundraiser, Started Here in New Hampshire by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Close to 200,000 cases of Breast Cancer appear in the United States every year, hundreds here in New Hampshire alone. Too many individual stories to tell here but many are similar as that initial diagnosis can change from fear to hope through understanding and support by other Breast Cancer survivors and the local

community. Beth Silvestri’s story is a great example. It was on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2011, when Beth Slivestri got the news. “I was driving home about six o’clock at night when my phone rang,” recalled Beth. It was her doctor calling See strides on 12

In 1993 5,000 walkers took to the street in both Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston, Mass, to participate in the first ever “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk. The combined effort raised $660,000 towards research.

This October marks the twentieth year of “Making Strides” and it has spread from the Northeast to around the country where 270 events are held each year with 8,000,000 walkers raising about $460 million. This year, eight Making Strides events are scheduled in New Hampshire on October 14th and 21st.

T

The Making Strides Walks For Breast Cancer Program began in New Hampshire in 1993 when it was first held in Manchester (also in Boston) when five thousand walkers raised $660,000 for Breast Cancer research. Today there are 270 events throughout courtesy Photo the country raising over $400 million a year.

Dover’s Annual Apple Harvest Day, now in its 28th year happens on Saturday, October 6th from 9am to 4pm. In past years over 20,000 people have attended Apple Harvest Day and another big crowd is expected this year. The event begins in the morning with a 5K Road Race at 8:30am. The course goes through downtown Dover. Beginning and advanced runners and walkers are welcome. The first 250 to sign up will get an Apple Harvest T-shirt so you should register early. The large Apple Harvest Food Court will be set up at Henry Law Park. A great time is guaranteed to all. For more info call the Dover Chamber at 603-742-2218 or visit www.dovernh.org.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Seasonal Disorder

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I want to spend my time this week talking about a serious issue here in New Hampshire. It’s a seasonal disorder that affects a population of New Hampshire that is larger than you might imagine. I know, because I am one. Not many of us talk about it, we walk silently as it envelops us from early September to usually around late December. Strangely enough, if it goes into January we feel much better but even then that sudden high never lasts long enough. Of course I am talking about the pain of being a New York Jets fan here in New England Patriots country. I was born and raised on Long Island, New York. In 1969, I was fourteen years old. (Okay, I will give you curious folks a few seconds to count the years and figure out my age.) This was the year of Joe Namath and Super Bowl III. Even though my dad was a diehard New York Giants fan, I attached myself to the Jets. Now, forty-three years later (another clue) I am, like so many others, waiting for that return trip to the big game. I moved to New Hampshire in 1985 and didn’t realize the silent agony it would cost me. All started out very well for me. You see, I am also a fan of the Mets, as opposed to the Yankees. Be-

ing a Yankee fan is, in New Hampshire, almost as bad as being in Al Qaeda. I was a Mets fan and considered harmless. But then came 1986 when Bob Stanley cost the Red Sox the World Series against the Mets by throwing a passed ball. (Stanley was later saved from disgrace by Bill Buckner.) Suddenly, being a Mets fan was now a dangerous thing. We were hated almost as much as Yankees fans, but not quite. Years passed and there wasn’t much left to cheer for from my end. The Mets and the Jets both languished after that, as did the Red Sox and Patriots. The best I could do was silently, and half-heartedly, root for the Yankees sitting by myself in front of the television. It gave me some mysterious comfort, but I dared not speak it out loud. Then came the TwentyFirst century and this guy named Tom Brady. All of a sudden the Patriots were winning everything. It was awful and it still is if you are a Jets fan. If I had still lived in New York it would have given me comfort to hang around with others like me and share our sorrows together, it would help relieve the pain. Here in New Hampshire, we Jets fans are few and far apart. We are not even sure who is sharing our misery. Drowning in a human sea of Patriots jerseys screaming “Brady” and “Welker” from their backs, we search out that brave soul who might take that chance to don his or her “Sanchez”” shirt to send out a message. It isn’t going to be me. Sure, we had our moment a couple of years ago when we knocked the Patriots out. A few brave fans put on their Jets hats and jerseys. But we didn’t make

it to the big game and once again, the wind was kicked out of us. We found ourselves suddenly becoming Giants fans for a day and screaming as they beat the Patriots twice in the Super Bowl (hee…hee) but it was a short-lived euphoria. We certainly weren’t celebrating the victory, we were celebrating the loss. So now, we are facing another season. And, to be honest, I’m not feeling very optimistic for a Jets Super Bowl appearance. I haven’t put in my early order for the giant supermarket party platter or the 84-inch HD television. Still, it wouldn’t matter. Who’d come over to share with me anyway? My only hope, like the only hope of the multitude of Jets fans walking incognito amongst us, is to any Patriot’s losses. My real reason for writing this column is to bring a spark of hope to other Jets fans like myself. To let you know that you are far from alone. We all have to live with what we’ve got but we must also be strong in our hope. The next time you are in the supermarket look around you. Look past the “Brady” and “Welker” and “Hernandez” Jersey wearers and search out those who are unadorned. They just might be like you, suffering all these years, afraid to expose their allegiances in fear of whatever. Always ready to rise up. Take heart in the fact that someday we might all join forces in the street, waving our Jets banners in a victory parade. After all, it’s been a good start to the season and this just might be the year. Or not. Brendan welcomes your comments at brendan@ weirs.com.

FRIDAY NIGHT

COMEDY

To the Editor: I am replying to the letter of Claus Luebker in the September 13 issue of the Weirs Times in the letters section. First, I believe his letter to be an uneducated “rant in that he apparently does not understand our country and the principles upon which the USA was founded. Being from Europe, his thinking is obviously very much socialistic-much like our modern Democratic political party. He shows a “concern for our Constitution that it is being ignored or destroyed. Well, I have the same concern, and I agree with him on that point. But he apparently fails to recognize that the dangers to our Constitution and the Founding Fathers’ principles come from the present administration now in power. Secondly, in truth and under serious study, this administration and its backing Democratic Party have been shown to be antagonistic to the Judeo-

Christian principles upon which the country was founded. Their political platform is not only “undemocratic but very much immoral, such as being in favor of `gay marriage’ and abortion. I have made a detailed study of their political philosophy and am disturbed to find that they are following the socialistic (yea, ‘communistic’) plan to gain power over institutions and individuals. I am also concerned that the opposing political party in this election year has not “pressed the issue. Rather than fight over the statements made by each other, there needs to be exposure concerning the dangers of the philosophy of socialism that is already beginning to take us captive. I say to those who back the current administration: “Wake up to what is happening. And to those like Mr. Luebker who misinterpret our situation and condone our slide toward socialism and tyranny: go back to Europe, where the political situation is more to your liking. This election will surely

Undecided? To The Editor: I saw a clear contrast of the two parties at their Conventions: The Republicans reached out to all Americans with a platform that is proGod, pro-life, pro-family, pro-woman, pro-freedom, pro-capitalism and proAmerica. They promote personal responsibility, secure borders, and Internet freedom. They want to keep our taxes low, thus leaving us the ability to choose the charities we will support, rather than have the government make those decisions for us. The Democrats focused on a number of “special interest groups, promoting state-controlled health care, gun control, abortion, gay marriage, open borders, environmentalism, and open hostility by self-proclaimed Catholics toward actual Roman Catholic beliefs. Many of the delegates did not want to acknowledge an appreciation of God or our Israeli allies. Their big government policies will bring about more intervention in our daily lives, government dependency, and economic destruction. How can anyone be undecided as to how they will vote? Romney’s “Secret Video” & the Dem Politics of “Squirrel!”

Useful Idiots WASHINGTON -Ever since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2012, the Obama White House has sought to lay blame for deadly and destructive anti-Amerby Oliver North Syndicated Columnist ican attacks in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and more than two dozen other countries on someone else. The O-Team -- and the perpetrators -- have had a lot of help from the “useful idiots” in the mainstream media. The disinformation campaign being waged by the Obama administration over the cause of this violence would be comedic but for the fact that six Americans have been killed and dozens have been injured. From the perspective of many “covering this story,” the global jihad we’re witnessing is mostly the fault of an incompetent “filmmaker,” and the “spontaneous outrage” is over a “provocative video.” Notably, the same is be-

ing said about protests against French diplomatic posts in the Middle East because “obscene cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad” were published in a French magazine. What’s really obscene is the way all of this has been covered by the potentates of the press -- particularly the events in Cairo, Benghazi and Afghanistan. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo was first off the block -- issuing an apology for a poorly made Internet video titled “Innocence of Muslims.” Though the video was shot in 2011 -- not by an Israeli as first reported but by an Egyptian -- it attracted almost no attention when brief segments first appeared on the Internet in July 2012. The Obama administration continues to tell us that the Muslim Brotherhood and a host of other Islamic radical groups in 30 countries just happened to come across the “offensive videos” on the 11th anniversary of the devastating 9/11 al-Qaida attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 of our countrymen. That alone requires a willful See north on 31

First Amendment sabotage by White House officials in the name of political correctness? Squirrel! Chronic joblessness, high gas prices, exploding dependency? Squirrel! Squirrel! Squirrel! As Election Day draws nearer, the Obama campaign and its surrogates in the Fourth Estate have infested the political arena with an army of tactical and rhetorical rodentia. One week, it’s GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney’s high school hijinks. The next, it’s a heinous smear about Romney killing a steelworker’s cancerstricken wife. Or, it’s a hit job on multiple sclerosis survivor Ann Romney’s therapeutic horse. Then, it’s faux rage over Romney’s firm statement condemning the feckless White House response to the murders of our U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi. This week, it’s a “secret Rom-

ney video” shot undercover at a closed-door dinner with Florida donors in May. Unemployed Democratic operative James Carter IV (grandson of former president and malaise engineer Jimmy Carter) brokered the film to progressive Mother Jones magazine. Now, the same media lapdogs who had conniption fits when the late Andrew Breitbart and conservative investigative journalist James O’Keefe used undercover video are tripping over themselves to publish glowing profiles of Carter the Fourth and his impressive “furtive efforts” to secure the Romney tapes. Carter the Fourth found the cameraman on Twitter, invoked his family name and convinced the mole to leak the tape to Mother Jones’ David Corn. To quote Joe Biden with all due sarcasm: BFD. But back to the bigger Big, Fluffy Distraction at hand: Let’s reflect for a moment on the Beltway hoohah over one small snippet from Romney’s nearly hour-long talk. Here’s the quote that has liberal finger-waggers and Republican wet-finger-in-the-wind windbags in meltdown mode: “There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney explained to an audience member who asked how the candidate was going to change the “we’ll take care of you” mentality of Obama voters. “All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to hous-

UN Assembly Session Opens Amid Global Storm Clouds U N I T E D NATIONS— The UN General Assembly has opened amid global storm clouds and economic gloom. Presiby John J. Metzler dents, Prime Syndicated Columnist Ministers, Kings and Potentates gather in New York for the 67th annual session to the backdrop of spreading violence in the Middle East, a looming nuclear weapons program in Iran, a humanitarian crisis in much of the developing world, and the undertow of worldwide recession, delegates will be confronted and likely confounded by challenges which have longsimmered but are now at a boiling point. Surprisingly the new President of the Assembly is Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic who was elected after a strong Russian lobbying effort for the yearlong post. Though the youngest Assembly President ever at 37, (not to be confused with the Secretary General), Britisheducated Jeremic has become well-known for his lawyerly Security Council presentations on the issue of the breakaway Serb province of Kosovo. To imagine that less than twenty years following the breakup of former Yugoslavia and the subsequent indictment and conviction of many Serb war criminals in international courts, that a Serb, albeit from a different democratic government, would gain the prestige to lead the Assembly is quite a diplomatic feat. Significantly two of his advisors include former Russian Premier Yevgeny Primakov (a once legendary KGB Mid-East expert) and former Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos of the Socialist Party. As for the actual debate, the speakers list includes the Presidents and Prime Ministers from the UN’s 193 member states. U.S. President Barack Obama, France’s Francois Hollande, South Africa’s Jacob Zuma, and Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai will speak on the first day along with the Kings of Morocco and

Jordan. Controversary shadows the speakers list with Mahmoud Ahmadinijad of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s longtime dictator among them. Faces new to the Assembly include Egypt’s Mohammed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood government is setting new foreign policy parameters for his country, and Burma’s / Myanmar’s leader who is wisely trying to break his country’s self-imposed isolation. A blizzard of 168 Agenda Items crowd the debate and ensuing Assembly sessions into December with the perennial items Question of Palestine, Sustainable Development, Risk of Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East, Prevention of an Arms Rave in Outer Space,. and overviews of humanitarian, human rights, and peacekeeping budgets. My favorite remains Question of the Malagasy Islands of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europa, and Bassas da India, places discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese mariners and still in a legal limbo status? While the agenda items are but a backdrop to the wider debate, poignant political issues such as Syria’s ongoing civil war, the trashing of Western and especially American embassies in the Muslim world, and the perennial showdown with Iran are key points of concern. Syria’s raging conflict, knocked off the headlines by mob violence and focused Al-Qaida attacks throughout the Middle East, and the ramifications of the Arab Spring political movements, are yet to be resolved. So too are the pressing humanitarian crises in Somalia, Haiti, Darfur and much of Central Africa which much of the world has so conveniently forgotten. As Secretary General Ban Kimoon told a prayer service at the onset of the new Assembly, “Conflict continues to claim the lives of innocents from Syria to Central Africa to Afghanistan. In all regions, communities are facing economic hardship and political uncertainty,” adding

that both global unemployment and intolerance are also on the rise. “Peace and security is a prerequisite for the stability needed for global economic growth, sustainable development and

social progress,” stated the new General Assembly President Jeremic. Nonetheless those intractable problems of global peace and security usually go before the

The Fallacy of Redistribution The recently discovered tape on which Barack Obama said back in 1998 that he believes in redistribution is not really news. He said the same by Thomas Sowell thing to Joe Syndicated Columnist the Plumber four years ago. But the surfacing of this tape may serve a useful purpose if it gets people to thinking about what the consequences of redistribution are. Those who talk glibly about redistribution often act as if people are just inert objects that can be placed here and there, like pieces on a chess board, to carry out some grand design. But if human beings have their own responses to government policies, then we cannot blithely assume that government policies will have the effect intended. The history of the 20th century is full of examples of countries that set out to redistribute wealth and

ended up redistributing poverty. The communist nations were a classic example, but by no means the only example. In theory, confiscating the wealth of the more successful people ought to make the rest of the society more prosperous. But when the Soviet Union confiscated the wealth of successful farmers, food became scarce. As many people died of starvation under Stalin in the 1930s as died in Hitler’s Holocaust in the 1940s. How can that be? It is not complicated. You can only confiscate the wealth that exists at a given moment. You cannot confiscate future wealth -- and that future wealth is less likely to be produced when people see that it is going to be confiscated. Farmers in the Soviet Union cut back on how much time and effort they invested in growing their crops, when they realized that the government was going to take a big part of the harvest. They slaughtered and ate young farm animals that they would normally keep tending and feeding while raising them to maSee Sowell on 34

Chiropractic...because the body heals itself. As heard on the Radio

Are You Giving Your Child The Gift of Health? by Karolina LaBrecque Ph.D

One of the most famous pediatricians, Dr. Sears says: “One of the most important things you can do for your child is give them the gift of health. The healthy child is a privileged child who grows up with an emotional, physical, social and intellectual advantage.” I totally agree with this statement. Unfortunately the statistics are showing just an opposite trend. Currently (depending on ethnicity) between 15%-25% of American children are overweight, and the average child consumes more than 12 ounces of sugar a day. Another statistical fact: In children ages six to seventeen, just from 1979 to 1999, hospitalization for obesity related diabetes doubled, gallbladder disease tripled and obesity-related sleep apnea increased

fivefold. The most sad and scary part of these statistics is the fact that children who are overweight at six have a 25 percent chance of becoming overweight adults. If a child remains fat until he or she is twelve the chance of becoming a fat adult increases to 75 percent. More people die each year from obesity-related diseases than in war and accidents. So how can we reverse this sad and scary trend and set up our children for success? The child’s health begins with the Parents. By living a healthy L.E.A.N lifestyle a whole family can tremendously improve their health. What is L.E.A.N? It is a scientifically based, family approved Dr. Sears Kids program that is based on balanced and healthy changes in four areas of life: Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition. Those

four pillars form a base for a wellness program that is easy to implement. It is not a strict menu plan or a calorie counting diet but a program that redirects the child’s cravings toward healthy eating and living habits. The benefits of implementing this program extend also to the adults in family. Families that practice this form of healthy living reported improvement in their children’s attitudes, behavior, learning, selfesteem, energy, and focus. Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

In case you haven’t noticed this is an election year. You were probably aware of this if you experience any media, in any way, at any point. It is only September, but it has been inescapable for months. The advertising is out of control. The way we have instant access to such ridiculous amounts of information, makes our lives saturated with mud slinging, promises, and probably some truth stretching moments. Clearly, no matter which side of the party line you fall on two major concerns are healthcare and the economy. These issues certainly don’t stand alone, and are in fact intrinsically linked together. Throw out your political party affiliation for a second, and really look at the problem. Healthcare spending is too much. Forbes. com reported in January that our National Health care Expenditure for 2012 is looking to be 2.7 trillion‌..trillion. That’s approximately 17% of our GDP! That is insane! What’s really crazy is that some of that expense is for the care of preventable disease. In May of 2012 the Wall Street Journal online posted a study from the state of California. The study looked at the California Public Employees Retirement System. This health program spent $1.6 billion in 2008 and 22.4% of that was spent on “avoidable, chronic illnessesâ€?. Obviously, this is a small sample size. Yet, if this trend were to hold true throughout our country, imagine the economic implications for us if we could avoid preventable disease more often. We are talking about major savings and major money. Some of the most common preventable diseases are diabetes, cancer, stroke,

heart disease, and lung disease. That’s not to say, that in some cases, these diseases can occur and were unpreventable. That can happen. It does mean, however, all your risk of these issues can be improved with certain lifestyle choices. As it stands now, I’m sure you want to be healthy (who doesn’t?), but it actually goes deeper that that. Our country is very unhealthy and it is damaging not just our bodies, but our economy and future. It is important for us all to get as healthy as possible for our own sake and for the well-being of our country. Here are some easy ways to potentially decrease your risks of the common preventable diseases: 1) Stop smoking: shouldn’t this be obvious now? Save money and save your health. 2) Lose weight: this can help with your risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and stroke. Simply put, we all need to move daily and focus on eating more fruits/veggies and less processed food. 3) Decrease stress: exercise, daily journaling, and daily prayer/mediation have all been thought to help with stress, which is a factor in depression, hypertension, and even heart disease.

Free

4) Visit you chiropractor: Chiropractic is not a treatment of those preventable diseases. However, a common complaint I hear in our offices when first meeting someone is that back pain prevents them from daily exercise. Movement helps control weight, decrease stress, and decreases depression. Low back pain also, according to many sources, costs us 100 billion annually. 5) Drink more water: I think most people are dehydrated. Your body doesn’t run well like this. Try drinking at least 64 ounces daily and, depending on your activity level or your size, you may need more. Our country will make some big decisions in this upcoming election. No matter which way the vote goes, one thing in regard to our healthcare and the economy will remain true: real change will only come from all of us, as individuals making healthy choices and truly improving our healthcare system and our economy.

Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC., graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2007. He is currently working with Crossroads Chiropractic at both of their locations in Meredith and Pembroke, NH. Their website is www.crossroadschiropractic.com.

leaders for the walk gathered for the kick-off meeting for the Lakes Region Walk. There are forty-six teams participating in the Lakes Region Walk. Each team member is required to raise at least seventyfive dollars to receive a T-shirt. Teams numbers have also been growing over

the years. Last year Team Talon had seven walkers participating in last year’s event; this year there are fifteen team members plus eight others who will walk with the team. When you consider the numbers nationwide, it is staggering how the event grows each year.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, September 27, 2012

I continue to support Republican c a n d id a t e for District 7 Josh Youseff, knowing he is the right by Niel Young person, at Advocates Columnist the right time for NH Senate. What I cannot and will not do is forget how low some Republicans will go to win; or in this case, to defeat Josh. Republicans like Jeb Bradley, Peter Bragdon and Ken Merrifield believed Josh was not worthy of a seat in the Senate. Obviously, with Bill Grimm, loser of said GOP Primary knew the “Franklin Gang planned to destroy Josh by digging into his personal business. I think Ed Mosca, Legal Advisor to Bill O’Brien, got involved as a vendetta toward Josh. Ed is the exwife’s lawyer. How does a taxpayer funded legal advisor have the right to use his position to discuss Josh’s personal business? Oh, and don’t forget the Concord Monitor reporter who assisted Merrifield in spreading the story. Lesson for young folks who might like to enter the political arena some day: “Just being a Republican doesn’t mean those who think they are the ‘party bosses’ have to say they’re sorry. ******** I seem to be a lightning rod for both sides. A confused Laconia resident’s letter re: me, to Laconia Daily Sun where I supported Mitt Romney for having the courage to point that there are 47% of Americans (and illegals) who are committed to Obama. That is why it is said: capture those voters in the middle. Letter writer: “Mr. Young I read with interest your letter in the Sept. 19 edition, in which you supported Mitt Romney’s callous words regarding the

47-percent who do not pay federal taxes. I was confused at your stance because it seems to me that you once again contradicted statements you previously have made. “You always speak highly of our military vets and your support for the men and women who return with injuries. You have stated the American people should support them for the very service they have provided. Then how can you condone Mr. Romney’s statement? In his statement he says that 47-percent of Americans do not pay taxes and are in fact only looking and living on handouts. These very people you have supported are part of that 47percent number. I stand by Mitt Romney, and I am positive he did not include military heroes, and folks who worked hard all of their lives and paid into a financially shaky safety net known as the Social Security system. ******** I sent her LTE to several colleagues. Four ladies who read and listen to my forums responded. Emailer 1: “He was not talking about the VETS, they are Republican for the most part. Emailer 2: “We all recognize who the 47% are whom Mitt Romney is referring to. Did he articulate it as best he could, probably not. While people are busy scrutinizing Mitt’s every word, the verdict isn’t out yet on Obama’s 1998 comment regarding redistribution.....because apparently it cannot be confirmed that in that clip it is actually B.O. - Give me a break! “This is exactly why we need restructuring of the Fed. Gov. I’d rather give to all of the vets than to hand out to the very people who have CHOSEN not to take responsibility for their own

lives. I am not referring to a mother of 3 who worked hard and just lost her job due to anxiety, depression, etc. So, we will help them out - I can buy their prescription meds which they get hooked on. - How many of the real working class has anxiety and/or depression from concern about their future and their children’s future?? Too many entitlements along the way that people have forgotten what it’s like to earn something. Guess what, they are raising their kids the same way. “I do not recall Mitt categorizing our military and elderly as moochers and lazy. How the left loves to spin. I do believe the vets deserve more. This is why my husband and I give so generously with our own money we have worked hard to earn. We give to Vets Organizations to make their lives a bit easier. It’s OUR way of redistributing OUR wealth on OUR terms....and anyone with integrity will NEVER neglect their veterans or elderly. Emailer 3: “The point of all this is not who the 47% are, but what will our country look like when that number is 57% or 67%? We can all concede that everyone who gets a check from the government feels justified for one reason or another. And, everyone else will have an opinion as to the validity of each justification. So, the real question is whether or not the situation is sustainable. Anyone who does not put their own desires aside for the good of the country is selfish, especially when the situation can be fixed while at the same time, protecting our most needy. Otherwise, the downward spiral we find our country in will continue.

“The friends we are meeting and the connections we are making because of this are amazing,” said Angela. Undoubtedly, the most significant event at the Making Strides walks are the survivor tents. Here is where those most truly affected by Breast Cancer meet. Last year there were 80 survivors who chose to participate. “I didn’t know what to expect last year when I went to the survivor tent the first time,” said Beth. “Everyone had a different story and I came out of it feeling good.” “We present each survivor with a gift and a survivor medal,” said Becky Coliandris of the American Cancer Society who helps teams in their organizing and fundraising efforts. “Our goal is to be a fundraising partner,” said Becky. “The Making Strides was outstanding in providing tools for our raffle and so much more,” said Angela. The Making Strides Program has also, over twenty years, helped eliminate the stigma of breast cancer. It was not something that was often mentioned in public. “These kinds of events

have brought it more comfortably into the public eye,” said Becky. Still, the awareness continues to grow and the help that fundraisers like this have towards detection of breast cancer at the crucial early stages has been astronomical in terms of lives saved and therapies administered. “Technology has made the survival rates higher and higher,” said Beth. “Not all breast cancers are alike so early detection makes it easier to pinpoint the proper treatment.” Still, nothing is more helpful than stories from other survivors. “I remember the night I came back to work after I was told of my diagnosis,” said Beth. She was in the office when someone who worked close by stopped in. “I told her about my diagnosis and she told me she also had breast cancer,” said Beth, “I hardly knew her then and we spent an hour talking. When we were done, I felt so much better.” The success of programs like “Making Strides” and its tremendous contribution to breast cancer research has made thousands of stories like Beth’s, and the team that

was inspired by her journey, possible. Way too many to tell here, and that is a good thing. If you happen to drive by your neighborhood on a Sunday in October and see the thousands walking, wearing their yellow ribbons, know that within that group are the survivors who have inspired them all. So many stories over twenty years, and so many lives saved. “It’s amazing to see the amount of people on these walks,” said Angela. “It is like one big ribbon.” On Sunday, October 14th there are “Making Strides” events scheduled for Concord, North Conway, Nashua and Peterborough, On Sunday, October 21st there are walks planned for Laconia, Dover, Exeter and Manchester. For more information on how to participate in one of New Hampshire’s Twentieth Anniversary “Making Strides” events, or to donate, visit the American Cancer Society’s website at www.makingstrideswalk.org.

ing, to you name it. ... And they will vote for this president no matter what.” Romney explained that this portion of voters was comprised of “people who pay no income tax. ... I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” He’s talking, of course, about the Peggy the Moochers and Henrietta Hugheses of the world: savior-based Obama supporters for whom the cult of personality trumps all else. He’s talking about the Sandra Flukes and Julias of the world: Nanny State grievance-mongers who have been spoon-fed identity politics and victim Olympics from preschool through grad school and beyond. And he’s talking about the encrusted entitlement clientele who range from the Section 8 housing mob in Atlanta who caused a near-riot to the irresponsible, debtridden homeowners who mortgaged themselves into oblivion and want their bailout now, now, now. Media wonks sliced and diced the words like hibachi chefs on bath salts. Beltway conservative scribes David Brooks and Bill Kristol denounced Romney as insensitive and out of touch. But Romney told hard political truths, which he’s proclaimed openly on the campaign trail before. “If you’re looking for free stuff you don’t have to pay for, vote for the other guy,” he told a heckler in March. “That’s what he’s all about, OK? That’s not, that’s not what

I’m about.” Gasp! He said he’s against freeloaders. Oh, the inhumanity. In another section of the video that libs don’t want to talk about, Romney received his biggest applause when he defended his success and mentioned what Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio’s Cuban immigrant parents taught him. “When he grew up here poor, they looked at people who had a lot of wealth. His parents never once said, ‘We need some of what they have. They should give us some.’ Instead, they said, ‘If we work hard and go to school, someday we might be able to have that.’” Let the parsers and panicky pundits chase their tails and hurl their nuts. This election is about America’s makers versus America’s takers. Romney should never, ever apologize for making that clear. Security Council where the Damocles sword of the veto has led to political deadlock between the West and the Russians and the Chinese on key issues such as Syria. Will this change? Not likely, especially in the countdown to the American elections and the near paralysis of U.S. foreign policy. Though the General Assembly has passed tough resolutions on the Syrian situation, for example, the decisions are not legally binding upon the membership. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told correspondents, “This year’s general debate will be among our busiest ever… this reflects the tumultuous times in which we live; a time of turmoil and transition.” John J. Features exhibited in tour homes include the latest in home automation, entertainment and security, granite countertops, exercise rooms, wine cellars, insulated concrete form (ICF) foundations, structural insulated panels (SIPs), solid log home construction, custom timber framed construction and geothermal heating systems. The home prices run the gamut from affordable starter and retirement

cottages and chalets to expansive 4-season retreats, all in proximity to NH waterways, mountain resorts and area attractions. Select Parade homes have been awarded the National Green Building Standard for green construction while others are Energy Star-rated. I tried to comfort Sarah and Sharon by telling them the wind was good because it would soon blow the clouds away and when we reached the top it would push us down the ridge. As we headed up we passed a handful of the college students, they seemed to be struggling more than the others. A few looked cold and some looked exhausted. The icy white hoarfrost was clinging to the rocks and we experienced our first feel of winter. on a few rocks nearer the summit. Then as we stepped foot on top, the sun burst through and we could see the clouds breaking up around us giving us a view of Cannon and Garfield and down the ridge. We couldn’t have written a better script! We settled in on the south side of Lafayette with our backs leaning against its rocky summit. We took a long rest and admired the vast improving vista. We pointed out mountains where we have been and to others that we hope to climb together in the future. On the trail the wind

We passed many hikers on the ridge and we couldn’t help but feel sad for some of the fools in shorts with their bright red wind burned legs and others that looked like they would have been happier if they had remembered to bring along a hat and a pair of gloves. Did they really think it would be 50 degrees on the mountain tops after a night that was below freezing even down below? All I can say is people are tough.

Sharon LaVigne and Sarah McCann of New London and yours truly on the Franconia Ridge Trail just south of Mount Lafayette. The clouds lifted and the sun shined but the wind was fierce and we were glad to have plenty of warm clothes. If you’re planning a hike be sure to check out HikeSafe.com, it’s your responsibility. patenaude from 28

Between Lafayette and Lincoln we saw glider planes soaring above the notch and, in what seemed like just a few seconds, one of the sailplanes buzzed the ridge right above our heads! Fantastic, the pilot and his passenger were enjoying the same panorama without making the hike! On top of Little Haystack we lingered a while before heading down the Falling Waters Trail. The day was so stunning that it would have been easy to keep on hiking right over to Liberty and Flume! The trail practically goes straight off the mountain until the switchback at the intersection of Shining Rock. We didn’t visit the large wet ledge this trip -- next time. Sarah and Sharon were awed at the number of people that were still hiking up in the afternoon (maybe we passed 20 or 30). I recounted once after an early start on a holiday weekend, while descending Falling Waters, Charlie and I counted almost 300 people. Now we only count dogs (this trip I counted 8 and 2 were Dachshunds). Low water made cross-

Yet there was still plenty of water flowing to make all the waterfalls look fabulous. Although Hurricane Irene luckily didn’t wipe out the bridge over Walker Brook she sure made a mess of where Falling Waters and Bridle meet. Thank you to those that repaired the trail by filling in the deep washouts and removing the tangled

trees. You can still see the destruction in the woods along the trail. The weather forecast had been correct! The clouds had cleared and the day just kept getting better; it must have been 70 degrees at the parking lot in the afternoon sun. I wish you could have been with us, this was the best hike of the year! Have fun.

attack” during a protest prompted by the offensive video and that there “was no intelligence about any threat in Libya.” Of course, that narrative exonerates the administration from a failure to plan for radical Islamic “anniversary attacks” on Sept. 11. We now know that’s not what happened. As Catherine Herridge at Fox News discovered, there was intelligence about a possible terror attack in Libya two days prior to the event, and it was unrelated to the infamous video. The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is investigating the “discrepancies” between the O-Team’s storyline and the events on the ground. There are a number of additional questions that should be asked and answered: --Why was our ambassador to Tripoli in Benghazi on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary? --Who decided to delay placing U.S. Marine embassy security guards at our Libyan diplomatic missions? --Who made the decision to have our ambassador accompanied by such a small personal security detail on the trip to Benghazi, and when was it made? --Other than the Americans at the consulate, who else knew about the ambassador’s visit to Benghazi? If the vaunted Obama “national security team” didn’t prepare adequately for the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks, the Congress

and the American people deserve to know. But they can’t use “we just didn’t know” or the “spontaneous outrage” excuses for what happened on the night of Sept. 13-14 at Camp Leatherneck/Bastion. Nobody is saying that the well-executed assault that killed two U.S. Marines was anything but well-planned. The enemy employed well-aimed indirect fire, automatic weapons and a suicide assault against the 1,600acre U.S.-British base in Helmand province. The number of aircraft damaged and destroyed is staggering. We were told that the Arab Spring was going to make things better. The Obama Nobel Prize said as much. But for all of what has transpired since Sept. 11, 2012, there is one overriding question that needs to be asked and answered: How could this happen? Even useful idiots should want to know. suspension of disbelief by anyone at all familiar with reality. Only a tiny fraction of the young men assaulting our diplomatic posts, our military installations and U.S. businesses and killing Americans have seen what the White House and our State Department have described as a “disgusting,” “insulting” and “distasteful” movie. Yet major networks and print outlets continue to parrot the administration’s propaganda. If a Republican were in the Oval Office, the press would be calling it a cover-up. The failure of the media elites to ask questions and demand answers is particularly egregious in two specific cases: the “spontaneous” attack on our consulate in Benghazi, in which four Americans were killed on the night of Sept. 11-12, and the attack in Afghanistan in which two U.S. Marines were killed during a ground assault at Camp Leatherneck/Bastion. Both of these events warrant questions -- and answers -- as to how they could happen. For nine days, the Obama administration -- including Susan Rice, our ambassador to the United Nations -- refused even to describe what happened at our Benghazi consulate as a terror attack. The White House and State Department insisted that Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods were killed during an “unplanned

turity. People in industry are not inert objects either. Moreover, unlike farmers, industrialists are not tied to the land in a particular country. Russian aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky could take his expertise to America and produce his planes and helicopters thousands of miles away from his native land. Financiers are even less tied down, especially today, when vast sums of money can be dispatched electronically to any part of the world. If confiscatory policies can produce counterproductive repercussions in a dictatorship, they are even harder to carry out in a democracy. A dictatorship can suddenly swoop down and grab whatever it wants. But a democracy must first have public discussions and debates. Those who are targeted for

confiscation can see the handwriting on the wall, and act accordingly. Among the most valuable assets in any nation are the knowledge, skills and productive experience that economists call “human capital. When successful people with much human capital leave the country, either voluntarily or because of hostile governments or hostile mobs whipped up by demagogues exploiting envy, lasting damage can be done to the economy they leave behind. Fidel Castro’s confiscatory policies drove successful Cubans to flee to Florida, often leaving much of their physical wealth behind. But poverty-stricken refugees rose to prosperity again in Florida, while the wealth they left behind in Cuba did not prevent the people there from being poverty stricken under Castro. The lasting wealth the refugees took with them

was their human capital. We have all heard the old saying that giving a man a fish feeds him only for a day, while teaching him to fish feeds him for a lifetime. Redistributionists give him a fish and leave him dependent on the government for more fish in the future. If the redistributionists were serious, what they would want to distribute is the ability to fish, or to be productive in other ways. Knowledge is one of the few things that can be distributed to people without reducing the amount held by others. That would better serve the interests of the poor, but it would not serve the interests of politicians who want to exercise power, and to get the votes of people who are dependent on them. Barack Obama can endlessly proclaim his slogan of “Forward, but what he is proposing is going backwards to policies that have failed repeatedly in countries around the world. Yet, to many people who cannot be bothered to stop and think, redistribution sounds good. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. to fit a particular situation. Rather, it would be better to abandon it until such time when they may come to realize they have misinterpreted Church teaching or they have adopted fallacies misguidedly taught. Truth is absolute and unshakable. Even though its followers may diminish in volume, its strength will remain concrete. As we approach the crucial vote in November it is important for all of us, whatever our religious persuasion, or lack of, to clearly examine the basic ethical foundation of our beloved Country as compared to the moral decline prevalent in our present society. Is this the path we want to continue on? Ambivalence, fear of “offending, getting along, only avoid facing today’s realities and serve to promote the degradation of our once cherished solid principles which value the unborn and family life. Those who embrace TRUTH also welcome and assist those in need. It is my hope and prayer that we citizens will not be persuaded with the superficiality of those seeking office, but rather with what their moral convictions, by their example, really are.

Rochester Opera House Presents “Annie” October 18th through November 3rd

Rochester Opera House presents the uplifting Broadway musical classic Annie from Friday, October 19 through Saturday, November 3 with evening performances at 8:00 PM and matinees at 2:00 PM. Annie, a ROH Production is directed by Kelli Connors with live music directed by Kathy Fink. When describing her love for Annie, Fink expresses the universal sentiment for one of America’s most beloved musicals. “Despite harsh challenges and obstacles, Annie’s enthusiasm and optimism for life is contagious and the songs are infectious!” It’s a hard-knock life for s p u n k y, red -h a ire d orp h a n Annie, who resides at the Municipal Orphanage in New York City. Annie (Kylee Brown/Autumn Rivas) is the one voice

of hope for her fellow orphans, who are under the supervision of the tyrannical Miss Hannigan (Jean Batchelder). Dreaming of reuniting with her parents, Annie briefly escapes to the streets, where she befriends a stray dog that she names Sandy. Caught and returned to the orphanage, Annie barely misses a beating, when Grace Farrell (Heather Glenn Wisson), secretary to billionaire politician

Oliver Warbucks, arrives. In order to improve his image, Warbucks (Tom Whateley) is looking for a child to spend Christmas at his mansion. Farrell decides the scrappy red-haired orphan would be just perfect. Once at the mansion, Annie charms the staff as well as the seemingly cold-hearted Warbucks and experiences her most wonderful Christmas, ever, and the beginning of a whole new life.
