every face painted on every Annalee doll creation. Looking in the mirror she would draw herself, no matter what her mood might be that day, and then use that as the face of her latest doll creation. Annalee, born in Concord, NH in 1915, loved to make dolls as a young girl and sold them through the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and later to S.S. Pierce in Boston where she had moved. Soon after marrying Charles “Chip” Thorndike, they moved to Meredith

where she began designing a small line of skier dolls. The success of these dolls led to the creation of the company, Annalee Mobiltee Dolls in 1955. The ongoing success of the dolls led to stores buying them for holiday displays as well as being used for New Hampshire tourism materials. The country took notice and by 1960 the dolls were being sold in forty states as well as Canada and Puerto Rico. For the next forty-five plus years all of the proSee ANNALEE on 20

It was once written that the Annalee Doll was “the most famous manufactured item to come from New Hampshire in the 20th Century.” To say that this is also true of the 21st Century up to now, wouldn’t be overstating things at all as there aren’t many people in the country who haven’t heard of Annalee Dolls if they don’t already own at least one. Over the last several years, the company has

changed locations and even some of its manufacturing in keeping up with the times, but now the operations of this important New Hampshire business are back under one roof and stronger than ever. “The new owner felt it was very important to keep Annalee in the town of Meredith where it all began,” said Retail Director Betsey Pelletier. Created by Annalee Thorndike in the 1950s, Annalee Dolls are known for the image of Annalee herself which was part of

Trail we went and then turned onto the Round Pond Trail until we reached the pond. Round Pond’s sparkling water was extra lovely surrounded by the trees that had turned early boasting bright red leaves. The trail along the edge of the lake with its stepping stone work and solid foot bed not only looks nice and natural but protects the trail and pond. This past June I visited the area but it was a cloudy wet day. As we made our way around the pond I realized just how much the clouds were hiding then. Now I could see that Belknap Mountain was big and round right up above the pond. Leaving the Pond’s edge we headed up to Mount Mack. Nearing the summit we stopped at the first view ledge and enjoyed the vista. Last time I saw nothing but the inside of a

Brrrr, the morning was chilly, the skies were clear and blue and it was a fine day to go hiking in the Belknaps. Fall is here. At 9am we snagged the last of the five parking places at the East Guildford Trailhead on Wood Road (overflow parking is below roadside on Bickford Road). Our plan was to make a fast loop, more like a figure eight, to Round Pond, over Mt Mack and over Mt. Klem and back to Round Pond. We jogged up the trail just wearing our waist packs (just say no to calling it a fanny pack). We carried water and the essentials. As I jogged along I hoped I would warm up soon since it was colder than I thought. I did warm up but in hindsight I wish I had brought along a wind shirt. I was chilly longer than I liked. To The Editor: With the cool and confident demeanor exhibited by President Clinton, President Obama and other sociopaths, Hillary Clinton repeated the lie that President Obama was forced to withdraw American forces from Iraq by the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) created by President Bush. This lie has been protected by the media and by the obscurity of the facts. When President Obama took office, Iraq was stable. President Bush had negotiated a SOFA based on the assumptions that conditions in Iraq would remain stable or improve, that a significant (30,000 – 50,000) American force would remain, and that a strong American influence would help maintain stability in Iraq. All parties expected to renegotiate the SOFA if conditions changed. And conditions changed. President Obama refused to follow sensible policies to ensure the continued stability of Iraq. Contrary to the advice of his military and civilian advisors, President Obama refused to leave a large American force in Iraq, and he withdrew the American influence that helped ensure stability in Iraq. As problems arose, Iraqi leaders and American representatives recognized the need for and began negotiating a new SOFA. But President Obama didn’t want a new

Our Story

SOFA. A person whose Presidency, as he claimed, would cause “the rise of the oceans ‌ to slow and the earth ‌ to healâ€? would have been able to renegotiate a new, favorable SOFA if he wanted one. But President Obama was more interested in domestic political considerations. With a new SOFA, President Obama would clearly be responsible for events in Iraq. Without a new SOFA, President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and their supporters knew they could, with the help of the media, lie and blame President Bush for whatever happened in Iraq, and this is what they have been doing. The fact that negotiations on a new Status of Forces Agreement began shows that Iraqis and Americans recognized that a new agreement was needed. Failure to obtain a new SOFA when one was required is President Obama’s failure. President Obama’s failures created the instability in Iraq that enabled the ISIS victories in Iraq. ISIS’s victories in Iraq made it wealthy, boosted its recruiting efforts, and made it the worldwide threat that it has become. President Obama’s and Hillary’s immigration and refugee programs have brought ISIS provocateurs here to threaten, kill, and instigate others to kill Americans. It is President Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s pol-

Time For Clinton To Look In Mirror To The Editor: Are there cases where law abiding minorities are treated unfairly by police? Tragically, yes in a huge country like ours. On the other hand, the statistics show there is no epidemic of police murdering innocent people through racial profiling. With those facts being undisputed, why the media fueled frenzy from elements within the Democratic Party talking about an “epidemic of police murdering innocent blacks? Could it be that there is nobody left among our friends on the left side of the isle who can do simple math? Instead of highlighting any of the countless examples of tolerance within stricken communities, we see a one-sided spotlight on rare moments of police injustice. It is bad enough that our President invites radicals to the White House, unwittingly providing cover for an outpouring of violence coming from seedier elements within our communities. Now, with millions in campaign money backing her megaphone, Hillary sees votes on the See mail boat on 41

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Important Endorsement

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It is with great pride that I learned that the Flatlander Free Press has endorsed me for governor. Even though we have had our differences in the past (I did make a big stink as to why a newspaper called the Free Press cost a quarter) we have since made up and I was invited to their offices for an editorial meeting. The interview went so well that they decided right on the spot to endorse me for two reasons: One, I took out a two-year subscription and; Two, the other candidates were too busy to come in to meet. Since you may have missed this important interview published in last Monday’s issue, I am reprinting a portion of it here with their permission (and the promise to extend to a three year subscription). Q: Candidate Smith we’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk with us today? A: You’re welcome Bill Q: Um, it’s John. A: Sorry. Q: Do you think you have the experience to be governor? A: Of course not, I have never been a governor before. Have you? Q: Do you think that might be a liability? A: Only time will tell, Steve. Q: John A: Sorry. Q: Umm..what would be the first thing you would do as governor?

A: Well, I understand that the inauguration ceremony can be a little long and then I will have to give some kind of long-winded speech afterwards as is the tradition. So, I would imagine a trip to the men’s room might be first. I am looking forward to using the governor’s bathroom for the first time. I hear it is magnificent. I also have some decorating ideas I would like to try out, but that would have to wait till my first full day as governor. Q: Well, I meant what would be your first “officialâ€? act as governor? A: Hmmm, not sure. I have always wanted to declare and official day for something or other, that would be fun. Q: Well, you have made a lot of campaign promises, wouldn’t you want to start with one of them? A: Oh yeah. Thanks Steve, that’s a great idea. Q: Which one would you start with? A: Umm‌let me see‌ it’s right on the tip of my tongue. I think I made some promises about taxes or something. There were so many I forget. Q: Yes, you said you planned to help lower property taxes through innovative programS. A: I did? Wow, that’s a good one. Well then, yes, that is what I will work on first right after I declare a day for something or other. Q: And how exactly will you do that? A: Don’t you remember? I think I said it a few times while I was campaigning, but I can’t remember right now. Q: Yes, you did give three very specific solutions. A: Great. Then I’ll do the first one, then the second and then the third.

Q: Can you give us an idea about what your first year in office might be like? A: I doubt it. I can hardly figure out what’s going to happen by lunchtime. By the way do you have a cafeteria here? I am starving. Q: Yes. A: Great, could we speed this up a bit then? Q: What is the one thing you are most looking forward to as governor? A: Well, first the pay. It’s a considerable amount over what I make right now so that’s pretty exciting. We’d like to have some renovations done to our home so that would be a big help. I’m also looking forward to the nice big desk the governor works at. The desk I have at home is pretty small and the chair squeaks a lot so it would be nice to sit in a new one. Q: Are you looking forward to helping the people of New Hampshire have better lives? A: Oh yeah, that too. Q: Do you see being governor as a stepping stone towards higher political office in the future? A: Sure, isn’t that the main reason for doing this? I mean the governor’s salary is pretty sweet but when you get to congress or senate then you’re really racking in the dough and all you have to do is show up. I’d have to be crazy not to consider it. Q: Well, candidate Smith, we want to thank you for coming in for this interview and we wish you the best of luck in the upcoming election and thank you for your subscription. A: You are quite welcome. We are keeping our fingers crossed. I’ve already ordered new living room furniture and carpeting for the house.

Hillary,

Interrupted Whatever happened to “I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar”? Whither “Girl Power”? When did Rosie the Riveter’s “We Can Do It!” by Michelle Malkin give way to Syndicated Columnist Hillary the Haranguer’s “We Can’t Handle It”? It’s 2016, and the Democrats’ feminist heroine running for commander in chief is whinnying about being -- wait for it -interrupted. Quick! Prepare a complaint to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Poor, fragile, defenseless Hillary Clinton is a victim of the international human rights crime of serial conversational obstruction. Mainstream media outlets (also known as the Coalition of Liberal Narrative-Benders For Hillary) howled about the unconscionable injustice after Monday’s first presidential debate. “Donald Trump Interrupted Hillary Clinton 51 Times at Debate,” moaned US Weekly, which is owned by Clinton supporter and longtime Clinton donor Jann Wenner. “Donald Trump couldn’t stop interrupting Hillary Clinton,” complained The Huffington Post, founded by female Cambridge Union debating champ Arianna Huffington. Then there were the female writers for left-wing Vox who balked at Trump’s 51 interruptions involving “petulant asides,” “loud, insistent filibusters,” and the “one-word, schoolboy-like ‘Not’.” Clinton supporters to Clinton:

Slaaaay, Queen! Trump to Clinton: “Not.” Oh, no. The oppressive “Not!” Queen slayed. The Vox gals (is “gals” a trigger?) cited research dating back to the moldy-oldy 1970s about the ravaging effect of workplace interruptus on wimmin. Playing Clinton’s narrative amplifiers, they commiserated. “For most women in the workplace, the phenomenon is exhaustingly familiar.” Still feeling verbally battered Tuesday morning, Clinton’s old crony fixer and bagman, campaign chair John Podesta, told reporters that Trump’s interruptions were “reminiscent of the way a lot of women feel about bullies in their lives.” Female reporters Andrea Mitchell and Jennifer Epstein dutifully tweeted Podesta’s dog whistle to feminists. Spare me, you shameless sacks of spin. Un-stage-managed debates usually involve spontaneous and contentious back and forth. Without the jibes and jeers and repartee and sighs and sideeyes, you’re not debating. You’re side-by-side monologuing with a Kabuki moderator keeping time and warming a seat. Seriously, what kind of role model for girls is a female presidential candidate who claims to be “ready to lead” -- yet whose campaign cries sexism whenever she’s confronted with anything less than full and complete obeisance in the public square? Remember: Clinton similarly suffered from acute interruptophobia during campaign forums with daytime talk show diva Matt Lauer and primary opponent Bernie Sanders. Ironically, the Clinton cam-

Riot First, Ask Questions Later The Charlotte rioters didn’t know whether the controversial police shooting of Keith Scott was justiby Rich Lowry fied or not, Syndicated Columnist and didn’t care. They worked their mayhem -trashing businesses and injuring cops, with one protester killed in the disorder -- before anything meaningful could be ascertained about the case except that the cops said Scott had a gun and his family said he didn’t. Charlotte is the latest episode in the evidence-free Black Lives Matter movement that periodically erupts in violence after officer-involved shootings. The movement is beholden to a narrative of systematic police racism to which every case is made to conform, regardless of the facts or logic.

It doesn’t matter if the police officer is an African-American with an unblemished record and numerous character witnesses. This describes Brentley Vinson, the officer who fatally shot Keith Scott. It doesn’t matter if the victim disobeys the police in a tense situation and acts in a potentially threatening manner. Despite cops with guns drawn yelling orders at him (and his wife shouting, “Don’t you do it”), Scott exited his vehicle and approached officers without raising his hands. It doesn’t matter if the allegedly unarmed victim turns out to have been armed. Everything points to Scott having had a gun, even though the family insists he had a book (the police didn’t find one at the scene). The police dashcam and bodycamera video of the Scott shooting is inconclusive but broadly supportive of the police story. The police recovered an ankle See lowry on 38

“Golden Decade” For Canadian/Chinese Economic Ties? UNITED NAT I O N S - Jus-

tin Trudeau, Canada’s media star Prime Minister, in his first address to the General Assembly, preby John J. Metzler sented a wideSyndicated Columnist ranging tableaux of liberal platitudes and glowing feel good commitments. Proclaiming an almost theological commitment to diversity, an acceptance of Syrian refugees, and climate change policies, Trudeau presented his view of a revived Canada as the perennial global good guy. Stylistically Trudeau’s address offered the syrupy sweet political nuggets of a campaign speech. But in substance there was so much lacking. Pledges on human rights issues were notably missing; and this is a hall where many of the 193 delegations are anything but paragons of democracy, as is his country Canada. Just days after Justin Trudeau’s victory lap in the cavernous UN General Assembly hall, he hosted Premier Li Keqiang from the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese delegation flew to Canada to talk business. Chinese Premier Li called for a “new Golden Decade” in Sino/Canadian commercial ties. During a Montreal luncheon of the Canada/China Business Forum, Li proclaimed, “If a free trade agreement is established between our two countries it will open up boundless opportunities for inves-

tors and business leaders.” Justin Trudeau added, “The economic potential between us is vast and we’ed be doing a great disservice to our people if we didn’t tap into it.” He alluded to the cooler Canadian relations with China during the previous conservative government. He was also trading on his late-father Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s popularity, as Canadian Prime Minister, who had opened diplomatic relations with Beijing back in 1970, one of the first major Western countries to recognize Mao’s China. Pierre Trudeau had a curious attraction to Mainland China, and this during an era when its totalitarianism was in vogue. Ottawa’s two-way trade with China is US$65 billion but with a huge imbalance; exports to China reached $15 billion but imports from the Mainland surged to $50 billion. The plan is to double bilateral trade by 2026. But as Prof. Meredith Lilly of Carleton University asserts, the widening trade will “only accentuate the already large trade imbalance we have with China.” Beyond commerce, Canada has become a major destination for Chinese tourists. Air Canada is inaugurating a new nonstop flight from Montreal to Shanghai. Why the renewed warmth in Sino/Canadian ties now? It is precisely China’s huge trade imbalance with the USA, a whopping $367 billion in 2015 alone, which remains a political lighting rod in the U.S. election campaign. Both Donald Trump and his Demo-

crat opponent Hillary Clinton talk tough on trade, especially concerning China. Former Quebec Premier Jean Charest opines that “It’s probably safe to assume that the relationship with China is going to be tougher

south of the border the day after the campaign than it is today, so I think the Chinese see Canada as a counterpoint to what’s happening in the U.S.” Charest told Toronto’s National Post that “Strategically for

‘Favors’ To Blacks Back in the 1960s, as large numbers of black students were entering a certain Ivy League university for the first time, someone asked a chemby Thomas Sowell istry profesSyndicated Columnist sor -- off the record -- what his response to them was. He said, “I give them all A’s and B’s. To hell with them.” Since many of those students were admitted with lower academic qualifications than other students, he knew that honest grades in a tough subject like chemistry could lead to lots of failing grades, and that in turn would lead to lots of time-wasting hassles -- not just from the students, but also from the administration. He was not about to waste time that he wanted to invest in his professional work in chemistry and the advancement of his own career. He also knew that his “favor” to black students in grading was going to do them more harm than good in the long run, because they wouldn’t know what they were supposed to know. Such cynical calculations were seldom expressed in so many words. Nor are similar cynical calculations openly expressed today in politics. But many successful political careers have been built on giving blacks “favors” that look good on the surface but do lasting damage in the long run. One of these “favors” was the welfare state. A vastly expanded welfare state in the 1960s destroyed the black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and generations of racial oppression.

In 1960, before this expansion of the welfare state, 22 percent of black children were raised with only one parent. By 1985, 67 percent of black children were raised with either one parent or no parent. A big “favor” the Obama administration is offering blacks today is exemption from school behavior rules that have led to a rate of disciplining of black male students that is greater than the rate of disciplining of other categories of students. Is it impossible that black males misbehave in school more often than Asian females? Or Jewish students? Or others? Is the only possible reason for the disparities in disciplining rates that the teachers and principals are discriminating against black males? Even when many of these teachers and principals in black neighborhoods are themselves black? But Washington politicians are on the case. It strengthens the political vision that blacks are besieged by racist enemies, from which Democrats are their only protection. They give black youngsters exemptions from behavioral standards, just as the Ivy League chemistry professor gave them exemption from academic standards. In both cases, the consequence -- unspoken today -- is “to hell with them.” Kids from homes where they were not given behavioral standards, who are then not held to behavioral standards in schools, are on a path that can lead them as adults straight into prison, or to fatal confrontations with the police. This is ultimately not a racial thing. Exactly the same welfare state policies and the same non-judgmental exemption from behavioral standards in Britain See Sowell on 41

Few Assume The Consent Of All The Rest, Without Any Such Consent Being Actually Given In the recent past some of us have stated that at the end of Barack Hussein Obama’s by Niel Young second Advocates Columnist term; he has NO plans to leave the stage. Now that the time is near, unlike those before him, other than the Clintons, Barack is alerting us that he plans to remain the community organizer for the world. When you imagine that; Trump looks pretty good to you, right? In a report by Kate Irby (mcclatchydc.com) Kate shows us that the prediction was correct. “Many U.S. presidents, upon leaving office, try to fade from the national spotlight and live the rest of their lives as private citizens. President Barack Obama implied in a Vanity Fair interview that he might choose to go a different route.” “In the interview conducted by presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, Obama talked about his use of the term ‘radical Islam,’ how he would miss Air Force One, and his desire to make the world better.” Then there’s a short bit where he hints at what life after the presidency might look like for him. He says there are some things he suspects he’ll be able to accomplish better after being president.” Aha – there it is! ******** Gazette of the United States Source: October 14, 1789, p.211, col.2: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been recognized by

the General Government; but the best security of that right after all is, the military spirit, that taste for martial exercise; which has always distinguished the free citizens of these States... Such men form the best barrier to the liberties of America.” ******** Lysander Spooner (18081887) Political theorist, activist, abolitionist: “Our constitutions purport to be established by ‘the people,’ and, in theory, ‘all the people’ consent to such government as the constitutions authorize. But this consent of ‘the people’ exists only in theory. It has been thought that we are represented. It has no existence in fact. Government is in reality established by the few; and these few assume the consent of all the rest, without any such consent being actually given”. It has been thought that we are represented. We are, right after the Lobbyists, Educators, US Chamber of Commerce, and the Public Employees Unions. Can you imagine Bill and Hillary, BHO, and Michele, running this once great country, AGAIN? ******** “Republicans in the House have proposed legislation that would eliminate the “Clinton defense,” a reference to Hillary Clinton’s argument that she should escape prosecution because she did not intend to violate the law when she set up her private email system and mishandled classified information. “Someone could argue the law could be called, ‘We meant what we said the first time,’” Texas Rep. John Ratcliffe told the Washington Examiner in explaining his proposal,

the “Classified Information Protection Act.” His bill is a response to the decision of military personnel to try using the same defense when they face charges under the Federal Records Act and the Espionage Act for exposing classified information. Some of them have argued that LIKE Clinton, they never intended to violate the law. http://www.washington examiner.com/gop-billkills-the-clinton-defensefor-violating-classification-laws/20Today&utm_ source= StructureCMShttp://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trumpon-shaky-ground-inbringing-up-bill-clintonaffairs/article/2603270 http://dailycaller. com/2016/09/30/presidential-debates-admitstrumps-mic-was-messedup/ AMERICA ONLY CARES ABOUT CHARACTER ,WHEN IT IS A REPUBLICAN INVOLVED. ******** In the state where CLINTON pal, Gov. Terry McAuliffe has a bit of trouble; the investigation of voter fraud in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Is this just the start? We can be sure that the criminals will not be punished. Terry is a friend of the Clintons. America vs. America is what this election is about.

Henry (Harry) Wilder Keyes was the 56th Governor of New Hampshire, serving in that position for one term in 1917 and 1918. He was then elected to be New Hampshire’s United States Senator in 1919, and was re-elected twice, continuing in office until 1937. ( He was succeeded in office by the influential Senator Styles Bridges.) A name that may be more recognizable than that of Harry Keyes may be that of his wife, Frances Parkinson Keyes, a prolific and popular author of the past century. Frances was born in Virginia, where her father, John Henry Wheeler, taught at the University of Virginia. Her mother, whose family lived in Newbury, Vermont, was Louise Fuller Johnson. After Miss Keyes’ father died when she was a young child, her mother re-married and the family lived in Newbury during the summers at a place called Oxbow and spent the winters in Boston. The Keyes family lived across the river on Pine Grove Farm near Haverhill, New Hampshire. Henry Wilder Keyes, a graduate of Harvard University, was a farmer and cattle breeder and one of the founders of the Woodsville National Bank where he served as President. He married Frances on June 4, 1904 when he was forty years old and she was eighteen

Frances maintained her legal residence in New Hampshire, even after her husband’s death in 1938 and her move to Louisiana to pursue her writing career. They had three sons, John P., Henry W. culture, and NASCAR is no exception. Seeing all the Confederate flags in Loudon was a bit incongruous, but NASCAR has strong southern roots. A nickname for the National Football League’s NFC South (Atlanta, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and Carolina) is the NASCAR Division. But on Sept. 25 the Chase for the Sprint Cup came to New England and Yankee Country. As aforementioned, I’d received an invite along with other veterans to meet NASCAR legend Tony Stewart before the race. Then we got to stand in front of the stage fac-

more attendees than does any other sport. Stirring renditions of the Canadian and American nation anthems were honored with everyone standing respectfully. And there also was a prayer, of all things, which I found refreshing in this age of the secular and the politically correct. I hearkened back to my youth, when I worked in the concession stand at Riverside Speedway in Groveton. I then laughed at the people who’d yell at the drivers during the race. A NASCAR competition is so loud you can’t even hear yourself

NHTI criminal justice student Bruce Caron (former soldier) and Weirs Times columnist Mike Moffett (former Marine) were special guests at the Sept. 25 NASCAR Race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. Caron and Moffett are seen here with NASCAR legend (and Bruce Caron look-a-like) Tony Stewart, who met with veterans before the race With apologies to humorist Dave Barry, auto racing is NOT boring. In fact, just walking around New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon on a NASCAR race day is quite exciting. Anytime you gather over 70,000 race fans in one venue you’re going to have some great energy—even apart from the race. NHMS hosted NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Bad Boy OffRoad 300 event on Sept. 25, as race fans from all over the country converged on Loudon. As I live within walking distance of the track, and as I’d received a special invitation to attend with a group of veterans, I was more than happy to show up early to take it all in. Every sport has its own

ing the main grandstand as the racers were introduced. I did a double-take when Danica Patrick (#10 car) came out. Her presence amongst all the guy drivers was almost as incongruous as were the Confederate flags. I decided to join her camp—me being a free agent in terms of favoring any driver in particular. NHTI student and fellow veteran Bruce Caron ended up in the Stewart camp—perhaps in part because they looked exactly alike. Governor Maggie Hassan made it a point to greet us individually and then we made our way to the stands to take in one of the top events in America’s most popular spectator competition— as stock car racing draws

October is a month of changes. We notice the days having fewer hours of sunlight. The temps are slowly lowering, leaves are showing their colors and then falling to the ground while we wait on Columbus day weekend events and think about what we might dress up for Halloween. It is also a time to experience fall seasonal beers; especially pumpkin-flavored beer. So with that in mind, this will be the first of four articles about NHbrewed pumpkin beers. Our first is brought to us by the great folks at Rockingham. Rockingham Brewing Company is only a little over a year old 10 barrel nano brewery with one aim in mind: to brew the best beer they know how to keep their customers coming back for more. Rockingham, started by Rob and Ali, has already carved out a wonderful slice of followers from this crowded beer universe with several of its favored offerings, most notably, Belly of the Beast BaconFlavored Stout. But they have at least 10 other notable flavors to savor in 22 oz bottles. A few to look for are Rockingham Ale, Javelina IPA, and Curly’s Gold. Located in Derry, NH, their tap room is open almost every day and is definitely worth a trip to talk to these delightful people. You can find out more about their current offerings on www.Facebook. com/Rockingham or at their website, https:// rockinghambrewing.com

D.A. LONG TAVERN Gourdy (taken from an offshoot of the pumpkin family), is a handsome beer with a deep orangeamber hue and generous off-white head that hangs around for a while. Spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and caramel malts greet your nose as you approach the glass. The mild hints of pumpkin in the taste are not overwhelming like some other fall beers whose names I will not mention. With a medium body and mildly sweet malt character, balanced by a 5.8% ABV and a slightly tart finish, Gourdy will gain your trust to finish the 22 oz bottles or 12 oz can it arrived in. Find all of Rockingham’s beers at Casen-Keg in Meredith and Laconia as well as oth-

er fine beer providers. BeerAdvocate.com samplers scored Gourdy between 3.5 and 4.1 out of 5. More recently, people on untapped.com seem to be more appreciative of Rob and Ali’s efforts, scoring in the high 4’s out of 5 stars. This reviewer gives it a 4.75 out of 5 since they are just a great brewery and fun folks to hang out with. This brew is a seasonal so grab one fast! Where’s The Beef?

by Steve White Contributing Writer

When people think about feeding backyard birds, the first thought is usually bird seed and water. These two ingredients are essential for attracting wild birds to your area, no matter where you may reside. However, another attractive food element that should be included in your offerings, especially during the winter months, is suet. There are many choices available in the suet marketplace for your backyard bird feeding needs. Plain, inexpensive beef suet can be found at your local supermarket or butcher shop. This is pure, unprocessed suet without any fillers or treats, such as peanuts, fruit or birdseed that you can purchase in prepackaged blocks. If squirrels raiding your suet feeders are a concern, then pure beef suet is your solution. Animals are attracted to suet due to the treats mixed in with commercially processed suet. Birds are attracted to the high calorie and fat content that all suet provides. You can also find pure beef suet in standard, square cakes at your local wild bird store if butcher shops are not located in your town. Rendered beef suet that you find on store shelves consists of wrapped cakes that are combined with fruits, nuts and birdseed for a wide variety of choices. Generally speaking, woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches and titmice prefer peanut butter or peanut based suet cakes. The very high fat content these products offer is very

appealing all year round. During spring and summer you can offer fruit based suet for your migratory birds. For instant, orange suet is the right choice to maintain an oriole presence in your backyard. The warm months may pose a concern for some regarding the offering of suet products. Pure beef suet sold in supermarkets should not be offered when outside temperatures reach 70 degrees or higher. The risk of spoilage is high and birds will ignore your offerings. Commercially processed suet is available in no-melt formulas that are manufactured not to drip or melt in high temperatures. Many customers believe that you should not offer suet in summer due to the risk of spoilage and lack of attractiveness to wild birds. The daily fat intake for your backyard birds should not be ignored by any serious backyard birder. You will attract more wild birds in the warm seasons if the right suet is available with your feeding stations. Mockingbirds, warblers, orioles, robins and catbirds are just some of the different species you can bring to your area with suet offerings. The suet feeder choices are just as plentiful as the suet cakes themselves. Wire baskets, mesh bags and suet logs can be used to dispense suet. Wire cages or baskets come in all sizes and shapes. You can recycle mesh onion bags to hold suet. Logs with correctly sized holes are an excellent way to offer suet in a more natural way. No matter what method you choose, consider suet to be as important an ingredient as bird seed when you wish to attract birds to your home. Choosing the right suet for your backyard is just as essential as the correct bird seed mix. It is possible to serve

suet all year and enjoy this wonderful hobby to the maximum. Have fun with your birds. Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve White is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls” with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. (StatePoint) Between strong winds, heavy rains, and threats like fire and natural disaster, simply having a roof over one’s head is not always enough. When choosing a strong

roof designed to protect your home and its occupants, here are some things to consider: Fire Prevention Real wood shake roofs can be extremely combustible and serve as kindling for wildfires. If you live in an area with even a remote possibility of wildfires, consider investing in a roof that resists flame spread. While no roof will resist a “ground up fire that engulfs the entire home, polymer roofing tiles that are installed with proper underlayments can help protect a home from wind-driven embers that can ignite the roof. indirect threats of tornadoes or hurricanes, or you simply live in a region that experiences strong storms, take note: flying debris associated with severe weather can become dangerous in high winds. Damage from airborne tree branches and flying loose items can be devastating to a roof not equipped for impact. Having a synthetic roof that has achieved the highest ratings on impact resistance tests can help protect your property. “Even if your roof has stood up to strong weather conditions in the past, it’s important to make sure it’s still in shape before the next round of bad weather hits, says Mark Hansen, See ROOF on 33 NH Master Electrician #4447

(BPT) - Call this the age of personalization. You can customize practically anything these days, from the kind of information you get on your favorite news feed and the offers you receive from your bank to the icons, background and sounds on your smartphone. Personalizing something really makes it feel more “yours,” so of course you want to be able to do that to your first home. If you’re shopping for your first home, you may already know what you want to do to personalize it. However, you may not be aware that certain features can make a home easier and more affordable to customize after you’ve moved in. For example, if you think you’ll need room to expand for a growing family down the road, it will be cheaper in the long run to buy a home with an attic or basement that you can finish into living space than to try and build on an addition

from scratch. As you’re shopping for your first home, keep in mind these elements that will help make it easier and financially feasible for you to make your new home truly your own: Architectural Bones That Are Right For You What’s your personal style? Do you favor a mid-century modern look? Art-deco? Craftsman? Colonial? It’s important to choose a home in a basic architectural style you love, because while you can affordably change the color and landscaping, it’s much harder to create a whole new look. Look for exterior features that play up the home’s architectural style, and then think of ways to customize them down the road. For example, simply painting the gingerbread trim on your Victorian style home in a different color can celebrate the look you love while making it your own.

The skylights close automatically in case of rain. You can also easily and affordably add more natural light to interior spaces like hallways and closets with Sun Tunnel tubular skylights, which can be installed by a handy DIYer in a few hours. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more. Room To Grow More Americans are living in multi-generational homes. Whether you plan to grow your family by having kids, moving your aging parents in with you, or adopting as many pets as you can fit in your house, you may find you’ll need more space in your new home before you’re ready to move out of it. Homes that have unfinished basements and/or attics will be easier to customize for your growing space needs. Converting an attic or basement into living space can cost much

less than having an addition built on your home and attics are perfect spaces to easily add light and fresh air with skylights or roof windows. A Price That Lets You Add Value Popular renovation and fixer-upper shows make it easy to understand the idea of finding a home at a price that will allow you to add value. A home that needs some renovation and upgrading will likely cost less than a comparable new home, but it also affords you the opportunity to extensively personalize your space. If you buy a home that needs work for a price well under your budget limit, you can use the extra money to invest in renovations that put your personal stamp on your home. In addition to customization for additional enjoyment, those upgrades will also allow you to instantly add value to your home.

Ask The Builder Dealing With Leaky Concrete Stairway by Tim Carter

DEAR ISABEL: Thanks for reaching out across the ocean for help with your problem. I’m fairly confident I can help you. First, let’s talk about the characteristics of masonry and concrete. Based on the enormous volume of email I receive from homeowners and builders, I have come to believe that many believe concrete, brick, stone, mortar and other similar materials are waterproof.

DEAR TIM: I live on the upper floor of a converted villa. The access is by a stairway at the side of house. There is a closed door for garden tools under the stairs. Water is coming in to the garden shed from above, and the wall near the stair is damp for about two feet. The owner below said he has damp internal walls consistent with water getting in from my stairs. I would like to prevent this happening. What can be done to stop the water infiltration, if anything? --Isabel H., Glasgow, Scotland

603-387-0015 —— 603-387-0026 The truth is water can pass through many, if not all these materials, albeit at radically different speeds. It’s child’s play for water to pass through tiny hairline cracks, and I see those in the high-resolution photo you sent to me. The steps that form the sloped roof for your garden shed are poured against the poured concrete foundation of the villa. This is a very common practice, as it would be prohibitively expensive to cast the steps as part of the poured foundation. It’s possible to do this but not practical. Think of the dynamics that are happening in a moderate to heavy rain storm that has wind as a component. Gal-

lons of water are hitting the stone walls of the villa and cascading down the walls to the hairline cracks where the steps meet the foundation wall. Wind blowing against the wall and steps adds more energy forcing water into the tiniest of openings or cracks. Since you can’t stop the rain and wind, you’ll need to do your best to stop the water from entering the cracks. It appears to me that someone has already made an attempt to do this by caulking the cracks on the flat stair treads. However, they did not caulk the cracks at the vertical interface where the stair risers touch the foundation walls. See BUILDER on 34

Examine the roof yourself or have a professional roofer assess for damage you may not be able to see from the ground. They can make repairs or recommend a new roof replacement. Durability No matter where you live, it’s important that roof tiles can handle wear and tear. Ideally, roof tiles should resist curling, fad-

ing, cracking, mold, algae, fungus and insects. Roofing products that come with a strong warranty can offer you peace of mind. Other Considerations Protecting your home and family should be your number one consideration. Luckily, durable synthetic roofing options abound that offer the authentic look of real wood or slate beauty, as well as environmental sustainability. For the benefits of an eco-friendly roof, it’s a good idea to seek out products that are completely recyclable and meet standards set by organizations like the Cool

Roof Rating Council and the U.S. Green Building Council. For a complete free guide on upgrading roofing to protect a home long-term, visit ThisOldHouse.netline.com. For an important, lasting home project, evaluate your roof and consider making an upgrade that will protect your house from everyday wear and tear, as well as the worst case scenario.

The repair job doesn’t look good to me, and I would seriously consider chipping off the caulk or whatever material it is. I’d then clean the foundation wall and steps well using a pressure washer. Yes, this is also going to cause water to enter the garden shed, but with luck it will be the last. You need the surfaces clean so the repair material bonds tenaciously. I’d be very tempted to chisel carefully along the joint between the steps and foundation to open up the gap to at least 3 mm or about 1/8 inch. This crack should be about 6 mm or 1/4-inch deep. Be sure to remove all loose material and dust. I’d then caulk it with a concrete epoxy that’s extremely strong and waterproof. I’ve used an epoxy with amazing results. It’s made by a company called PC Products and it’s available on Amazon. com. This epoxy comes many ways, but I prefer for jobs like this to use the caulk tube dispenser that automagically mixes the A and B components. Before you start to do this repair, I want you to do a test with the epoxy on some small concrete bricks that you can buy. Place one against the other so one is taller, recreating the relationship you have between the stair tread and foundation wall. The purpose of the test is to refine your caulking skills and to make the caulk match the existing concrete. It’s imperative that you study the concrete steps and take a closeup photo. You need to look at the size, color and makeup of the exposed sand grains in the concrete. Your job is to visit a local gravel and sand supplier to find similar,

if not exact, sand. When you look at the sand, and I can see it in the photo, you’ll notice black, orange, brown, white and other grains. You’ll use this sand to hide the stark gray epoxy. The epoxy I prefer comes out somewhat wet, and fresh sand will stick to it with no problem. Carefully apply a bead of epoxy, and then cover it immediately and completely with the sand. Be careful not to tamp the sand into the epoxy because you could smear it. Allow the epoxy to harden. This usually takes a few hours. Then sweep off the excess sand from your test bricks. See how it looks and hold it next to the existing steps. You may have to make several attempts to get the exact look and texture you want. Once you have all the cracks repaired where water is entering, then you need to apply a top quality silane/siloxane clear water repellent on the concrete steps, landing, foundation wall and the masonry walls of the villa above the garden shed. This final step will really help stop water from rusting your shovels, rakes and whatever else is the storage area. Good luck to you, and please report back your results. Need an answer? Is Your Clothes Dryer Energy Efficient? (StatePoint) If you are looking to be more energy efficient at home, you are in good company. Consumers nationwide are looking for new ways to reduce their energy use in their single-family homes, condominiums and apartments because using less energy helps save money and builds a more sustainable planet. Fortunately, great strides have been made in efficiency for major appliances that would have been unimaginable decades ago. One noticeable exception, until recently, has been clothes dryers. In 2012, the average electric clothes dryer used almost as much energy annually as the average refrigerator, dishwasher and clothes washer combined, according to a report from the National Resources Defense Council. Here are a couple of

things to consider that can help you select a sustainable dryer that also fits the design of your home. Review Ratings The most respected guide for sustainability in appliances is the Association for Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) Sustainability Standards. Before making its ratings, AHAM considers a broad range of product attributes, including energy and water efficiency, manufacturing and materials. AHAM just started providing standards for dryers. To check its free rating and review other resources, visit aham. org. Consider Ventless Dryers This relatively new type of dryer is changing the energy efficiency equation. Ventless dryers recycle air within the unit, and offer an ideal way to help reduce energy

consumption. They are also gentle on clothes, because they don’t heat the air as much as a traditional dryer. There are two types: condenser and heat pump. The most efficient are the heat pump dryers, which use a refrig-

eration system to dry and recycle air before returning it to the drum. Consumers can choose from two Whirlpool brand dryer sizes that range from a compact model to a 7.4 cu ft HybridCare True Ventless Heat Pump Dryer.

Ventless dryers have another major benefit. They can fit into spaces beyond the laundry room -- such as closets in condominiums and apartments -- because there’s no need for a vent, just an electrical outlet. With many home designs movSee dryer on 37

Four Questions Smart Homeowners Must Ask Remodelers (BPT) - If you’re like millions of Americans, you’re doing some sort of home improvement project within the next year. Have you thought about how you’ll select your remodeler? Don’t be wooed by beautiful before-and-after photos - they are created to grab your attention and impress you, but they don’t tell the whole story. For example, when you review a restaurant, you don’t base your rating just on the food. You expect an excellent experience, including a welcoming atmosphere and attentive service during the meal. Similarly, the overall impression of your remodeling project will be based on how you and your family were treated by the remodeling firm and its subcontractors from start to finish. You can take the first

steps toward a livable remodeling experience by asking your potential remodeler about what will happen during the project. Your home, in essence, will become a construction

zone for weeks, months or longer. During that time, you and your family could be mired in a dangerous dust bowl, weeks away from seeing your living area turn into the showplace you

envisioned. Here are four key questions to ask contractors about ensuring a livable remodeling experience: 1. What is the work schedule and projected timeline for this project? Agree on a working schedule that fits with your family’s lifestyle, but be willing to make modifications when necessary. Make sure the timeline includes project milestones as well as other important dates, such as when a utility will likely be disrupted or paint fumes could be bothersome. 2. What are the potential risks associated with this remodel? While no one can predict every obstacle that will arise on a job site, both remodelers and homeowners should take safety precautions and be prepared for setbacks. Find out what chemicals, materials, tools and other equipment will be used in your home and how they will be stored when not in use. Being aware of potential dangers is key in keeping your family safe.

3. What are your dust control practices? Exposure to small dust particles can cause serious health issues affecting both the lungs and the heart, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The threat is magnified when anyone in the home has breathing issues, allergies or other chronic conditions. Select a remodeler that follows dust control best practices, including isolating the work area, sealing vents and air ducts and establishing negative air pressure while maintaining proper ventilation. Ask if they use an air scrubber to collect and eliminate dust particles before they’re able to migrate throughout your home. 4. How can I help you? That’s right - you, the homeowner - can be a help or hindrance to the progress of the project. Find out what you can do to make it go as smoothly as possible. In addition to keeping children and pets away from the work area, try not to distract or hover over your remodeling team so that they can work safely and efficiently. A quick search online can provide insight on which top remodelers are in your area. As a homeowner, you also need to ask the right questions and communicate your specific requirements to the contractor, ensuring a smoother, more comfortable experience for everyone involved. See how you can work with your contractor to ensure livable remodeling by following these tips.

ing from traditional layouts with a laundry room to open designs, this allows a washer and dryer to be placed virtually anywhere in the home. The future of sustainability is often more simple than we envision. While smart technology sparks the imagination, valuable innovations will

focus on the tried-andtrue benefits of making appliances energy and water efficient, while maintaining a standard of high quality. Energy efficient solutions can not only meet expectations of resilience and sustainability, but also provide more options for homeowners and multifamily dwelling residents.

holster and a pistol at the scene. Lab results showed Scott’s fingerprints and DNA were on the weapon. It doesn’t necessarily mean he did anything wrong in this instance, but Scott also has a long rap sheet including weapons offenses, lending additional credence to the idea that he had a gun. These facts didn’t penetrate the Black Lives Matter narrative of the

Scott shooting. Such facts never do. The narrative is immune to complication or ambiguity, let alone contradiction. Every police-involved shooting of a black man is taken, ipso facto, to confirm that the police are racists. When the evidence in any particular instance makes it obvious that the narrative is a lie or a gross oversimplification -- e.g., in Ferguson or the Freddie Gray tragedy -- the movement simply moves on to the next case, as reckless as before. It is increasingly hard to deny that the movement is anti-police. When any evidence supporting the police is disregarded, and rioters hurl insults and objects at officers whose only offense is trying to maintain public order at a protest, the agenda is clear. After an event like Charlotte, a more responsible movement would keep the pressure on for more facts and wouldn’t indict police conduct without them. It would have a healthy skepticism about both the official version of events and the version of bereaved relatives. It would embrace peaceful protest as warranted, and avoid anything to bring discredit to itself or endanger wholly innocent police officers. But that movement would be something else entirely. In Charlotte, as in so many other places, it was riot first, and ask questions later. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

After the death of her husband, Frances became a Roman Catholic and her religious beliefs are reflected in her books. the Chinese government it’s an opportunity.” Beijing views the Canadian commercial chessboard as a plethora of opportunities for massive natural resource accession, trade, and a tariff free back door to the USA market. China is Canada’s second largest trade partner, right after the United States. The Canadian province of Alberta remains the third largest oil producer in the world; yet since the drop in oil demand and the shelving of the Keystone XL pipeline, the Western region has suffered huge job losses. People’s China is keenly interested in this massive oil producer. Beyond that the TransPacific Partnership trade deal being pushed by the Obama Administration, but now opposed by both Trump and Clinton, nonetheless does not envisage China as a member. To get around TPP, if it were eventually to pass in Washington, Beijing would do an end run securing an eventual Free Trade Agreement with Ottawa. Such a deal is part of the Golden

Decade Premier LI extols, but specifically would see a widening flow of Chinese exports to Canada which in turn through loopholes may get into the USA via NAFTA. People forget that the North American Free Trade Accord covers a free flow of commerce between the U.S. and Mexico AND Canada. In other words, even with possible tighter American restrictions on Chinese trade, Beijing could get its products into the USA tariff free via NAFTA. Notwithstanding trade policy, it’s the Trudeau government’s flawed political rationalizations over Beijing’s human rights policies which hinder a closer relationship between Canada and the People’s Republic of China. Canadians feel distinctly uncomfortable over this. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. have led to remarkably similar results among lower-class whites there. The riots of lower-class whites in London, Manchester and other British cities in 2011 were incredibly similar to black riots in Ferguson, Baltimore and other American cities -- right down to setting fire to police cars. One of the few bright spots for black children in American ghettos have been some charter schools that have educated these children to levels equal to, and in some cases better than, those in affluent suburbs. You might think that this would be welcomed by those who are so ready to do “favors” for blacks. But you would be dead wrong. Democrats who have been in charge of most cities with sizable black populations, for decades, are on record opposing the spread of charter schools. So is the NAACP. That is a de facto declaration of moral bankruptcy in both cases, just as in the case of the Ivy

League chemistry professor. In all three cases, it is a question of promoting one’s own special interests, while offering “favors” to blacks. The Democrats’ special interest is in serving the teachers’ unions, which oppose charter schools and support Democrats financially. The NAACP’s special interest is in serving the same donors -- and in keeping ghetto schools controlled by racial activists, as part of their turf. line. It seems revoltingly obvious that Hillary’s team is stoking racial tensions in hopes of scarfing up votes. Worst of all, the venom is directed at our men and women in blue who are heroically doing their jobs. Hillary Clinton needs to look in the mirror to her own party’s campaign of hate and division the next time she gins up a definition for “deplorable” behavior, but sadly, the mud slinging from her cesspool hasn’t even hit high gear yet. We must brace ourselves for many more disgustingly inappropriate Nazi comparisons and other unspeakably insulting tripe that will now accelerate, saturating the air waves and piling up in our mailboxes. But if she is interested in salvaging a touch of integrity, she could at least stop throwing our peace officers under the bus. Jim Buttolph Rumney, NH.
