COMPLIMENTARY

The Month Of Flaming Leaves As autumn begins to fade and the first hints of winter start to show their faces, we’d like to use our front page this week to celebrate the wonder of this colorful season that is passing. The colors of fall here in New England are celebrated across our great country and our world. The following article was written in the fall of 1944 and appeared in The New Hampshire Troubadour. Written by Mrs. Rollo B. Potter of

Acworth, NH., it is a letter to the New Hampshire troops fighting overseas during World War II to remind them of a piece of their home and wishing them a speedy return. We hope you will enjoy as well. October has pushed September back into the sea of memories and from the lofty elms clusters of yellow leaves are falling telegrams from the high places to tell See leaves on 8

Red blazes mark the trail as it enters the woods. The Summit Trail’s more moderate grades and its good foot bed are more enjoyable than hiking up one of the steep ski trails. The trail ambles up a rather mild first mile or so before it switchbacks up steeper terrain to the reach the top. On the way up there are a few good lookouts to

The top of the cliffs are 300 feet above the lake and can be reached via a path off the Lake Solitude Trail that connects the lake to Mount Sunapee’s summit or by way of the Andrew Brook Trail off of Mountain Road. Write In Candidate To The Editor: Where is Bob Hull? Hull, one of the two Republican Candidates who won, out of the three of us who ran, had bought his votes through advertising, is hiding somewhere. Hull spent thousands in advertising to buy 500 votes from people who “bought a product without ever seeing it from the five towns in lower Grafton County and nobody even knows what he stands for. Jeff Shackett and I didn’t spend a dime. The Republican party doesn’t know where he is, even after his victory in the Primary, Hull still has not reached out to the party. So who is this famous vote getter that no one has met? He is yet to get on the agenda for the select boards in Ashland, Alexandra, Bridgewater and Bristol, to introduce himself. In fact out of eight candidates ( five are from Grafton ) for Districts 9 and floterial 17, all these Select boards have been seeing at their meetings to date, is me. Introducing yourself to local government shows that you are willing to step up to take on the responsibility of proper chain of command representation for your district to Concord and County. Introducing yourself and listening to your constituents will give you an idea on how to represent your district and how to vote in Concord. Mr Hull, why are you hiding from your local government officials? What is it that you hope to accomplish for your constituents? Whoever they are. Are you going to ignore all of your constituents for the next two years while

Our Story

you sponge a seat in the House? The only thing I know for sure about Mr Hull is that he lives at 12 Liberty Lane in Grafton with 8 or 10 or 20 other people who use that address for voter registration. Tim Condon who challenged Jeanie Forrester for Senate District 2 is also listed at that same address. Condon moved from Florida to NH for the Free State Project and founded the now defunct, NH Legal Rights Foundation with Bill O’Brien, former speaker of the house. Condon and O’Brien were attorneys in a lawsuit against Grafton County brought by Hull, that delayed the construction of the new County jail. Is Hull on his way to Concord with the hopes of delaying more state jobs? Mr Hull, what kind of delegate will you be to Grafton County, for District 9, when you have tried to sue the County? This gets even better, on September 15th, the Grafton county GOP had a convention and Tim Condon who lost to Jeanie Forrester, showed up to announce Bob Hull. Is Condon going to show up in Concord to be sworn in for Hull too? Does Hull even exist? It’s air-apparent that Hull wants nothing to do with the Republican party or our government or you. Do you think that this kind of irresponsible behavior is worthy of your vote ? The Attorney General has an ongoing investigation which began in 2013 for voter fraud on all the people who are suppose to live at 12 Liberty Lane. As of Aug. 27th, there is a reported 10 See rottenecker on 27

Hodges Endorses Hurt for State Rep. To The Editor: I have known George Hurt for 16 years and I am enthused that George is stepping forward and choosing to run. George is known as a well respected businessman and that respect has earned him a reputation as a hardworking and trusted individual. His prior legislative experience representing Gilford will mean he will be able to hit the ground running. I understand Gilford and Meredith is combined as district #2 and the General Election hosts a few candidates for 4 seats. I am endorsing George because of his sincere commitment in finding a workable solution to the Belkanp County Corrections complex that all taxpayers of the county can support. I urge the voters in Gilford and Meredith to vote November 4th for George, Steve Hodges Former Belknap County High Sheriff Gilford, NH.

Watters Supported To The Editor: I have always admired the Prussian Army discipline of Democrat party members. They remind me of the Radio City Rockettes dance line kicking in synchronization. That discipline is a good thing when there is a great leader of the Democrat party, such as Harry – the buck stops here – Truman, or John – tax cuts lifts all boats – Kennedy. See mail boat on 27

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Final Campaign Push

Weirs Times Editor

This week I am making my last pitch to get your vote as I run for Governor under the banner of The Flatlander Party. Will this be my last try? I’m not sure. I have said that before and yet, like lemmings returning to the ocean to self destruct, I keep coming back. The next time there will be a governor’s race in New Hampshire, I will be sixty years old. Certainly not too old to run but perhaps a bit wiser to realize it really may not be worth it after all. Still, it will depend upon my financial situation. As you may know, I am really only trying to win the governor’s seat because it pays pretty good money. A hundred grand a year, which is more than I earn now. It is a really good deal. After all, you don’t have to really do anything except make speeches about what you want to do while waving your hands around a lot, like our present governor can attest to. Also, you get to keep the job for two years and can’t be fired, even if you stink at the job. In fact, if you are really lucky, you get four years out of it before people even realize that you have no clue to what you are doing. (One guy actually made it to eight years.) That’s four hundred grand. I don’t know about you, but I could do a lot with that money: pay off some bills, put some away

in this manner is insulting to all of them. Someone finally needs to treat them with the respect they deserve and I am going to be that guy. I will keep to myself so as not to insult your intelligence. Secondly, I really don’t have the funds the other candidates do to finish out this campaign, if I did, I’d surely be out there and to hell with the first reason. Obviously, this approach to campaigning is a last ditch effort, a final attempt to put myself in that enviable position of earning a hundred grand a year and not even having to show up if I don’t feel like it and still being paid. And I’m counting on you for your vote and your support. So, just remember, over the next two weeks, every time you turn on your television or radio and have to suffer through ad after ad of slanders and bloviating. Every time your favorite show is interrupted by another boring debate. Every time your mailbox is inundated with oversized mailers‌.it won’t be me. I am leaving you alone. So, I’ll sign off until Election Day, where even then you won’t be bugged by people with phony smiles holding signs for me. I promise. I figure that has to be worth something.

for retirement, and eat out at some expensive restaurants once in awhile (of course, that would be after I leave office, while I am in there I can do that with your money). So, if I lose again this year, I will have to reevaluate my position. Two years from now will I still have the desire to run? Will I have the stamina to stick it out for another campaign of mud-slinging? Will I feel that somewhere deep inside maybe I can make a difference for New Hampshire and make another sacrifice? Will I win the Powerball? All of these will have to be taken into careful consideration before I make up my mind. In the meantime, I will put everything I have into the last week and a half of this campaign season. I will treat it as if it is my last go round and do what I think will give me the best chance to win. That is exactly why I will do nothing from here to Election Day. I won’t make any public appearances, attend any debates, send out any mailers or buy any commercial time. I am going to do the opposite of what every other campaign thinks needs to be done to win. I’m counting on you to be so sick and tired of negative campaign ads, blathering speeches of insincerity and photo ops with groups who will be forgotten entirely once the election is over, that you will see me as a breath of fresh air. In fact, you won’t see me at all. I know this is a revolutionary idea and has never been done before, but I am doing it for a two reasons. First, I feel that the voters are smarter than all of that and that they can’t be fooled by false claims in commercials and phony campaign promises in speeches and to continue

YOU are NOT Welcome…

On October 15, the Anti-Second Amendment Traveling Road Show of “Americans for Responsible Solutions” arrived here by Jane in Concord. Cormier Former AriHooksett, NH. zona Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords brought this “show” to nine states, pressing the need for yet more gun-limiting legislation. After seeing an announcement regarding this event, Susan Olsen, Chair of the Women’s Defense League of NH, and yours truly, decided to attend the event. That is, TRY to attend. After being welcomed and seated, Tiffany Eddy of WMUR fame came over and introduced herself. We did likewise. And, two

minutes later, Ms. Olsen and I were shown the door. (Are we really THAT scary? YIKES!) Now, I suppose, in all fairness, this group has a right to ask us to leave. But, considering this specific “traveling show” was themed, “Protecting All Women”, we thought it would be possible to have some real dialogue amongst the 20-plus legislator/policy people attending this meeting. But, evidently this was a secret CABAL which included Zandra Rice Hawkins of Granite State Progress, some NH State Representatives and Senators, and judging from the parking lot, LOTS of out of state players. Maryland, NY, CT, MA, and NJ were but a few of the out of state license plates in the parking lot. Hmmm… However, the most concerning aspect of all this, is the fact that this meeting was quite obviously a group of NH See cormier on 30

The Centers for Everything But Disease Control So now the federal health bureaucrats in charge of controlling diseases and pandemics want more money to do their jobs. by Michelle Malkin Hmph. Maybe if they hadn’t Syndicated Columnist been so busy squandering their massive government subsidies on everything but their core mission, we taxpayers might actually feel a twinge of sympathy. At $7 billion, the Centers for Disease Control 2014 budget is nearly 200 percent bigger now than it was in 2000. Those evil, stingy Republicans actually approved CDC funding increases in January larger than what President Obama requested. What are we getting for this ever-increasing amount of money? Answer: A power-hungry busybody brigade of politicized blamemongers. Money, money, it’s always the money. Yet, while Ebola and enterovirus D68 wreak havoc on our health system, the CDC has been busying itself with an everwidening array of non-disease control campaigns, like these recent crusades: --Mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden appoints a 15-member “Community Preventive Services Task Force” to promote pet Nanny State projects. An obscure Obamacare rule -- Section 4003(b)(1) -stealthily increased the task force’s authority to study “any policies, programs, processes or activities designed to affect or otherwise affecting health at the population level.” Last year, the meddling panel extended the agency’s reach into transportation safety with a call to impose a federal universal motor-

cycle helmet law on the country. Is riding a Harley a disease? Why is this the CDC’s business? --Video games and TV violence. At Obama’s behest, in the wake of high-profile school shootings, the CDC scored $10 million last year to study violent video games and media images, as well as to assess “existing strategies for preventing gun violence and identifying the most pressing research questions, with the greatest potential public health impact.” Whatever that means. Why is this the CDC’s business? --Playground equipment. The CDC’s “Injury Centers” (Did you know there are 13 of them?) have crafted a “national action plan” and funded countless studies to prevent boo-boos and accidents on the nation’s playgrounds. Apparently, there aren’t enough teachers, parents, local school districts, and county and state regulators to police the slides and seesaws. Why is this the CDC’s business? -- “Social norming” in the schools. The CDC has funded studies and campaigns “promoting positive community norms” and “safe, stable, nurturing relationships (SSNRs)” in homes and schools. It’s the mother of all government values clarifications programs. So bad attitudes are now a disease. Again, I ask: Why is this the CDC’s business? After every public health disaster, CDC bureaucrats play the money card while expanding their regulatory and research reach into anti-gun screeds, anti-smoking propaganda, anti-bullying lessons, gender inequity studies and unlimited behavior modification programs that treat individual vices -- personal lifestyle choices -- as germs to be eradicated. Here’s a reminder of what the CDC does with money that’s supposed to go to real disease control.

You can keep your doctor. Family insurance premiums will be reduced $2,500. You will see significant reductions in the ranks of the uninsured. Cost curves will bend downward. My imaginary friend Mike spilled the glass of milk, not me. Okay, that last one was a child’s fib, but the rest were claims made by an adult: The President of the United States. Health policy ex-

perts pointed out the unbelievable nature of these promises at the time, but a majority of voters believed them then. A much smaller number still do. But those with eyes to see (eyes reddened perhaps after hours staring at an ObamaCare enrollment website) now recognize that the Democrat Party voted in lock-step to impose a program that has fallen far short of the promises. It’s time for accountability and correction. To start, we need to understand the nature of the mistake, identify who made it, and agree there’s a better path forward. Let’s start with the easy part - the “who.” The President, of course, but he had help. He had the dependable vote of our senior senator, Jeanne Shaheen, and he had an enabler in Gov. Maggie Hassan, who added NH to the rolls of Medicaid expansion states.

Musical Chairs & Suspense in Security Council Vote UNITED NATIONS —In its

annual round of diplomatic musical chairs, the General Assembly chose five new members for the by John J. Metzler coveted seats Syndicated Columnist on the Security Council, the UN’s most prestigious body. The new members, Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela begin their two year terms starting in January 2015. But beyond what even some diplomats see as an almost pro forma shuffling of the deck for the fifteen member Council, the seats are selected both for geographical balance and equity in the 193 member state world organization. In fact, the seats often reflect political influence as much as high stakes behind the scenes bargaining in regional blocs. Though the Council’s real power core rests with the permanent five P-5 members,China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, all of whom hold the powerful veto, there’s an

additional ten non- permanent members, five of which are selected annually. According to some wags, a campaign for such a seat costs up to $20 million but in the long run is worth it. Not only does the elected country gather higher profile globally with a place at the green felt table of diplomacy, but especially for developing states, is worth a treasure trove of economic development aid as a way to woo their votes. So let’s take a look at the continents, the players and the winners. Africa. Angola, a petroleum rich former Portuguese colony, was elected unopposed. Though still an authoritarian government lubricated both by petro dollars and corruption, Angola is not the socialist firebrand it was during the post-colonial era. As part of the Portuguese speaking, Lusophone world, Angola can be expected to be a team player with Portugal and Brazil. Asia/Pacific. Malaysia, a multiethnic moderate Muslim state ran unopposed for the Asian seat. Though an economic powerhouse, Malaysia has seen itself buffeted See Metzler on 26

Sen. Shaheen infamously echoed the president when she stated, “Under the current legislation, everyone will have the freedom to keep their healthcare plan if they like it.” Lie or grievous error: that call depends upon your charitable nature. But beyond the “fibs” that helped sell ObamaCare, it’s clear that the program is not as it was sold. Cost curves were to have bent downward, but according to a recent survey by Mercer, the cost of employer-based benefits will jump

significantly in 2015. To compensate, employers will change their plans and eliminate pay raises to offset benefit costs. In the individual market, a study by Brookings showed that insurance premiums “went up 24.4% beyond what they would have” had they followed preObamaCare trends. Changing plans often means changing networks, disrupting the doctor-patient relationship. The news has been full of reports of people unable to keep their docSee gorrell on 17

Irresponsible ‘Education’ Goddard College’s recent decision to have its students addressed from prison by a convicted cop killer is just one of many unbeby Thomas Sowell lievably irreSyndicated Columnist sponsible selfindulgences by “educators” in our schools and colleges. Such “educators” teach minorities born with an incredibly valuable windfall gain -- American citizenship -- that they are victims who have a grievance against people today who have done nothing to them, because of what other people did in other times. If those individuals who feel aggrieved could sell their American citizenship to eager buyers from around the world and leave, everybody would probably be better off. Those who leave would get not only a substantial sum of money -probably $100,000 or more -- they would also get a valuable dose of reality elsewhere. Nothing is easier than to prove that America, or any other society of human beings, is far from being the perfect gem that any of us can conjure up in our imagination. But, when you look around the world today or look back through history, you can get a very painfully sobering sense of what a challenge it can be in the real world to maintain even common decency among human beings. Living just one year in the Middle East would be an education in re-

ality that could obliterate years of indoctrination in grievances that passes for education in too many of our schools, colleges and universities. You could go on to get a postgraduate education in reality in some place like North Korea. If you prefer to get your education in the comfort of a library, rather than in person amid the horrors, you might study the history of the sadistic massacres of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire or the heart-wrenching story of Stalin’s man-made 1930s famine in the Soviet Union that killed as many millions of people as Hitler’s Holocaust did in the 1940s. Mao’s man-made famine in China killed more people than the Soviet famine and the Nazi Holocaust combined. And we should not deny their rightful place in history’s chamber of horrors to the 1970s Cambodian dehumanization and slaughters that killed off at least a quarter of the entire population of that country. What about slavery? Slavery certainly has its place among the horrors of humanity. But our “educators” today, along with the media, present a highly edited segment of the history of slavery. Those who have been through our schools and colleges, or who have seen our movies or television miniseries, may well come away thinking that slavery means white people enslaving black people. But slavery was a worldwide curse for thousands of years, as far back as recorded history goes. Over all that expanse of time and See Sowell on 26

You would, on these October days, find the view more extended and more beautiful than ever. The Great Artist’s hand guiding the brush of Jack Frost has completed a canvas, reminding one of a huge oriental rug of marvelous colors, covering the landscape. The blending of the flaming soft maples, the golden yellow of the graceful white birches with the dark green of the evergreens, and in the foreground the mass of crimson blueberry bushes, the flaming torches of the sumac, and one may even catch a touch of the orange bittersweet berries just popped open by the frost, their beauty against the old gray stone wall is beyond description. Should you chance to be at the top of the hill at sunset you will see the steeple of our grand old church, all pinky white as the setting sun hits it. This church is 123 years old, the highest church in all New Hampshire, and its architectural beauty as it stands with only the sky for its background, is worth traveling far to see, especially in the setting of an October day with the

green common in front and the brilliant foliage and blue of autumnal sky framing it. On the woodsy back roads one sees the reflection of the foliage and the white birches at “Chatt’s Pond, the screaming bluejays and crows, the red squirrels and chipmunks chattering as they busy themselves storing their supply of butternuts for the winter. In one old cellar hole not far from the village these busy and thrifty little fellows had filled boxes, rusty old pails, and cans with nuts. At a brook by the roadside I saw as many as fifty trout, or more, from four to ten inches long, huddled together in a shallow pond. Perhaps they too were holding a conference, even as Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin, making their plans for the days ahead when you boys are coming back to wander along the banks of these brooks once more. Possibly the trout were planning how best to elude the fascinating lures these boys will be casting into the pools - wet or dry flies, so realistic no trout feels quite safe when a Royal Coach, a Gray Hackle, or a Mickey Finn floats temptingly within an inch of his nose. Yes, all this beauty of New Hampshire will be unchanged when you return, which we sincerely hope will be before the falling leaves of another autumn turn cart-wheels on the lawn.

by Steve White Contributing Writer

During the cold winter months, wild birds expend scarce energy searching for unstable open sources of water. Water is an important element that all birds must use daily. Birds lack the saliva a human mouth contains to ease the act of swallowing food. This explains the constant behavior path wild birds employ as they continually flitter from your bird feeder to bird bath. The oil content of some seeds, such as sunflower seed, aid in the consumption of food, but water is the deal maker. Snow and ice may provide emergency sources of water, as well as impediments. Birds would have to consume large quantities of snow for their daily requirement. Chipping ice into manageable amounts is a wasteful use of energy that is necessary to survive the cold temperatures. Open sources of water such as moving rivers, outlets in lakes and ponds, melting ice puddles, etc are normal wild bird oases. Providing open sources of water in your backyard greatly increases the attractiveness to your songbirds. There are options available that will provide icefree water, simply and inexpensively. Birdbaths with built-in heating elements are the most popular with consumers. Screw on or clamp models attach to your deck or patio railings in close proximity to your outdoor electrical outlets. Look for features such as low

wattage, starting from 4060 watts, with a built-in thermostat. These models will regulate water temperature and only turn on when necessary to stop ice from forming. Pedestal designs with these features are also available. Properly designed models will provide open water in any New England weather, no matter how cold it gets. You can purchase separate deicers to install in your existing bird baths. These devices range in power from 40-250 watts. The greater wattage provides open water in even the most extreme winter conditions up to 30º below zero! Brrrr! It is easy to provide open water to your birds during the winter months for literally pennies a day. Place your heated bath in direct sunlight in order to avail yourself of the free solar energy. Birds only feed during the daylight hours, so why provide open water during the coldest times of the night? Our most popular heated birdbath allows you to simply dump the water and unplug the heated top before you bring into your house. In the morning, you place the top back unto the heavy duty metal ring already attached to

the railing, fill with water and plug it in. In this manner, your thermostatically controlled heating element is consuming energy sparingly yet wisely, pennies a day! This winter, consider the added benefit you can provide to your backyards through the use of heated water. Witnessing the pleasure of open water as your birds gleefully ring the edges of your bird bath is another enjoyable aspect of winter backyard bird feeding. Enjoy your birds! Rago & Garcia: A Great Education & Future for Our Descendants Recent radio guest and blogger Dick Morris had posted a segment: “Why has politics become sooooo by Niel Young partisan?” Advocates Columnist W h o a Richard, have you noticed that Harry Reid is no Bob Dole? For one of the few times that the Senate is controlled by the GOP, Bob Dole was always anxious to find out how the Dems felt about legislation. Republican Leader Cong. Bob Michel was another one who just appreciated “being there.” Perhaps Dick Morris is proposing “nonpartisan elections” across the country? Imagine, No party platform, never having to say you are sorry, I am sure many could not function in that world. No real need for me or Fox News. It would be just like “Animal Farm” – everyone is equal except some are more equal than others! ******** Two years ago I supported a fiscal (Libertarian) Republican from Laconia for the District Senate 7 seat during the GOP Primary. A couple of friends from Franklin supported their choice. The other team decided they would win with the politics of personal destruction. My guy wins primary, loses General Election! Did I ever mention that forgiving and forgetting does not come easy for me in politics? This time we are supporting Kathy Lauer- Rago who is the Republican nominee. Her opponent Andrew Hosmer shares the Democrat Party Line of keeping abortion for any reason, the Gay Agenda of taking away free speech, and of course, welfare and disability.

Kathy’s opponent places his children in a private Catholic School. Obviously he does not trust the Government Indoctrination Centers with his children. I commend him for his “choice”. Why did he vote to kill legislation that would have allowed NH businesses to contribute a portion of their taxes to scholarships for financially less fortunate families, so they could place their children in an alternative educational environment. Hosmer voted NO. And why is that same man using personal attacks against Kathy? He and his crew of intolerant Liberals make up headlines – you know, just like they are doing to Marilinda Garcia in CD2. Hosmer and his Liberal friends want to convince you that Kathy Lauer-Rago is against a woman making her own health care choices, is against Planned Parenthood, to allow employers and employees to reach agreements re: coverage. Hosmer signs off with “our values at work”. Abortion is not about a value, it is about life, and yes, death. Kathy Rago is for a reasonable and honest state budget, being business friendly to old and new businesses, opposes a state sales and income tax, is watchful of “empire building” in state government. Kathy is a more than a 2 issues candidate. ******** For the most part, NH politics can be very interesting. My ward is one of the worst for turnout in primaries and general elections in Laconia; local, state, and national. This is a primer for my opposition to Amendment 6 which will reduce the choices for office, and for the voters. ******** There will be Charter Amendments on the bal-

lot for consideration by Laconia voters. It is my opinion that this goes back to 1989, the year that the “Straight Arrows” were elected as a majority on the City Council. Being out of power for two years both the Democrats and Republicans for our partisan elections, which I liked – being the first Independent elected to the Council in November 1973 – the two parties formed the “Unity Party”. The goal was to have one name, the same name, winning both the Democrat and Republican primaries for mayor and ward councilor. So I came out of the mothballs to run once again for city council – as an Independent! I was determined that the Unity Party would NOT knock me off from the ballot. I guess that as the winner, defeating the person who had “won” the nomination of both parties, means that I was the first and second person to be elected as an Independent to the city council. The latest from Laconia City Council are some City Charter Amendments. I will be doing radio programs to inform Laconia voters regarding Amendment 6. I call it the incumbent protection Act. ******** “Freedom is an indivisible word. If we want to enjoy it, and fight for it, we must be prepared to extend it to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, whether they agree with us or not, no matter what their race or the color of their skin.” -- Wendell L. Willkie (1892-1944) Republican presidential candidate, 1940 Source: One World, 1943

An American flag perched on the summit cairn of Silver Mountain in Lempster, NH, greeted me on the summit. A short hike, under a mile, up a nice gradual well marked trail has gorgeous views from Silver’s ledgy summit. The mountaintop and trail are in the Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. patenaude from 3

the west. At the summit lodge, we climbed the stairs to its upper deck and enjoyed the full panorama. We lucked out with a clear day we could see far into Vermont. From near the top terminus of the Sunapee Express lift we could see all the way north to Mount Washington and the many peaks in between.

On our way to the Lake Solitude Trail, we slowly walked by the construction crew hard at work installing a high-speed quad chairlift that is replacing the Sunbowl lift. I am excited to ski and I bet this is going to make the Sunbowl the most popular place on the mountain this season! After crossing the bumpy ridge, we took the spur trail to the top of White Ledges,

The Mount Sunapee Resort’s Sunbowl high-speed quad chairlift is well under construction and will be ready for this coming winter! Those new towers are just waiting for the new cable and chairs to be strung up! The 4,300 foot lift, manufactured by POMA of America, will cut the ride time to the summit by more than half to just over 4 minutes. Mount Sunapee is a New Hampshire State Park and the ski area, Mount Sunapee Resort, since 1998 has been leased and operated by Tim and Diane Mueller.

high above Lake Solitude. We joined a few other hikers relaxing on this lovely cliff. The impressive rock face tops out at 300 feet above the small lake and is only slightly lower than Sunapee’s summit elevation. We followed the blue blazes down the Andrew Brook Trail and we passed a few people making their way up the trail. We en-

joyed the forest and we easily hopped on rocks to cross the brook many times along the way. Our point to point route was about 5.5 miles. The distance from Andrew Brook to White Ledges is about 2 miles one-way and is a popular destination on its own. My next after work outing was a solo trip up Silver Mountain. Bryan had told

me about this small but bold bald peak in Lempster, NH. Silver Mountain is located in The Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest and its 1,826 acres are conserved by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF has a nice map on their website). These lands were acquired just four years ago in 2010. See patenaude on 16

tors, even specialists in the middle of treating deadly diseases. So much for a Shaheen promise. By expanding our Medicaid program, Gov. Hassan fatally burdened future state budgets. She supported the fiction that taking federal money with strings attached is a winning strategy. NH is one of 40 states described as a “net payer under expanded Medicaid, with costs greatly outpacing savings over the long term. We will reach a fiscal breaking point but will never reach the expansion’s stated goals. Underfunded education and infrastructure programs or a broadbased tax may be Hassan’s legacy. Expanded Medicaid was supposed to reduce emergency room visits; patients with access to a doctor’s office wouldn’t routinely use the ER. That didn’t happen in Massachusetts under “RomneyCare and it isn’t happening under ObamaCare. ER visits have increased 3 times more in Medicaid expansion states than non-expansion states. Our governor’s budgetbuster is a medical-delivery bust, too. How about the idea that, whatever its faults, ObamaCare will at least dramatically reduce the ranks of the uninsured? Wrong, again. Government data conflict on this: Census Bureau reports the uninsured grew by 1.3 million, while the Centers for Disease Control show a small reduction. But much of that reduction came from making more people dependent on medical welfare, i.e., Medicaid, rather than from employer- or individually-purchased plans. Unfortunately, studies show that increased Medicaid coverage generated no significant improvements in health outcomes, but did increase use of health care services. Broken promises, failed predictions, breaking budgets, higher costs imposed on businesses and individuals – welcome to the “vicious circle. Health policy writer John Graham wrote on the National Center for Policy Analysis Health Policy blog that ObamaC-

are “depresses economic growth, making more people dependent on ObamaCare. More government dependence is what Sen. Shaheen and Gov. Hassan have brought down on us. While there’s no shame in admitting to a mistake, neither of these elected officials have done so. November gives us the opportunity to hold elected

officials to account, and to make the necessary corrections. It’s time to replace the fibbers and the wrong-headed with people who will honestly and correctly guide us down a new path. Ken Gorrell is a smallbusiness owner who lives in Northfield.

DEAR BECKY: Your problems sound much like a house under construction in my own town. I drive by it going to the post office and grocery and grimace each time I see the window in one gable that’s at least a foot off center. The good news is the problems you describe are easy to fix at this point. Let’s tackle the off-center window issue first. Believe it or not, if I were

DEAR TIM: I’m having a house built and I’ve got some problems. It’s still in the rough stage, with just the rough framing pretty much complete and the roof on. I’m noticing all sorts of mistakes, such as a window that’s not centered, and my metal woodstove chimney looks like it’s been put in by a 6-year-old child. The roof adjacent to the chimney is a mess. Can these defects be fixed easily? What’s involved? Work has stopped on my house and my builder is unresponsive. What would you do with winter closing in? Please help me. --Becky P., Holderness, New Hampshire

The off-center window above the door and the chimney disaster at the roofline may be part of a severe systemic problem with the builder. there and had my tools with me, it would take about an hour to correct this. It’s much harder to do if there are wires, siding, fiberglass insulation and drywall to contend with, but in your case none of that is in the way. All that the builder or carpenter needs to fix the issue is a few wall studs and possibly a scrap of exterior wall sheathing. If he can get up on a ladder and pull out the nails holding the sheathing to the wall studs, he’ll not even wear out a metalcutting Sawzall blade. One way to fix this er-

design, build or remodel your dream home

ror is to simply leave the entire window framing in place as one unit and just cut it free from the top and bottom plates. I’ve done this on several occasions and it’s quite simple to do. The key is to have all the nails pulled from the exterior sheathing that are nailed into the vertical and horizontal framing members that surround the window opening. Once these are pulled, the carpenter takes a reciprocating saw with a long metal-cutting blade and saws between the tops and bottoms

of the vertical framing members and the top and bottom wall plates. When all nails are cut, the entire frame will be free. It can be tapped in place with a four-pound hammer so it’s centered. Once you verify it’s in the correct place, you install new nails connecting the framing to the top and bottom wall plates and then install new nails through the exterior sheathing into the wall studs. There will be a hole in the sheathing you’ll have to patch and you’ll have to cut some of the sheathing out that’s now overhanging the window opening in the framing. This is a very simple task for a carpenter. The chimney issue is a bit more complex. I would take good photos of the roof where the chimney is located. Take other photos of where the metal chimney is next to the house, too. Take these to one or two local woodstove shops and talk with the owner or general manager. Ask them if they can tell from

the photos if the chimney has been installed correctly. They may have to visit the job site, but it will be worth it if you have to pay them. When tubular metal chimneys go up alongside a house, they can often be equipped with angled pieces that allow the chimney to angle past a roof overhang. I’d explore this option, as it virtually eliminates the possibility of future roof leaks. The woodstove shop owner or general manager will know of installers that can fix what’s there now. You may have to go this route if your builder has decided to pull off the job. With winter coming, it’s important to ensure the house is weathertight. Get the roof fixed and try to get a weather barrier on the exterior walls if possible. If you can get the exterior completely buttoned up with the siding, windows, doors and so forth complete, that would be ideal. You can’t really think of finishing the interior until you’re sure the struc-

ture is weatherproof. All wall insulation and wall, ceiling and floor finishes must protected from any rain and blowing snow that may penetrate a wall. You need to turn up the heat on your builder to find out what the plan is. If he won’t return your calls, see about contacting the places where he buys materials. See if he’s gone dark with the suppliers, too. If you discover he’s on the run, it’s time to talk with a contract attorney to find out what rights you have to take over the job and keep it moving. Moreover, Malaysia’s strong commitment to UN peacekeeping operations has gained friends. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela garnered the Latin seat. Despite being blocked by the Bush Administration in 2006 with a withering 48 ballot knockdown contest, this time the Caracas government won unopposed. cent years and especially during the rule of the late Hugo Chavez, the country has descended deeper into poverty and social conflict. Venezuela replaces Argentina on the Council. Both Angola and Venezuela have dismal human rights and media freedom records. In each of the above cases a secret ballot guaranteed a vote for picking one out of one choice. West European and Others This was the true political contest: select two out of three candidates. New Zealand, a founding member of the UN was superbly qualified for the seat and won. When it comes to humanitarian aid and peacekeeping missions, New Zealand is one of the global good guys. Their election, putting them back in the Council for the first time in 20 years, is richly merited. New Zealand replaces Australia whose two-year stint was indeed impressive during these trying times. Spain also with strong UN credentials has been a powerful supporter of the organization; during the past 25 years almost 140,000 Spanish troops have served in UN peacekeeping missions. Spain strongly backed by the European Union, won. Turkey, posed a more problematic choice. Though the Turks have played a helpful and hospitable humanitarian role for Syrian refugees, the Ankara government has been mired in the vortex of Mideast politics. Equally the country’s Islamic-lite government has tilted the political balance away from Turkey’s formerly staunchly secular political model. Many UN delegates remain quietly nervous about what is seen as the creeping authoritarian in President Erdogan’s Turkey. So what does this mean for U.S. Policy? Angola replaces Rwanda; negative. Malaysia replaces South Korea; slight loss. Venezuela replaces Argentina; negative. New Zealand replaces Australia; even. Spain replaces Luxembourg; even. space, it is very unlikely that most slaves, or most slave owners, were either black or white. Slavery was common among the vast populations in Asia. Slavery was also common among the Polynesians, and the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere enslaved other indigenous peoples before anyone on this side of the Atlantic had ever seen a European. More whites were brought as slaves to North Africa than blacks brought as slaves to the United States or to the 13 colonies from which it was formed. White slaves were still being bought and sold in the Ottoman Empire, decades after blacks were freed in the United States. What does all this mean? In addition to the chilling picture that it paints of human nature, it means that Americans today -- all Americans -- are among the luckiest people who have ever inhabited this planet. Most Americans living in officially defined poverty today have such things as central air-conditioning, cable television, a microwave oven and a motor vehicle. A scholar who spent years studying Latin America said that what is defined as poverty in the United States today is upper middle class in Mexico. Do we still need to do better? Yes! Human beings all over the world are not even close to running out of room for improvement. There is so much knowledge and skills that need to be transmitted to the young that turning schools and colleges into indoctrination centers is a major and reckless disservice to them and to American society, which is vulnerable as all human societies have always been, especially those that are decent. So this sounds like sour grapes from the guy who lost his bid for the primary, I would not mind if I had lost to someone who would do the better job, I’d even endorse that person, but with the ongoing absence of Hull refusing to make contact with anyone in this district, and why he wants the

Many Dover citizens were concerned not only by this forced charity on behalf of children from a far off land, but also because these children could bring infectious diseases from Africa into our schools. At that time, the first Ebola cases were being reported. Many Dover Citizens came to a city council meeting last summer and voiced their objections concerning Dover being a potential point of entry of Ebola into New Hampshire. Fortunately this program, initiated with good intentions, was placed on hold by ORIS following our objections. At that time, Dover’s State Senator David Watters was in support of this program.

I know Hull is a free-stater who would like to do away with the US Constitution, the same Constitution I had held up my right hand and sworn an oath to defend, both foreign and domestic, when I joined the Navy. I have served five tours to the Middle East, and I refuse to stand by while people are willing to vote someone into

My parents were strong supporters of those inspiring and skilled Democrat Presidents. However, the ballet like discipline of the current Democrat cadre has resulted in destruction of our country – led by an inexperienced and unfocused Democrat president such as Barack Obama. In Dover, we recently just escaped financial and medical chaos. Last summer, Dover municipal officials were approached by the Federal Office of Refugee Settlement (ORIS). Our State Department selected Dover to absorb up to 500 political refugee children from the Congo for resettlement. Dover was informed that ORIS would provide funds to partially offset the increased school and lodging costs to Dover taxpay-

In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead, apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more, The Washington Post found. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices. The CDC also misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research. As I pointed out years ago,

Progressives and out of state “players” who gathered to pound out yet more NEW HAMPSHIRE gun legislation. Closed meetings with out of state “players” cannot bode well for our state of NEW HAMPSHIRE. Remember now, this legislation will come under the header of “Protecting All Women” (yet another canard with a “Women’s Label”– UGH) asking for more restrictions and more background checks. “Americans for Responsible Solutions” is also purchasing big time television ads to run against Guinta and Garcia here in NH trying to convince voters in NEW HAMPSHIRE we need to be afraid. Ooooh, guns bad. Oh, pleeeease. The truth is women are the fastest growing demographic of gun owners in America. These women are educated and confident in their 2nd Amendment rights. They are not, and will not be-

come, victims. Embracing our rights to defend ourselves makes women more powerful and is the TRUE feminist message. A gun is a great equalizer and polling proves New Hampshire citizens know this. So, while the members of this “guns bad” CABAL will continue to meet behind closed doors to find ways to frighten people about guns and gun ownership, we in NEW HAMPSHIRE have to remain strong in our commitment “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”, continues to mean, “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”. Any candidate who seeks to weaken our 2nd Amendment rights should be sent a message they will LOSE their election here in NEW HAMPSHIRE. Yes, indeed. It is THEY that will not be welcomed here in our Live Free or Die state. And, this is as it should be!
