Flag Carried During Liberation Finds Home At Wright Museum

One of the most exciting events at a museum takes place behind the scenes with artifact donations. Recently, staff at the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro experienced just such an event, as they received a small American flag that was car-

ried through the streets of Paris in August 1944 when it was liberated. The flag, according to Executive Director Mike Culver, was signed by several soldiers, including Carl Rosa who kept it. “The flag was donated by Cynthia and Michael Lawson after Rosa passed

away in September 1994 in Connecticut,” he said. On the flag, there is written the following text: This flag rode through the streets of Paris, Aug 25, 44. Carried by the 3rd Sect. Willie E. Boles, Tenn; Henry E. McGouttry, Mass; Morris V Gray, See FLAG on 39

The Lakes Region Detachment of the Marine Corps League will celebrate the 20th Annual “Gathering of Marines” on Saturday, November 10th at 7pm at the Laconia Country Club, 607 Elm Street, Laconia, NH. The annual event commemorates the 243rd birthday of the founding of the United States Marine Corps at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 10th, 1775. Each year Marines, old and new, from WWII to those now on active duty throughout the world celebrate the occasion which is unique among all the branches of the military services. A presentation of the Colors occurs, the National Anthem, and a salute to all branches of the services are conducted. The “Commandant’s Birthday Letter” is read and the traditional “cake cutting” ceremony in which the first and second pieces are given to the youngest and the oldest Marines in attendance. Recognition is also rendered to any special attendee who has been awarded honors for his or her service to the Marine Corps. This year’s special guest of honor will be

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Brenda With An “N”

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Brendan is off campaigning this week, so we are reprinting this updated column from 2010 in a feeble attempt to help along his struggling campaign. Election Day 2018 is a couple of weeks away and that means a very significant change in the way we live is about to take place. No more political ads. There have been so many of the darned things on television for the past months, pushing aside other commercials, that I have forgotten what it is I need to buy in order to make myself happy. If you have been paying attention, you may have noticed that I haven’t had many campaign ads on radio or television in my run for governor, In fact, I’ve had none. I don’t have enough funds in my war chest to produce one, let alone have it replay hundreds of times a day. Because of this, a lot people come up to me on the street and ask me if I am running this year. I explain that, even though you won’t see my name on the ballot, I am running as a write-in candidate and they will have to write my name on the ballot in order to vote for me. (Of course, it has to be in the box designated for write-in candidates. Just anywhere on the ballot won’t fly.) For those of you who plan to do so, I do appreciate your vote. I am the only one running who is

named Brendan. So, even though it seems an easy task to write my name in, I just ask that you make sure to spell my name correctly. If you have been with me all of this time and are now ready to see this real Flatlander sitting on the big chair in the State House, just remember that all of our hard work will be for naught and our message lost if you screw up and spell my name wrong. Please remember that it is Brenda with an “N.” A lot of people get my name wrong and spell it “Brandon” or even “Brendon.” I am not saying that there is anything wrong with these names; it’s just that I know, through minutes of research, that there are a few people named Brandon Smith living in New Hampshire. I would hate to have one of them, or all of them for that matter, wake up on November 7th and find out that they have been elected governor of New Hampshire. After all, not everyone wants the job. I am doing my best to get the message out there but, as I mentioned, I have limited funds and I have to come up with unique methods for getting voters to remember how to spell my name correctly. I do have volunteers willing to stand at traffic intersections, holding signs for me and waving at passing motorists. Since I can’t afford signs they just stand there and yell: “It’s Brenda with an ‘N.’” Being late October, not many people are driving with their car windows open so the message isn’t quite getting out there as much as I had hoped. Still, I do appreciate the effort. We have been using the phone call method. Perhaps you have received

one of our phone calls just as you were preparing to sit down to a nice family dinner. “Good evening sir/madam, are you planning on voting in the upcoming election for governor?” “Yes.” “Can you tell me what is the most important issue to you in this election? Is it taxes, jobs or social issues?” “Taxes.” “Do you know how to spell Brendan?” “Yes. B-R-A-N-D-O-N.” “Actually, it is Brenda with an ‘N.’” “Good. Thank you for clarifying that. It is good to know.” “You are welcome.” I have found that door to door campaigning can be very effective when you don’t have money to mail out those giant postcards. “Hello, I am Brendan Smith and I am running for governor.” “Of New Hampshire?’ “Yes, and I’d appreciate your write-in vote. I just ask that you spell my name correctly. It’s Brenda with an ‘N.’” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “I would have gotten that wrong. Thank you.” “My pleasure.” Will any of this work? Who knows? I just keep my fingers crossed and hope people get the message. Thanks in advance for your vote and for spelling my name correctly. If elected I promise to do my best to earn my $100,000 a year. After all, I’ll need it for the next election. (Of course, if I win Megamillions the whole campaign is off.) Brendan is the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles” and “Best Of A F.O.O.L. Benefit Concert

To The Editor: As a new member of the 400-strong New Hampshire House of Representatives, I wondered about making a difference amidst such numbers. Rep. Tim Lang (R-Sanbornton) showed me the way. I met Tim when he volunteered to assist the Veteran’s Caucus put together a legislative charity softball game for the homeless. He jumped in to help make the first two Legislative Softball Classics major successes, bringing together Republicans and Democrats to raise almost $25,000. (And he showed great speed and hitting ability as well!) I learned my new friend was on the powerful Ways and Means committee---unusual for a first-term representative, as that committee usually consists of more experienced reps. Then in 2018, Rep. Lang was made Committee Clerk, one of four leadership positions. Very impressive! Tim is very knowledgeable re: tax policies and legislative procedures. He’s authored numerous amendments to fix bills needing constitutional or mechanical fine tuning--bills that later became laws. He’s unafraid to speak on the House floor to explain or advocate for bills and is wellrespected as an influential legislator---one capable of swinging votes. I hope the voters of Sanbornton and Tilton will reelect this good man. New Hampshire is a better place with Rep. Tim Lang in Concord.

To The Editor; I support Kathy Rago’s campaign for the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Northfield, Franklin Ward 3, and ask you to do the same in this very important election. I have personally known Kathy for 16 years and have always admired her work ethic, fearlessness, and genuine concern for families and children. She has been an advocate for education, especially for children with needs that go beyond what the public schools can provide. She knows that everyone needs the best opportunities available and has tirelessly pursued measures that provide alternatives such as public charter schools and tax credit funded scholarships for lower-income families. Besides her education expertise, Kathy Rago is a CPA and, as a conservative, believes strongly that government should operate within its means, just as the taxpayer has to do. Kathy is always willing to listen to the concerns of the community and is solution oriented. Kathy never fails to look outside the box for alternative solutions to any problem or issue. Kathy Rago is one of the most capable people I have seen run for the New Hampshire House of Representatives and is deserving of your vote.

To The Editor: On October 27th at the Meredith Community Auditorium at the Interlakes High School one of the country’s top folk rock trios, Gathering Time, will perform the best songs from the 1960’s along with some of their original music. This award-winning group will bring you back to those times of your youth, and if you are too young to remember that period, they will paint a musical picture of those times of social unrest and change. They will feature music of the Byrds, Peter Paul and Mary, Crosby, Still, and Nash, Joni Mitchell, in addition to many more artists of that special time. The concert will benefit Central NH VNA and Hospice and the doors will open at 7:00 PM with a whole array of baked goods as well as cheese and cut vegetable platters. The food and soft drinks are included in the $27.50 purchase price for each ticket. More information and to purchased tickets, go to www. tbinh.org It has been said of Gathering Time that if they were born 40 years earlier and Peter Paul and Mary, born 40 years later, it would be Peter Paul and Mary singing the songs of Gathering Time. They are a group, and this is a concert, not to be missed. Tickets are available at www.tbinh.org.

of German spies, French collaborators, an American infantryman, or a recently liberated Frenchman? Dealing with the murder in a war zone is difficult, but Billy is also concerned with the retribution against the collaborators both actual and assumed and with the mystery of the young, nearly catatonic woman who may have witnessed Jerome’s murder. The trio follows various leads, but nothing seems to fructify. It comes as no surprise to those of us who have followed Billy as he’s made his way in the theaters of war that the Billy of 1942 is not the Billy of 1944, nor is Kaz or Big Mike. As many writers have expressed in many ways, “war changes men.” Billy in 1942 was recklessly trying to track down a killer in the middle of a war op-

Solemn Graves by James R. Benn is the thirteenth Billy Boyle World War II Mystery and it is outstanding. The characters old and new are in sharp focus. The plot is unique, complicated and satisfying. The dialogue is sharp and true. The writing is rich and emotive. Normandy, just weeks after D-Day, is a place of desolation and despair. Fields, orchards and villages have been torn apart by bombs. Livestock lie dead next to the road. Troops, driving carefully to avoid dust which might alert the enemy, are never far from the action as they make their way through pastures and hedgerows toward the next engagement. The newly liberated are vengeful against those among them who collaborated with the enemy. The countryside, the people of Normandy, and the troops are worn and weary. Amid the carnage and destruction Captain Billy Boyle, and his friends and fellow investigators, Kaz (Lieutenant Piotr Kazimierz) and Big Mike (Staff Sergeant Mike Miecznikowski), arrive in Bricqueville to inves-

eration. Billy in 1944 investigates with eyes wide open, always aware that “dust means death.” Kaz, who lost his entire family when the Nazis invaded Poland and his fiancé during his first assignment with Billy, has found a shred of hope in the ravages of war and isn’t quite as willing to play chicken with whatever bullet or bomb is flying, but he’s lost none of his courage or his disgust with the abomination of war. Big Mike, seemingly the most uncomplicated of the three inves-

Sinking SleazeBob Menendez T h e metaphors don’t get any better (or worse) than this: A van carrying Hillary Clinton, by Michelle Malkin f r e s h f r o m Syndicated Columnist throwing her #MeToo sisters under the bus this weekend, crashed into a parking garage pillar on the way to a New Jersey campaign fundraiser Tuesday for beleaguered Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez. At her side was Huma Abedin, who is divorcing convicted serial sexter and underage girl stalker ex-Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident. But politically, damaged goods plus damaged goods equals an epic car wreck. Tone-deaf Clinton had just earned recriminations from the left’s resistance wing for defending her horndog hubby on “CBS Sunday,” where she flatly denied that the 49-year-old commander in chief’s Oval Office sexcapades with 22-year-old intern Monica Lewinsky were an “abuse of power” because, well, “she was an adult.” This is the same fauxminist champion who sidled up to disgraced Hollyweirdo Harvey Weinstein despite warnings from entertainment industry insiders about his alleged sexual predation of young starlets that reportedly dated back to 2008. Question: Who could have possibly thought it a good idea for Hillary and Huma to front a women-themed party for SleazeBob Menendez? Answer: only a conglomerate of liberal hacks and flacks with

more blind spots than the Land of the Cyclops. The powerful pol, running for a third term in the U.S. Senate, is up to his eyeballs in personal and professional skeeviness: --Menendez flew the crony skies on multiple luxury flights to the Caribbean with wealthy donor pal Salomon Melgen on taxpayer dime and time. --Sleaze-Bob in turn used his Senate influence to push a lucrative port security deal benefiting Melgen. --Creepy doctor Melgen was convicted of bilking sick old people on 67 counts of massive Medicare fraud totaling $90 million. --And in my favorite mendacious Menendez-engineered scheme, which I dubbed the 36DD visa program, Menendez and his staff pressured the State Department to expedite the foreign tourist and student visa approval processes for a bevy of buxom foreign beauties. As I previously reported, one of them, Brazilian actress and porn pinup star Juliana Lopes Leite (aka “Girlfriend 1”), had her F-1 student visa application moved to the top of the pile in 2008 after Menendez and his staff intervened as a favor to model-lovin’ Melgen. --Another 36DD visa beneficiary, Rosiell Polanco-Suera, testified that her rejected visa application (along with her sister’s) received reconsideration and instant approval after Melgen promised to “fix it” by reaching out to Menendez. And that’s all on top of the sordid and unresolved mess involving Obama Justice Department court filings related to the “specific, corroborated allegations that defendants Menendez and Melgen had sex with underage prostitutes in

Democrats Know They Can Always Count On The Media This week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, DMass., in preparation for a 2020 presidential run, decided to fight back against President Trump’s by Ben Shapiro brutal nickSyndicated Columnist name for her: Pocahontas. Trump, you’ll recall, labeled her Pocahontas because for years, she has claimed Native American ancestry. Not only that, she claimed repeatedly that her mother’s Native American ancestry drove her parents to elope after her father’s family refused to welcome her mother with open arms thanks to their bigotry. As it turns out, Warren could never provide any evidence of Native American ancestry -- even though she spent years labeling herself Native American while at the University of Pennsylvania Law School as well as Harvard Law School. On Monday, Warren decided she’d had enough. She released

a video of her family members discussing her claims of Native American background. “Native communities have faced discrimination, neglect and violence for generations,” Warren intoned. “And Trump can say whatever he wants about me, but mocking Native Americans or any group in order to try to get at me? That’s not what America stands for.” She accompanied that video with her supposed proof of Native American background: an analysis by professor Carlos Bustamante of Stanford University in which he explains that it is possible that Warren had a Native American ancestor anywhere from six to 10 generations ago. That would have made her anywhere from 1/64 to 1/1,024 Native American. The study was based not on Native American DNA but on Mexican, Peruvian and Colombian DNA. In fact, not even Cherokees were happy with Warren. In a stunning rebuke, the Cherokee Nation released a statement

UN Human Rights Council Charade UNITED TIONS -

NA-

In a riveting election for new members of the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly by John J. Metzler voted for 18 Syndicated Columnist new members. Yet, given that all prospective candidates were unopposed, the perfunctory ballot simply selected a list of states where everyone won, including some notorious human rights abusers. The episode evoked a Kafkaesque irony. And it clearly underlined why the United States chose to leave the 47-member Council this past June. U.S. UN Ambassador Nikki Haley called the Genevabased Council a “cesspool of political bias.” While unopposed seats are common among the Council’s five regional groups, what delegates politely call a clean slate, the reality emerges that these annual elections are really selections. Naturally, the usual political considerations of consensus, availability and presumed qualifications are sorted out behind the scenes. Sadly in recent years, “done deals” have stifled any hint of competition or dissent opinions. “Yet this year there is not even the illusion of competition,” laments Hillel Neuer of the respected Geneva-based UN Watch. Neuer added that sadly the UN will be “rubber-stamping the election of

Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Eritrea, the Philippines and Somalia, even though these regimes systematically violate the human rights of their own citizens…and consistently frustrate UN initiatives to protect the human rights of others.” So here’s the new lineup for states gaining three-year terms starting in 2019. Africa: The new members include Burkina Faso, Togo, Cameroon, Somalia and Eritrea. Sadly, the African continent has suffered the wrath of oppressive and corrupt regimes. The current selections include chronic human rights abusers and entrenched authoritarian regimes. Cameroon wracked by corruption, ethnic violence against the English speaking minority, and an entrenched president ruling since 1982 despite fraudulent elections, sends precisely the wrong message. Freedom House allots Cameroon a Not Free rating. But things get worse. Though the victim of Islamic Al Shabab militant violence, Somalia, a barely functioning state, also joins the Council. For over a generation Somalia was viewed as a “failed state,” which needless to say does not have functioning political and civil institutions. Eritrea, a world class human rights offender in the same political league as North Korea (but happily without nuclear weapons), has also been elevated to the lofty clouds of the Council. Freedom House rates both countries as having a score of 3 out of 100 in

the comparators of political and civil rights. Tragically most people know Eritrea for the large numbers of refugees, mostly young educated people, fleeing from this former part of Ethiopia and into Europe.

Asia/Pacific: Here the new members include India, Fiji, Bangladesh, Bahrain and the Philippines. Both Bahrain and the Philippines merit the most attention. According to Freedom House the island state rates a

Shut Up, They Explain Gloria Alvarez, the young woman from Guatemala I wrote about last week, just got blocked by Facebook. Why? Because she criticizes socialism. by John Stossel After Alvarez Syndicated Columnist joined me in my American studio to make a video we titled “Socialism Fails Every Time,” she flew to Mexico City to make a speech. A few days later she wrote me that “some leftist ‘students’ posted on a fanpage called ‘Marxist and Leninist Memes’: ‘BOYCOTT Gloria Alvarez in our University! We won’t let her in!’” So Alvarez posted (in Spanish) on her own Facebook page: “My dear Mexican socialists intolerants: Thank you! for trying to boycott my event... showing that panic that you have for the debate of ideas. Given yours are so bad, that only with bullets they can be obeyed just like in Venezuela and Nicaragua. You demonstrate once again that you are the intolerant ones against freedom.” She ended her riff with a wise defense of free speech: “Where words are exchanged, bullets are no longer exchanged.” Then her account was blocked. “You recently posted something that violates Facebook policies,” wrote Facebook. What violated Facebook policies? Was it calling the people who demanded that she not be allowed to speak “socialists intolerants” whose ideas “are so bad that only with bullets they can be obeyed”? When social media companies block you, the reason is often mysterious. Facebook did say, “For more information, visit the Help Center... (U)nderstand Facebook’s Commu-

nity Standards.” Good luck getting an explanation that way. Alvarez suspects she was blocked because her opponents, boycott advocates, complained about her. Leftists are good at launching campaigns to shut people up. Fortunately, Alvarez has connections. A few days later she wrote, “a friend of mine that has a cousin working on Facebook Latin America (helped) me to unblock my page this morning.” Good. Except, most of us don’t have a friend whose cousin works for Facebook. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other social media platforms promote themselves as sites that enhance communication, not censor it. I shouldn’t use the word “censor.” When a private company blocks someone, it’s called editing. Companies edit to increase civil communication, improve the quality of discussion, delete threats and lies, etc. Editing helps make their sites more pleasant places to visit. Censorship and the First Amendment apply to governments. America’s Founders feared government censorship because government can use force, and we have just one government. But if Facebook blocks me, I still can communicate via Twitter, my YouTube videos or Instagram. But wait. Facebook bought Instagram. And Google bought YouTube. If these big companies edit me out, it will be hard to reach people. Conservatives claim social media companies are quicker to censor conservative speech. That’s probably true. The people who work for social media companies lean left. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey admitted that, telling CNN, “We need to constantly show that we are

Healthy Tip From Dr. Fink A REVOLUTIONARY IDEA

by Dr. Charles Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

Revolution – A sudden radical or complete change according to Webster. If you’re like many of us your days are full and getting it all done can be mind boggling. You want to live and eat healthy, but get overwhelmed with where to start and how to work it into your life. Whole food eating plans require shopping and meal planning and new ways of cooking. You need to acquaint yourself with these foods that may be unfamiliar and figure out ways to incorporate them into your diet. Next, comes exercise, which is best for me? Jog? Join a gym? Yoga? How about Karate? What will I stick with? Several years

ago a gal I know signed up for a Jazzercise class. They were running a special and the instructor asked if she was sure she wanted to pay for the entire 6 week trial or would she like to try it first and decide? She said “Oh I’m going to do this, I’ll pay for it all now. She described the hour long class as totally humiliating. When they went left I went right, when they went forward, I went back. I tripped, bumped, and stumbled my way through, but stuck it out. When it was over I couldn’t get out of there fast enough! Her next attempt was line dancing…. need I say more? Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Fall, with a blast of crisp air, is upon us. If you were in the Lakes Region last week that crisp air also carried some snow! Even so, this is easily my favorite season of the year. Autumn trappings like foliage, corn mazes, apple picking and of course football (but no pumpkin spice for me, thanks). The highlight of the fall for my kids is Halloween. Costumes, trick or treat, and being little scared or do a little scaring. Being scared or having a little startle can be fun occasionally, thus the popularity of scary movies, haunted houses and hay rack rides. Obviously, that’s all silly scariness and fun. When it comes to the real fear people experience the spectrum ranges from very serious stuff like death to stuff maybe you don’t need to be so scared of like nomophobia (the irrational fear of being without your mobile phone, I did not make this up). One thing

you should have less fear of is disease and sickness. I say this for two reasons: 1) some people become so scared of their health that they actually avoid their doctor and 2) the most common killers today are lifestyle related, so you have some degree of control. First if you have health concerns, seriously it is better to know than to stay in the dark. If you really do have an issue that needs to be dealt with, the longer you wait to get a check up, the more difficult things typically are to deal with. So truly don’t wait, get proactive. Better yet, view your health through the lens of prevention instead of reaction. As far as lifestyle disease goes, the medical journal, The Lancet, released the results of a study called The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, which features a large group of expert scientist. The findings were pretty amazing. 20 years ago more people suffered from maternal and child illness, malnutrition, and infectious disease. Now, however, less people deal with these issues and more deal with heart disease and cancers, which often have lifestyle factors involved. In fact, smoking and alcohol use have surpassed malnutrition as risk factors for

disease. The conclusions are pretty commonsense: many of our most feared diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes can be avoided or have their risk decreased via simple lifestyle choices. These lifestyle choices are the things you’ve always known you should do, but may not be doing. Simply, start exercising, make healthy food choices (including enough water), calm your mind with meditation/prayer, use alcohol in moderation, quit using tobacco (seriously), and get plenty of sleep. Get and follow through on appointments with your healthcare providers whether medical, dental, chiropractic, etc. These are really simple things. You can definitely do it. If you are avoiding them, stop thinking about the short term and start looking long term. If you are avoiding them because of money, stop because most positive lifestyle changes save money now (how much are smokes?) and will definitely save money in long term health costs. If you don’t make lifestyle choices due to lack of time as your excuse/I’m too busy, look past that ex-

The following legend was passed on by a Francis Chase in a book published in 1856 concerning a witch story that allegedly (to use an overused word in today’s world) took place in the year 1740. Chase wrote that the “sturdy founders of our nation” were “affected with many weaknesses. Among these may be mentioned particularly a fear of the supernatural, to which agency they ascribed every strange or unusual occurrence.” Supposedly related by a descendent of someone in the story a man by the name of Jones came to New Hampshire in that year of 1740 and built a house for his family on a tract of land he had cleared in the middle of New Hampshire, which would make it near to where I make my home today. After moving into their new home it only took the Jones family a week to realize that the house was haunted. They heard strange noises everywhere in the house, and, so they said, if they opened their eyes at midnight they would see “startling and inexplicable sights.” The family decided that they could no longer live in the house, but a man named Turner offered to get rid of what was c au s i n g t he pro blem.

Partially to prove how brave he was, he offered to stay in the house, find out what was causing the disturbances and to get rid of it. So the Jones’ went to stay with friends while Turner went to stay in the “haunted house”. The house was actually quite small being of one story, with a loft above, but with only three rooms on the main level, consisting of a kitchen with a fireplace, a sitting room, and a bedroom. Mr. Turner lit the fireplace and sat in front of it, staring at the flames which seemed to take on all sorts of strange shapes and sounds, accompanied by the sounds of the wind outside. All of this played upon Mr. Turner’s imagination, and as the shadows moved around on the walls, and the fire began to die down, fear began to come upon him. Mr. Turner, however, thought about his reputation of being a man of courage and roused himself, put more wood upon the fire, and, leaving the

door to the kitchen open, lay down in the bedroom to go to sleep. It was midnight when a noise awoke him from his sleep, and looking into the kitchen he saw a cat sitting on the hearth “gazing direfully at him with eyes like two balls of fire.” But, according to Chase’s account, “Turner was really a brave man.” He went to the kitchen near the fireplace and grabbed a fire shovel with a four foot handle, while the cat, with those fire-like eyes followed his movements. Mr. Turner swung the shovel at the cat with so strong a blow that it should have killed it, but, instead, the shovel bounced back as if the cat were made of rubber. He struck the cat again with even greater force, but the animal still survived, and, though being attacked with repeated strikes it slowing backed towards the door to the outside. Finally.as Turner struck a particularly strong b low , th e oa k p la n k s See SMITH on 36

Lake Turnover and Fall Fishing by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

October, usually when trout season closes, a lot of anglers give up on fishing for the season. They winterize their boats and put away their rods, because they believe fishing season to be over. Nany head into the woods for various hunting seasons and while I love to hunt too, there are too many great fishing opportunities in October and November for me to break away for too long. These fall fishing opportunities are driven largely by the phenomenon known as lake turnover, which is happening as I write this, and the fishing turns on almost overnight. If you like to fish as much as I do, then fall can be the most memorable time of the year. Lake turnover and length of daylight drives fall feeding for many species, but anglers often don’t understand how and why it works. By late August, the temperature of most water bodies has warmed and stabilized. Warmer water sits on top while dense cooler water has settled to the bottom. Larger lakes develop a thermocline layer that separates the upper layer of warmer water from the layer of cool water below. However, when the air temperatures begin to drop, surface water temperatures begin to cool. This cooler water is denser and sinks, forcing warmer water to the surface. The cycle continues until the lakes freeze. Hence the term lake turn over. When lakes and ponds turn over, coupled with

The fish still swims today. shorter days, many fish species are triggered to feed so they can bulk up for the coming winter. Warmwater schooling fish such as crappie, white perch, and sunfish will form large schools and spend many days chowing all the food they can get. While many of these species, especially white perch, are in schools most of the year, the schools get bigger, the fish get bigger, and the feeding activity gets more aggressive. Most times, warmwater schooling fish will head for basins after a lake turns over. Basins hold plankton, which attracts baitfish, which in turn attracts gamefish. Almost all water bodies have some sort of

basin or depression. Low light periods, such as early morning, late afternoon, or cloudy days, are the best time to target gamefish in basins, as this is when plankton is most active. For those waters that do not have a well-defined basin, the challenge is figuring out the feeding behavior. On windy days, the windward shorelines often hold bait that gets pushed there by prevailing winds. Watch for nervous water where bait may be pushed to the surface by predatory gamefish or seek out submerged shoreline structure to find fish. Some of my favorite lures include the Live Baby Shad from Lake Fork Trophy See MOORE on 31

Meet “Severus” Severus is a two-year-old brown tabby cat that came to CVHS over three weeks ago as a stray. This handsome guy is waiting for a forever home where he can receive as much love as he gives! He’s a laid-back cat, but still has plenty of energy at the spry age of two. At the shelter, Severus can be seen climbing about his kitty towers and curiously gazing at visitors in the lobby each day. As soon as you approach him, he leaps down from his perch to wind around your legs in an affectionate greeting. Severus’s laid-back attitude indicates that he would do well in a family with children. He’s had no issues with dogs, as long as they’re tolerant of cats. Severus has tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), so he needs to go to a home without other cats, unless those cats are also FIV positive. Do you have room in your home for a cuddly companion? Come meet Severus at Cocheco Valley Humane Society at 262 County Farm Road in Dover, NH! What is truth? Is it what someone says it is? Or is it the accurate recounting of an event or action told by a worthy observer? Sometimes, we understand that the truth we once believed was as stated is not what actually happened. During war times, a drug was administered to captured soldiers to derive information about their enemy. This ‘truth serum’ was a way to extract details if the captive were overcome by it. In any event, since its inception, truth serum was a term given to many things in jest. Vodka is known around bars and taverns as truth serum as are many other strong beverages. So, we take a look at another form of truth serum from our friends at Dogfish Head Brewing. Dogfish Head was one of the early leaders of the craft brewing enterprise. Among their vast offerings of great tasting beers, Dogfish was the front-runner in the making of great brewing skill. Located in their massive brewery in Milton, a suburb of Delaware, Maryland, Dogfish’s owner, Sam Calagione, has over the years, created some of the most interesting and creative beer recipes that have helped shape the craft beer industry since 1995. They were the first to create pumpkin-style beer. They were also the first to innovate continuous hopping of India Pale Ale style beers. Their 60 minute, 90 minute 120 minute IPA’s are still revered as leaders in the IPA craze. They cater to the hop-heads of

America with their unique and interesting hopped brew sensations as well as many other beer styles. They also have a distillery in which they produce rum, gin and vodka. Their restaurant, Chesapeake & Maine serves delicious food crafted much like their beer… delicious! Check them out at dogfish.com Liquid Truth Serum IPA is a fascinating result of a process Dogfish has been working on for years. Historically, hops have been added to the boil early to attain bittering qualities against the sweet malt character. The later hops are added, the less bittering takes place and more aromas are produced. If this concept is explored thoroughly, hops are now a way to derive tastes that are only found in different verities of hops worldwide. Truth is a hybrid use of the four states of hops:

leaf, liquified, pelletized and powdered AFTER the boil so no bittering hops were included. The result is an amazingly aromatic golden wonder filled with orange and grapefruit notes in which your tastebuds will thank you over and over. BeerAdvocate.com has officially rated Liquid Truth Serum IPA as ‘Exceptional’ and awards it a 4.04 out of 5.0 while other followers are rating it as high as 4.36 out of 5.0 scale. You can find Dogfish Head Brewery’s Liquid Truth Serum IPA at Case-n-Keg in Meredith as well as other fine beer providers. And don’t forget to always tell the truth! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com

How to Defeat Clogged Drains (StatePoint) Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, clogged drains are likely to affect your bathroom and kitchen sinks every so often as a result of soap residue, hair and skin flakes, food particles, dirt and accumulated gunk. While you could call a plumber to address these

issues as they occur, it’s often faster and cheaper to handle clogs on your own. What’s the best way to do it? Snaking the drain is one step you could take, but for a hands-free approach, consider using a liquid clog remover, such as those from the RotoRooter line of drain care products. For information

about clogged drains and for simple DIY clog removal tips, visit rotorooterproducts.com. When drain blockages occur -- and they will -- consider reaching for the most expedient and affordable approach to clearing these obstructions.

Five Steps This Fall To A More Beautiful Landscape

by Melinda Myers Don’t let a busy schedule stop you from creating a beautiful landscape. Incorporate a few of these changes into your fall landscape care. You’ll create beautiful results with a limited investment of time and effort. •Cut the grass, recycle fall leaves, and improve the soil with a pass of the lawn mower. Shred leaves and leave them on the lawn as you mow this fall. As long as you can see the grass through the leaf pieces, the lawn will be fine. As the leaves break down, they add organic matter to the soil, improving drainage in clay soil and water-holding ability in sandy soils. Or, as an alternative, use excess leaves as a soil mulch. Shred the leaves with your mower and spread a layer over the soil to conserve moisture and insulate the roots of perennials. •Improve your lawn’s health by fertilizing this fall with a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer, like Milorganite. You’ll reduce the risk of disease problems and with slower weed growth in fall, your lawn, not the weeds, will benefit

from the nutrients. Fall fertilization also helps lawns recover from the stresses of summer by encouraging deep roots and denser growth that can better compete with weeds and tolerate disease and insects. Northern gardeners should fertilize again around Halloween. Southern gardeners should make their last fall fertilization at least 30 days before the lawn goes dormant or the

average first killing frost to avoid winter kill. •Do a bit of planting. Fall is a good time to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. The soil is warm and the air cooler, so the plants are less stressed and establish more quickly. Select plants suited to the growing conditions and be sure to give them plenty of room to reach their mature size. Plant daffodils, tulips,

How to Select the Best Ceiling Fans for Your Home Interiors

(StatePoint) If you have a “less is more” outlook on home decorating purchasing decisions, you probably want your lighting fixtures to not only be functional, but also fashionable elements that complement other accessories and contribute to your overall interior design. When it comes to ceiling fans, experts say that by shopping around, you can find a highly functional fixture that can even serve as the focal point of a room. “Today’s ceiling fans incorporate beautiful features, such as hand carved blades, sleek finishes and natural elements -- to appeal to a variety of different design trends,” says Steve Register, ceiling fan product manager for Progress Lighting. So how do you select the best one for your space? Choose Your Features • Versatile functionality. Do you want to use your ceiling fan year-

round? Simply select a fan with reversible blades for the option to circulate cool air in summer or warm air in winter. • Efficiency. To save energy and green your home, consider an ENERGY STAR rated fixture. • Lighting. To get in on today’s lighting trends, go for a layered lighting design in your space by installing a light kit or selecting a fan with a preinstalled fixture. • Control. Some fans feature full-range dimming and full-function remote control capabilities, to offer added convenience in controlling a room’s environment. Size It To Your Space Size is really important when selecting a ceiling fan. If a fan is too large, it can overwhelm the space. On the flip side, if the fan is too small, the airflow may be inadequate. The American Lighting Association suggests the following fan sizes com-

pared to square footage: • Up to 75 square-feet -- 36 inches or less • 75-144 square-feet -36 to 42 inches • 144-225 square-feet -- 44 to 40 inches • 225-400 sq. ft -- 50 to 54 inches Find Your Style Once you’ve identified the size and application of your fan, it’s time for the fun part -- choosing a style that complements your style. Consider fan shape, blade features and finish to help you meet the room’s design needs. You can view Progress Lighting’s ceiling fan offerings, which include Coastal, Transitional, Traditional and Farmhouse styles, at progresslighting.com. For a simple home upgrade that goes a long way, consider a ceiling fan with all the features you’ll want and need for year-round comfort and beauty.

(BPT) - When you start feeling those first hints of winter, the instinct to get ready kicks in. You may dig out your car’s snow brush, blanket, shovel and winter survival kit and place them in the trunk of your car. The winter coats and boots come out of storage, and you may pick up some extra mittens. But what do you do to protect your house against the hazards of winter? If you don’t take time for maintenance and winterization now, you can end up paying for it later, in the form of higher energy bills, frozen pipes or fixing a broken furnace. Here are four common problems that can hit home during the winter and how you can ward them off. Sky-High Energy Bills Do your electric bills

rise during the wintertime? Heating your home accounts for about half of your home’s energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Combat the cold by sealing off any cracks or gaps with caulk and inspect entrances for worn or broken weatherstripping. Schedule a furnace inspection with an HVAC contractor and consider installing a smarter thermostat. Learning thermostats can remember your favorite temperatures, turning down when you leave for work, and returning to your favorite temp at the end of the day. Water Leaks According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage accounts for half of all property damage claims. Add winter’s freezing temperatures to the mix,

and you can end up with a big problem if your home has a power outage or your furnace malfunctions. For extra peace of See PROBLEMS on 28

mind, there’s now a leak and flood protection system you can purchase that shuts off your water main’s supply when it detects leaks - and sends an alert to your smart device. LeakSmart Snap installs in seconds without any tools or the need to cut into the main water supply line. Wireless sensors placed around the house can detect a leak or temperature changes and shut down the whole house water supply in seconds. It is compatible with LeakSmart Hub 3.0, which offers battery back-up and built in WiFi for 24/7 whole home protection. Power Outages When a winter storm hits, the ice and wind can break power lines and interrupt the supply of electricity to our homes. It’s not uncommon for some outages to last for days, which is why it’s always smart to be prepared. Before winter hits, make certain your gen-

erator or other backup power source has ample fuel and is in good working order. Keep basic supplies at the ready, so you can keep your family comfortable. Make sure you have extra blankets, stocking caps, batteries and fully charged power banks for your mobile phones. It’s also good to have a few gallons of fresh water and some cans of ready-to-eat chili and stew. If you have a camp stove, keep it in an easy-to-reach place, along with a fuel supply. Ice Dams Another thing to watch for in the winter are pools of water forming on your roof. These can be caused by ridges of snow and ice, and eventually cause leaks to the interior of your home. Ice dams can also lead to the formation of large, pointy icicles that hang from the gutters, which can fall and injure people. A little work upfront can go a long way toward preventing ice dams and the damage they can

cause. First, make sure the gutters and downspouts are clear of leaves and other yard debris, so the snowmelt has a place to go. Next, poke your head into the crawlspace of your attic and see if the insulation layer is still thick enough to keep the heat from escaping through the roof. While you’re up there, look for gaps and leaks. Finally, this is an appropriate time to invest in a simple snow rake, so you can easily remove wet, heavy snow from your roof before the dams can start forming. Now that you know the most common winter hazards that can hit home, you can take the steps to protect your investment and keep your family comfortable and safe. hyacinths and other bulbs in fall for extra color next spring. Set the bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height deep. Then cover them with soil and sprinkle on a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer. This type of fertilizer promotes rooting without stimulating fall growth subject to winter kill. Base your bulb planting time on the weather not the calendar. Start planting after the night-time temperatures hover between 40 and 50 degrees. Be patient, waiting until the soil cools reduces the risk of early sprouting that often occurs during a warm fall. Those gardening in the far south and along the gulf coast can purchase precooled bulbs to compensate for the warm winters. Or the chilling can be done at home by storing the bulbs in a 35- to 45-degree location for at least 14 weeks before planting. •Leave healthy perennials stand for winter. Not only do they provide homes for many of our native pollinators, but they increase hardiness and add beauty to the winter landscape with their seed heads, dried foliage and the birds they at-

tract. Plus, this delays your cleanup until spring when gardeners are anxious to get outdoors and start gardening. However, be sure to remove any diseased or insectinfested plants to reduce the source of pest problems in next year’s garden. •Start composting or add shredded leaves and other plant debris to an existing compost pile. Combine fall leaves with other plant waste, a bit of soil or compost, and sprinkle with fertilizer to create compost. Recycling yard waste saves time bagging, hauling and disposing of green debris. You’ll also reduce or eliminate the need to buy soil amendments to improve your existing garden soil. Incorporating one or all these practices will increase the health and beauty of your landscape now and for years to come. tigators, shows a more somber side in this investigation even driven to calling Billy out despite his respect for Billy. Benn is as deft with the dialogue as he is with the narrative. Billy may be older and wiser, but he still has a sardonic tongue and an Irish temper. Big Mike is blunt and not shy about voicing his repulsion or his affection. And Kaz’s words are genuine when expressing the subtler points of war and of the people trapped in the conflict: “That hatred is incompatible with hope.” As well as being adroit at putting the reader in the company of the characters Benn has a flair for putting the reader on the ground where the action is, and he starts right off with his descriptions of the death and destruction lining the roads of Normandy. Benn puts the scent of apples and dust up your

Author James Benn nose, the sound of mobs and tanks in your ears, and the taste of Hershey bars and bad coffee on your tongue. After experiencing battle with Billy you’ll need food and sleep before facing the next bombing, the next close shave, the next encounter. Whether you are a mystery fan, a lover of historical novels, or someone who enjoys well-written books of all sorts you’ll find Solemn Graves an excellent read. If you want to better under-

stand your military veteran father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, Benn can help by putting you inside Billy’s head as he moves from a young and bold Boston cop to a war-weary soldier. If you missed a lot of the interesting and obscure bits about World War II in high school history, Benn will cover that too. Benn’s writing is so good that you’ll feel like you are on the ground with Billy, Kaz and Big Mike. Safe journey.

Lures. The Live Baby Shad works well on a small jig head and drifted through a school. Crappie almost can’t resist it. You don’t even really need to jig it. Just get it down just above the school and drift. My absolute favorite panfish lure is a size 3 or 4 Salmo Chubby Darter. I’ve never had a bad day when fishing the Chubby Darter. Choose your color based on light conditions and water clarity, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Fall offers some of the best panfishing of the entire year. The catching is often non-stop and there is a multitude of lures that work well. Panfish are excellent table fare. They usually have a mild flavor, depending on where they are caught. Fall panfishing is also an excellent activity for kids. The non-stop action will keep everyone busy for hours. By November every lake and pond has turned over, and I’ll probably be on one of them right up until ice-in. Tim Moore is a full-time licensAed NH fishing guide

“believe all women” during the Brett Kavanaugh witch hunt declined my invitation in 2013 to join my bipartisan Ladies Against Senator Sleaze-Bob group when reports of the underage prostitute parties broke. I’m still waiting for a single female Democrat to

step up to the plate. Tick. Tock. Here’s the good news: Despite the best efforts by Beltway Dems and their media allies to whitewash the aftermath of Menendez’s federal corruption mistrial last fall, New Jersey voters smell a rat. The Garden State may be

bluer than Papa Smurf, but Menendez’s approval ratings are taking an island dive and recent polls showed him in a dead heat with GOP challenger Bob Hugin. This week, Senate Majority PAC, the Senate Democrats’ super PAC, announced it would be

dumping $3 million to help Menendez in the state that Clinton won by a 14-point margin over Donald Trump. That’s $3 million diverted from other competitive Senate races in battleground states, including North Dakota, Nevada, Indiana, Florida, Tennessee, Montana and Missouri. So the Titanic attempt to save sinking Sleaze-Bob may end up torpedoing the Dems’ chances of re-taking the Senate. No worries, though. I hear Hill and Bill will have plenty of room on their Corruptopalooza post-election speaking tour stage for the losers. Michelle Malkin is host of “Michelle Malkin Investigates” on CRTV.com. saying, “Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage,” and that Warren’s DNA test “makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven.” All of this should have been foreseeable by anyone with half a brain. Falsely claiming you are Native American for years is bad enough. But releasing a study demonstrating that you are 99.9 percent white -- and then claiming that such

a study justifies your false claims? What made Warren, an intelligent human being, think such a thing? Only one simple fact: Warren knows, as everyone in politics knows, that the media will cover for nearly any instance of leftist political manipulation. They’ll cover for Warren fibbing about her ancestry. They’ll cover for Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke driving drunk, plowing into a truck and then attempting to flee the scene of the crime. They’ll cover for Arizona Senate candidate Rep. Kyrsten Sinema saying that she didn’t care if Americans joined the Taliban (CNN’s headline:

“Krysten Sinema’s AntiWar Activist Past Under Scrutiny as She Runs for Senate”). Democrats have the enviable advantage of being able to trot out nearly any story and be given credibility by most of the mainstream media. Non-Democrats, however, see this game. And every time the media simply parrot Democratic talking points on issues like Warren’s ancestry, they undercut their credibility. Large media institutions have done more than anyone, including President Trump, to destroy their reputations with the American people. Their pathetic behavior over the past few weeks, in the approach to the 2018 elections, shows that they’re doubling down on stupid. pitiful 12/100 globally. The human rights monitor adds, “Once a promising model for political reform and democratic transition, Bahrain has become one of the Middle East’s most repressive states.” So they shall now judge others? The Philippines needs no introduction. Happily the Philippines ranks 62/100 aggregate in rights and freedoms and indeed Freedom House lists the country as Partly Free. Tragically the undertow of corruption, a tainted judiciary and government supported extra judicial killings has tipped the scales on the Manila government. Eastern Europe: Here both Bulgaria and the Czech Republic garnered seats. Though both states were part of the old Soviet Bloc, they regained their freedom after 1989 and now are members of the European Union. In earlier years, during the Vaclav Havel presidency, the Czech Republic, a highly ranked parliamentary democracy, was a respected human rights advocate from Cuba to China. But a new government in Prague has soft-pedaled China’s transgressions. Maybe because Beijing is a large foreign investor in the Czech Republic?

Latin America/Caribbean: The new members are the Bahamas, Uruguay and Argentina. No problem here as we have three very free countries; Uruguay ranks 98/100, higher than most European states. Western Europe: New members include Italy, Austria, Denmark, all highly rated democracies. Austria ranks 94/100 and Denmark a sterling 97/100. Bravo! Following the vote Ambassador Nikki Haley commented, “This lack of standards continues to undermine the organization and demonstrates again why the United States was right to withdraw from it earlier this year.” And guess what? These new members shall join Afghanistan. China, Cuba, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia among others already on the Council. This uncontested indifference ultimately cheapens the Council’s standing. Yet ironically the real tragedy is that the Council may actually reflect the world more than we would care to admit. John J. on the door seemed to separate for the cat to disappear between them before they closed again. Turner opened the door and looked to his left and to his right but saw no sign of the cat. When morning came the house-sitter went to the barn before breakfast to tend to the cattle and found that a prize calf was missing though the doors seemed to be secure and no place for the calf to escape was found. As he searched the pasture he heard the sound of a bleating calf, but

could not see the animal. He followed the sound and it led him to a solid log from which the sound seemed to come. Though perplexed he went for an axe and wedges with which he split open the log and found a cavity with the calf within. Returning to the barn he discovered a knot hole lined with hair, and perceiving that the hole must have been the escape route for the calf, summoned the neighbors who gathered to discuss the strange event, but agreed that the calf, which didn’t survive

much longer, must have somehow been drawn through the knothole. That same morning Turner with his horse and sleigh started on a trip to a mill which was five miles away. As he reached the half way mark to the mill he came to the house of a neighbor whom he saw standing in the door, and the man begged him to come in and see his grandmother who had been struck with an illness during the night. Turner, on seeing the grandmother, was amazed to find her to be

The old woman died the same day and the Jones house was haunted no more, and I suppose that Mr. Turner, who beat the cat with eyes like balls of fire, proved that he was indeed a brave man. Or maybe somebody, in 1740 or 1856, had a bad dream, and that fear of the supernatural convinced them that the events really happened.
