“Turkey Trot” In Dover

Carey Kish of Mount Desert Island, Maine, recently completed his second hike across the entire Appalachian Trail, the first one was thirty-eight years ago in 1977.

Maine Man Hikes Appalachian Trail For Second Time - 38 Years Later by Amy Patenaude Outdoor.Ski Columnist

Hooray for Beerman! Hooray for Carey Kish! My friend Carey Kish of Mount Desert Island, Maine followed the Appalachian Trail’s white blazes from Springer Mountain, Georgia all the way to the summit of Mount Katahdin, Maine. Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT) is a great accomplishment. This finish was indeed a grand accomplishment because this was

the second time he has completed the journey, all 2,189.2 miles. On March 18th, Carey left the summit of Springer Mountain and started hiking north on the Appalachian Trail. His SixMoon Journey (the name of his blog at MaineToday. com) began in the rain and it was only 47 degrees. 189 days later, on October 4th, his wife Fran and a few friends accompanied him up Mount Katahdin. They paused near the summit and then

Carey kissed his wife and sprinted ahead to reach the iconic summit sign that marks the northern terminus of the AT. 38 years ago he had made the same summit trek when he completed his first thru hike at just 18 years of age. Fresh out of Bangor High School with a copy of the book Appalachian Hiker: Adventure of a Lifetime by Edward Garvey in his hand he hit the trail and somehow he made it. Sure there must be a little more

to the story but certainly he was young and green. Carey told me when he finished his first thruhike he was quoted in the newspaper saying that he couldn’t wait to do it again. And he really meant it, but life has a way of getting in the way and keeping a long distance hiker off the trail. Not that he didn’t try; he had two aborted attempts, once in 1989 and again in 1994. I joined Carey on the See kish on 22

Hall Of Flags To the Editor, The Seven to Save listing of the Hall of Flags in Concord’s Statehouse by the N.H. Preservation Alliance a few weeks ago should come as a wakeup call this Veterans Day. More than 33,000 New Hampshire men served in the Civil War, almost 10% of the state’s population at the time. More than 30 won the Congressional Medal of Honor for their courage. Almost 5,000 never came home, and thousands more were wounded. They fought at Cold Harbor, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Fort Sumter. They fought to preserve the Union, and to end slavery. The flags they carried and brought home were more than symbols; they marked the front line of battle and guided men amid the chaos and

smoke of war. The bullets and the blood of battle still mark the flags. Over the last hundred years, a variety of attempts have been made to preserve these Civil War flags, as well as flags from other conflicts. For the past two decades, the people entrusted with their care have solicited various condition assessments and treatment proposals, but there has been no action. The NH General Court’s Joint Legislative Historical Committee continues to try to seek consensus on a conservation plan for the flags, wishing to keep the originals on view for the thousands of visitors who come to the building each year. There is also an effort to preserve the room and its appearance for the upcoming 200th anniversary of the State House in

2019. While all agree on the value of these emblems of service, decisions about how to care for this iconic room and assure the preservation of its flags have yet again been delayed. For the soldiers who sacrificed and died for our nation, and for the generations of men and women who have helped defend our liberty one thing is clear: we can do better. . Innis & Guinta To the Editor: Republican Dan Innis is running again against disgraced Congressman Frank Guinta in the Republican Primary for Congress. Innis told WMUR that Guinta’s campaign finance violations were a “major factor in his decision to run. However, those violations weren’t a problem for him in 2014, when he endorsed Guinta. Since all the facts about Frank have been in plain view since a Republican first filed the complaint against Guinta in 2010, it tells voters plenty about Innis’ ethics as well. He was against Frank before he was for Frank, before he was against Frank. Innis’ views on Guinta have had nothing to do with ethics and everything to do with ambition and opportunity. Voters beware! *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Word Play

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I was reading online what someone thought were the best fifty-one lines ever from literature. It was an impressive list of famous authors throughout history whom most of us know, or should know. There was a line by Shakespeare (yes, just one oddly enough). Others were by Robert Frost, J.D. Salinger, Charles Dickens, etc. As a writer I found them all to be great lines and secretly jealous. Would I ever write a line that would someday make it into the top fifty-one? Of course, that would mean that for my line (or even yours) to make it onto this prestigious list, then one of the other famous lines would have to be removed, which seems unlikely. My best chance, I guess, would be if the list was expanded to sixty or seventy for one of my lines, yet to be written, to have a chance to be included. I’d imagine there is a list somewhere of the worst fifty-one lines ever written, but I could be wrong. In order for anyone to know that it was one of the worst ever, it would have had to have been published and with the wall of editors that a book must have to go through, I am assuming that many of the worst lines ever written – and I would bet more than a few were created by famous writers – never saw the light of day.

Still, I think people would definitely enjoy more the list of clunkers as opposed to the list of perfection. For some reason I would find the list much more entertaining if I found out that Dylan Thomas not only wrote “Rage, rage against the dying light but also “Her round head was covered by a silk scarf like a fine piece of imported cheese. I have written many a bad line over the years, most of which were soon deleted. That really was a mistake on my part. I should have held onto them for posterity, not to mention being ready when submissions for the worst fifty-one lines of all time are being accepted. As the editor of a weekly newspaper I get many submissions for possible publication that contain lines that would be shoeins for nomination to the list. Most of them occur when people, who don’t like something they read and think they can do better - much like someone who has a bad meal out then aspires to open a restaurant - use an overabundance of metaphors and similes to try and make some sort of literary mark. Usually their pieces end up like a bowl of alphabet soup with too many letters. (See what I mean?) One person even explained at one point in his article that what was to follow was a metaphor as if that was how to properly introduce one. If he was going to go that far he should have explained that not only was it a metaphor, but it wasn’t going to be a very good one. (I will not repeat it here for the sake of a lawsuit since it would be very easy to prove it was his since I do not think it possible that two people on the same planet could have thought

of it.) Some of the similes range from the totally uncreative such as “His hair was like a bird’s nest to the working too hard to try and be creative such as “His hair was like an eagle’s’ nest which had just been attacked by a lion. (Yes, I have seen some that were very close to these.) As someone who writes (I don’t like to call myself a writer, that puts too much pressure on me) I have written many bad lines, metaphors and similes, but I realized later which were awful and which weren’t so awful. (I think and I hope.) Writing a bad metaphor and thinking it is a great metaphor is like proudly serving to dinner guests your famous Alfredo sauce made with skim milk. Writing a bad metaphor and realizing it is a bad metaphor is like eating your own Alfredo sauce after going to a fine Italian restaurant for the first time. Based on the above two sentences, I have yet to decide what or where I will be eating tonight. I doubt any of the lines I have written here today will ever compete for one of the best lines ever written, but that’s okay with me. If I keep plugging along at this inborn passion I have to write, something that is beyond my control. I’m sure I will create more than a few that will make the list of the fifty-one best lines ever written by me. That will be just enough to keep me going and that works for me. Obamnesty Falls Apart. American Workers Win

Well, this should make the crapweasels in D.C. listen. On Monday, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals told the immigraby Michelle Malkin tion powergrabbers in Syndicated Columnist the Obama administration to stuff it. The amnesty sympathizers in the media mourned mightily. “Appeals court rules against Obama’s plan to protect about 5 million people from deportation,” the Associated Press spun. “Court again blocks Obama’s plan to protect undocumented migrants,” the left-wing U.K. Guardian decried. “President Barack Obama’s executive action to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation suffered a legal setback on Monday with an appeal to the Supreme Court now the administration’s only option,” Reuters reported. Or rather, editorialized in the guise of reporting. By a 2-1 decision, the federal judges handed a landmark victory to 26 states, led by Texas, that forcefully challenged the legality of Obama’s executive amnesty overreach. The 5th Circuit majority ruled that the states’ case was “likely to succeed on its merits” and that a lower court’s injunction against the White House was “impressive and thorough.” Judge Jerry Smith summed up: “At its core, this case is about the (Department of Homeland Security) Secretary’s decision to change the immigration classification of millions of illegal aliens on a classwide basis.” By a wave of his hand, President Obama and his DHS minions is-

sued blanket deportation waivers and work authorization documents to 1.2 million young illegal immigrants (the “DREAMers”) and 4.3 million parents of an even broader class of illegal immigrants. No congressional debate about the impact on American citizens and American workers. No public comment period as required by federal Administrative Procedures Act. No nothing. Current immigration law, the majority concluded, “flatly does not permit the reclassification of millions of illegal aliens as lawfully present and thereby make them newly eligible for a host of federal and state benefits, including work authorization.” Here’s how the radical transformer-in-chief turned the law on its head: Under the Constitution, Congress defines the classes of immigrants eligible to work in the United States, and the executive branch has the broad authority to determine the individual immigrants within those classes who are authorized to work. Obama’s Department of Homeland Security flipped this around and usurped the authority to allow any alien -legally or illegally in the country -to work unless Congress explicitly prohibits it. The Obama administration first encroached upon congressional authority over immigration with the so-called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed illegal immigrant children to remain in the United States. Next, Obama created the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents program, which granted illegal immigrant parents with children born in the United States the right to remain in the United States and work. After lower court judge Andrew

Media outlets have been reporting a 12% decline in abortion between 2010 and 2014. Many abortion supporters like by Jane Cormier to say this numHooksett, NH. ber is not correct, citing there has been a decline in overall pregnancy. However, live births have declined only 1.4%. So, if the abortion decline was just a matter of fewer pregnancies, then we should expect a similar decline in live births. This is clearly not the case. 12% vs.1.4% shows there is a clear drop in number of abortions in our country. In 2010, roughly 18% of pregnancies ended in abortion. In 2014, this figured dropped to 16.4% or 62,700 fewer abortions. See malkin on 25 When you compare these num-

bers to the approximate 29% of births which ended in abortion in the 1980’s, it can no longer be denied. Abortions are going down. Slowly, but quite surely. Certainly, technology plays a role in this renaissance. Prolife supporters have played an important role as well. Social media has also assisted in getting the pro-life message into the mainstream of America. But, make no mistake, the message that Life should be protected all along the life spectrum is starting to take root. And why not? It is quite logical that life taken for granted at the beginning of life’s spectrum, will only devalue life all along that same spectrum. The lives of the infirmed, elderly, weak, and pre-born should ALL be respected and protected. This is the only moral, and dare I say, logical choice. So, when you hear that proSee cormier on 26

Obama’s Keystone Pipedream UNITED NAT ION S —Presi-

dent Barack Obama has cancelled the Keystone XL, ending a seven year saga in which the by John J. Metzler pipeline from Syndicated Columnist Alberta, Canada would have provided 800,000 barrels of oil to the USA on a daily basis. By scuttling the controversial deal which has been part of an on again/off again political drama in both Washington and Ottawa, Obama cited environmental concerns and basically threw in the fact that America is awash with more affordable oil, so why do we need Keystone anyway? In a Friday afternoon announcement, Obama naturally put the onus on the State Department whose environmental assessment now suggested rejecting the controversial conduit. In a sober and punctilious announcement, the President finally killed Keystone, and at the same time slapped Canada who has had so much invested in the infrastructural project. The timing was curious in itself as the cancellation came only two days into the tenure of Canada’s new left-leaning Trudeau government, who while publicly supporting Keystone, was quick to show his “disappointment” over the outcome and the ill-timed

curve ball from Washington. So lets’s look at the winners and losers in the Keystone drama. Winners: The Environmental lobby (on both sides of the border) who always detested the pipeline which would send petroleum from Alberta province to the Midwest and south to the Gulf Coast for refining. The Eco/ Lobby has been reenergized by this action. President Obama wanted to boost his environmental credentials just before the Paris UN Cop21 Climate Summit and show the USA leads the way on protecting the planet. I’m sure Beijing is very impressed. Lol. Speaking of China, don’t be surprised if Canada now looks to the People’s Republic as a consumer for the petroleum. And let’s not forget that our “friends” in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will be more than happy to fill the void; Angola, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to name a few. Losers: American workers. The Administration promotes building infrastructure; if a pipeline is not infrastructure, I don’t know what is. Both Republicans and moderate Democrats agreed that constructing Keystone was good for American jobs, estimated at up to 42,000 construction and related jobs for a few years. Unions supported the project as did industry. That’s why a num-

ber of Democrat Senators from the Midwest also backed the project. Earlier in the year, in a U.S. Senate vote of 62-36, nine Democrats supported Keystone. Shipping the oil by truck and rail, as we currently do, is far

less environmentally friendly and efficient than a pipeline. Pollution from streams of tanker trucks, not to mention the danger of hauling oil on Midwest roads, is far less efficient and

Stop The Bleeding There was a painful irony when France’s immediate response to the terrorist attacks in Paris was to close the borders. If they had closed by Thomas Sowell t h e b o r d e r s Syndicated Columnist decades ago, they might have avoided this attack. Someone once said that the First World War was the most stupid thing that European nations ever did. Countries on both sides of that war ended up worse off than before, whether they were on the winning side or the losing side. History may yet record that an even greater stupidity, with even more catastrophic consequences in the long run, was the European nations’ decisions to import millions of people with a culture that was not merely very different, but hostile, to the culture, the values and the people of the Western world. Even now, people who publicly warn of the dangers can be prosecuted in various European countries under “hate speech” laws. And what about us? When, if ever, are we going to close our borders? When will we even take control of our borders, so that we can decide who, and how many, will be admitted? Certainly not before a new president takes office in January 2017 -- and maybe not even then. Both Democrats and Republicans are responsible for failing to take control of the borders. In all the years that have been spent talking back and forth about every conceivable immigration policy -- and some that

are inconceivable -- we could have built the biggest fence of all time, backed up by electronics, boots on the ground and whatever else it takes. Instead, many have been pursuing the will-o’-the-wisp called “comprehensive” immigration reform. In other words, we are supposed to do everything all at once, like Obamacare. How well did that turn out? There are very serious and complex questions to be confronted before immigration issues are laid to rest by new laws. But none of that stops us from taking control of the borders now. When someone is brought into a hospital, bleeding profusely, he may also have other medical problems that will need to be addressed at some point. But, first of all, you STOP THE BLEEDING. Nobody is stopping the bleeding across our borders. The fact that the main border that people have been pouring across, at will, is the border with Mexico, does not mean that everyone crossing that border is Mexican. Middle East terrorists can cross that border just as easily -- and probably have crossed it. And will continue to cross it. There are lots of complicated issues revolving around the open borders -- drugs, visas, employers, refugees, crime syndicates, sanctuary cities, amnesty and more. But first we need to stop the bleeding. There is absolutely nothing to stop us from discussing what kind of immigration policy we need to have, while the border is being secured. And, if the border is not secured, it does not matter what kind of immigration policy we have -- or think we have -- because people will See Sowell on 25

Things, they are a changin’. You know, “Hope and Change! I did not hope for this “New America. by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Is this still the land of the free and the home of the brave? That is not being regressive; it is loving the way we have been and are trying to remain with freedom to be ourselves, within reason, and allowed to be critical when deemed necessary. My First Amendment allows that. Of course, an honest person would not defame another without absolute facts. In this case, politicians, their operatives, the campaign team they put together along with THE MEDIA, but then THEY do care if it is a lie that will promote a certain candidate, or philosophy. That is not reporting the actual happenings, but playing an active role in an election. T h e w or ld , sp ecif ically the U.S., is coming

apart. What happened to “we are all equal? Is “equal a color. Is it getting a free education at taxpayers’ expense? Is this about a college football player studying how toothpicks are grown? Why did a group of college football players manage to remove a college administrator so the players would grace us with their presence on the field and on television? And the message for America is, we are superior to you? Whoa, aren’t we all equal? Guess not. It appears that a small percentage of Black athletes, along with a sprinkle of White Americans who are bleeding heart liberals, are just there for the “college experience and wasting the money of both parents and taxpayers. Those folks, the angry students, are angry, why? The “bad seeds are being planted in the soil of destruction of true education in America. The U. S, Constitution tells us that “All men are created equal. Equal for the chance to succeed in your chosen vocation is equal opportunity. Where did I impede that opportunity? Who suffers from discrimination? ANSWER: Neither you nor I. The students(?) believe they are the victims of discrimination and it is them, not us, who are being discriminated against! Hundreds of thousands of brave and principled Americans love freedom and gave their lives so you and I could live free. Living free did not mean this country would pay your way through life because we “owe you. Those military heroes from the beginning of a dream fought to create that

dream. They fought and defeated those opposed to our dream. They were tan skinned, Black and White skinned Americans (including my father at the Battle of the Bulge) who gave their lives for us. Now what are these so-called Americans doing? Across this land there are protests . Burning mattresses, cars, antagonizing campus police and other law enforcement heroes. From my father’s death benefit was a monthly check and the opportunity of free scholarship to college. I did not use the scholarship. So, Mr. Equal Opportunity, my children lost their grandfather while fighting for your future thinking that those beyond my generation would always defend the freedoms they died for in all wars. Last week we witnessed a poor example of the talented academically and athletically high school age boys of how not to decide your future if that is a degree. Start working toward that dream; do not wait for opportunity and someone to make it free for you. My ranting is over for this week! Before we meet again watch closely to events happening as a result of students protests. When will it all end?

MISSOURI MACHINATIONS NEWS ITEM — University of Missouri president Tim Wolfe recently resigned in the face of growing protests by African-American students, the threat of a walkout by faculty, and a strike by football players who said his administration failed to combat campus racism. Ousted! I was going to write about Tom Brady, but events in the “Show Me State” compelled otherwise. The first headlines re: Wolfe’s resignation raised questions about what egregious conduct had required him to step down. It turns out that his crime was “inadequate responsiveness” to campus activists on the issue of combatting racism at the University of Missouri in Columbia. And the tipping point came when the African-American gridsters at Mizzou threatened not to play football unless Wolfe quit.

Recently resigned University of Missouri president Tim Wolfe. There are fascinating aspects to all this. Is there rampant racism at Mizzou? I don’t know. No doubt there have been incidents of bad behavior. That’s inevitable at any large university campus. Let light be shined on the whole situation and let the truths emerge. And a measure of skepticism is often appropriate when dealing with emotional campus activists, including those in Columbia. The football component of the Mizzou equation underscores the power that scholarship athletes can wield when they so-choose. Faculty activists had earlier called for Wolfe’s resignation, to no avail, but when the football Tigers weighed in, Wolfe walked out. Mizzou Coach Gary Pinkel tweeted his support for

his players, but according to USA TODAY that support did not mean he wanted Wolfe to resign. With Missouri in last place in the Southeastern Conference, Pinkel surely didn’t need the distraction. Time will tell if getting involved in campus politics unites or divides the Tiger gridsters. But the events in Columbia affirm the potential power that football players can wield, and athletes (and coaches!) around the country certainly took notice. Last year the football players at Northwestern University sought (unsuccessfully) to unionize, and that may have inspired whoever led the Tiger players to revolt. The Missouri machinations probably revived See moffett on 30

ANNUAL

The Regal Cardinal by Steve White Contributing Writer

As one of the most recognized songbirds in North America, the cardinals are also known for many virtues. They are one of the few wild birds that are monogamous throughout the year. They assist in pest control by feeding on destructive insects such as potato beetles, cotton boil weevils and cucumber beetles. Their natural diet consists of over 100 different weed seeds so this brilliant bird could also be considered economically valuable to many gardeners. Have you ever noticed a cardinal eating at your feeder? These unique songbirds prefer black oil sunflower and safflower seeds. They roll the seed around with their tongue until it is sideways in their strong, cone-shaped beaks. Then they crack it open along the seam and ditch the hull before swallowing the meat of each seed. C ard i n a l s e nj o y approaching each feeder with a royal attitude. They do not join in the chatter other species create in gatherings, such as sparrows or finches. Cardinals simply dine with their mate in a sort of majestic splendor. The word “cardinal originally meant important and was applied to the official rank in the Catholic Church. Cardinal became associated with the bright red robes and the pointed red hat of that impressive office. Upon seeing this red bird with the pointed crest for the first time,

early American naturalists were reminded of the church officials and began to name this regal bird, the cardinal. During the cold months, the male cardinal will dominate the feeders. His mate will usually ignore him and simply do her own feeding. Come springtime, however, the male turns into a doting partner. The cardinal courtship ritual involves mate feeding. The male hops over to her, tilts his head sideways and places the morsel in her bill. Her acceptance of this offering completes their unique ritual. Cardinals breed from March to August, with up to four broods in a season. Two broods, however, are the accepted norm. While the female begins the next nest, the male takes on the feeding responsibilities for the last brood. This species of songbirds truly compliment each other in the rearing of the young. The cardinal is the official State bird for seven states. Rarely seen as far north as Pennsylvania in the early 20th century, its year round range now includes the Canadian border. They live generally in areas where both trees and berry producing shrubs exist. This habitat closely resembles the average home owner’s backyard, hence the success of the expansion of the cardinals realm. So, kudos to all backyard birders. Enjoy your birds! DEAR TIM: I have an unusual narrow roof valley against a dormer where snow builds up, turns to ice and then leaks into my house. The shingles look fine, so I’m wondering if the water is coming in through some wood siding that forms one side of this roof canyon. That’s what I call it. The snow can get up to 3 feet deep here in the dead of winter. How can I determine where the leak is coming from? What’s the best way to stop all water from entering the house? Trying to remove the snow is very problematic, so please don’t tell me that I must do that. --Victor C., Ontario, Canada DEAR VICTOR: Even though you live in Canada, the advice I’m about to offer you will help someone in sunny Florida or any other place where winddriven howling rainstorms cause roof leaks. This is a rare one-size-fits-all answer about roof leaks. The photo you sent tells the entire story. Photos allow me to really see what’s going on and give you the best advice. I have to say, you sure do have a “roof

Snow builds up in this roof canyon and causes leaks in the winter. canyon that will cause all sorts of leaks if the roofing is not installed by a real professional familiar with the weather conditions in your area. I was lucky to start my building career in an old city where many of the houses were built in the late 1800s. I rarely would find a roof detail like yours. I feel this is because roofers back then knew that it was quite hard to prevent leaks like the one you’re having. Part of this was because they didn’t have access to the modern underlayments we have, and the solution they did have most regular people couldn’t afford. When roofers of old faced very challenging

roof details like yours, where a wall and two roof planes all come together much like a kitchen funnel, they’d use sheets of copper soldered together to create a waterproof roof covering in this area. If copper was too expensive, flat locked tin-plated steel was a great substitute. The only issue with the tin is that it required periodic painting to keep it in perfect condition. No matter what material was used, it was a very labor intensive process and only the wealthy could afford it. Well, it just keeps getting better here in New Hampshire these days. Fall is fading quickly and we are headed into that long winter hibernation. But with each passing day, we await a new treat from our local breweries. This is the season (as stated before), to try bold and interesting brew creations. And with that, introducing NH’s newest addition: Big Water Brewery. Big Water, is located at 24 Robie Rd, Salisbury, NH, and run by Ben Jones. He is one of the rare breed that brew, bottle and selfdistribute their offerings to the public. Less than 6 months old, Big Water is the kind of brewery that is starting off small with terrific recipes that have been tweaked for success. These include Belgian Double and Triple, Aztec Ale, Aztec Porter, Blueberry Cream Ale, Imperial Stout and our review beer, Barley Wine. Most of these are limited releases as he is still in the ramp-up stages. Visit them at or their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BigWaterBrewery As you might have surmised, this reviewer is smitten with bigger beers; stouts, porters and barleywines. This is not to say that lighter beer is out of the picture, it’s just the season to check out the deeper varieties. Big Water Barley Wine is quite smooth and malty to the nose. In this 22 oz bottle rests a wide montage of smells, tasting notes and complexities

D.A. LONG TAVERN that will enchant you. It’s deep, dark ruby (almost brown) color hardly lets light pass through your goblet. The rich and thick mocha head lasts through your sips, lacing the glass as you enjoy the experience. When you open this bottle, know that you are opening a 1.5 year old beer, aged to perfection! Initial tastes are of dark, sweet malts, boozy with dark fruit such as raisons or plums, and earthy, like the smells of the forest after a rain. Mouthfeel of this one is medium to full bodied. Fruit remains after you partake and only a hint of bittering follows through. At 10% ABV, this may just be your onebeer-night. The complexity of this beer will trap and hold you long after you have completed the contents. Consider picking up an

extra sample of this a beer to age in the cool depths of your cellar, it is that good! Folks on both BeerAdvocate.com and Untappd. com have all unofficially rated this one over 4.0+ out of 5.0, so you can imagine how popular this brewery will be soon. You can find this and many more at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia and other fine craft beer providers. But remember, this is a limited release... go and try this and other offerings from Big Water Brewery and support local beer! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com

Anyone who has been following the artists of LRAA will agree that they are an integral part of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. From featured artists at local businesses to gallery shows to training by guest artists at meetings, LRAA is thriving and growing. The latest LRAA news is a phenomenal art gallery at the Tanger Outlets in Tilton. The LRAA team, headed by president Jean Kennedy and now gallery director Pat Anderson, said an emphatic “YES” to the offer of the space. This involved the board quickly obtaining the agreement of LRAA artists to support the gallery. Support involves gallery sitting and other financial responsibilities involved in running a gallery. In what seemed like a nanosecond, the empty space was filled with incredible art works! If you did not attend the opening on November 7 and 8, despair not. The gallery will be open through December and may become a permanent presence well into the future. What does this mean for you? It means you can find unique gifts for the holidays. Unique is defined as venturing away from mass produced objects and supporting local creatives. It means you can select a one of a kind gift for hard to shop for folks on your list. It might be a paradigm shift in holiday shopping. However, that will be en-

If you have not collected art in the past, treating yourself to a work of art is a profound event. To select a work of art is to make a conscious choice to add art to your home or office. The art you select will enhance your environs each and every day. The images on your walls have the potential to create the uniqueness of what makes you you! Having a truly meaningful environment to live and work in is what art will provide. Another opportunity for you is that some of the artists are available to do commissions of specific works of art. If you need a

particular piece, you can contact the artist you are interested in and ask. Portraits, images of particular flora or fauna, a place that holds special memories are all possibilities. The LRAA gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays 12-8 and Sundays 10-6 and is located a few doors down from the LOFT Outlet and across from the Chocolate Factory. There are paintings, prints, cards and more. Please take a stroll in to the gallery. Ask questions! The gallery is run by artists and they will be happy to share their knowledge. And no green thumb is needed for this DIY holiday beauty. Easy care waxed amaryllis bulbs (gardeners.com) are self contained and easy to grow. The bulb is sealed in gold or silver wax, making it both decorative and low maintenance. There’s no watering or container needed. Just set it in a bright location and wait for the floral display to appear before your eyes. You’ll be enjoying big blooms for several weeks. Stay on your diet as the holiday approaches with a sugar-free advent calendar. You can make your own from felt and fabric glue or start a family tradition by purchasing a handcrafted advent calendar like the wooden bird cottage advent calendar (gardeners.com) that celebrates nature and the holiday. Each day leading to Christmas you’ll remove a bird from its cubby in the cottage. Peg it to the birdhouse and watch the flock grow. Your friends and family will know Christmas is coming each year when you

break out the calendar. It’s sure to provide years of memories and could soon become a family heirloom. Yesterday across the Presidential Range from Mizpah Hut to Madison Hut was the best day of hiking of my entire life anytime anywhere hands down. I tried not to worry on the many days he did not post news. Early along the trail Carey picked up his trail name and became known as Beerman. It is definitely a trail name that inspires fun. Carey Kish and his wife Fran on the shore of Wachipauka Pond in Warren, NH. The mountain pond is located along the Appalachian Trail/Wachipauka Pond Trail that runs between Rte 25 and Rte 25C. The AT travels through New Hampshire from the Connecticut River in Hanover to the Maine State Line on the Mahoosuc Trail between Carey Kish atop Mount Katahdin in Maine and the completion of the Appalachian Trail for the second time, 38 years after his first successful AT thru hike. he crowed that from this point on he knew every mile of the trail and he didn’t need a map or a guide. Carey continued to be blessed with good weather and found dry trails where he expected to wade through wet muddy trails. Panoramic grand vistas awaited him on every mountain top. Weather was key to his success; during the last six weeks he was on the trail there were only 5 or 6 rainy days. Fran met Carey in Monson, Maine just before he began Maine’s famed 100-mile Wilderness. I don’t think they had been together since their visit with us in Franconia in August. A little more than a week later she’d be waiting for him at the base of Katahdin. This fairy tale has a happy ending. The Beer-

man hasn’t put away his boots. Together with his wife Fran they’re redlining Acadia’s hiking trails— hiking all 120 miles of the Acadia’s trails that begin right outside their home’s backdoor. Carey Kish is the editor of the 10th AMC Maine Mountain Guide and is working on the 11th edition. His new book, AMC’s Best Day Hikes along the Maine Coast, is now available at your favorite bookstore. I look forward to his future books on the Appalachian Trail and the Maine 100 Mile Wilderness. I asked Carey if he had any advice for me if I ever found the gumption to hike from Katahdin to Franconia and he told me, “That’s easy Amy, just follow the white blazes and put one foot in front of the other day after day. Happy Trails Beerman.

dam quite like Hoover Dam, but a much smaller. Most roofing materials are designed to work under the influence of gravity. The materials are typically layered with each successive course overlapping the one below it as the materials march up the roof. The ice dam causes water to build up under each layer and it doesn’t take long for it to overflow the top of a layer, find gaps in the wood sheathing and pour into your home. The underlayment I used on my house sticks to the wood sheathing and it sticks to itself. When installed according to the manufacturer’s written installation instructions, it forms a waterproof barrier under the finished roofing that covers it. My membrane is so good that it seals to the nail shafts that are used to secure the finished roofing to the sheathing. It’s an amazing product. To fix your leaks permanently, you need to strip off your existing roofing down to the wood sheathing. You need to remove the finished siding on the sides of the dormer. The membrane needs to be installed as they say in the instructions and it needs to lap up at least a foot or more on the

sides of the dormer to ensure you never have a leak along that wall. Consider covering the entire side wall of the dormer to the deepest depth snow can build up in this area of the roof. I urge you to get the written installation instructions of the Grace product, read them and understand them. If you can’t inspect the work as the roofer is doing it, ask him to take lots of photos as he installs each piece of the membrane. Remember, this membrane needs to start low, and each successive piece overlaps the one below it. You want to make sure the membrane is perfect before it gets hidden by the finished roofing. If the roofer wants a few extra dollars for the effort of taking the photos, it’s well worth it. You want to approve the membrane before the roofer proceeds with the final roofing. Be very careful about accepting a substitute membrane, no matter what the roofer says. Not all waterproofing membranes are the same! Some do not stick well to themselves. Some do not seal around the nail shafts of the finished roofing that penetrate them. Trying to save a few hundred dollars here is being pennywise and pound foolish. Need an answer? wistful memories for greyhaired activists who came of age during the sixties, when student strikes were commonplace. As many of these liberal activists often lamented the extent of university resources invested in a violent maleonly sport like football, it’s ironic that a FOOTBALL team achieved the campus activist dream—ousting a university president. Speaking of the power that football has over presidents, consider that no U.S. President would EVER give a prime time speech or national address if it conflicted with Monday Night Football. Such a President would likely end up like President Wolfe. Ousted!

CONGRATS TO TIM KNEUER! Laconia’s Timmy Kneur is a standout runner on the NHTI-Concord Cross Country team. He’s also a serious college student with a 3.76 Grade Point Average, and was honored with Academic AllAmerica honors at the USCAA nationals. He received his award from legendary runner Jim Ryun, whose 3:51.1 time for the mile was a world record for years. An Olympic medalist in 1968, Ryun later ran for congress in Kansas— and won.
