In 2009, the first year for Pub Mania, a 24-hour barstool event at Patrick’s Pub to raise money for the Lakes Region Children’s Auction, raised a then amazing $47,000. Last year the organizers and teams presented the charity with a breathtaking check for $235,000 (above). This year, its seventh, the courtesy Photo event is looking to break the one million dollar mark in total funds raised.

Pub Mania Teams Going For A Million And It’s All For The Kids by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It was 1982 when WLNH radio host Warren Bailey had the idea for a two-day fundraiser for the Citizen Santa Fund that helped Lakes Region families and children at Christmas time. It raised $2100 in two days. Last year, that fund now known as The Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction raised an amazing $486,000 with nearly half of that - $235,000 - being raised by Pub Mania, a

twenty-four hour event at Patrick’s Pub and Eatery in Gilford, that is looking to break that mark at this year’s event which takes place on December 10th and 11th. Allan Beetle, co-owner of Patrick’s, never thought that the idea for Pub Mania, which began in 2009, would ever grow to the extent it has today. “I got the idea when I was involved in a stationary bike cycling fundraiser at Laconia Athletic and Swim Club back in 2008,” said Beetle.

It was there that “Mad Dog” Mike Gallagher was going for the world record and raising funds by cycling for twenty-four straight hours. Other groups were invited to participate by fielding teams who would take turns cycling with Mike for the length of the event, each team member going for an hour. “As captain it was hard for me to find someone to fill the 2am shift, so I did it myself,” said Beetle. It was while cycling that Allan got into a discussion with the cyclist next to him

about how he could take the same format but using bar stools and Pub Mania was born. The format is that there are 30 teams (27 that first year) with twenty-four members each take turns sitting on a bar stool for an hour. That first year each team was asked to try and raise about $1,000 through pledges for the Children’s Auction. “We were hoping to raise about $25,000 that first year,” said Beetle who along with his brother and co-

owner Jeff Beetle and their wives and others served as the referees for the event. To their amazement, once they totaled up the monies from that first yearm they had amassed an incredible $47,000. See pubmania on 32

His biggest inspiration to start writing came from a discovery of the author John Hart, who writes complex characters and realistic plots. Christmas Open House ‘40s Style The Rochester Historical Society’s annual Christmas Open House, A 1940s Christmas, will be held on Thursday, December 10, from 1 to 5pm at the Historical Society Museum on Hanson Street in downtown Rochester. One Day At A Time

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an old expression that goes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today is the first day of the rest of your life.â&#x20AC;? Being a guy that likes to live more in the moment, I constantly adjust this expression to fit my needs for the particular time I am experiencing. Currently I am looking at each day as the first day of the rest of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas shopping season. I like to look at each day as such because, psychologically, when you convince yourself that it is the first day, that means there are many days to follow and, if you are a procrastinator like myself, then you always have plenty of time to get things done. Yes, Christmas shopping is a lot like life itself. Of course in Christmas shopping, as in life, you will stop one day, look at yourself in the mirror and say: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where the heck did all the time go?â&#x20AC;? It is usually around this point that you will force yourself to take the time to sit down and make a comprehensive list of either your lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals going forward or what gifts you will need to buy which can be bought within a five-mile radius of each other because, well, time is now running out. Once you have written your lists you need to get to work. Whether it is that novel that has been

bouncing around in your head for the past fifteen years, finally taking those piano lessons or learning that language, losing that hard to get rid of ten pounds, or finding that elusive unique gift of clothing that your wife has been hinting at that sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like for Christmas, you realize that the time is now and, yes, today, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really the first day of the rest of your life or Christmas shopping any longer. Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made this realization and procrastinated a bit longer while making the lists themselves, it is finally time to take action, as painful as that can sometimes be. You know that there is work to be done and time is running short. You realize that even though your intentions are good and you are getting down to the nitty gritty, there will still be many diversions along the way to distract you from your final goal. In life, as in Christmas shopping, speaking from my own experience, there is always going to be an electronics store that you will have to pass through on your way to the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s c l o t h i n g outlet where you will have to search for that unique clothing item. If you can keep your focus and eyes on the real prize, there may still be time to come back and stare at that 64-inch HD Smart TV which you know you really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any room for in the first place. In Christmas shopping as in life, you may put your nose to the grindstone now that you realize time is running out and work really hard at what you want. You ignored the electronics store (and even those cool kiosks with all that weird stuff that seems

cool at the time but will soon be collecting dust) and focused on the prize, but that unique piece of clothing is nowhere left to be seen; the racks have been picked clean by those who got an earlier start. Some may feel defeated, realizing that they gave too much too late and let it bring them down. Others may just pick out something else and settle for second best. The rest of us can use it as a learning tool. We realize that there will be other opportunities in life to grab that elusive golden ring and that the next time we will be ready, we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sit back and we will take action and not fall into that â&#x20AC;&#x153;First Dayâ&#x20AC;? mentality that got us into so much trouble before. Next year we will get an earlier start. As for me, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hoping that by writing this insightful article that it will serve as the perfect excuse when that unique article of clothing, or whatever else I start out too late once again this year to buy, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appear under the Christmas tree. After all, it did take me most of the day to write it and now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s late and, well, tomorrow is another day. Destroy Islamic Terrorists in Syria To The Editor: The Western world has to go into Syria and Iraq to eliminate ISIS. ISIS has established a caliphate, and if we destroy it in Syria and Iraq its tentacles in other countries will hopefully tend to wither away. The Islamic terrorists in Europe take their instructions from ISIS in Syria, and maybe we can draw the terrorists in other parts of the world back to Syria where they can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the West (U.S., Great Britain, France, etc.) and some Arab countries have to put together a coalition for a large scale military operation against ISIS. Opening day at Loon Mountain was on November 24th, with the Gondola providing top to bottom skiing. There is still time to get a good deal for a season’s pass at your favorite resort but hurry for the best deal. 4pm. I wanted to go but it was such short notice. Man, oh, man, are the kids “DEMAND”-y these days! Whoops, kids, did I offend you with “Man, oh, man?” I plead guilty to “cisheteropatriarchy.” Also: ageism! Prosecute me for serial microaggressions and throw me in the safe-space violators’ slammer. But I micro-aggress-digress. The current list of campuses represented on TheDemands. Org includes 37 institutions of higher learning. Or rather, higher moaning. I’m calling the website the Social Justice Warrior Entitlement Mob Tracker. It’s a useful database of progressive brats who are part of a clearly coordinated “Black Lives Matter” hijacking of American colleges and universities (with a few Canadian groupies tagging along). Whatever legitimate complaints these privileged -- yes, you are privileged to be attending college in America in the 21st century -- students may have had, they’ve utterly beclowned themselves with their

over-the-top hysterics. Leading the list is the University of Missouri, which claimed the scalps of the school’s president and chancellor last week for insufficient attention to alleged bias incidents and drunken catcalls. It wasn’t enough. Never enough. The Mizzou mob is also demanding a new race-based hiring quota increase for “black faculty and staff members campus-wide by 10 percent” and an increase in “funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals, particularly those of color.” Shakedown godfathers Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have taught their protesting progeny well. At Amherst College, the “uprisers” are pressuring the president to make -- take a deep breath -- a “statement of apology to students, alumni and former students, faculty, administration and staff who have been victims of several injustices including but not limited to our institutional legacy of white supremacy, colonialism, anti-black racism, anti-Latinx racism, anti-Native American racism, anti-Native/ indigenous racism, anti-Asian racism, antiMiddle Eastern racism, heterosexism, cis-sexism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism, mental health stigma, and classism.” Alas, there’s no safe space from coddled, overly verbose narcissists. UN Committee Slams North Korean Rights Abuses UNITED NATIONS—

In a stern and sweeping rebuke to North Korea’s human rights abuses, a UN Committee has slammed by John J. Metzler the repressive Syndicated Columnist communist regime in an annual report on “The Situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.” In a vote of 112 in favor, and 19 against, with 50 abstentions, the Third Committee (political) passed a resolution which once again keeps international pressure on Pyongyang in the midst of an impending visit to the reclusive country by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The report “condemns the longstanding and ongoing systematic, widespread and gross violations of human rights” in the quaintly titled Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Countries supporting the resolution included the USA, Canada, Japan and South Korea along with the members of the European Union and large majorities in Latin America. The nineteen member opposition to the resolution included the usual suspects ranging from Cuba and Mainland China to Russia, Sudan and Venezuela and of course North Korea. Among fifty abstentions were Ethiopia, South Africa and Singapore.

“Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including inhuman conditions of detention: rape, public executions, arbitrary detention, the imposition of the death penalty for political and religious reasons, collective punishment extending up to three generations; and the extensive use of forced labor,” are among the findings of the UN most recent survey. The document underscores the DPRK’s “extensive system of political prison camps, where a vast number of persons are deprived of their liberty and subjected to deplorable conditions.” Human rights campaigners have documented a large number of labor and detention camps similar to the former Soviet gulag system. The survey equally underscores a unique feature of the DPRK, the songbun system which categorizes citizens by the State assigned, “social class and birth, and also includes consideration of political opinions and religions.” In addition, people with disabilities are targeted by the regime which uses forced relocation, and often “collective camps” for disabled people. Equally, the document decries the increasing use of human trafficking as well as “forced abortions and other forms of gender based violence.” As part of the wider focus on the DPRK human rights situation, the resolution encourages the UN Security Council to keep

its consideration on the referral of the regime to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Significantly the document welcomes the opening of a field office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Seoul, South Korea. The Seoul office aims at “enhanced engagement” and advocacy for human rights cases. Naturally while most of the international community presses

for an opening or even a glimmer of good news on the human rights situation in North Korea, it’s highly unlikely that the hermetically sealed country is about to allow many forms of openness as it fears the contagion of cultural and media contact with neighboring South Korea’s democracy. In a sense, contemporary North Korea resembles See Metzler on 28

Political Translations It is amazing how many different ways the same thing can be said, creating totally different impressions. For example, when President Baby Thomas Sowell rack Obama Syndicated Columnist says that defeating ISIS is going to take a long time, how is that different from saying that he is going to do very little, very slowly? It is saying the same thing in different words. Defenders of the administration’s policies may cite how many aerial sorties have been flown by American planes against ISIS. There have been thousands of these sorties, which sounds very impressive. But what is less impressive -and more indicative -- is that, in most of those sorties, the planes have not fired a single shot or dropped a single bomb. Why? Because the rules of engagement are so restrictive that in most circumstances there is little that the pilot is allowed to do, unless circumstances are just right, which they seldom are in any war. Moreover, the thousands of sorties being flown are still a small fraction of the number of sorties flown in the same amount of time during the Iraq war, when American leaders were serious about getting the war won. Politics produces lots of words that can mean very different things, if you stop and think

about them. But politicians depend on the fact that many people don’t bother to stop and think about them. We often hear that various problems within the black community are “a legacy of slavery.” That phrase is in widespread use among people who believe in the kinds of welfare state programs that began to dominate government policies in the 1960s. Blaming social problems today on “a legacy of slavery” is another way of saying, “Don’t blame our welfare state policies for things that got worse after those policies took over. Blame what happened in earlier centuries.” Nobody would accept that kind of cop-out, if it were expressed that way. But that is why it is expressed differently, as a “legacy of slavery.” If we were being serious, instead of being political, we could look at the facts. Were the kinds of problems we are concerned about in black communities today as bad during the first century after slavery or in the first generation after the vastly expanded welfare state? What about children being raised with no father in the home? As of 1960, nearly a century after slavery ended, 22 percent of black children were being raised in single-parent families. Thirty years later, 67 percent of all black children were being raised in singleparent families. What about violence? As of 1960, homicide rates among See Sowell on 31

Well, we’re now into December, and the entire Live and Let Live Farm community hopes you all had a safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday with your loved ones and families. As we continue to accelerate deeper into the holiday season, it is our wish that warmth, happiness, and safety, carry you all through New Years and into 2016. Next month, January, I’ll be writing a full summary of all the highlights of the goings on at the rescue in 2015 (and believe me, there’s a lot!), but for now I want to tell you about another wonderful program that has taken place at LLLF. The PRLI “Patriot Resilience Leader Institute”, Camp Resilience, has coordinated with LLLF’s HHHRA “Heather’s Healing Humans with Rescue Animals” to bring healing and restoration to a small group of wounded warrior veterans, through the Veteran Equine Retreat… a therapeutic connection with some of the rescued horses on our farm. Be-

cause of their individual histories, many of the horses have endured their own form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, so in many ways this is an ideal, mutually symbiotic match. Working with rescued

horses fosters resiliency leading to growth and well being for the participants and the horses. This is not a horseback riding program, it is an experience designed to bring about life changes through See Philbrick on 29

FROM JOHNNY FOOTBALL TO JOHNNY ROTTEN NEWS ITEM: The Associated Press reported that Cleveland Brown quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel was benched by coach Mike Pettine for his off-field behavior. Manzielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s benching came in the wake of his latest miniscandal, where a video showed him wielding a bottle of champagne while rapping profane lyrics at an Austin, Texas nightclub. Most readers of this column were athletes once, and youngâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;youngsters who dreamed of playing in the big leagues someday. But that dream faded and at some point died for all of us. (Except for Concordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Matt Bonner, now in his 12th NBA season!) But our love of sports endured and we became fans, coaches, golfers, and columnists as we watched the ultimate reality showsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sports telecasts. The allure of big time sports included money, fame, validation, and the satisfaction that goes with developing oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skills to the highest levels. We live vicariously through the experiences and exploits of those who DO make it to â&#x20AC;&#x153;the show.â&#x20AC;? In our last article, we described how an extensive 4 year wild bird feeding study by Professor Margaret Brittingham from the University of Wisconsin was conducted from 19841988. This study was set up to track the survival rate of two distinct, controlled groups of chickadees during two straight winters. One banded group had sunflower seed feeders removed after 20 years of existence. The other banded group of birds, verified outside the accepted range of the feeder group, had never received their food sources through human contact. The winters were average in terms of temperature, snow cover and wind conditions. In terms of survival rates, which were about 85%, the exhaustive study concluded that there was no marked difference between the two groups of chickadees. The other 15% were presumed to have perished, since chickadees remain in the same area throughout a winter. Birds that had used feeders in the past were no less able to survive on a natural food supply, even though feeders were constantly available for the preceding 20 years. This is not surprising. During the preceding two winters, at the site where there were sunflower seed feeders, the banded chickadees were tracked as they obtained some 79% of their daily rations from natural food sources. Chickadees are truly opportunistic. In winter, they will search out insect eggs and larvae, mites and other anthropods, seeds, carcass remains and all sorts of available energy sources.

Do Feeders Create Dependency? -Part 2 Both the controlled and experimental sites were in relatively undisturbed rural locations in Wisconsin composed primarily of deciduous woods. The study did not see what the effect would be if the feeders were suddenly removed or left empty right in the middle of winter. However, birds are used to food sources disappearing in winter, due to snow, ice or foraging by other birds. There is one interesting note about the study. It was determined that during abnormally severe weather conditions, five days or more of temperatures below 18° F, there was a marked difference in survival of the controlled group of chickadees. Birds with access to feeders maintained higher weights and were able to replace depleted energy reserves with minimal foraging. During periods of extreme cold, the ability to get a large amount of

energy in a short period of time with minimum effort may be critical to the survival of the weak and older chickadees. Logically, this holds true for humans as well. According to the Brewer’s Association, there are over 6,000 breweries in the United States today. There are over 50 in our state of NH. That’s a lot of beer. From IPA’s to lagers, from stouts to brown ales, the possibilities are endless. So what does one eat with all this beer? Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Co. is here to help. On Thursday, December 10th, Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Co. invites you to a Beer Pairing Dinner starting at 7pm. That’s right. This five-course event will help you answer that age-old question of which tasty beer to drink with which delicious dish. Scott Travis, the Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Co. master brewer, will be at the dinner to talk about his craft beers.

“It’s a fun opportunity to try five of our beers and experience how they match up with different dishes,” said Travis. “Each course is paired up to bring out the best in both the beer and the food flavors.” The Beer Pairing Dinner menu is available on the Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Co. Facebook page. Tickets are $30 and available at Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Co. or by calling Hobbs at 539-2000. The Beer Pairing Dinner will be held upstairs in the barn. Following their long-time dream of owning a brewery, Erwin and Nataly Agner opened in 2012. Pouring the Altbier from the 22 oz bottle into a pint glass was slightly challenging since there was tremendous head retention the likes of which I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen before. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll first notice its depth of color; a deep gorgeous chestnut brown. The sparkling tan head stays throughout your pint with generous lacing. Malty with roasted grains meet your nose before your first sip. Coffee and malty mouthfeel remain as you enjoy this brew, with a medium body, a touch of sweetness, while finishing with a typical dryness. A slightly discernible and late hop finish is also an example of this style. At 4.9%, Altbier wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bite back but just give you a

warm hug. BeerAdvocate.com has officially rated this one 3.6 out of 5.0 while other contributing folks gave equal or higher praises to this Altbier. You can find this and the three other Agner & Wolf brews at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia and other fine craft beer providers. Try all four of their offerings to which will be your favorite! Paris -- and more broadly France and the West -- needs more surveillance of suspected terrorists and police raids; a more restrictive immigration policy that doesn’t create large, unassimilated Muslim populations, or welcome terrorists as refugees; and a serious, multilayered campaign to destroy ISIS and deny it the safe havens from which it recruits and trains, and plots against the West. If someone can come up with a catchy symbol for that, I’ll embrace it (although “La Marseillaise” isn’t so bad: “To arms citizens/Form your battalions/March, march”). Meanwhile, spare me the #PrayforParis hashtag. Forgive me if I’m unmoved by lighting up world landmarks in red,

white and blue, or your putting a tricolor filter on your Facebook profile picture. And please don’t tell me, in the words of the designer Jean Jullien, that “in all this horror there’s something positive that people are coming together in a sense of unity and peace.” Nothing positive comes from innocents getting shot down in cold blood for the offense of going to a concert on a Friday night. If there aren’t going to be more -- and worse -attacks in our cities, the path ahead won’t be one of unity and peace. It will be the hard, thankless work of protecting civilization from its enemies. “spring 2016.” Not to be overlooked, social justice painters and papier mache protesters made sure to include Demand No. 7 from St. Louis University: “Mutually agreed upon commissioned artwork.” Unlike revolutionaries of past eras who cast off their shackles and demanded that their oppressors leave them alone, the 21st century insurgents demand that their indulgent overseers wipe their tears, hold their hands, and provide them roundthe-clock therapy. At Princeton, liberal professors and administrators patted themselves on the back for assuaging hurt feelings and eliminating the age-old tradition of calling college heads “masters.” (Apparently, “master’s degrees” are safe. For now.) But it wasn’t enough. Never enough. The “Black Justice League” barged into the Ivy League school’s president’s office this week demanding full eradication of every reference to progressive racial segregationist Woodrow Wilson at Princeton; “cultural competency training for all staff and faculty”; a racially segregated safe space “dedicated specifically to Black students” who oppose racial segregation (except for themselves); and “classes on the history of marginalized peoples” because “[l]earning about marginalized groups, their cultures, and structures of privilege is just as important as any science or quantitative reasoning course.” Uh-huh. When academic courses get demanding, the weak-minded get demand-y. Listening to the ululations of their own entitled, endless bleating is much more appealing and healing, after all, than multivariate analysis, synthetic organic chemistry or mechanical engineering. The New York-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF) recently launched an international coalition to support the North Korea Human Rights Act, a bill which when passed by national parliaments promotes greater awareness of North Korean human rights abuses to “create a specific North Korean human rights archive to collect, record, and preserve cases of human rights violations; and most importantly, authorize material and monetary support for South Korean civil society groups who tirelessly support victims of the North.” The legislation is now set to pass the South Korean parliament in Seoul where the bill has “sat in political limbo for the last ten years,” according to HRF. North Korea’s system remains frozen in a bizarre Marxist monarchy of the Kim Family rule, now under Kim Jong-un, and views any openness or glimmers of political light as a profound danger to regime survival. When challenged by the successful example of South Korea, literally next door, the threat becomes all the more acute. So while the majority of UN member states call upon North Korea to open up, Pyongyang pushes back with a sullen indifference and hiding behind its nuclear arsenal. The visit to Kim’s reclusive hermit kingdom by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, a fellow South Korean, may offer just the right inducement to break the humanitarian logjam. ***************** John J. In mid November, eight wounded veterans, guided by four PRLI facilitators, arrived at LLLF and began working with their chosen horses, one on one. For three days— Saturday, Sunday and Monday— the human-and-horse teams worked together, connecting, and bringing about healing for both horse and human. Days ran from about 9:00 am until about 5:00 pm, and the participants reported finding it to be very effective and fulfilling. As one veteran who participated said, “it makes us feel like life isn’t steamrolling us anymore.” LLLF Executive Director Teresa Paradis reports that it was so successful that dates have already been set for April and November of 2016, and all parties are looking forward to seeing how the program enriches the lives of many more humans and animals. The days started with group discussion and advanced to spending time

with the rescued horses in different scenarios. By day three the Veterans lead their horse partners to the horse playground working on trail games. It’s exciting and invigorating to see the seeds of ideas land, take root, and with the right cultivating, grow and mature and ultimately produce fruit. And it’s an honor and privilege to be part of something so big and so meaningful, to veterans who have given so much. We all know the statistics regarding the numbers— wounded military personnel returning from combat theaters. And we all know the need for innovative and costeffective ways to meet their needs. We’re hoping that this new program at LLLF will go a long way toward making a significant difference in the lives of these individuals and the rescued horses, as well. non-white males had gone down by 22 percent during the preceding decade. But, during the decade of the 1960s, that trend suddenly reversed, and the homicide rate shot up by 76 percent. The welfare state vision was often part of a larger, non-judgmental social vision that was lenient on criminals and hard on the police. Few people today know that marriage rates and rates of labor force participation were once higher among blacks than among whites -- all of this during the first century after slavery. In later years, a reversal occurred, largely in the wake of the welfare state expansions that began in the 1960s. Another fashionable phrase that evades any need for evidence is â&#x20AC;&#x153;disparate impactâ&#x20AC;? -- a legal phrase accepted in the Supreme Court of the United States, despite being downright silly when you stop and think about it. Whenever there is some standard for being hired, promoted or admitted to a college, some groups may meet that stan-

dard more so than others. One way of expressing that is to say that more of the people from group X meet the standard than do people from group Y. But politically correct people exp ress th e same thing by saying that the standard has a â&#x20AC;&#x153;disparate impactâ&#x20AC;? on group Y. Once it is expressed this way, it is the standard that is suspect -- and whoever set that standard has to prove a negative, namely that he is not guilty of discrimination against group Y. Often nobody can prove anything, so the accused loses -or else settles out of court.

Stupid? No. It takes very clever people to make something like that sound plausible. But it also requires people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother to stop and think, who enable them to get away with it. As much fun as Pub Mania is for the 720 team members who take part, they all know the best part is really that it is all for the kids. pubmania from 1

“It was a shock,” said Beetle. “When we brought the check down to the Auction that Saturday it just blew everyone’s minds. We knew then and there that something special was going on here and it wasn’t all because of the money but it was also the spirit that was involved from everyone who participated and came to the event. We were having fun and making a difference as well.” Now in its seventh year, and each year breaking the record of the last, Pub Mania has raised a total of $797,760 and the hope is to go over the one million dollar mark with this year’s event. “We really haven’t changed the format since

that first year,” said Beetle, “Except for a few tweaks we pretty much got it right from the start and we have gotten a little more creative.” The event starts with opening ceremonies at 9am on Thursday, where The Beetle Bailey Band (Allan Beetle and Shawn Bailey) sing a song called “Pub Maniacs Answer The Call” where they acknowledge not just all those who are participating but also “Mad Dog” Gallagher and Warren Bailey who are the inspirations for the event. Over the next twenty-four hours there are a series of events for team members to participate in from Poetry Hour to Ugly Sweater Contests to a Santa Belly

The first Pub Mania at Patrick’s Pub in Gilford raised, what was then, an amazing $47,000. Contest. There is a Karaoke Hour, Lip Sync Hour, Talent Hour, Barstool Yoga and Pajam Hour to name a few. “Some of the most fun we have is the late night to predawn hours,” said Beetle. “One of the referee’s jobs is to watch how much teams participate as we do present an award for that at the end.” Said Beetle. “We really want to make it as fun for the participants as possible so they’ll keep coming back. Without

them we have no event and we truly appreciate them being part of it.” There will also be live entertainment throughout the event with seven groups of musicians donating their time to entertain. Of course, the best part of what the teams do is in raising funds for The Children’s Auction. “Some are doing their own fundraising events throughout the year and then bringing that with them for Pub Mania,” said Beetle. “It’s amazing what these teams do and they know it’s all for the kids.” The numbers over the past seven years have continued to amaze. 2009 -$47,000 raised an average of $1,499 per team. (Steven Smith & Associates /Laconia Atheletic & Swim were top teams with $3,600.) 2010 - $61,550 raised and an average of $1,893. (Steve Smith & Associates $6,214.) 2011 - $110,770 raised and an average of $3,476. (Supreme Marine $10,108.) 2012 - $165,300 raised and an average of $4,733. (Café Deja Vu $18,735.) 2013 - $177,545 raised and an average of $5,273. (Café Deja Vu $20,015.) 2104 - $235,000 raised with an average of $6,700. (Bonnette, Page & Stone $24,904.) Included in this amount was an anonymous

donation of $25,000. Patrick’s Pub also donated twenty percent of their gross sales for the day and is included in the final amounts. As Patrick’s Pub’s event became such a significant fundraiser for The Lakes Region Children’s Auction, Allan Beetle became a board member for the group and realizing the great work the non-profit does has only provided him with the impetus to see that Pub Mania continues to raise significant funds for the cause. “As a board member I am confident of the way the funds are handled and the way it goes to the community in not just meeting the basic needs of families and children but also in looking at the root causes of poverty and how to lift people out of poverty.” Allan is also hoping that the success of Pub Mania will catch on with others in New Hampshire. “I’d love to see this kind of idea be used by other businesses to raise funds for their favorite charities,” Said Beetle. You may be one of those readers who imagine everything is unicorns and rainbows at my own home. After all, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a seasoned builder. Each week I advise you about how to make the best decisions about products and building techniques so everything goes well at your home. So how could it be possible that I might suffer and struggle with a problem like you do? Well, this past summer suffer I did. I spent four months working on a steep, blisteringly hot roof replacing my failed asphalt shingles. Let me ask you now. Is your asphalt shingle roof in bad shape? Are you shocked because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gone bad long before its warranty is supposed to expire? My own expensive simulated shake asphalt shingles came with a 30year warranty. After just nine years they started to fail. Last winter I experienced catastrophic delamination of my shingles. Prior to that, the green ceramic granules were coming off faster than disgruntled fans streaming out of a stadium as their team suffers a drubbing.

These are 12-year-old shingles from my own home. They were supposed to last 30 years. Are you experiencing excessive loss of the colored ceramic granules? How about shingles curling on the edges? Are your shingles cracking? Are they brittle? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not alone if a recurring ad in my local small-town newspaper is a barometer. Every now and then a local builder/ roofer places an ad saying that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll inspect your failing asphalt shingle roof and assist you in filling out any claim papers. Last spring I spent some time doing online research and it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long to discover a spate of pending and settled class-action lawsuits against asphalt shingle manufacturers. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on? Why did my shingles fail, and why are yours in bad shape? I decided to look into it and tap into my 40plus years of experience in the building industry. I would not hesitate to testify in a deposition or

on a witness stand that, early in my building career, one rarely saw failures like you and I are seeing today. I worked on many an older home in the Midwest back in the mid-1970s and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ever recall seeing widespread curling of shingles or excessive granule loss. When you did see shingles in bad shape, it was often a roof that was long overdue for removal. I built a grand Queen Anne Victorian-style home for my family in 1986. At the time all I could afford were standard, plain vanilla 15-year-warranty three-tab shingles. These were the industry standard. After 23 years, they were still in very good condition and there were no roof leaks. My house didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have ridge vents or soffit vents. consider. Thousands of homes in my city, and possibly yours, were built the same way my house was, and the shingle roofs held up as well as my roof. But something happened in the roofing industry in the 1990s and 2000s. I just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t point to the smoking gun at this point, but I do have a few ideas. Approximately 12 years ago I was invited to visit an asphalt driveway sealer manufacturing plant. The first stop in the tour was a large chemistry lab where at least four scientists were hard at work. I was told the incoming rail tanker cars filled with asphalt all had to be tested because the asphalt was not all the same quality and had different chemical properties. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an interesting fact, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it? Asphalt shingle manufacturers blend things with the asphalt in your shingles. It says so clearly on the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association website. Go there and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see this: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fiberglass-based asphalt shingles are manufactured with mat composed entirely of glass fibers of varying lengths and orientations. This fiberglass

base is then surfaced with a specially formulated asphalt coating, followed by weather-resistant mineral granules.â&#x20AC;? What does â&#x20AC;&#x153;specially formulated asphalt coatingâ&#x20AC;? mean? This past summer I tried to find out and asked the association questions about this and other things. Guess what? They declined to answer my questions and suggested I contact the members of the association directly. I selected the top three association members, name brands you might recognize, and they all refused to answer my questions, too. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not cheap to replace an asphalt shingle roof. tossed it all in the back of my car. Skis, boots, poles and clothes I sang in my head to double check that I was set to go. My car’s gas tank was full and with that I hit the road. I did stop by the Canterbury rest area on I-93 just long enough to grab a couple copies of the Weirs Times from the paper box near the vending machines. I get my paper the same way you do. When I arrived the lot is full sign was posted at the entrance to the upper parking lot but I drove in anyway and

luckily found a spot in the middle. I lugged my gear to the slope side of the lodge and went in the lodge straight to the ticket booth. My donation was added to a large pile of food and in return I was handed a lift ticket. Certainly the mountain’s visitors had been generous. I think there was enough food to fill the back of a pickup truck. I got dressed as fast as I could and soon I was riding the lift. I was in a chair by myself and I spun around and took a good look around me. Mount Washington and

Bretton Woods will be delivering a lot of food to their local the Presidential Range’s food pantry. As many as 500 skiers and snowboarders mountaintops were blan- donated food items and were rewarded with an opening keted bright white with day lift ticket. The opening day food drive is annual event snow, but the rest of at Bretton Woods. the mountain sides were still dark and bare. In the distance below the mountains I could see the Mount Washington Hotel’s radiant red roof surrounded by the still green grass of the golf course. But right underneath the chairlift people were skiing and snowboarding on the man-made ribbon of snow on the mountain that covered the trail full width and top to bottom. The snow was wonderful

and my skis turned and glided with ease and any doubt that I should have stayed at work vanished. The snow was great and it was a lovely day. I met a few friends. I can’t name most of them because they should have been someplace else and didn’t want to let anyone know they were there. My friends, “Mr. and Mrs. John Doe” put their children on the school bus before jumping in their car to head to the



ski area. They would have skied until the lift closed but they had to be back home before the school bus brought their children home. Their children would have flipped out with jealousy if they knew that their parents went skiing without them. I wondered how they could possibly keep it a secret. I would think that their sunny smiling faces would give it away? I skied for more than two hours straight, yoyoing up and down the slope at least 12 times. My legs felt good but I didn’t need to overdo it. I went home happy and I am looking forward to great long season of winter fun. Don’t forget there is still time to get a good deal on a season’s pass! And sign up for an adult racing league. I’ll be racing Monday nights at Pats Peak. Have fun.
