Sara Godek Finds A Balance Between Work And Pursuing Her Dream by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Telemark skiing wasn’t Godek’s first love for her since she started skiing at a young age. “Skiing was instilled in me by my parents,” said Godek about those early days learning to ski at Gunstock. “They wanted me and my sister to be skiers. I tried Alpine skiing first but didn’t like

it much and eventually switched to Nordic,” but eventually she got burnt out on it. “I wasn’t enjoying it anymore,” said Godek. “Then my mom introduced me to Telemark Skiing in 2004.” In Telemark Skiing, which is also known as See godek on 22

Sara Ellen Godek from Gilford, has recently been approved by the United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA) Board of Directors to compete in the World Cup at Steamboat Spring, Colorado on February 10-14th, 2014.

For Godek, who works now in Tennessee for a clinical research company, this is another step in her line of goals with Telemark skiing which includes being a top ten finisher in the World Cup Championships and helping to get Telemark skiing into the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Why do Oakland Raiders fans have such a bad reputation? Cowboy fan Carlos Olivares was leaving the stadium yelling “Go Cowboys!” His next memory was waking up in a hospital bed, unable to open his eyes. “I woke up in shock,” Olivares said. “I got up real fast ‘cause I didn’t know where I was. Nurses held me down.” Witnesses told police that several men wearing Raiders attire attacked Olivares . Friends found him lying on the ground, unconscious. His cell phone was gone, as was the cash from his wallet. Despite the beating and memory loss, doctors told him he was lucky.

“The Raiders!” my students responded in unison. What is it about the Raiders? Every team has its own culture, and Raider culture is renegade culture. Oakland has long been known to give second chances to purported bad hombres— which is nice, if you’re a bad hombre. Having spent considerable time in San Diego, I picked up on the cultural differences between Charger fans (chilled) and Raider fans (swilled). San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium always sold out for the annual Raiders game, with many thousands of Raider fans donning their black and silver garb, putting on their eye-patches, grabbing their chains, and heading for the stadium. This is not to say that all Raider fans are outlaws. It’s just that bad 90% that give the good 10% a bad name. Consider the recent Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas, where the Cowboys hosted the Raiders. Dallas’ Channel 11 reported how after the Dallas victory,

Four Corners

s

Raider Ruffians & Football Fanatics Aaron Hernandez’s name came up during a recent Sports Law class. The former New England Patriots tight end was incarcerated earlier this year and charged with murder. It will take a while for his case to go to trial, as the wheels of justice move slowly in America. But eventually he’ll be convicted and sentenced. Or will he? What if Hernandez is found “not guilty?” Stranger things have happened. (Can you say “OJ?”) Would he return to the Patriots? Highly unlikely. So I asked my students, if not the Patriots, then what team would be most apt to sign Hernandez? “The Raiders!” they responded in unison. I laughed. An earlier discussion had centered on what will happen to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, now that he has been supplanted by Nick Foles. Vick is a convicted felon who did serious prison time for his involvement with dog fighting. If the Eagles release Vick, what team would be most likely to take a chance on him?

Medicaid Expansion To The Editor: I would like to commend Senator Jeanie Forrester for standing up to the political attacks in the recent Medicaid debate in the New Hampshire Senate. Governor Hassan’s plan to throw another fifty thousand New Hampshire workers into the Medicaid system without knowing when or if the federal government would leave taxpayers on the hook was irresponsible. Remember “if you like your plan, you can keep it.” Three years ago a Republican Legislature passed Managed Care for Medicaid recipients, a program that would improve the health care for 150,000 New Hampshire citizens. That program still hasn’t been fully implemented. Now Governor Hassan wants to put an additional 50,000 people into the system, totally irresponsible. The Republican Senate countered with a responsible compromise that would have helped low-income workers purchase private insurance, and protected New Hampshire taxpayers if Uncle Sam backed out of the deal. Even as Obama Care is throwing millions of Americans off their preferred insurance plans, limiting choices as to which hospitals can provide services and increasing deductibles, Governor Hassan and Democrats are trying to get more and more people into government run health care. That’s not going to do anything to make it more affordable, or improve the

Our Story

quality of care. The Republican alternative leverages federal assistance to help people buy their own insurance and choose their own doctors. Further, it doesn’t create a never-ending entitlement we can’t afford. Paul Simard Bristol, NH.

Obama Appeasement Weakens U.S. To The Editor: Obama and Kerry continue to promote an agenda of U.S. appeasement. Kerry has played a leading role in formulating and implementing an agreement with Iran to temporarily put a limit on Iran’s uranium enrichment program for six months. Iran can continue enriching uranium to 5%. In return Iran gets access to $7 billion in frozen funds, and more importantly, is able to get partial relief from the crippling burden of the economic sanctions. Although inspectors will be monitoring the temporary agreement, Iran will probably continue a higher grade uranium enrichment program in secret facilities. As the end of the agreement approaches it can stall and hinder negotiations and ask for the continuation of six month temporary agreements until it has the nuclear weapons. Iran cannot be trusted. While Kerry is appeasing the Iranians, Obama is busy appeasing China’s power play in the East

China Sea. China has declared an air defense zone and wants aircraft to notify China if aircraft enter the international air space. Japan has refused to comply with the demand, but the Obama administration has asked U.S. commercial airlines to make the notifications. The Obama administration continues to weaken our stature in the world through unbridled appeasement. Donald A. Moskowitz Londonderry, NH.

Getting Close To The Editor: Look no further than polling out this week from Rasmussen Reports that says 58% of likely voters oppose “ObamaCare’s requirement that every American must have health insurance.” Yet our representatives are fighting with every means available to change the story about ObamaCare. It would be so much easier if they stopped fighting the tide and repealed the law. The law does not work. It’s roll out is a mess. Its implementors are violating the constitution in the actions they have taken to provide patronage to their suporters and favors (exemptions, changed implementation dates, delays, non-enforcement of disagreeable provisions) for those willing to be quiet while this starts. It is a huge tax increase. See mail boat on 20

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Next Year?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Even though I didn’t win, I was truly humbled to be one of the finalists for Time Magazine’s Person of The Year. I have no hard feelings for Pope Francis, he certainly seems to deserve it and he seems like a good enough guy. I would imagine that many of you had no idea that I was even in the running. My name was pushed aside in the media by more prominent names like Miley Cyrus and Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran (who I understand have become Facebook friends since the nominees were announced). When Time Magazine called me to tell me I was on the list (well it was actually someone from Time Magazine who called since magazines themselves can’t talk) I can’t say I was totally surprised. After all, it has been almost two decades now since I began my campaign to have Flatlanders across northern New England recognized for who we are and the struggles we have faced over the years to fit into a land where we were, for the most part, unwelcome. I knew in my gut that this might be my year to finally be recognized, or maybe it was just that pepper, onion and refried bean burrito I had for lunch. I have been told that I didn’t finish that far back in the voting. I was just a few thousand votes behind Basahr Assad (whoever that is) but that didn’t dis-

courage me. Someone also pointed out to me that I would have been even further up on the list if it was still called “The Man of The Year like it was years ago, knocking people like Kathleen Sebelius out of the picture. Now that I have made the list once, I knew that by keeping up my hard work, I can now become a more prominent figure on the national stage and be able to further the cause of Flatlanders everywhere even more. It wasn’t easy when I first moved to Central New Hampshire from New York in 1985. I, like most other transplants, was lured in by the supposed easy lifestyle; the laidback day to day of northern New England that we thought we knew after so many years of watching the Newhart show on TV but soon found, after moving here, that all wasn’t as it seemed. It was harder work than we imagined, on both a physical level and an emotional one as we dealt with lots of discrimination. Sure, I wasn’t the first Flatlander in New Hampshire, there had been many before me that were living lives of quiet desperation trying to fit in without rocking the boat; many who chose to just go along but being held back by the man, especially the ones at the hardware store and the dump. It took me a few years after I moved here to realize that this was to be my calling, my mission, my something to do to keep from going crazy in the winter. It started with the group FATSO (Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion) the very first winter support group for Flatlanders like myself. Membership soon flourished and it wasn’t long until the Flatlander Party was born

and now we were starting to have our voices heard in Concord as well, sometimes even at the State House. I became the perennial candidate for Governor and, even though I lost every election since 2000, our base grows stronger each time. This year I plan to break the 100 vote barrier and then there may be no stopping the voice of the Flatlander. Is it any coincidence that the Flatlander population in New Hampshire has dramatically increased since I began my mission? Some natives, afraid of the power I have begun to amass, may try to spin it another way, to discredit me and the Flatlander movement as insignificant when they know, deep down, it is here to stay and getting stronger. The year 2013 was a turning point. The publication of my book “The Flatlander Chronicles has brought me a wider public understanding of our struggle. My name and my mission are now known far and wide, I personally know two people in Manchester who will vouch for that. So, it came as no surprise to me that I made the list for Person of The Year. It wasn’t overnight success, as some unfamiliar might have imagined, but years of hard work and dedication to a cause that means so much to myself and the legions of Flatlanders who have shaken loose from the cobwebs of their fears and have learned to proudly embrace them instead. 2014 is already gearing up to be a pivotal year. It could just be the year of The Flatlander. This time next year it may just be my face that graces the cover of Time Magazine. Or not.

From The State House

The Crony Obama Donors in Charge of DHS Candidness, Conscience, and Common Sense

There have been some very powerful discussions taking place here in NH lately. Folks are starting to notice the NH way of life seems to by Rep. Jane Cormier be dissipatBelknap District 8 ing before our very eyes. As I travel around New Hampshire speaking on the topics of Granite State F u ture, Common Core, or Constitutional Principles, the dialogue always seems to be the same. People are nervous and overwhelmed. There is just so much to worry about, it seems. Whether you are talking about families losing healthcare plans, paying higher healthcare premiums, or try-

ing to find access to affordable healthcare, this issue is undoubtedly a challenging topic. People are noticing our federal government is omnipresent all the time. Whether it is through HUD-enforced Workforce Housing laws, new EPA rules which could give the feds authority over virtually any stream or ditch, or Regional Planning Commissions (Granite State Future) which are nothing but non-legislated, federally-funded mandates to generate Sustainable Communities in NH, the concerns are the same. Natural rights are slowly being eroded with overreaching agency rules (NOT LEGISLATED LAWS) from our federal government. Our Founding Fathers would be appalled to see how states have allowed (even invited) the federal government to usurp state See cormier on 20

Dirty Harry Reid sabotaged the filibuster, and now the Democrats are running wild in Washington. Mark my words: We by Michelle Malkin all will pay a Syndicated Columnist price. Thanks to Reid’s crony-coddling rule change, unqualified stooges will manage the Obama Department of Homeland Security. It’s a bundler’s world, and we’re just living in it. God help us. On Monday night, Senate Democrats voted 57-37 to end debate on the nomination of Jeh Johnson to head DHS. That’s three votes short of the traditional 60-vote filibuster threshold that Reid nuked last month. Johnson went on to win his appointment by a 78-16 margin. The White House performed its Snoopy happy dance soon after, with President Obama declaring Johnson “a strong leader with a deep understanding of the threats we face and a proven ability to work across agencies and complex organizations to keep America secure.” DHS employs 240,000 people and boasts a $40 billion budget. Johnson, unlike his most recent predecessors, has never actually held an executive position governing a state or managing a complex organization. Let me summarize his relevant experience in border security, port security, airport security or immigration enforcement: Zero. Zip. Nada. News coverage instead stresses that Johnson is the “first AfricanAmerican” to hold the No. 1 position at DHS. Because, you know,

diversity will keep us safe. Here’s more you should know about Johnson: He’s a lifelong beneficiary of the government/law firm revolving door, dating back to the Clinton years. In a recent interview with a legal website, Johnson cheerfully bragged that his initial “foray into national security was a fluke, really. The Clinton White House recruited me to be general counsel of the Air Force. I had no idea what the job was about, had never been in the military and had never set foot in the Pentagon.” Yep, a “fluke.” That’s a public confidence booster, huh? Johnson counts among the “big breaks” in his life a fateful meeting with Obama in 2006. He went on to shovel gobs of money into Obama’s campaigns and Democratic coffers. In 2008, this top campaign finance bundler served on the Team Obama transition team. Next, Johnson found himself -- like the feather floating in “Forrest Gump” -- appointed to the position of general counsel at the Defense Department. He was “involved” in ending the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and reportedly “oversaw” the use of unmanned drone strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan. White House aides claim that Johnson is a “respected national security leader.” But respected by whom (other than Democratic fundraisers) the administration will not say. Perhaps we might comfort ourselves if the No. 2 in charge at DHS had strong qualifications and a record on national security to compensate for Johnson’s deficiencies. Sorry. As I reported last week, Dirty Harry Reid exploited the nuked filibuster threshold to ram through Alejandro Mayorkas’ nomination as deputy DHS sec-

UN Confronts Perfect Storm of Humanitarian Disasters UNITED NATIONS—Faced with the ongoing civil war in Syria, the natural disaster in the Philippines, and a spreading civil conflict by John J. Metzler in the Central Syndicated Columnist African Republic, the UN humanitarian agencies are confronting a near perfect storm of political and natural disasters. Add the continuing needs from earlier trouble spots such as South Sudan, Somalia and Haiti, and it appears that the system and donor states are facing near overload. The UN Humanitarian coordinator Valerie Amos has launched the largest ever appeal for $13 billion in funding to reach 52 million people in 17 countries with essential lifesaving aid. According to Ms. Amos, $6.5 billion is slated for operations in Syria and neighboring countries. This becomes the largest appeal ever for a single crisis. According to the UN umbrella coordination unit the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there are plans for additional help to millions of Filipinos in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, and aid for the Central African Republic “where conflict and displacement have affected the entire population of 4.7 million people.” Equally there are significant and ongoing programs in Afghanistan, Sudan, Yemen and Haiti. Syria remains the eye of the storm. After nearly three years of conflict and over 100,000 killed, there are 2.3 million refugees spread round the region and an additional 6 million displaced internally inside the country. Given that Syria’s pre-conflict population was 21 million, this is a dangerously large percentage, basically one in three people inside the country is uprooted from their homes. The largest refugee outflow has poured into neighboring Lebanon. There are approximately 830,000 Syrians in Lebanon and with the onset of winter the challenges have increased for the vulnerable communities, especially the children. The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) noted that unlike other neighboring states, Lebanon does not have formal

refugee camps; rather the refugees are dispersed to 1,600 different locations. Given that Lebanon’s pre-conflict population was 4.3 million, this refugee influx poses a massive burden on a small country which remains divided along fragile Christian/ Muslim ethnic lines. Naturally the Humanitarian Response plans for 2014 need specific aid from donor countries. The European Commission has slated $200 million for various UN agencies to assist in the Syrian crisis. President Jose Manuel Barroso stated, “The conflict in Syria has consumed tens of thousands of lives, uprooted millions from their homes, destabilized the region and consigned an entire generation of the young to an uncertain future.” He added, “It is right we stand up for the victims of this catastrophe.” Since the start of the crisis the European Union has been the largest humanitarian donor to Syria with approximately $3 billion given. Beyond government donors, in fact the majority of aid given comes via private charities such as Catholic Relief Services, CARE, Americares, and Catholic Near East Assistance among so many others such as the French Doctors Without Borders. Americans can proudly be described as a nation of givers; large sums are donated to private charities and much of this help goes to places like the Philippines, Haiti and the Middle East. Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines, killing at least 6,000 but causing a swath of destruction affecting millions. OCHA is focused on helping three million people with aid projects slated at $791 million. Here too massive assistance from the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan among others has tried to bring some semblance of normalcy in central Leyte and the surrounding islands. The UN’s humanitarian relief is doing an exemplary job of providing emergency aid. Yet in cases like Syria and Afghanistan, the humanitarian community is treating the symptoms of far deeper political problems. Also, in the Philippines or Haiti, the relief community is responding to the wrath of nature be it a typhoon or an earthquake. While civil wars, political turbulence and natural disasters have sadly become commonplace, a looming danger remains that donor

fatigue, namely being overwhelmed and unable to process individual tragedy, allows the world to tune out the most recent crisis. Sadly we may be nearing that point.

A Very Dangerous Game New York City police authorities are investigating a series of unprovoked physical attacks in public places on people who are Jewish, in the form of by Thomas Sowell what is called Syndicated Columnist “the knockout game.” The way the game is played, one of a number of young blacks decides to show that he can knock down some stranger on the streets, preferably with one punch, as they pass by. Often some other member of the group records the event, so that a video of that “achievement” is put on the Internet, to be celebrated. The New York authorities describe a recent series of such attacks and, because Jews have been singled out in these attacks, are considering prosecuting these assaults as “hate crimes.” Many aspects of these crimes are extremely painful to think about, including the fact that re-

sponsible authorities in New York seem to have been caught by surprise, even though this “knockout game” has been played for years by young black gangs in other cities and other states, against people besides Jews -- the victims being either whites in general or people of Asian ancestry. Attacks of this sort have been rampant in St. Louis. But they have also occurred in Massachusetts, Wisconsin and elsewhere. In Illinois the game has often been called “Polar Bear Hunting” by the young thugs, presumably because the targets are white. The main reason for many people’s surprise is that the mainstream media have usually suppressed news about the “knockout game” or about other and larger forms of similar orchestrated racial violence in dozens of cities in every region of the country. Sometimes the attacks are reported, but only as isolated attacks by unspecified “teens” or “young people” against unspecified victims, without any reference to the racial makeup of the attackers or the victims -- and See Sowell on 26

All donations for the evening will go to the Cardiac Transplant Unit at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. aorta. A few days later, the hospital installed a pacemaker to adjust the actual heartbeat. The next six-and-ahalf years went by pretty smoothly until the left side of John’s heart got so weak it pretty much collapsed. This was in December of 2009. John went to Catholic Medical Center again where they shipped him by ambulance to Tuft’s Medical Center in Boston. They installed a heart pump to the left side of his heart which was run by batteries and a computer, all on a vest which he wore 24/7. The same type of pump, the “Heart Mate,” is being used by former VicePresident, Dick Cheney.

At this point, John got on the list for a transplant. On January 3, 2011, John got the phone call about his transplant at 7pm. He got in his car, with his wife Brenda, to drive down to Tufts, calling the family on the way to tell them the news. The transplant was a success and today John says he feels better and better. The donations John collects as celebrity bartender at The Lobster Pound will all go to the Cardiac Transplant Division at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. John would like to say “Thank You” to all his friends, family, doctors and nurses who have supported and helped him over the past ten

years and he invites all to this joyous occasion in helping celebrate the third year of his new life. Any and all types of donations would be greatly appreciated, and would be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Cardiac Division of Tufts Medical Center. John Ganong will personally pick up any donations. Last year this same event raised $1,850.00 for the Cardiac Division in just 2.5 hours. Please call (603) 393-5590 to donate; as this is truly a gift that keeps giving.

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

2014 is just around the corner. Of course with the new year comes resolutions. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan. Most of us fail at them, pretty spectacularly. We’ve all been there. We set up the resolution. We plan and envision it. Yet, by January 3rd or so it has collapsed around us. I believe this happens because when we think of our resolutions, we think of huge goals that tend to be abstract (like “lose weight”) and when you do that you don’t have checkpoints along the

way or any small goals so in turn your just have this great big huge task and it really becomes an impossibility. So if our resolutions are just doomed to fail, why do we make a resolution every New Years? I think the obvious answer is that most of us have stuff in our lives that we don’t like about ourselves or that we think could be improved upon. Something that we know we could do better to improve our quality of life and increase how much we enjoy our life. Yet, it doesn’t seem to work out as we had hoped. In fact, this becomes such a discouraging process that many people don’t even make resolutions anymore. I can totally understand why a person might feel that way but to give up on trying to improve ourselves, doesn’t seem to be the answer either. I propose that you need a game

plan. What I would call a resolution solution. Basically, make a list of small changes for your life and from that list choose four items. Each quarter of the year you’re going to add one of these items into your lifestyle. So they should be simple things that you can do easily and readily. This way changes won’t be overwhelming and what you’ll find is that over the course of the year the small changes will add up to big differences. So for example, you could say: I’m going to stop eating sugar, I’m going to cut out all white flour, and I’m going to exercise everyday. In January you would implement one of those changes. Changes like these are really really simple to do at home and they’re not expensive. No excuses! Simply, you would do one change for the first

Education or Indoctrination At Trinity? Many years ago US Senator Bob Smith R-NH stood on the Senate floor and gave a vivid picture of a by Niel Young Advocates Columnist partially born baby being murdered. Bob got my attention, and many, many, others. It is not a pretty site. Smith would later be criticized for such an act. This was a wakeup call for Pro-Lifers. Not sure “Scared Straight is still on TV but there was a way to curb young people from continuing a life of trouble functioning in society. Sometimes the only way to get through to these folks is shock them by unusual means. Not a mean word, say, teabagger which the Obama Zombies and mean Liberals use to purposely insult and hurt Christians, especially ladies. Well, how many real men and clean-living ladies are going to continue to look at the Tea Party as villains? Do Tea Party folks use this language? As a male Phil was talking to real men in biological terms, and in religious terms. By number of taxpayers, that means that the 1,366,000 taxpayers in the top 1% group paid more in federal income taxes in 2011 than the 123,000,000 taxpayers in the bottom 90%. B. The top 1/10 of 1% of US taxpayers (only 137,000 tax filers) paid a greater share of total federal income taxes paid in 2011 (16.14%) than the entire bottom 75% of taxpayers (102.4 million), who paid only 14.4% of all income taxes. ******** Jay Sekulow ACLJ Chief Counsel: The Obama Administration’s “deal with Iran allows the jihadist regime to continue its march towards nuclear weapons. After the Holocaust, America promised that never again would we stand aside and allow genocide. Then again, there is not a whole lot of that going on today. I often suggest that the government schools have become indoctrination centers. At this private school there has been a problem since June 2012. A husband, father of three children, and 16 year coach at Trinity, Greg Kenney was fired. That was orchestrated by a “gay athletic director who could not accept that Kenney’s contract said he would coach two, not three sports. According to the NY Post: Patricia Krieger allegedly forced him to coach three sports, even though his contract required him to join two teams. When he complained that the extra responsibilities interfered with his family obligations Krieger allegedly told him, “We all make choices, the suit says. Kenney claims the allegedly biased athletic director “routinely favored other single, younger females without children and discriminated against [him] because of his gender, sexual orientation, ‘traditional family status,’ and age. Attorney Steven Morelli: “He had been doing this for so many years and he certainly did the job well or they would have gotten rid of him a long time ago. See advocates on 26

DEAR TIM: I’m in a pickle and not liking it. I moved into an existing home only to discover a few months ago the shingles on my roof are defective. Fortunately, the previous homeowner saved all his product brochures and I know the brand and type of shingle. But I’ve run into resistance with the manufacturer in honoring the warranty. It seems the warranty was transferable to me, but I don’t know if that happened. How can you preserve warranties and what’s the best advice you can offer to homeowners in this situation? --Mary Ellen G., Trinity, Fla.

Here’s a brochure that’s nearly 15 years old. It could come in very handy when it’s time to make a warranty claim or transfer a product warranty. DEAR MARY ELLEN: Oh, my! I wonder if you have the same shingles as I have on my home. Believe it or not, I just discovered my long-life shingles are failing. After doing some research online, I discovered a classaction lawsuit is brewing against the manufacturer. You may be in the same situation as I am. Just last night at our dinner table, we were discussing product warranties. My son talked about the lifetime warranty on his computer and all its parts. I brought to his attention that the warranty was probably more of a marketing tool than a valuable asset to him. Why? My wife and I pointed out that it’s possible a vast majority of computer owners would upgrade to a new, faster computer long before their existing one wears out. If the manufacturer has data to support this, he’s offering something of great perceived value to the consumer that costs him very little. But in our cases, it’s very different. Shingles are meant to last a long time. Homeowners don’t normally switch to a new shingle just because a

new color or style hits the marketplace. We expect shingles to last as long as the warranty, assuming the shingles were installed per manufacturer’s instructions. There are any number of things you need to do to preserve product warranties. For starters, it’s very important to save all receipts that show you, or your contractor, purchased the product. This can be very challenging, especially if a subcontractor buys that fancy faucet in your home. In my case, the shingle manufacturer, IKO, is requiring me to submit the actual receipt showing the shingles were IKO, the exact type, the quantity and the date they were purchased. Imagine how difficult it is to get a receipt like this from the roofing subcontractor who built my home! I feel that requiring all these things is a way for the manufacturer to dodge honoring the warranty because it knows that only a tiny percentage of homeowners could produce such a receipt. When you purchase products, save the written warranty. Take the time to read it to see if See builder on 20

As the housing market bounces back in many parts of the country, you may be wondering: What’s my home worth now? There’s actually more than one answer, according to Scott Halliwell, a certified financial planner at USAA. He says your home has three, potentially very different price tags based on its: Market Value This is the amount homes in your area are bought and sold for. Determined in part by the going rate for similar houses

pletely destroyed because of, say, a fire or natural disaster, replacement cost is what it would take to remove debris and rebuild the structure from the ground up based on construction costs in your area. in your city and neighborhood, market value is not based on what you paid for the home or how much it cost you to finish out the basement, reroof or remodel the kitchen. Many intangibles factor into this figure. Replacement Value If your home is com-

it’s transferable to a new owner. Understand what you have to do to make the transfer happen. This little bit of work could really help you when a realtor lists your home and you can prove you have the ability to transfer any and all product warranties. Save the full-color product brochures that describe the products in your home. Years ago, I was able to force a utilitybody manufacturer to give me a new truck body for one that was rusting prematurely. The wording on the product brochure made it clear I was in the right and the manufacturer was wrong. It’s vital that the products are installed exactly as the manufacturer recommends. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, and it’s very hard for you to make sure this

happens. First, you and the installer need to understand how the product must be installed. Second, you need to inspect the work as it’s happening to ensure all is well. I understand this is next to impossible and can cause friction between you and the contractor. Egos can get in the way. Take many photos during the installation process if possible. You can’t have too many photos, including close-up ones. You may not know what you’re looking at, but an expert down the road will. Realize that not all companies have the same ethics as you may have. You may expect a company to honor a warranty claim, but the company sees your situation as a drain on profits. Lastly, I suggest you try to avoid warranty issues by doing great due diligence before you buy.

Take the time to investigate companies. Scour the Internet for horror stories. Study pricing and closely compare products. Realize price is often, but not always, a great barometer for quality. Products that cost more often are made with great materials and skill and rarely fail before their time. Want free home-improvement information? It requires you to buy a product you may or may not want. It requires you to buy in quantities you may or may not need. It requires you to buy it from the government anointed insurer. The government may or may not pass through your application to the insurer. Your doctor may or may not participate in the program. Your local hospital may or may not participate in the program. It requires all healthcare providers to provide digitized records of your conditions, treatments and your history to the government. The IRS will be the keeper of the records and don’t worry they wouldn’t think of using release of information about you to stifle your rights to free speech or to intimidate you or damage you financially... oh wait, they’ve been doing it already with politically active people. There are no data security problems with the government... oh wait, what about that Snowden fellow? You know the “low level outside contractor” who ran off with 1,700,000 files that the NSA will acknowledge are both sensitive, damaging and gone. Security surely isn’t a concern... The IRS is so much more up to the task than the NSA... All the supporters of the law can come up with is that the reason the government control hasn’t worked is because you haven’t given us enough control. Look at it from another perspective: What’s the difference between slavery and working for someone who then tells you what you must buy, when you must buy, how much you must buy, where you must buy, who you must buy from, what you must pay, then applies penalties if you don’t comply, who takes your money by force, and who gives you what they allow you to have? Getting a little close, don’t you think? It is time to repeal the Unaffordable Care Act. Marc Abear Meredith, NH.

sovereignty, disabling the checks and balances of our Constitution. So, what are our families to do? It is a challenging conundrum to be sure. But, the one thing we CANNOT afford to do is check out. We need some Yankee Ingenuity here. We need a can-do attitude based on Candidness, Conscience, and Common sense. We need to be candid about what we are facing. If we do not confront the complicated questions, we will never discover the corrective answers. We need conscience to keep us grounded in honesty and truth, and lastly, we need some singular common sense! When laws are written so voluminously and laboriously so as no one can really understand them (Obamacare, anyone?), they are not sound laws! Common sense tells us if you SPEND more than you TAKE IN, you will be in debt. This is no way to run the finances of a family or government! And common sense tells us, we should not expect to solve this chaos in one fell swoop. It took Progressives decades to get us here, and only hard work and high-mindedness will see us out. Step by step, inch by inch, if we stay together and on track, we will arrive at our destination of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, finding balance once more with our founding documents. Remember, Candidness, Conscience, and Common Sense. These three can lead us back to our beloved Constitution! “We are a nation that has a government-not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.” Ronald Reagan

Ice Skating Now Offered at The Wolfeboro Inn ... As part of its unofficial mission to “surprise and delight” local neighbors,

The Wolfeboro Inn recently completed construction of a 40’ by 80’ skating rink. The rink is located just behind the main entrance area of the Inn, and is open from 9 to 5 daily and is available- at no charge- to all who love ice skating. The skating rink project was the brain child of The Wolfeboro Inn’s executive team but the heavy lifting was done by Michael “Mikey” Porelle. Over a period of three days, Porelle laid out the space, built the frame and foundation and with a craftsman’s eye for detail, created an old-fashion skating rink. “We want people to come and enjoy the skating rink” commented the Inn’s General Manager, Darrin Frowery, shown here in middle of rink. “Opening the rink to the public is one of the ways we try to give back to dave colby Photo the community we call home.”

join the regional team. She went to the head of the USTSA and she was nominated to the B team. “To be a part of the team you also need to be an ambassador for the sport,” said Godek. “You need to show interest, passion and commitment.” With all of the snow we have had so far this season you would think that there are plenty of training opportunities for Godek. The only problem is that she is now living in Tennessee where “there isn’t a lot of snow.” “I have to be creative in my training,” said Godek who finds ways to crosstrain indoors to stay in shape. “I’m also going to be going to Japan for

two week in January for work.” Still, with challenges such as these in balancing full-time work and training, Godek has still reached amazing levels in Telemark skiing. It was just this past September that she was announced for the roster of the 2013-14 Telemark National and Development teams (along with two other New Hampshirites, Sarah Carley of Brentwood and Josh Lanzetta of Rye) and then, just last week got the news that she was approved by the USTSA Board of Directors to compete in the World Cup at Steamboat Springs, February 10-14th, 2014. An event that is especially significant because it is

usually held in Europe. Following that, she will be competing in the U.S. Nationals which will be held at Pico Ski Resort in Killington, Vermont. Godek’s goal of helping establish, and then competing in Telemark Skiing in the 2018 Winter Olympics is made more intriguing by the fact that she is twenty-five years old and she would be of prime age for a Telemark skier by the time those Olympics rolled around. In the summer Godek keeps busy by hiking. She has hiked 800-miles of the Appalachian Trail and is working on completing all 4000-footers in New England. Of course, all of the training and travelling comes at a cost and Godek welcomes personal sponsors in helping her fulfill her goals. Sponsors can be individual, shops or corporations. Money is always helpful but equipment with logos can also be utilized. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Sara at saraegodek@gmail.com.

with no mention of racial epithets by the young hoodlums exulting in their own “achievement.” Despite such pious phrases as “troubled youths,” the attackers are often in a merry, festive mood. In a sustained mass attack in Milwaukee, going far beyond the dimensions of a passing “knockout game,” the attackers were laughing and eating chips, as if it were a picnic. One of them observed casually, “white girl bleed a lot.” That phrase -- “White Girl Bleed A Lot” -- is also the title of a book by Colin Flaherty, which documents both the racial attacks across the nation and the media attempts to cover them up, as well as the local political and police officials who try to say that race had nothing to do with these attacks.

Chapter 2 of the 2013 edition is titled, “The Knockout Game, St. Louis Style.” So this is nothing new, however new it may be to some in New York, thanks to the media’s political correctness. Nor is this game just a passing prank. People have been beaten unconscious, both in this game and in the wider orchestrated racial attacks. Some of these victims have been permanently disabled and some have died from their injuries. But most of the media see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. In such an atmosphere, the evil not only persists but grows. Some in the media, as well as in politics, may think that they are trying to avoid provoking a race war by ignoring or playing down these attacks. But the way to prevent a race

war is by stopping these attacks, not trying to sanitize them. If these attacks continue, and continue to grow, more and more people are going to know about them, regardless of the media or the politicians. Responsible people of all races need to support a crackdown on these attacks, which can provoke a white backlash that can escalate into a race war. But political expediency leads in the opposite direction. What is politically expedient is to do what Attorney General Eric Holder is doing -- launch campaigns against schools that discipline a “disproportionate” number of black male students. New York City’s newly elected liberal mayor is expected to put a stop to police “stop and frisk” policies that have reduced the murder rate to one-fourth

of what it was under liberal mayors of the past. Apparently political correctness trumps human lives. Providing cover for hoodlums is a disservice to everybody, including members of every race, and even the hoodlums themselves. Better that they should be suppressed and punished now, rather than continue on a path that is likely to lead to prison, or even to the execution chamber. retary. Mayorkas remains under investigation for a partisan cash-for-foreigninvestor-visas scandal by the DHS inspector general’s office, which itself remains under investigation for fraud and ethics violations that endanger national security. His appointment is expected to sail through the full Senate on Wednesday. At DHS, adjudicators remain under pressure to rubber-stamp visa applications. Open-borders ideologues continue to push for administrative amnesty programs behind closed doors and in circumvention of congressional oversight. Three years after the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, his colleagues are under siege inside and outside their agency. And whistleblowers are an endangered species. The elevation of Obama’s stooge donors to the two highest civilian homeland security posts in the country comes as both vote-seeking Democrats and big-business Republicans prepare for another

illegal alien amnesty push next year. As Dan Stein of the immigration enforcement group FAIR noted this week: “There is no mistaking the signals the president has sent to the American people. ... President Obama has called on the House to pass ‘comprehensive’ immigration reform, yet nominated an individual to head DHS who has zero immigration experience. Thus, it is clear the president wants the amnesty portion of such a bill, but has little or no intention of prioritizing any enforcement measures that might be contained in it.” The inmates are running the asylum. Homeland security threats and ciphers are running the homeland security department. God help us all. three months of the year (for the first quarter ), at the beginning of the next quarter, you would add in the next change. So instead of making wholesale changes all at once you’re slowly adding these changes and the changes are having a compound effect, in terms of benefits. You’re stacking small easy tasks to reach bigger goals. By the end of the year you wouldn’t need to make a resolution because you’d already be much healthier than you had been the previous year. I really like the idea of this because when we try to complete our resolutions we do wholesale lifestyle changes they’re just impossible to maintain. So here’s my proposed list of possible small changes that you can make quarterly throughout the year: 1) drink more water. Almost all of us, tend to be dehydrated. Drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? All of these actually dehydrate you more! You should shoot for half your body-

weight in ounces of water per day. 2) cut out sugar. It decreases your immune system and damages your insulin response. It also makes you gain weight and provides empty calories, there’s no point to it. 3) white flour...cut it out. See sugar. 4) exercise every single day. I think that should be a given. 5) start seeing a chiropractor. Most people have some kind of spinal or structural abnormalities if they have never seen a chiropractor, our spines like all else in out body requires maintenance. Those types of problems don’t let your body function efficiently. Most folks I know, think they feel okay but will say things like: “l’m just having my normal headache/low back pain/etc”, no pain symptoms are normal! 6) the goals can also move beyond the physical such as finances, mental peace, spiritual health, or whatever you can think of.

I want to challenge you to sit down today and write a list of as many solutions as possible. Sleep on it. Now choose the four you will focus on. Don’t overcomplicate this. Pick them and put the dates on your calendar, upon which you will add them to your life. You will fail, you will trip.... don’t quit. Fulfill this plan and have, perhaps, your healthiest year ever. Then next year you won’t have to make resolutions, you’ll be too busy enjoying results. Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC., graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2007. Salome’s Stars Horoscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be busier than you had expected right now. But between the socializing rounds and the workplace tasks, there are opportunities for special moments with that certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creative approach leads to a quickerthan-expected solution to a workplace problem. Now you can devote more time to that proposal you hope to introduce by midmonth. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Technological glitches create problems early on. But by midweek, all runs smoothly once again, and you’re well and truly on your way to meeting all your deadlines. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your energy levels are high, and you feel you can handle everything that comes along. But try to take a break from your hectic pace for some quiet time with someone close to you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Before you pounce on that shiny new opportunity,

MOFFETT from 3

“I’m just glad I was left alive,” Olivares said. Laid-back San Diegans are familiar with such behavior. So with pro football being a business, the Charger management decided to screw the Raider fans. San Diego was struggling and was not selling out Qualcomm—except for the Raider game, when black-shirted fans bought every available ticket. So the Chargers decreed that anyone who wanted a single ticket to the Raider game had to buy a threegame package. Raider fans only wanted to see the one game, but were incensed at having to pay for three. This did not improve their moods as they tailgated in Qualcomm’s giant parking lot, drinking hard stuff and

Other Sports Cultures Referring to Raider fans as hooligans overstates the renegade aspect of Raider culture. Hooligans are British soccer followers who are actually criminals who use sport as an excuse for mayhem. But sports fans in certain American cities do take on tribal characteristics. The aforementioned San Diego fans are famously laid-back, whereas Boston Red Sox fans were famously fatalistic—at least until 2004. New York fans are famously obnoxious. Philadelphia fans are famously cruel—known to boo everyone from Santa Claus to Miss Pennsylvania. Cleveland fans are famously morose. Sport sociologists studied these tribal traits and identified the three most volatile fan segments. Foxsports.com described an Emory University study that confirmed what many have long purported: Football fans—especially those rooting for New England, Pittsburgh, or Oakland— can be unstable. Pats fans unstable? Say it isn’t so! Marketing professors Michael Lewis and Manish Tripathi devised an algorithm and analyzed data to figure out how various fan bases deal with losses— and they found that fans

of the Raiders, Steelers and Patriots do not cope well. Patriot fans ranked high in terms of instability because they are the saddest fans after a loss, as measured by angry Twitter Tweets. It probably has a lot to do with expectations. Pats fans expect to win. According to Lewis and Tripathi, the most stable fans are Cowboy fans. Over the last 15 years Cowboy fans have been conditioned to expect disappointment, so when Tony Romo fails them they are not surprised. So what does all this mean? It means that the Raider Ruffians should be careful about showing up in black and silver the next time Oakland plays at New England. Gillette Stadium is not Qualcomm. Regardless of the outcome, if they’re looking for trouble, they’ll find it—and will likely end up paraphrasing Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. “We’re not in California anymore!” Sports Quiz Who is the only NBA coach to win “Coach-of-theYear” honors with a losing record? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports standouts born on Dec. 26 include Hall of Fame catcher and former Granite Stater Carlton Fisk (1947) and onetime Yankee 1st baseman Chris Chambliss (1948). Sportsquote “When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important than the name on the back.” – from the ice hockey movie “Miracle” Sportsquiz Answer John Kerr of the expansion Chicago Bulls was NBA Coach-of-the-Year in 1967. Comedy Show Takes A Hilarious Peek Inside The Male Mind

PORTSMOUTH - How can women know exactly how men think? Will women ever truly understand male thoughts? Is it possible for women to think from a male point of view? Be careful what you wish for as the all-male comedy show “How Men Think (or Do They?)” is a hilarious peek inside the male mind. The comedy tour returns to Portsmouth, NH at the Portsmouth Gas Light Co on Saturday, January 11th The lineup for the show features Alan Park, a Canadian comedian and political satirist best known for his appearances on the Royal Canadian Air Farce. Chris Pennie will also be a part of this month’s show, who has been entertaining crowds since 2005. As a life-long bachelor and full-time single dad Chris relies on his dysfunctional family and off beat view of the world to find humor in everyday life. This install-

ment of the tour will also feature Brian Ronan, New Hampshire native Paul Landwehr, and returning comedian, Dave Rattigan. “All of these guys are excellent comedians who cull material from their own lives,” said Rattigan. “They all work at comedy clubs, but when we’re together with this theme, and this expectation from the audience, it creates a very different vibe than what you get in a comedy club. At certain points you’ll see women laughing as their husbands nod their heads in recognition. After the show, I’ll often have women come up to me in the lobby and tell me about something one of us said that mirrors behavior they’ve observed in the past from a boyfriend, husband, father or some other lug head in their lives.” The show, which debuted in 2009, features a revolving lineup of male standup comedians who share dif-

ferent (but very male) observations on the world around them. Over the course of 95 minutes, they share their points of view on wives, mothers, friends, kids, careers, neighbors, growing older, love, lust, Internet dating and other things you won’t believe they’ve wasted time thinking about. “It’s a really fun night,” said co-creator Lisa Knight from Drinkwater Productions, LLC whose company produces the show. “Women really appreciate hearing these things coming from guys who have no ulterior motives and are just honestly trying to make them laugh.” The Portsmouth Gas Light Co located at 64 Market St Portsmouth, NH. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door. The show will start at 7:00 pm. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.drinkwaterproductionsevents.com.
