A History Of Navigating On Lake Winnipesaukee

Contributing Writer

Lake Winnipesaukee has been the inspiration for many stories over the years that have caught my interest. One story that has escaped me is the evolution of the system of markers that guides boaters into safe waters and away from the numerous shallows and rock infested areas of the lake. The Big Lake has been described as one of, if not the most, hazard filled, treacherous lakes in the U.S. to navigate. That point is substantiated by the 777 navigational markers currently on the lake. In 1833 the steamer Belknap was launched in Lakeport and made runs to Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton Bay and the Weirs. The Belknap was

One of the earliest navigational maps (1911) of Lake Winnipesaukee with over 200 buoys. Today there are 777 navigational markers.

96 feet long and 33 feet wide. It made its rounds without any buoys to mark hazards on the way. There were many other steamboats hauling passengers and freight on Winnipesaukee before the New Hampshire legislature approved $250 on April 11, 1891 to provide lighting in the Weirs Channel and maintaining buoys on Lake Winnipesaukee. New Hampshire was the first state in the United States to mark inland lakes for navigation. Early navigation lights were oil lamps and would hold a three day supply of oil. One of the lamp tenders later on was “Spinach” Greene, whose first name was George. He picked up the name “Spinach” partly See navigate on BOAT 5

because of his full beard and partly because he sold vegetables to summer residents of the islands. Even though Spinach worked on the lake, he did not know how to swim and refused to wear a life jacket. The life jackets of that time where bulky cork or kapok filled and hindered his movement. As a very poor second attempt at safety he dragged a long

rope in back of his boat. This was intended as something he could grab hold of in case he fell in. Imagine falling overboard near Bear Island with the boat headed towards Parker Island and beyond. Hopefully, he had a snorkel tied to the rope as well. (As a side note on falling overboard, many bodies of men that were found in the lake had their fly open‌apparently having fallen

overboard while relieving themselves standing precariously on the gunwale or deck.) As time moved on acetylene lamps came into use on the light buoys. The first one being placed by Little Mark Island at the mouth of Alton Bay. The light was reported to be seen from five miles away. K ayak F ishing Opportunities

by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

With the popularity of kayak fishing increasing at a rapid pace, kayak anglers are looking for new and different fishing op-

portunities. In many ways, I consider New Hampshire as a sleeper state in terms of fishing opportunities. From our modest 18 miles of coast line, to Lake Winnipesaukee and

the Connecticut River, New Hampshire is loaded with possibilities that many kayak anglers never knew about. The number of places with great fishing are too numerous to list,

Outdoor and fishing expert Tim Moore. but here are a few of my favorites. Seacoast Growing up in the seacoast NH area, I cut my teeth catching flounder and striped bass. When I began kayak fishing it was natural for me to begin at the beginning. Winter flounder are delicious and can be found in most shallow harbors and estuaries with a sand or mud bottom. Kayaks are probably the most effective way of catching flounder in the quiet waters of the harbors. The ability to drift in and around tightly packed mooring fields offers kayak anglers the ability to reach fish that are normally safe from larger boats and shore anglers. Striped bass, while delicious to eat, are extremely fun to catch in a kayak. My kayak fishing clients travel from all over the country each summer to experience large numbers of schoolies (fish under 28”) or that one or two larger fish in the 30” range. All it usually takes is connecting with one 30” fish

and the striper isn’t the only one hooked. There is little that beats the Nantucket sleigh ride that a big striper provides. Lakes Region Lake Winnipesaukee is arguably New Hampshire’s most well-known lake and its reputation for landlocked salmon, lake trout, and jumbo white perch precedes it. However, there are other fantastic lakes around Winnipesaukee that offer some amazing kayak fishing opportunities, such as Little and Big Squam Lakes. Big Squam has one of the best smallmouth bass fisheries in New England, as well as trophy landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, and jumbo white perch. When you add the breathtaking beauty of Squam Lake to the world class fishing you have the ingredients that have sparked many a love affair between kayak angler and lake. THE WEIRS TIMES GUIDE TO THE 2018 GREAT NORTHEAST BOAT SHOW those days to be able to find acceptable routes and then commit them to memory. The first buoys were made from hemlock and were either 8’ or 16’ long and where held in place by a single cement block chained to the bottom of the buoy. The short ones were used in shallow water and the long ones used in deep water. Although they were painted, after a couple years the wood became water logged and the buoys would start to sink. The old buoy would be replaced with a new one and stored in a rack to dry out for a year, then scraped and painted and put back in service. There were other challenges as well with the wooden buoys. Replacing them was the task of the Marine Patrol officers, who would occasionally end up with back prob-

lems as a result of handling the cumbersome long pieces of wood. The Weirs Channel was marked with pilings that were similar in size to telephone poles and were pounded into the lake bottom by a pile driver on a barge. As the ice would start to move during the spring thaw, some of the pilings would be pushed over or sometimes taken out completely and need to be replaced. The movement of the spring ice would also relocate some of the buoys that were still tightly frozen in the ice. As time went on and snow machines started to use the frozen lake, severe accidents could occur when a snow mobile would hit a wooden buoy that was partially obscured by snow drifts. It was not unusual for both the rider and the See navigate on BOAT 16

teries wired in series that would last four to five weeks. The patrol boat officers would carry lots of these batteries as each light buoy took 12 batteries. Solar batteries were introduced in the 1990’s and last five years. Another lighting advancement allows the red and green lights in the Weirs Channel to communicate with each other and all flash at the same time. Neat ! The earliest navigation chart of Winnipesauke that I’ve been able to locate is dated 1911 and has a little over 200 buoys on it. The series of buoys that mark the Graveyard is not on this chart. Think of attempting to get around on

Winnipesaukee today with only 200 buoys instead of the actual 777 buoys. You would need a few replacement propellers if you didn’t know the lake like the early steamboat captains did. Copies of the 1911 Lake Winnipesaukee chart are available at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum located next to Funspot. An earlier map just showing the Lake and some of the islands is dated December 24, 1781. The unusual aspect of this map is that south is at the top of the page. In researching this story I discovered a map of Lake Winnipesaukee dated 1858. The map measures 65 inches by 42 inches and shows

various steamboat routes but no buoy system. The entire map is done with amazing accuracy. It is labeled “Lake Winnipisseogee, Long Bay and Smith’s Pond.” Wm.P. Crocker, Civil Engineer is credited on the map. In 1986 the map was appraised at between $1500 and $2000. The map can be viewed at the New Hampshire State Archives under record MD3, F7. So, what did the early boat captains use to guide them around the lake? They steered by referencing various land masses and the silhouettes of those points as well as the islands as reference points. load as quickly as possible to make room for the next person. There will be plenty of time for reminiscing and photo sharing after you are loaded and out of the way. Then everyone gets to enjoy these places as much as you did. The buoys had internal flotation, required no maintenance and would break fairly easily if hit by a boat or snow mobile causing much less damage. Springtime ice movement was not an issue

gered), Eastern box turtles (NH endangered) and wood turtle (NH special concern). To assist with survey efforts, small transmitters were attached to 30 Blanding’s turtles to aid in identifying their precise locations. Locations of turtles were identified weekly throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. Similarly, biologists tracked four eastern

elementary schools. The Moose Plate program funds a significant portion (approximately 25%) of Fish and Game’s work protecting and restoring threatened and endangered wildlife and keeping common species healthy in New Hampshire. Each time you buy or renew a New Hampshire moose plate, it also helps provide critical finan-

Information gathered through this study will be used to identify priority conservation actions to implement with landowners and other partners in the future. Moose Plate dollars have also gone toward restoration of American shad and river herring to the Merrimack and Connecticut rivers. River herring (alewife and blueback herring) and American shad populations were counted, and both rivers were stocked with fish to try to increase their numbers. Fish habitat surveys were conducted in rivers and streams to determine the quantity and quality of fisheries habitat. Water temperature data was collected in streams in which Fish and Game staff also conducts standardized fish surveys. This information provides the basis for the wise management and conservation of fish populations in these streams, including the Dead Diamond, Swift Diamond, Saco, Wildcat, Beebe, McQueston Brook, Warner, Jewell Hill Brook, Thompson Brook, and Ammonoosuc River watersheds. cial match that allows the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program to qualify for federal funds known as State Wildlife Grants. Thanks in part to Moose Plate dollars: New England cottontails and Karner blue butterflies continue to benefit from habitat restoration and captive-breeding programs. Critical habitat for Blanding’s turtle, New England cottontail, and other wildlife has been permanently conserved. Biologists continue to evaluate the presence/absence of wild brook trout in areas of New Hampshire where no previous data describing their status was available. The Taking Action for Wildlife program offers dozens of workshops each year to towns, land trusts, and regional planning committees. Common and roseate tern numbers continue to increase, while Arctic tern numbers held steady at three nesting pairs in 2017. In addition to helping wildlife, the Moose Plate supports key conservation, natural, and cultural resource initiatives across New Hampshire.
