Healthy Tips From Dr. Fink

How do I feed my growing family? A question asked during a recent conversation with a dad concerned about the diets and lack of exercise of his two adolescent kids. He said he has never had any nutritional training or counseling and really has no idea about proper nutrition. In his words “the information out there is so conflicting, you just don’t know what to believe anymore. It just happened that an excellent article by a Dr. Bill Hemmer DC crossed m y d e s k at this time so I’ve borrowed a few quotes from him. First and foremost you do need to put some thought and planning into your grocery shopping. If you go to the store ‘unarmed’ you’re apt to come home with a lot of stuff best left on the shelves. Learn to read l a b e l s and stay away from prepackaged foods as much as possible. In addition to not really being good food choices they are often more expensive. As a rule most of your shopping should be in the outer edges of the store. Don’t venture down the aisles, (especially if you have kids in tow)unless you are going

for some good organic rice, beans or canned fish, olive oil, foods you know are good choices and to restock your pantry. The majority of the foods in the aisles are not your best choices. Dr. Hemmer tells his patients “there are really just 3 different types of food: carbohydrates, fats and proteins and for most people their diet should consist of equal parts of all 3. People just do not want to believe that we need good healthy fat in our diet! Hemmer writes “If you don’t have enough saturated fat in your diet, the amount of insulation around your nerves will begin to lessen and nerve issues will continue to get worse. Dr Hemmer also points out that the FDA has decided to remove cholesterol amounts from food labeling. He states that “Cholesterol is the building block for all steroid hormones, including the sex and adrenal hormones. If you’re suffering from nerve pain or hormone imbalance, maybe you should consider the good fat missing in your diet? Next we come to carbohydrates. We all know that sugar is bad for us, but it’s hard to resist. Most every celebration has sugar in abundance! If you ate some of the foods our kids are eating you would probably suffer headaches, achy all over, nausea, just to name a few. If you have crabby kids, kids with mood swings, hyper active, teary, etc. take a look at how much sugar they are consuming. If they start their day with a bowl of store

bought processed cereal, white bread toast (slathered in margarine) and a glass of juice, you are already heading down the wrong path. The cereal has been processed beyond recognition of the original grain, and since it has little food value they’ve added vitamins to “fortify it and make it “healthy and of course sugar to make it taste good and addictive to kids. Don’t even get me started on the High fructose corn syrup added to virtually everything these days! Dr. Hemmer writes “I also warn against high fructose corn syrup. It is like sugar on steroids and wreaks havoc on every one of our major organ systems. When I say carbohydrates, I am referring to complex carbohydrates “such as green veggies needed for proper bowel flora maintenance See fink on 5

“I have tried many different ways to get myself back to myself. I was tired, bloated, no energy, brain fog, just didn’t feel right. It has been four weeks and I’m actually feeling myself again, now compared to years of not feeling good, this is awesome! Mohs Surgery To Address Skin Cancers The following was brought to you by Dermatology & Skin Health of Dover, NH. So you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer. Scary. But, the good news is, it’s very curable. So, less scary. Skin cancer is common (unfortunately). More than two million Americans will be diagnosed with it this year, and about one in five will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime. One in five. That’s a lot.

What is Mohs surgery? According to www.skincancer.org: It is the excision of a cancer from the skin, followed by the detailed mapping and complete microscopic examination of the cancerous tissue and the margins surrounding it. If the margins are indeed cancer-free, the surgery is ended. If not, more tissue is removed, and this procedure is repeated until the margins of the final tissue examined are clear of cancer. The beautiful thing about Mohs is it takes into consideration the healthy tissue that surrounds the affected area. Cure rates are high. Due to the complete systematic methods of Mohs microscopic search for the roots of the skin cancer in question, the surgery offers the best chances amongst the five standard ways of complete removal. We’re talking 98% higher with Mohs than the other standard methods. Look, cancer is not a fun thing to talk about. Being that skin cancer is so prevalent it’s important to research your options in the event you’re diagnosed. So, in support of that, the informational lines are open. Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

I’m sure by now we’ve all heard and/or have seen the great sinkhole of I-93 north, in Concord. I did not see the hole in person, but the pictures were absolutely stunning. To imagine that the road was normal in appearance and in a matter of minutes it underwent dramatic changes is startling. It was a stark reminder that an average day, can be changed rather dramatically and unexpectedly. Further, it can change and there may be nothing we can do about it. That is truly a concept, that I find frightening. The thing about sinkholes is that while they seem to occur suddenly, they often have long underlying histories. The NH DOT said that this sinkhole was probably caused by a culvert letting go that dates back to the 1950s. My question is this: are we aware that our health can function in a very similar way. Normal one minute and less than ideal the next. Or do we live as if we are invincible? Like we will never be sick and we will never slow down? The truth is that our health, if not looked after properly, can be much like a sinkhole. Meaning: many illnesses, diseases, and health issues appear to crop up instantly or surprisingly, but most have a long running underlying cause. The difference between your health and a sinkhole, is that you are not helpless in your health concerns. Most diseases that kill us, do take awhile to form, but most are also lifestyle related. This means, you are in the driver seat. You don’t have to be a victim.

You don’t have to sit back and wait for a disaster, a bad diagnosis, or terrible health reports. You don’t have to have your own personal sinkhole. You can take control of your health and greatly improve your long term health picture. Some of the most common preventable diseases are diabetes, some cancers, stroke, heart disease, and lung disease. That’s not to say, that in some cases, these diseases can occur and were unpreventable. That can happen. It does mean, however, all your risk of these issues can be improved with certain lifestyle choices. Here are some easy ways to potentially decrease your risks of the common preventable diseases: 1) Stop smoking: shouldn’t this be obvious now? Save money and save your health. 2) Lose weight: this can help with your risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and stroke. Simply put, we all need to move daily and focus on eating more fruits/veggies and less processed food. 3) Decrease stress: exercise, daily journaling, and daily prayer/mediation have all been thought to help with stress, which

is a factor in depression, hypertension, and even heart disease. 4) Visit you chiropractor: Chiropractic is not a treatment of those preventable diseases. However, a common complaint I hear in our offices when first meeting someone is that back pain prevents them from daily exercise. Movement helps control weight, decrease stress, and decreases depression. 5) Drink more water: I think most people are dehydrated. Your body doesn’t run well like this. Try drinking at least 64 ounces daily and, depending on your activity level or your size, you may need more. Don’t wait for your health to fail. I’d love to be invincible, but we are not. There is no free lunch, and when it comes to our health, each choice we make today is helping inform what our future looks like. My advice to all of us, is to do your best, take your best shot and stack the odds in your favor by making good choices today that create life long good health.

(BPT) - Three years ago biking down the block would not have been possible for motivational speaker Roy Roden, one of the 1.5 million Americans who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. But recently he embarked on a journey he calls the PD Challenge -- a bike ride from British Colombia to San Francisco to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease. His message to others with Parkinson’s is powerfully simple - stay active, be your own advocate, keep a positive attitude, and don’t give up hope. As a former personal trainer, Roden says staying active is critical and credits exercise with making him stronger both mentally and physically. The benefits of physical activity are well established in Parkinson’s disease, and it’s no coincidence that Roden chose a cycling trek for the PD Challenge. “There was a time when I couldn’t care for myself, let alone engage in the activities I love, and I’m determined to do something bigger than myself,” Roden said. Roden was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009. His symptoms worsened over time until he couldn’t brush his teeth or feed himself, let alone live his once active life filled with exercise, travel and the outdoors. He was taking 10 medications daily with waning effectiveness and debilitating side effects that even made it difficult for him to concentrate on a game of Monopoly with his children. But today, life is an inspiring ride for 57-year-old Roy. To manage his Parkinson’s disease, Roden decided to pursue Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

therapy, a treatment option that when used with medications may improve quality of life and motor function more than medications alone, and may allow medication reduction. The therapy uses a surgically implanted medical device, similar to a cardiac pacemaker, to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas of the brain to reduce some of the most disabling motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, including shaking, stiffness and movement difficulties. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without DBS, as it gave me my life back. Along the ride people ask about my connection to Parkinson’s and are surprised when I tell them I have it.” After receiving DBS Therapy, Roden said that his quality of life and symptoms, such as shaking hands and difficulty walking, have noticeably improved. As a result, Roden was inspired to accomplish something extraordinary and offer hope to other Parkinson’s patients. Thus, the PD Challenge was born. “In the absence of a cure, my goal is to educate people with Parkinson’s about the opportunities they have to live an active life with this debilitating disease,”

said Roy. “DBS therapy is an important treatment option for Parkinson’s disease that has stood the test of time as an FDA approved therapy. It consistently allows those suffering to experience lasting improvements that make their quality of life meaningfully better,” said Jonathan Jagid, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Health System, and also Roy’s neurosurgeon. “Roy has had great results and his efforts to give back are an inspiring example to the Parkinson’s community nationwide.” Results with the therapy vary, and not every individual will receive the same benefits or experience the same complications. Patients should discuss potential risks and benefits of DBS with their physician. Medtronic DBS Therapy is the only FDA-approved DBS therapy in the United States for Parkinson’s disease, as well as essential tremor and dystonia (through a Humanitarian Device Exemption). More information about Medtronic DBS Therapy can be found at www. medtronicdbs.com.

You need to choose some good lean meats, chicken, fish, eggs to name a few. You can also get protein in your diet from plant choices. An old rule of thumb to form a perfect meat free protein is a mix of 3 from this list; legume/bean, rice/grain/ corn, nut, seed. You could have granola for breakfast with oatmeal, nuts & sunflower seeds and get a healthy mix including protein. Or you could make a rice, beans, corn dish for dinner with some tasty spices added for another healthy protein option.
