Healthy Tips From Dr. Fink

How To Choose Your Doctor Or What To Look For In A Good Doctor

by Dr. Charles Fink

FInk Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

I recently heard a radio interview on this very topic involving two respected Medical Doctors. It occurred to me that so often, especially in the case of the elderly, people tend to just accept what the Doctor says and not ask questions. Questions are OK and important. Often your questions will reveal to your Doctor important information you may have overlooked. For example, will this medication keep me awake at night because I have a difficult time sleeping. Hmm says the Doctor, I didn’t realize you were having a problem sleeping. One of the Doctors made an excellent point that I would like to share. Write down your questions, concerns and symptoms prior to your appointment so that you can make the best use of your time. Don’t spend time discussing your relatives problems or asking the Doctor about unrelated information. He is busy and has set aside an allotted amount of time just for you. Stay focused on why you are there and make the most of his and

your time. Don’t wait until you are near the end of your appointment to add one more thing. Get it all out early in the appointment to insure the Doctor has all the information he needs and so he has time to cover it all, or to at least focus on the most important. I tell my patients, everything is connected to everything. Don’t assume your knee problem is just a knee problem. It could be a foot problem that is affecting your knee. Bring a friend or relative with you to your appointment. Someone you feel you can trust and ask them to take notes. Many of us will come away from an appointment having forgotten something we really wanted to discuss or missing some important information the Doctor may have given you. If the Doctor interrupts you early in your appointment and does not appear to be interested in what you have to say, he may not be the Doctor for you. You’ve made an appointment and set aside your valuable time to see him and he should allow you the courtesy of hearing you out. It is OK to ‘Shop’ your Doctor. Ask your friends and check out his office or website. Look into what others are saying about him. Be reasonable in your demands and respect his time. If you’ve had this problem for an extended amount of time, don’t expect a miracle cure. On a lighter note; “The best six Doctors anywhere and no one can deny it, Are sunshine, water, rest, air,

exercise & diet‌.From a nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields in What the River Knows (1990). If you want to be your best, feel your best, think clearly and be calm relaxed and at peace, try to combine all 6. I promise a healthy mix will bring you into balance and promote better health. Some people may need a little extra help and that is where Chiropractic, exercise, stretching and a guide to better eating & whole food supplements come into play. Check out our website, www.finkchiro.net for more info, or call 5244555 to make an appointment. I will answer your questions and lead you in the right direction and if I can’t help will direct you to someone who can.

LRGHealthcare’s Food and Nutrition Services department (Lakes Region General Hospital and Franklin Regional Hospital) was awarded the Health Champion Award in the workplace category by the Partnership for Public Health at the Partnership’s Annual Meeting held September 24th at Steele Hill Resort. Each year, the Partnership for Public Health recognizes an individual, community group, and workplace as a Health Champion for their achievements in promoting health and wellness in the towns within Belknap County as well as Danbury, Franklin, Hill, and Northfield. Categories of health include healthy eating and nutrition focusing on access to healthy foods and/or implementation of healthy food policies/practices; physical activity/exercise offered both on or off site; tobacco cessation through opportunities to quit smoking and/ or implementation of tobacco free workplace policies; stress management education; and promotion of general employee health with health risk assessments, screenings, and injury prevention. LRGHealthcare’s Food and Nutrition Services was thrilled to be selected as the workplace Health Champion. Jason Carter, Director of Food and Nutrition Services comments, “It’s an honor and privilege to accept this award on behalf of the Food & Nutrition Services teams at both LRGH and FRH. The staff, along with the support from LRGHealthcare leadership, are dedicated to the mission of strengthening the well-being of our community through the meals we serve and have worked relentlessly towards that

Food and Nutrition Services at LRGHealthcare has been hard at work over the last few years to provide healthy and delicious choices for their patients, staff, and visitors. Their goal has been to offer more healthy options and make it easy for people to make the right choices. How are they doing it? Here are some highlights: •The daily “Plate It Up Rightâ€? special offering a meal that is less than or equal to 550 calories, 5 grams of saturated fat, 5 grams of sugar, and 550 milligrams of sodium. •The “traffic lightâ€? program which color codes items and meals to help customers quickly identify foods that are healthier than others. The “traffic lightâ€? on each item or meal guide people to eat lots (green light), eat less (yellow light), or eat rarely (red light). •The rooftop garden is growing some fresh herbs, spices, and produce to

be used in the hospitals’ recipes. •New relationships with local farms/establishments such as Miles Smith Farm, Woodshed Coffee, Vermont Bread Company, Beans and Greens Farm, and other local growers of produce are helping LRGHealthcare provide local, healthy options and promote the use of local, sustainable food. •They signed the Healthier Hospital Initiative which states they’ll work towards more balanced menus, healthier beverages, and more local/sustainable foods over the next 1-3 years. •Later this month, they will join 230 healthcare facilities across the nation to participate in National Food Day where they are joining Health Care without Harm in efforts to serve healthy, sustainable, affordable food. Those participating will celebrate by serving meat or poultry that is produced without the use of routine, nontherapeutic antibiotics. You will find this special food item on October 22 at LRGH and October 23 at FRH.

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Fall, with a blast of crisp air, is upon us. This is easily my favorite season of the year. Autumn trappings like foliage, corn mazes, apple picking and of course football. The highlight of the fall for my kids is Halloween, although Pumpkin Fest might be a close second . Costumes and trick or treat come along, and just for a moment everyone likes to be a little scared. Being scared or having a little fearful moment is fun occasionally , thus the popularity of scary movies, haunted houses and hayrack rides. Obviously, that’s all silly scariness and fun. When it comes to the real fear people experience, the spectrum ranges from very serious stuff like death to stuff maybe you don’t need to be so scared of like frogs (one of my wife’s fears). One thing you should have less fear of is disease and sickness. I say this for two reasons: 1) some people become so scared of their health that they actually avoid their doctor and 2) the most common killers today are lifestyle related, so you have some degree of control. First if you have health concerns, seriously it is better to know than to stay in the dark. If you really do have an issue that needs to be dealt with, the longer you wait

to get a check up, the more difficult things typically are to deal with. So truly don’t wait, get proactive. Better yet, view your health through the lens of prevention instead of reaction. As far as lifestyle disease goes, the medical journal, The Lancet, released the results of a study called The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, which features a large group of expert scientists. The findings were pretty amazing. 20 years ago more people suffered from maternal and child illness, malnutrition, and infectious disease. Now, however, less people deal with these issues and more deal with heart disease and cancers, which often have lifestyle factors involved. In fact, smoking and alcohol use have surpassed malnutrition as risk factors for disease. The conclusions are pretty commonsense: many of our most feared diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes can be avoided or a decreased risk for you with simple lifestyle choices. These lifestyle choices are the things you’ve always known you should do, but may not be doing. Simply, start exercising, make healthy food choices (including enough water), calm your mind with meditation/ prayer, use alcohol in moderation, quit using tobacco (seriously), and get plenty of sleep. These are really simple things. Once again we see small changes add up to big benefits. There are many reasons we avoid healthy changes, but most of our excuses are just that... excuses! If you are avoiding them because of mon-

ey, stop because most save money now and will definitely save money in long term health costs. If you don’t make lifestyle choices due to lack of time as your excuse, look past that excuse, it’s completely false. Everyone can find 30 minutes to exercise and grabbing a water instead of a soda is simple. Don’t be scared to make changes. Don’t be scared to face your health. Hiding and avoiding does nothing but make things worse. This Halloween keep the scary stuff fun and safe and most of all know that when it comes to your health you don’t have to be scared, you simply need to be proactive.

New Healthcare Decision Tools Should be Tailored to the Needs of the Individual Patient By Alan Balch Imagine the flood of questions that follows a cancer diagnosis. How much longer do I have to live? How much am I willing to pay for treatment? What side effects am I willing to bear? These aren’t easy questions. So health care providers and insurance companies are trying to help doctors guide their patients through the process with tools that aid in selecting the best treatment regimens. In June, the American Society of Clinical Oncology released a framework it hopes physicians eventually will use to compare new cancer therapies with established treatments — the clinical benefits, side effects, and costs. Last year, Anthem produ ced a program designed to determine the best treatment options for some cancer patients and provide incentives for physicians to prescribe those treatments. Such efforts face a common limitation: They do not adequately reflect the complex range of issues that inform patient treatment decisions. For example, some incorporate only drug prices into their cost models — one issue of concern to patients, but not the only one. Developing precision treatments can be expensive, and the resulting prices for these specialty products can be high. Because novel therapies are often introduced to patients with advanced diseases, they may demonstrate only a modest benefit. In the latest is-

sue of JAMA Oncology, for example, researchers attempted to determine an appropriate price for an experimental lung cancer drug that extends life, according to clinical trial data, by between six weeks and two months, on average, for some stage-IV lung cancer patients. They calculated a low value for the treatment. If patients’ decisions about novel treatments are determined by rigid calculations of narrowly defined costs versus benefits, they’ll shy away from these treatments — or insurance companies may restrict or deny access to them. My organization, the Patient Advocate Foundation, provides case management support to tens of thousands of patients each year suffering from financial hardships. Last year, the primary medical debt issues for our patients were transportation expenses, followed by co-pays for hospital and doctor visits. To make an informed decision about a treatment’s value, patients need to know much more about their likely out-ofpocket costs, beyond just the relevant medications. People consider a wide variety of factors when buying a new car or refrigerator. Surely, applicable lessons exist for health care, especially with consumers shouldering an increasing share of their costs. Frameworks can be designed to enable physicians to help their patients navigate health care decisions. But the frameworks also are likely to be used to determine what

the patient can receive and what will be covered by insurance. To avoid inappropriate rationing of care or limiting of choice that may be contrary to a patient’s best care, these tools should address myriad risks, costs, and benefits that reflect the complexity of treatment choices. Patients and their providers don’t benefit from rigid formulas based on limited variables; they need sophisticated models that allow patients to determine what is important and then compare treatments. In a consumerbased medical system, this approach will ensure that treatment decisions are based on the needs of the individual patient. Alan Balch is CEO of the Patient Advocate Foundation.

5 Surprising Superfoods For Baby Boomers (BPT) - An estimated 77 million baby boomers represent the largest generation of Americans born in U.S. history. Many are embracing their golden years and taking a proactive approach to their well-being. If you are a boomer, you understand nutrition is fundamental to maintaining your health. But do you know some foods are particularly powerful in helping you age well? “Certain foods provide nutrients that are extremely beneficial for baby boomers,” says Kristen Johnson, registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook “Target To Table: Healthy and Delicious Meals One Superfood at a Time.” Johnson’s top five superfoods for baby boomers include: Fresh cold water fish -“On top of being a delicious lean protein, fish is loaded with omegas3s that keep our brains healthy as we age,” says Johnson. “EPA and DHA are the type of omega-3 fat found in fish and are especially important for a healthy heart, hormonal balance, energy and mood.” Since most of us don’t have access to fresh, wildcaught or cold-water fish on a daily basis, she suggests taking a high-quality cod liver oil daily, like Nordic Naturals OrangeFlavored Cod Liver Oil. “There’s no fishy smell and a quality you can taste,” says Johnson. “Also, cod liver oil naturally contains vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium.” Super seeds - Certain seeds, like flax, chia and hemp seeds, have extensive health benefits and more boomers are incorporating them into their daily meals and snacks. “Flaxseeds and chia

diet including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, lemons, limes, apples and bananas. Dried fruits like figs, dates, goji berries and raisins are high in the calming mineral magnesium which helps to relax the mind and body and aid in digestion. Organic virgin coconut oil - Lately there has been a lot of buzz about coconut oil and for good reason, explains Johnson. “Coconut oil is a healthy saturated seeds are high in omega3s and fiber and contain antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties,” says Johnson. Easy ways to start incorporating seeds into your daily routine is to add them to smoothies or sprinkle on yogurt or oatmeal. Super vegetables - “Vegetables provide many nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate, vitamins A, E, C and are alkalizing, meaning they neutralize acids in the body and help your body thrive and stay mineralized,” says Johnson. Try to get a variety of super vegetables into your daily diet including leafy greens, bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms, beets, celery, carrots, onions and garlic. Leafy greens and broccoli are especially high in calcium and vitamin C needed to keep your immune system healthy and prevent sickness. Beets and celery are extremely detoxifying. Garlic is part of the onion family and contributes to a healthy immune system while helping to lower inflammation. Super fruits - “Fruits are packed with flavor and are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, cancer-fighting antioxidants, and are extremely alkalizing,” says Johnson. Strive to get a variety of super fruits in your daily

fat high in lauric, capric and caprylic acids which have antiviral and antifungal properties contributing to a healthy digestion,” she says. “Coconut oil also contains medium-chain fatty acids that can aid in a healthy metabolism.”Try using coconut oil in baked goods or to replace other oils when sautéing or stirfrying. It’s also a fantastic butter substitute on toast and other foods.
