Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Something Stinks

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Last year I wrote on how I would no longer spend my valuable time trying to come up with new ideas for New Hampshire lottery tickets. After having some success in the 1990s by giving them the idea for the now legendary “Pot Holes and Frost Heaves ticket, I continued to wrack my brain for years in developing even new and better scratch ticket themes that they could use to get people to waste their money on them. I was basically ignored when I gave them, free of charge, such great tickets ideas like The Town Meeting and the Presidential Primary tickets. They never used either of these or any of my other great ideas. So, after years of trying to be a good citizen in helping the state, I decided to stop. Leaving them to their own defenses they have come up with nothing but clever duds over the years. This year they are at it again in what just might be the cleverest dud of all. It’s the scratch ticket that smells like bacon after you scratch it. I’m serious. Maybe this sounded like a great idea when it was developed by some kid fresh out of college with a degree in scratch ticket design, but it is an idea that reeks of problems in the long run. I would imagine it might eventually cost the state

more than the revenue it brings in. The first thing that comes to mind it that it sets up for a bunch of scenarios for lawsuits against the state and, if not the state, the convenience store that sells the tickets. Say, for example, someone buys a bunch of these new scratch tickets and brings them home. Maybe after scratching a few, the person finally reveals a significant winner. In their excitement, they ignore the rest of the losing tickets and high tail it down to the store to collect their prize. In their haste, their dog, attracted to the extremely tempting smell of bacon, devours the remaining scratch tickets and becomes ill causing the dog’s owner, just coming down from his short-lived euphoria, to rush the dog to the vets to be saved. The whole thing eventually costing the owner much more than he might ever actually win in scratch tickets over the course of his lifetime. To compensate for his own carelessness, the dog owner now has no choice, according to his lawyer, than to sue the state, the convenience store owner, the store cashier and the scratch ticket manufacturer for tens of millions of dollars. It wouldn’t be pretty. There is also the public relations nightmare which will ensue with the introduction of scratch tickets that smell like bacon. PETA, of course, will demand that it stop, holding protests outside of the lottery commission offices. Then there will be the outrage from the vegans who will want their own scratch ticket. (I would suggest one that smells like broccoli which has

been in an airtight container for a few days but they won’t listen to me.) Then there is the religious groups that don’t eat pork, they would insist on their own scratch ticket smell. Eventually, so many different groups would have to be appeased that the convenience store would soon become an olfactory nightmare and business would go down as customers stayed away causing scratch ticket sales to decrease and the state finding another budget shortfall. Of course, the taxpayers have to ante up for this new idea. The lottery commission is already aggressively marketing the new bacon smelling scratch ticket with a truck that is going around with people handing out free bacon strips. That’s got to cost something. I’d imagine that right now someone is hard at work (9-4, Monday through Friday with two breaks, a lunch hour and holidays off) coming up with a clever phrase utilizing the state’s mandated boilerplate of “Live Free and Something to promote the ticket. Odds are that “Live Free and Scratch and “Live Free and Sniff are in the running. So, there is a lot the state should have considered before putting this new scratch ticket on the market. It seems that just like all of their past work it has been a rush to judgment and they shouldn’t be shocked if any of the scenarios I mentioned become realities. Maybe next time they’ll use one of my ideas. Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com

Sen. Bradley Leave The Renewable Energy Fund Alone To The Editor: Sen. Bradley is proposing a bill to take the money from the Renewable Energy Fund (REF) and use it for weatherization of low income homes. Weatherization is a very good cause but we already have a low income weatherization program that has ample funding. The REF was set up for renewable energy, primarily solar electricity, solar hot water and biomass heating systems: and that’s what it should be used for. Because of this fund solar electricity (Photovoltaic, PV) for example has gone from $9/watt to $3/watt installed before rebate and tax credit and about $1.50/watt after incentives. The cost has come down and the Kilowatts (KW) of installed PV has increased. The last 6 years (since the incentives started) is the first time in my life time and in the last 150 years in the US where we have seen increases in renewable energy. Taking money from the REF would kill the industry that is just getting started. Prior to 2009 there was about 250 Megawatts (MW) of total PV in the US; by the end of 2014 it is over 17,000 MW of total PV. This proves that the incentives are working by getting costs down and volume up. In 150 years the world has consumed most of the easily accessible oil which

Our Story

took over a million years to create. Yet we consume it at a rate of over 5000 times the rate of which it takes to create. At what point will we realize we are running out? Future generations will think we are idiots for not reacting sooner. The US consumes about 20% of the world’s energy with 5% of the world’s population. So Senator Bradley wants to slow down or stop what progress we have made in the last 6 years? Climate change and the effect of fossil fuels is also an important issue. See www.350.org for that discussion. Yes, I am a solar PV contractor but I’m not writing this because it will affect my business. The industry needs to grow, not stop or slow down! Frase Electric LLC has installed over 1 Megawatt of PV and none of it would have been possible without the state incentive funded by the REF. Please contact Sen Bradley at jeb.bradley@leg.state.nh.us and the other senators on the Senate Energy Committee http://www.gencourt. state.nh.us/Senate/committees/committee. and ask them to leave the REF money for what it was intended for. Do this not for my business but for our children and our children’s children!

President Obama Went AWOL To The Editor: On January 11, 2015 40 leaders from various countries and 1.3 million people participated in anti-terrorism events in Paris. President Obama was AWOL, and he was only represented by our ambassador to France. It is difficult to believe our President overlooked the need to be in Paris for the anti-terrorism rally. Based on his previous comments it is quite possible he decided he did not want to offend Islam by appearing at the antiterrorism unity march. In the past he has refused to label the multitude of attacks conducted by Muslims as Islamic terrorist attacks. He said “we are not at war with Islam, but it sure appears Islam is at war with us. After all, what is the religion of almost every terrorist who has attacked Western civilization in the past 50 years? President Obama, you just offended every freedom loving person in the world. Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire, is one of the easiest resorts to get to anytime since it is only 2.5 miles up the Kancamagus Highway from I-93’s famous exit 32. The short drive through downtown Lincoln past all kinds of snowsport shops, stores and eateries is a temptation for me to stop but I’ll wait until I am on my way back home because I like hitting the slopes as soon as the lift rope is dropped. The “NAACP Bombing” ... Or The Barbershop Bang? COLORADO SPRINGS --

From the liberal media’s coverage of my beautiful adopted hometown, you’d think we live in a by Michelle Malkin KKK-infested Syndicated Columnist hotbed where every person of color fears for his or her life. Take a look at these ominous headlines: --”Bombing of NAACP headquarters harkens to bad old days” -- MSNBC --”Colorado Springs explosion recalls violence against NAACP” -- The Washington Post --”NAACP Bombing Evokes Memories of Civil Rights Strife” -- Time magazine --”Explosion outside NAACP office could be a hate crime, officials say” -- Los Angeles Times Let me and my brown skin assure you, America: Bull Connor is not running loose on our streets. Water fountains here in the Rocky Mountain West are segregated by height, not race. The only bonfires I know of are being set outside by local residents roasting s’mores. Never one to let reality intrude on a ripe race hustle, Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee claimed last week that the so-called NAACP bombing “undermines years of progress” and now “demands federal review” of the case. Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis, who clearly missed the thousands of local, state, national and international newspaper, magazine, web and cable news stories on the incident, lamented: “It reminds me of another period. These stories

cannot be swept under the rug.” Professional agitator and social justice detective Shaun King, based in Ferguson, Mo., accused a phantom “domestic terrorist” of perpetrating the alleged crime. CNN immediately blared an apocalyptic headline about my town that invoked “domestic terrorism” (this from the feckless news channel that pixelates Mohammed cartoons and whitewashes proven jihadi terrorism). And the national president of the NAACP is now headed out here for a visit this weekend. But the so-called “NAACP bombing” ... isn’t. There is simply no evidence yet to label it as such. The FBI reported in a press conference: “We don’t know who was targeted.” One top local law enforcement source told me this week that, in his years of experience, “this in no way looks like anything that can be called ‘targeted.’” The case could just as fairly be called “The Barbershop Bang” as “The NAACP Bombing.” The most incendiary act I’ve witnessed so far came from inflammatory MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes, who “reported” on the “extensive damage” of the “bombing” by fraudulently passing off a photo of a bombed-out kebab shop in France as a photo of the “NAACP bombing.” While racial opportunists rush to invoke Jim Crow and incite panic for political gain, doubts and unanswered questions about the incident are piling up. “Our Brains Are On Fire” May Not Be A Good Thing On January 20, the Senate Education Committee heard testimony on Senate Bill 101. This bill would “prohibit the State Board by Jane Cormier f r o m r e q u i r Hooksett, NH. ing implementation of Common Core Standard”. The bill actually states: “(b) The common core state standards developed jointly by the National Governors Association for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers shall not be required by the department of education or the state board of education to be implemented in any school or school district in this state.” We have discussed the canard of Common Core many times these past two years, but perhaps columnist George Will puts it most succinctly. “Common Core supporters say it’s voluntary. It has been driven by the (federal government’s) use of bribes and

coercion – in the form of waivers from No Child Left Behind or Race to the Top money…Watch the verb ‘align’ in this argument. (Common Core supporters) are going to align the SAT and the ACT tests with the curriculum. They’re going to align the textbooks with the tests. And sooner or later, you inevitably have a national curriculum that disregards the creativity of federalism.” So, Common Core is really a shell game to nationalize curriculum without SAYING you are nationalizing curriculum. Very clever. And, there are way more questions than answers available. But, the more you ask the folks of the NH Dept. of Education, the more confused one becomes. 1.Standards were supposedly “tested”. We cannot find out exactly WHERE. Can someone at the NHDOE tell us WHERE these standards were actually tested? 2.Can a school system opt OUT of the Smarter Balance AssessSee cormier on 24

Foreign Policy Afterthoughts in State of Union Address UNITED NATIONS

- Proclaiming an end to the American economic recession and declaring that “the shadow of crisis is past,” by John J. Metzler President BaSyndicated Columnist rack Obama addressed a skeptical Republican-controlled Congress in the annual State of the Union Address. Yet the same speech offered a fuzzy view of key foreign policy challenges and, more importantly, no plan on solving other vital concerns. As is typical in such aspirational speeches, there is a laundry list of proposals, a broad brush view of wider policy initiatives, a pandering to interest groups, but a quiet realization that realistically few of the initiatives will get beyond this prime time pitch. After being trounced in last November’s mid-term Congressional elections, President Obama is also acting with the political handicap of being a lame- duck president, serving his last two years in office. Terrorism - “First we stand united with people around the world who have been targeted by terrorists--from a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, “ Obama stated without a necessary mention of Nigeria. While adding, “We continue to hunt down terrorists and dismantle their networks,” he did not pro-

claim, as he did in the past, that Al-Qaida terrorists have been “substantially defeated or degraded.” I guess the Libyan, Yemeni, and Syrian crises beg to differ with his earlier optimism. Iraq/Syria - Significantly while stating that the U.S. is using military power against ISIS in Iraq and Syria (they were not even on the Administration’s radar screen last year being described as Junior Varsity), now Obama conceded the battle against this new head of the terror Hydra “will take time, it will require focus, but we will succeed.” Thus he has called upon Congress to pass a resolution to “authorize the use of force against ISIL. We need that authority.” The President is right but late. When American air operations began anew in Iraq and Syria last August, the Administration acted without the consent of Congress. The War Powers Act of 1973 demands that the President seek Congressional approval within 60 days. This legal deadline past last October. Bruce Ackerman, constitutional scholar and Professor of Law at Yale, in an earlier op-ed in the New York Times, “Obama’s Betrayal of the Constitution,” stressed the importance of Congressional authorization for ongoing military actions against ISIS. Ukraine - Regarding Ukraine, Obama stated the U.S. is “opposing Russian aggression, and supporting Ukraine’s democracy, and reassuring our NATO allies.”

He added, “Today it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated with its economy in tatters.” True, but Washington’s relations with Moscow have now dangerously

reverted to a Cold War-lite freeze. Was the once trumpeted “Reset with Russia” a policy Potemkin Village? In a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine the day after

‘Diversity’ In Action Islamic terrorist attacks in Europe, and European governments’ counter-attacks are more than just a passing news story. Europe is curby Thomas Sowell rently in the Syndicated Columnist process of paying the price for years of importing millions of people from a culture hostile to the fundamental values of Western culture. And this is by no means the last of the installments of that price, to be paid in blood and lives, for smug elites’ Utopian self-indulgences in moral preening and gushing with the magic word “diversity.” Generations yet unborn will still be paying the price, whether in large or small installments, depending on how long it takes for the West to jettison Utopianism and come to grips with reality. Meanwhile, in the United States, no one seems to be drawing any lessons about the dangers of importing millions of people from fundamentally different cultures across our open border. In America, “diversity” has still not yet lost its magical ability to stop thought in its tracks and banish facts into the outer darkness. Perhaps here, as in Europe, that verbal magic can only be washed away in the blood of innocent victims, many of them yet unborn. To cross our open border with Mexico, you don’t have to be Mexican or even from Central America. You can be from Iran, Syria or other hotbeds of Middle Eastern terrorism. It is one of the monumental examples of political irresponsibility that the southern border has not been secured during administrations of either party, despite promises and posturing.

Many fine people have come here from Mexico. But, as with any other group, some are just the opposite. With open borders, however, we don’t even know how many people who cross that border are Mexican, much less anything more relevant, like their education, diseases, criminal records or terrorist ties. There are some politicians -both Democrats and Republicans -- who just want to get the issue behind them, and are prepared to leave the consequences for others to deal with in the future, just as they are leaving a staggering national debt for others to deal with in the future. These consequences include irreversible changes in the American population. Ethnic “leaders” and welfare state goodies guarantee the fragmentation of the population, with never-ending strife among the fragments. People who enter the country illegally will get, not only equal benefits with the American people who created those benefits, they will get more than many American citizens, thanks to affirmative action. We cannot simply let in everyone who wants to come to America, or there will be no America to come to. Cultures matter -- and not all cultures are mutually compatible, as Europeans are belatedly learning, the hard way. And “assimilation” is a dirty word to multiculturalists. State and local officials who blithely violate their oath to uphold the law, and indulge themselves in the moral posturing of declaring their domains to be “sanctuaries” for people who entered the country illegally, are unlikely to reconsider until disastrous consequences become far too big to ignore -- which is to say, until it is too late. Meanwhile, harsh punishments are reserved for people in business who fail to carry out the See Sowell on 24

Healthy Tips From Dr. Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

Boost Your Immune Function Every year the medical profession and government authorities encourage citizens in many developed countries to get immunized against the current form of influenza virus. While the decision to get vaccinated is an individual one with both pros and cons, consider that a natural approach, namely supplementation with specific nutrients such as Vitamin D, can boost immune function and may play an important role in the prevention of respiratory tract infections. During the winter months Vitamin D production in the skin declines, this happens because the most generally available source of Vitamin D is sunlight. Most immune cells contain vitamin D receptors that allow vitamin D to enter cells and exert its effects on immune cell behavior. In simple terms vitamin D appears to make immune cells better able to fulfill their primary function- defense! I recommend vitamin D for all ages as well as a variety of other vitamins and minerals that may be lacking in our diet. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are getting all you need in your diet. It’s best to check with a professional when deciding which to take. I recommend whole food supplements and carry an array of organically grown supplements. Our Immune system becomes suppressed when we are stressed. Stress

results in the over activity of the adrenal gland and the release of cortisol into the bloodstream. Cortisol is the stress hormone that promotes the fight or flight response. Yoga, meditation, recreational activities are some of the ways you can help to restore relaxation. Hand in hand with stress is the need for a good nights sleep. Our bodies only have so much energy to hold us up against gravity . If you are sleep deprived and have what chiropractors refer to as subluxations you are using too much energy just to stand and you will be more susceptible to virus or the like. A visit to the chiropractor is another way to boost your immune function. Excessive sugar intake which with ingestion inhibits the ability of white blood cells to kill germs is another immune suppressor. A can of soda which contains approximately 9 teaspoons of sugar suppresses the immune system. Alcohol as well can put healthy immunity at risk, because alcohol in-

gestion deprives the body of protective nutrients, high doses of alcohol suppresses the availability of the white blood cells to multiply and it inhibits the action of natural killer cells. A healthy diet goes a long way in supporting immune function. Add exercise to your daily routine, especially if you have a high stress job. Aside from releasing tension, exercise helps the heart work harder, pumping blood more rapidly which will improve circulation sending more antibodies and white blood cells throughout the body to detect and destroy harmful bacteria or viruses. Lighten up…Laugh, have some fun. Laughter really is the best medicine. When you are gloom and doom it affects every part of you, even your immune system. It also can affect those around you. Several recent studies highlight the relationship between a heart healthy lifestyle and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. While more research still needs to be done, certain lifestyle choices, such as physical activity and diet, may help support brain health and prevent Alzheimer’s. These lifestyle changes have been shown to lower the risk of other diseases; such as heart disease and diabetes,

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? Are you chipper? Do you hop out of bed and get after your day? Or do you tap away at the snooze button on your alarm and then after a few (or more) rounds of this you begrudgingly drag your corpse like body out of bed? I imagine most of us are somewhere in the middle of those extremes, but from my observations we mostly lean to the less sleep, overly tired side of the spectrum. According to a 2013 Gallup poll, 40% of Americans get less sleep than needed. Moreover, the problem may be more than just the amount of sleep, but the quality of the sleep can be an issue too. Is your sleep interrupted by frequent waking, do you

many believe that going to bed and waking at the same time daily, teaches your body when to sleep and wake. It essentially puts you on a timer. This will improve your quality of sleep, but the catch is you have to do it daily meaning, even on weekends and holidays. 3) Watch what you eat and drink: eating too much or too little can affect sleep. The other obvious factors are caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. All three have been shown to mess with your sleep cycles. Most are surprised to hear alcohol, because of the idea of a nightcap, but it does affect our sleep. 4) Limit electronics an hour before bed: our eyes are sensitive to the blue lights of screens from tablets, phones, and television and they may interfere with sleep. Limiting your exposure the last hour (or two) before bed may help you sleep better. 5) Limit distractions: visual and sound distractions can negatively affect your sleep. Lights from your alarm clock, streetlights, or the little light on the DVD player can all disturb sleep. Likewise, the noise of a dripping faucet, the house creak-

toss and turn, etc. If we are sleeping poorly or if we are sleeping too little, we are bound to have some issues. Sleep is simply, very important. There lots of theories on what happens to us when we sleep. It is believed that it effects the health of our brain, our hormonal releases like growth hormone, it is when our body heals, and when our brain consolidates memory. These are all good things and well worth our time. On the flip side of the coin, lack of sleep can affect mood, concentration, weight gain, and there are even possible links to immune system suppression and heart disease (WebMD). Clearly, we need to avoid being a sleep deprived individual. There are many ways to improve sleep and get more of it, thus improving our overall wellness. 1) Make sleep a priority: This sounds basic, but sometimes we don’t sleep enough, simply because we don’t value sleep. We’d rather play on the computer, binge watch Netflix, or go out. These things can be okay, but regularly pushing off sleep will eventually catch up to us. 2) Sleep on a schedule:

The oxygen bleach will not harm any vegetation and it will clean off dirt, diesel soot, mold, mildew, algae and so forth, leaving the stucco sparkling clean. You can also use a pressure washer, but you need to be very careful around the cracks and where the stucco might end next to trim boards, windows and doors. You don’t want to pump in lots of water behind the stucco causing hidden damage. Once the stucco is clean and dry, you now know what you have to match with respect to color and texture. important. The biggest mistake I see most people make in these instances is failing to clean the stucco first. I realize that some people don’t want to ruin the patina that old stucco has attained with age. If this is the case, your job just becomes one or two steps harder because once you get the right mixture of the stucco repair mix, you’ll have to use small amounts of mortar pigments to get it to match the different colors of the adjacent stucco. If you decide to clean your stucco, you can use an oxygen bleach solution and a scrub brush to get great results. You might want to add some

DEAR PAT: Your project is the most difficult because the stucco is natural and has never been painted. I liken it to a tailor trying to repair a tear in fabric. No matter how skilled his stitching, you probably can see where he tried to mend the garment. The good news is there’s a good chance you can make a repair that will match the existing stucco, but it’s going to take some work and experimentation on your part. You’ll just fill the cracks only with the repair material, not allowing any of it to splatter or spread onto the existing stucco. This is very

DEAR TIM: I purchased an older stucco home that’s never been painted. It’s got some cracks in the stucco. Most range in width from 1/4 to 3/8inch wide. The cracks are not getting any bigger and a structural engineer said that all is well and the cracking will not continue. What’s the best way to repair them so you can’t see them once the work is complete? It seems an almost impossible task as every stucco house repair I’ve seen looks worse than the narrow crack. --Pat M., Dayton, Ohio

Obama’s speech, American UN Ambassador Samantha Power conceded the “current situation is dangerous.” She added, “Russia chooses the path of escalation and obfuscation, ” in its support of separatists fighting the Kiev government. Trade Policy - Regarding trade policy the President proclaimed, “China wants to write the rules for the world’s fastestgrowing region. That would put our workers and our business at a disadvantage… We should write those rules. We should level the playing field.” He then called for Congress to give him trade promotion authority for new trade deals with Asia and Europe “that aren’t just free, but are also fair.” There’s plenty room for bi-partisan compromise and support here. There was passing mention of the dangerous “maritime disputes” in the Asia/ Pacific region, but no reaffirmation of his Administration’s strategic Pacific pivot. Keystone - Yet when it came to the proposed KeystoneXL petroleum pipeline running from Canada to American Gulf ports, Obama’s condescension was glaring. In a rhetorical sideswipe and push for massive infrastructure spending, Obama declared, “let’s set our sights higher than a single pipeline.” The Administration’s political stalling and punting on the Keystone pipeline has been an irritant in U.S./Canadian relations and a loss for American construc-

tion jobs. Interestingly, according to the Neilson ratings, the speech drew the smallest TV audience for such an event in the past fifteen years. But key foreign policy issues lurk on the horizon; do we keep negotiating over Iran’s nuclear program while the clock ticks and Tehran’s mullahs stall for time; do we accept a new relationship with Cuba while forgetting the Castro brothers backstory; do we look to close Guantanamo prison for the political optics only to reap the whirlwind of former inmates returning to haunt us? The choice is America’s. The consequences could be global.

The trail is named for Loon’s founder, a former walking boss in the logging industry before he went on to become New Hampshire’s Governor Sherman Adams. The black diamond run on the far edge of the resort is my favorite, it is steep and then it becomes steeper before mellowing its grade at the middle of the run and ending at the Camp III log cabin lodge. Camp III, a past lumber camp location, is a great place to take a break and grab a bite, breakfast or lunch. On warm days the picnic tables on the deck are hot properties, but the only thing hot this day was the hot chocolate and Jamaica Jerk Chicken soup! Award winning snowmaker and Loon’s snowmaker manager, Ken Mack, leads a Loon snowmaking tour. We are inside the valve house located near the Tote Road Quad on Loon Peak; it is one of the sixteen valve houses on their three peaks. Over the last five years Loon has invested 3 million dollars to increase and improve their snowmaking abilities. New ultra-efficient snowmaking hydrants this season produce more snow with less energy. I had the opportunity to meet Loon Mountain’s snowmaking manager Ken Mack. Mack was recognized by the industry by winning the HKD’s

cated across Loon’s three peaks. The main water and air pumps are

located at the base of the mountain. New snow guns are becoming ultra-

efficient and are easier to start and regulate. New technology has allowed them to make a third more snow for a third less energy, which is environmentally friendly! According to Mack the ultimate snowmaking mix is dry air-low humidity, the temperature at10 degrees and warm water. Of course the temperature must be below freezing but if its warmer a smaller volume of snow can be produced. But here is the kick; colder temps cause the water to freeze where it shouldn’t such as in a pipe or at the end of the snow gun! We all know frozen pipes will break and so will a snow gun if its barrel is frozen shut. Warm water now makes sense because he doesn’t want it to freeze until it leaves the end of the See patenaude on 20

REAL WOOD FURNITURE

by Steve White Contributing Writer

Early America Indians learned the value of having purple martins in their village as a natural bug eliminator. Hollow gourds were hung near teepees in multiple locations to ward of the pesky insects. European settlers copied these methods by constructing wooden houses with multiple holes for maximum mosquito protection during the summer months. The clearing of farmland and rapid urbanization in the United States eliminated thousands of natural nesting sites which led to the decline in purple martin populations. Fifty years ago, J.L. Wade launched a program to educate the public about the benefit of providing purple martin houses in towns and cities to combat mosquitoes without the customary spraying that was standard in many metropolitan areas. The Nature Society was formed in Griggsville, Illinois which can now proclaim itself as the purple martin capital of the world. Martin migration starts from Brazil around late January, depending on which part of the Northern Continent you live in.

These Purple Martins are a fixture every year on the grounds of the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in The Weirs. They arrive every year around April 15th and leave around August 15th. Mature male birds, known as scouts, usually are the first to reach their proven breeding grounds from the previous year. Legend has it that these scouts determine the food supply and housing in an existing area and fly back to South America to guide the return of the flock. In reality, the first arrivals simply know the value of selecting the best nesting site for successful breeding purposes. Purple martins build nests from a collection of small twigs, pine needles, straw, leaves and mud. Adult females lay 5-6 eggs which usually hatch about 14 days later. Most of these babies fledge in approximately one month, quickly perfecting their famous flying and insectcatching skills. By late summer the purple martins will begin to congregate in staging areas near large bodies of water. Martins tend to drift southward each day and will eventually combine with other flocks that are also heading in that direction. Concentrations of up

to 100,000 birds have been recorded during this stage of migration. The purple martin is the only bird species east of the Rockies that depends almost exclusively on humans for its housing. Martins will nest in almost any properly designed housing, but the human must become a “landlord for a successful colony to become self-sufficient in the future. Evicting unwanted intruders and maintaining the property are essential for the martin’s survival. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, January 29, 2015 cail from 1

On a fateful Friday night in October of 1971 I attended the first ever Boston Braves home game. The Braves were hosting the Cleveland Barons. Very early on in the evening, I noticed that Bob Wilson, a broadcaster I already idolized, was high atop the ice surface in the WBZ broadcast booth. It was just Bob and just one other person in the booth. A gentleman that I assumed was there to take care of the technical aspects of the broadcast. I couldn’t wait to get home that night. My plan was to sit down and write a letter to Bob to volunteer my services to “assist” him in any way I could during his Braves broadcasts at the Garden. I had written a number of similar letters to other radio announcers prior to that time but in most cases I didn’t receive any response. Once in a while I would get a form letter of rejection. I wrote the letter on a Friday night and mailed it the following morning. That Monday afternoon I was in my backyard playing Wiffle Ball with some friends when my father came out on our back porch and told me I had a phone call. Before I picked up the phone he told me it was Bob Wilson. My father knew that I had written to Bob and mailed it a couple of days earlier. I thought for sure when he told me Bob Wilson was calling that it had to be a friend of the family’s pretending to be Bob. Well I was ready because I knew there’s no way anybody could pretend to have the amazing voice of Mr. Wilson. So I took the phone, said hello and I immediately knew it was no joke...it really was Bob Wilson. I was bracing myself for another rejection when he informed me that the next Boston Braves broadcast was to be that Friday night and he requested that I meet him at the Press Gate, sit with him in the booth and “see how things go”. I met Bob on Friday and after informing him that I was already planning to attend his alma mater, the Leland Powers School of

Radio, TV and theatre the following fall, he assigned me to keep his statistics for the night. It was a quantum leap in one week from being in the stands to sitting next to Bob Wilson in the ‘BZ broadcast booth. It was the thrill of a lifetime. Apparently, the “audition” went well. Bob credited me at the end of the broadcast as his statistician and then asked me to return for the next Braves game on WBZ. It was a volunteer position but it was the best education in the art of hockey broadcasting than anyone could possibly get. I learned from the best. Eventually, I would wind up keeping statistics for Bob during Braves and Bruins games at the Garden. This was during the days of hockey madness in the region..Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge... the list goes on and on. The AHL Braves averaged more than 11,000 fans in their first year in Boston, 1971-72. It was an amazing time to be a hockey fan and a hockey statistician in Boston. A little over a year after meeting Bob, I got a call from him one night. He told me of an opening for a “producer” at WBZ radio. I had only ever been in one small radio station before and he’s talking about being a producer at one of the largest and most powerful stations in the country. He told me to call the program director at WBZ the next morning, which I did trying to use as low a voice

as possible when I spoke with Bob Oakes...trying to sound older than 18. Mr. Oakes and I set up an interview and ultimately, I got the job. Thanks to Bob Wilson! He was always in my corner and was my true mentor. It’s ironic that almost 30 years to the day when I started working with Bob in the American Hockey League, I would start my 14-year run as the “voice” of the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs. I vividly recall one Sunday afternoon during the Monarchs’s first season,

2001-02. It was the second period of a game in which the Monarchs were getting blown out by the Worcester Ice Cats. I could feel a presence behind me but I couldn’t turn around since I was in the middle of my play by play. That presence was my mentor and the greatest hockey broadcaster ever, Bob Wilson. It was totally unexpected. Bob was attending with a church group from Gilford and stopped by the booth to say hello. I remember taking the headphones and microphone from my broadcast partner that day

and giving them to Bob so I could chat with him during that lopsided game. Never before or since have I been that nervous in my broadcasting career. My mentor, my idol, my inspiration for getting into hockey broadcasting was there beside me. I have no idea what my play by play was like during that 5-10 minute segment of that broadcast. As I recall, it wasn’t very good. Bob was wonderful! Reminiscing about the Braves, Bruins and some of the great times we had together. Meanwhile, I was a nervous wreck. Before leaving the booth and re-joining his group he told me in his trademark booming and rich voice that I was sounding great as I extended my sweaty right hand. Bob Wilson made a tremendous difference in my life and I know without his help and guidance I wouldn’t be doing what I love until this day and hopefully many more. I think of him every time when I open my Monarchs broadcasts with his signature, “Hi everybody and good evening to you...” OK, I know I’m stealing but at least I’m doing it from the best there ever was!

commentator for the Bruins’ radio broadcast and in 1967 he succeeded Jim Laing as the voice of the Bruins. Wilson was the voice of the Bruins for the next twenty-eight years (except for two years in St. Louis as the television sports director for KMOX). Wilson covered about 3,000 games with the Bruins, never missing one, including exhibitions, preseason and playoff games. He was the founder of the NHL Broadscasters’ Association and was voted “Best Radio Sports Play By Play” twice by Boston Magazine. Wilson was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto with the Foster

Hewitt Award, the Massachusetts Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame. The radio broadcast booth at TD Garden in Boston was named “The Bob Wilson Radio Booth” in his honor in 2011. Bruce Crowder, who played at forward for the Boston Bruins from 1981-82, who also owns a home in Gilford, recalled his memories of Wilson as he travelled with the team. “He was really a great guy,” said Crowder. “I knew him well. He was very easy to talk to and very knowledgeable. He took great pride in what he did. He was the one who called my first NHL

goal and I’m sure called my first penalty as well. I never realized that I lived right near him here in the area. I believe the last time I saw him was at the Bruins alumni game that took place at the Laconia Ice Arena a few years back. It really is a shame that he is gone. It’s a great loss.” Crowder’s son, Scott, is the organizer of the New England Pond Hockey Classic that is in its sixth year on Meredith Bay. Locally, Wilson was a well known and welcome figure in the area. His 26-foot Chris-Craft boat named “Big Mouth” was a familiar sight in the Lakes Region. Wilson and his wife Nancy were regulars at the Senior Bowling league at the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in the Weirs for the past fifteen years. Bob Lawton, founder and general manager of Funpsot, fondly recalled Bob Wilson. “He was really a great guy. He always had a smile for everyone. Even when his sight deterioraated later in life he still came in with Nancy to bowl.”

closely at the stucco, you will see many individual grains of sand. They’ll be different sizes and different colors. The same is true for older brick mortar. The sand makes up a majority of what you see. Much of the color of the stucco is derived from the blended color of the sand. Your job is to visit local sand and gravel quarries and try to locate sand that matches the sand in your stucco. The odds are great that you’ll find it. Purchase a five-gallon bucket for now so you can begin your testing. When your stucco was mixed, the mason used two ingredients, maybe three. He certainly used the sand and added Portland cement. Older masons also often added some hydrated lime to make the mixture bond better to the wall. The lime also adds an interesting characteristic in that in can help heal small hairline cracks that develop over time. What’s more, your stucco home looked a different color when it was first built. At that time, each of the sand particles had a thin coating on it of the Portland cement and possibly the lime if it was in the mix. Mother Nature wears this coating off over time, and then you start to see the actual color of the sand. This is why a tuckpointed brick joint stands out like a sore thumb in most cases. It’s monotone because all you see is the color of the cement paste. Your job is to try to locate a Portland cement that, once dry and cured, matches the color of the paste you now see in between the grains of your stucco sand. You may have to experiment mixing different amounts of Portland cement and hydrated lime to get the color you need. When mixing batches and allowing them to dry, don’t do this in direct sun. Keep the samples in the shade the entire time so they dry slowly. Keep them damp for at least a week. Once you feel you have

the correct proportions of Portland cement and lime to get the right color, make up a test batch of stucco. I’d generally mix two parts sand to one part Portland cement/lime blend. You may find that a mix of three parts sand to one part Portland cement is what best matches your stucco. Once mixed, trowel this onto a small piece of cement board that’s about one foot by one foot. Put the mixture on about 1/4inch thick. Try to match the texture of your stucco using brushes, trowel strokes, etc. Once it sets up, keep it damp for a week. Keep the sample in your garage out of the sun for a month. At the end of the month, mix up a solution of muriatic acid and water, one part acid to 10 parts water. Put on old clothes, rubber gloves, goggles, etc. as this acid mixture is dangerous. Slightly dampen your sample stucco with water then brush on some of the acid solution. Start to scrub it with an old scrub brush. You’re trying to wash off the cement paste from the stucco to reveal the colored sand. Rinse and allow to dry. Take the small panel out to your stucco and see how well you did to match what you have. If you’re not close, keep experimenting until you get the right proportions of ingredients. When you do, just clean out the cracks, mist them with water right before filling them and do all the work on cooler overcast days. After 60 days then carefully scrub off the cement paste from the stucco mix in the cracks with a toothbrush using the acid solution. Do not allow the acid solution to touch the existing stucco. ment testing? We have heard yes – we have heard no. Perhaps someone can enlighten us at the NHDOE? 3.Whatever happened to LOCAL CONTROL in education in NH? Does the NHDOE know how to teach our children better or understand their individual needs more than the teachers in our local community schools? Now, these are just a few of the many questions. But, Thomas Raffio, Chair of the NH State Board of Education (also, CEO of Northeast Delta Dental) testified at the SB 101 hearing. Here is some of what he shared with the Senate committee: “…I have to say, I really don’t understand this bill. In 2010, when the SBOE endorsed the Common Core State Standards, we were essentially recommending them… (Really? I remember this quite differently. Things like “… schools would lose funding” if they did not implement and such. Hmmm…). “We knew they were good.” (How did you know? WHERE were these standards tested?) “The department had worked on them for years with other states.” (First I have heard of this. Very interesting

information. More details, please?) “Hundreds of our own teachers helped write them.” (Weren’t these standards handed to us from a governmental agency known as the National Governors Association?) In his comments, Chair Raffio goes on to say “the Union Leader quoted a little girl in one of our districts jumping up to say, ‘Our brains are on fire’.” Now this is a statement I can agree with, as this what happens when you teach to a “test”. My brain sometimes feels this way, too. Parents need to stand up and say NO to Common Core. We need to say NO the Smarter Balance Assessments. As NH taxpayers, we should all demand Common Core go back to the pit from whence it came. We should leave the teaching of our youth to the teachers who know our children the best. Individualized instruction can lead to a life-long love of learning. Cramming facts onto a test sheet – well, not so much. You can locate your senators/representatives at www.gencourt. state.nh.us. All contact info is listed on this site. Give your public servants a call and let them know you DO NOT want Common Core in NH! I dare you…

law-enforcement duties that elected officials openly declare they are not going to carry out. To many in the media, the only question seems to be whether we are going to be “mean-spirited” toward people who want to come here -- especially children who were brought here, or sent here, “through no fault of their own.” It is as if those children had some pre-existing right to be in the United States, which they could lose only if they did something bad themselves. But those children had no more right to be here than children in India, Africa or other places with millions of children living in poverty. Surely we can think ahead enough to realize that children living in this country illegally are going to grow up and have children of their own, with cultures and values of their own -- and ethnic “leaders” to promote discontent and hostility if they don’t get as good results as people who have the prevailing American culture, beginning with the English language. You can’t wish that away by saying the magic word “diversity” -- not after we have seen what “diversity” has led to in Europe.

NAACP office is located on the opposite side of the building. Internet sleuth Jonathan Langdale, a former U.S. Air Force image analyst, and former NYPD officer and online security expert John Cardillo noted that Google Earth images of the building taken last fall showed dark marks in the exact same spot. “A preliminary analysis of the Google Earth image side by side with the alleged damage seems to reveal similar scorching on the same area of the building months before the alleged hate crime,” Cardillo reported. “There was as much opportunity to hit the NAACP side of the building, but only (the) barber shop side was affected,” he pointed out. Cardillo’s Colorado law enforcement sources told him that “the Feds are in a bind because there isn’t much pointing to a verifiable hate crime,” but “politics” is the “driving force.” President Obama’s FBI has disseminated a sketch of a “person of interest” described as “white,” “balding” and “in his 40s.” But sunglasses obscure his eyes. just as easily be a lightskinned Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander -- or, as many acerbic critics of the poorly drawn sketch observed, a chubby gray alien from outer space. I asked local law enforcement sources to tell me more about the witness or witnesses who identified the Bald Specter. But all questions are being referred to the FBI, which did not return my call by deadline. There is also a futileseeming hunt for a white pickup truck allegedly driven by the Bald Specter. But I’ve driven through the neighborhood where the barbershop and NAACP office are located. Every other vehicle in the area is a pickup. And as blogger and citizen journalist Bill O’Keefe observed, another Google street view image of the premises taken last fall shows a white pickup matching the FBI description sitting in the parking lot on the NAACP side of the building. One key witness who spoke to a local news station described the white pickup as a “new truck.” The FBI description says it was a “dirty” “older model.” Which is it? I’m reminded of the Keystone Kops witch-hunt for the nonexistent crazed white militants in a nonexistent white box truck during the Beltway sniper attacks in 2002. These are all things that make you go “hmmm,” not things that justify kneejerk and unsubstantiated cries of “RAAAACISM!” Something certainly happened at 603 South El Paso Street in Colorado Springs on the first Monday after New Year’s. But what exactly occurred and why are as wide open as the Colorado sky. Michelle Malkin is the author of “Culture of Corruption: Obama and his Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks and Cronies” (Regnery 2010).
