Last week we wrote about the capture of 36 Union soldiers from New Hampshire who were doing picket duty at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia during the Civil War. Those soldiers were taken captive by Confederate soldiers and marched to Libby Prison in November of 1864 and two of them, Albert Bacheler of New Hampton and Benjamin Thompson of Wolfeboro of the 12th New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment were able to escape from the prison about a
month after their capture. Bacheler later would give an account of their adventures after the escape for the history account of the 12th New Hampshire Regiment.
After traveling at night and finding refuge for a couple of days with the help of slaves the two escapees from Libby Prison set out before dark after rising from the cornstalks they were hiding under, and after an hour’s walk they suddenly found themselves at the junction of three roads. There was a small stream with a working mill at that location and men at work, but there See SMITH on 18

Coat worn by Albert Bacheler, given to him by slaves somewhere along the escape route he maneuvered along with Benjamin Thompson, is still on display at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts. A restoration project led by twin boys, 11 year old George and Charles King, from Gloucester in 2016 helped to save the coat from destruction.

The Next Twelve Years
To The Editor:
I’m sure you studied American History in grade school. Do you recall how much attention was given to the leadup to the American Revolution, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the battles of the Revolutionary War, and then the following years it took for the thirteen colonies to gel into a newborn nation?
Twelve years passed between the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the ratification of the US Constitution. This is perhaps the most important part of US history.
I predict the next twelve years will rival those epic years. Why do I think this?
President Trump has broken the mold of decades of Establishment and one-party politicians who have ascended to the presidency. The ever-growing Federal government is going to become smaller in size thanks to the new Department of Government Efficiency.
Tell the truth, would you have ever thought you’d hear the phrase External Revenue Service? Get ready for a second shock because it’s possible you and I will be released from income tax slavery in the next four years.
Past administrations, both Democrat and Republican have slowly taken away your rights, your culture, your money, and your pursuit of happiness. The news media and past administrations have become expert magicians executing sleight of
hand to mask what they’re doing behind the scenes. You, like the rest of us, have been swirling around in a vortex of fear and uncertainty for years.
All of that ended on January 20, 2025, when President Trump was sworn into office. Your rights are being restored. Trump is eradicating the woke and DEI insanity that was destroying the tough American culture. Soon inflation will ebb. Hope is blossoming all around us as lilac buds erupt on warm spring days.
I predict President Trump will make bold announcements each week to bolster this hope. Trump is going to reveal the truth about so many things.
If you suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, I feel Mark Twain’s long-ago quote applies to you at this point in time: “What gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so.”
Your news sources have filled you with lies and falsehoods. You’re about to be showered with the truth about so many things.
Will you be able to handle the truth? Do you think you’re going to enjoy winning each and every day?
I know I can!

Lifesaver For Liberty
To The Editor
President Trump’s victory has tossed our nations’ U.S.A. Ship
of State a lifesaver. Living up to the MAGA expectations will be a difficult task to turn the ship around and promises to be equivalent to threading a needle without an eye. So how do we get to shore?
As the war against globalism gets hotter, American patriots would do well to take up arms of truth with the ultimate weapon God provides in Ephesians 6:1018. God tells us our struggle is not against flesh and blood…it’s against the powers of darkness and we need to put on the whole armor of God. We need the supernatural power of God to help overcome what William Butler Yeats called in his poem, The Second Coming: “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” It is tragic that the “the worst” has won the battles thus far. Human life has been devalued with abortion for convenience and profit and even selling body parts; infanticide; euthanasia in several states; LBGTQ+; exploiting children, not of age and sometimes without parental consent, selling the lie that mutilating irreversible surgery will change them to the sex they desire.
Use the lifesaver to restore Biblical Judaeo/Christian wisdom as the backbone of our liberty. Only with a widespread force for righteousness and justice will we be able to look back at the second term of President Trump and say that the necessity for his second term to far surpass his first term MAGA See MAILBOAT on 21

cooL day at raggEd
Kris invited me to join her and her friends at Ragged last Thursday. The forecast said It was the last day of the Arctic Blast.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Everyone can have fun outside when it’s cold if they are wearing the right clothing.
I went to the ticket office to redeem my Indy Pass and activate my rfid card/lift ticket. This was my first visit to Ragged Mountain this season. I right away noticed the new patio in front of the lodge. Getting in and out of the lodge is better and on the far end there is a fire pit and chairs. Slopeside there is a retaining wall with stairs leading up to the snow and the equipment racks. Hurray, no more slippery slope and it looks really nice.
It was about ten degrees and the sun was hidden behind high gray clouds. I was happy to get into the warm lodge to put on my warm clothing. Kris and our friends were already there so I had to hustle.
To fight the cold I put on my dry wool socks, I pulled on my insulated ski pants over my fleece lined pants. I wore a merino wool quarter zip turtleneck underneath a bear print fleece pullover and I covered it all with my insulated ski jacket. I pulled on my Balaclava that covered my head and face and then I pulled my fleece neck gaiter over my head. I

did i rEaLLy do that?
by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor
It’s not a big secret which way the Weirs Times leans when it comes to politics. In fact, it’s not even a lean, it’s a full bend to the right. With that, being the editor, I am used to all the barbs and attacks that come my way from those of a different political persuasion who, in the depths of their own weird thinking, are convinced that their “lean” is not a lean at all but the way the world is meant to be and to have a difference of opinion to that is pure madness.
I, on the other hand, am civilized enough to realize that there will always be those on the left as well as the right and it is important to listen to opinions that differ than mine and make reasonable conclusions.
So, after much debate and contemplation, I have some to realize that those who think differently than myself about politics are not mad, they are just nutty.
Just kidding…a few aren’t. Well, at least I tried to be open minded. (I can hear the keyboards clacking and the pens scribbling as I write this.)
Along with all of this political vitriol comes the dangers of social media where one like myself needs to be ever vigilant of what I say in public or even my actions. Any single movement can be magnified and manipulated so as to make something that takes place over a few seconds be taken as something that it is not at all as it appears. Any words I might say can be also completely taken out of context to make it appear I am saying something I did not.
That is the way of the world nowadays and, unfortunately, way too many folks take these
manipulated words and actions as the truth since they don’t have the time to actually investigate since they need to quickly move on to the next manipulated post that lines up with their thinking.
For a recent example.
The day after our most recent presidential election I was out at the supermarket picking up some pasta. I wasn’t really paying attention to my surroundings as I was a little tired after following the results the night before. I was switching back and forth between the news channels to see if our new president was going be someone who was going to lift us out of the economic mess of the last four years, or one who was gong to be the worst dictator since the world began. (Of course, they were both Donald Trump, depending on which station you watched.)
I did not know at the time that an unhappy reader of the Weirs Times was in the same aisle as me and filming my every move.
At one point I reached into my shirt pocket for my shopping list and as I put it back, I then began to reach up to the very top shelf for some Rigatoni I needed which was a few inches back on the shelf. (I never realized Rigatoni was in such demand.) I stuck on out my fingers to move the product closer with my fingertips and just as I touched the box of pasta, I felt an overwhelming need to sneeze and did so.
“Achoo,” I blustered. I thought nothing of it.
It wasn’t until I got home that I was made aware of a video circulating around the Internet which showed me as my hand left my shirt pocket and then reached with my fingertips as the sneeze left my lips.
The video was titled: “Weirs Times Editor Gives Nazi Salute
While Yelling ‘Achtung” in Pasta Aisle at Supermarket.”
It seemed as it was only a matter of minutes until social media was flooded with the news and crazy headlines.
“Has Weirs Times Editor Secretly Been A Member Of The Nazi Party For Years?”
“Far Left Liberal Professor Who Studied Nazis Once And Also Writes About Conservatives Who He Thinks Are Nazis Verifies Smith’s Nazi Salute As The Real Thing And That His Research Also Concluded That Hitler Sympathizers Prefer Rigatoni.”
Even the local TV media chimed in, but were very careful. As they showed the video the caption underneath read: “Nazi Salute Or Not? You Decide.” (They were being careful since a popular pasta company also advertised,)
There have been some groups trying to help me debunk this nonsense since. In fact, one social media outlet tracked down a lady who was also shopping in that pasta aisle and swore that I had only sneezed, but she quickly recanted her story after a story appeared online about how in 2018 she may have once went through the 12 items or less checkout with 15 items. She decided to recant her story to save her and her family from further embarrassment.
I would imagine that there are some of you reading this who might be questioning if any of this is actually true.
Of course, I did just make the whole thing up, but just the fact that I wrote this column can be just enough to lead to it being considered real by those who want it to be.
After all, as Jonathan Swift once wrote: “You cannot reason a person out of a position he did not reason himself into in the first place.”
It’s a nutty world, be careful out there.

President Donald Trump is now officially the 47th president of the United States. Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 was marred by violence from the left; it was also surreal. The media were utterly shocked by Trump’s victory -- Trump himself seemed shocked, too -- and that disbelief translated into four years of extraordinary efforts to deny that Trump had indeed won, ranging from attacks on social media companies to blaming Russian collusion. Not so this time.
I was in Washington, D.C., for the inauguration. The streets were calm -- and, despite the freezing tempera-
tures, filled with Trump supporters. There was no violence. In fact, a sense of quiescence pervaded the town, a recognition that not only had Trump won, but that he had won convincingly.
This makes perfect sense.
As the first president to serve non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland, Trump doesn’t represent something new, something that the American public must digest. He represents something tried and true. Usually, American politics tends to follow a near-Hegelian map: thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Jimmy Carter (far left) is followed by Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush (conservative), and the American public finally settle on Bill Clinton (the fabled “third way”). The Harding/Coolidge era (conservative) is followed by the
“Sustainability” investments became popular a few years back. So-called experts said companies shouldn’t just focus on profit. They should put more effort into being “nice.”
Funds pushing ESG (environmental, social and governance) were all the rage.
Giant investment firms like BlackRock pressured companies to hire more women and minorities.
CEO Larry Fink announced, “All investments are going to be looked through sustainability.”
But “sustainability” is a mostly meaningless word.
Parnassus claimed it helped meet
UN sustainability goals of “nutrition” and “sanitation” by investing in U.S. Foods and Clorox.
Starbucks phased out plastic straws while adding lids that used more plastic.
BP rebranded itself as “Beyond Petroleum.” Wisely, it mostly invested in petroleum.
Former Vice President Al Gore made money peddling climate change hysteria. He created “sustainability investment funds,” claiming “sustainability factors ... actually enhance returns!”
His funds did enhance Gore’s own returns; he made millions. But over the past three years, his “sustainable” fund underperformed the stock market. Recently the fund managers admitted they “made investment mistakes.”

Already close and cordial India/U.S. political ties surged in the early hours of the new Trump Administration. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was honored with rare front row seating at the Inauguration of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the Washington ceremony.
The guest from India commented, “It was very clear that the Trump Administration’s keen to have India present at the inauguration itself. They’re clearly prioritizing the bilateral relationship.” Minis-
ter Jaishankar added, “They would like to build on the foundation of the relationship, a foundation which the first Trump administration also contributed a lot to building.”
Significantly, the very first bilateral (two way) meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio was with Minister Jaishankar as part of a wider gathering of the IndoPacific QUAD security grouping. This encounter marked Secretary Rubio’s first two-way meeting since assuming office. The consultations formed part of a wider diplomatic effort to support the QUAD; the grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the United States which focuses on maritime, economic, supply-chain security.
Japanese Foreign Minister
Takeshi Iwaya and the Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, were both in Washington for the Inauguration and the Quad conference as well.
Contrary to misperceptions, the QUAD group is not an Asian NATO nor a formal military alliance; yet the group comprising four leading maritime democracies in the IndoPacific, serves as a maritime counter-balance to Communist China especially in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea.
The QUAD joint Statement following the meeting, “reaffirm our shared commitment to strengthening a Free and Open Indo-Pacific where the rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity are upheld and defended.”
The four member group statement
added, “We also strongly oppose any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion…We are committed to strengthening regional maritime, economic, and technology security in the face of increasing threats, as well as promoting reliable and resilient supply chains.”
China while clearly discussed at the Washington confab was not specifically mentioned in the formal Statement. Nonetheless Japan’s Iwaya told the press that ‘it was very meaningful” that Secretary Rubio’s first meeting was a Quad gathering and that the first joint statement of the new U.S. administration was released by the four countries. QUESTION
What Do You Think About The Recent Vote On Post Birth Abortion?
Letters From God Letters From God
Do you know that I grieve? I am your creator God who brought you into existence in order for you to experience life. I live in an environment of life that is devoid of death. It is nonexistent. Watching you, my creation, give yourself over to death grieves me that I ever made you (Genesis 6:6). I had to give you free will in order to give you the perso nal right to choose or reject me. If I hadn’t, and made you machines which forced you to love me, it wouldn’t be love, but merely a response to impulses planted with you. You would be nothing more than robots. What you have done with that choice, however, is create a “culture of death” instead of life. This is never more apparent than your laws and practices regarding the lives of the unborn. Your question is in regard to your federal lawmakers, recently voting on the rights of children who survive an attempted abortion, to be treated as you would want to be treated and which is guaranteed by your Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and Constitution. That is, that they enjoy the right to “LIFE, Liberty and to the pursuit of happiness,” as their “inalienable right,” as it is for every individual in your country. In that vote, in your House of Representatives, on the Abortion Survivors Protection Act, all but 1 Democrat, 210, voted against this bill which
required medical care for babies born alive after a failed attempted abortion. Think of the barbaric nature of this. These children are no longer within the womb, where your “laws of death” have already bestowed the right to take the lives of babies, with the rationalization that they are not yet human. But now that they are outside the womb, many lawmakers want to allow progenitors to take the lives of these babies with impunity, even after they survive an attempted abortion. This vote reveals that the previous decision to allow abortions while in the womb, because they determine by human fiat, not my divine word, that they are not yet “human,” is merely a rationalization to give people the right to terminate a pregnancy for any personal reason at all. If lawmakers were consistent, they would all defend the right of the now born child, to have full human inalienable rights because they are clearly human outside the womb. Fortunately, for future children born, the bill passed 220-210, despite all of the “nay” votes that came only from Democrats. Only 1 Democrat voted for the bill. All of the remaining votes, 220, were made by Republicans and were enough to secure the bill and the rights of even “the born children.”
You must see that there is a “culture of death” that is becoming pervasive in your country. So much so, that the decision of the right for “life” for all, based on your original founding and Godly principles, is being eroded and aborted. These rights
extended even to babies inside the womb, who are growing and in a process of being viable and self-sustaining, and who are already human, for I myself am creating them (Psalm 139:1316). How much more do these rights pertain to those outside the womb? These rights are being terminated by those who do not fear me, my desires and my design for life and who are seeking to impose their “culture of death.” I know and you know, that not all who call themselves Democrats are godless. Nor are all who call themselves Republicans godly. But, as I have spoken over and over again in past letters, so many of the Democrats have made clear and obvious decisions to forsake me and my will and create their own, even as they demonstrated in this vote. This has been evident in the past with attempts to vote me, God, and support of my chosen people, Israel, and Jerusalem as their capital, off their platform as they tried in their national convention in 2012. It was also clear in the accusations of Democratic politicians running for office accusing non-democratic voters of being a “basket of deplorables,” or people in small towns who are “bitter” and “cling to guns or religion.” Most recently, Kamala Harris, who as a candidate for the highest office in the land, president of the United States, said in essence, I, God, and my will are not welcome in her party. When an attendee in a rally she was speaking at, shouted “Jesus is Lord” she responded by saying “you
guys are at the wrong rally,” and “I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street,” referring to former and now President Donald Trump, and the Republican party. Interestingly, just before they shouted, “Jesus is Lord,” when Kamala was touting her support for abortion, they also shouted “abortion is the sacrament of Satan.”
Listen carefully, there is another “spirit” among you besides my Holy Spirit. Just as real as I am, so is an angelic being I created, who also rebelled against me, named Satan. He deceived your first parents into self-deification and self-will so that they disobeyed my will. Immediately thereafter death entered into their lives and that of all who descended from them (Genesis chapter 3). Satan is, therefore, the author of death, and my son Jesus, as Lord who died and was raised “to destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil.” (Hebrews 2:14). If at any time anyone, any leaders, any government or nation abandons me, they will inevitably welcome back the author of death and inevitably suffer the consequences.
If you would have my blessings of “life,” follow those who follow me and stop the barbaric practice of ending life that I ordained and designed to be formed in a woman’s womb and outside of it.
I love you, God

BIRDS For The
New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats
by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer
If it weren’t for the American robin running away with the Bird of Winter title, the dark-eyed junco would be a serious contender.
The Bird of Winter is my very unofficial contest for the bird species seen in unusually high numbers during the winter. As I wrote a few weeks ago, the American robin is far and away the leader this winter, and I continue to see great numbers of robins nearly everywhere I go these days.
The dark-eyed junco, which has won the Bird of Winter title in years past, is making a strong case for honorable mention this year. I see them in my yard, at work, on my walks and all along the roadsides.
The other day, when it was three degrees when I arrived at work in the morning, I spread some sunflower seeds on the ground at the far end of the parking lot in direct line of sight from my office window. Beyond the parking lot is a large swath of woods where all sorts of New England birds can be seen. It’s a great view. That is until someone parks right in front of my window. Then I look out onto the grill of a Subaru or Jeep for the rest of the day.
Within minutes of throwing down the seed, birds started com-
ing to the spot. They were mostly juncos. In fact, by my count, of the 20 birds that arrived almost immediately, 18 of them were juncos. The other two were white-throated sparrows. Throughout the day, cardinals, blue jays, song sparrows and even eight wild turkeys showed up. Although they may not look the part, juncos are sparrows. Males are conspicuous with black or dark gray bodies, white bellies and pink bills. Females and immatures have a similar pattern but are lighter gray or brownish. Juncos are easily identifiable when they scatter away from roadsides by their white outer tail feathers. Juncos are common feeder birds but are most often found under the feeders picking up seeds off the ground. They are yearround residents in New England, although in southern New Eng -
land, they are typically seen only in the winter. Some migrate as far as the Carolinas and Georgia.
The dark-eyed junco consists of six (or more, depending on which source you read) forms or subspecies, which formerly were considered separate species. The only one that occurs regularly in New England is the slatecolored junco. If you see a junco in New England, it is correct to call it either a dark-eyed junco or a slate-colored junco. The other forms are found mostly out west, although the dark-eyed junco is widespread and common throughout North America.
I was surprised when I learned that juncos build their nests on the ground, most often under shrubs or otherwise well hidden. Then again, I’m always surprised when I hear of a small bird that builds its nest on the

ground. With so many predators lurking in the woods and suburbia, you’d think a nest above ground would be safer, but I have faith that these birds know what they are doing.
As I observed at work the other day, juncos are often seen in the winter with other sparrows, most often whitethroated sparrows. I see them fairly often with song sparrows as well. Although juncos are seen on the ground most of the time, it is not uncommon to see them in trees as well. I’m often surprised to see juncos through my binoculars when I’m looking to identify a bird I spot in a tree. I guess I’m accustomed to seeing them on the ground.
It’s not shocking that juncos would be a candidate for the Bird of Winter. They are one of the more common birds seen throughout the country, with an estimated population of 200 million to 600 million. That’s a wide range, as getting an accurate count of such a common bird is a tough, if not impossible, task. Wherever the real number falls, I’m glad it’s a high number. Juncos never fail to brighten up even the grayest of days.

DEAR DR. ROACH:
You recently wrote that you do not recommend probiotics in healthy people. I am a 78-year-old male who, three years ago,
underwent an esophagectomy to remove my esophagus and part of my stomach because of cancer. I was put on 30 mg of pantoprazole, which was later increased to 40 mg. I’ve read that prolonged use of this medicine isn’t recommended. My understanding is that this medicine is used to reduce the chance of acid reflux. I have read that it also kills bacteria (both bad and good) in the stomach. I asked my
primary care physician about this and whether she was OK with me starting probiotics to help restore the good bacteria. -E.M.
ANSWER: Protonpump inhibitors like pantoprazole are often used in people after surgical treatment for esophageal cancer. They reduce acid reflux and consequently prevent a stricture where the remainder of the esophagus meets the remainder of your stomach.
While it is true that proton-pump inhibitors do have the potential for side effects with long-term use, there are times when the benefits outweigh the risks. Many esophageal cancer experts feel that the benefits outweigh the risks in esophageal survivors like you.
Long-term acid suppression does lead to changes in the gut bacteria, called the microbiome. Using probiotics to improve the quality of the mi -

crobiome has been studied, and preliminary studies showed that taking probiotics daily can get more healthy bacteria in the gut. What isn’t clear is whether this translates to better outcomes for the patient or whether any of the long-term adverse effects of proton-pump-inhibitor therapy will be reduced. It makes sense that it might help, but it is unproven as yet. There is the potential for harm in probiotic treatment, but it’s not common. A very few cases of infection have been shown to be transmitted by probiotics. The main harm is mostly financial, since some probiotics are expensive.

DEAR DR. ROACH:
I am 81 years old and in pretty good health. I often have a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. A couple of months ago, I was dealing with a sore lower back from overdoing yard work, so I took two ibuprofen tablets before going to bed for several nights in a row. What I noticed is that I was able to get to sleep quicker. I have continued to take ibuprofen as a sleep aid, and it continues to help me get to sleep. But I am wondering if there might be any medical issue that could arise from the continued daily use of ibuprofen. -- J.T.N.

As Valentine’s Day approaches let’s take a moment to celebrate one of the most profound, yet often overlooked, contributors to physical wellbeing: a healthy romantic relationship. Research has consistently shown that the emotional support, companionship, and intimacy found in a good relationship can translate into tangible physical health benefits. Whether through reduced stress, improved heart health, or a strengthened immune system, the connection between love and health is both profound and scientifically backed.
Stress, often dubbed the “silent killer,” is a major contributor to chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Humans are inherently social creatures, and romantic relationships provide one of the most significant sources of social support. Close relationships activate the brain’s reward systems, releasing oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins— “feel good” hormones and neurotransmitters associated with pleasure, bonding, and stress reduction. Conversely, cortisol, the primary

stress hormone, can wreak havoc on the body when chronically elevated, leading to inflammation and impaired immune function. A 2016 study in Psychosomatic Medicine found that individuals in supportive relationships had lower cortisol levels compared to those in stressful or conflict-
ridden relationships. One of the most compelling areas of research lies in the impact of healthy romantic relationships on cardiovascular health. A 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that happily married individuals had a 14% lower risk of develop-
ing cardiovascular disease compared to their unmarried or unhappily married counterparts. This correlation is attributed to both emotional and behavioral factors. Emotionally, a healthy relationship can provide a buffer against the physiological effects of stress, which is known to increase blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Behaviorally, couples often encourage each other to

adopt healthier lifestyles, such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious meals, and quitting smoking. Even our immune system, our body’s self-defense against illness, can benefit from love. Studies suggest that individuals in stable, loving relationships are less likely to suffer from colds, flu, and other infections. The stress-buffering effects of a supportive partner can lower inflammatory markers, which are known to suppress immune function when elevated. Moreover, physical intimacy itself has immune-boosting properties. Regular physical affection, including hugging and kissing, has been shown to increase levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that plays a crucial role in the immune response. A 2015 study in Psychology & Health reported that couples who shared frequent physical affection had
higher IgA levels than those who did not. Further, a healthy romantic relationship can serve as a powerful safeguard for mental well-being. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness—conditions that can lead to poor physical health— are significantly less prevalent among individuals in fulfilling relationships. For instance, a 2020 metaanalysis in Clinical Psychological Science found that people in supportive relationships were 50% less likely to experience clinical depression compared to those who were single or in toxic relationships. This reduction in mental health issues has a direct impact on physical health, as chronic stress and depression are associated with conditions like gastrointestinal disorders, weakened immunity, and even cancer. Not all relationships are created equal, and the health benefits are contingent on the

quality of the relationship. Toxic or abusive relationships can have the opposite effect, increasing stress levels and leading to adverse health outcomes. A 2017 study in Health Psychology revealed that frequent conflicts in romantic relationships were associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers and a greater risk of chronic illness. Healthy communication and effective conflict resolution are critical. Couples who practice active listening, express empathy, and work collaboratively to resolve disagreements are more likely to experience the health benefits of their relationship. Good communication fosters trust and reduces stress, creating an environment conducive to physical and emotional well-being.
Practical Tips for a Healthier Relationship—and Body
1. Prioritize Quality Time: Spending
ing its quality, you’re not only investing in your partner but also in your own health and longevity. Prioritize your romantic relationship, not just during the Valentine’s Day season, but throughout the entire year—because love truly is good medicine!

3. Stay Physically Intimate: Physical touch, including holding hands, hugging, and kissing, releases oxytocin and other “feel good” hormones that promote relaxation and immune health.
4. Encourage Healthy Habits: Support each other in maintaining a healthy lifestyle by setting goals together, whether it’s exercising, eating better, or managing stress.
5. Communicate Effectively: Address conflicts constructively and openly. Seek therapy if needed to improve communication skills and resolve deeper issues. From boosting heart health and immunity to reducing stress and fostering mental wellbeing, the benefits of love extend far beyond the emotional realm. Indeed in a separate encounter with Secretary Rubio a Japanese Foreign Ministry statement added, “The two Ministers concurred to advance cooperation to further strengthen Japan-U.S. Alliance deterrence and response capabilities.”
Japan also wished to strengthen security ties with regional states such as South Korea and the Philippines.
But back to India. What’s often called the world’s largest democracy, India’s post-
independence political scene has fortunately avoided the tumultuous times facing neighbor Pakistan or much of South Asia for that matter. India celebrated its Republic Day, the 75th Anniversary of its Constitution, a democratic and largely secular document uniting an overwhelmingly Hindu but still multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic nation-state.
India /US political ties have improved dramatically in the past 25 years reflecting the bi-partisan approach in Washington towards what has
emerged as a key political, diplomatic and commercial partner. Contrary to popular myth, India does not have formal military ties with Washington but has a close working relationship as seen in the QUAD.
Just look at economic links. During 2023, two-way India/U.S. trade reached $124 billion. The American trade deficit with India was $43 billion. But to illustrate how commercial ties have grown, a decade ago in 2013, the two-way trade with India stood at $64 billion. Then the deficit in New Delhi’s favor was $20 bil-
lion; it doubled in a decade.
As a matter of comparison, 2023 bilateral trade with China reached $574 billion with a $279 billion trade deficit favoring Beijing!
India joins the list of Top Ten U.S. trade partners. Yet given the glaring deficit, shall President Trump focus on possibly using trade tariffs on India despite the close political ties with the Modi government? During the first Trump term, the U.S. slapped higher tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum products, prompting India to counter with tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods.
India’s Economic growth remains impressive slated at 6.8 percent for 2024, a strong number in a region of lackluster growth.
American diplomats are busy trying to arrange a February meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump in Washington to help “seal the deal” for future ties.

ple don’t find that ibuprofen helps or hurts their sleep, so I don’t recommend it as a sleep aid in general. In fact, some people find that ibuprofen can be disruptive to their sleep. Others, however, find that it makes them sleepy. In any case, the risk of two ibuprofen tablets at night, or even every day, is small. A person with a history of ulcer disease or abnormal bleeding shouldn’t take ibuprofen daily without discussing it with their doctor.

Lori led us down her favorite trail, Newfound Ridge down to Maine.
The nice thing about a week of cold weather is
that the snow doesn’t transform and the snow stays wonderful packed powder. The smooth soft snow surface made it easy to make big or quick perfect turns.
Ragged has 17 glades, over 250 acres but sadly the ropes were up keep-
ing them closed. I guess we all are waiting for just a little more snow so they can open. I hope they open soon because they are a ton of fun.
Some of the closed trails had piles of man made snow. The cold weather had been good

Weekdays are usually not busy and not surprisingly cold weekday mornings have less people showing up. It was a pretty quiet morning and we loved it. Most often we had wide open

The five of us skied over to the Spear Mountain Express Quad.

was also a company of Confederate cavalry at that junction of roads who were cooking their supper.
Being close to the men and near the mill, and realizing that they had been seen, the two men quickly decided that they should not run, and Ben told his companion to follow him as he approached the cavalry, instructing Albert to let him, Ben, do the talking. He boldly approached the “enemy,” and told them that he and his friend were officers in the 11th Virginia Infantry and were going as spies “to find out what progress the Yankees were making on the Dutch Gap canal.”
The officer in charge of the Confederate soldiers asked Ben if he knew Captain Polk of the Virginia 11th. Ben replied, “ Well I reckon, he belongs to my mess.
I left him only a day or two ago.” There was some truth in his reply because they had met Captain Polk after they had been captured by the Confederate troops.
Thompson and Bacheler were then invited to join the cavalry for supper, an invitation they accepted before continuing on their journey with wishes for their success from their new “friends.” As soon as they were out of sight of the Confederate soldiers the two Union soldiers took to the woods and quickly walked a mile or more before slowing down. As night came on the Libby escapees came to the location of the battle of Cold Harbor where on the third of June of that year the NH 12th had its numbers cut in half.
At two o’clock in the morning they stopped at another cabin which was the residence of African Americans and

they stayed there in the loft during the daylight hours, and early in the evening continued their trek to find friendly troops, but this time they walked along the road rather than through the woods.
It was about 3:00 a.m. when they were drawing close to the Bottoms bridge which crossed over the Chickahominy River, and they were startled to see a camp-fire burning not far from the end of the bridge. They observed a sentry standing near the fire and some horses that appeared to be saddled and ready for riders. Taking refuge in a thicket beside the road the two escaped prisoners engaged in a whispered discussion to plan their next more.
at the scene around the camp fire and found that there were six soldiers lying on the ground under blankets.
They could change plans and take an alternative route to find Union troops which they thought would generally be more risky, or they could try to cross the bridge without being seen and continue on their intended route. Albert crawled on his hand and knees to be able to find a better look
The river was said to have been 50 feet long and there was an embankment on the side of the road leading to the bridge making it easy for anyone crossing the bridge to be seen. The two cast lots to see if they would try to take the shorter route over the bridge to their destination or to avoid crossing the bridge and take the longer route. They chose the longer route, but after traveling a short distance on it found it laborious and agreed to go back and try crossing the bridge. With the sentry still standing guard not far from the end of the bridge, the two Union men crawled on hands and knees the length of the bridge, and, once across, quietly slid down the bank on the opposite side of the road from the sentry.
About that time the six sleeping soldiers arose from their sleep, but the escapees were able to move away without being seen. After advancing another mile they lay down under a tree and went to sleep and stayed in that location until another evening came and they continued their journey confident that Union troops were camped only a short distance away. Having become less afraid and more bold, they stopped at a farmhouse and a white woman responded to their knock at the door. Ben tried to convince her that they were spies for the Virginia Army going to be among the Union troops, but the woman wasn’t buying it. She declared that they were Yankees and their speech did not sound like those of Virginia. They bid that woman a hasty ‘Goodby’” and continued their journey towards the

James River, stopping at another cabin on the way that was inhabited by African Americans. Those folk gave them something to eat, but they left in haste when a boy came by and let them know that they had been reported to the Confederate authorities as being in the area.
After traveling a couple of miles through the woods, but returning to the road, the two felt a need to rest and went about fifty feet from the road where they had another narrow escape when a cavalry soldier who was looking for them passed by on the road near their position in the field.
Finally as the two were on the road again early in the morning they met an African American soldier riding a horse who was a member of the Union army. They were soon among the members of the United States 8th Colored Cavalry. The next day they were
taken to the location of their unit, the 12th New Hampshire Regiment, where they received a strong welcome and then awarded a 30 day furlough. Their ordeal had resulted in great weight loss for the men with Bacheler’s weight going from 145 pounds to 96 and Thompson having a similar weight loss. Bacheler received a commission of First Lieutenant and after
the war ended became a teacher in Gloucester, Mass. A coat that he was given by slaves somewhere along their escape route is still on display at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts.
A restoration project led by twin boys, 11 year old George and Charles King, from Gloucester in 2016 helped to save the coat from destruction.

able investment” did worse than the market.
So, why did trillions of dollars pour into such funds?
“Because of pressures,” says Matt Cole, CEO of Strive Investments, in my new video. “Their largest clients are blue states’ pension (funds) like CalPERS and the New York pension (fund) who put pressure on them: ‘Adopt these agendas or you’re going to lose us as your largest customer!’”
CalPERS still brags about “mitigating climate risk” and adding “climate-conscious board members” to Exxon’s board. Presidential Climate Envoy Jhn Kerry pompously bullied banks: “They (SET
ITAL)will(END ITAL) invest into climaterelated efforts,” he intoned.
Today, banks and even Blackrock are running from sustainability nonsense.
“What you’re seeing,” says Cole, “is ESG funds shuttering at record speed ... and they’re not apologizing.”
Progressives never do.
This fad didn’t just hurt investors; it hurt companies that America needs.
America needs highperformance computer chips. Intel was once the leading manufacturer of such chips. But now, even as Congress gives Intel billions in taxpayer handouts, the company is cutting thousands of jobs.
Why? While Intel’s competitors innovated, Intel obsessed about “sustainability.”
Intel’s website lists endless ESG goals like “environmental, health, wellness, and safety programs to care for people and the planet.” It even brags about “green software” ... whatever that is.
That’s a lot of energy spent not making the best chip. When companies spend time sucking up to politicians rather than innovating, they often decline. Intel’s stock fell 60% last year.
Fortunately, today more companies are focusing on basic capitalism -- producing better products for less money.

When I was co-host of “20/20,” I wondered what would happen when Disney bought ABC.
Not much changed for a while. But a few years later, after repeatedly rejecting videos I proposed about problems with Obamacare, ABC fired me.
Still later, I laughed as I watched Disney go full woke. The president of the entertainment content division said, “We have many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories, and yet we don’t have enough leads.”
Disney’s television animation producer added, “I was just, wherever I could, adding queerness.”
But many such movies flopped. “The Marvels,” featuring a Muslim teen and Black female sidekick, lost $237 million.
“Lightyear,” featuring the first same-sex kiss in a Disney-Pixar movie, lost $106 million.
“Elemental,” featuring a nonbinary character (a lake with earrings), didn’t even reach $30 million it’s opening week.
Now Disney’s quietly scaling back.
More companies have started to recognize a need to focus on their core business rather than virtuesignaling.

FDR era (far left), and the American public finally settle on Dwight D. Eisenhower (centrist).
Not this time.
This time, the American people presented a thesis: Trump.
Then they were presented a man who acted as Trump’s antithesis on virtually every policy, from immigration to taxes to foreign policy to social radicalism: Joe Biden.
And then they selected Trump again.
This means that Trump doesn’t need to synthesize lessons from Biden. Biden’s agenda has been roundly rejected -- for the man they originally rejected in favor of Biden. The
American public has bought what Trump is selling. And that means that Trump does indeed have a unique mandate. That mandate isn’t endless. The American public want, as Trump suggested in his inaugural address, “common sense.” They want the border closed and the economy booming; they want innovation, and they want social stability. They don’t want distractions and infighting and dramatics and hullabaloo. Trump seems poised to give it to them.
It was difficult not to watch Trump’s second inaugural address and get the sense that he understands the
assignment. Spanning just under 3,000 words, Trump kept to his message. He spoke without anger or bluster. He was flanked by leaders in innovation. When he promised a new golden age, that didn’t feel particularly audacious.
It felt right.
After a decade of Donald Trump, Americans know what he means.
And Trump knows what Americans meant when they elected him. They meant that they want success. They want winning. They want the American dream -- the chance to rise and fall on their own merits. They want to feel proud of their country again. We should all pray
that Trump is successful in that mission.
