Taking Good Care Of The Skin You’re In by David Colby Contributing Writer

Here is a science quiz of sorts for those of us who may have forgotten some of our high school biology: -What is the largest organ in the body? -Where does fifty percent of the dust in our homes come from? -What accounts for fifteen percent of our total body weight? If you answered “our skin” you are correct- to all three questions. This amazing, protective, self-regenerating organ is one of the body’s most important. Our skin

helps regulate body temperature, allows us to feel hot and cold and to touch things around us. It helps keep microbes from entering the body. As organs go, it is frequently one of the most taken for granted. Too often, it is also one of the body’s most neglected and abused. Fortunately, for those of us with skin in need of repair, or who want to enhance our skin’s health and appearance, there is help. Directly across the street from the Wentworth–Douglass Hospital in Dover are the offices of Dermatology and Skin Health and Skin See skin on 18

Yours truly up on the roof proving she isn’t always having fun in the snow. But after the work is done there is plenty of time to have fun skiing! dumping the snow over the edge. At first it was fun to be outside moving the snow around but after an hour I had made just a small dent. I took a break after two hours. This was hard work and it made snowshoeing up mountains not seem so difficult. Thankfully, after lunch, one of the guys in the shop, Chris, decided to give me a hand. Chris is an avid ice fisherman and he likes the cold but not the snow so much. There is so much snow load on the ice that when he cuts a hole through the ice, water springs up and makes icy slush all around. We finished the job together before the end of the work

Everyone I know is tired of shoveling snow. We’re wondering where we’re going to pile up the next snowstorm. Our walkway is now narrowed to just one shovel width and it is impossible to keep the mailbox clear. What a month! What a winter! Clearing snow should be an Olympic sport. I can’t remember having such a long stretch of fluffy unconsolidated cold deep snow! And where has the sun been hiding? Gosh will any honey bees survive since they need a warm day to clean out their hives? But I couldn’t be happier! All this snow is great! If you are still reading this then you’re laughing at me or you love playing in the snow too! I didn’t want to do it, but it is better to play it safe instead of having to hear “told you so” and dealing with a collapsed roof. I climbed up the ladder onto the roof and lugged the snow scoop up with me. We are extremely busy at work and no one wanted to help me. I set to work, one scoop at a time (like emptying a five pound bag of sugar one teaspoon at a time). Even though the temperature was just above zero and it was a bit breezy, I worked up sweat in a short time. I shed my coat and kept scooping and

A Kind And Thoughtful Act To The Editor: A short time ago, my friend Sheldon and his lovely wife Barbara were returning from a medical appointment in Laconia, and decided to stop at a well known Moultonboro restaurant for lunch. As he often does, Sheldon was wearing his WW II U.S. Marine Corps hat. While they were seated enjoying their meal, a gentleman walked by outside their window and waved. Sheldon didn’t recognize him, but thought the man may have noticed his hat. Perhaps he was a fellow Marine. Sheldon waved back, and the gentleman got into the Weirs Times delivery truck and continued on his route. While he was still a senior in high school, Sheldon and 4 of his buddies from the football team went down to the Marine Corps recruiting office on Feb. 15, 1943 to enlist. Sheldon was the only one that passed the physical, and he was called up in June, just a week after graduation. He went to Parris Island, SC for boot camp, and then transferred in September to the Marine Airforce Training Center at Cherry Point, NC. There he joined a brand new unit; the VMF(N)-537 night fighter group, which flew F6F Hellcats equipped with a new radar setup similar to the one used by the hunter/killer groups that wiped the U-boats from the Atlantic. The

Our Story

pilot used a special night display to identify enemy targets. The ground crew for each fighter included a plane captain (crew chief) and a mechanic (Sheldon’s job). Training completed, Sheldon shipped out of San Diego in Feb. 1944 on the baby flattop USS Long Island (CVE1; the Navy’s first escort carrier). After a stop in Honolulu, they reached Eniwetok in the spring. Shortly after that, Sheldon and 18 of his fellow mechanics were promoted to plane captain, and sent to Kwajalein and then to Engebi (all in the Marshall island chain). It was there they took responsibility, as a part of the Marine Fighter Squadron 113 (VMF-113), for their complement of F4U corsairs. This squadron flew missions to reduce the remaining Japanese garrisons in the Marshalls, as well as Truk in the Carolines. Sheldon told many interesting stories about these operations. VMF-I 13 was one of the first squadrons outfitted with rockets. Their early model Corsairs had fabric covered flaps (used to slow the aircraft for landing). He noticed that several planes returning from a rocket attack were landing “hot (too fast). Turns out the rockets set the flaps on fire and burned the fabric completely off! They sheathed the flaps with aluminum after that. The second story involved the conversion of the F4U single seat fighter

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. so it could carry an observer. The plane was fitted with a special 2 level seat with the observer in back and the pilot between his legs. The pilot sat too low to see out well, so the observer tapped him on the shoulder to tell him which way to turn! Sheldon took a ride in one of those rigs to deliver mail to Kwajalein. With the outer islands cleaned up, the group transferred in June, 1945 to Ie Shima, to support operations on Okinawa. Shortly after that, Sheldon boarded a freighter for San Francisco, and mustered out of the Marines on Nov 25, 1945. Sheldon and Barbara finished their meal and asked the waitress for their check. She told him he didn’t owe her a thing. A gentleman, grateful for Sheldon’s service in the war, had paid their entire tab! Sheldon was dumbfounded, and asked who the man was. She didn’t know, but her description exactly matched that of the gentleman who had waved to him. That generous man had no way of knowing that the marine he honored was Sheldon Cram, who was featured in the May 2, 2013 issue of the Weirs Times about the Alton Bay speedboat rides. Sheldon’s uncle Carl Cram owned the “Yankee Flyer and “Minuteman, and Sheldon drove for him during the summer of 1942. The story went on to say that Sheldon was offered early graduation See mail boat on 28

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Doing Good Work

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Even during the harshest of winters, like this one, I try to find something nice to do for others. While some turn to the dark side and use cabin fever and a lack of sunshine for their fall from grace, I find it best to fight back by doing a few good deeds. Occasionally, those good deeds will offer up unexpected rewards. For instance. I received a nice letter in the mail from my electric company, commending me on taking the time during these winter storms to shovel out a path from the street to the electric meter so their reader could do his/her job a little easier. It did make me feel good to know that my “extra mile was recognized and that in turn I also made someone else’s life a little bit easier; even if it was just for a few minutes and even though my thought in shoveling out the path was to give the oil delivery guy a nice path and the concerns of the meter reader never really crossed my mind, it still gave me a warm feeling inside. Doing good by keeping people level-headed and from going over the edge in the winter is something I have been committed to for years, along with my friend Vinnie, when we started FATSO years ago. FATSO (Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion) is a winter support

group for new transplants to the area. We don’t get paid for our efforts and find the work rewarding. Most folks think that our only course of action with FATSO is to help others learn how to properly do things in the winter; actions that one needs to master in order to survive in the winter like the best way to rake your roof and which snacks are essential to have on hand in case you should lose power during a blizzard. We also pride ourselves on being there for emotional support. Knowing how to do things to survive is essential but knowing how to keep your sanity while doing things like shoveling your driveway in wind chills of twenty below for the sixth Sunday in a row takes an even keel. In the past, this has been done at our regularly scheduled monthly FATSO meetings usually held at the a local restaurant or grange hall. (We usually have the first one of the year at a restaurant so we can explain to new members what a grange hall actually is so they will be able to find it for the next meeting.) Over the years we have seen FATSO membership and attendance at these events decline, even in the coldest and snowiest of winters. At first we were unsure of the reason. Were there really that many less new transplants coming to the area? It was hard to understand seeing that these past two winters have really been a testing ground for finding out which new transplants would still be here once the first sniff of that frozen dog dropping is exposed by the warmer suns of early spring. So,Vinnie and I have decided to travel to the FAT-

SO members. Bundling ourselves up against the elements we have been travelling door to door in Vinnie’s pickup, searching out those who may be on their last legs, ready to pack their bags and move south. The first few houses we stopped at were where natives lived who were quick to tell us while standing outside in T-shirts, that these past two winters have been nothing like the winter of such and such a year. We felt like we were losing the focus of our goal as each native tried to top the other with a story of a horrible winter in the past. But when we did finally find a house where a new transplant lived, we were glad we had continued on our quest. The man who came to the door was sallow-eyed, looking defeated, his calloused hands showing the ravages of his many attempts at keeping his narrow driveway clear as storm after storm came and went. “I don’t even know why I bothered, he said, a faraway look in his eyes. “It’s too damn cold to drive anywhere anyway. We spent a good hour there, calming him down, explaining that the spring really does come back. When we felt he was better, we left him with our phone numbers to call when he was feeling defeated again. He wasn’t the first; there were many others like him and many more that we have yet to get to. We realized we can never get to them all but just the fact that we have helped a few makes us feel good. Brendan’s new book “The Best Of A FOOL in New Hampshire will be published in early spring.

The “Jobs for Jihad Delinquents” Program At the White House Summit on Extremism That Shall Remain Unspecified Because Violent Followers Belonging To Unnamed Exby Michelle Malkin tremist MoveSyndicated Columnist ment Might Take Extreme Offense And Act Extremely, the feds are touting a groundbreaking new strategy to fight terrorists. Just kidding. It’s actually the same old futile strategy that biggovernment liberals use to cure everything: mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money. Instead of killing jihadists, keeping them off of our soil, locking up their poisonous spiritual agitators and shutting off their terror-funding pipelines, President Obama called on America and the world to “invest” in unnamed immigrant “communities” vulnerable to unnamed extremism. Some of the most generous welfare states on the planet have suffered horrific jihad attacks this year. Liberal Denmark’s soft-on-jihad rehab program has been a disaster. But that hasn’t stopped State Department spokes-babbler Marie Harf from mewling incessantly about “combating poverty” to combat ISIS. Vice President Joe Biden opened the convention of jihad-coddlers on Tuesday by emphasizing the need for “respect” (cha-ching) and “a sense of community.” White House senior aides spoke generically about terrorists of “all shapes and sizes,” as they studiously avoided the precise nature and identity of the perpetrators of evil that precipitated the meeting. Screw that.

Muslim jihadists chopped off the heads of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya this weekend. Muslim jihadists launched deadly shooting sprees in Copenhagen at a cartoonists free-speech event and a synagogue. Muslim jihadists murdered Jews at a kosher deli in Paris and slaughtered the entire staff of Charlie Hebdo over their drawings. Muslim jihadists caged and burned alive Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh. Muslim jihadists threw gays off of buildings in Iraq. Muslim jihadists beheaded journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, humanitarian workers Alan Henning and Peter Kassig, and Japanese nationals Haruna Yukawa and Kenji Goto Jogo. Muslim jihadists have kidnapped and slaughtered thousands of innocent men, women and children in Nigeria. The solution, the Obama administration wants 60 nations to D.C. to learn, is a super-sized community organizing campaign. It’s Jobs for Jihad Delinquents! No, this is not a “Saturday Night Live” anniversary skit. Politically correct public officials from L.A., Boston and Minnesota are holding seminars on their “outreach” efforts to disaffected yoots as shining counterterrorism models. In Minneapolis, where al-Shabaab recruiters have metastasized, the U.S. attorney has bought into Muslim grievancemongers’ complaints that “immigrant youngsters remain marginalized, without access to adequate education, employment and other opportunities.” Social justice warriors are united: Less “marginalization.” More midnight basketball.

Africa’s Vulnerable Sahel Region Targeted by Terror UNITED NATIONS--The vast swath of nine countries bordering the southern reaches of the Sahara desert are marked by John J. Metzler b y p o v e r t y , Syndicated Columnist drought and chronic instability. Yet these oft-forgotten lands are increasingly making the headlines as in the case of Mali a few years ago, when militant Muslim factions made power grabs against weak and often unstable governments. The widening attacks by the Islamic jihadi group Boko Haram in Nigeria underscore the challenge. Now the UN and its humanitarian partners have launched a massive $2 billion aid appeal which shall offer humanitarian assistance to the twenty million people who are short of food and the nearly three million people who have been uprooted from their homes. People who have lost hope and could be the prey of terror groups. “Escalating violence is a deeply worrying pattern that threatens hard-won gains in curbing the trend of growing needs in the Sahel,” states Robert Piper, the UN regional coordinator. He stresses, “Violence in northeast Nigeria, the volatile situation in Mali, and the crisis in the Central African Republic are creating more suffering

for communities that are already amongst the poorest in the world.” The UN’s relief coordinating Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns, “High levels of chronic vulnerability persist in the Sahel. Early in 2015 an estimated 20 million people are food insecure…acute malnutrition is expected to threaten the lives and development of 5.8 million children under five years of age.” Equally, the spreading conflicts and humanitarian crisis has particularly affected Chad, Mali and Niger. The Sahel comprises the geographic and climatic zone of transition between the Sahara to the north and the savanna to the South. Over 145 million people live in the nine selected countries. The UN’s Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos stresses, “We need the support of the international community and sustained government leadership to ensure that we do not forget the people of the Sahel.” Take Mali for example. The former French colony had a reasonably democratic government until 2012 when a combination of tribal militias and Al-Qaida terrorists tried to takeover. Although quick and focused French military intervention stopped the onslaught and stabilized the situation, the country of 17 million is amongst the poorest in the world. The UN’s Sahel plan has slated $377 million for Mali mostly in the

area of food aid; nearly one million people face severe food insecurity while 1.8 million more are moderately affected. Equally the UN must deal with 143,000 refugees as well as large numbers of internally displaced persons from the earlier

conflicts. The Sahel’s regional instability is highlighted by the dangerous and deteriorating situation in Libya which borders both Chad and Niger.

Glib ‘Happy Talk’ When Alfred E. Neuman said “What me worry?” on the cover of Mad magazine, it was funny. But this message was not nearly as funny comby Thomas Sowell ing from PresiSyndicated Columnist dent Barack Obama and his National Security Advisor, Susan Rice. In a musical comedy, it would be hilarious to have the president send out his “happy talk” message by someone whose credibility was already thoroughly discredited by her serial lies on television about the Benghazi terrorist attack in 2012. Unfortunately -- indeed, tragically -- the world today is about as far from a musical comedy as you can get, with terrorists rampaging across the Middle East, leaving a trail of unspeakable atrocities in their wake, and with Iran moving closer to producing a nuclear bomb, with an intercontinental missile on the horizon. We will be lucky to get through the remainder of President Obama’s term in office without a major catastrophe, from which we may or may not recover. Iran has announced repeatedly that it plans to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. But you don’t need an intercontinental missile to reach Israel from Iran. Teheran is less than a thousand miles from Jerusalem. As was said long ago, “Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.” It was painfully ironic to hear Ms. Rice tell us that the danger we face today is not as serious as the dangers we faced in World War II. Anyone who has actually studied the period that led up to World War II knows that the Western democ-

racies followed feckless policies remarkably similar to those that we are following today. And anyone who studies that war itself knows that the West came dangerously close to losing it before finally getting their act together and turning things around. In a nuclear age, we may not have time to let reality finally sink in on our leaders and wake up the public to the dangers. There was lots of “happy talk” in the West while Hitler was building up his Nazi war machine during the 1930s, as the Western intelligentsia were urging the democracies to disarm. The dangers of Hitler’s sudden rise to power in Germany during the early 1930s were played down, and even ridiculed, by politicians, journalists and the intelligentsia in both Britain and France. A temporary political setback for the Nazis in 1933 was hailed by a French newspaper as “the piteous end of Hitlerism” and a British newspaper said even earlier that Hitler was “done for.” Prominent British intellectual Harold Laski opined that Hitler was “a cheap conspirator rather than an inspired revolutionary, the creature of circumstances rather than the maker of destiny.” In other words, Hitler and the Nazis were the “junior varsity” of their day, in the eyes of the knowit-alls. Even after Hitler consolidated his political power in Germany, imposed a dictatorship and began building up a massive war machine, the Western democracies continued to believe that they could reach a peaceful understanding with him. There was euphoria in the West when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned from a conference in Munich, waving an agreement signed by Hitler, and See Sowell on 22

(SPM Wire) Who hasn’t seen a lineup of baby blue tuxedoed groomsmen on the mantle of an older relative? While some matrimonial trends thankfully expire, there are some newer ones that may be here to stay. Here are three worthwhile developments in the world of wedding planning that have taken hold in the past few years: •Personal Training: Many fitness clubs offer personal training pack-

•Wedding Websites: Want to communicate fluctuating information about accommodations, your registry and more to your guests? The best way to give your friends and family all the pertinent details they need to help you celebrate is through a wedding web-

site. User-friendly hosting sites can make creating your site easy, no matter the extent of your design skills. •Photojournalism: While posed photography likely will never go out of style, many couples are opting for a more photojournalistic feel to their wedding album. Whether sepia-toned, black and white, or full color, wedding photos are taking on a more kinetic feel that can truly showcase a couple’s personality.

Charitable Gift Makes A Unique Wedding Favor (Family Features) Pamper your wedding guests with a special keepsake they can treasure. After all, you want to thank each and every one of them for sharing in your special moment. It’s also a fun way for them to remember the celebration long after the wedding day is over. Here are a few ideas to spoil your guests: * Place a small silver bell at each place setting, and then observe the tradition of kissing your new spouse each time one rings * Fill favor boxes or organza bags with a sweet treat, such as Jordan almonds or pillow mints. * Small silver frames can do double-duty as wedding favors and place card holders. * Greet guests at an outdoor wedding with ornate fans to keep them cool. * Encourage your guests to kick up (or off) their heels by providing a basket of cute flip flops for dancing.

DEAR TIM: My backyard is not level. The ground slopes from the left to the right as you look out my back kitchen window. The land in the subdivision slopes in this general direction until it hits a small creek three blocks away. Ever since my neighbor built an in-ground swimming pool I have had water ponding at the boundary line between our two lots. It eventually goes away, but it’s unsightly. Why did this happen, how can it be fixed, who’s responsible, and could it have been prevented? --Lynn R., Colerain Township, Ohio DEAR LYNN: I’ve seen my fair share of property line issues like this. Years ago I had a minor runin with my neighbor at the new house I built for my family. This neighbor claimed that all sorts of extra water was now running across her lot that never had been there before. The lot I built on was tilted toward her house before I built. What I was quick to point out was that she was getting less water coming at her home because all of my roof water was being piped to the rear of my lot and deposited

This pond of rainwater is not normal. The next door neighbor blocked the natural swale with a new swimming pool. into a creek where it would have ended up had it run across her lot. We ended up being friends in the end when she saw I was trying to help her drainage issues. My college degree in geology and geomorphology has paid off more times than I can remember! If you had been lucky enough to sit in Dr. Lattman’s geomorphology lectures, you’d quickly discover that Mother Nature hates level ground and is constantly trying to erode, shape and transport all land to the oceans. Land that looks level is almost always slightly sloped toward a creek, brook, stream or river. If you do run across level land, it’s almost always been artificially created by man or beaver. In your case, the cause of the problem is pretty simple. As you point out, before your neighbor’s pool was installed the land where the pool sits was lower and your neighbor’s lot was tilted toward the natural creek. The pool

builders, no doubt, raised the pool deck slightly above the level of the land at the property line. If they had not done this, the overland flow of rain water would run into the pool fouling the clear, sparkling water. The pool, in effect, has become a miniature Hoover Dam. The sad thing is your miniature Lake Mead on your lot could have been prevented with a little extra work on the part of the pool builder. At the very least, he had two options. The pool builder could have built the pool even higher than it is now and then extended the natural swale around the pool on one or both sides. This is easier said than done because it’s all a matter of how much fall there is across your neighbor’s rear yard. It’s a tough tolerance to maintain when grading land, but the minimum slope plumbers use in house drain piping will allow water to flow across See builder on 26

Guinta does; take advantage of the radio time I am offering. In the last election someone must have warned Scott Brown, Walt Havenstein, and Marilinda Garcia that I ask questions that require an answer during the interview. Why would we bother if the host and listeners do not want to hear a stump speech? There is a reason that our sponsors and listeners have stayed with us for 19 years. In addition to well-known and those not known outside of NH, we have some great callers and guests. The Advocates is about issues and opinions. ******** Damon Linker ThisWeek.com: “Contemporary liberals increasingly think and talk like a class of self-satisfied commissars enforcing a comprehensive, uniformly secular vision of the human good. The idea that someone, somewhere might devote her life to an alternative vision of the good -- one that clashes in some respects with liberalism’s moral creed -- is increasingly intolerable. That is a betrayal of what’s best in the liberal tradition. ******** Rudy Giuliani: “President Obama doesn’t love America. Six long years

ago, Rush and Niel first to declare the wish that Obama would fail. A couple years ago, Niel stated and continues to state that Obama does not like me, my grandchildren, my fellow Americans, and our country! Why the uproar from some on both sides? Have you any memory of what this president has done and how he has treated others since taking office? I expect the Looney Left to protect Little “O, but will be surprised by some on the right where I am, who defend Little “O, and just think it is terrible that some of us will admit to not liking him because of the division of the country, using race far too often, telling us that we do not count. He lied to us many times regarding his socialist plan for health insurance, “keep your doctor, “keep your insuranc e , a n d another lie; “the most transparent administration ever. And then, declare that most every ILLEGAL that is here or planning to be here, are welcome. According to Obama, they will work and pay taxes! We are in financial turmoil, increasing the national debt, lack of jobs, and suggesting that the enemy, ISIS, would like us if they were working. Working where? Ask yourself; am I looking forward to a tribal America, where American exceptionalism does not exists? ******** I congratulate the children of Sen. And Mrs. Andrew Hosmer who attend a Laconia private religious school, for their outstanding grades powted in local paper, for the end of the marking period. I just wish the Senator would vote for financially less fortunate

parents to have some assistance for getting their children out of a government school that does not fit the needs of THEIR children. Please Senator, ear down that wall, and be someone for ALL of the children! How many of us would like to have our children in an education facility where we know that when the children return home at the end of the day; the children have been taught the truth, no indoctrination, the continuation of building that foundation as we would have. ********* Do you think that Barack has ever read the following by Nat Henoff (The Day They Came To Arrest The Book, 1982)? “Those who created this country chose freedom, with all of its dangers. And do you know the riskiest part of that choice they made? They actually believed that we could be trusted to make up our own minds in the whirl of differing ideas. That we could be trusted to remain free, even when there were very, very seductive voices – taking advantage of our freedom of speech – who were trying to turn this country into the kind of place where the government could tell you what you can and cannot do.

with excerpts from Shari Barbanel; Associate Editor Natural Practitioner Magazine Hippocrates once said, “All disease begins in the gut.â€? Scientists refer to the gut as the body’s ‘second brain’ as more than half of the body’s nerve cells are located in the gut. 70% of the immune system is located in the gastrointestinal or GI tract. GI Inflammation in the form of Gastro esophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and peptic ulcer affect more that 13 million Americans. Celiac disease, food allergies and intolerances and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are likely to account for millions more cases of GI inflammation. The causes for these diseases range from eating processed food, not getting enough exercise and coping with stress just to name a few. Steps you can take are: •Remove all inflammatory foods-sugar, wheat, corn, dairy, night shade veg., alcohol & caffeine.

(After a period of healing & your system has improved, you can slowly add 1 at a time back into your diet if tolerated.) •Avoid all processed and refined foods such as: White sugar/flour and snack foods made with white sugar/flour Fast food and fried foods Hydrogenated & partially hydrogenated fats (margarine or Crisco) Processed vegetable oils Preserved meats such as; bacon, salami, hot dogs and sausage Caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks, diet colas, & carbonated drinks •Remove chemical additives such as High fructose corn syrup, trans fats, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors & dyes & MSG •Increase consumption of anti-inflammatory foods such as salmon, walnuts, olive oil, avocados & dark green vegetables (if tolerable) •Drink at least eight 8 oz glasses of water daily to facilitate the body’s ability

to detoxify I also recommend digestive enzymes as they aid in the complete breakdown of food and assimilation of nutrients. Once we digest food to its base nutrients, optimal digestion is achieved which encourages healthy inflammatory responses. You need enzyme supplements If you do not eat raw fruits and vegetables, have bowel or digestive problems, eat only cooked and processed foods, eat white sugar frequently and overeat regularly. Dear children! Also today I call you: live your vocation in prayer. Now, as never before, Satan wants to suffocate man and his soul by his contagious wind of hatred and unrest. I am calling you, little children, begin anew, with enthusiasm, the walk of holiness and love; since I have come among you because of this. Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Good old winter in New Hampshire. An enchanted place filled with an ice castle, ski slopes, and enough snow over the last month or two to bury a car. It seems most folks have had their fill of snow. I can’t say I blame them. The snow is beautiful and if you have a winter hobby/sport it’s fun, but between shoveling, snow blowing, and plowing I think most people are

at their limit. Well, most grown ups, anyway. My kids think it’s amazing. Our kids climb the hills made by the plow pushing snow into our yard, they sled, and they explore a property that looks like a screen shot from the movie “Frozen“. Maybe they have the right idea. They also don’t have to shovel, though, I guess. If we’re not kids looking for a snow day or a sled trip, how do we cope with the weather? Vacations and hibernating seem to be two popular options, for most. What if our feelings move beyond coping and into real distress? A true depressed state? Most people are familiar with the term seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.). It is a depression that occurs every year at roughly the

same time (beginning in fall and ending in spring) and is related to a lack of sun and sunlight exposure. It is important to not dismiss S.A.D. as a simple “winter blues. If you are sad, anxious, irritable, fatigued, experiencing loss of interest in normal activities, and/ or gaining weight during the winter months you may be dealing with S.A.D. and should talk to your healthcare provider. I bring this up because I think it’s easy to write off these kind of feelings as stress, cabin fever, or “everyone gains weight in the winter. I think sometimes we don’t like to admit struggles or ask for help. I can understand all of that, but it’s important in all aspects of our health to have some introspection and some brutal honesty and face our problems. No more head in the sand. This is especially important to us as New Hampshire residents. We face S.A.D. more commonly than most. For example, it is commonly noted that Florida only has a 1% occurrence of S.A.D. while New Hampshire has about 10% of the population dealing with this type of issue. The most common treatment is phototherapy. Basically, a light with fluorescent tubing (that has a screen to block UV rays) emulates sunlight. When used, the light box helps replace the sun exposure that is lost in the winter here. Talk to your provider about usage and type of light, but 15-30 minutes in the morning is common. These lights are widely available and you can find them for under $100. You can also just try to get more real sun. Even on gray days, the sun sends rays through the clouds. It’s important to note that the benefits of light therapy usually are noted quickly (usually within the first few days), but will stop if the use of the box is discontinued. Once diagnosed and versed in using phototherapy you can use the light box in a preventative manner at the

The Heart-Head Connection

Several recent studies highlight the relationship between a heart healthy lifestyle and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. While more research still needs to be done, certain lifestyle choices, such as physical activity and diet, may help support brain health and prevent Alzheimer’s. These lifestyle changes have been shown to lower the risk of other diseases; such as heart disease and diabetes,

which have been linked to Alzheimer’s.

Experts agree that Alzheimer’s is similar to other conditions. It is most likely the result of multiple factors, including: age, genetics, environment, and lifestyle. You cannot change your age or genes, but reducing other risk factors is significant. According to the experts it may be possible to lower the risk of developing dementia by as

much as 50% or even slow disease progression.

It’s been over ten years since a new medication has been introduced into the market to treat Alzheimer’s. At present only 4 medications are available, these are used mainly to treat symptoms and may possibly slow disease progression. Considering its prevalence this is astonishing. Currently there are over 22,000 people diag-

nosed with Alzheimer’s in New Hampshire and every minute someone is diagnosed with dementia in the United States. As baby boomers begin to enter the age of risk a dramatic increase can be expected according to the research.

With no downside and plenty of known benefits, healthy lifestyle choices can improve your health and possibly protect your brain.

Dry Skin and Winter Itch

Why do we get dry skin in the winter? The short answer is “humidity”. As winter approaches, humidity levels across the region drop. Our skin is surprisingly sensitive to this change. It is the water content of our outermost layer of skin that makes the difference between normal skin and dry skin. This outermost layer is composed of dead skin cells that are cemented together to form a protective covering over the living skin cells below. Normally, this outer layer has the same surface area is the skin layers beneath it. When its water content is low, however, this layer shrinks in volume and surface area. As it tightens against the skin below, it eventually cracks, producing that flaky or scaly appearance we recognize as dry skin. The outer layer of skin is always losing water through evaporation, but this is accelerated when the humidity drops. The lower the humidity, the more water loss occurs and dryer it becomes. Our skin produces natural oils to help seal in water, but bathing, as well as harsh soaps and detergents, deplete these natural oils aggravating dry skin. What to do? Here are 10 simple things to consider doing to help prevent and treat dry winter skin: 1. Use a humidifier. Look to achieve the humidity level of 60%. 2. Limit showers to 10 minutes with a warm, not hot, water. 3. Use gentle non-soap cleansers such as Cetaphil or Aquanil. 4. Use cream-based moisturizers that come in a jar or tub. Lotions have a higher water content to make them easier to pump. The more water against your skin, ironically, the dryer it becomes. 5. Use moisturizer within minutes of coming out of the shower. This helps to seal in moisture. 6. Use fragrance-free products. There are chemicals found on dryer sheets or in detergents that can act as an irritant to dry skin, accentuating itch. 7. Don’t be afraid to go natural. Virgin coconut oil is actually a great natural moisturizer. Avocado oil is very good as well. 8. Eat your omegas. Consuming fish or heart-healthy omega 3s has been shown to help regulate the skin’s oil production. 9. To minimize further damage to your skin, avoid harsh loofahs, bath brushes and even face cloths. 10. When in doubt, take a vacation to a humid location. The doctor prescribes it!

Know Your ABCDEs

The majority of skin cancers are composed of three different types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Doctors have developed a 5-point “Signs and Symptoms of Skin Cancer to promote early detection, especially of potentially deadly melanoma. If you have a spot on your skin about which you have a question, use the following guide:

A is for Asymmetry- One half is unlike the other. B is for Border- Irregular, scalloped or poorly defined. C is for Color- Varied from one area to another. D is for Diameter- Greater than 6mm (1/4 inch). E is for Evolving- A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest, or is changing. Regular self-examination of the skin is key. Get the skin healthy, take steps to maintain skin health and the skin will take care- and repairitself. The statistics around skin health in general, and skin cancer in particular, make a compelling case for prevention. - 5 million people are treated each year in the US for skin cancer - One in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime - Most skin cancer is preventable While there are hereditary factors over which we have little control, the major causes of skin cancer are environmental. The principle, avoidable cause of skin cancer is exposure to UV radiation

from the sun: About 90% on non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation. Skin cancer breaks down into three major categories. First, and most common, is basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Roughly 2.8 million people were

diagnosed with BCC in the US last year, and while rarely fatal, basal cell carcinoma can be a very unattractive addition to its victims’ skin. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer, with an A good deal of the staff effort at Dermatology & Skin estimated 700,000 cases Health is directed toward prevention.

Tanning Beds

Simply stated, tanning beds are a serious threat to skin health. The evidence is clear: • Ultraviolet radiation (UVR), the kind absorbed from most tanning beds, is a proven human carcinogen • As of September 2, 2014, UV tanning devices were reclassified by the US FDA from Class I (low to moderate risk) to Class II (moderate to high risk)devices. • Eleven states prohibit tanning for minors under age 18 • More than 400,000 cases of skin cancer each year in the US are linked to indoor tanning • One indoor UV tanning session increases users’ risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by 67% and basal cell carcinoma by 29% • Of melanoma cases among 18-29- year olds who had tanned indoors, 76% were attributable to tanning bed use.

that preventative action is required to protect the skin. The darker the white beads become, the greater the level of UV risk. After Treatment, What’s Next? declaring that it meant “peace for our time. Our time turned out to be less than one year before the biggest and most ghastly war in history broke out in 1939. Today, when people can graduate from even our most prestigious colleges and universities utterly ignorant of history, many people -- even in high places -- have no idea how close the Western democracies

came to losing World War II. For the first three years of that war, the West lost battle after battle in both Europe and Asia. France collapsed and surrendered after just six weeks of fighting, and few expected the British to survive the blitzkrieg Hitler unleashed on them from the air. Americans were defeated by the Japanese in the Philippines and, as prisoners of war, faced the horrors of the

infamous Bataan death march. When the British finally won the battle of El Alamein in North Africa in November 1942, this was their first victory, more than three years after Britain entered the war. A nuclear war is not likely to last three years, so there is unlikely to be time enough to recover from years of glib, foolish words and catastrophic decisions.

What a bloody crock. States like Minnesota and Maine have bent over backward to resettle thousands upon thousands of Somali refugees -- putting their demands for halal food freebies, taxpayer-funded footbaths and “cultural sensitivity over the safety and well-being of nativeborn citizens and taxpayers struggling to make ends meet. While grandmothers and disabled soldiers and breast-feeding moms must submit to invasive TSA screening, Muslim leaders in Minneapolis have the feds groveling in apology over increased scrutiny of some Somalis. I mean, it’s not like dozens of young male members of their “community are flying off to the Horn of Africa and the Middle East to take up arms for jihad after benefiting from America’s blind generosity. Oh, wait. They are. The persistent leftwing myth of the poor, oppressed jihadist is absolute madness. How many times do we have to remind the clueless kumbaya crowd that al-Qaida mastermind Ayman al-Zawahiri

Do You Hear Spring? by Steve White Contributing Writer

After reading this article, venture outside and listen for just a moment. Do you hear spring? Wait for it………do you hear it now? All around your home, nature is anxiously awaiting the new life that springtime embodies. Look for that first “cardinal kiss.” Watch as the male, with a magnificent air of regal ceremony, gently offer his mate a sweet morsel of a freshly hulled sunflower kernel. A tilt of her head allows her royal majesty to accept his gift. The tapping on trees, telephone poles and even human abodes are signals used by territorial male woodpeckers to search for a mate before the upcoming nesting season. These sounds can be heard from miles around, greatly increasing responses from other dominant males or receptive females. Woodpeckers are one of the first wild bird species to start nesting, usually at the end of February or beginning of March. Mourning doves are earning their name as

they commence their “mournful” cooing to each other. Male and female mourning doves look the same, but with the advent of spring, it is very easy to distinguish the sexes. The bird doing the chasing is the male, pure and simple. The other dove acting shy or “hard to get” is the female. She picks only the best mate available to ensure that her offspring possess the strongest traits she can find. Bluebirds arrive toward the beginning of March around the New England region in search of last year’s successful nesting area. Nest boxes for these migrants should be thoroughly cleaned out and already on their free standing poles. Be sure to face the hole east or south, any direction but north. Yes, birds know directions. After all, birds fly south for the winter, not north. Backyard birders can offer nesting birds assistance in many ways. Save all hair from haircuts and pet grooming. Place handfuls of this soft material in an old suet basket or fine mesh bag. Hang this offering in the shelter of the nearest tree. Birds love to line their finished nest

with human or pet hair to soften the rough twigs or stiff grasses used to form the basis of each nest. Cut pieces of string or yarn about 6 inches long and use with the clumps of hair. Never use dryer lint as some sources recommend. Dryer lint may absorb the wetness of spring air or rainfall and soak wild bird nestlings. Not matter what the calendar tells you, a true backyard birder will employ the wild birds to notify them about the upcoming seasons. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. would have been so much easier to deal with while the pool was under construction. If you’re friendly with your neighbor and can have a civil discussion about the solution, I’d advise you to go for the open swale around the pool rather than the field drain and piping. This method, now that the pool is built, is probably the least expensive fix. That makes it a win/win for you and your neighbor. Most common law is pretty clear on this issue. You’re usually not allowed to impede water, causing it to flood an adjacent lot. You’re also not allowed to reshape your lot and dump water in a direction it otherwise would not have flowed naturally. Let’s hope you don’t have to get attorneys involved in this dispute. Your county or township health officials may be able to provide some leverage if your neighbor resists fixing the issue. The standing water is a health issue as it provides a great breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects of interest. I’m hoping you have a good relationship with your neighbor and he’ll work as fast as possible to fix your lot drainage issue!

Escalating terrorist attacks inside Libya such as the savage beheading of 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt, as well as a growing climate of lawlessness, highlight the “imminent danger confronting Libya, its people and the wider region warned the UN’s special envoy Bernardino Leon. He told the Security Council that, “Extremist groups with radical ideologies, associated with Al Qaida have been on the rise since the end of the armed conflict in 2011. Libya’s Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Dairi stated the challenge to the Security Council; terrorism flourishes “in a front stretching from the Middle East to North Africa to the Sahel. He added that Libya has become “a hub for terrorism in North Africa and the Sahel. Americans have witnessed the unstable aftermath of the Libyan revolt which saw the bloody attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi in 2012 which killed the American Ambassador Chris Stevens and three security personnel. Given that ISIS and its armed allies are turning already fragmented Libya into another ethnic tinderbox, and that Libya, even during the days of Colonel Ghadafi’s regime, had long meddled in the Sahel region, it’s vital to understand the ethnic, transportation route and often criminal smuggling ties which connect Libya with the Sahel. Thus the Sahel’s importance goes beyond the obvious. Rebuilding a fragile humanitarian foundation in an already poor area facing the spillover from regional conflicts such as Libya remains crucial as part of a wider security architecture. Humanitarian aid may serve as a firebreak to keep violence from spreading to a tinderbox region. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. and Varney. On HB 677, the following representatives voted AGAINST prohibiting taxpayer dollars to support abortion: Fraser, LeBreche, Fisher, Flanders, and Fields. (This bill is a NO-BRAINER for ANY type of “conservative”, so shame on these Republican legislators who voted to support taxpayer funding of abortion.) This bill ESPECIALLY goes against the Republican platform. There are also a few legislators in Belknap who are “taking walks” on life votes. (This just means the legislators leave the hall for the vote so it is not recorded.) They are: Dave Russell: HB 194 – No Vote/Excused; HB 677 NV/NOT Excused; and HB 670 NV/NE Peter Varney: HB 194 – Voted

against Life at Conception; HB 670 NV/NE; HB 677 NV/NE George Hurt: HB 194 – NV/EX; HB 677 NV/NE; HB 670 – voted FOR rights of conscience The Belknap Representatives who voted across the board in support of LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS are: Comtois, Luther, Howard. Kudos to them! There are other life votes not mentioned here, so if you would like to look up your legislators’ complete voting record, just go to www.gencourt. state.nh.us. And, you may also want to contact your legislator regarding their support (or lack thereof) of the life portion of the Republican platform. But, at least you now have the information. Information is ALWAYS a good thing.

The view skiing back to the Ski Hearth Farm along the Garden Loop, beautiful snow. The Ski Hearth Farm in Sugar Hill on Streeter Pond Road is celebrating its grand opening season for their new Nordic and snowshoe Trails.

Charlie was lucky enough to spot this fine Barred Owl in Franconia! Maybe you’ll see it too while kicking and gliding at the Franconia Village XC Center patenaude from 3

isn’t long but it is a fun hilly trail through the woods. I had a long day outside and supper sure tasted good especially sitting next to the hot woodstove. No surprise, I slept like a log.

Cross-country Skiing is Great! The cross-country skiing is fabulous everywhere! Big and small touring centers all over New Hampshire have all their trails groomed and open. Last weekend Charlie and I stayed very close to home and skied at the Franconia Inn and the new Ski Hearth Farm Nordic trails. The Franconia Village XC Center has old school classic tracked trails that will take you gliding along the Ham Branch of the Gale River or through the woods, over hills to connect to other inns in Franconia--visit Lovett’s or the Horse and Hound. We really enjoy the Ham Branch Loop. The snow and ice on the river is beautiful. I like skiing behind the Franconia Inn and seeing families having fun. Zooming down the hill children ride snow-tubes, people are ice skating on the cleared pond and others are huddled around a fire pit. Just driving by on Rte 116 you can’t see all the fun winter activities going on right behind the Franconia Inn. Just up the road in Sugar Hill, on Streeter Pond Road the Ski Hearth Farm is celebrating their grand opening season as a Nordic Center. Brand new trails that are well groomed for classic and for skating

and a nice warming lodge with a twist—no trail fee is being charged this season. Due to a complication with their conservation easement they were not able to charge for use of the trails this season. The trails range from easy loops around their farm fields to competition loops designed by Morton Trails. The Red Loop’s rolly terrain through the woods is a fun ski. And they sell the best farm fresh eggs too. Both Franconia Village XC Center and the Ski Hearth Farm have dedicated snowshoe trails. I see a lot of people out there tromping along these trails with smiles on their faces. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available too. Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon, March 7th The Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon to benefit the New England Ski Museum is coming up on March 7th! The 42k or 21k event is not just for racers but for the majority of ski tourers. Register today at Skireg.com. After the event there is a fun awards banquet sponsored by the Omni Mount Washington Resort in the Grand Hotel Ballroom—I’ll be there and I hope you will be too. Have fun!
