Greens, Greenland And Winter Golf by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Around 800 years ago, southeastern Greenland was indeed green, despite its Arctic locale. Numerous settlements dotted the coast. But global cooling and climate change made the region inhospitable, and the settlements were abandoned. Greenland came to mind recently when Loudon Country Club put pins up on its greens and hosted scores of linksters for

February golf action. It delighted me because it underscored the Granite State’s climatic diversity. One could find snow and great skiing at Gunstock in Gilford on Saturday and then head 25 miles south to Loudon on Sunday to play golf. Kudos to the folks at Loudon Country Club for taking a chance and opening early. I love LCC for many reasons, besides the fact that there’s a beautiful, scenic golf course there. See moffett on 36

There really hasn’t been a better time to be alive when it comes to technology and the recent advances in television and sound equipment. These advances have made it possible for us to never leave home to go out to the movies or a concert as we can get that experience in our own living room or Home Theater Room. Still, that experience should be utilized to its full capacity and that is why putting together the tools for that experience should be put in the hands of the professionals like Mark Bourgeault,

owner of Surround Sound Installation Of Meredith. Mark has been designing and installing Surround Sound and Home Theater systems for the past eight years after having spent seventeen years in the Car Audio field. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

More Great Ideas

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It’s been awhile since I came up with some new ideas for lottery scratch tickets here in New Hampshire. It’s not that I need to come up with ideas; no one is asking me to, but I just can’t help myself and I know the folks at the Lottery Commission are paying attention. Way back in the late 1990s, long before we went from homo sapiens who walked around standing upright to homo sapiens walking around hunched shouldered as we stare down at our smartphones, I wrote my first column on new scratch ticket ideas, one idea called “Pot Holes and Frost Heaves which the Lottery Commission asked for my permission to use. Well, the celebrity and fame that followed had me on a good high for a few weeks, but then it faded. I have since tried to get that feeling back as I attempt each year to come up with new ideas for scratch tickets which are never used. Still, I know the Lottery Commission is paying attention since I once poked fun at their “Smells Like Bacon scratch ticket and they sent me two in the mail. (I didn’t win but it was delicious on my turkey sandwich.) So, here I am once again sending out to the Universe and the Lottery Commission a few new ideas for ways to get people to give them money

with the distant dream of winning big. I know they are both listening, so here goes. As we become more environmentally conscious, I think that lottery tickets that don’t really exist would be a great idea. This ticket would be called “Saving The Planetâ€? and you would simply go to your local convenience store, give the cashier a dollar and they would press a button which would instantly announce “winnerâ€? or “loser.â€? With no physical tickets in play there would be less waste and, according to a friend of mine in the medical field, could also help cut down on “Scratchers Wristâ€? which comes from playing too many tickets, serving a second important function. Also, playing a scratch ticket that isn’t really a ticket will not only make less waste but will also be faster and thus save time and money‌uh‌.well...time anyway. If Donald Trump becomes president I think that would present a great opportunity to take advantage by developing a scratch ticket using his name. I have no idea how it would be played, but I guarantee you it will be great. A few months ago I came up with a ticket idea that utilized the idea of the now immortal scratch ticket that smelled like bacon. I thought another great idea would be a scratch ticket that, when scratched, smells like nothing. This would be a great sell in the summertime to tourists who are coming here from big, overpopulated and smelly cities who have never experienced the smell of “nothingâ€?. Of course, once they get to their lakefront or beachside destination, the lure of smelling nothing

will lose its appeal after a few days so it is important to sell these tickets only at northbound rest areas‌um, excuse me‌ welcome centers. As they load up on cheap booze for the week, a giant display of “Smells Like Nothingâ€? scratch tickets should be on display as they wait on the checkout line with other visitors. As the technology for finding almost instantly what your DNA tells about you, I’m sure we are only a year or two away from DNA stations where you will be able to go to the convenience store and insert DNA from your cheek in a machine right next to the ATM and find out instantly that you are not really your sister’s brother and other life altering facts. So, why not prepare for a DNA themed scratch ticket. I guess you’re waiting for me to give you a great idea on how this one would be played, but I haven’t quite figured it out yet. I just know it would come with a Q-Tip and you could win as much as 25,000 dollars while at the same time dramatically changing everything you believed about your life up to that point. But, hey, it might be worth it. Well, that’s about it. I am pretty exhausted at this point coming up with great ideas. I know the universe and the Lottery Commission are paying attention and I give them permission to use any one of my great ideas. They don’t even have to send me a couple of sample tickets in appreciation. I never win anything on them anyway. Visit Brendan’s website at www.BrendanTSmith. com

“Iggz

Age: 8 • Sex: Neutered Male • Breed: Domestic Shorthair

Iggz came to the shelter because he was overwhelmed by the energy in his previous home. This big guy is a couch potato! He is aectionate and is very much a lap cat with the people that he knows and trusts. He may take extra time to warm up to strangers as he is very shy when ďŹ rst meeting new people. Iggz isn’t particularly playful. He would rather lounge around the house with you! He has shared his home with a fellow feline and peacefully co-existed with them. He cannot go home with dogs as they make him very anxious. Iggz can only share his home with older children (10+) as his experiences with younger children have overwhelmed him. Iggz is looking for a low-energy home with some human companions to relax with. Could Iggz be the cat for you?

Letter To Wolfeboro Residents Dear Wolfeboro Residents: Congratulations on your decision to create the Solarize Wolfeboro program. We (Sun Dial Solar) were one of the companies interviewed by your selecting committee. In the end we were not selected even though we were told (in writing) that “it was not an easy decision. The quality and prices you offered were superior to others BUT we lost out, “because your company has not had as many projects as the selected company in Wolfeboro. We are baffled - how does this matter to the residents of your town? Best rates, best products, a proven track record and a long list of references was offered to the committee. While we respect the committee’s decision, we urge the residents to please give us a chance to bid on your project. We promise you will be glad you did. Sincerely yours, Fuat Ari, Owner, Manager Sun Dial Solar LLC Chichester, NH.

Senate Should Withhold Consent To the Editor: The next Supreme Court Justice will have a significant impact on the life of every American; this makes his/her judicial philosophy and the Senate’s actions vitally important. The Constitution speci-

Our Story

fies that Presidents nominate and the Senate Advises and Consents to (or withholds consent for) the Presidents’ Supreme Court nominees. The President and the Senate set their own criteria and schedule. (The Senate withheld consent from about 1/4 of the past Supreme Court nominees.) Senators Obama, Clinton, Schumer, Biden and others have filibustered Supreme Court nominees and/or declared that a President’s nominee must not be approved in his last year in office, I agree. The four (President Obama intends to nominate another) progressive Supreme Court Justice) believe that they have a right to change the Constitution’s meaning as they want. The two reliable conservative justices (Justice Scalia was the third) believe that the Constitution means what it says, that is a compact with the American people to limit government power, and that changes to the Constitution are to be made by the American people via Amendments (as they have done 27 times) not by Supreme Court Justices. Justices Roberts and Kennedy are unpredictable. Many important recent Supreme Court decisions were decided on a 5-4 vote. Justice Scalia’s vote protected a near century old Memorial cross erected by soldiers on public land and American’s right to own a gun. Progressive Justices plus a swing Justice

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. outlawed traditional marriage laws, allowed taking property from one person (typically poor) to give to another (rich), and re-wrote Obamacare to force it on the majority of Americans who oppose it. Who would have imagined that the rights and traditions of our country and 315 million Americans were only protected by or were swept away by the vote of a single Justice? Almost all our Bill of Rights protections are under attack. With one more progressive Supreme Court Justice, many of our rights and the limits of our Constitution will be swept away, e.g., freedoms of speech and religion, Second Amendment, protection against warrantless searches and detainment, property rights, and approval of Presidential actions that are contrary to the laws of Congress. One more progressive Supreme Court Justice and the US Constitution becomes a scrap of paper and our Constitutional rights disappear at the whim of bureaucrats and politicians. The American people can choose this by electing Hillary Clinton and a Democrat controlled Senate. Until then the Senate should do what it was elected to do, to stop President Obama’s agenda; in this case the Senate must withhold consent from President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, March 10, 2016

The 2016 GOP Debate Debacle When the dust settles on this wild and wacky GOP primary season, there will be at least one clear Biggest Loser: the Republiby Michelle Malkin can National Syndicated Columnist Committee. After 2012, when liberal journalists routinely hijacked the party’s 20 televised debates while cashing in on ratings and advertising revenue, the RNC resolved to change narrative-surrendering business as usual. There would be no more cable TV anchors belligerently taking President Obama’s side while arguing with the GOP nominee (as Candy Crowley infamously did with Mitt Romney over Benghazi). There would be no more former Democratic operatives-turned journalists injecting their leftwing social agenda into GOP primary forums (as Clinton adviserturned-ABC newsman George Stephanopoulous did at the January 2012 Republican debate in New Hampshire when he pushed the Democrats’ War on Women propaganda by pressing Republicans on a nonsense contraceptive ban.) And there would be real balance in the selection of moderators, through partnerships “with conservative media to make sure the concerns of grassroots Republicans are addressed.” RNC chairman Reince Priebus declared in 2014 after the committee adopted measures to reassert control over the process: “The liberal media doesn’t deserve to be in the driver’s seat.”

How’s that working out? It’s the same old, same old. Last week’s debate hosted by CNN was commandeered by a Telemundo celebrity journalist Maria Celeste Arraras, known as “the Katie Couric of Spanish TV,” who soaked up nearly half the show representing “the Latino community” on issues such as Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to the RNC. She did the same during a Democratic presidential debate in 2004, when she argued with candidates about driver’s licenses for immigrants here illegally. The lone conservative token questioner, Salem radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt, received a fraction of the time. The infamous “screaming lady” in the audience earned far more buzz. Hewitt had made an earlier appearance in the second debate hosted by CNN last September. But again, he was relegated to the margins. As even the left-wing New York Times pointed out, the network “came to the second Republican primary debate looking for a fight” along with an agenda of setting up “catfights” between Donald Trump and the rest of the candidates. Conservative blogger Scott Johnson of Power Line noted that instead of giving GOP voters “a chance to assess the strengths of the candidates and to pick the strongest candidate to achieve their objective...(CNN moderator) Jake Tapper had other ideas in mind. His consignment of Hugh Hewitt to the witness protection program is representative of his pursuit of other ideas.” The third debate hosted by CNBC in Boulder was deemed a complete disaster by observers

The Saving of America

This election season has been a tempest of epic proportions. We are watching an epic battle of “Establishment” vs. “Non-Estabby Jane Cormier lishment”. And, Hooksett, NH. with all this debate and rancor, I think perhaps we may be missing the forest through the trees. There is no doubt we are watching both sides of the political ticket deal with this same issue. Bernie Sanders has held quite an appeal for those voters tired of the usual Clinton politicking and although the delegates will not be there for Bernie, his supporters have certainly sent a message that the Democratic “establishment” had better start listening to their voters. We don’t hear much about this debate nearly enough from the media moguls. This is not surprising since most in the media are decidedly left in their politics. It is better to leave THAT sleeping giant alone. Especially when you have such a field day over in the Republican field. See malkin on 34 The Republican primary debates

seem to bring in good ratings. Yes, indeed, the media has been lapping up all the hatred and anger spewing within the Trump craze. And it is within this debate, we need to be most careful. I fear we have mixed everything together and this mixture is blinding many to what is standing right in front of us - the loss of our liberty and the eventual loss of our Republic as we know her. While we argue about who is best for America in the Presidential race, we have lost sight of what is truly at stake. Some folks on the Republican side seem committed to the “showing them” mentality. While it may be fun to thumb one’s nose at the Republican Establishment, one needs to be careful not to cut one’s nose off to spite one’s face. The Republican/Conservative debate should be about SHRINKING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. It should be about getting government out of the way for business to bloom. And while a Trump presidency may make some feel good about shoving it to the GOP, it is misguided to believe a man who courted the corrupt political system for 40 years is suddenly goSee cormier on 34

UN Security Council Tightens Sanctions Noose on North Korea UNITED NATIONS— The UN Security Council has tightened the economic sanctions noose on North Korea in response to the Pyongyang reby John J. Metzler gime’s nuclear Syndicated Columnist and ballistic missile proliferation. The fifteen member Council voted unanimously to slam a wide range of economic, scientific and trade bans on the reclusive communist country in direct response to North Korea’s fourth nuclear weapons test and a ballistic missile launch earlier this year. U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power called the resolution “a major upgrade” to a plethora of existing sanctions slapped on North Korea over the past few years. Amb. Power stated, that the sanctions would “send an unambiguous and unyielding message to the DPRK regime, the world would not accept your proliferation.” The resolution came after intense behind the scenes negotiations especially among the United States, China, Japan and Russia since the North Koreans tested what they claimed was an H bomb in early January. Though the People’s Republic of China has long served as a political enabler for the DPRK, the stark reality has evolved where Beijing is

increasingly concerned about the “loose cannon nature” of the current rule of Kim Jong-un. Importantly Ambassador Power stated, “China’s agreement to support additional UN sanctions sends a strong message to North Korea that it cannot count on Beijing to shield it from the costs of flouting international law.” But Beijing’s diplomatic support comes with a price. Though China is deeply distressed over the growing instability in neighboring North Korea, the PRC is equally concerned over American plans to safeguard South Korea and adjacent regions with a new missile defense program. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ( THAAD) program could neutralize the nascent North Korean short and mid range missile advantage over South Korea and equally protect U.S. military base facilities in Japan and Guam island. Though the PRC was ideologically linked to North Korea since the Korean war, since the 1990’s Mainland China has opened significant commercial ties with South Korea to the point where as of the last decade, China has become capitalist South Korea’s largest trading partner. Part of the deal for getting Beijing to support the resolution may be ceding to PRC political pressure on South Korea not to accept, or at least significantly delay, American THAAD missile batteries. China claims the defensive system is a regional threat.

The PRC still views North Korea, though a rogue regime, as a vital buffer state between the Chinese Mainland and American-influence in free South Korea. Over the past decade, the Security Council has adopted four resolutions concerning North Korea’s widening nuclear proliferation; most of the provisions had significant loopholes or were hampered by sloppy or selective enforcement. But as Japan’s Ambassador Mo-

tohide Yoshikawa stated, “Resolutions and sanctions are effective only when implemented. Therefore what we have achieved is not the end but the beginning.” Implementation and enforcement of the economic embargo will prove challenging. New Zealand’s deputy Ambassador Carolyn Schwalger stated that North Korea will not “benefit from its provocative and combatSee Metzler on 35

Last Chance For America? The worst political blunder of all time, according to scientist Freeman Dyson, was the decision of the emperor of China in 1433 to cut off his by Thomas Sowell country from Syndicated Columnist the outside world. In the wake of that decision, China lost its position in the forefront of human achievements and fell behind, over the centuries, to become a Third World country. Before the end of this month, the United States of America may break that record for the worst political blunder of all time. Professor Dyson attributed the Chinese emperor’s blunder to “powerful people pursuing partisan squabbles and neglecting the long-range interests of the empire.” That can be our path to disaster as well. After the results of “Super Tuesday,” we find ourselves with front-runners in their respective parties who each could, as President of the United States, take the decline of America under the Obama administration, even further down, to a point of no return. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton was in charge of the foreign policy that destroyed governments in Egypt and Libya that were no threat to America’s

interests or allies, and plunged both countries into a turmoil from which only Egypt managed to rescue itself, while Libya has become another hotbed of terrorist activity. Yet Secretary Clinton is running on her “experience” -- even though it is an experience of unmitigated disasters for America, around the world. Her e-mail scandals and lies are important mainly as symptoms of her utter disregard of anything other than her own financial and political interests. While Hillary Clinton seems, for all practical purposes, to be unstoppable in her quest for the Democrats’ nomination, Donald Trump is by no means inevitable on the Republican side. But he may become unstoppable after the next round of primaries, especially if he wins in winner-takeall states. Most of Trump’s wins in various state primaries have been achieved without winning a majority of the votes. Yet these wins can create an impression of great victories, even when most Republican voters voted against Trump. The fracturing of the majority vote among numerous other candidates is the key. What prevents the anti-Trump majority from coming together in support of one candidate who can defeat Trump? Only the kinds of narrow political squabbles that ruined China. See Sowell on 38

Just to be clear, I am not giving the report by the committee of five or the report of the fifteen; I’m just reporting on the report of the five that was published in the Granite Monthly issue of December, 1895. Committees have been around for a long time and it is not unusual for one committee to appoint another to deal with a certain aspect of its responsibilities. The report under consideration was on elementary school education in the State of New Hampshire under the oversight of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Fred Gowing. The names of those on the committees I have not been able to locate but assume that the New Hampshire State Teachers Association may have been involved. The Teachers Association had its beginning in the year1854 and was one of ten founding states of the National Education Association in 1859. Local yokels in 1895 probably had more control over their schools than is found on the local level today. Even the length of the school year was dictated by how much money a town budgeted for elementary education each year. But there were state guidelines and the committees of 15 and 5 were responsible for determining what should be taught in which elementary grades and how many hours a week should be set aside for each subject. While commending the Committee of Fifteen for their work, the Committee of Five did not agree with all of their conclusions. Here is a brief summary of what the 1895 committees decided. As pertaining

Officers at the NH State Teachers’ Association in 1895. to English classes the “15” recommended ten reading lessons a week for the first two years of school and five lessons a week for the rest of the elementary school years. The “15” also felt that at the beginning of the fifth year, or at about age 10, the students should be given a textbook of grammar. The Committee of “5” disagreed with the “ 15”,and after a long discourse insisting that the student develop “intelligible” reading and the ability to get the sense of a sentence before undertaking the technical side of picking out “…nouns, prepositions, adverbs, etc.” They recommended a year of intense study of grammar at the age of thirteen. The Committee of Fifteen suggested that during the last year of elementary school five lessons of Latin per week be offered in place of grammar. The “ 5 ” believed “that, as conditions are in New Hampshire at this present time, this step would be inadvisable. We believe …this time should be reserved for a more careful study of English.” The two committees also

disagreed on the details of studying arithmetic. The “15” suggested sixty minutes of oral lessons during a child’s first two years of school, studies from a text-book for the next four years, and two years of Algebra before going on to high school. The “5” felt that this was impractical, pointing out “ that most pupils are not yet perfect mental machines”, and “ that pupils have been confused too much in the past by the introduction of complicated conditions; that they have been impeded in their arithmetical progress…” . Charging that the “15” viewed the “ science of numbers from the standpoint of an adult mathematician’s brain ” instead of a child’s, the “5” asked that algebra be taught in connection with arithmetic in the eighth grade. Agreement was found in the study of geography with the report of the five concentrated on making the subject interesting to the students by combining physical and political geography. They stated that See smith on 35

As we once again celebrate St. Patty’s Day, we sport our green apparel and consider heading off in search of an Irish pub nearby to hoist a pint or three. Tradition has it that Patrick was sent to Ireland by the current Pope of the time to rid the land of evil. Patrick cursed that evil into venomous snakes which plagued the area. He then drove them away from the towns and cast them into the sea where they perished. April showers may bring May flowers, but March is National Umbrella Month. While ranking high on the list of truly obscure celebrations, this “Month” can still teach us a few things – especially if we think about “umbrellas” that can help us protect our financial goals. Consider these key areas: t:PVS WVMOFSBCJMJUZ UP FNFSHFODJFT o It’s a good idea to maintain an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses. Without such a fund, you may need to dip into your longterm investments to pay for unexpected, and unexpectedly large, expenses such as a new furnace or a big bill from the doctor. You’ll want to keep your emergency fund in a liquid, low-risk account.

t:PVS GBNJMZ T ĕOBODJBM TJUVBUJPO o If something happened to you, how would your loved ones be affected? Would your family be able to stay in your house? Could your children eventually go to college? Would your surviving spouse have enough retirement income to maintain the lifestyle he or she has envisioned? Having adequate life insurance in place can help ensure that all your hopes and plans don’t fall apart upon your passing. Different types of life insurance offer different features. For example, “term” insurance, as its name suggests, is designed to provide a death benefit for a certain number of years. On the other hand, “permanent” insurance, such as whole life or universal life, can be kept in force indefinitely. This type of coverage may also offer a cash value component. t:PVS DVSSFOU JODPNF If an illness or injury keeps you out of work, even for a little while, the loss of income could disrupt your family’s ability to pay its bills, leading to potentially big problems down the

road. Your employer may offer some type of disability insurance as an employee benefit, but the coverage may be insufficient. So you may want to consider purchasing an individual disability policy.

t:PVS BCJMJUZ UP MJWF JOEFQFOEFOUMZ o If you’re fortunate, you may never need to spend time in a nursing home or require any other type of long-term care. But no one can predict the future – and it pays to be prepared, because long-term care costs can be catastrophic. In fact, the annual average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $90,000, according to the 2015 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a financial services company. A financial professional can help you find an appropriate way of paying for these types of costs. t:PVS DBQBDJUZ UP QSPUFDU ZPVS CJHHFTU BTTFUT o Your home is probably going to be the biggest asset you ever own – so you need to protect it properly, with adequate homeowners insurance. It’s also important to have sufficient insurance for your other major assets, such as your car, boat and so on. t:PVS FYQPTVSF UP QSPQFSUZ MPTT PS MJBCJMJUZ o You may someday face costs associated with repairing or replacing your home, auto or boat, or even liability-related expenses. Additional liability insurance – known as an “umbrella” policy –is designed to kick in when your standard coverage on other policies, such as home or auto, has been exhausted. The sun may be shining in your life today, but it’s always wise to be prepared for the proverbial “rainy day.” So have your umbrellas ready. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning investments, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. The value of investments fluctuates and investors can lose some or all of their principal. Special risks are inherent to international investing, including those related to currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events..

be even more difficult to survive than making their vast journeys. If no birds migrated, natural food sources in their breeding areas would be depleted very quickly and many baby chicks would starve. Competition for nesting sites would, ultimately, be extremely fierce and the population of predators would increase due to the higher concentration of breeding birds and the easy meals of the nestlings. The main reason some birds migrate is for food and nesting purposes. Each spring, natural food sources are replenished as migrating, nesting birds arrive. As the food supplies dwindle in the fall, migrating birds leave to other replenished food sources in the tropics. This cycle has served wild birds well for centuries. This blueprint of migrating for food also applies to our short range migrants as well. Known as irruptions, these unique paths of movement are also due to a lack of natural food sources. Irruptions become larger when food sources in northern regions are inadequate, forcing wild birds to search for food further south than their normal territories. A phenomenon known as fallout is just one danger migrating birds face during a long journey.

From around March-May, weather conditions periodically exist where very strong, turbulent winds and rain create the “fallout.” This naturally happens when a virulent cold front crosses the Texas coast and moves into the Gulf of Mexico during the daylight hours. The rain and wind practically stops the migrating birds, forcing them to use up most of their energy reserves. Thousands of exhausted migrating birds are forced to seek any shelter and available food when they finally reach the coastline. Without adequate, natural habitats along this important coast, tens of thousands of birds would perish each migration. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. DEAR TIM: My wife and I are faced with moving her mom to an assisted care facility. The monthly costs for this are staggering. My mother-in-law is very mobile and needs just a little help. I did the math and it seems I can make her money last for many years if we just build a granny pod house on my lot. Fortunately, I've got the room and the zoning code permits it. What's the best way to go about this so the pod adds value to, rather than detracts from, my home and property? What would you do to create the ultimate granny pod house that could be converted to something else in the future? --John M., Austin, Texas DEAR JOHN: I'm beginning to get quite a few emails like this, and it's not surprising, as mature children are faced with tough decisions concerning their parents. My sister and I had to make the same choice with my mother years ago, but we couldn't do the granny pod option. We moved mom to a very nice assisted living facility in

If you decide to go down this pathway, I can tell you that you absolutely want to get your mother-in-law involved in the planning process to some degree. You want to discover early on what is most important to her in a new home and what will bring her great satisfaction. For example, she may love indoor plants. If so, you'd want to incorporate a space that admits plenty of natural light to keep the plants happy. Perhaps she still loves to cook. In that case, be sure there's no

wasted space at all in the kitchen, and determine how much counter space she'd really like to have. Maybe she likes to sew or do crafts; if so, you need to create a convenient space to do that. Just have her make a list asking this question: "Mom, if you could wave a magic wand and create the perfect small apartment, what are the top five things it would have?" Let her ponder that for a couple of weeks if necessary. Use photos from other granny pods to stimulate ideas if necessary. I would talk to top realtors in your area and see if they anticipate future See builder on 31

Are you going to be listening to music as opposed to movies? “Music rooms need different types of speakers than a Home Theater,” said Mark. “In a Home Theater it is more about the people talking and sound effects which wouldn’t be the case in a music room.” A simple installation, such as installing a soundbar on a television, would take a day or less. Presidential March Madness “Perhaps I can summarize it best by saying this -- Nations that have pursued equality, like the Iron Curtain countries, I think have finished by Niel Young up with Advocates Columnist neither equality, nor liberty. Nations, which like us, in the past have pursued liberty, as a fundamental objective, extending it to all, have finished up with liberty, human dignity, and far fewer inequalities than other people. -- Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) British Prime Minister (1979–1990) ******** Whoa – what is this from Hannity.com Staff: It is widely accepted that American public schools are controlled by liberals. It seems like every day, we see new examples of American schoolchildren being indoctrinated with left-wing ideas. This lat-

est example was brought to our attention by a concerned parent. Kindergarten students from PS75, a public school in New York City, recently took part in a class project in which the children were made to create an American flag with the flags of other 22 other nations superimposed over the stripes. Below the flag read the words “We pledge allegiance to an International Flag. ******** From Forbes.com 3/4: Popular financial radio show host Dave Ramsey caused a firestorm on Twitter last week when he weighed in against the “fiduciary rule—the controversial pending Department of Labor regulation that would impose new restrictions on a vast swath of financial professionals who handle IRAs and 401(k) accounts. Yet, Ramsey was only echoing concerns about the costs of the rule already expressed by Members of Congress from both parties. Ramsey Tweeted, “this Obama rule will kill the Middle Class and below ability to access personal advice. A war of Tweets then broke out between opponents of the rule, and

supporters, the latter of which includes fee-based investment advisers expected to benefit from the new costs the rule will shower on their broker competitors. There is more. Dave Ramsay follows me every weekday 10-Noon wezs.com and is extremely popular. A young couple from central NH visited me during two of my shows who have used Ramsay’s advice and turned their financial lives around. This about choice in what the listeners (The Youngs) choose to listen to and be entertained by! ******** “Germany: Migrant Rape Crisis Worsens Public spaces are becoming perilous for women and children by Soeren Kern. Women, children, Rape Crisis, Migrants; what is going on over there? We are told, “Sexual violence in Germany has skyrocketed since Angela Merkel allowed more than one million mostly male migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East into the country. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, March 10, 2016 builder from 22

trends for more detached home offices or deluxe man caves -- uses to which your granny pod could be adapted. Now's the time to try to think about what the granny pod might be used for when the time comes your mother-in-law will no longer need it. You want to make the transition from her use to the future use as easy and cost-free as possible. If I had to do this now, I'd be thinking hard about how I could make this detached building look as much like my existing home as possible so the two buildings look like they were built at the same time. Think about older homes you may have seen where there was a carriage house on the property that matched the larger home. I don't think making this pod look like an oversized shed you see in the parking lots of the big box stores is a good idea. I'd try to make the floor plan as open as possible. Doing this gives you all sorts of options with respect to the future use of the pod. What's really important at this point is trying to guess correctly at the future use of the structure. If I were doing this, I'd create two ultimate floor plans, maybe three, and see how they relate to one another with respect to the overall size of each use. If the future use of the building is likely to

require 200 more square feet of space than what your mother-in-law requires, it's preferable to build the larger size now. If you're going to build this granny pod house on a concrete slab, then it's very important that you get your plumbing drain lines in the correct location for whatever you plan to do in the future. If you have the option of using a wood-floor system and can elevate the structure so that you have future access under it by crawling around, then it's not so important. You'll probably have to extend utilities to the pod underground. If so, now's the time to install blank piping for future use. You'll never regret installing an extra electrical conduit pipe as well as a 4-inch diameter schedule 40 PVC pipe that could act as a secondary drain in case something goes dreadfully wrong in the future. I'm sure your motherin-law has no interest in steps and will want everything on the first floor. If it's in the budget and your zoning will allow it, I would not hesitate to design the pod so the attic has a steep roof, and a giant dormer or multiple gable ends so the attic space can become bonus room for the future use of the pod. Never underestimate what you can do with all that extra space so long as you can design it with the minimum

height for headroom as required by the building code. Be sure you put in the best windows and doors you can afford. Make use of natural light and be sure to consider the compass orientation of the pod with respect to north and south. Plan for an outdoor garden space or a shaded patio or deck

so your mother-in-law can enjoy being outdoors in delightful weather! Need an answer? All of Tim's past columns are archived for free at www.AsktheBuilder.com. You can also watch hundreds of videos, download Quick Start Guides and more, all for free.

the bindings. My pack was heavier than usual but I shouldered it and started hiking up the Mount Tecumseh Trail. The trail was icy and thankfully the brook crossing was easy to rock hop across since there was no longer any ice on the rocks in the streambed. Since my boot’s soles seemed to grip the soft ice and bare rocks as I climbed I never bothered to put on my mirco spikes. I met at least a dozen hikers making their way back down from the summit and everyone was wearing some kind of traction on their feet. John and Pepper the dog, State Senator Jeb Bradley, Hiker Ed and more friends. Since February 29th only happens every four years,

Leap day hikes are popular and necessary to complete the 4,000 footer on every calendar day list. There are 366 calendar days and only a handful of people have stood on the summit of a 4,000 footer mountain on every day of the year. I later learned that Ed Hawkins, aka Hiker Ed, completed his 4th round of calendar days that day! Congratulations Ed. About half way up the mountain the icy trail transformed into a nice trail of packed snow. I was making good time hiking so I decided I would just put my skis on at the top. I had the open summit and its gift of a grand vista all to myself. I admired the bright white ribbon of frozen Fletcher’s Cascade and Mount Tripyramid’s North Slide. The wind picked up

Yours truly on the Sosman Trail--my ski is attached to my foot and that is the summit of Mount Tecumseh behind me. The Sosman Trail follows the ridge between Mount Tecumseh and Waterville Valley Resort’s High Country. The snow at 4,000 feet was dreamy ski-able in the woods. Numerous Leap Day hikers took advantage of the nice morning before heading to work.

distance was getting more limited as the snow fell. This was a dreamy ski along the ridge. I pine for more snow. I hope for a big snowstorm to fill Tuckerman Ravine. I want more off piste skiing. After pulling my skins off I skied down the Waterville’s machine groomed slopes.

The snow was sweet and I made big turns in the soft snow all the way down. Annually, on the last weekend of February, Waterville Valley Resort hosts the New Hampshire’s Special Olympic Winter Games. Events include Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing. I saw that

the athletes were just starting the downhill giant slalom race. I wished the sun would come back out soon for them and their families and friends. Back at the car I stowed my gear and shook off my wet jacket before heading south and back to work. I never give up hope for a big snowstorm. Have fun.

ive behavior, and that the best path available to it is to a return, in good faith, to negotiations on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.â€? The new resolution #2270 which runs 19 pages, includes an exhaustive list of embargoed materials and their transport which involve travel bans on individuals, asset freezes on banks, and surveillance of ships. North Korean raw material exports such as gold and rare earth are proscribed. Significantly, there’s no sanction on humanitarian aid to the impoverished communist country, according to diplomats. Japan’s role in framing the resolution was significant as the Japanese home islands face a clear and present danger from North Korea’s unpredictable nuclear ambitions. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon advised that “the firm response by the Security Council should put an end to the cycle of provocation and lead to the resumption of dialogue‌to reduce tensions and achieve the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.â€? When asked whether the new sanctions are an end in themselves, Angola’s Ambassador Ismael Martins who is serving as the Council’s President for March, told this writer that he encourages “the resumption of the Six Party Talksâ€? the multinational negotiating formula which could lead to the long elusive political solution. The talks, dormant during the Obama Administration, allow for transparency in dealing with the DPRK. Not surprisingly, DPRK Supreme Leader Kim Jongun, has bombastically reacted to the resolution by proclaiming that his country’s nuclear weapons should be ready for use “at any time.â€? A showdown may well be looming. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. Writing would be taught for the first six grades if the recommendations of the “15â€? were followed; the “5â€? thought it should be continued beyond the sixth year, maintaining that â€˜â€Ś in many cases the child’s

it should continue for the next two years. Making reference to “the new era in education the report also suggested that sixty minutes a week be reserved for Natural Science and Hygiene, General History, Physical Culture, Drawing, and Vocal Music. The actual writer of the report was John Henry Bartlett of the Whipple School in Portsmouth.

While most Granite State country clubs “hibernate during the winter months, LCC showed some admirable entrepreneurial spirit by setting up an indoor virtual golf league. Further, they even ran a weekend cribbage tournament to give folks more recreational options during our long winter. We should admire innovative, hard-working risk-takers.

And there were “cool advantages to February golf. Despite the dearth of snow, the pond between the third and fourth fairways remained frozen. So errant balls bounced instead of splashed. Cool, indeed! This was all in stark contrast to a year ago, when record snowfall wreaked havoc upon our golf universe. Mother Nature has a mind of her own.

Some February golfers revived the term “Global Warming, an expression recently eschewed by activists in favor of the more nebulous “Climate Change. New evidence, anecdotal and otherwise, raises questions about how much mankind can really impact the earth’s climate (see Winter of 2014-15). So when I hear activists refer to Climate Change instead of Global Warming, I take that

as an acknowledgement that man-made Global Warming might well be a canard. Yes, the climate changes—but it always has, and it always will. And on a micro level, while man can certainly pollute the Beijing air, it’s the ultimate conceit to argue that we have the power to change wind directions or ocean levels. Am I saying that I’m smarter about all this than Barack Obama, Al Gore, and Leonardo DiCaprio? Hell yes! These activists, for doleful, dubious reasons, would impose policies that would have zero impact on climate but that WOULD hurt our economy, our families, and our way of life—in the hope that we’d inspire Beijing to clean up its air. Fat chance. The warmer (hotter) air around Washington, D.C. affords President Obama opportunities to play golf year-round—opportunities denied to Granite Staters, LCC’s recent efforts notwithstanding. Bring on the warmer temps, I say. At my age, I can’t be getting chilled. And I like to play golf in the winter in New Hampshire. And if things did warm up a bit and people moved back to Greenland to live, as they did 800 years ago, then good for them. Maybe they’ll even open a golf

Senator Ted Cruz has the best track record against Trump, having beaten him in three states, even with the majority vote split among several candidates. But the Republican establishment would prefer Senator Marco Rubio, who has won only one state and is trailing in the polls in his home state of Florida. Perhaps most important of all, there are signs that -- if push comes to shove -- the Republican establishment would prefer Trump himself to Ted Cruz. Why? Because, despite Trump’s reckless rhetoric and shallow reasoning, he is a deal-maker who will not let principles stand in the way of anything that promotes the ego of Donald Trump. Senator Cruz, on the other hand, has repeatedly defied the Republican leadership in the Senate. Whatever the merits or lack of merits of his ac-

tions in particular cases, he has clearly shown himself not to be one of those who go along to get along. Former president Jimmy Carter has criticized Senator Cruz for not being “malleable.” No one was more “malleable” in the face of America’s enemies than Jimmy Carter, both when he was president and after he left office, and cozied up to Communist dictators in Cuba and North Korea. We don’t need that kind of malleability in a President of the United States. Even if we accept the criticism of Senator Cruz’s political enemies and critics that he is “opportunistic,” that charge loses some of its sting if he becomes President of the United States. What greater opportunity is there for him at that point? Becoming a great president, which is certainly what this country needs. Perhaps a political neardeath experience thus far

will sober up both Cruz and his opponents into a realization that their cooperation is the only thing that makes sense for the country. Not Spring Yet And Leap Day Hike by Amy Patenaude Outdoor/Ski Columnist

Still pining for snow. Skiers to snowmobilers and snowshoers to snowman builders—our hearts ache for snow and cold temperatures like Mother Nature gave us last winter. We want it easy. We want our backyard full of snow so we can stomp a snowshoe track between our own trees, ride on our own local snowmobile trails and ice fish on our own secret pond. We waited all winter and now the Equinox is in sight. The first day of spring is March 20th. I confess I have now given up hope for a big snowstorm but that doesn’t mean I have given up on winter snowsports. The ski

Bryan Cuddihee and yours truly took a trip to Pittsburg, NH and found where winter has been hiding. The temperature was just Zero when we started hiking down the packed snowmobile trail to reach the Magalloway fire tower and West Magalloway’s summit. Fifteen miles later when we returned to our car the temperature had risen to 26 degrees. Snowmobilers and ice fisherman were making the best of the cold temperatures and new snow.

areas are open and there is natural snow out there if you’re willing to drive way up north to find it. As I write, the resorts are still making snow to make sure we continue to have great snow conditions this spring. Don’t miss out on the fun, don’t give up. Slush pond skimming, cardboard sled races and slope side entertainment are annual spring time events. There is still lots of good skiing and riding and night skiing to be enjoyed. I finally decided to dust off my backcountry skis on Leap Day. I drove to Waterville Valley and after getting my lift ticket I returned to my car. In the parking lot I lashed my skis to the outside of my backpack with my boots clicked into See patenaudeon 32
