Mike, Capt. Jeff Waner, and “Dr. Hook” showing off a GREAT day of fishing with Osprey Adventures Guide Service. by Pete Grasso Contributing Writer

Ah……Finally a reprieve from all of this winter madness. Back last fall I did an article about my good friend Jeff Waner and his guided trips on the Salmon River (Upstate New York). I actually did a trip with him last spring and had a GREAT time. When we got together in August, I had another invitation for spring of 2014. I had originally planned for my son, Tony, to accompany me on this trip. However, his work schedule was such that it didn’t work out. I gave my friend Mike a call and he was good to go. Our plans were to drive out on Friday (2/28) and fish Saturday & Sunday (3/1 -2) and come home on Monday, depending upon the weather. Well, that didn’t work out as the weather did not want to cooperate with us. Our trip out was uneventful and interesting

to say the least. I have made that trip out there almost 30 times and 99.9% of the time turn off on exit 34-a to I-481 and on to Pulaski. However, my new (Christmas present) Garmin GPS wanted me to turn off on exit 31 (Utica). I was not really sure I wanted to deviate from the known, but the “Arrival time” appeared to indicate that this was going to be shorter. In any case, it was about 1:30 PM and we had no deadlines to meet, might as well give it a try. This route took us through the outskirts of Utica and Rome, NY. We followed Route 69, which would have taken us right into Mexico, but we turned off onto Route 13 and drove directly into Pulaski. This was not a thruway road but real fine secondary and little or no traffic. This was a good route to take if NOT hauling the boat. Oh, you could do it, but I’m really not that comfortable pulling the boat

through a lot of traffic. We arrived within 2 minutes of what the GPS gave us for an arrival time when we left Laconia. We settled into the motel, obtained our licenses and then headed to the Eis Haus, in Mexico, for a nice dinner. Great food, great service and a real fine place to relax after the long trip out. Oh, I didn’t mention all the deer we saw along the road outside of Pulaski. LOTS of deer. It is not uncommon to see 25 or 30 deer around a residence. I guess the area is all private and very little hunting allowed. I phoned Jeff and we planned to meet at the motel about 6:15 AM. Jeff was on time and we drove up and left my truck at the “Compactor”, where we intended to leave the river after drifting down from Altmar (Not sure of the name of where we actually put in). More Big WInd To The Editor: Prepare for another potential industrial wind project, Newfound! EDP Renewables is working to meet all the requirements to place a met tower in Alexandria for their proposed Spruce Ridge industrial wind project spanning the towns of Alexandria, Hebron, and Groton. This comes on the heels of Iberdrola announcing a “pause” in their Wild Meadows project planned for Alexandria and Danbury. Coincidence? I think not. Any progress a corporate entity makes benefits every other corporate entity. One might think two different industrial wind companies would be in competition with one another, but it doesn’t work that way. Instead, these corporate gi-

ants work together to keep pressure on the towns they come to invade. The more pressure they can maintain, the more effort it takes to hold them off. By working together, industrial wind developers are able to claim more community support for their projects. The math is simple yet deceptive; there are more private land leases secured by multiple industrial projects within the town, so therefore the developers claim more local “support” for the project. Newfound is not new to the deceptive ways of industrial wind companies. The project in Groton is the reason why the Wild Meadows project was put on “pause” according to the developer, Iberdrola. The “issues” with the project in Groton stem from the corporate giant making changes to their project, allegedly, without the proper approval from the proper agencies. Now they expect other Newfound towns to welcome them with open arms and believe every promise they make - and when we don’t, they say we are “misinformed”! It would seem surrounding Newfound towns have learned something from watching the town of Groton receive an industrial wind project. It seems we have learned that these corporate giants are not to be trusted. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Campaign Stuff

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I haven’t talked much lately about my run for Governor this year on the Flatlander ticket and some of my readers have been wondering if I’m still in the race. I am here to alleviate your fears (or expand them depending on your point of view). My campaign staff and me have been devising our game plan and deciding on the proper platform to run under. We have also been working hard, except for lunch, dinner, snacks and the occasional mid-afternoon movie, on empty promises and slogans we can use to bolster the campaign. We have tried to be as creative as possible since we realize it really is not about what you do, but what you say when it comes to winning elections and serving the public interest. There have been many memorable sayings in political history and we thought we could just reuse some of them, but in different forms. We had fun coming up with sayings. Some of them we couldn’t use because they really didn’t match up with our political philosophy. “Ask not what your country can do for you, but also ask your state, county and town how they can chip in to help you out” we thought would be effective for some of the big spending progressives. But we are keeping that

one under our hats Someone thought that taking the classic: “A chicken in every pot” and replacing it with “Pot in every pot” might be effective in these days of increasing marijuana legalization. Someone suggested paraphrasing Nancy Pelosi’s infamous quote on the Obamacare Bill: “You’ll have to elect me first to find out what I will do.” Even though this is a truthful statement, we realized that truth has no place in an election so we scraped it. After much consternation, whatever that means, we have come up with a few campaign promises that we are convinced will be winners. Of course, most…well all of them… are impossible for me to keep, but in politics that makes no difference, the objective is to get elected and then do whatever you want. One I will have to use soon, before people forget is: “If elected, I promise that there will not be another brutally cold and snowy winter like this one as long as I am in office.” Of course, I have about as much to do with the weather as I do with the rotation of the earth, but that really makes no difference. I can say whatever I want to get elected… those are the rules. When asked by someone in the media how I plan to make sure that we never have a winter like this again, I will say something like “Well, John (if that is his name) all of the details aren’t in place yet, but my team and I have been working hard and we should have a specific plan soon, unlike my opponent who has not even talked about working towards avoiding winters like this in the future.” If I say this just right,

my hope is that the reporter will then turn to my opponent and ask. “How do you respond to that, do you have a plan in mind when it comes to winter?” That’s sure to catch them off guard. We realize that this campaign promise will only be effective until about May when the warm weather creeps in and people start complaining about the heat. The voting public is fickle and forgets easily. We have other promises as well that we will unveil as the campaign moves along. I certainly don’t want to expose them all here and give my opponents an advantage. We will wait and see what the political climate is at different stages before we go ahead and make our promises. Back in 2006, when I ran for Governor, I did unveil my “Vote For Me And Win A Big TV’ campaign where anyone who wrote in my name for Governor simply had to take a picture with their cell phone of the ballot and email it to me and the day after election day one was randomly picked to win a 56-inch HD TV. We are certain that with the advances in cell phones over the years, this might be worth bringing back for another try, maybe we’ll throw in a tablet to sweeten the take. So, for those of you who were concerned, we are moving forward in our campaign and you should be hearing a lot more from me in the coming months. I won’t let you down. I promise. From The State House Medicaid Expansion Principles vs. Progressivism In a vote which is sure to rear its ugly head come election time, the NH State Senate voted to expand Medicaid in the Granite by Rep. Jane State this past Cormier week. There Belknap District 8 has been a major battle raging over Medicaid here in NH. But, this battle has now expanded into the heart, soul, and identity of the Republican Party. The following Republican Senators voted for Medicaid Expansion in NH: Senate President, Chuck Morse, Sen. Jeb Bradley, Sen. David Boutin, Sen. Nancy Stiles, Sen. Bob Odell, Sen. Rausch, and Sen. Jeanie Forrester. Wow…can you say PRIMARY? The NH Republican Party Platform is a document which embraces small government,

low taxation, natural rights, and state sovereignty. There have been many recent votes in the Republican Party (both in the NH House AND Senate) which have not embraced this conservative platform nearly enough. The Senate plan for Medicaid Expansion is just the largest anti-platform vote so far. And the Gas Tax (thank Sen. Rausch for this one) which looms ahead could be the next. The talking points of the Progressives (which are obviously in both parties) are that Medicaid is a cure all for those who do not have health insurance. Some Republicans in NH Senate told us that taking the millions of dollars of “free” money from the federal government would go to “private” health insurers. Really? How’s that going to work anyway? Our NH Senate did no fiscal study/note, no estimate of possible enrollment numbers,

Eat Your Own Words, Debbie Wasserman Schultz At the end of 2013, Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had some nasty words for yours truly. Irked that I by Michelle Malkin used my TwitSyndicated Columnist ter feed to criticize her Obamacare propaganda efforts, Wasserman Schultz snarked back at me: “Thanks for spreading the word! You’ll be eating them next year. #GetCovered.” Classy as always. And completely wrong-headed as usual. Less than three months into 2014, how’s dutiful Debbie and her Dear Leader’s pet government takeover program doing? The most recent retreat measures -- call it the Obamacare Endangered 2014 Midterm Democrats’ Rescue Plan -- include: --Allowing insurers for two extra years to continue selling plans that otherwise would have been banned by Obamacare. Last fall, Americans across the country and from all parts of the political spectrum raised an uproar in the wake of millions of Obamacareinduced cancellation notices on their individual market health plans. President Obama trotted out a “keep your plan” Band-Aid effective through this year. Now, the “transitional period” will extend through October 2016 and cover policyholders until the following September, after Obama is safely out of office. --Extending the open enrollment period for 2015 from November 2014 to February 2015, a month longer than originally scheduled. (It will no doubt be

extended again as the midterm elections get closer.) --Relaxing eligibility requirements for insurers to qualify for financial help under a three-year program intended to cushion insurers’ costs of complying with Obamacare mandates. --Exempting labor unions, universities and other self-insured employers from paying a fee that creates the above-noted fund. In addition, the White House last month allowed mediumsized employers an extra year to comply with the Obamacare mandate to offer insurance to all full-time workers and reduced the percentage of workers that large companies are required to cover. These latest regulatory walk-backs by administrative fiat all come on the heels of dozens of administrative delays and rollbacks. While Democrats complain about Republican Obamacare repeal efforts, we may be nearing a special inflection point at which the White House will have reneged on more Obamacare regulations than it’s actually enforcing! Remember: In November 2010, the White House began issuing thousands of waivers to unions, cronies, businesses and organizations that offered affordable health insurance or prescription drug coverage with limited benefits outlawed by Obamacare. The federalized health care architects had sought to eliminate those low-cost plans under the guise of controlling insurer spending on executive salaries and marketing. Despite the waivers, the mandate has led to untold disruptions in the marketplace and has prompted businesses to cancel the beneficial plans altogether

The Crimean War UNITED NATIONS—Less than a week after the spectacular closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics, Russian Presiby John J. Metzler dent Vladimir Syndicated Columnist Putin decided for an encore and invaded the sovereignty of neighboring Ukraine. The chill winds of the Cold War have returned to Europe and the halls of diplomacy. Taking advantage of Ukraine’s civil and political unrest which had toppled the ruling proRussian regime in Kiev, allegedly causing anxiety among Russian ethnic minorities in parts of this vast land, Putin decided to settle the conflict the old fashioned way; military intervention. Russian forces, operating from pre-existing and treaty sanctioned naval and air bases in the strategic Crimean peninsula, rapidly deployed to blockade Ukrainian military facilities and seize airports. Crimea has a majority ethnic Russian population which appears to welcome Moscow’s embrace. Significantly it hosts the Russian fleet’s only warm water ports. A visibly shaken Ukrainian UN Ambassador Yuri Sergeyev briefed the Security Council and later correspondents to denounced the fast deteriorating situation in his country as Russian aggression. Ukraine which was part of the former Soviet Union, gained its independence in 1991 after the fall of the communist regime in Moscow. In late 2013, while the Ukrainian majority rallied in favor of closer economic integration with the European Union, the ruling pro-Russian regime tilted closer to Moscow, thus setting off the crisis. Intense diplomacy by Germany and Poland tried to bridge the gap between the two political camps to little avail. But an obscene verbal quip by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, a pro who does know better, in a monitored phone call in Kiev to “F__ the EU” (European Union), caused a major embarrassment and a damage

control problem between Washington and the Europeans, when the focus should have been on deterring Moscow’s impending moves. The overthrow of Ukraine’s corrupt President Viktor Yanukovych by a wide range of dissidents was the last straw as far as Putin was concerned. So is Vladimir Putin gambling or playing political chess in Ukraine? Since the times of Catherine the Great, Crimea has been a vital strategic Russian asset on the southern flank facing the Ottoman Turks. The region was the scene of the bloody Crimean War in the 1850’s which pitted the massed armies of Britain, France and Turkey against Czarist Russia. Putin plays by an historic and neo-nationalistic rulebook— Russian nostalgia and retro Soviet swag are mixed with ruthless realpolitik politics. Many of Ukraine’s problems are rooted in Soviet era policy. In 1954, almost to the day of the current crisis, former Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev gave Russian Crimea to Ukraine. Equally in the wake of WWII, Stalin dismembered large parts of eastern Poland and ceded the territory to Ukraine. Today these same regions form a core of the pro-European parts of the country. Ironically, the Soviet postwar political cartography set a time bomb which threatens all sides. Thus, modern Ukraine is pulled between the majority who face West towards Europe and are Catholic versus the large Russian speaking and Orthodox minority in the East who look towards Moscow. Crimea clearly is in the Russian sphere of influence, and on this reality Putin plays his ethno/political cards. Ukraine’s Ambassador Sergeyev warned that the Russians may be trying to break off Crimea from Ukrainian sovereignty as Moscow did in the Georgia War in 2008, in which two “Russian ethnic” enclaves were seized from Georgia and set up as “independent republics.” The Ambassador called for the international community to provide “moral and political support “ for a free Ukraine. Responding to the political

theatrics of “an endangered Russian community” in Crimea, Putin’s plans to set up an “enclave Republic.” A planned “referendum” on whether Crimea should join Russia has been condemned by the USA and the

European Union. A second scenario emerges; will Putin then look to a “threatened minority” in the eastern Ukraine and try to revive a new version of the old Ukraine SSR? A nightmare sce-

Freedom Is Not Free There may be something to the claim that all people want to be free. But it is a demonstrable fact that freedom has been under attack, by Thomas Sowell usually sucSyndicated Columnist cessfully, for thousands of years. The Federal Communications Commission’s recent plan to have a “study” of how editorial decisions are made in the media, placing FCC bureaucrats in editorial offices across the country, was one of the boldest assaults on freedom of the press. Fortunately, there was enough backlash to force the FCC to back off. With all the sweeping powers available to government, displeasing FCC bureaucrats in editorial offices could have brought on armies of “safety” inspectors from OSHA, audits from the Internal Revenue Ser-

vice and many other harassments from many other government agencies. Such tactics have become especially common in this administration, which has the morals of thugs and the agenda of totalitarians. They may not be consciously aiming at creating a totalitarian state, but shameless use of government power to crush those who get in their way can produce totalitarian end results. The prosecution of Dinesh D’Souza for contributing $20,000 to a political candidate, supposedly in violation of the many campaign finance laws, is a classic case of selective prosecution. Thugs who stationed themselves outside a polling place in Philadelphia to intimidate white voters were given a pass, and others accused of campaign finance violations were charged with misdemeanors, but Dinesh D’Souza has been charged with felonies that carry penalties of years in federal prison. Here are some additional tips to get you started: • Visit a Store: Before

you take the trip down the aisle, take a trip down the aisle of the store where you are registered. Missed something the first time around? No problem. Many stores make the process convenient, allowing you to update the registry at any point, both in-store and online. Be sure to get up close and personal with the items that go on your registry. Touch the towels, hold the cookware -in fact, most brides make multiple visits to a store and the website. • Keep it Convenient: Where you register is important. Ask friends, family and co-workers about their registry experiences. Start a wedding registry as soon as you say “yes.â€? That way, guests have options for engagement gifts and showers. jump. Shiffrin, the youngest Olympic Slalom gold medalist ever, may now call East Burke, Vermont, home but she made her start right here on this hill. I imagined her riding the Poma and skiing their two trails over and over. This wasn’t hard to do because every where I looked there were future champions skiing and riding like they were the greatest on earth! From the lift I watched a little boy launch over a bump and land on his tips which resulted in large

yard sale. By the time I skied down to him he was still gathering his equipment. I asked him if I could help him get his skis back on and he looked me in the eye and answered “Maybe! The snow was good and I had a fun time yo-yoing; up the Poma and back down repeat! Lift tickets are a bargain, just $7 for under age 16 and $10 for everyone else! Q Burke Only Vermont has two resorts whose name begins with the letter Q--Quechee and now Q Burke in Burke. The ski resort’s name was formally changed last year to Q Burke Mountain Resort to represent the new ownership and management by the Quiros family. Inside the Sherburne Base Lodge there was an Olympic atmosphere, small flags of many ski nations hung in the lobby and a “Congratulations Mikaela Shiffrin sign hung above a large photograph of their local Olympic Champion. Q Burke is the home of Burke Mountain Academy and according to their website “Burke Mountain

She had won a World Championship before graduating from the BMA last June! We rode the Sherburne Express Quad to the top of the lower mountain. The lower mountain feels like a separate bunny hill! From here it was just a short traverse over to the Mid Burke Lodge and the Mid Burke Express Quad that rises fast to the summit (this high speed quad was just

installed three years ago). Burke has an impressive 2,011 feet of vertical drop. The lift passes near the Poma lift and lots of kids were taking part in a giant slalom taking place on the adjacent Warren’s Way Trail. The Poma lift is used to transport racers up the hill and keeps these speed demons out of the regular lift lines. We set our ski tips straight down Upper Willoughby and schussed to the bottom. What a super trail and the snow conditions were dreamy. We didn’t make first tracks but on this Sunday morning there didn’t seem to be a crowd. This got me calcuSee patenaude on 11

lating in my head about the lack of crowds certainly being worth the 50 minute drive from Franconia. Burke’s trails are fun to ski and many of them are wide, level and shoot straight down the fall line. I loved making big fast turns down Big Dipper! From the summit there are no green circle rated trails but the easiest trail, Deer Run, follows the auto road down the mountain with its serpentine turns. At lunchtime we chose to stay away from the Mid Burke Lodge since it was filled to the brim with ski

racing children. The trip back down to the Sherburne Lodge was easy and we were rewarded with a quiet lodge. We got a slope side table right next to the window in the Tamerack Pub and Grill. The food was good, I ate Shepard’s Pie made with local fare and my friend had a turkey burger with fries. The experience was so civilized and delightful I want to go back again soon. We were totally entertained by watching the novices on the carpet lift and the J-bar. The resort’s mascot, a big bear was outside playing with the children too.

We continued to ski all over the mountain. We went down the East Bowl and yes we had to double pole and skate to get back to the lift. I did jump into one of their famous glades. Burke has lots of gladed terrain, there are easily over a 100 acres. By the size and quantity of bumps the skiers and snow boarders spend as much time in the trees as they do on the trails. On our last run we watched the coaches pull the race gates off the trail. The children were all gathered in front of the lodge for awards. I thought of Shif-

Franklin Veterans Memorial Ski Area – Another Volunteer Run Operation As mentioned in Amy’s column this week, Storrs Hill Ski Area is volunteer driven. Another great, and little known ski area in New Hampshire is the Franklin Veterans Ski Area in Franklin, New Hampshire. In the 1930s, Dr, Ervin Drake donated 400 acres of land called The Great Gains Forest to the City of Franklin. In 1960, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed the ski area for the city on the land. The same year the development of the ski area was turned over to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Many city volunteers and businesses became involved in the development. In January of 1961, the

Franklin Outing Club was formed to help with the development. The Outing Club provided free ski lessons to children as well as acting as the ski patrol. In 1962, the Great Gains Ski Area officially opened. In April of that year, the Franklin City Council authorized a $4,000 Veteran’s Memorial Fund to be used to construct a lodge at the ski area as a memorial to those who gave

their lives in WWII and the Korean War. The area was to be known as the Franklin Veteran’s Memorial Recreation Area. In September of 1963, the City of Franklin turned over operation of the ski area and facilities to the Franklin Outing Club. Today the Franklin Outing Club continues to operate the ski area allowing affordable skiing for families, free skating, free snowmobile and crosscountry skiing trails. Today the ski area is maintained by the volunteer efforts of some 85 area families. The volunteers pay the same rate to ski as non-volunteers. The Franklin Veterans Ski Area is open Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm as long as there is snow.

Bodefest Olympic champion Bode Miller will be returning home April 5th to Cannon Mountain for his Turtle Ridge Foundation’s annual fundraiser. A fun race for kids, a silent and live auction for the adults and getting to see Bode ski highlights the event. Bodefest registration information can be found at cannonmt. com. Have Fun.

nal plan was to drift to “Pineville” and take out there. However, since the weather was to be good and we had decided to only fish on Saturday (that’s another story), we were going to fish a bit more of the river (so we thought). The long and short of it was that they had decreased the flow of water into the river, which went down about 10” rendering a float to the compactor somewhat in question. As it turned out we were having such good luck at the upper holes, it was after 4 PM when we got to Pineville. Jeff retrieved his truck; we loaded the boat and picked up my truck on the way out. Well, enough about the traveling…….How about the fishing? It was nothing short of FANTASTIC. We float fished egg sacks and #12 hooks. Yikes, they are small. We also stopped a couple of times and did a couple of holes back trolling with plugs (Hot Shots). I had a fish on in the first half-hour and was having a great time “Playing” it. Getting it to the boat and letting it run. Once it turned in the water and I got a look at

Mike & Jeff were chewing my butt out for not bringing it within netting distance. When I finally did, the hook pulled out and I lost the fish. Oh well, I had a good time with it. Jeff hooked up a couple and let Mike bring them in. I kidded him that he needed to catch one “On his own”. Finally he did

and ended up out fishing me for the day. We both lost a few, but it’s called fishing, not catching!. The largest steelhead came on one of the Hot Shots (a green pirate) and that was really a comedy. We had set up just above a nice pool. There were a couple of others, fishing from the bank, below us and two others that were taking a break.

We were only there a few short minutes when the center rod (we drift 5 rods into the pool) and the far left rod fired. Mike grabbed the left rod & I grabbed the center. We all thought we had a “Double” going. I was hooked up, for sure, and was too busy to pay attention to what Mike was doing. When I looked over, he was squawk-

ing about a tangle and I noted his lure hooked over my line. Just about that time, my line went slack and we all figured I had lost the fish. Jeff came forward to clear up the tangle and I gave him some slack line to work with. He almost had Mike free from my line (this took a couple of minutes) when all of a sudden my line went taut again. This yanked the lure, which was set up with treble hooks, out of Jeff’s hands and across the back of his neck. All I could think of was him getting that impaled in his neck or face. He quickly ducked, cut the lure off and the battle was on. When we finally got that fish to the net, it was a big 15 pound male and ended up being the fish of the day. We both caught a few more before finally calling it a day. The fish ranged from a little over 5 right up to 15 pounds. You are allowed to keep one fish that is 21” or over. I kept the 15 pounder and Mike kept a nice 10 pounder. If you have never done this kind of fishing, you HAVE to try it once. Spring steelhead is a great trip, but weather can make or break you. Jeff has two heaters in the boat and that really helps on the colder days, for sure. A river trip in the fall is also a good bet and the bonus is that during this time of the years, the king salmon are also in the river. You can not only hook up with a nice steelie, but also a hefty king salmon. I’m talking fish in the 20 to 30+ pound category here. The “Go To” guy here is Jeff Waner, Osprey Adventures Guide Service. Read, Observe, Talk, While We Still Have The “First Amendment N E X T M E E T ING: Lakes R e g i o n Tea Party Wednesday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. Moultonborough by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Public Library – All are welcome to join us for updates on local state and federal government activity. We will also be watching more of the video on the Constitution. For more information, contact Hal or Peggy Graham at halpeg76@metrocast.net. ********* Bill O’Reilly Thursday 3/6 says all presidents are PATRIOTS. That bumkisser should not mention “the No Spin Zone. Here is Dictionary.com (Patriot): 1. a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. 2. a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government. What adjective describes Barack Hussein Obama? Only an Obama Zombie would find one word that applies to Obama. I cannot. ******** BARACK OBAMA: I am absolutely confident that you will see millions of people benefit from this law. It doesn’t mean that at some point there won’t be some additional problems, or improvements that we can make. At this point, I think actually it is working the way it should, what we need to do is after the first year, we evaluate what the pool looks like, can we make sure that we’re keeping the premiums low. Are there more people that look like we could potentially cover through other mechanisms

reaching those who are still uninsured? http:// www.realclearpolitics. com/video/2014/03/06/ obama ******** In seeking additional sponsors (local and statewide) to have their message heard exclusively during my 9 hours per week radio talk show last week I had one owner tell me “your show is ‘too confrontational’. Some of our advertisers have been with us since program number one. Now in our 18th year, those who think we are “too confrontational can be counted on 3 fingers. So, here is the bottom line: Our longtime sponsors are small businesses in central NH, do you believe that they are interested in customers who are listening, or what is drawing them to listen? How have we lasted all of these years if not for our advertisers seeing results? Why do free daily and weekly publications survive? People want to hold the paper in their hands as they read the news. Why do you believe The Letters to the Editor is one major reason? How many readers post comments following a news report or Opinion editorial on-line? Sometimes the comments seem to go on forever in The NH Union Leader, why? Readers/ listeners (customers) want that outlet to consider what others are thinking! How many other locally produced talk shows can boast of the caliber of nationally known special guests, callers, and roundtable panelists I have? Joann from Athens, Ohio found my show while looking for Roger Hedgecock online. Savage, Monica Crowley, Roger, and I at WEZS 1350 and streamed live at wezs.com. Rush Limbaugh and others sell advertising, as I do. What

do we have in common? Opinionated, confrontational at times, listeners who hunger for issues and answers, and, especially mine, some want time to express their feelings to other listeners. Since January 1997 my radio talk show “The Advocates is where the airtime is owned by me. We started at 1 hour on Saturdays. Today we are still broadcasting from WEZS 1350 and streamed to the world at wezs.com 9 hours each week. We have listeners and callers from points in NH, and other states as well. On Saturday when people are awakening and hungry for news and discussion of current events I am a place for them to voice their opinions or questions. And some government funded network; hit the snooze button. ******** I continue to read the words of Tim Sullivan RGilford and the more I read there is constant; Tim is fabricating a narrative about me. Lying is expected from those who know not what they speak of! Tim: “So Niel is just not willing to embrace any strategy either for broadening the appeal of the GOP brand or to actually win any elections. And that is how it has to be if the electorate mostly rejects the 100 percent ideology of Niel Young, and would only like a couple slices. We in the GOP must not be allowed to contemplate winning any elections until the broader electorate is made to believe what he believes! Why Tim, do you see me as being that influential? Are you one of those elite republicans who will throw principles aside to win elections? I will have more next week.

Recent surveys show that the bathroom has overtaken the kitchen as the most frequently remodeled part of the home. But unless your plumbing is wanting or your tile is intolerable, you can often beautify the bath simply by painting it. “In a lot a cases, people remodel the bathroom not for functional reasons, but just to change and enhance the appearance. If that’s the goal, it can almost always be achieved with an attractive paint treatment, says Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert for the Paint Quality Institute. Fresh paint can enhance any room, but it can work wonders in the bathroom. Applying a light-colored

paint scheme can “open up the room and make it seem more spacious. Darker paint colors do just the opposite: reduce the scale and add coziness. Aside from lightness or darkness, there are psychological considerations when choosing paint color for the bathroom. Tints and tones of yellow, orange and red, even including some browns and tans, are “warm colors, which tend to awaken the senses -- helpful in the morning, but not at night. Conversely, “cool colors, especially greens and blues, are calm and relaxing, perfect for soothing frayed nerves before bedtime. Warm and cool paint colors can also affect our perception of room temperature. Since we associate yellow and orange with the sun, we may “feel warmer when surrounded by these hues, whereas a blue or green space can

seem cooler. As a result, warm colors are often favored in colder climes, and cool colors in the Sunbelt. But color isn’t the only thing to consider when painting a bathroom. The typical bathroom is exposed to water, high humidity, and significant wear and tear. For that reason, it’s important to select paint that produces a finish tough enough to stand up to these conditions. Until recently, that meant applying a coat of latex primer, followed by two or even more coats of top quality 100% acrylic latex paint. But today, there’s a quicker and easier way to complete your bathroom painting by using new “paint and primer products. Paint and primer products - also known as selfpriming paints - are coatings with a dual personality. Like primer, they See painting on 22

We Can Do It All!

by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: This has been the winter from Hades. I own a house in Connecticut and my parents have one in sunny Florida. The ice and snow has ravaged my front sidewalk, and the concrete patio at the Florida home could use a makeover. I attended a spring home show this weekend and saw a demonstration of a concrete resurfacing product that looked too good to be true. Is there really a product you can apply to concrete to restore its original beauty? Can this same product really be colorized and used to create artwork on my concrete that will last the test of time? --Jenny P., Hartford, Conn. DEAR JENNY: I’ve seen some wild and crazy things at home shows over the years. Believe me there are still hucksters at some of these shows, supported by their cunning shills in the audience. The good news is if what you saw is the same product I saw a month ago at a trade show you’re going to be one happy homeowner. The product I saw is a

You can use this same product to create driveway or sidewalk tattoos, as my friend Dan Gray calls them! If you have some patience, a small amount of skill, an air compressor and a small spray gun, only your imagination will hinder what you can do with your sidewalk, driveway or patio! I’ve seen my share of concrete that’s suffered from snow, ice and normal erosion as well as sun-baked concrete that’s covered with algae, mold and mildew. If the concrete is still structurally sound, you can apply a thin overlay that will bond well and give

the concrete new life and many years of extended service. This can save you and your parents big money. I consider concrete to be structurally sound if it’s just exhibiting light surface spalling. If you do have one or two cracks that have separated, you can apply modern epoxies to bind the slab together. A cracked concrete slab is not a death sentence -- not anymore. Severely cracked and crumbling concrete, or slabs that have large offsets where one piece is higher than the other, may be too far gone to save with just a simple overlay. dirty, moldy and covered with algae can often be restored with just a simple cleaning. Pressure washers are great for this type of work. If you don’t own one, you can rent a machine for a day or use oxygen bleach and a scrub brush on a pole. Never use chlorine bleach to clean an outdoor concrete surface, as the toxic chemical will poison any nearby grass, landscaping or trees. Using the concrete overlay products is easy. The key thing is to read the instructions and make sure the concrete is perfectly clean, free from dust and grease, and all loose particles are washed or brushed away. I would absolutely use a pressure washer to prepare a concrete slab for an overlay. You may feel it’s best to do this work on a sunny, breezy warm day. In my opinion, that’s the worst weather. Overcast days with temperatures in the 55-65 F range are the best. You want the thin overlay to dry slowly and cure well so it bonds permanently to the old concrete. If you decide to create colored patterns, artwork or pictures on your concrete, consider doing this on areas of your concrete that will never experience any shovels, plows or other scrapping tools. You don’t want to ruin your artwork with these tools. You can add many colors to the overlay materials. Powdered colorfast pigments are just added to the water you use to mix the overlay. It’s very simple and the colors will take your breath away they’re so gorgeous. If you decide to tattoo

your concrete, I urge you to practice first. Test your skills applying the sprayed overlay onto pieces of drywall you’ve laid out on your existing concrete. Place sheets of plastic vapor barrier down under the drywall and around the edges of your existing concrete to protect it from overspray. Once you get the technique down, then you can do the real thing on your concrete. Try a small piece of art first before advancing to a large image. For ideas, think about creating something about your favorite hobby, a flower, or any other image that makes you feel happy. Be sure you plan its placement so it’s visible after any patio furniture is placed back on the patio. If you want to watch a video of professionals showing how to apply the overlay and create artwork, just go to this page of my website. conceal the existing paint color and minor blemishes on the painted surface; like paint, they form a tough, colorful finish that is stain-resistant and washable. Rather than taking the traditional approach by applying successive coats of primer, paint, and paint, you usually need to apply just two coats of a paint and primer product, thereby eliminating an entire application -- saving lots of time and effort in the process. To get the best result when painting a demanding area like the bathroom, it’s wise to choose a paint and primer product that will produce a semi-gloss or high gloss finish. The higher the sheen, the easier it will be to remove any marks or stains that find their way onto the painted surface.

AUTOMATIC HOME STANDBY GENERATORS

“It’s also very important to choose a paint and primer product made with 100% acrylic, the same tough binder used in the highest quality traditional paints, says Zimmer. “Paint and primer made with 100% acrylic offers the best hiding and forms the most durable painted surface. These are especially important characteristics when doing bathroom painting, she says. If you want to give your bathroom an entirely new appearance this year, maybe all you really need is a colorful new paint treatment. It’s a quick and easy way to enhance and beautify one of the most important rooms in your home. Castles In The Sky

AUTHENTIC WOOD FURNITURE

by Steve White Contributing Writer

Early America Indians learned the value of having purple martins in their village as a natural bug eliminator. Hollow gourds were hung near teepees in multiple locations to ward off the pesky insects. European settlers copied these methods by constructing wooden houses with multiple holes for maximum mosquito protection during the summer months. The clearing of farmland and rapid urbanization in the United States eliminated thousands of natural nesting sites which led to the decline in purple martin populations. Fifty years ago, J.L. Wade launched a program to educate the public about the benefit of providing purple martin houses in towns and cities to combat mosquitoes without the customary spraying that was standard in many metropolitan areas. The Nature Society was formed in Griggsville, Illinois which can now proclaim itself as the purple martin capital of the world. Martin migration starts from Brazil around late January, depending on which part of the Northern Continent you live in. Mature male birds, known as scouts, usually are the first to reach their proven breeding grounds from the previous year. Legend has it that these scouts determine the food supply and housing in an existing area and fly back to South America to guide the return of the flock. In reality, the first arrivals

Purple martins build nests from a collection of small twigs, pine needles, straw, leaves and mud. Adult females lay 5-6 eggs which usually hatch about 14 days later. Most of these babies fledge in approximately one month, quickly perfecting their famous flying and insectcatching skills. By late summer the purple martins will begin to congregate in staging areas near large bodies of water. Martins tend to drift southward each day and will eventually combine with other flocks that are also heading in that direction. Concentrations of up to 100,000 birds have been recorded during this stage of migration. The purple martin is

the only bird species east of the Rockies that depends almost exclusively on humans for its housing. Martins will nest in almost any properly deSee white on 27

nario sees Putin expanding to the Western parts of Ukraine. So do we see salami tactics or the clear clarion call of historic irredentism? But the crisis comes amid the perception of American strategic ambivalence and foreign policy fuzziness concerning Russia and Central Europe for that matter. Few in the Obama Administration know or understand the streams of Russian history. Remember former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s celebrated “Reset with Russia Policy in 2009? Beyond the wishful sentiments, and the stage prop red reset button, even the linguistic translation was clumsy. The USA and the European Union must make a clear and convincing case to Russia that serious economic and commercial sanctions will follow any “reset of Ukraine’s borders and its territorial integrity. and no rough estimate of cost to our state. I understand the Senate plan is based on the Arkansas Medicaid Expansion plan. And their costs are much higher than projected. Arkansas is facing a shortfall of $16 million dollars – not good news for the taxpayers in Arkansas. Yet, our NH Senate forged ahead anyway. One is left to wonder, WHY? The NH Senate also tells us the Federal government will “fund this expansion, but should the Feds renege on their promise to fund the expansion as agreed, the program will just stop. POOF – those 50,000 supposed citizens who were given the subsidy will no longer have health insurance. (I am sure this will go over well.) However, many believe when the Federal Free Money Spigot is shut off, (and it WILL shut off, make no mistake), NH will be left with a State Income Tax to fund this subsidy. Isn’t that great? I believe Progressives hope for this every day. Progressives and taxation go together like bread and butter. But, getting back to the debacle facing the Republican Party, I will say this. This debate is not a negative thing. Pundits will make news saying

“the party is breaking apart. Hogwash. Debate is healthy. Following the “leader may be the norm, but it is not good for a Constitutional Republic. The conservative majority in the Republican Party (and yes, I DO believe the base of the Republican Party in NH runs right of center) need to stand up and fight for their platform. We have to stand and support CONSERVATIVE candidates and causes. Vet your candidates. Tell them your expectations. Do NOT support Republicans who do not follow the major planks of the Republican Platform. If your candidate votes against the 2nd Amendment, that is a major plank. If your candidate supports government controlled education that is Common Core, that is a major plank issue. If your candidate continues to vote/support bigger government, well, that is a major plank issue. Tell them, you will NOT support them. Make your voices heard. This may not be a comfortable debate, but it IS a necessary one. Progressivism is killing the essence of what it means to be American. We can no longer think in the mindset of Republican vs. Democrat. The game has shifted. We need to think Progressive vs. Conservative. If we make our voices heard, I truly believe we can eventually get back on the right track. But, we will not get there doing the same old thing, playing the same old game. Principles are what our founding documents are all about. It is now time to stand on PRINCIPLE. Because principles really DO matter - never more than now!

and/or slash wages and work hours. In April 2011, Obama signed a bipartisanbacked law repealing his own onerous $22 billion Obamacare 1099 taxcompliance mandate that would have destroyed small businesses inundated with pointless paperwork. Last March, with the support of several key Democrats, the Senate voted to repeal the Obamacare medical device tax. But the vote has not been enforced. Device makers have cut back on research and development. And according to the medical device manufacturers industry group AdvaMed, the punitive tax has forced companies to lay off or avoid hiring at least 33,000 workers over the past year. In December and Janu-

ary, when Wasserman Schultz was busy acting like a 2-year-old in response to Obamacare critics, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was busy: --Delaying premium payment deadlines. --Delaying high-risk insurance pool cancellations. --Delaying equal coverage mandates that force companies to drop health benefits rewards for top executives. --Delaying onerous “meaningful use” mandates on health providers grappling with Obamacare’s disastrous top-down electronic medical records rules. While Wasserman Schultz defiantly claims all Democrats will proudly run on health care in 2014 and 2016, endangered Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina was caught on cam-

era just last week literally running away from a journalist who dared to ask her about the 24 times she falsely promised that if you liked your plan, you could keep it under Obama. It’s not just Hagan; every vulnerable Senate Democrat who rammed Obamacare down America’s throat is now running for the hills. When the White House now talks about the “Get Covered” campaign, it’s not about ordinary Americans getting health care. It’s about covering the backsides of the Obama water-carriers who may very well lose their jobs. They’re not just eating their words. They’re choking on Obamacare’s massive, inevitable, jobkilling, life-threatening failures. I’d like to tell bratty Wasserman Schultz that Obamacare critics will have the last laugh. But we’re too busy weeping at the senseless government-induced wreckage around us. All of this is over a campaign contribution that is chicken feed, compared to what can be raised inside of an hour at a political fundraising breakfast or lunch. Could this singling out of D’Souza for prosecution have something to do with the fact that he made a documentary movie with devastating exposures of Barack Obama’s ideologies and policies? That movie, incidentally, is titled “2016: Obama’s America,” and every American should get a copy of it on a DVD. It will be the best $10 investment you are ever likely to make. It doesn’t matter what rights you have under the Constitution of the United States, if the government can punish you for exercising those rights. And it doesn’t matter what limits the Constitution puts on government officials’ power, if they can exceed those limits without any adverse consequences. In other words, the Constitution cannot protect you, if you don’t protect the Constitution with your votes against anyone who violates it. Those government officials who want more power are not going to stop unless they get stopped. As long as millions of Americans vote on the basis of who gives them free stuff, look for their freedom -- and all our freedom -- to be eroded away, bit by bit. Our children and grandchildren may yet come to see the Constitution as just some quaint words from the past that people once took seriously. The arrogance of arbitrary power is not confined to the federal government. An egregious case in Massachusetts involves a teenage girl from Connecticut named Justina Pelletier, who was being treated for a rare disease by doctors at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. When her parents brought this 15-year-old girl to an emergency room in Boston, the doctors

there decided that her problem was not medical but psychological. When the parents objected, and sought to take her back to the doctors who had been treating her at Tufts University, the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families charged the parents with “medical child abuse,” and were granted legal custody of the teenager. Once given arbitrary power over Justina, the DCF bureaucrats kept her all but isolated from her parents for more than a year. To add insult to injury, a judge issued a gag order, forbidding the parents from discussing the case publicly. Only after Megyn Kelly on the Fox News Channel brought this case to national attention did the Massachusetts bureaucrats back off and turn the teenager’s medical care back to the doctors at Tufts University. Whether her parents will get to see their daughter freely again is still up in the air. Arbitrary power is ugly and vicious, regardless of what pious rhetoric goes with it. Freedom is not free. You have to fight for it or lose it. But is our generation up to fighting for it? Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. Fender-endorsed frontman Brooks Young works the guitar like his idol Eric Clapton and belts out solos in a style reminiscent of Mick Jagger. The Concord NH-based Brooks Young Band delivers the perfect combination of rock, pop and blues. The band plays venues from Boston to New York and Nashville and has shared the stage with legends such as Ted Nugent, James Cotton, Pat Benetar, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and King of the Blues B.B. King. Along with Brooks Young are Jeff Leroy (Piano/Organ/Vocals), Dave Lombard (Drums), Matt McDermott (Bass/Vocals) and Andy Devine (Guitar/Vocals).
