Indoor Triathlon Is Another Big Success The 11th Annual Saving Animals Indoor Triathlon held at the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in Weirs Beach on Saturday, March 14th, raised over $28,000 for the New Hampshire Humane Society. That brings its eleven year total to over $100,000. Twenty-nine teams of four players took part in the triathlon, which really consisted of five events: bowling, skee-ball, darts, pinball and mini-golf. The mini-golf was the newest addition to the contest as this year it was played on

Funspot’s brand new, 18hole indoor mini-golf which was recently completed in a new 5,500 square foot area. With many of the original Landmarks Of New Hampshire ornaments that were part of Funspot’s popular outdoor mini-golf since the 1960s now refurbished, the new indoor mini-golf proved to be the most popular of the triathlon events this year. “It was the first time anyone has ever played on the new mini-golf and we heard nothing but raves See triathlon on 8

If things had gone differently when Matt Porter was younger he may have been working in a completely different field but the same determination would have most likely led him to the same success he has today with his business, Porter Heating and Cooling. “When I was in high school I actually wanted to go into auto mechanics at the Voc Tech but that section was too full,” said Porter. “They told me they had plumbing open

Sharon standing on top of the ledges that are a short hike from the top of West Mount (aka Mount Oscar). Behind her that’s Mount Hale and we have a peek down the Zealand Valley too. My summer golfing-hiking and winter snowbird friend, Sharon, came all the way from Florida to ski a few days with me last week. We had talked about meeting up in Utah but I convinced her to come back home since we have had the best snow all winter. Weather in March is unpredictable. Will it be sunny and warm or will it be cold and snowing? We experienced a little of both last week and we had a great time. Sharon beat me to the slopes at Sunapee, she lives close by in New London. She wanted to find her “legs” without me. I thought this was pretty funny but she was serious. She somehow didn’t manage to go skiing once last winter so she wanted to make sure she remembered. Yes, skiing is like riding a bicycle; you don’t forget how to do it. Sharon is a beautiful skier and I still find it hard to believe that her confidence in

I wish these were my words, but they are from another Advocate: “ The Republicans might want to think about that, before they hand us another can of whoop bleep like Romney, Dole, McCain, or Ford, or Bush III. Based upon his pathetic amnesty, tax, and common core stance , the only Republic Bush can save is some 3rd world people’s republic, which come to think of it, is what we are turning into courtesy of coat holders like the aforementioned. From Associated Press last week I learned that Sen. Dick Durbin, Democrat, accused Republicans of holding back the name of Loretta Lynch to become the next Eric Holder. He said Republicans are putting the president’s attorney general nominee “in the back of the bus by delaying her confirmation. AP: “She would become the nation’s first black female attorney general, replacing Eric Holder, the first African-American in the job. Durbin: “That is unfair. It’s unjust. It is beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell planned a vote on Lynch’s nomination this week but delayed it when the Senate was unable to finish work on a bill to combat human trafficking. cause of a partisan spat over abortion funding, with Democrats objecting to a provision blocking money in a new victims’ fund from paying for abortions in most cases. “The Lynch nomination is next on the schedule. The only thing holding up that vote is the Democrats’ filibuster of a bill that would help prevent kids from being sold into sex slavery, McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said in response to Durbin. “The sooner they allow the Senate to pass that bipartisan bill, the sooner the Senate can move to the Lynch nomination. SUMMATION by me: Dems say GOP slid in language re: abortion. GOP says no. Democrats claim Republicans snuck the abortion provision into the trafficking bill without telling them. Republicans note that the language has been there since the bill was introduced early this year, and no one raised objections as it unanimously passed the Judiciary Committee. Democrats insist they weren’t aware of it. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

State Something Day

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Perhaps you’ve read of the latest kerfuffle at the New Hampshire State House. Some feel a group of fourth graders were subjected to an inappropriate display of how a bill becomes law. The students had worked hard at getting the Red Tailed Hawk named as the state raptor. Their bill passed committee and then came to the floor of the house for a vote while the fourth graders waited anxiously in the gallery. From the way people are talking about it you might think they expected civil discussion, bipartisan back rubs, kind words, tea and crumpet roundtable interventions and champagne toasts all around once the bill became law. Instead they were treated to discourse and angry words against the bill, there was representatives from both parties who argued against it and even one who used it as an analogy for something else that some found inappropriate. There were no tea and crumpets, never mind the champagne. Just another day in the State House. The bill was defeated. As it is with most things nowadays, people who like to spend their days on the Internet commenting on stuff they don’t like, were commenting on it. Some wondered how in the world are kids ever going to learn how government works if they have to be subjected to such things and that apologies must be given. (Maybe it could have

been used as a good teaching moment for what an analogy is, but that’s only the way my mind works.) The state raptor thing is just one in a long line of declaring something or other the state something or other and it seemed like, according to the way the day went, that legislators are getting a little tired of it and maybe they have a good point when it comes to the time it takes and the money it costs to introduce bills. Still, I don’t feel we can really give up on designating things to represent our state. After all, that is what confused the NH Department of Travel and Tourism (DTT) a few years back when they spent hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to have someone in Florida figure out what thing defined New Hampshire best and they still couldn’t come up with an answer. I often feel that is why students keep suggesting bills to help name things state things; maybe they are just feeling lost and confused. After all, if the DTT can’t, who can? On the other hand, the legislature is finding themselves presented with these bills which often get in the way of more important ones, like what people should not be allowed to do while stuck in their cars in a traffic jam. So, to make it easier for all, I am suggesting a “State Something Day at the State House. It is this day when all of these naming something state somethings will be resolved. It would be a fun day at the State House, like a casual Friday at the office. Jeans and shorts and even clean T-shirts would be allowed to be worn. Let’s invite the Senate over too; some of them might come even if there isn’t a casino bill. Over the course of a few months, school children would be encouraged to

send in ideas for things that should be designated state something or others. Then all of the ideas would be collected. Heck, they don’t even have to go through committees. There will be a buffet set up in the hall and legislators can even sit wherever they want. The gallery would be filled with kids who were picked by lottery and the rest could watch on closed-circuit television in their classrooms. Then the Speaker of the House will take the list of suggestions and read them off. Of course, they will have been sorted out by category first so that all ideas about something or other will all be voted on at once. It will be a simple “nay or “yay vote and whichever one gets the most votes officially becomes that state something or other. This way we can not only figure out in one day what the state raptor, fossil and organic fruit would be, but a whole slew of other things as well that never would have had their day in the sun. (After all, one legislator did suggest the state hot dog and even though he seemed to say it sarcastically, some pundit psychologists on TV claimed it was really a deep-seated subconscious desire.) Of course, no matter what, there will still be debates; it is just the nature of the legislative beast. I can’t see things like what will be the official state toilet paper making it through unscathed. Legislators with septic systems and those on public sewers will most likely force a lively debate between the selection of one-ply or two. (I’m sure there’ll be many giggles from the gallery on this one.) Anyone saying anything considered inappropriate will be fined $50. (Unfortunately, inappropriate will See smith on 30

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, March 26, 2015

The Big, Fat “American Worker Recruitment First” Lie of H-1B Y o u ’ v e heard it from Big Government lobbyists. You’ve heard it from Big Business lackeys in both political by Michelle Malkin parties. And you’ve heard Syndicated Columnist it from journalists, pundits and thinktankers ad nauseam: The H-1B foreign guest worker program, they claim, requires American employers to first show that they searched for and tried to recruit American workers before tapping an ever-growing government-rigged pipeline of cheap foreign workers. The foot soldiers of the openborders brigade are lying, deluded, ignorant or bought-off. On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee brought top independent academics and informed whistleblowers to Washington to expose the truth. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, hosted Howard University associate professor of public policy Ron Hira, Rutgers University professor Hal Salzman, Infosys whistleblower Jay Palmer and former computer programmerturned-lawyer John Miano, who brought much-needed reality checks on the systemic betrayal of American workers to the Beltway table. Miano’s testimony was particularly important because he explained how the little known “OPT” (Optical Training Program) for foreign students is being used to circumvent H-1B and supply large corporations with cheap foreign labor. President Obama has expanded this

regulatory program by unfettered administrative fiat. As Miano noted: “OPT has no labor protections of any kind. Aliens on OPT do not even have to be paid at all. While DHS requires aliens to work in an area related to their major area of study, DHS has no ability to ensure that this happens. Under OPT, over 125,000 foreign workers a year are simply turned loose in America with no supervision or restrictions.” Also on hand at the hearing: a few Big Tech shills toeing the Zuckerberg/Gates/ Chamber of Commerce line that there’s a catastrophic American tech worker shortage, even as thousands upon thousands of American workers are being laid off in favor of underpaid, easily exploited H-1Bs. (Just use H-1B-promoter Google’s search engine and type in “Southern California Edison” and “layoffs.”) Grassley put it plainly: “Most people believe that employers are supposed to recruit Americans before they petition for an H-1B worker. Yet, under the law, most employers are not required to prove to the Department of Labor that they tried to find an American to fill the job first.” He added, “And, if there is an equally or even better qualified U.S. worker available, the company does not have to offer him or her the job. Over the years, the program has become a government-assisted way for employers to bring in cheaper foreign labor, and now it appears these foreign workers take over -- rather than complement -- the U.S. workforce.” Hira affirmed: “It’s absolutely

Political Lessons in The Granite State

It has begun. Presidential candidates are flooding our state in hopes of bringing their message forth for 2016. Vetting these candidates by Jane Cormier can be a dauntHooksett, NH. ing task. It is true that politics can be a trying thing. I myself awoke to the political world here in New Hampshire about four years ago. When I saw the level of subterfuge and outright political falsehoods being perpetrated in my community, I decided to jump into the proverbial game. Having won a seat in the 2012 NH State House after a primary and general election in Belknap District 8, I learned being a “Conservative” can be a tricky thing. Lesson One. After serving all but two months of my term in the NH State House, my family and I moved to Hooksett for business reasons. At that See malkin on 30 time, we decided to take on a sit-

ting state senator who was not living up to his rhetoric of standing up for the “little guy”. This State Senator assisted in bringing us Medicaid Expansion, and the NH Gas Tax. He was soft on the Second Amendment. Again, there was a challenge to run against an establishment GOP candidate, and my family and I decided to take this challenge on. This senator spent over $150,000 to win his primary (with over $180,000 spent in the total election). Despite having only about $18,000 in campaign funding, we were very competitive and lost by only 483 votes despite running in a brand new district. On the positive side, I learned much about the establishment “machine” of the NH GOP. Unfortunately, none of it was pretty. Lesson Two. This past week, Senator Ted Cruz came to NH for three different events. I was lucky enough to catch him at the first event at Turbocam in Barrington, which was free to the public. Sen. Afghan Peace Process Far From Assured UNITED NATIONS

- Afghanistan’s long and tortuous road to peace and reconciliation still seems a near mirage as an entrenched terby John J. Metzler rorist insurSyndicated Columnist gency seems to rebuff political and security gains made by the Kabul government and international military assistance. Still the UN mission in the war torn South Asian country seems cautiously optimistic and offered a renewed hope for a still complex peace process. Addressing the Security Council, Nicholas Haysom, the UN’s representative for the Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) stated that, “significant developments” had brought renewed hope for the peace process including the new National Unity Government and a dialogue between Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan. While Taliban terrorists had suffered setbacks, other factions of the militants were willing to negotiate with the central government. Ominously, Nicholas Haysom warned that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) “had also established a foothold in the country” which while not yet significant, had a “potential to offer an alternative flagpole to which

otherwise isolated insurgent splinter groups could rally.” Speaking before the Security Council, Russia’s deputy UN delegate Vladimir Safronkov reiterated that extremists would try to “rock the boat” of the new Afghan government as well as test the country’s security forces. He warned about the widening activities of Islamic State (ISIL) as well as Afghanistan’s rising drug production which now equaled fifteen percent of the beleaguered country’s gross domestic product. Attacks on civilians by Taliban insurgents were responsible for most of the 10,000 civilians killed in 2014. Afghanistan’s Ambassador, Zahir Tanin, concurred by adding that the past year had seen “tremendous progress and change” with the country having completed its political and security transition. There were elections which saw the first-ever transfer from one democratically elected government to another, and equally, the ending of the long running International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) which has been replaced by a new NATO mission, Operation “Resolute Support”. Since the multinational intervention in 2001 toppled the ruling Taliban Islamic fundamentalist regime, security in Afghanistan rested on American forces as well as ISAF. In turn both the USA and ISAF have been training Af-

ghan security forces and police to various levels of success as to be able to independently carry the country’s security burden. The ISAF mission ended in 2014 with the Afghan national army assuming full responsibility for

combat operations. Today the new NATO mission “Resolute Support” deploys a multinational force of 13,000 of which the USA fields 6,800 troops, Germany 850, Italy 500 and the Unit-

Two Warnings When Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress on March 3rd, it was the third time he had done so. by Thomas Sowell The only other Syndicated Columnist person to address a joint session of Congress three times was the legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill. The parallels between the two leaders do not end there. Both warned the world of mortal dangers that others ignored, in hopes that those dangers would go away. In the years leading up to World War II, Churchill tried to warn the British, and the democratic nations in general, of what a monstrous threat Hitler was. Despite Churchill’s legendary status today, he was not merely ignored but ridiculed at the time, when he was repeatedly warning in vain. Knowing that his warnings provoked only mocking laughter in some quarters, even among some members of his own party, he said on March 14, 1938 in the House of Commons, “Laugh but listen.” Just two years later, with Hitler’s planes bombing London, night after night, the laughter was gone. Many at the time thought that Britain itself would soon be gone as well, like other European nations that succumbed to the Nazi blitzkrieg in weeks (like France) or days (like Holland). How did things get to such a desperate situation, with Britain alone continuing the fight, and struggling to survive, against the massive Nazi war machine that now controlled much of the material resources on the continent

of Europe? Things got that desperate by following policies strikingly similar to the policies being followed by the Western democracies today, including some of the very same notions and catchwords being used today. Just recently, a State Department official in the Obama administration said that Americans have remained safe in a nuclear age, not because of our own nuclear arsenal but because “we created an intricate and essential system of treaties, laws and agreements.” If “treaties, laws and agreements” produced peace, there would never have been a Second World War. The years leading up to that monumental catastrophe were filled with international treaties and arms control agreements. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended the First World War, imposed strong restrictions on Germany’s military forces -- on paper. The Washington Naval Agreements of 1922 imposed restrictions on all the major naval powers of the world -- on paper. The Kellogg-Briand pact of 1928 created an international renunciation of war -- on paper. The Munich agreement of 1938 produced a paper with Hitler’s signature on it that British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain waved to the cheering crowds when he returned to England, and said that it meant “Peace for our time.” Less than a year later, World War II began. Winston Churchill never bought any of this. He understood that military deterrence was what preserved peace. With England playing a leadership role in Europe, “England’s hour of weakness is Europe’s hour of danger,” he said in the House of Commons See Sowell on 26

about what a great course and how much fun it was,” said Starr Lawton who is the organizer of the Indoor Triathlon as well as the bar manager at Funpot. “It was really a great new element to the event.” The top team honors went to “The Diner Dogs” who represented the Union Diner in Laconia. They combined their scores of the five events with additional fundraising that is done before the triathlon and has become a huge part of the fundraising. With the help of Rose Pucci, owner of the Union Diner where she sold the fundraising dog bones you may have seen gracing the walls of some Lakes Region businesses, $1,400 dollars were raised.

The top team on the fundraising front once again was “The Looney Bin Ladies” representing the Weirs Beach eatery which is across the street from Funspot. The Looney Bin Ladies raised an amazing $4,325 dollars with bone sales and donations. Second in fundraising with a very impressive total of $2,601 was the “Against All Odds” team which has competed in every Indoor Triathlon since the first one in 2005. Even the team “Lost Paws” from Mix94.1, who has been an event sponsor since the beginning, came through with $1,385 raised in donations. Fun awards of the event were ones Like “Best Costumes” as team were encouraged to dress in a theme related to animals for the day. Taking home that award this year were the “Hello Kitties” who represented Eptam Plastics. The final results of the triathlons are always an

emotional time for Starr Lawton as each year always surpasses the last in monies raised for the Humane Society. This year when all of the events were finished and all of the teams gathered in the D.A. Long Tavern Starr was handed the results by Steve Lawton who invented the scoring system for the

event. “When I saw the numbers I burst into tears,” said Starr. “This event really blows me away and all of the teams that participate year after year and continue to raise even more money each time, they really blow me away. It really is a fundraiser unlike any other you have seen. What started out as a silly idea eleven years ago has turned into a great event and the best part is we are saving a lot of animals. That is what it is really all about. The people who play in it year after year are the real heroes to the animals.” Starr also made it an important point to recognize all of the volunteers from the Humane Society who gave of their time on a Saturday. “We really couldn’t run this event without them and they are always here every year with a smile on their faces. “ Already the wheels are in motion in planning next year’s Triathlon with their eye on an even bigger event. There were three businesses who very generously donated to the event that were not listed in last week’s “Thank You” ad: Faro Italian Grille, Lakeside Animal Hospital and Gunstock Mountain.

Why Bother Migrating? by Steve White Contributing Writer

Why do birds migrate? Wouldn’t it be simpler and safer for wild birds to stay in the same regions they nest in rather than risk flying thousands of miles twice each year? In truth, if birds did not migrate their lives would be even more difficult to survive than making their vast journeys. If no birds migrated, natural food sources in their breeding areas would be depleted very quickly and many baby chicks would starve. Competition for nesting sites would, ultimately, be extremely fierce and the population of predators would increase due to the higher concentration of breeding birds and the easy meals of the nestlings. The main reason some birds migrate is for food and nesting purposes. Each spring, natural food sources are replenished as migrating, nesting birds arrive. As the food supplies dwindle in the fall, migrating birds leave to other replenished food sources in the tropics. This cycle has served wild birds well for centuries. This blueprint of migrat-

ing for food also applies to our short range migrants as well. Known as irruptions, these unique paths of movement are also due to a lack of natural food sources. Irruptions become larger when food sources in northern regions are inadequate, forcing wild birds to search for food further south than their normal territories. A phenomenon known as fallout is just one danger migrating birds face during a long journey. From around March-May, weather conditions periodically exist where very strong, turbulent winds and rain create the “fallout. This naturally happens when a virulent cold front crosses the Texas coast and moves into the Gulf of Mexico during the daylight hours. The rain and wind practically stops the migrating birds, forcing them to use up most of their energy reserves. Thousands of exhausted migrating birds are forced to seek any shelter and available food when they finally reach the coastline. Without adequate, natural habitats along this important coast, tens of thousands of birds would perish each migration. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Tips to Manage Pain From Arthritis Naturally

(StatePoint) One in five adults in the United States now reports having doctordiagnosed arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-

of Americans. With that in mind, here are several natural ways to reduce complications and pain associated with arthritis: • Those who are overweight or obese are diagnosed with an arthritis symptom more often than those with a lower body mass index, according to CDC statistics. Take a load off your joints by maintaining a healthy weight. Weight loss has also been linked to less pain from arthritis, especially in the knees, which bear the brunt of excess pounds. • Evidence indicates that both endurance and resistance exercise can provide significant benefits to those with osteoarthritis, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. However, arthritis patients should typically avoid placing too much pressure on joints. Lowimpact exercises such as biking, swimming and walking are recommended See arthritis on 19

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Spend some time online (Facebook, any comment section of any article) and you’ll notice a lot of negativity. More than negativity you’ll notice a lot of unkindness. Heck, you’ll find some flat out jerks. The obvious reason this happens is because it’s easy to spout off or be rude from the safety of a keyboard. In person, most of these key board warriors would edit themselves to a much greater extent. How about driving in heavy traffic? Ever noticed any anger or rage there? The fact is, we have all been on the receiving end and the giving end of unkindness in our lives. The question becomes: do we want this to continue? If we don’t, then what are we doing about it? This is so key to the quality of our lives and our relationships. It is also related to our health. Being kind and giving, improves our well being. The Making Caring Common (MCC) Project is an endeavor of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. They ask a really interesting question: are we raising nice kids? Are we raising caring kids? They

February 25, 2015 Message of the

offer resources, tips, info, and guides for parents, educators, and caregivers to help raise kids that are caring and ethical. Their website is: Harvard.edu/ making-caring-common. I think the info they give is great for helping kids, but even if you never deal with kids, the info could be applied to an adult too, in my opinion. Here are 5 tips they shared for raising kind kids: 1) Make caring for others a priority. This sounds like commonsense, but too often we focus on achievements and goals first and foremost. Even to the extent of putting ourselves ahead of others. If we want kindness to be a priority, then make it so….focus on success, sure, but not in place of others. 2) Provide opportunities to be a caring person. We all understand that “practice makes perfect”, but too often we limit this idea to stuff like sports. The same can be true of the ways we act. We need to practice kindness, in order to make it the natural response. This can mean volunteering, helping out at home, or at school. The point is, we have to help kids have kindness as their first response. 3) Be a strong mentor and role model. This is obvious right? Walk the walk. If we

want some type of behavior out of our kids, then let’s show them the way with our own lives. 4) Expand your child’s circle of concern. We all care about our friends and families. Yet, the world is a big place with a lot more people. Improving the world then, hinges on people caring about more than ourselves and beginning to understand that our actions affect others. 5) Help children learn self-control and manage feelings effectively. Why do we have moments where we are less kind than we should be? Usually, it reflects our own issues or bad moments. I know I am much more likely to be a jerk, if I’m having a bad day. This seems to be true for most of us. In terms of kids, we need to help them learn to deal with bad days and to not let those times change how they act towards others. The MCC is a great resource, if interested you should check it out. There is never a time when being more kind is a bad idea. Conversely, we all have times, where need more kindness from someone else. My hope for all of us is that we find health and happiness. It seems that kindness in our lives is a very good first step for our kids and for ourselves.

treatments for arthritis. A doctor or physical therapist is a good resource for helping you make a fitness game plan. • No matter what precautions you take, pain from your condition is sometimes inevitable. And when it’s severe, it can be debilitating.

Some arthritis medications mask pain, which may make it harder to gauge the status of your condition. A homeopathic medicine, however, works naturally with your body to ease suffering from arthritis pain. “Joint pains are common in my practice so I often recommend Arnicare

Arthritis Tablets, says Dr. Albert Levy of Manhattan Family Practice in New York City (Manhattanfamilypractice.com). “I feel confident in recommending it because it won’t interfere with other medications and homeopathic medicines, such as this, are one of the safest classes of drugs. Arnicare Arthritis Tablets are quick-dissolving homeopathic tablets that

relieve minor aches and pains associated with arthritis, specifically from stiff or swollen joints and flare-ups caused by changes in weather. They can be a good option for those with multiple conditions. More information can be found at www.Arnicare.com. • Stiff joints can be painful. Stretch regularly to prevent stiffness. Loon Mountain in Lincoln. We began our day at Loon’s South Peak for almost first tracks. I know it seems like South Peak opened yesterday but it first opened with just a couple of trails way back in December of 2007. Now there are more choices of trails that range from moderate to super steep Black Diamonds. We stuck to the more moderate blue square rated slopes of Boom Run and Cruiser; welcoming wide open trails with nice terrain features and big sweeping turns. The sun was out and the vista was certainly pleasing. I pointed out

to South Peak’s Pemi Base Camp and we packed up to leave at lunch time. We did a lot of skiing and we decided we needed to rest up a little before heading to Cannon Mountain by doing a little shopping in Lincoln. We grabbed a sandwich in town at Half Baked and Fully Brewed. They have excellent chicken salad among other tasty things. Then we headed to Lahout’s because Sharon wanted to replace her scratched up goggles so she could see. We had to laugh at the young saleslady at her pronouncement that she had to be really smart to master all the choices in lenses for

bob houses and we spied some snowmobiles racing around its surface too. We skied a few hours and Sharon was happy with the results of her test outing. The next day

We arrived at Cannon a little later than we planned but we decided a couple of hours would be plenty. We rode the lifts to the summit and right away we noticed that the temperature was dropping and the wind was picking up. A sure sign that weather was moving in. Donna, the bartender told us she has seen quite a few people snap their photos at the bar for the same reason. Day 3, we awoke to four inches of nice new fluffy snow in Franconia. The temps were only going to reach the high teens. We had planned to head to Burke but tired legs and new snow suggested we should head to Bretton Woods. Bretton Woods was sweet! We didn’t exactly show up in time for first runs but I knew if we headed to the far edges of the resort we were sure to find untouched snow. On West Peak, we had the Waumbek Trail all to ourselves. Plumes of light fluffy cold snow fluffed into the air after each turn. We made figure eights with our

tracks. After a half dozen runs we had to go back to the lodge to warm-up. Sharon’s Florida thinned blood didn’t keep her toes warm enough to stay out longer. We enjoyed another lovely White Mountain day. At first the clouds were hiding Mount Washington and all the other mountains in the Presidential Range but during the day the clouds lifted and hung out just on the summit of Mount Washington. We didn’t get to see the towers on the tippy top until the very end of the day. The bright red roof of the Omni Mount Washington Hotel shined bright down below and it was surrounded by the snow blanketed golf course crisscrossed with cross country ski tracks. We skied all over! Waumbek was hands down our favorite trail, admittedly mostly due to the perfect pitch and easy fresh tracks. Another favorite was Granny’s Grit’s rolling terrain as it weaves through the trees. On the other side of the resort on Mount Stickney, Sharon was thrilled to ride the Telegraph Tbar and see the Stickney Cabin. She couldn’t remember the last time she had ridden a t-bar. This is only the third season it’s been open and it is a favorite hideaway for taking a break while sit-

ting next to toasty warm woodstove. We had fun right in our own backyard. Sharon returned to Sunapee the next day while I reluctantly returned to work. Have Fun! Always looking for a challenge, Porter learned the ins and outs of the oil field along the way and eventually ended up working for J. This series of photos shows Matt Porter working with his team to install a new heating and cooling system at the Margate Resort. It was one of two units they installed at the Laconia Hotel. Porter Heating and Cooling has grown over the years through word of mouth and is now dealing with a growing list of commercial accounts like Monroe Brake and Muffler and Tire Warehouse where they handle all the heating systems for all of the stores in the brendan smith Photos state. on burners and boilers was a lot of his business but it helped him build up a lot of word of mouth for not only his prices but his quality work. “That ninety-nine dollar rate really helped get things going,” said Porter. “I only advertised for about six months and with the word of mouth I soon had more than enough work to keep me busy. I had about seventy-five accounts and it kept growing.” The cleanings led to bigger installation and maintenance jobs including some big projects on lakefront homes. His father, who had recently retired, came on board to help and another fulltime man was hired as well as a part-time secretary to keep the increasing paperwork in order. Still, Porter, in keeping with his vision of customer service makes sure that he is part of every job and always deals with the customer directly. “Most of our residential customers are in Central New Hampshire in the Lakes Region and a few as far as Concord and

Plymouth so I can make sure to be involved in every job as that is very important to me.” said Porter. “We have about four hundred residential customers now.” The word of mouth has also spread to commercial accounts. Today Por-

I decided I really wanted to start my own business with all that I had learned over the years and the Lawtons supported me on it and told me that if it didn’t work out I could always have a job there.” So, with that blanket of security beneath him, Matt Porter took the pickup truck and trailer he had owned for years along with his collection of tools and started Porter Heating and Cooling. “One of the reasons I really wanted to go out on my own was because of customer service and making sure they get the best deal for their money” said Porter. “Some companies will go assess a situation and then tell the customer how much it will cost and give them a bill just for the assessment. I wanted to give that same service but at no cost to them unless I did the work needed. I also wanted that work to be as affordable as possible.” The first year he was on his own was one of survival. install two new rooftop heating/cooling units at the Margate Resort in Laconia. It involved working in a cruel and cold wind blowing off Lake Winnipesaukee and hiring a crane to lift the giant units and Porter there himself for every step of the installation. “Will I be adding more employees? It is hard to say right now,” said Porter. “Where I am today is something I never imagined but I know that it is due to the fact of my commitment to the customer and I am always aware of that. I always want to keep things on a personal level. I feel very fortunate to be where I am today.” Porter also makes sure he gives back to his community with donations to local police associations and giving away free cleanings to auction off at the yearly Santa Fund auction. Right now it doesn’t look like Matt Porter is going to be changing his direction anytime soon. All those challenges he faced head on have seemed to have paid off. NEVER replace your roof again! Little to NO maintenance.

DEAR TIM: I’ve always wanted a wet bar. How do you deal with the plumbing issues if you want to put a wet bar where you currently don’t have access to a drain? Is it necessary for the countertop to be the same depth as a regular kitchen countertop? I’m worried about using granite for a top in case a guest chips it. --Leslie B., Hartford, Conn. DEAR LESLIE: I’ve built my share of wet bars over the years and know how handy they can be. There are quite a few things to consider when planning one, such as who will be the bartender. If it’s you, my guess is you might want to face your guests as you prepare their drinks. This means you may end up with a bar very similar to what you see in a public drinking establishment. There’s always a wall behind the bartender that has the spirits lined up for display and lower cabinets for supplies. The actual workspace is a freestanding bar that has a place for the customers/ guests to sit or stand, a

Another option is to install a wet bar on a wall in the corner of a room. If you choose this option, traditional kitchen cabinets will work well, and you end up with generous counter space. The other benefit is that you can use standard-depth wall cabi-

nets for storing glasses and other things you’ll need to prepare and serve drinks. If you choose a design where you face and serve your guests, regular kitchen cabinets and counter depth will not work well. It’s all about how far you can comfortably reach. Cruz’s voting record, we know he solidly stands behind his Conservative principles. It is equally apparent, this constancy can sometimes upset the moderate faction of the GOP. Good to know. Lesson Three. During his “conversation” with the 200 plus folks in attendance, it was immediately apparent that Sen. Cruz has a gift for communication. His discourse with the crowd was a lesson in taking complex material and delivering it back in a palatable, optimistic, and easy to understand manner. This is an extremely important gift. Lesson Four. In my opinion, Senator Cruz offers our country a

of this, I urge you to go visit no fewer than three real bars. Go at a slow time of day and take a tape measure, notepad, pencil and a great camera with you. Chat up the manager or bartender and tell them you’re there to try to take a few measurements for the cool wet bar you’re about to build. They’ll almost always be more than willing to allow you to take measurements. Ask to take photos at the same time so you don’t forget something you see that you like. You’ll want to measure the distance from the floor to the height of the work counter the bartender uses. Measure how high the actual bar top surface is from the floor that the customers sit their drinks on. You’ll be stunned at the different measurements you walk away with. It’s vital you visit at least three bars and see which one is most comfortable for you. Measure the distance from the edge of the bartender’s work surface counter to the back edge of the bar top where customers on stand. doesn’t have to reach too far to place a glass on the bar top. Ask the bartenders what problems they have with their bars. You may discover they hate certain things. Ask them the top three things they’d never be without in a wet bar. Let’s talk plumbing, since it’s a wet bar. A wet bar is one that has running water and a drain. Drain lines are usually the hardest thing to accommodate, but the good news is that you can install an above-floor system that will capture the waste water from your bar sink and pump it to a drain pipe at some other part of your home if it’s too hard to run a traditional drain line. If the wet bar is going to be above an unfinished basement, you may be able to run a drain line with ease across the basement ceiling to an existing plumbing stack. Many local plumbing inspectors and codes approve mechanical air vents that can be put under the sink cabinet. This saves you from running a traditional vent pipe that exits the roof of your home. I’d probably only run a cold water line to the wet bar and split it off under the sink cabinet. I’d install a tiny point-of-use water heater for the hot water you’ll need. I’ve installed granite on a wide majority of my wet bar jobs. It’s such a magnificent material. It’s classy, and some of the colors and mineral crystals in the top make for great conversation. Here’s the mistake many make when granite tops get chipped. They throw away the small pieces of granite. Don’t do that! Save them, and a great granite fabricator can use high-strength clear epoxy to put the chips back together. Gaps left by any missing tiny pieces can be filled in and colorized with a special epoxy. in 1931. Today, with the Obama administration “leading from behind” -- in practice, not leading at all -- we see in Ukraine and the Middle East what that produces. As for disarmament, Churchill said in 1932, “Alone among the nations we have disarmed while others have rearmed.” Today, the United States has that dubious and reckless distinction. Our pacifists, like those in England during the 1930s, argue that we should disarm to “induce parallel” behavior by others. In England between the two World Wars, the rhetoric was that they should disarm “as an example to others.” Whether others would follow that example was just as dubious then as it is today. While Russia and China increased the share of their national output that went to military spending in 2014, the United States reduced its share. Churchill deplored the “inexhaustible gullibility” of disarmament advocates in 1932. That gullibility is still not exhausted in 2015. “Not one of the lessons of the past has been learned, not one of them has been applied, and the situation is incomparably more dangerous,” Churchill said in 1934. And every one of those words is more urgently true today, in a nuclear age. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. The world is at war, certain groups threaten our lives within our borders, NO rule of law, Our Constitution practically non-existent, Iran is feeling the power, and Barack and Michele Obama are doing television shows. When you have no idea of what you are doing; golf trip, do some TV, spark a small war in another country, OR a race war here at home. The plan is working; get your hands on that Nobel Peace Prize, and while we are waiting for whatever you meant by “TRANSFORM” America, and will you re-open Gitmo for Americans deemed unfit to be part of your Amerika.

have to de defined by committee.) After the day is over, the voting is done and the buffet emptied, many things will now be state something or others and there will be no more brought up during the rest of the legislative session. This should satisfy many people on both sides of this sensitive issue and the kids will be happy and hopefully no feelings will be hurt too badly if their idea for a state something didn’t win. There might have to be some kind of consolation prize, maybe a certificate that they tried. Heck, why not ribbons for the legislators who come in that day. Everyone makes the team. Who knows, this idea just might catch on.

ed Kingdom 470, among others. Just one year ago, ISAF still maintained a 51,000 contingent which included 33,000 Americans. Despite the ongoing insurgency, the mission has been considerably downsized. To be sure, the situation has changed. British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant stated, “We must not lose sight of how far Afghanistan has come in the last year, in light of the presidential election and the Kabul government’s responsibility for security. What the Kabul government calls the Transformation Decade (2015-2024) nonetheless faces a peace process which the UN envoy called “fragile and vulnerable to external destabilization, and a moribund

economy as well. India’s delegate, Asoke Mukerji, admitted candidly that “Afghanistan’s economic transition must be supported by a private sector-led process. Slovakia’s UN Ambassador, Frantisek Ruzicka, concurred citing his own country’s experience, “Foreign aid could only help overcome difficulties in the initial phase of the country’s transformation. Deep structural reform was both the most important and the most painful part of the process. Afghanistan still depends heavily on development aid with the USA and Japan being the top donors. Resolving the complex security threat from the Pakistan-based Taliban remains paramount. Traditionally Pakistan has played a double-game in the region by supporting some Taliban terrorists while at the same time often being the victim of their attacks. Much of this has to do with the complex tribal and ethnic quilt of peoples who traditionally lived on both sides of the current border. Now the new “fighting season in Afghanistan will test the mettle of the Afghan army and shall equally challenge the political will of countries, especially the USA, to keep a small but significant troop commitment as a security “insurance policy to guard the past gains which were won through so much blood, sweat and treasure. not true that employers seeking H-1Bs must put American workers first, either by “law or regulations. How did this myth gain such traction? Many commentators and journalists confuse the labor certification process required for companies applying to obtain green cards (lawful permanent residency status) for H-1B workers with the Labor Condition Application (LCA) process for H-1Bs. Labor certification in the green card process “exists to protect U.S. workers and the U.S. labor market by ensuring that foreign workers seeking immigrant visa classifications are not displacing equally qualified U.S. workers. Only in extremely narrow and exceptional circumstances do these nominal protections exist in the H-1B LCA process. (Companies must be classified as “H-1B dependent for the requirements to apply. Big Tech giants like Facebook have been lobbying mightily to avoid the classification.) And even those narrow exceptions are easily and often circumvented by H-1B foreign worker traffickers. Conservative journalist W. James Antle gets to the heart of the matter: “If the government has discretion in how it exercises its legitimate authority over who comes and who goes, a prerequisite for national sovereignty, then shouldn’t it exercise such discretion in a way that minimizes the impoverishment of Americans?

For a very brief window, Grassley and, yes, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., a small group of H-1B-employing banks and other financial institutions that accepted federal bailout money from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) did have to demonstrate that they had taken “good-faith steps to recruit U.S. workers and offer them wages “at least as high as those offered to H-1B workers. In addition, the targeted employers had to show that they “must not have laid off, and will not lay off, any U.S. worker in a job essentially equivalent to the H-1B position in the area of intended employment of the H-1B worker within a narrow time frame. But this American worker-first provision, vociferously opposed by Big Business and Big Government, expired in 2011. The refusal of the vast majority of politicians and the White House to embrace these protections for all U.S. workers tells you everything you need to know about H-1B’s big, fat lies. Great Waters Music Festival Presents Aztec Two-Step Renowned folk-rock duo Aztec Two-Step will be performing a concert of their own Aztec Two-Step classics as well as a tribute to the iconic Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers on Friday, April 17th at 7:30pm, at Great Waters Music Festival, Anderson Hall, 205 South Main St, Wolfeboro. Tickets for the concert: $12-$35 at www.greatwaters.org or (603) 569-7710. Recording and touring non-stop since the early ‘70s, Rex and Neal have accumulated forty-plus years of awards, accolades and TV and radio appearances that include the David Letterman Show, World Café Live, and the King Biscuit Flour Hour, and have graced countless stages including those of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In 1987, the duo’s “Living In America” received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album and was named in Billboard’s year-end critic’s poll, and in 1999 they were the subject of “No Hit Wonder,” a documentary that aired on PBS. In 2005, they released a careerdefining “Days Of Horses” CD to

Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman aka Aztec Two-Step, will perform at Anderson Hall In Wolfeboro on Friday, April 17th at 7:30pm. rave reviews. Up until this point Fowler had been the primary songwriter of the duo, but here, five of the album’s eleven songs, including their baby boomer an-

themic “Better These Days,” were penned by Neal Shulman. The title track “Days of Horses,” written by Rex Fowler, was used as the opening and closing music in the

2012 documentary “Selling Cars in America.” Of this CD release, the Boston Globe said, “Fans of the duo’s harmony-driven tunes and easygoing acoustic guitar riffs will recognize their James Taylormeets-Simon & Garfunkel sound. What’s new is the mood. This album sits back on its haunches as Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman look back wistfully at American pop culture and their own ride through it.” In 2012, to commemorate their 40th Anniversary year, Rex and Neal released their 10th studio album “Cause & Effect” (Red Engine Records). It is a collection of 16 socially significant songs, produced by Paul Guzzone, who also produced their “Days of Horses” CD, and features their long-time bassist Fred Holman. Defined by intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar & inspiring two-part harmonies, Aztec TwoStep continues to be one of acoustic music’s most respected and enduring acts, forty-plus years after Fowler and Shulman serendipitously met at an open mic at a Boston coffeehouse.
