Foreign Policy is Domestic Policy, Rubio Advises

Last September, on the summit of Mount Tecumseh, the American flag was raised as part of the Flags on the 48 Memorial Hike in memory of those that lost their lives on September 11, 2001. When it comes to the proper etiquette of displaying the U.S. Flag, there are rules. Do you know what they are?

Flag Etiquette -Do You Know The Do’s And Dont’s?

Historical legend credits Betsy Ross with the creation of the first American Flag. Though there is no physical verification that Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress who did make flags, actually made the first flag, a story told by her grandson,

William Canby, tells of Ross explaining to him how it came to be, has been the source for the history of the flag’s creation. Meeting with General George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross in 1776, Ross was presented

with a sketch that featured 13 red and white stripes and 13 six-pointed stars and asked to make a flag that looked like it. She agreed, but suggested a few changes, including arranging the stars in a circle and reducing the points on each

star to five instead of six. This recounting was printed in Harpers Magazine in 1873 and soon became part of history, though there are some historians who doubt that was what actually hapSee flags on 30

NEW YORK--In a stirring and substantive foreign policy address, Senator Marco Rubio (RFL) presented his presidential vision for a new America. Calling for transby John J. Metzler formative leaderSyndicated Columnist ship in the 21st century, the Republican primary hopeful spoke passionately about the need for a reinvigorated American policy posture at a time when as he said, “Foreign affairs never mattered more.” Addressing an overflow audience at New York’s prestigious Council on Foreign Relations, Senator Rubio (43) painted a broad-brush vision in which a renewed American military and economy would face global challenges. He warned that during the Obama administration military levels have dropped precipitously, to where the U.S. Army is smaller than before WWII. Invoking American leadership in the post-war era from President Truman through Kennedy and Reagan, he intoned, “American strength is a means of preventing war, not promoting it. Weakness is the friend of danger and the enemy of peace.” “The Prosperity of our people now depends on their ability to interact freely and safely in the international marketSee Metzler on 9

Well, at The Wolfeboro Inn, the invitation to “re-charge is part of an initiative to keep you going. Or, more properly, to keep your electric vehicle going. You see, The Wolfeboro Inn has partnered with Tesla Motors to ensure that your electric vehicle will never be far from a place to re-charge its electric battery. Save The Food Pantry To The Editor: Ladies and Gentlemen I am writing today to pass along some information about a local necessity that is in jeopardy of shuttering its doors. The Center Harbor Food Pantry has served over 400 families a month for close to 18 years. It was recently brought to my attention that after decades of service, the pantry will close its doors unless it can come up with close to $90,000 to repay loans taken to stop the auction of the property a year ago. Pastor Bob, still very active at the young age of 76, has worked tirelessly to provide this service and has dealt with more than his fair share of roadblocks. The services provided by the food pantry go beyond simply food on the table, though that itself is something we all take for granted. Pastor Bob has helped people to receive basic toiletries, clothing, and furniture, and does so free of charge. I have volunteered with the Center Harbor Food Pantry for over a year now. It can’t be explained as to how important this pantry is to the Lakes Region and if it were to cease how many families will be looking to other already overloaded food pantries further away. What we need is money. What we really need are ideas to save this diamond in the rough so that those affected by this economy

Troops Needed In Afghanistan To The Editor: The Obama administration finally listened to our military leaders, and they are now planning on leaving 9800 troops in Afghanistan through 2016 and probably beyond. Originally they were going to draw down to 5500 troops. The Taliban continues to pose a threat in Afghanistan and ISIS could rear its ugly head. Our troops could be needed to quash enemy attacks in the region. Compared to our prior strength of 100,000 troops, the U.S. troops remaining in Afghanistan might not have the numerical strength to counter the Taliban throughout the country, and we cannot count on the Afghan Army to stand up to the Taliban. General Joe Dunford, Commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, stated Afghan troops will not be capable to conduct meaningful operations in Afghanistan once U.S. forces leave. We should keep the 9800 troops in

Afghanistan until the end of 2017 and then reevaluate the situation. We need ongoing capabilities to conduct special operations and surgical air and missile strikes to support the troops. The release of five top level Taliban terrorists from Guantanamo will come back to haunt us when they return to Afghanistan to continue their destabilizing activities and attacks on our forces and Afghan citizens. Our national security is partially dependent on maintaining a significant military presence in Afghanistan. Donald A. Moskowitz Londonderry, NH

Warm and Fuzzy To the Editor: Congressman Frank Guinta has suddenly decided that it’s politically useful to embrace the “warm and fuzzy and to act as if he loves animals. He’s made a big deal out of sponsoring a bill against horse slaughter, a very worthy bill that should not be used for political gain. That bill was around in 2007 when it was one of the first bills that newly elected Congresswoman Carol SheaPorter cosponsored, and she was still a cosponsor in 2014. Let’s look at the facts and do a comparison. Congressman Guinta in See mail boat on 44

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Staying Fit

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Brendan is on vacation this week so we are reprinting this article from September 26, 2013. It is also one of the over forty columns in his new book “The Best OF A F.O.O.L. In New Hampshire which will be out next week. As I reach the winter of my fifty-seventh year I admit that I don’t have the get up and go that I had when I was seventeen. In fact, I don’t have the get up and go I had when I was forty-seven. For a lot of men my age, “get up and go is something that they deal with a few times in the middle of the night. I think that too much “get up and go at the wrong time leads to not enough actual get up and go when it is really needed. Of course, it is important as you age that you try to keep up some sort of exercise regime. Getting exercise and moving around is more important as we get older. (Note: for you men “get up and go does not count for exercise.) I have, through my life, always been aware of the need to exercise. That doesn’t mean I’ve always done it, it just means I have been aware of the need. Recently, we purchased a treadmill and put it in the basement. Legend has it that people buy treadmills with the best intentions but then soon lose interest. This can be verified by going

to any yard sale. Nine out of ten times you will see a used treadmill or some other expensive piece of exercise equipment for sale. It is easy to negotiate a price with the owners, who are usually at the yard sale eating doughnuts, since they will do anything to get rid of the beast and not have to drag it back into the house. In fact, getting the damned thing out of the house and onto the lawn in the first place is most likely the most exercise they have gotten with the machine in a few years. Up to this point, we have made good use of our treadmill. If we are not walking or running on it, we occasionally use the handles to hang wet clothes that are not meant for the dryer. It’s been almost a year since we bought it and I use the treadmill a good four or five times a week. I do enjoy it more than when I used to belong to a gym. Buying a gym membership is similar to buying an exercise machine. It is usually done with great intentions but then, after a few tries, other things get in the way, like the new season of “American Idol. Unfortunately, you cannot get rid of a gym membership at a yard sale. I was never much of a weight guy when I was at the gym, but I would occasionally drift into the Nautilus Room. This is where you could, using odd-looking machines and equipment, tone up parts of your body you didn’t know you could tone. “Man, look at the muscles on that guy’s index finger. “Ears are looking good, Joe! The Nautilus machines are stressful. If you don’t adjust them properly, it is all for naught. Once, I was using a chest machine for

VISIT US AT WWW.BREAKHEARTTOOLS.COM two weeks and had the seat level on 3. I was told by an instructor that it really should be on 2. It was clear that my chest wasn’t getting any bigger. I failed to notice, until it was too late, that my right shoulder was now big enough to play a game of chess on. Once, I mistakenly went into the free weight room. Guys, the size of Mount Washington, wearing large leather belts were lifting Mini-Cooper sized weights over their heads with one hand. All eyes turned towards me. In order to keep my pride, I went to the largest dumbbell (the weights, of course) and lifted it over my head without thinking. After I put it down, I got a thumbs up from the Mount Washingtons and then quietly left. My arm and neck were sore for two weeks. I never dared cross into the free weight room again. I used to use the sauna at the gym, it seemed like a real benefit since it was something you couldn’t do at home. After a few months of spending ten minutes in a room with a lot of hot, sweaty, naked guys, the benefit of it suddenly eluded me. At fifty-seven, I’m happy with just the treadmill and so is my doctor. It is because of his insistence that I sometimes force myself to get on the thing. Still, once I am done with a workout I do feel great and glad I did it. The doctors have also told me I shouldn’t go crazy trying to lift heavy things so I guess I’m stuck with it since I’d never be able to get it out onto the lawn for a yard sale.

Gullfoss is a grand waterfall and is one of Iceland’s more famous and popular natural attractions. We were almost blown away by gale force winds while we were there. Gullfoss means “golden falls because the glacial sediment turns the falls golden in the sunlight. Ice still surrounded the falls and the mist turned to ice and stung our faces. In the summer months tourists hike down along the falls and feel the roar of the water up close. “Iceland, really? yes it is true. Charlie and I went to Iceland to compete in Iceland’s premier Worldloppet cross-country race on May 2nd. May 2nd is our friend Wes’ birthday and last summer he asked us to go with him and his wife Linda to celebrate by skiing in the Fossavtnsgangan in the Wild West Fjords of Iceland. Iceland’s Fossavtnsgangan is the last event of the year on the Worldloppet race calendar. The first event for next year’s calendar is the Ushuaia Loppet on August 8th, in Argentina. The USA Worldloppet event is the American Birkebeiner in Wisconsin and Canada’s Gatineau Loppet held in Gatineau Park near Ottawa. We flew out of Boston on Thursday night via WOW airlines. This is a new discount Icelandic airline that is no frills; you even have to pay for water. The five hour flight went by quickly and their new Airbus was nice (its carpet reads WoW and when leaving the plane

it reads Mom). In Iceland it is four hours earlier so we arrived at 4:30 am on Friday. From the Iceland international airport (KEF) we took a 45 minutes taxi ride to the domestic airport in Reykjavik (RKV). We waited with a few Russian skiers outside in the cold wind for more than an hour for the small airport to open. About 15 minutes before our 8am flight they opened up the desk, grabbed our luggage, gave us a seat assignment and had us walk on to the plane. I slept for the one hour flight to Isafjordur (IFJ). The airfield is on the water of the fjord. We rented

a four wheel drive Suzuki and loaded all our luggage and skis into the small rig. We drove around the water to the small village on the other side. We picked up our race registration; the race would start in less than 24 hours. We went to a bakery and had coffee and sandwiches. The small shop was packed with skiers from all over the world. We visited the ski shop in town that was also packed tight with skiers wanting to learn the local pros’ wax recommendations. Some people dropped off their skis and paid $100 to have the

Obamacare Exchanges on Life Support At a recent White House science fair celebrating inventors, a Girl Scout who helped design a Legopowered pageturning device by Michelle Malkin asked PresiSyndicated Columnist dent Obama what he had ever thought up or prototyped. Stumbling for an answer, he replied: “I came up with things like, you know, health care.” Ah, yes. “Health care.” Remember when the president’s signature Obamacare health insurance exchanges were going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, the remote control, jogger strollers, Siri, the Keurig coffee maker, driverless cars and Legos all rolled into one? The miraculous, efficient, costsaving, innovative 21st-century government-run “marketplaces” were supposed to put the “affordable” in Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Know-it-all bureaucrats were going to show private companies how to set up better websites (gigglesnort), implement better marketing and outreach (guffaw), provide superior customer service (belly laugh), and eliminate waste, fraud and abuse (LOLOLOL). You will be shocked beyond belief, I’m sure, to learn that Obamacare exchanges across the country are instead bleeding money, seeking more taxpayer bailouts and turning everything they touch to chicken poop. Wait, that’s not fair to chicken poop, which can at least be composted. “Almost half of Obamacare exchanges face financial struggles in the future,” The Washington

Post reported last week. The news comes despite $5 billion in federal taxpayer subsidies for IT vendors, call centers and all the infrastructure and manpower needed to prop up the showcase government health insurance entities. Initially, the feds ran 34 state exchanges; 16 states and the District of Columbia set up their own. While private health insurance exchanges have operated smoothly and satisfied customers for decades, the Obamacare models are on life support. Oregon’s exchange is six feet under -- shuttered last year after government overseers squandered $300 million on their failed website and shady consultants who allegedly set up a phony website to trick the feds. The FBI and the U.S. HHS inspector general’s office reportedly have been investigating the racket for more than a year now. In the People’s Republic of Hawaii, which has been a “trailblazer” of socialized medicine for nearly four decades, the profligate state-run exchange demanded a nearly $30 million cash infusion to remain financially viable after securing $205 million for startup costs. The Hawaii Health Connector accidentally disconnected hundreds of poor patients’ accounts and squandered an estimated 8,000 hours on technological glitches and failures. Enrollment projections were severely overinflated like a reverse Tom Brady scandal. After failing to secure a bailout, Hawaii announced this week that its exchange would be shut down amid rising debt. In Maryland, a state audit found that its health insurance exchange “improperly billed the federal government $28.4 million as former Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration struggled to launch

Political Posturing Kills Good Legislation On Thursday, May 14, the New Hampshire State Senate took up two important life bills. HB 403 would have repealed the current by Jane Cormier unconstitutional Hooksett, NH. Abortion Buffer Zone law here in NH. This bill recently passed the NH House, but was unfortunately, killed in the NH State Senate by two Republican senators, Sen. Nancy Stiles and Sen. Jerry Little. The vote was 12-12 upon which Republican State Senator Jeb Bradley (sponsor of the original Buffer Zone bill) quickly motioned to table the bill, thereby effectively killing the bill. In July 2014, the US Supreme Court unanimously voted down the Massachusetts Buffer Zone law as unconstitutional. The NH law is strikingly similar and is already being challenged in the court system. By repealing this law, the NH State Senate could

have potentially saved the NH taxpayer millions of dollars in litigation costs while supporting our Constitutional First Amendment rights. In Massachusetts, litigation costs were over $1.2 million in payment of just the plaintiff attorney fees. One has to wonder why Republicans have so much difficulty supporting their own platform. Republicans in the NH State Senate enjoy a majority (14 -10). The NH GOP platform is very pro-life and pro-liberty. This type of voting is just inexplicable. Rep. Kathleen Souza, R-Manchester, the prime sponsor of House Bill 403, which would have repealed the law, said this vote could be very expensive for the state and others involved. “It’s a question of do we settle it now here in New Hampshire, or later and at greater expense in Washington,” Souza said. “I think the outcome will be the same. I am confident.” What an opportunity lost. See cormier on 40

Foreign Policy is Domestic Policy, Rubio Advises ... continued metzler from 1

place…turmoil across the world can impact American families almost as much as turmoil across town. Today as never before, foreign policy is domestic policy, ”Rubio advised. Regarding the incumbent Obama Administration, the Senator stressed, “From his reset with Russia, to his open hand to Iran, to his unreciprocated opening to Cuba, he has embraced regimes that systematically oppose every principle our nation has long championed. “ Rubio added, “This deterioration of our physical and ideological strength has led to a world far more dangerous than when President Obama entered office.” The Senator stressed, “We’ve seen China rapidly expand its military capabilities and take aggressive action in the South and East China seas. We’ve seen North Korea expand its nuclear arsenal and continue its brutal human rights violations.” Rubio put special focus on Islamic Iran, “we’ve seen Iran expand its influence throughout the Middle East and threaten to annihilate Israel as it moves closer to a nuclear weapons capability.” He added that President Obama’s proposed deal with Tehran “will likely lead to a cascade of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East and could force Israel to take bold action to defend itself.” As to the pending nuclear deal with Iran, Senator Rubio warned

“President Obama’s desperation to sign a deal, any deal, has caused him to elevate politics over policy, legacy over leadership, and adversaries over allies.” Significantly Senator Rubio said that the U.S. should have offered support for Iran’s “Green Revolution” democracy movement which rose in reaction to the Islamic Republic’s fraudulent presidential elections in 2009. Rubio, the charismatic son of poor Cuban immigrants, spoke of “Cuban dissidents devastated by the President’s concessions to the Castro regime for nothing in return.” He emphasized the importance of U.S. policy towards Latin America, something largely neglected by the current Administration. Addressing the challenge from presumptive Democrat Party nominee Hillary Clinton, the Florida Republican opined, “We simply cannot afford to elect as out next president one of the leading agents of this administration’s foreign policy, a leader from yesterday whose tenure as Secretary of State was ineffective at best and dangerously negligent at worst. The stakes of tomorrow are too high to look to the failed leadership of yesterday.” He did not mention Hillary by name, nor did he address the Benghazi, catastrophe or the current Clinton cash scandals. Rubio presented his three-pillar plan which focuses on American strength through military

modernization and refunding, second, the Protection of the American economy in a globalized world which would include signing the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The third point would be moral Clarity regarding America’s core values. He stated, “Just as Reagan never flinched in his criticisms of the Soviet Union’s political and economic repressions, we must never shy away from demanding that China allow true freedom for its 1.3 billion people. Nor should we hesitate in calling the source of atrocities in the Middle East by its real name, radical Islam.”

This is an early stage on the long road to the presidential primaries and then the 2016 election campaign. Yet, Rubio’s clear, if hawkish, stance offers a coherent policy platform. He’s a serious contender for a marathon which ends at the White House on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. ********************** John J. Baltimore, A Great Society Failure Thomas Sowell is on vacation this week. President Barack Obama responded to the Baltimore by Rich Lowry Syndicated Columnist riots with a heartfelt bout of self-righteous hectoring. Supposedly, we all know what’s wrong with Baltimore and how to fix it, but don’t care enough. Not only is this attitude highhanded, it rests on a flagrantly erroneous premise. President Obama doesn’t have the slightest idea how to fix Baltimore. His solutions fall back on liberal bromides going back 50 years. Dating back to the Kerner Commission after the riots of the 1960s, the left’s go-to solution to urban problems has been more social programs. Since then, we’ve gotten more social programs -- and just as many urban problems. Exhibit A is Baltimore itself. The city hasn’t been “neglected.” It has been misgoverned into the ground. It is a Great Society city that bought fully into the biggovernment vision of the 1960s, and the bitter fruit has been corruption, violence and despair. This is a failure exclusively

of Democrats, unless the root causes of Baltimore’s troubles are to be traced to its last Republican mayor, Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, who left office in 1967. And it is an indictment of a failed model of government. The city has been shedding jobs and people for decades, including in the 1990s when the rest of the country was booming. Baltimore is a high-tax city, with malice aforethought. “Officials raised property taxes 21 times between 1950 and 1985,” Steve Hanke and Stephen Walters of Johns Hopkins University write in The Wall Street Journal, “channeling the proceeds to favored voting blocs and causing many homeowners and entrepreneurs -- disproportionately Republicans -- to flee. It was brilliant politics, as Democrats now enjoy an eightto-one voter registration advantage.” To counterbalance the taxes, they note, developers need to be lured to the city with subsidies, and the developers, in turn, contribute to politicians to stay in their good graces. This makes for fertile ground for the city’s traditional corruption. At the same time, the city has failed at the basic functions of government. Mayor Kurt Schmoke, in See Lowry on 40

New Hampshire is winning the race... as it seems, in beer brewing and consumption of the same. We are #1 and proud of it! It is always something that is in flux and needing attention. But that is where you all come in... looking for the best beer in NH. As Smuttynose has consistently led the NH brew scene with exciting creations, as consumers, we are just so envious of their ability. Within the new brewery in Hampton, there lies creative genius in brewing that can appeal to every customer who gains in their efforts. It is said that their brew ‘nerds’ live offsite in a place where they constantly try to come up with new and innovative ideas for recipes to please their customers. You can find out more about their offerings on www.facebook.com/Smuttynose or at their website www.smuttynose.com This series on Smuttynose draws attention to their creations and lets you know of what they are brewing up. “S’muttonator” is in its second season of production. As a home brewer, this beer is especially interesting. It exemplifies what a brew smells like when you are brewing. This is to say that when you are brewing, the malt and hops combine to make an especially wonderful aroma. This essence is captured by this beer. If

you have never smelled this experience, you will otherwise truly love this brew. At 9.8% ABV, S’muttonator will bring you to a new level of appreciation. Its malty mouthfeel and balance between hops and malt will captivate your senses. Poured into a generous pint glass, S’muttonator settles down somewhat quickly and with a frothy off-white head, gives way to a gorgeous deep amber beer which is fruity to the nose and maintains its sweetness forward of any hop note throughout. This beer is rich in flavor, aromatics and is well suited to pondering the day or a nice full-bodied meal. This is one of my favorite Smutty Big Beers and I will con-

tinue to enjoy it when available. With the many other offerings from Smuttynose, you will always find it at Case-n-Keg, 5 Mill St, Meredith. Most on BeerAdvocate.com have rated this beer from 2.80+ to 4.5 out of a score of 5. Officially, they rate this at 90 out of 100 which is an ‘outstanding’ notation. Smuttynose continues to produce beautiful brews and S’muttonator is a ‘must-have’ bottle in your collector series! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com.

Woodpeckers and mourning doves, Oh My! It’s that time of year when baby birds seem to hatch overnight. With them come the daily calls to our store asking for assistance with “orphans.” Specifically customers are concerned about three things: abandoned, fallen or hungry baby birds. Our kind hearts can have devastating results in regards to baby birds. We want to hold, cuddle and protect them like a child. However, has any human child ever walked on the very first attempt? Learning to crawl is part of the education process that our sons and daughters practice before they can walk or run on their own. For birds, the flying process is also a step-bystep procedure. A baby bird’s first venture out of the nest is always a short flight. The ground will be the eventual destination and this is where many people find these baby “orphans”, right at this point of the learning process. If the baby bird on the ground has feathers, it already is a fledgling and is supposed to be out of the nest learning survival skills. The parents likely are hovering in a nearby bush, keeping a watchful eye on their offspring as it hops around. This would be a good time to keep your cat indoors. Even if you haven’t seen the parents near the nest for a while, the nestlings have not nec-

Adults often leave for hours to forage for food. It’s easy to miss their return unless you have the nest within your sight throughout the day. If the baby bird on the ground is covered with down, it’s a nestling and belongs back in the nest. If you can’t find the nest, it’s ok to substitute a container filled with dried leaves. Put the nestling down in the middle and hang it close to where you found the bird. I like to use an old spaghetti colander as the container. It is easy to fill with grass clippings and yet provides drainage in wet weather. It is strong enough to tie to tree branches and can be reused for future needs. Do not fear that bird parents will a b a n d o n the baby bird due to a human scent. In fact, birds have practically no sense of smell. They have tremendous senses of sight and sound, but smell is ju st n o t o n e of its strengths. The

myth about abandonment of baby birds due to human touch was started decades ago to stop children from picking up baby fledgSee bird calls on 16

and sand together. Over time, Mother Nature washes away the black asphalt from the surface and you see the different colored pieces of stone and sand. When you then fill the crack in your blacktop with a monotone-colored product such as deep-black caulk, that black line stands out like a sore thumb. My second-to-last blacktop crack filler was a special caulk that had small pieces of silica sand in it and was extremely sticky. I installed some on my drive five years ago and it looked pretty good for about three years, but then it started to succumb to the stresses of harsh New Hampshire winters and the punishing ultraviolet rays of the sun. When I installed it, I did push some small stones into the gooey caulk to help disguise the repair, but you could still see it if you looked closely. Over the years I’ve tried many different products looking for the Holy Grail of crack fillers. I believe I may have found it. The material is a semiliquid epoxy that’s in a regular caulking tube.

It’s battleship gray in color and it contains very fine silica sand in it. The caulk-tube design is unique because it comes with a long nozzle that blends the two epoxy components as you squeeze the caulk gun handle. Most epoxies have extremely high tensile strength and can resist strong pulling or bending forces. This makes them ideal for blacktop crack fillers because asphalt is a flexible pavement that does move. Using this material is caveman simple. You simply cut off the tip of the caulk tube above the threads, screw on the long nozzle and start to squeeze the gun handle. You can see the two-part epoxy start its journey down the nozzle, and it mixes as it travels to the tip. The secrets to success are simple. I made sure my driveway was dry and I brushed out the cracks, removing all debris to a depth of 1 inch. I allowed the sides of the crack to dry. While doing this I spent time along the edges of my driveway gathering loose, clean stones. I made sure I got stones of all different sizes and colors to match what I saw in my blacktop. The size of the stones ranged from lima bean down to the size of a peppercorn. I also swept up a generous amount of clean sand from my driveway.

These components are what you use to disguise the epoxy. I’ve used epoxy for years to repair all sorts of things and I know it works well to bond things to concrete. Blacktop is nearly identical to concrete because the stones and sand in blacktop are the same used to make concrete. I applied the epoxy carefully into the crack, making sure I left it about 1/8 inch below the surface. I found it best to caulk about 1 foot of crack at a time. While the epoxy was fresh, I carefully embedded the stones into it, pushing them into the product and making them flush with the adjacent stones. I made sure to mix the sizes so everything looked like it was original. Once most of the epoxy was covered with stones, I then broadcast the sand over the crack. The sand completely hid the gray epoxy, making it invisible. I’m very confident I won’t be repairing any blacktop cracks for a very long time! Try it yourself and see.

You Know; Dorothy is Right! Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian, Theologian, Philosopher, Physician, Nobel Peace Prize 1952: “I by Niel Young have alAdvocates Columnist ways held firmly to the thought that each one of us can do a little to bring some portion of misery to an end. ************************ Barack Hussein Obama, Nobel Peace Prize 2009, worse president ever, created revival of race wars, put small businesses out of business who did not kneel to special laws for different people, ruined the dream of being successful, by his war on inequality by redistributing wealth from those who are educated and willing to work hard for what they have. Meanwhile there will be plenty of misery through law and executive orders! ************************ Edmund Burke, Irishborn British statesman, parliamentary orator, and political thinker: “All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing. And for far too many Americans that is just what they are doing! Albert Einstein Physicist and Professor, Nobel Prize 1921: “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. ************************ Dorothy Thompson 1894-1961:When liberty is taken away by force it can be restored by force. When it is relinquished voluntarily by default it can never be recovered. Exactly, Dorothy!

My friend former Representative Fran Wendelboe now pens a biweekly op-ed in The Concord Monitor. Here is one paragraph from Fran’s hard-hitting Sunday 5/17 piece: Planned Parenthood’s Mother’s Day message last Sunday was the same kind of in your face, spitting in the wind type of public statement that went beyond tacky and bad taste to reprehensible to many Mothers, and not just pro-life ones. In a series of four cards, celebrating mothers across the globe, Planned Parenthood urged their supporters to share their favorite card on Facebook. One quoted “Being a mother makes me very appreciative for our rights: all women should have the choice to do what they want with their own body. Another proclaimed, “I’m grateful for Roe V. Wade, I’m grateful for birth control, I’m grateful for quality health coverage. And I’m thankful for the women before me who’ve fought for and defended the right to be a mom by choice. While so many mourn those millions of unborn children, is it really smart to rub salt in the wound? Women who have lost children to illness or accident always have a really tough time when Mother’s Day rolls around. How do you think those grieving mothers felt seeing planned parenthood celebrating their supporters being able to end the life of their unborn child? ************************ Reading thesignal.com last week reminded me of that monster Philadelphia murderer Gosnell. “Today marks the second anniversary of the conviction of Kermit Gosnell, the late-term abortionist who brutalized women and routinely killed living, breathing infants in his rundown West Philadelphia clinic.

“The House of Representatives has voted YES on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, H.R. 36, which would limit late-term abortions after 20 weeks, include stronger informed consent requirements and additional protections for children born alive after failed abortions. “Gosnell is currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in the deaths of three infants who were born alive after botched abortions. Among more than 200 other criminal counts, he was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, a 41-year-old woman who died from an overdose of anesthetic drugs during an abortion procedure. Where is that Republican in Washington, D.C. who will represent me, and say NO to funding abortions with our money? It may be the woman’s body, but it is OUR money, and this is not a health problem.I thought this was settled two years ago. Well, just another reason to hate politics. You know what, I did learn something from this fiasco. When you are a fellow republican and need encouragement, don’t call Kelly Ayotte! Did you see her on TV last Friday night? I would have said, Kelly did not, that Cong Giunta will work through this reoccurring problem, and there is so much to worry about with the job at hand; Obama’s plan to ruin America, Kelly voting wrong way too often, Senators trying to use Obamacare as their health insurance carrier (right Kelly?), Illegal Aliens in our country to harm us as a group, or randomly, the women’s club where ladies form both sides of the isle in the Senate have their girls club when voting on important issues, and of course there was the Scott Brown thing.

through the Lake Explorer Quest?! Individuals/families who explore three waterbodies by canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or other paddle boat, and document their explorations with New Hampshire Lakes Association (NH LAKES) will earn an official Lake Explorer Quest patch. Participants must also certify that they practiced the “Clean, Drain & Dry method for preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species and implemented safe boating practices on each excursion. Get Some Fresh Air And Exercise! By spending time in nature we increase our connection to it, thereby increasing our tendency towards stewardship and protecting our natural world. Also, paddling is a fun way to get some exercise! Studies have shown that today’s youth are experiencing a “nature deficit which can be detrimental to physical and mental development. Children who spend time outdoors are healthier and more creative, have better concentration, and get better grades.

Stop The Spread Of Invasive Species! Another purpose of the Lake Explorer Quest program is to promote the “Clean, Drain & Dry practice to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Yes, even paddlers can transport invasive species from waterbody to waterbody, so please consistently and thoroughly inspect, clean, drain and dry your canoe, kayak, or other paddle boat, before and after boating. Here’s How To “Clean, Drain & Dry Your Paddle Boat: Clean: Inspect your boat rudders, hull, cockpit, storage compartments and gear thoroughly and remove all dirt, plants, and other materials. Dispose of these in a trash can or upland area where they won’t be washed into a nearby waterbody. Don’t forget to inspect and clean your paddles and anchor, too! Even better, wash your boat with clean water – the higher the pressure and higher the temperature of the water the better – just be sure that the rinse water does not flow into a nearby waterbody. See quest on 19

19

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, May 21, 2015 quest from 18

Drain: Tip your boat to drain out all water from the interior and hatches. Dry: It’s best to allow your boat and gear to dry for at least 5 days before launching into another waterbody. If you don’t have 5 days, it is especially important to pressure wash your boat and then wipe down the inside and outside of the boat, all paddles and gear with a towel before visiting another waterbody.

Be Safe! And, finally, another purpose of the Lake Explorer Quest program is to promote paddling safety. It is very important to follow safety procedures and guidelines while boating. Here are a few basic safety tips: Before setting out on your paddling adventure… Let someone at home know where you are going. Check the weather forecast to ensure that storm weather is not predicted. Pack a map of where you are going (maps of many NH waterbodies are available from the NH Fish & Game Department). Pack lots of drinking water and snacks, cell phone, first aid kit, and your life jacket. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear bright colored clothes and appropriate footwear (closed-toe shoes are best). Put on sunscreen, sunglasses, and a widebrimmed hat. When Paddling: Always wear your life jacket. In areas of high motorboat traffic, stay near the shore, and approach waves head-on or at a slight angle to avoid capsizing. Avoid paddling near hazards in the water (including logs, rocks, low bridges). Stay hydrated and reapply sunscreen periodically. Paddle to shore if stormy weather approaches. If the boat capsizes, don’t panic. If in a current, keep your feet pointed downstream and keep them off the bottom to avoid

foot entrapment. Stay upstream of the boat to avoid getting pinned between the boat and a rock or log. If you are too far to swim the boat to shore, you’ll need to flip your boat right side up.

Bring New Warmth To Your Hearth...

Where To Go? Through the Lake Explorer Quest, you are welcome to paddle any lake or pond of your choice in New Hampshire. To earn your Lake Explorer Quest patch: It’s easy and fun! Here’s how: Explore three New Hampshire lakes or ponds by canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or other paddle boat. Before and after paddling, implement the “Clean, Drain & Dry” practice to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Practice paddling safety while on your excursion. Document your visits on the official Lake Explorer Patch Request Form – you can download your form at www.nhlakes.org/lakeexplorer-quest. Once you have explored three lakes or ponds, forward your completed form to NH LAKES by email or mail. You will receive your Lake Explorer Patch and certificate of completion from NH LAKES in the mail! For more information about the Lake Explorer Quest, visit www.nhlakes. org/lake-explorer-quest. Have fun while creating wonderful family memories on New Hampshire’s lakes and ponds! NH LAKES thanks the Dorr Foundation for their support of this program. The New Hampshire Lakes Association (NH LAKES) is a member-supported, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting New Hampshire’s lakes and their watersheds. Like NH LAKES on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. To receive NH LAKES monthly eNews blast, Shorelines, full of interested lake-related information, sign up at www. nhlakes.org.

Build a Boat This Summer With The New Hampshire Boat Museum Have you ever dreamed of making your own boat for summer use but didn’t know how? Then the New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro’s popular Boat Building Program is perfect for you. This summer the Museum is offering two sessions of intensive boat building classes geared for novices who want to make either a canoe, kayak, or Bevin’s Skiff. Adult classes also offer the chance to make paddleboards and Optimist sailboat dinghies, but these two popular options are already sold out for the 2015 season. Thanks to grants from a number of donors, scholarships are available for students in the Youth Program and families with children who participate in the Adult/Family Program. The scholarships are for youth or families who might not otherwise be able to participate due to financial considerations. The deadline to signup for Boat Building is June 1st. After that date, prices will go up. To learn more about the classes, costs, or the scholarships, visit the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org. Or call the Museum at 5694554. The boats, which Museum volunteers start for the students over the winter, are from kits. You have the choice of building a •One-person canoe •One-person kayak (max 160lbs) •11’ 6” Bevin’s Skiff Costs vary, depending on the boat you chose. Current Museum members get a discount. The Boat Building classes give you a great value because you create your own boat at a low cost and learn about boats and boat building from excellent teachers. The two sessions avail-

sion a special picnic and launching will be held on Lake Wentworth. The class runs from 9am-3pm Monday - Friday. In each class you are taught the safe use of hand tools and small power tools by expert instructors, with plenty of individual assistance by volunteers. All materials and tools are supplied. You don’t have to be a “woodworker. Through hard work and the help of our volunteers you will create your own beautiful finished boat you will be proud to take out on the lakes and rivers when you finish the class. Thanks to generous donors, a large number of area youth have been able to take the course over the past nine years. To date the following donors have generously contributed to the Boat Building Scholarship Fund: the Wolfeboro Lions Club, Lois Warner, Wolfeboro Rotary Club, Tom and Rose McNamara, Chris and Darcey Bartel,

All OHRV trail openings are dependent on conditions. Visit www.nhstateparks. org/experience/atving/ trail-information.aspx for a complete list of trail

openings. “What really makes Ride the Wilds unique is that it provides a direct connection to many of northern New Hampshire’s fantastic attractions, lodging, dining and shopping opportunities, said Karl Stone, Marketing Manager for New Hampshire Grand. “To that end, Ride the Wilds has played a monumental role in driving economic activity throughout Coos County.

Ride the Wilds is not just for those who own OHRVs. Several businesses along the Ride the Wilds trail network offer OHRV rentals, all necessary safety equipment, and guided OHRV tours. For information on the Ride the Wilds trail network, where to rent an OHRV, or to enjoy a guided tour, please visit RidetheWilds.org.

the Wilds trail network from other OHRV destinations in the country is not just the sheer size of the trail network, but the fact that the network provides easy and convenient access for riders looking to hit the trails, and also stop at restaurants, local shops, gas stations and other locations on main roads, said Harry Brown, President of the North Country OHRV Coalition, the organization that facilitates the Ride the Wilds initiative. “The interconnected access, the endless riding opportunities and the breathtaking beauty of northern New Hampshire truly makes Ride the Wilds one-of-a-kind. The grand opening celebration will run from 11 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, May 23, at Jericho Mountain State Park Warming Hut in Berlin, with the drawing to take place at 1 PM. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase right up until 1 PM. Food and beverages will be made available by the Androscoggin Valley OHRV Club and the Androscoggin Valley Chamber of Commerce. Raffle tickets cost $15, and all proceeds will support Ride the Wilds. For more information and to purchase OHRV raffle tickets in advance of the grand opening celebration, visit www. nhgrand.com/ride-thewilds/raffle2015.aspx.

“Ride the Wilds is a volunteer-based operation that generates its own funds through local fund raising, various foundations, and the New Hampshire Trails Bureau’s Grants in Aid and Recreational Trails Program, to support the incredible trail system— all at no cost to users, Brown said. “Expenses mount quickly on a trail network of this magnitude, including signage, maintenance equipment,

pened. Some say it was a gentleman named Francis Hopkinson, A New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who designed the flag and there are other theories as well. We may never know the exact origins of our flag, but we will always realize

its importance. Also important to the American Flag is how it is presented; the etiquette of it. The do’s and don’t’s of Flag etiquette has sometimes been debated as vigorously as to its creation. As the warm, more temperate weather, is now upon us again and some of the more significant holidays celebrating our nation’s history are ap-

proaching, more and more American flags will be unfurled in front of homes and businesses throughout America. Some folks, though not intentionally, may be displaying the flag incorrectly. Though displaying the American Flag is a symbol of pride, there are guidelines, according to the U.S Flag Code, that need to be followed in order to pres-

east and west street or to the east in a north and south street. • When the flag is displayed in a manner other than being flown by a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out, When displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right (the observer’s left). When displayed in a window, it should be displayed in the same way with the union or blue field to the left of the observers in the street. •When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff should be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender. There are a few obvious don’ts to flag etiquette that have been forgotten by some over the years •Don’t dip the U.S. Flag for any person, flag or vessel. •Don’t let flag touch the ground, •Don’t fly the flag upside down except in case of emergency. •Don’t carry the flag flat or carry things in it. •Don’t use the flag as clothing. •Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.

•Don’t use the flag as a cover. •Don’t fasten or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free. •Don’t use the flag as decoration. Use the bunting with the blue on top, the white, then red. The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer fit for display it should be destroyed in a dignified way, usually by burning. (Many local VFW groups will take care of the disposal of unusable flags.)

There are other rules of etiquette when it comes to the U.S. Flag and we know we haven’t covered them all here. We just hope that this will help to answer some questions you may have had when it comes to the upcoming celebrations of our nation. Have a great Memorial Day and let’s not forget the real meaning of the sacrifice made by so many so we all can have the freedom to display our flags proudly.

The church is designed to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland’s landscape. shop wax their skis. Next we were off to find our Hostel and we had to drive through a 6 mile long tunnel under a mountain to another fjord. 3 miles of the tunnel was a single lane with pullouts every tenth of a mile, crazy. Our hostel was located in the tiny fishing village of Flateyri and only opened to host us for the race. Tourist season doesn’t begin for another month. Eleven skiers from Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA shared the house with two bathrooms; bunk beds for everyone. Truly it was wonderful and the sun didn’t set until 11:30 pm (sorry no Northern Lights when

the sun barely sets). The next morning the ride back through the tunnel (we had the right of way this time) and the bus ride up to the start line were exciting. The wind was blowing and it was snowing in the mountains. We learned that the 50k (32 miles) race would be two laps of 25k for our safety instead of one lap deep into the mountains. Wes and I joined the 9 am mass start for the 50k and we skied up into the blizzard. At times the long line of skiers disappeared and I could barely see the person in front me. The tracks blew away. Wes and I skied together and See patenaude on 35

before he skied off ahead of me he told me he might drop out after the first lap if the blizzard continued. Charlie entered the 25k and Linda the 10k and their start was delayed to send the groomer back out to try re-set tracks. A funny thing happened just before I started out on my second lap. The sun came out for only 10 minutes. Wes confessed the sun was out just long enough to make him decide to do the second lap. In fact the second lap was Wes and Linda enjoying the après cross-country ski race tougher than the first. “Cake Buffetâ€? at Iceland’s first ever Worldloppet event held I skied hard at my own

pace, enjoyed warm energy drinks and kept on kicking and gliding. I was comfortable and having fun and I hoped Charlie and my friends were too. At the finish line I could hear Charlie and Linda cheering. My time was four and half hours, a good time for a tough ski and Wes finished about

The Hot River and the Steaming Valley are reached after hiking two miles up and over a mountain. Charlie (right photo) was the happiest man on earth floating in that river. his age group. This was no surprise to him since he was certain everyone that finished ahead of him was younger. But during the 50k awards when my name was called for 3rd place in my age group, we all almost fell out of our chairs! I learned if I was a minute faster I would have been 2nd and if I was a minute slower I would have been 4th. Ha! I beat Norwegians was my first thought. I guess snowshoeing all over NH’s mountains was good blizzard marathon training. At the same venue in the evening we attended the “fish buffet”. Now the gym was turned into a lovely banquet hall with the tables covered with white table clothes and set for dinner. Local fish prepared using different Icelandic recipes were the delicious fare. Our new friends from the hostel joined us and a group of skiers from Luxembourg filled our table. After the meal I confess we were all too tired and we skipped the dancing. The next morning we drove over the next mountain and around another fjord to reach the smaller village of Pingeyri, home of West Horses. We explained we wanted to ride their Icelandic Horses but we had to make the 3 pm flight back to Reykjavik. No worries, we helped round up the horses, we saddled up and we took off. Linda is the only one that rides horses. Charlie, Wes and I just did what we were told. Icelandic

horses look like shaggy rugged ponies and are the only horses in Iceland. No other horses are imported and if one leaves the island it cannot return. Our morning ride was a thrill. The horses carried us along the mountains, over snow, through rivers and along the fjord’s beach. I held on tight and managed not to fall off the sure footed trotting beast. Once in Reykjavik we rented a car and found our hotel. We walked all over the city, went up to the top of the famous church tower and enjoyed a fabulous meal down at the waters edge. We hit the road early again and were off to experience some of Iceland’s famous natural attractions. We hiked a couple miles up and over some big hills to reach the Steaming Valley and we soaked in the Hot River. Charlie and Wes went up close to a boiling pool and ran away quickly after it spit hot mud up in the air. We were lucky we had the place to ourselves and on our return we passed several dozen hikers making their way up. Next we drove to the Geyser and every 4 to 8 minutes the blue bubble formed and it exploded! After watching it blow a half dozen times we drove further to the grand waterfall, Gullfoss. The spectacular falls isn’t quite as big as Niagara Falls but they claim a See patenaude on 37

larger volume of water flows over Gullfoss. The temperature was cold and the gale force winds turned the mist into flying ice spears. The wind almost knocked us over. We drove back through a national park where 1,000 foot mountains looked like the tips of our Rocky Mountains, so sharp and white. We really made the most of our last full day in Iceland. The next morning we packed the car but before heading to the airport we decided we had a couple extra hours that we could smartly spend at the Na-

tional Icelandic Museum. Luckily for us the Museum not only houses many of its country’s earliest artifacts but has a fine café. We enjoyed a fine breakfast before touring the exhibits of early Viking settlers to the modern living in the city of Reykjavik. Charlie and I were home in New Hampshire before supper time on Tuesday. We enjoyed the short trip and brought home many good memories. Have Fun.

killing of a baby. HB 560 would have taken effect beginning at eight weeks of pregnancy while effectively exempting abortion from the law. NH currently has no fetal homicide statute on the books. Unfortunately, these two commonsense bills, HB403 and HB560 were thwarted in the NH State Senate for nothing but political posturing. Pro-life and proliberty voters were not well represented by some of those serving in the NH State Senate. Shame on them.

office for three terms beginning in the late 1980s, was notoriously soft on crime. As urban experts Fred Siegel and Van Smith write in City Journal, “During the ‘90s, tolerant Baltimore’s crime rate, much of it drug-fueled, rocketed upward (75 percent of the city’s murders were drugrelated); tough-on-crime New York’s plummeted. Under Mayor Martin O’Malley’s subsequent, more strenuous policing, malkin from 8

what would become one of the most troubled websites in the nation, The Baltimore Sun reported in late March. That’s in addition to the $90 million the state blew on technical problems. The state scrapped its junk website and forced enrollees to resubmit to the tortuous sign-up process all over again. Last week, federal prosecutors subpoenaed the Massachusetts Obamacare exchange after whistleblowers there exposed what a “technological disaster its “Health Connector program was. Boston’s Pioneer Institute senior fellow in health care, Josh Archambault, released a report on Monday detailing the “complete incompetence of the state’s

the crime rate dropped. But it is still a violent city. Baltimore has the fifth-highest murder rate among cities with a population of 100,000 or more. The schools, predictably, are a disaster, run by and for the teachers unions. On top of all this, twothirds of births in the city are out-of-wedlock. What is Obama offering in response to this deep, decades-long decline? Among other things, more pre-K education and

job training, even though these programs have a long history of ineffectiveness. The imperative in Baltimore should be to think and act anew. But the left’s takeaway will be that there’s an urgent need for more of the same, as Baltimore and places like it continue to rot.

health bureaucrats from Day One. But taxpayers would be lucky if incompetence were the only sin After firing the tech boneheads of CGI, the same company behind the federal healthcare.gov meltdown, Massachusetts officials “appear to have lied to the federal government to cover up mistakes made by both the state and the IT company. “In at least two instances we uncovered, Archambault revealed, what the state told the feds “was either in direct conflict with internal audits or highly improbable given what was being said in the audit and what whistleblowers said was happening at the time. As health care analyst Phil Kerpen of the free

market group American Commitment points out, Massachusetts “already had a functioning state health exchange but “after receiving $179 million from federal taxpayers to reconstitute it under Obamacare, “they were able to break that existing exchange beyond repair. An amazing feat. Lesson for inventive Scouts and students wondering about what people in Washington, D.C., prototype: Government bureaucrats don’t make things, kids. They break things.

work of “Super Charger” stations and “Destination Charger Stations.” As the name implies, super chargers replenish the electrical charge quickly, while destination charging stations invite Tesla owners to take a little more time at a destination or destinations along the way. As a further commitment to the electric vehicle public, Tesla, who underwrote the entire cost of the charging stations, also offers a universal charging option for non-Tesla owners. The end result, according to GM Frowery, is that all electric vehicle owning customers can make the Wolfeboro Inn their charging station of choice.

“Gordon”

Age: Sex: Breed:

Gordon came to the shelter as a stray in October and is still looking for a home. He would do best in a high energy home where he can be the only child - no cats, dogs, or young children. Gordon is an active boy who needs to work on his resource guarding, leash walking, and basic obedience. He is a friendly boy who would do best with someone who has lots of time for him and is willing to work with him on training and his basic manners. Because the shelter is overwhelming for him, Gordon is staying with a foster family.

Thanks to a partnership between Tesla Motors and the Wolfeboro Inn, customers who are driving electric vehicles can now make the Inn their charging station of choice.

Porter was designated a Humane Leader. Mr. Guinta has a pathetic environmental, animal, and wildlife protection record. He voted to reduce funding for the Endangered Species Act. The League of Conservation Voters rated him 11%, the Defenders

of Wildlife Action Fund gave him 10%, and the Sierra Club gave his failing performance the F it deserved. But over her three Congresses, Ms. Shea-Porter had a 100% rating from Defenders of Wildlife, 90%-100% from League of Conservation Voters, and was endorsed

by the Sierra Club. No matter how much Mr. Guinta tries to mislead his constituents, he can’t escape his consistently appalling environmental and wildlife record. Susan Mayer Lee, NH ,
