Beginning June 1st the League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Gallery will host a collection of native moth cocoons in tandem with Lucy’s jewelry. The four local moth species are within the Saturniidae family: Luna, Polyphemus, Cecropia, and Promethea moths. They are also known as the giant silk worm moths. The exhibit will feature a Lucite housing for cocoons in various stages, along with a body of work that celebrates the metamorphosis from cocoon to moth. Golden has focused on creating awareness of the environmental impact from the plight of these species, among others. Customers who purchase a piece from the Moth and Butterfly Collection by Lucy Golden will receive a silk moth cocoon along with care instructions. A portion of the sales from each piece sold from the Moth and Butterfly Collection by Lucy Golden will go to the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center to help promote environmental awareness. Should Have Been Me

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I can’t help but be jealous. After all, I’ve been hard at work for close to twenty years now, writing about my adventures as a Flatlander and working tirelessly trying to get Natives and Flatlanders a little bit closer to understanding each other and getting along. I’ve also been giving my sage advice to all Flatlanders who have come after me to help them fit in. (For example: Loud and pompous might work where you were from but it won’t accomplish much here.) Of course, I did all of this, not for my own sake, but for the sake of others. I haven’t been selfish about it, even if I have to say so myself. Still, it does sting a bit, well a lot, to have put in all that time and effort and then, just like that, to have someone else steal my thunder. I am, I have been told, pretty well recognized around New Hampshire as the “Flatlander. Having started groups like F.A.T.S.O (Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion, a winter support group) and running every two years for governor under the Flatlander Ticket, I have slowly, become a familiar face. Yet, on the national scene, I am not well known at all. It never upset me. I figured I was getting close and I would eventually break

3

through. But recently, the rug was pulled out right from under me as another Flatlander who has only lived here for nine months and from New Jersey to boot (sorry, growing up in New York there is that natural animosity) and got himself into the national limelight in a little over two minutes. Maybe you heard about it, maybe not. It was devastating to my psyche. I wasn’t sure how to feel. There I was watching him over and over again on TV ad nauseam and not just on the local news but on the national news as well. Soon it seemed he was being talked about everywhere as well on TV talking about it himself (It was something about a school board meeting and a book or something, I was so devastated, I can’t remember.) It was hard for me to hear that angry New Jersey accent coming from my television speakers in a discussion about something that happened in New Hampshire. He hadn’t even been here for a whole year of weather yet and he was suddenly, unfairly in my eyes, representing every Flatlander who had ever moved to New Hampshire. That should have been me yelling in my waning Long Island accent. It just wasn’t right. It was supposed to be my time. But soon that fifteen minutes of fame went away and the national news went to other stories and so did most of the rest of New Hampshire. Still, I felt betrayed. What had I done wrong that kept me from the national spotlight? Am I too nice of a guy? Do I need

to get angrier more? Yell louder? Be more boastful? Maybe I need to hire someone who has nothing else to do to follow me around with a video camera just in case a situation arises that I can use to my advantage and finally get on that national stage. If nothing happens I might end up with some cool YouTube videos. I probably won’t though. I guess I just don’t enjoy confrontation as much as some people. I don’t know. I only know that what I have been doing for the last nineteen years just hasn’t been working to get me in the national spotlight. I guess I’ll have to come up with a better plan, something controversial that might lift me into that fifteen minutes of fame as well. Of course, it would be important to utilize that fifteen minutes and not let it dissipate too quickly, if it comes at all. It’s always a good idea to have a couple of sneaky tricks up your sleeve to ride the next tiny wave in that miniscule ocean. We’ll see. In another way, I am kind of relieved. The pressure is off me now to be the first to reach that level. I can just keep on doing what I’ve been doing, keep my eye on the prize and let the universe sort it all out for me. Being second best can be a good thing. Force me to work a little harder and not sit back on my laurels. Now I have something to really shoot for. I feel better now, glad that I got the opportunity to talk this through with you. It’s nice how some things can be resolved by keeping calm and being patient. Thanks for listening. I’ll be quiet now.

To The Editor: For those of you who still think the Keystone Pipline will be good for this country try checking out a few of these companies - all associated with the Koch Brothers or their families. First one is Flint Hill Resources and the next is Oxbow Corporation owned by brother William. Flint Hill had a great enviromental record according to one article but another one listed all the fines, penalities and violations of environmental laws. From 1999 to 2003 they have paid over 400 million in fines for illegal dumping of numerous toxic

chemicals. Included were aviation fuel, ammonia into the Mississippi River, benzene, numerous coverups and export violations. Oxbow Corporation uses really dirty oil or tar sands to make Pet Coke which is being used instead of coal in coal burning plants. This might be one major reason that the Keystone is so important to them. It is junk and nobody knows what to do with it. It emits 38% more carbon by weight than coal and Oxbow handles 11 million tons of it per year. William is a big political contributor and might be the worse one of the lot. It is now showing up after being dumped in both Detroit and Chicago. Now we

have formaldehyde from fracking. That was granted waivers from the Federal Clean Air and Water Regulations by, what was called, the Halliburton Loophole” by, guess who, the Bush Cheney administration. One complaint is that we will not get any use from this oil. Most articles I’ve read mention it is just passing through on its way to China or India. It really might be the Pet Coke that is wanted. That along with the tax free profits to the Koch Brothers. Jon Hoyt Plymouth, NH.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, May 22, 2014

From The State House Bad Bill Blitz! The NH House was treated to a two day session this past week. And what a time it was! There were more than by Rep. Jane a few quesCormier tionable bills Belknap District 8 not to mention some outright BAD bills! Of course, this is only if you believe in First Amendment rights and accountable, small government which is fiscally conservative… SB 415 – transferring surplus revenues to the revenue stabilization reserve account. Simply put, this bill would transfer $15 million of unanticipated surplus funds from the 2012/2013 budget into the “Rainy Day Fund”. This money is not necessary to fund the 2014/15 budget and would boost the paltry $9.3 million currently in the “Rainy Day Fund” to a larger amount. This is important as it would help demonstrate to bond-rating agencies, New Hampshire fiscal conditions were looking more “favorable”. In light of the fact New Hampshire was recently downgraded, in part because of the dismal “Rainy Day Fund”, adding this amount to the fund would have shown some movement in raising this downgrade. Instead, the majority (151-127) voted to Interim Study this bill. (That means it probably will go NO WHERE and New Hampshire will just spend that $15 million. No problem – just move along.)

SB 120 – relative to political contributions and expenditures and relative to reporting by political committees. This bill is a MESS! While the supporters of SB 120 tell us it “increases transparency of our elections…”, it is dangerously broad and vague. By requiring political committee status for individuals and organizations choosing to engage in political speech, it is actually an attack on our First Amendment rights. Everyone knows this bill tries to make an end run around the Citizen’s United decision and is intended to stifle political speech by placing crippling paperwork on two or more people who wish to communicate their views to the public. It has a negative influence on smaller political groups who normally would not be required to file under Federal election law. Other bills such as these have already been litigated at the Supreme Court and found unconstitutional. But, our current majority in the House thought it prudent to pass this bill - knowing full well it will be legally challenged. Taxpayers will then have to pay to litigate SB 120, which like other bills before it, will also likely be found unconstitutional. Progressives love to spend taxpayers’ money – in this case, for absolutely nothing. Roll call was 186/119. You should check to see how your representative voted. SB 319 – relative to access to reproductive health care facilites. Again, the ideologues throw a bill at taxpayers which is destined to be contested in a

The VA’s Deadly Bureaucratic Drones At least 40 American veterans are dead thanks to bureaucratic delays at Veterans Affairs clinics. But you wouldn’t know it from VA Secretary Gen. by Michelle Malkin Eric Shinseki’s Syndicated Columnist bland and bloodless demeanor at a Senate hearing Thursday. He droned on like an apathetic office manager fielding complaints about the copier being jammed. Shinseki told the Senate panel he “can’t remember” getting warnings from federal watchdogs last fall about ghost clinics and doublescheduling schemes. He said he was “not aware” of explosive bookcooking allegations like the ones at a Fort Collins, Colo., VA facility, where employees were ordered to make their records show that veterans got appointments within 14 days of the day requested, whether or not it was true. In response to bipartisan disgust

with the VA’s serial incompetence and fatally long wait times, oblivious Shinseki blathered about “customer satisfaction surveys.” And when it came time to deliver his calculated sound bite about being “mad as hell” at mounting allegations of criminal fraud and neglect, Shinseki’s perfunctory tone echoed a jaded 411 operator: “City and state, please?” Asked whether VA employees who alter records should be fired, Shinseki’s deputy Robert Petzel said he didn’t know “whether that’s the appropriate level of punishment.” Shinseki interjected that a whopping 3,000 VA workers, including senior managers, had been “involuntarily removed” for misconduct last year -- only to admit that an unknown number of those had simply been reassigned or allowed to retire. In true paper-pusher form, the VA’s top brass have ordered yet another study to assess how and why the VA ignored years of other studies, reports and audits of the department’s waste, fraud and abuse. Showing even more tonedeafness, Shinseki bragged openly See malkin on 7

about his close friendship with top White House aide Rob Nabors, who is now overseeing the kabuki “review” of his department’s failures. Can you spell crony whitewash? Pressed on why he hadn’t reported illegal data falsification to the FBI, Shinseki demurred that it was the inspector general’s call, not his. In other words: The buck stops somewhere else. Attorney General Eric Holder hid behind the VA inspector general, too. There are no plans for a DoJ probe into the secret waiting lists at the Phoenix VA hospital, where scores of sick vets languished for months before perishing. Question: Why is activist zealot Holder so content to wait for the IG? Given this administration’s shady record of crushing whistleblowers, railroading IGs and replacing them with dirty lapdogs, Shinseki’s vow to “get to the bottom” of this latest deadly scandal while Holder and the FBI sit on the sidelines stinks to high hell. Taking care of the nation’s war veterans is an obligation that has existed since the days of the Continental Congress. But for decades, under both GOP and Democratic administrations, the men and women who served our country have been literally left to die by government caretakers. Fifteen years ago, I reported on VA bureaucrats who took better care of administrative buildings and vacant hospitals than their own patients. Back then, an in-

dependent General Accounting Office found that the agency was spending more than $1 million a day to sustain unneeded hospital buildings. Another $35 million was squandered annually to perform upkeep on empty space, including unused lots and warehouses, while vets were forced to file malpractice suits over substandard care. We “have created the damnedest country club in America,” one VA watchdog activist I quoted said at the time. “Whatever toys they want, they get. Nobody is watching what they spend these millions of dollars on, and obviously, no one cares.” Fifteen years later, it’s the same old, same old. More empty excuses, feckless denials and deadly red tape. The names change, but the game’s the same: “Support the troops” platitudes and photo-ops at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. “Screw the troops” in the bowels of the VA bureaucracy, where book-cookers were busy collecting bonuses instead of saving lives. And everyone at the top refuses to resign. It’s self-serving government as usual. I’d ask how “hope and change” is working out for the affected veterans. But they’re not around to answer. Their chilling silence speaks volumes. Michelle Malkin is the author of “Culture of Corruption: Obama and his Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks and Cronies” (Regnery 2010). The Height of Utopianism A political battle that is shaping up in San Francisco has implications for other communities across the country. The issue that will be on the by Thomas Sowell June ballot is Syndicated Columnist whether voter approval shall be required to change the height restrictions on buildings along the San Francisco waterfront. Like so many other political issues, this one is being debated in runaway rhetoric bearing no resemblance to reality. Former San Francisco City Attorney Louise Renne, for example, says that “the people” own the waterfront and therefore should be “consulted.” Really? Can one of “the people,” who supposedly own the waterfront, decide that he wants to sell his share of it and pocket the money? As for being “consulted,” how many of “the people” -- who have lives to lead, careers to pursue and families to take care of -- are going to study the economic and other complexities created by height restrictions? What we are really talking about are little coteries of selfrighteous busybodies, who have been elected by nobody, wrapping themselves in the mantle of “the people,” in order to oppose elected officials, who have been elected precisely in order to give such issues the professional attention they deserve, in a system of representative government. Height restrictions have serious economic implications that are not immediately obvious to those who do not look beyond rhetoric about “saving” this or “preserving” that. In a place with very high land prices, such as San Francisco, the difference between building a ten-story apartment building and being restricted to building a fivestory apartment building can be a big difference in what rent will have to be charged, when there are only half as many renters to cover the costs of the land. When a city cannot expand upward, its growing population must expand outward. That

means far more commuter traffic, from ever greater distances, to get to work in the city. Anyone who has seen the huge amount of traffic clogging the bridges into San Francisco, as early as 6 o’clock in the morning, will understand that such repercussions exact a price that goes beyond money to time lost in traffic and lives lost in traffic. None of these hidden costs of height restrictions is likely to be noticed, much less weighed, by those who speak or hear selfindulgent rhetoric about how the waterfront is a “treasure” that needs “careful and attentive stewardship” by the voters, as a San Francisco Examiner editorial put it. And just how many of those voters -- “the people” with jobs, homes and families to look after -- are going to have time to carry out this “careful and attentive stewardship”? Does anyone seriously believe that most people have time to be poring over maps, reports and statistics about the San Francisco waterfront? Is not the whole point of representative government that you cannot run a city, much less a state or a nation, as if you were having “town meeting democracy” in some little New England village, where virtually everybody knows everything that is important to that village? Nothing is easier than to rhapsodize about the waterfront as “a public resource beyond compare.” But, however impressive the San Francisco waterfront may be, no resource is “beyond compare.” Comparing -- weighing one thing against another -- is what rational decision-making is all about. Exempting what some segment of the population wants from the process of weighing alternatives is what rhetoricdriven political stampedes are all about. Ms. Renne’s assertion that those who own the waterfront should be the ones to make decisions about it is an argument for a policy the opposite of what she advocates. Constitutionally protected property rights, which have been seriously eroded by judicial “interpretation,” were meant to keep See Sowell on 16

As we approach our longawaited, warm spring season, you can be sure the conversation will turn to the black flies and mosquitoes that are a part of our landscape. Our attention span is short lived, however. Once the dog days of summer arrive, the topic will concern the stifling heat. Water, water everywhere,….but how do I provide this necessary ingredient into my backyard without encouraging the breeding of insects? Experienced backyard birders know that a reliable water source does wonders to attract all species of songbirds. Every bird needs water to survive, but not all birds eat bird seed. If you choose not to serve bird seed in the warm months, you can still attract those wild birds you love to see each and every day. Water is the answer. If you are concerned about mosquitoes, EEE or West Nile Virus, there are many solutions available to practically eliminate these insects from multiplying. There are many different types of mosquitoes and each species has its own method for egg-laying, hatching and maturing. However, one basic fact that is constant for all species - stagnant water is required for the maturation cycle. Standing water has an invisible, tight film on the surface upon which a mosquito lays its eggs. If you take away this surface film, the eggs sink to the bottom and do not survive. The simplest method to eliminate the chance of

Opening Celebration!

The simplest method to eliminate the chance of eggs hatching on water is to empty your bird baths twice per week. eggs hatching on water is to empty your bird baths twice per week. This is enough time to interrupt the egg hatching cycle. Moving water creates ripples that stop insects from trying to lay eggs. Without the surface film found only on stagnant water, eggs can not float and will not survive. There are many methods to create moving water. Drippers and fountains are the most common approach to this problem. Both choices create the rippling effect on surface water and are very attractive to songbirds. In order to keep your wild birds happy and content, your best solution is to imitate a river stream bed as best you can. A simple device is available that incorporates two small paddles which constantly move the water in all bird baths. The two batteries last a couple of months, eliminating the need for running electrical cords over your lawn area. Many people enjoy this option for creating ripples, attracting songbirds and stopping the spread of mosquitoes. Here is a marvelous, homemade solution. Put a sheppards hook next to your bird bath and hang an old watering can over the water area. Angle the

watering can in such a way so as to create a dripping effect into the bath. This makes an attractive solution to stagnant water and adds a visual appeal to your garden. It’s a wonderful conversation piece, as well. You do not have to give up attracting your birds in the warm seasons if you choose not to serve bird seed and feeders. The solution simply requires a new thought process. You will be amazed at the results each year. Enjoy your birds. Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. First Amendment & Right to Life for Veterans! E a c h day in this perpetual chaos of America brought to you by the Obama administration, by Niel Young Advocates Columnist we lose a little more freedom. Our Constitution, our rights, freedom of speech, freedom to own a firearm are being challenged. What is heart breaking is too many Americans have chosen to remain silent. Far too many have chosen to take the easy way and allow government to take care of all needs and decisions. MEMO TO ME:Never assume that your First Amendment is actually in place, even with people you trust. Your Right to Privacy is also in danger. If you are going to be vocal, and an activist, the Liberal Loons have you in their site. Given the opportunity the Loons will identify you Pro-GOD, anti-Obama, Love your country, they want to change it, you believe and love the idea that you can achieve goals set by you, by taking advantage of what an American may have available to them. Of course there are those who will place road blocks in your way. Obama gives you some options: if you are a student of capitalism, that may be acceptable, i f y o u willing to part with 60 or 70% of your earned dollars going to others in the name of “Social Justice”. You have heard of that, right? Not all is lost. Get a job working for the government. Benefits are great, no real expectation you will ever lose your job, in fact in some depart-

ments, you may not be expected to work! The Liberal Loons cannot control their favorite past time, trying to ruin anyone who has the courage to speak out against the most dangerous man in America, Hussein Obama. Good Lord people. The mouth of Rahm, and the other Obama Zombies including that nit wit ( VP Biden) get to call conservative Christian intelligent white women unkind words, and few dare say a word in the defense of those women. Name me one Republican US Senator who got drunk and drove his car off a bridge with a woman on the back seat, and left her to drown to save his own fat bleep. What about the Zombies who attack Sarah Palin and her family? The language I use in a private conversation in my yard, in my car, and in my home is nobody’s business. You Zombies can’t win an argument with logic, so they attack, and “spy” another’s conversation! After the November election, no matter which party holds the power, there will be a lot of bad language - from both u s e le s s p o l it i c a l p a r ties. There are many Black Americans who impress me and have my deepest respect - Hussein Obama is not one of them! I was going to research how many Liberal Loons have attacked Sarah Palin and the use of the word teabagger. Gave up the idea. I can visualize Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Lawrence O’Donnell. I was going to suggest that if Sarah were Black, and then remembered these miserable people will attack a Black American, if they are conservative, pro-life, and believe in

America’s success. ****************** On this Memorial Day as you visit graves of loved ones who may or may not have served, will you at any point have a feeling of sadness for those veterans who are stock-piled waiting for medical attention for weeks at a time at one of our VA Medical Centers? Investor’s Business Daily tells us: Abuse: The Pentagon tries to transfer convicted national security leaker BRADLEY Manning to a civilian prison to treat a gender disorder while veterans suffer and die waiting in vain on phony Veterans Administration lists. Or should we say Pvt. CHELSEA Manning, the name chosen by the convicted leaker of sensitive classified documents to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. Manning has asked for HORMONE THERAPY and to be able to live as a woman and the Pentagon is trying to help. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last month gave the Army approval to try to work out a transfer plan with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which, unlike the Defense Department, does provide such treatment to inmates, two Pentagon officials not authorized to speak on the record told the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C. Mr. Copeland of Wolfeboro, NH is under attack for using his First Amendment. I understand his anger. The Loons are willing to pay for a sex change, and to hell with the VETERANS.

are some ledges that must be scrambled up and over but it is possible to take a detour to avoid the steepest of the scrambles. The big summit is dandy! The views over the Big Lake of the Sandwich and Ossipee Ranges and beyond are magnificent. We were able to see Mount Roberts, part of the Ossipee Range, where our group had hiked together last year but the tippytop of Mount Washington was hiding beneath some clouds! The fire tower on nearby Belknap Mountain was easy to see and gave “us” Gunstock skiers a good point of reference. We all enjoyed the view and the camaraderie as we caught up with old

The middle of the Brook Trail was wet and muddy and there were herd paths in the woods that parallel the trail that were in better condition. Charlie and I tagged along behind our long line of friends. The brook crossings pro-

The rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit; in fact it seemed a fitting end of the outing to have had the rain wait until everyone was finished. I hoped the shower would pass quickly as I thought of the BRATTS working up on the ridge and of all the people on their way up whom we had passed on the trail. Hike For Bishop. Have fun!

awaiting a decision from the (you guessed it) Supreme Court. When speaking at the Senate hearing, I asked why this bill could not wait until the decision is made from the Supreme Court as the decision could be made any day now. If the Massachusetts law is struck down as unconstitutional, we could save taxpayers yet another court battle. This argument was also made in the House floor debate last week but the ideologues in the majority felt we had to have this buffer zone law NOW. The roll call vote was 162 – 100. Taxpayers – hope you are ready to pay. All in all, it was a rather depressing two days for fiscally responsible legislation. Feel-good legislation may be all the rage right now, but the time will come when we will have to PAY for this reckless legislation. And pay we will. Until of course, we say STOP. Let’s hope that time will be in our immediate future. Elections are fast approaching!

Stop by Skelley's Market today and enjoy some great food, Bailey's Bubble Ice Cream, a lobster roll or anything else you may need. You will be glad you did.

England Hillclimb Association Champions Kevin Gale from Sutton, NH, and Sherman Baumann from Moodus, CT. Also returning to Mt. Washington this year will be three very popular racers from New Hampshire who have competed in every Mt. Washington Hillclimb race since the event returned in 1990 – 14 events in all. These drivers include David Patten from Dunbarton, NH; Drew Young from Loudon, NH, and Don Taylor from Claremont, NH. All three drivers are regular competitors in the New England Hillclimb Championship which hosts hillclimb events on access roads at the Mt. Ascutney State Park, Burke Mountain State Park, Okemo Mountain Resort and Mt. Philo State Park – all of which are located in the state of Vermont. Taylor will be pulling double-duty at this year’s hillclimb as he’ll also serve as the event’s Chief Technical Inspector. The ever-popular Vintage Class meanwhile features a lineup of ten prestigious racing cars from the 1940s through the late 1970s. Although all vehicles featured in this class have played a significant role in motorsports history through the years, the 1958 Porsche Carrera-powered Volkswagen “Bathtub probably boasts the most Mt. cars entered. Driven to a record-setting time of 9 minutes and 13 seconds in 1961 by the legendary Bill Rutan from Connecticut, Rutan and the “Bathtub, as it had come to be known, returned to Mt. Although Rutan won’t be sitting behind the wheel of the “Bathtub when it return to Mt. How To Mix Concrete Like A Pro

~Fully Insured~

by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: I’m going to do an ambitious concrete project this summer pouring a long sidewalk. My initial results are disappointing. The finish I’m getting on my concrete is rough, and too many stones are at the surface. I wonder if I have my mix proportions wrong or what else may be the problem. Can you help me mix concrete like the pros do? Should I purchase an electric mixer? --Richard S., Lakeside, Calif. DEAR RICHARD: Your question brought back a flood of great memories. When I was a young teenager, I played and went to grade school with the Boncutter kids. Their dad, Mr. Boncutter, had a night job working at the manufacturing plant where bagged concrete was invented. It was the Sakrete plant in St. Bernard, Ohio. The plant manager allowed Mr. Boncutter to salvage spilled Portland cement that fell onto the floor as the sacks were filled. Mr. Boncutter used this Portland cement to pour a massive concrete apron, one small section at a time on a different day, in the rear of an apartment building he owned. He wanted to do it himself just like you do, and he had plenty of time. He also had some free material and free labor from his kids and their friends like me. I discovered at the ripe age of 13 how to mix concrete by hand and get it right. Please be aware that concrete is a very complex material, and

Here’s some concrete in a wheelbarrow that’s been mixed by hand and is nearly perfect in consistency. you could fill a small library with the technical books and papers written about all the aspects of it. For our discussion, we’ll limit ourselves to very basic concrete. Most concrete experts will probably agree on the following proportions of ingredients for a standard concrete mix: 3 parts stone; 2 parts medium or coarse, clean, washed sand; 1 part Portland cement and just enough water to make it a plastic mix. The stones, or aggregate, in the concrete are what make concrete strong. The bigger the stones, the stronger the concrete, for the most part, with this critical proviso: The diameter of the stones in the mix should never exceed onethird the thickness of the slab you’re pouring. This means that if your sidewalk will be 4 inches thick, the largest stone should be no more than 1.333 inches in diameter. It’s best that you have a blend of stones in your mix that range from say 0.5 inches up to 1.25

inches in size. When you decide to mix concrete by hand, I was taught to blend the stone, sand and Portland cement powder together DRY before you add water. You want the dry mixture to be uniform and the same color. Understand that the Portland cement is the binder or glue that holds the sand and stone together once the concrete cures. You can add more cement to your blend if you want, just be sure you add the same exact amount to each batch. I would probably increase See builder on 30

If you add too much water to the mix, you dilute the amount of cement paste that coats the sand and gravel. If you add too little, you make it very hard to place and finish the concrete. Professionals can place and finish concrete that’s got minimal water in it because they have special machines that can vibrate the concrete to produce an acceptable finish that’s almost impossible to achieve doing it by hand. The proper amount of water to add to your dry ingredients is enough so

that, once blended, the concrete is fully wet but not so wet that it won’t stay up in a pile. Professionals refer to this as slump. The higher the slump number, the more water you have in the mix. If I were to order concrete from a ready-mix plant that came in a truck to the job site, I’d order a 4-inch slump for a sidewalk job. This mix flows down the chute of the concrete truck and can be placed in forms by an experienced crew. You can mimic this 4-inch slump by making sure the concrete in your wheelbarrow, once mixed, will stay up on the sides of the wheel barrow and not fall back down into a flat level surface in the wheelbarrow. If the concrete mix acts

like thick gravy, then you have far too much water in it. Your disappointing finish results may have been a rookie error. It’s entirely possible you mixed the concrete correctly but didn’t place it right. You may have put the concrete mix in the forms and not worked the mix to drive the stones just below the surface while the mixture was still in the plastic state. Professionals use a tool called a bullfloat or a vibrating power screed to do this. Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for FREE at www.AsktheBuilder.com. Blues Pioneer and Rock Icon Share the Stage At The Flying Monkey

Blues veteran James “Superharp Cotton and guest guitarist Jay Geils will give a live performance at The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth on Friday, May 30th. Over the course of his storied career, Cotton has seemingly done it all. As a small boy he learned harmonica directly from Sonny Boy Williams. He toured with Howlin’ Wolf and spent twelve years with Muddy Waters before stepping out on his own. Leading his own band, he rose to the very top of blues and rock scenes, touring the world nonstop and earning his reputation as one of the most powerful live blues performers in the world. Jay Geils needs no introduction to the legions of fans that made the J. Geils Band one of the leading acts in the history of rock and roll. After a 25-year career of selling millions of records, a Grammy nomination, Hall of Fame Nomination, and tours with The Allman Brothers Band and The Rolling Stones, the band decided to quit at the top of their game with the number one single and number one album on the charts.

Blues veterans James Cotton (above) and J. Geils (right) will both be performing live at The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth on Friday May 30th. Tickets for this great blues show are on sale now for $34 and $39. This left Jay free to pursue his first musical love - the blues(and take the period out of his name!). Jay teamed with J. Geils band mate, Magic Dick, for two successful blues recordings as the band Bluestime. Tours of Europe, Japan and the United States followed, as well

ď ˆď Šď §ď ¨ď€ ď “ď ´ď Ąď Ťď Ľď ł

as tours with Jay’s longtime idol and friend, B.B King. Jay was finally playing the music that was his first love and the lifeblood that runs through the veins of every rocker. Expect Jay’s soul drenched, masterful guitar work to be featured with Cotton’s band on a bagful of

classic blues tunes. Tickets for James Cotton Band featuring Jay Geils are on sale now for $34, and $39. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www. flyingmonkeynh.com or call 603-536-2551.
