It is all part of a $350,000 project to give the church a new foundation with a full basement as well as adding on fourteen hundred feet to the back of the church to bring in modern day amenities such as sepa-

rate men and women’s rest rooms, a coffee bar/ snack social area and a meeting place for after the services. Once the church is in place on its new foundation, the old floor will be taken out and replaced and eventually carpeted. The Second Baptist Church of Sanbornton is moving again. Built in 1836 and known as the Bay Meeting House, the 178-yearold old fixture with its prominent view over Lake Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee beyond was last moved in 1886 when

it was moved back a few feet from its proximity to Upper Bay Road. This past April, one hundred and twentyeight years later, it has been lifted and moved back closer to its original location, twenty-four feet closer to Upper Bay Road as well as fourteen feet further away from Steele Hill Road to settle setback issues. The church was recently raised and moved 24-feet closer to Upper Bay Road to sit on its new concrete foundation. The church was moved to accommodate a new 1200 square foot addition as well as to maintain a drive area between the church and the Food Pantry that sits behind it.

Elvis Costello will take the stage solo at the Capitol Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 28 to perform songs from his entire career. When Elvis Costello’s first record was released in 1977, his bristling cynicism and anger linked him with the punk and newwave explosion. Though the main connection he had with the punks was his unbridled passion, he tore through rock’s back pages taking whatever he wanted, as well as borrowing from country, Tin Pan Alley, pop, reggae, and other genres. Over his career, that musical eclecticism distinguished him through his fiercely literate lyrics and richly diverse music. Tickets available at the box office, located at 44 South Main Street, Concord NH, via phone at 603-225-1111 and online at ccanh.com. Tickets: $82.50 Gold Circle; $69.50 Orchestra/Mezzanine/Balcony; $34.50 Rear Balcony.

Admission is $10 per person. Music for ‘Metropolis’ will be performed live by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer and one of the nation’s leading silent film accompanists. ‘Metropolis’ (1927), regarded as German director Fritz Lang’s masterpiece, is set in a futuristic city where a privileged elite pursue lives of leisure while the masses toil on vast machines and live deep underground. The film, with its visions of futuristic factories and flying cars, set new standards for visual design and inspired generations of dystopian fantasies from Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ to Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil.’ The restored ‘Metropolis’ will be shown on Thursday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Flying Monkey Movie House and Performance Center, 39 South Main St., Plymouth. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Buffed Up

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

In New Hampshire it is now the law that abortion clinics will be required to have buffer zones up to twenty-five feet so people will have to yell even louder now and make even bigger signs when protesting against people going to get abortions. Of course, this is a sensitive issue and I’m really not here to chime in one way or another. I’m certainly not going to be the one that gives anyone the idea they should bring along a couple of bullhorns. (I didn’t say that.) I just feel that with this new law there will be repercussions throughout the state. And I’m not even talking about the obvious lawsuits that will be coming down the road when people sue because they hurt their throats while screaming. They never would have found themselves so far away in the first place if the law didn’t exist. What I am talking about is how now everyone is going to insist on a buffer zone. Why is it fair that only one particular type of business or person be allowed to have them when they would definitely be very effective in some other instances as well? I can immediately think of a few situations and places where buffer zones are not only needed, but should be put into effect right away. For instance, I think we can all agree that there must be at least a ten-foot

buffer zone which would be in effect for at least five minutes after entering a clothing store. The buffer zone and time limit would be there to protect us innocent shoppers, sometimes just browsing, from the immediate attack by the smiley salesperson who asks “Is there anything I can help you find today when we haven’t even had the chance yet to find it ourselves. To those simply browsing, it forces us into an immediate reaction of saying with a sheepish smile “Just looking and then feeling guilty for the rest of the visit since we know the salesperson realizes we aren’t there to buy, thus helping his/her store survive. It can be emotionally challenging and ruin the rest of your day and, for some, the week. In this modern age there is now a definite need for a buffer zone from certain cell phone users. You know, the ones who talk loudly into their phones in any social setting letting everyone around know such things as how much money they just pulled in during their latest deal or certain procedures they recently went through to have a gastrointestinal issue fixed. In this case, the cell phone talker would be responsible for setting up at least a fifteen-foot perimeter between themselves and those innocent folks around him/her that might be within listening range. Of course, the whole purpose of talking loud is so everyone can know your business so this law would simply make it worthless for the talker to even engage in such conversations so they wouldn’t. The penalty for those wh o insist on b r ea k ing this law should be

$10,000 fine and ninety days in jail. (It is my law, I can make up whatever I want.) Another need for a buffer zone would be at the supermarket check-out. I think we all can agree that those plastic wands that are used to distinguish between orders are way too thin to serve any true purpose. Sure, it helps the checkout person understand where one order stops and another begins, but it only adds to the stress of our daily lives. Knowing, as the next customer in line, that we must be ready when we see that first patch of open rubber on the checkout, to immediately begin to fill it with our own groceries so as not to anger those behind us. A bigger plastic wand, say two-feet wide, would give us time to reflect as we waited, easing our stress and ultimately, helping all of mankind in the process. Or not. And, of course, there should always be a mandatory 50-foot buffer between the public and any Flatlander who is about to use a roof rake for the first time. My group FATSO (Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion) once hired a lobbyist to try and influence certain state legislators on the necessity of this law, but to no avail. I’m convinced that if I put my mind to it and was enough of an activist, I could help to make all of these new buffers a reality. Brendan Smith is the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles which can be ordered online at www. tinyurl.com/meu75h9. It is also available at The Weirs Times and select bookstores in the Lakes Region.

A Different March To The Editor: On May 18, Manchester NH hosted a major “March against Hunger.” Why are we doing that? Our media report that overweight is the major public health issue in America. An obese person spends hundreds of dollars more in health care than someone who’s at the right weight. Overweight people have more heart disease, more diabetes, and more sore muscles. My friends and I have spent decades trying to keep our weight down. We’ve tried many diets and many books. The bottom line is that we don’t lose weight unless we’re hungry. If I’m not hungry at least half the time, I gain weight. To lose weight, I have to be hungry all the time, even right after meals. Hunger is the only way to lose wight. Given the problems caused by overweight, why aren’t we marching for hunger? Bill Taylor New Hampton, NH.

So the administration is searching for something to divert people’s attention from all the unanswered, at least not honestly answered, questions about Benghazi. They tried to distract us with “income inequality” but dropped it when people discovered that President Obama and Democrat Senators pay women significantly less than men. Now President Obama is trying to distract us by claiming that there is a current man-made global warming (MMGW) crisis (even worse than the UN claims). And he wants to spend billions more of your money, your children’s money, your grandchildren’s money, etc.; to do what? (Besides buy votes, enrich supporters, and impoverish the middle class?) Despite anything we might do, global warming can only be briefly delayed. But why delay something that saves human lives? Cold kills many more people than warming. If the earth warms as predicted, by 2050 about 1.4 million more people will survive annually. Most Americans appropriately are skeptical and consider MMGW a minor concern. The many disasters that the MMGW alarmists promised didn’t happen. Human civilization didn’t end by 2005 as they promised in 1985. The oceans didn’t See mail boat on 29

Is it time for The Boston Red Sox to find a new home? Mike Moffett thinks so. THEIR World Series home games at Fenway Park, while Braves Field was under construction. (The Miracle Braves were National League cellardwellers in early July of 1914 but finished 70-19 to win the pennant by ten games. They then swept Connie Mack’s favoured Philadelphia Athletics to win the World Series, the series finale being a 3-1 triumph—at Fenway Park! The Red Sox beat Brooklyn 4-1 in the final game of the 1916 World Series—at Braves Field!) Anyway, it’s time for the Red Sox to get into the 21st century and join every other Major League team (except the hapless Cubs) and play ball in a fan-friendly modern park. Yes, it’s heresy to advocate the Sox leaving Fenway’s friendly confines, but it’s time. I’m a history

guy and I love the park’s traditions, memories and ghosts. Yes, Babe Ruth played there. But Boston fans deserve better. People are taller and wider than they were in 1912, and many, including me, don’t fit into the seats. I remember going to one game and sitting in a seat down the right field line that faced centerfield. So I stuffed myself into a seat where my body faced one way and I had to turn my head to the left to see home plate. Except that I couldn’t see home plate, See moffett on 28

REPLACE FENWAY PARK! After only 17 years at Turner Field, the Atlanta Braves are moving to a new venue—Cobb County Stadium. The new park will undoubtedly sell naming rights to the highest bidder. So the Braves will soon have played in three different home parks in twenty years. Prior to moving to Atlanta after the 1965 season, the Braves played at a couple different venues in Milwaukee. Of course, the team played at Braves Field on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston from 1915-1952. So during the 100 years that the Red Sox played home games at Fenway Park, the Braves claimed at least seven different home parks. Interestingly, the Red Sox played their 1915 and 1916 World Series home games at Braves Field, which could accommodate around 10,000 more fans than could Fenway Park. From The State House New ChaptersNew Beginnings Our journey together began in 2012. Shortly after taking my seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives by Rep. Jane for Belknap Cormier District 8, the Belknap District 8 Weirs Times offered this marvelous opportunity to share a weekly column in their newspaper. I have authored 65 articles which have ranged from general topics of conservatism, to specific state legislation, to concerns of federal overreach here in our Granite State. I have endeavored to shine the light on some murky issues within our local communities. It has been a busy time to be sure. Thank you Weirs Times for allowing me to be part of your newspaper team!

My very first article brought forth some of my personal experiences within the political realm. Nothing much has changed here. While I align myself with the Republican Party, I still consider myself more conservative than anything else. And the moniker of “politician” still stings a bit as I do not see myself as a political animal. In my first article, I described myself as a “Town Crier”. Almost two years later, I still identify with this label MUCH more than politician. Considering all the political gamesmanship and maneuvering, I suppose this makes perfect sense. Who has time for games anyway? However, by the time you read this article, I will have resigned my seat in the NH House of Representatives. To say this decision was difficult is See cormier on 25

Michelle Obama’s ControlFreak Lunch Program

Look out, everyone: The nation’s school lunch lady, Michelle Obama, is mad. With her federal nutrition program under by Michelle Malkin fire across the Syndicated Columnist country and now on Capitol Hill, Mrs. Obama put out a “forceful” call to arms this week to “health activists,” according to The Washington Post. She’s cracking the whip. Her orders are clear: There must be no escape. The East Wing and its sycophants zealously oppose any effort to alter, delay or waive topdown school meal rules. Big Lunch must be guarded at all costs. Progressives blame kid-hating Republicans and greedy businesses for the revolt against Mrs. Obama’s failed policies. But the truth is right around the corner in your students’ cafeterias. Districts are losing money. Discarded food is piling high. Kids are going off-campus to fill their tummies or just going hungry. According to the School Nutrition Association, almost half of school meal programs reported declines in revenue in the 2012-13 school year, and 90 percent said food costs were up. Local nutrition directors are demanding more flexibility and freedom. Look no further than school districts in Los Angeles and Chicago. As I noted in 2011, the L.A. Unified School District pronounced the first lady’s federally subsidized initiative a “flop” and a “disaster.” Principals reported “massive waste, with unopened milk cartons and uneaten entrees being thrown away.” The problem has only worsened. The Los Angeles Times reported last month that

the city’s students throw out “at least $100,000 worth of food a day -- and probably far more,” which “amounts to $18 million a year.” Draconian federal rules dictate calorie counts, whole-grain requirements, the number of items that children must put on their trays, and even the color of the fruits and vegetables they must choose. Asked for a solution, LAUSD Food Service Director David Binkle told the Times bluntly: “We can stop forcing children to take food they don’t like and throw in the garbage.” Or you can do what Arlington Heights District 214 in Michelle Obama’s home state of Illinois just did: Vote yourselves out of the unsavory one-size-fits-all mandate. Last week, the state’s second largest school district decided to quit the national school lunch program altogether. Officials pointed out that absurd federal guidelines prevented them from offering hardboiled eggs, hummus, pretzels, some brands of yogurt, and nonfat milk in containers larger than 12 ounces. The district will deliberately forgo $900,000 in federal aid and instead rely on its own nutritionist to devise healthy choices that students actually want. One local parent summed it up well: “(T)he government can’t control everything.” As more schools look to withdraw, you can bet on the White House to ramp up the Republicanbashing rhetoric. Mrs. Obama’s advocates have already taken to social media to complain about Big Business special interests. But let’s remember: Mrs. Obama has been working the food circuit since 2005, when the wife of newly elected Sen. India’s Political Tsunami—And Opportunity UNITED NATIONS - An ex-

pected, if still extraordinary, political tsunami has swept across India as voters elected a naby John J. Metzler tionalist and Syndicated Columnist pro-business political party to lead this country of over a billion people. Riding a wave of voter anger with both ingrained corruption, slowing economic growth and the entitled privilege of the incumbent Congress Party, voters made a break with the past and overwhelmingly chose Namenda Modi’s pro-commerce Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With only a few breaks in continuity, the Congress Party has run India since independence from Britain in 1947. Congress and its dynastic leadership by the Nehru and Gandhi families were identified with “the idea of India,” a democratic/socialist, secular, and non-aligned land but with a growing undertow of corruption and poverty. Only in the 1990’s, under a more reformist Congress Party, did India begin to change and open itself to the outside world. In the first decades after independence, India was governed by a democratic but socialist model where what was known as the Hindu rate of growth at 2.2 % kept a vast land and population at a low gear. During the

waves of foreign investment in Southeast Asia in the 1970’s and 1980’s India still remained standoffish, preferring instead a self-imposed economic isolation. India’s entrepreneurial and often well-educated people moved abroad, going to Britain, Canada and the USA rather than languishing in a moribund and static economy at home. This began to change in the 1990’s when the heirs of the authoritarian leader Indira Gandhi decided to open up India and its potential to the outside world. Importantly, the United States under both the Clinton and Bush Administrations eagerly partnered with resurgent India for political and commercial ties. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Bush Administration opened close security links with the New Delhi government in a common front against Islamic extremism. India has sadly had its share of dealing with jihadi terrorism and thus chose a closer security partnership with the USA. By the early 2000’s India had enthusiastically opened its gates to commerce and trade and closer ties with the U.S. Economically the computer software revolution was helping create a middle class miracle, which has endured and grown impressively. Thus the global perception, or old stereotypes of India, has changed drastically, and for the better.

To its credit, the economic reforms of Congress and its long serving and competent Prime Minister Manmohan Singh put India on a better track with growth rates of 8 percent. But the last few years saw lackluster

growth below 5 percent. The electoral tsunami was amazing. The BHP won 282 of the 545 parliamentary seats; the first time in 30 years where a government gained an abso-

Poverty and Snow Storms Many years ago, in upstate New York, there was a lady who was caught in a fierce snow storm that produced conditions called a by Thomas Sowell “ w h i t e o u t . ” Syndicated Columnist That’s when the snow is falling so thick and fast that all you can see in any direction is just sheer white. This lady wandered around in the storm, struggling to try to get home, but there was no way for her to know where home was. Eventually she collapsed in the snow and died -- something like 50 feet from her home that she could not see. All too often that image comes back to me when I see so many people in poverty wandering off in all directions, either alone or following some of the many local or national messiahs -- often not very far from a way out of their poverty but, like the lady who died in the snow storm, unable to see the way. Some years ago, a dear friend of mine took it upon himself to try to educate a young nephew from a poor and troubled home, taking the lad into his and his wife’s own home, and paying for him to go to a private school. The boy was quite bright but he had problems that took up a lot of the time and money of my friend, who had a very demanding job, and could ill afford the time or money that he was spending, in hopes of giving this young man a better life. Eventually, after some years, the young fellow came to him and said that he wanted to go back home. He could handle the school work where he was, but found it both unsatisfying and unnecessary. He

said frankly that he thought he could make it through life without that education, living by his wits, hustling in one way or another. Disappointing and even shocking as that story was, it was not unique. I have heard something like it from other friends who tried to help similar young persons, sometimes seeing them make progress, but then seeing them eventually lose their way and the whole heart-breaking effort come to nought. A couple of years ago, a friend in Chicago told me about a success story, where the young man was now in college, but only after a lot of complications that made it seem like that might never happen. Unlike the lady lost in a snow storm, who might with better luck have stumbled into her home in her wanderings, many young people in poverty today not only do not seem to know the way, but have many other people leading them off in other directions. Some of these other people are fellow youngsters with little experience or understanding of a wider world than the one they grew up in, and a short time horizon that seldom extends beyond the pleasures or excitement of the moment. Their shared ignorance may seem like knowledge. And, by the time experience in the world of hard knocks gives them some real knowledge, it may be too late. Where there is no father in the home, as too often is the case, adolescent boys may choose as models irresponsible people in the world of entertainment, or even in the world of crime. Then there are the messiahs with a message. The most popular of these messages seems to be that all your problems are due to other people -- people that the messiahs will help fight, in exchange for See Sowell on 32

There are numerous products available both on the market and by prescription to fight pain and inflammation. Aching knees, degenerative joints, cancer and heart disease are all linked to inflammation. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it just happens to the elderly. Many people are confused as to what causes their aches and pains and what to do about it. Often they will just take ibuprofen or a similar product to mask the pain. This does not make it better; it just stops the hurt temporarily. “Inflammation is the body’s emergency response to an injury caused by an infection, environmental toxin, trauma or biomechanical dysfunction. While anti-inflammatory drugs aren’t inherently evil, they are vastly overused and can be dangerous if abused. It’s one thing to pop a few Advil once in a while to relieve soreness, but constant use can lead to trouble. NSAIDs (such as Motrin, Naproxen and Advil) inhibit muscle protein synthesis, and

take fish-oil supplements). Most adults should aim for an omega-6:omega-3 ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. ▪ Avoid Trans fats: Trans fats inhibit the enzymes responsible for breaking down omega-3 and omega-6 fats, crippling your body’s ability to process healthy fats normally. ▪ Limit refined carbohydrates: Consuming excess refined sugars contributes to inflammation both by increasing the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and raising insulin levels, which isn’t catastrophic by itself, but will eventually lead to increased inflammation. ▪ Maintain a healthy weight: The more excess weight you carry as fat, the more active those fat cells are and the more inflamed you’ll be. ▪ Increase dietary antioxidants: Antioxidants are organic compounds found in fruits and vegetables that down-regulate the production of inflammatory cytokines. Ideally these come from diet, but supplemental vitamin A, C, E and D3, to name a few, won’t hurt if you’re not getting enough. ▪ Get adjusted regularly: It’s no secret that correcting joint dysfunction helps with the pain and edema associated with local inflammation, but a 2006 study by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College showed that chiropractic manipulation lowered systemic levels of inflammatory cytokines, suggesting regular chiroHOURS: practic care can actually Tues - Fri 10-6 reduce chronic whole-body inflammation. chronic overuse can lead to breakdown of joint cartilage. NSAIDs also interfere with the COX-1 enzyme, an important enzyme for stomach health. Short-term inflammation is normal; it only becomes a big deal when inflammation is long-term and systemic. Chronic inflammation can cause generalized joint and muscle pain, and the longer it goes on, the more likely it will lead to more serious health problems such as insulin resistance, DJD, heart disease, obesity, cancer and dementia, all of which are driven by chronic inflammation. What can you do to stop the insanity and get on the road to better health and reduce the inflammation? Read over the list below for a guide to better health ▪ Get a proper balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fats: Prostaglandins, the lipid compounds derived from fats, can be either pro-inflammatory or antiinflammatory. The prostaglandins produced by the breakdown of omega-6 fats are mostly pro-inflammatory, and the prostaglandins produced by omega-3 fats are mostly anti-inflammatory. Most Americans consume too much omega-6 fat and not enough omega-3 fat. The solution? Dump cooking oils made with corn, safflower and other omega-6 oils, choose grass-fed meat over grain-fed meat, and eat more cold-water fish (or

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

I’m consistently shocked at the cost of everything: gas, groceries, and utility bills, just to name a few. It just seems that it is becoming harder and harder for people to make ends meet. This often means that people will have to get second or even third jobs occasionally. It also means that people have to make sacrifices. Unfortunately, these sacrifices tend to be their health and their long term well-being. This is understandable: given the choice of paying for groceries today versus worrying about a problem that could occur down the road, it is easy to prioritize the problem of today. Ultimately, however, time will pass and the future problem will become a today problem. Generally, when the problem is referring to healthcare it is more expensive to fix a problem later, than to prevent or minimize the issue today. The key for us both health wise and financially is: how can we protect our health long term in a cost effective manner? Now, if this was an easy answer our healthcare costs as a nation wouldn’t be so out of control. America spends roughly 18% of its gross domestic product on health! This is a number that is significantly higher than any other nation. This works out to $8500 per person. Every man, woman, and child....$8500. This is $3000 per person more than any other country. Yet, we don’t live longer

than our counterparts from around the world and we are not healthier than them in general. Faced with numbers like that it is easy to become discouraged. My opinion is this: a good first step to taking control of our health and our finances regarding health is to take back personal responsibility as individuals. It is clear that healthcare in our country is more expensive and less effective than it should but our healthcare system is not the singular entity to be blamed. We all should

carry some of the burden. Some of the most expensive diseases and problems to treat are of the chronic variety and these are generally lifestyle induced (most heart disease, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes are some examples). Meaning: we as individual Americans can be part of the solution by choosing to live differently. By differently I mean this: maintain a healthy weight, quit smoking, exercise daily, eat fruit and veggies as the core of your diet, drink more See moneysmith on 34

Breathe Easier Nearly 26 million people living in the United States have asthma, a chronic lifelong disease that affects the lungs. Asthma can cause wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Although asthma cannot be cured, it is possible to manage asthma to reduce and prevent asthma attacks. People with asthma can prevent attacks if they learn how to avoid asthma triggers like tobacco smoke, mold, outdoor air pollution, and colds or flu. Asthma attacks can also be prevented by using inhaled corticosteroids and other prescribed daily long-term control medicines correctly. Asthma attacks cause adults to miss work and children to miss school. These dangerous and sometimes life-threatening episodes reduce the quality of life for people with asthma. The good news is that it can be controlled. It’s important to note that asthma can occur at any age. It may be an allergic reaction or exercise induced. If you find that you are having shortness of breath more than you would expect for your activity level, a productive cough, and/or wheezing (producing a whistling sound when breathing), talk to your primary care provider. He or she may refer you to the Cardio Pulmonary Department at Huggins Hospital for testing. “We see many patients coming in this time of year with asthma due to seasonal allergies,” said Bob Parent, CRT, RCP, Respiratory Therapist in the Cardio Pulmonary Department. “The earlier a patient can be tested and start treatment, if necessary, the better the outcome.” Parent added that some patients wait too long to seek help which can cause complications. “Waiting too long can bring on additional health issues that could have been avoided with earlier intervention,” said Parent. So what is involved in testing? The Cardio Pulmonary Department offers state-of-the-art spirometry testing. For this test, you breathe into a mouthpiece attached to a recording device (spirometer). It measures how much and how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs. If asthma is diagnosed, the respiratory therapists at Huggins Hospital can help you control your asthma. Make the most of your recreational time. If you are having difficulty breathing, talk to your primary care provider. For more information about Respiratory Therapy at Huggins Hospital, visit our website at www.hugginshospital.org.

or other citrus in a container. Just move the potted plant indoors for the winter and back outdoors next season once the danger of frost has passed. And don’t forget the blueberries that are high in antioxidants and flavor. These nutritious beauties require moist well-drained acidic soil. Something most gardeners do not have. This makes growing them in containers, where you control the soil, a good option. Blueberries provide seasonal interest with their nodding white bell-shaped flowers in spring, colorful fruit in summer and yellow, orange or red color in fall. Though only one plant is needed to bear fruit, keep in mind that your harvest will more than double if you grow two. So survey your patio, deck, balcony or garden for space to add a container or two of fruiting plants that are sure to add beauty and flavor to your garden and meals this season. “At Only One Jew” Eaves-Dropper Of Wolfeboro; Sharpton & Obama? From DAILY CALLER: Congressman Andy Harris (R -MD), a Navy veteran and Maryland doctor with by Niel Young VA medical Advocates Columnist training, hopes Veterans Affairs Secretary Gen. Eric Shinseki is “madder than hell” but ultimately, believes the VA Secretary “should be fired.” In an interview with WMAL’s morning-drive show, Dr. Harris told the D.C.-based radio program: “I have to tell you, VA Secretary General Shinseki should be fired. There should be numerous people fired.” The doctor believes the VA is an “overall bureaucratic mess” and the government-run system is not working. Harris, Maryland’s only Republican serving in Congress, was inspired to run in 2010 to fight the ObamaCare law. His limited government and free market beliefs in the medical system also extend to allowing veterans to have more medical options beyond the VA system. “I’ve held for years that we should give every Veteran the ability to voucher out of the VA and go to a private healthcare system,” Harris told WMAL. “Every single veteran should have a choice. Don’t make them do it. Give them the choice. I will tell you, give veterans the choice, most of them, I believe, will choose to be taken care of outside the VA medical system. ” Harris is hopeful that the VA scandal could be “the catalyst” for real change to the system. ******** Our Dear Leader who promised “you can keep

Al Sharpton’s history of hate is so voluminous and well documented, where does one even begin? The time he disparaged Jews as “diamond merchants” during the unrest of the infamous Crown Heights riots? Or when Sharpton tried goading NYC’s Jewish community into an all-out fistfight, saying “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house”? How about referring to the Jewish owner of Freddy’s Fashion Mart, Fred Harari, as a “white interloper” for seeking to expand his business in Harlem? (You may have heard of Freddy’s. It was also known as the Harlem Massacre. One of Sharpton’s followers also disapproved of the “white interloper” and burned the store to the ground, murdering eight people including himself.) But those tirades were just Sharpton’s anti-semetic ones. He’s also sermonized on “Greek homos” and “crackas” as well as bombarded former NYC

Mayor David Dinkins with a barrage of N-bombs. SO IF YOU’RE SHARPTON and you’re confronted about some of your “greatest hits,” what do you do? Scoff at the questioning and argue that one of your notorious racial slurs wasn’t, in fact, a slur because IT WAS MEANT FOR JUST ONE JEWISH INDIVIDUAL. No, seriously, that was Sharpton’s defense. On the night of the glitzy Washington Correspondents Dinner, Daily Surge Publisher Jason Mattera asked the faux Civil Rights leader if he should be banned from television, “in the spirit of Donald Sterling,” for all the “racist stuff” he’s said over the years. Sharpton, recall, threatened boycotts and protests if the National Basketball Association failed to ban Sterling from the league. If you can believe it, Sharpton challenged Mattera to produce evidence of racism. And when that evidence was produced, easily (see above) – in this case, him calling Fred Harari a “white interloper” and David Dinkins a n***** – Sharpton ignored the shot at Dinkins, but ridiculously claimed that “whiter interloper” didn’t rise to the level of racism because it was directed AT ONLY ONE JEW, not a neighborhood of them. “When did I call Jews ‘white interlopers’?” Sharpton demanded. Mattera reminded Sharpton of Freddy’s Fashion Mart and followed-up with, “Doesn’t it take some serious bleeps on your end to accuse somebody of racism?” Sharpton blustered back, “You went from one guy who paid people off the books and was wrong,” before the “Reverend ” rambled on about ‘lies’ and ‘distortions’ See advocates on 29

Slumber Time by Steve White Contributing Writer

Have you ever wondered where birds sleep, especially on those cold winter nights? The generic answer is that birds sleep anywhere they safely can stay warm. Some ducks sleep in icy water. Bobwhites prefer to sleep on the ground. Crows and turkeys, however, like to sleep in trees. Cavity nesters, such as screech owls, are most comfortable in natural cavities or nest boxes. Wherever a bird sleeps, its first line of defense against the cold is its feathers. Feathers repel water and efficiently insulate warm bodies from the much colder air. Each feather is controlled by muscles that can raise and lower it. By fluffing their feathers, birds create numerous tiny air spaces that drastically reduce heat loss. This is the same principle that makes down jackets so warm in winter. On extremely frigid nights, birds reduce heat loss even further by burying exposed body parts into their feathers. This is why birds tuck their bills into their shoulder feathers and why many aquatic birds often sleep with one leg tucked up tightly against the body. Birds also have an amazing network of blood vessels in their feet and legs that minimizes heat loss. Song birds, such as cardinals, blue jays and finches will spend their nights in dense thickets

or vegetation. Tangles of briar patches, grape vines and brambles protect birds from all but the most torrential of downpours. Evergreens and conifers also provide excellent protection from the elements. Woodpeckers, titmice and nuthatches sleep in cavities that are similar to their nesting holes. Some species roost by the dozens in large tree cavities. Other avian sleeping arrangements are a bit more unusual. Bobwhites sleep in a tight circle on the ground, all heads facing outward. The close quarters enable them to conserve precious body heat, and the outward orientation allows many cautious eyes to monitor danger in every direction. When there is lots of snow cover, ruffed grouse sometimes bury themselves in snowdrifts, where the snow itself insulates them from severe winter temperatures. Despite their small size and lack of body

fat, birds use specific anatomical peculiarities and behavior to make it through each night, no matter the temperatures. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Owner, Steve White, is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls” with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. Wright Museum Honors D-Day’s 70th Anniversary With Special Film Screening On June 6, 2014 the world will recognize the 70th anniversary of D-Day, one of the seminal events of the 20th century. The Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, NH will honor this momentous anniversary with two special screenings of the Academy Award nominated film, D-Day Remembered. The June 6, 1944 invasion, officially called Operation Overlord, involved five beaches along the Normandy coast of France. Allied armies landed at Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches. The American troops who were part of the June 6, 1944 battle would have landed at either Utah or Omaha Beach. The objective of the invasion was to secure a beachhead so that invading Allies could pass into Western Europe and establish a “second front” that would relieve the Soviets in the East. Between June 6 and August 31, more than 30,000 Germans and 45,000 Allied troops died in battle, while hundreds of thousands on both sides were wounded or missing. The Allies eventually prevailed, spelling the beginning of the end of WWII in Europe. Wright Museum Executive Director, Mike Culver says: “This is one of those rare moments when the course of human history is altered within a 24-hour period”. The 1994 documentary, D-Day Remembered, was made by the well-known late filmmaker, Charles Guggenheim, and is narrated by David McCullogh. The New York Times said of the film, “it contains indelible memories and unforgettable images.” The images are given even more impact because over fifty D-Day participants from Britain, America and Germany share their memories of the event in this film. The Wright Museum invites everyone to join them in honoring the men who participated in one of the most significant battles in history. D-Day Remembered will be shown in the Wright Museum theater at 11:00am and at 1:00pm. Admission to the film is free with your paid Museum admission. Seating is limited, so please reserve your seat by calling 603-569-1212 or emailing us at wrightmuseum.org

DEAR LYNN: If all of the concrete blocks have a similar looking exterior pattern, I would say the blocks were made that way and that it’s not a stucco coating. Not long after concrete block was first brought to market, manufacturers figured out that they could make the outside of it look fancy, as if it were cut pieces of limestone or even granite. You can look at the inside of your foundation and examine the condition of the block on the side that faces your base-

DEAR TIM: I live in a house with a concrete block foundation. I think the outside of the block has decorative stucco on it because the exterior of the block is not smooth. Some of the exterior is crumbling, and I wonder if my foundation is going to fail. Can the damage be repaired? How do you get the stucco to stick onto the block and not fall off? Each time I’ve tried to do the job, the repair material falls to the ground. Help! --Lynn L., Mount Airy, Md.

If the inside surface of the block looks good, then I feel confident your problem is just a cosmetic defect in the block. The good news is that this is very easy to repair. Let’s discuss why your previous repair attempts failed. The list of possible reasons is long, but we’ll just concentrate on the most likely ones. When you decide to repair the vertical face of stucco, concrete block or even concrete, the surface needs to be clean, dust-free and structurally sound. You should remove any loose, crum-

bling material by scraping with a stick. Remove it to a depth that, in order to remove more material, you would need a chisel and hammer. The repair material you use must have enough cement and/or lime in it to make it sticky. The Portland cement and lime you’ll sometimes find in mortar mixes or bagged concrete is the primary ingredient that makes the repair material bite or stick onto something else much like paint, glue or epoxy adheres to surfaces. If you don’t have enough cement or lime in your repair mix, it won’t stick well.

The Pantry, built in 2007 after a large donation from church member Diane Grotton, provided groceries to around thirty families each month and holiday baskets for the holidays. The layout of the church will also be reversed as parishioners will now enter through the rear and will be facing the lake view during services. Services now are being held in the vestry next door and future plans call for a connection of the church with the vestry. According to Jack Robinson, $90,000 was raised in just three weeks from the church members (of which there are only a hundred or so) as well as $190,000 See Church on 23

discovered. It came as a surprise to some of the church members who are involved in the project to read that in September of 1939 the bell of the old Baptist Church in Lakeport, which was being torn down, was purchased and installed in the belfry of the Second Baptist Church. (The belfry itself was found to be rotting during the renovation and some of the beams have since been repaired.) Sanbornton architect Tibor Farkes created the design for the renovations inside as well as the new addition. Glen Worsman of Eagle Construction donated much time and materials to the project and Geddes Movers of Concord were in charge of the final move. The Second Baptist Church of Sanbornton was listed in the Register of Historic Place in 1984. Additional fund-raising is already in place to get to the next phase of the overall renovation

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, May 29, 2014 builder from 19

Your mix may have been too dry and the concrete block may consequently have sucked too much moisture from the mix too quickly. This can also cause the repair material to be less strong as it could be. Here’s how I’d repair your damaged stucco or the face of the concrete block. I prefer to make my own repair mix using just medium clean sand and pure Portland cement. Although it’s nice to use hydrated lime in the mix, it might be hard for you to locate it. Portland cement on its own, when mixed with sand, will create a repair material that can last hundreds of years. I prepare the concrete block by removing all loose material. Brush the block with a stiff brush. Washing the concrete block is also a good idea, flooding it with water and scrubbing the area at the same time. You’ll want the block to be slightly damp when you start the repair, so washing it will not hurt the repair process. The repair material should be mixed no less than two parts sand to one part Portland cement. For extreme strength and stickiness, you can mix one part sand to one part Portland cement. You add enough water to make the repair mixture resemble whipped mashed potatoes or warm cake icing. This means the material is wet, has body and will easily hold onto the side of a trowel that’s held in a vertical position. If the material droops, falls off the trowel or resembles a thick gravy that sloshes around in the bucket, you added too much water. Add more sand and cement in the proper amounts, stir and make the material thicker. The magic trick most don’t know about is a bonding layer of cement paint. Cement paint was used by masons of old to help new stucco material bond to old stucco, concrete or concrete block. You make cement paint by just mixing Portland

cement powder with clean cold water. Mix it to the consistency of regular paint. With the cement block clean and slightly damp, take an old paint brush and paint the area to be repaired with this cement paint. Brush it on as you would paint, but not too thick. Only brush on as much cement paint as you can cover with the stucco repair mix in five or 10 minutes. You NEVER want the cement paint to dry on the concrete block so avoid working with this in the direct sun, on windy days or whenever conditions are such that it would dry rapidly. Apply the stucco repair mix over the cement paint. Make sure it’s no thicker than 1/2 inch. If the area to be repaired is deeper or thicker than that, you may have to apply two coats of stucco. If you need to do this, be sure the first coat is left rough -- resembling a miniature mountainous

a gross understatement. There were various issues to be considered, but after many years of traveling south for business and church, my family and I decided to make a move to Hooksett. My son will soon be entering the 9th grade and the town of Hooksett has an agreement with Pinkerton Academy. As Christopher has a passion for the musical arts, we think Pinkerton Academy is the place for him to be. Carlos and I will also be closer to our private vocal studio in Manchester. After fourteen years, this long “commute will be at an end. Our pocket books will be most grateful. To be sure, we will miss our friends and acquaintances. I will especially miss my fellow Republican legislators who have worked diligently in the Belknap delegation to keep county taxes down and government accountable to its citizens. And of course, I will miss in-

area -- so the final or next coat has plenty of surface area to bite into. Wait at least 24 hours to add a second coat. To create a smooth texture on the repair, use putty knives, or other small metal hand tools that will allow you to recreate the look of surrounding concrete block. Don’t try to texture the repair material immediately, as it may take 10 or 15 minutes for the stucco material to stiffen up allowing you to sculpt it with tools. Need an answer? Though we will be moving to Hooksett, you can rest assured I still intend to be active and vocal in the political realm here in New Hampshire. There is still work to be done and I look forward to keeping that title of “Town Crier alive and kicking! come to Pax East in Boston and sit on one of the panels,” said Stulir, talking about the popular trade show exclusively for gaming where the Arcade Museums’ display is always a huge attraction. “Ho couldn’t make it but he put me in touch with Eric who did come.” The connection, two years later, led to the donation of the two classic Cruis’n games. “These two games were really a giant step in the evolution of driving games,” said Stulir. “The older games were basically just driving down the

road. The new dimensions in these games were like nothing anyone had ever seen before.” The Cruis’n games became one the most popular driving games of their day. “Before his game, most video games were completed, from idea to final prototype, in about six months,” said Pribyl. “The first Cruis’n game took four years to complete.” Today, it is the norm for new video games to take years to complete. Pribyl also noted that there were extras in the Cruis’n games that didn’t exist before in other driving games. For instance, in

the final scene of Cruis’n USA you can take a drive to the White House where a helicopter takes off to give a bird’s eye view of Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinto and Gennifer Flowers in a hot tub. “You can come and play it today and still see that,” Pribyl said. Pribyl was also involved with created 1992 Strike Force and 2000s Cruis’n Exotica. Eric Pribyl’s generous donation, along with a world of classic video games, are always on working display at the American Classis Arcade Museum at Funspot. as there was a girder in the way. Lots of money for a lousy view. Twenty bucks to park. Eight dollars for a libation. The team lost. It took forever to get away

from the park and back onto I-93 north. Except for a few luxury suites and maybe the monster seats, all the seats are too small. Even the choice seats right be-

hind home plate, where the people are tucked in like sardines. Check it out the next time you watch a game on television. Fans deserve better. The team’s sell-out streak ended last year. The improbable 2013 World Series triumph rekindled passion for a club that finished in last place in 2012 but that passion is bound to subside. The Red Sox could build a new facility and play in the best park in baseball, instead of the worst park. Put in some attractions. Some parking. A museum. Some low cost seats so poorer people can see a game. Bigger and better seats around the infield, like all the other parks. Right now a preponderance of seats are around right field and beyond centerfield. It’s crazy. Even the Yankees finally left “The House that Ruth built.” It’s time for the Red Sox to do likewise. FOOTBALL STADIUMS There was a time when MLB and NFL teams shared venues. The Patriots even used to play at Fenway Park. Now all NFL teams—except Oakland— play in relatively brand new stadiums. Michael Gaio of “Athletic Business” claims that a modern pro stadium is more than a place to watch football. Today’s NFL venues must be multi-purpose entertainment pal-

aces with luxury suites, club seats, loge boxes, VIP levels and more food and beverage options than a Manhattan city block. A stadium must be, as the Minnesota Vikings’ website says, “an epicenter of excitement, opportunity and pride.” And not only are the new stadia handicappedaccessible in ways that Fenway is not, but they are energy efficient. According to “The Wall Street Journal” teams are going to greater lengths than ever to make their stadiums “green.” Take for example Levi’s Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers, set to open later this year: It will be the first stadium in the NFL with a “living roof,” a forest of plants and flowers set on top of the stadium’s eight-story luxury suite tower. The green roof will reduce the building’s energy use and provide natural insulation. Then there are the solar-powered pedestrian bridges outside the stadium that will not only connect fans to the facility, but also offer them a place to charge their electric vehicles. On and on. Consider the billion dollar edifice where the Cowboys play. Imagine the Red Sox taking the best features from all these modern parks incorporating them into what would be America’s finest ball park. Keep

the left field wall, if you want, as the Celtics kept the parquet floor from the old “Garden.” But let’s get out of Fenway Park. To paraphrase that whispering voice from “Field of Dreams” — if you build it, they will come! Sports Quiz Who was the last Major Leaguer to win a batting title without hitting a single home run? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports figures born on May 29 include former NBA forward Bill Curley (1972) and current NBA guard Carmelo Anthony (1984). Sportsquote “I played for Casey Stengel before he was a genius (with the Boston Braves), and I played for him after he was a genius (with the New York Mets).” -Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn, on the Hall of Fame manager who was considered a genius by some when he won ten pennants in 12 years with the Yankees from 194960. Sportsquiz Answer Rod Carew hit .318 with no home runs when he won the 1972 batting title when with the Minnesota Twins. Carew had 92 career home runs during 19 big league seasons with Minnesota and California. His seven batting titles included a great 1977 season when he hit .388. Fact: The first lady has been the most insatiable crony at the center of the Fed Foods racket. Her nonprofit Partnership for a Healthier America has reported assets of $4.5 million from secret donors. It’s not just mean conservatives pointing out her Big Business ties. The leftwing documentary “Fed Up made the same point before being edited under pressure. Hello, Chicago Way. Mrs. Obama’s allies also have accused opponents of wanting to repeal “science-based standards. But the first lady herself was caught spreading false claims that her program was responsible for reducing childhood obesity, when the decline began a decade ago. And as I’ve reported previously, deep-pocketed Big Labor’s push to expand public union payrolls with thousands more food service workers is also driving Mrs. Obama’s agenda. Waste, failure, lies and special interest ties. If federal food policy were really about the children, the East Wing would be embracing change. But this is not about protecting the kids. It’s about protecting Michelle Obama. Her thin-skinned response to criticism is telling: Hell hath no fury like a Nanny State control freak scorned.

Of course, splitting hairs over anti-semitic comments is probably not the best position to find oneself in. “One guy! In any event, who knows how many Jews Al Sharpton had in mind. When an audiotape surfaced of him disparaging Mr. Harari, his initial reaction was, “What’s wrong with denouncing white interlopers? Sharpton eventually gave one of those half-hearted apologies (a bloodbath ensued at Freddy’s, after all) and then carried on with his profession of stoking racial strife. As idiotic as Donald Sterling’s comments were, they were still said in private. Sharpton’s tirades, on the other hand, were delivered for public consumption. And not only has Sharpton been rewarded with his own primetime television show on MSNBC, he’s a FREQUENT GUEST at the White House and Obama officials headline his National Action Network conference. Recently, the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP honored Sharpton with their “Person of the Year award, an accolade that was originally slated to be given to – wait for it – Donald Sterling.

your loyalty, your money or your votes. What would be an analogy to the lady in a snow storm would be if she had someone leading her in the opposite direction from her home. Then there are the wellintentioned people who imagine that they are helping, when in fact they are

with it. Some of the well-meaning people think that promoting young people’s “self-esteem and being “non-judgmental is the way to go. Some even make excuses for them, either explicitly or implicitly, by using such words as “troubled youths or “at risk young people. They do this even when the youths are trouble for others, and a risk for those who encounter them, but

Common sense, common decency, work and honesty are about all I can come up with. These things are not fancy or new or politically correct. But they have a better track record than much that we are doing today.

In an editorial, The Hindu daily opined that the Gandhi family centered party “had surpassed the worst predictions” and, “It is here that the Congress tragedy becomes almost Shakespearean in its proportions. The family (Gandhi) is the Congress life source, its oxygen.” Yet despite its triumph, neither the BJP nor its new Prime Minister must become giddy. While BJP has been a harbinger of business enterprise, it too retains shadows of its hardline Hindu past. Though Hindus form the overwhelming majority, India is a land with an equally large Muslim minority and a robust Christian presence. Given the religious diversity and cultural fault lines

in this vast land, it’s best to govern with a secular template. Divided Kashmir in the north presents another challenge and opportunity. At the end of the British Raj, India’s partition into two countries, India and Pakistan, created a massive rift and the grist for three wars over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Though largely under Indian administration, Kashmir remains a power keg between two nuclear-armed neighbors. Both countries were on the brink of war over Kashmir in the 2000’s but were defused by the Bush Administration diplomacy. Equally there’s an economy, which has stalled and lacks the luster of even a few years ago. While the perception exists that India and China are running neck and

USA/China trade stood at $562 billion with a staggering $322 billion deficit favoring Beijing. Significantly, India’s election is all about dynastic change, fresh opportunity, and the chance to put the country’s commercial fortunes on a firm enterprise oriented path. India’s millions, especially those striving for long denied opportunity, deserve no less a chance. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues.
