Forming Bonds At Live & Let Live Farm by Scott Philbrick Live And Let Live Farm

As I sit here writing this update for Live and Let Live Farm Rescue & Sanctuary in Chichester, it is the 30th anniversary of my father’s passing. Each year on this day, I set that entire day aside for doing nothing. Which, I might add, is quite different from simply “not doing anything.” Today however, I’ve made an exception and broken my own rule. I’m sitting at the Circle Diner in Epsom, NH having lunch with LLLF

Founder and long time Executive Director Teresa Paradis, going over the material for this very article. It’s always emotional to discuss the rescues, the victories as well as the heartbreakers, but this one was especially moving, and quite apropos for having violated my selfimposed homage to my father. When I turned twentyfive, I felt it was a time for introspection on my young life, deciding to compare my father’s life to mine at age twentySee LLLF on 19

To The Editor: When Congress passed the STOCK Act in 2012, the law was supposed to stop congressional insider trading, improve transparency, and increase public trust in the legislative branch. But it didn’t go far enough. Recently, the news outlet Insider identified that many members of Congress have failed to properly report their stock trades, making it impossible to fully enforce the STOCK Act. We must go further and stop sitting members of Congress from buying and selling stocks altogether. That’s the best way to make sure that our elected representatives are responsive to our needs and not thinking about how a particular policy might affect their stock portfolio. Thankfully, there are several proposals before Congress to address this problem. I urge our leaders in Congress to come together and pass legislation for the good of the American people. Lisa Clark New Hampton, NH,

What To Do? To The Editor: We need to do this..., we need to do that…, we need to do something. Those were opening statements made by law enforcement officers, medical first responders, educators, politicians, media commentators and victimized family members following the horrific school shootings

at the Columbine High School in 1999 and the Sandy Hook elementary School in 2012. Similarly, we have heard those statements following every other mass shooting and now hear them repeated in reaction to the recent tragic murders at a Texas elementary school. Within a few hours following the Sandy Hook School crime, Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal went before national media to condemn National Rifle Association President Wayne LaPierre as having responsibility for that tragedy and stressed “We need to have stricter gun control laws”. Over the next two years the Connecticut Legislature enacted new gun control measures however, law enforcement personnel and firearms experts noted that had those laws been in effect at the time, they would not have prevented the killer Adam Lanza from committing the crime at the Sandy Hook School. When Connecticut legislatures were confronted with that fact they responded “Well we had to do something”. Not surprising, when the facts came out following the Sandy Hook School crime it became apparent that Adam Lanza had a long history of psychological problems and was infatuated with a violent on-line game called “Kindergarten Killer”. Viewing that game before it was pulled off the internet I found that Adam Lanza acted out the script exactly as portrayed in that game. Following a federal investigation into the Columbine High School tragedy in 1999 NPR

radio interviewed an FBI agent involved with producing the report. After his presentation of the facts found, the interviewer asked “Don’t you think there needs to be more gun control laws”. The agent stated that the two young men that committed the crime violated over onehundred and twenty gun control laws already on the books and noted that more gun control laws would not have made a difference since the criminals obviously don’t follow the laws. He also emphasized the facts that both of these young men had previously stated intent to commit violent actions on school mates, demonstrated disturbing psychological behaviors and regularly engaged in playing violent video games. The most violent mass murders ever committed in the United States were conducted by flying airplanes into large populated buildings in 2001 and exploding a truck bomb filled with a mixture of agricultural fertilizer and diesel fuel next to a Federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995. Murders are committed regularly by various forms of weapons. While politicians and media commentators stress their opinions on the need for more gun control legislation, problems dealing with mental illness, failure to enforce current gun laws, failures in communication between different divisions of law enforcement and lax policies for dealing with people demonstrating violent behavior go on. While new gun laws will no doubt be the prime subject deSee MAILBOAT on 27

0It was in the month of June in the year 1897 that Judge F.M. Beckford of Laconia, New Hampshire was on his way back to the city from Sanbornton Square when he took note of the open front door of a house he passed. Soon afterwards he came across a man with a full jug of cider in his hand and the indication that he had the same amount inside his body. The man volunteered the information that he had fought with his wife and had kicked her out of the house and threw her trunk and personal effects after her. When the judge arrived at the next farm house the cider man’s neighbors told him that the drunken man had attempted to murder his wife. A written account of Judge Beckford’s actions indicated that he, being the solicitor for Belknap County, decided that he should do something to prevent a murder rather than sometime later being the judge to pre-

An Ossipee doctor was accused of murdering his wife. The trial was at a special session of the Carroll County supreme court with Judge Blodgett overseeing the proceedings in which Dr. John Ralph Hatch was accused of murdering his wife, the former Fannie A Huntress, by putting poison in her food on September 11, 1897. Dr. Hatch had formerly lived in Gilford, but at the time his wife was poisoned they were living in the village of Centerville in the town See SMITH on 22

Our volunteers will be curbside in front of the little while church at 172 Pleasant Street in Laconia. Our greater Laconia community is doing an awesome job collecting these plastics and keeping them out of our landfills. Thank you. We ARE collecting plastic grocery bags, vegetable bags, bubble wrap, newspaper sleeves, bread bags, air packing bags, ice bags, dry cleaning bags, wood pellet bags, cereal box liners, and plastic films labeled with #2 or #4 recycling symbols. We can no longer accept pet food bags and we are NOT accepting hard plastic items. What we collect is sent to Trex Corporation in Maine via the Hannaford’s in Gilford to be repurposed into composite decking and outdoor furniture. Consider setting up a neighborhood collection box. Laconia High School Interact Club and Prescott Farm have collection boxes as does the Taylor and Wesley Woods communities. Our thanks to all of them and also to St. Vincent de Paul as well as everyone else who has helped with this on-going program.

F O O L NEW HAMPSHIRE A

in brendan@weirs.com

I recently turned my FRA. For those of you youngsters who don’t know what I am talking about, let me clue you in on by Brendan Smith what a FRA is Weirs Times Editor and what to expect when you get older. FRA stands for Full Retirement Age, but it has nothing at all to do with retirement. At least for me anyway. Full Retirement Age (FRA) is a random age that the government assigns that allows you to get back some of the money each month that you have been giving to them over the past several decades whether you liked it or not. You might also know it as Social Security. Reaching your FRA means that you can collect your full Social Security payout while still working without them keeping some as a penalty for continuing to work. But you will likely still have to give them some of it back come tax time, since you kept working, so they will have enough money to give you back some of the money that you have been giving them over the past several decades so that you can give them a little bit more of it back at tax time again. Make sense? My FRA was sixty-six years and two months which I reached a few months ago. So today, I am the FRA that someone born a couple of years after me would need to be in order to get back some of the money they have been giving to the government over the last several decades so that they can give them back some of it next April if they continue to work. Follow? I must admit I was pretty

excited to get my first official Social Security check that I had patiently waited years and months to get. I could have started collecting Social Security when I was a mere lad of sixty-two when only one knee hurt. I did consider this, dreaming of spending this extra cash on so many things that only required one good knee. But if you are still working at sixty-two, you may feel you don’t have quite enough savings to retire since you had to give so much money to the government over the years so they would have enough money to give you back some of it every month when you reached your FRA. On the other hand, if you are still working, collecting Social Security at sixty-two might give you enough money to make up for the taxes they are taking out to give back to you in your Social Security payments. So, when the big day came when my first Social Security check was about to hit my bank account since I had waited patiently to reach my FRA, I turned on my laptop, signed into my bank account and there it was as promised (One of the few promises the government actually keeps… for now.) I look ed at the nu mbers staring me in the face and thought… “That’s it? That’s all your gonna give me?” So, I closed my laptop and headed to work so that I could earn another paycheck that would have some more money taken out of it so that I could keep on looking at my bank account each month and say… “That’s it? That’s all you are gonna give me?” Of course, as some will point out, this is my own fault. I could have kept having money taken out of my paycheck each week until I reached the age of seventy, which is when you can

collect the maximum monthly Social Security paycheck. Of course, by then it will not be just both knees that have given out, but also your lower back as well as the loss of any desire to travel or do anything fun with the money since you’ve been watching the news way too much and the safest thing it seems to do is just stay home, turn on your laptop, sign into your bank account and say… “That’s it? That’s all your giving me?” since things are a lot crazier out there and also cost a lot more than when you were a mere lad of sixty-six and two months. Of course, you first have to make it to seventy in order to stay home. But that goes without saying. If you’re smart, you have invested some of your money over the years, so you won’t have to depend solely on Social Security for your income. You might have put it into a 401(k) so that when you finally need it, the government, which has been waiting for you to touch it, will be able to take some of it to help give you some of it back in your Social Security. So, for you youngsters out there in your fifties and early sixties, take heed. You have to pay attention since every year later you were born adds a few months onto your FRA age and eventually, maybe, you will actually reach your FRA after your maximum retirement age. Yes, the Social Security system is a bit complicated, but if you are savvy you might just be able to figure it out. So, that’s it. That’s all I’m gonna give you. Good luck out there.

Sabotaging America’s Military From Within A year ago this month, a comparison of military recruitment ads from China, Russia and the U.S. went viral on social media. Our foreign competitors wooed their potential enlistees with muscular appeals to national pride and protection of the traditional nuclear family. A U.S. Army promotional campaign, by by Michelle Malkin contrast, featured a pastel-hued cartoon depiction of a female soldier named Syndicated Columnist “Emma” who marched in a gay pride parade with her two mothers and became a soldier to “shatter some stereotypes.” Wokeness is a terminal cancer in our armed forces, eroding the foundational bones of its honor-bound institutions and ravaging the core values of generations of America’s frontline fighters. Integrity, honor, personal courage, excellence and commitment to truth have been subjugated to the progressive false gods of diversity, equity and inclusion. Who needs outside threats to our troops when the most lethal saboteurs are embedded inside the bowels of our own Pentagon and service academies? “Diversity,” of course, is exclusively defined by selective skin color and politically correct pronouns. “Equity” is a farce if you are white, male, Christian and patriotic. “Inclusion” is a grand illusion. Nowhere are these toxic realities more clearly illustrated than in the American military bureaucracy’s vindictive witch hunt against our best and brightest soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and Coasties who have resisted the COVID-19 jab. “I’m frustrated,” Air Force Academy cadet Nathan Suess told me on Monday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as he braced for punishment and retaliation during graduation week. The 21-year-old civil engineering major is one of four seniors who objected to the COVID-19 vaccine because of their deeply-held religious beliefs -- as well as on irrefutable scientific and legal grounds. Suess quietly filed his religious exemption request last fall as a “devout follower of God,” citing aborted fetal cell lines used to develop the shots; the low mortality rate among young, healthy activeduty personnel; more than 600,000 adverse vaccine reactions reported to the government, including permanent heart damage among young men; and the illegality of mandating experimental vaccines not fully approved by the Food and Drug AdministraSee MALKIN on 26

The Elitists Who Want To Rule The World

Klaus Schwab is the head of the World Economic Forum; he founded the organization in 1971. Each year, the WEF hosts a massive conference in Davos, Switzerland, with thousands of world leaders, diplomats and by Ben Shapiro Syndicated Columnist experts on various topics gathering to trade ideas about how best to cooperatively run the world. Lest this characterization be seen as overstating the case, Schwab himself said as much this year in opening the conference: “The future is not just happening. The future is built by us, by a powerful community as you here in this room. We have the means to improve the state of the world. But two conditions are necessary. The first one is that we act all as stakeholders of larger communities, that we serve not only self-interest but we serve the community. That’s what we call stakeholder responsibility. And second, that we collaborate.” This is the call to action for elitists the world over. They appoint themselves the representatives of global interests -- without elections, without accountability -- and then create mechanisms of national and international order to control citizens over whom they claim to preside. Schwab himself has decoded his favorite term, “stakeholder capitalism.” He wrote in Time magazine in October 2020, “Free markets, trade and competition create so much wealth that in theory they could make everyone better off if there was the will to do so.” To do so, however, would require taking hints from Greta Thunberg, #MeToo and Black Lives Matter; it would require “building ... a virtuous economic system” in which companies abandon their core mission of serving customers and shareholders

and instead embrace answering questions like “What is the gender pay gap in company X? How many people of diverse backgrounds were hired and promoted? What progress has the company made toward reducing its greenhouse-gas emissions?” All of this extraordinary arrogance is predicated on a perverse view of how successful change works within decentralized systems. As Schwab himself acknowledges, free markets have generated more prosperity than any system in human history. But that’s because free markets are (SET ITAL) not (END ITAL) a top-down imposition, a system created by conspiratorial muckety-mucks in a back room somewhere. Free markets were the outgrowth of centuries of evolutionary societal progress: gradual recognition that private ownership was the greatest incentive toward work and innovation; incremental understanding that individual rights are the only alternative to endless conflict; step-by-step acceptance that decentralized sources of knowledge are both broader and deeper than centralized ones. The most powerful and durable institutions we have are traditional because, as F.A. Hayek wrote, they are “a product of cumulative growth without ever having been designed by any one mind.” For Schwab and his ilk, however, it’s precisely such an evolutionary approach that must be ended. Instead, he and his rationalist buddies -- brilliant businessmen and ambitious politicians, striving bureaucrats and myopic experts -- will cure the world of its ills, so long as we grant them power. Or, more likely, so long as they seize power in the name of “stakeholders” to whom they are never answerable. One of the great ironies of the past several years is the gap between the elitists’ perception of themselves. To the elitists, their solutions failed because citizens

Government Delays Flights Planning to fly this summer? Good luck. Delays are up. Cancellations, too. Why? Because of the pilot shortage. A pilot shortage? How can this be? by John Stossel Flying is a popular Syndicated Columnist job. Some people fly small planes just for fun. Why aren’t there enough commercial pilots? Because the government passed another dumb law. In 2009, after a Colgan Air crash near Buffalo, New York, killed 50

people, Congress decided that airlines could only hire aspiring commercial pilots who already had lots of flight time. Instead of 250 hours, now they have to have 1,500 hours! “That never made any sense,” says current commercial airline pilot Tracy Price in my new video. The sixfold increase wouldn’t have prevented the Colgan crash. Those pilots had many more than 1,500 hours of flight time. The pilot had 3,379 -- the co-pilot, 2,244. That didn’t matter to the politicians. “We need to improve pilot training, address flight crew hours and service,” said Sen. Frank Laut-

enberg. Demanding more pre-hire flight time discouraged people from trying to become pilots. It had “the effect of pulling up the ladder,” says Price. Few people have the time or money to get 1,500 hours in the air before they can even apply for a job. The number of certified pilots fell even as flight demand increased. The pilots unions didn’t object. “Fewer applicants means higher pay,” explains Price. I say to Price, “This rule is good for you!” “Great for me (and other) professional pilots,” he replies. “If you believe in freedom though, it’s a bit

of an issue.” The union blamed the pilot shortage on poor pay at regional airlines, so I push back at Price, “Some of these regional airlines were paying pilots as little as $21,000 a year.” “(But) there was no shortage of applicants!” Price responds. “Plenty of people were willing to take fairly low pay and live with roommates for a year or two to gain that really valuable jet experience.” Today’s required 1,500 hours doesn’t even create better pilots. Actual pilots get trained in simulators today. The computerized cockpit gives them more useful experience See STOSSEL on 28

North Korea Emboldened By Diplomatic Silence North Korea has been making a lot of noise but few seemed to notice. Kim Jong-un’s reclusive communist regime has fired by John J. Metzler off 23 missiles since the beginSyndicated Columnist ning of the year to the yawns of world opinion. So is another North Korean missile showdown creeping up to surprise the West as we are intensely focused on Russia’s war in Ukraine? It appears Kim Jong-un is seeking attention if not validation as a

global bad guy, a role his elders in Moscow and Beijing seem to comfortably hold. North Korea’s sustained and dangerous antics raise the political stakes in East Asia as the United States faces the appalling aftermath of the Afghan debacle last year. Moreover anguished East Asian allies fear what future actions Beijing’s military may take towards democratic Taiwan. Just hours after President Joe Biden left Asia after an overdue visit to South Korea and Japan, the quaintly titled Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) popped off another four missiles, including an intercontinental ballistic one. The message was unmistak-

able. Some pundits argued earlier that the rocket firings or even an underground nuclear test would transpire during the Presidential visit to Seoul and Tokyo just to gain extra points. Joe Biden’s trip to South Korea as president was politically important and strategically vital. Though the USA’s military defense treaty with the Republic of Korea is unquestioned, the Summit focused on meeting South Korea’s new conservative President Yoon Suk-yeol as well as visiting Samsung’s high tech semiconductor plant. President Biden called the seventy year old U.S./ROK defense Alliance “a lynchpin of peace,

stability and prosperity.” Here we have a good blend of underscoring South Korea’s role both as a vibrant military ally and high tech hub and trading partner. Significantly President Biden failed to go north of Seoul, the vibrant and bustling South Korean capital, to the foreboding Demilitarized zone (DMZ) where at the iconic truce village of Panmunjom so many American Presidents have stood alongside American and South Korean forces at the diving line between both Korean states. The DMZ remains a stark reminder of why we are in Korea in the first place; it evokes Divided See METZLER on 27

appropriate use of those products. Every one of the products you buy and sell have warnings about changing the nature of the product and they are invariably accompanied with a list of potential dangers, if they are altered. I am your Creator. I made each of you. I created you as male and female and every cell in each of your bodies carries DNA information for your particular sex (Genesis 1:26-27). When my Son visited your planet to deliver you from the penalty of your sins, he reinforced our design of male & female, not transgender (Matthew 19:4-6). You may choose to call yourself something else or even make yourself something else through reconstructive surgery but your body, because of my design, is uniquely fashioned to be what you have been created to be. Watching your political leaders bend and break all my laws and design features in order to garner support for their political positions and power is so sad. Leaders must courageously enforce what is right and not forfeit what is wrong. For your President to declare a transgender day and unilaterally support any and all who desire to change their sex, even and especially children as young as 8, is a mockery of me and my will. He and all those promoting this abomination are usurping my will and making their will the new law of the

land. This has been tried repeatedly in history and in every instance, it has failed and incurred my judgment. I am God, even if you don’t think so and even if you declare yourself “god.” You will one day stand before me and give an account, not for your will but my will. If you continue to defy me and my will, you will suffer tragic consequences. Like our previous letter about the debate on abortion, for all who call what I declare wrong a “right,” you may have a moment of glory and prosperity but because you don’t follow my design, your “house” will collapse on you and on your nation. With this issue and many others coinciding with your newfound “freedom” and defiance, you are repeating the mistake I addressed in my book, the Bible. In Psalm 2, I asked, “Why do the nations conspire and the people’s plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his anointed One. Let us break their chains, they say, and throw off their fetters.” (Psalm 2:1-3). You, like those in the past, are taking a stand to oppose me and my design. But listen to my words that follow and consider the futility of seeking to overthrow me, God. “The one enthroned in heaven laughs; The Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath (Psalm 2:4-5). There is only one sensible course of action to

Letters From God

QUESTION: What Are Your Thoughts On Transgender Lifestyle And Its Legal Endorsement? As I promised in my previous letter, I would like to specifically address the social issues that you are facing today, and which are tearing you apart. With respect to my thoughts on the social issue of transgender practices and legal endorsement, I have much to say. By rejecting me and my will and creating your own, you have brazenly made my created design, for maleness and femaleness, a matter of personal choice. From the beginning of time, my standard has been the basis of defining sexuality, yet now, in an era of “doing what is right in your own eyes,” (Judges 21:25) you have not only overthrown me and my design as God, but, de facto, declared yourselves to be “god.” You may think that this is no problem but, in your limited knowledge and sinful hearts, you have begun to unleash a firestorm that will destroy you unless you come to your senses. You have laws protecting the integrity and substance of products made, in order to safeguard the

take and I described it by saying, “therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the sun, lest he be angry, and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 2:10-12). If you ever hope to enjoy life, that I alone can give, you must recognize your terrible mistake and turn quickly back to me and my will. Though you my challenge my Deity and that of my Son, Jesus, because you are not God, you will lose in this battle. Follow my design, it was perfect until you chose to reject it and replace it with your faulty and fatal design. If you do, I will forgive your sins and once again bless your life and prosper you and your country. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

History Made: The Mt. Washington Auto Road Paved Top To Bottom For the first time in its 161 year history, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is a solid ribbon of pavement from the base to the 6,288’ summit. Opened on August 8, 1861, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is the oldest man-made and continuously operating tourist attraction in North America. Built by hand using shovels and black powder to clear rocks, the Auto Road ascends over 4,000’ of elevation in 7.6 miles from scenic Pinkham Notch to the summit of Mt. Washington. For the majority of its history, the road was a rough surface of dirt and then gravel, first traveled by horse and mountain wagon, and then by car at the turn of the century. It has always been a rite of passage for automobiles and drivers, giving credence to the famous bumper sticker: “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington.” The Auto Road saw

ening the surface, and increasing the number and size of culverts for water drainage. Full pavement topto-bottom intrinsically makes the drive on the Auto Road much more smooth and diminishes the likelihood of a road closure, and has been a goal for the family-owned and operated business. The gravel section was prone to “peeling” in rainy conditions, whereby the dirt would come off the road surface and onto the tires of the vehicle, eliminating traction. The Auto Road would close to all traffic when this occurred. Maintenance of the gravel section was labor and fuel intensive. Every day Road Crew staff would water the road surface using several dump-trucks full of water. Tons of gravel would be used each year to repair erosion. The pavement will prevent that material from draining onto the sub-alpine terrain. Nat Putnam, who is celebrating his 40th season working on the Mt.

Washington Auto Road this summer remarked about the paving, “it’s the end of an era.” Car-race enthusiasts already have nostalgia for the iconic spray of dirt at the transition from gravel to pavement in the Subaru Mt. Washington Hillclimb. That event, which will likely return to the Auto Road in 2024, may see even faster times from base to summit. Travis Pastrana broke his own record in 2021 with a blazing time of 5 minutes and 28 seconds. But for guests of the mountain maintaining safe traveling speed at no more than 25 mph, the ride to the summit will remain an exhilarating experience and drivers and their automobiles still earn the bumper sticker with each ride given out at the Toll House. The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens for 7-day a week operations, weather permitting, on Saturday, May 28th. Visit mt-washington. com for the road status and hours of operation.

BIRDS For The

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

A Walk In The Woods by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I’m not going to try to emulate Dr. Seuss, but I think he would have drawn plenty of inspiration from a walk in the woods in New England in May. His classic “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!” comes to mind, but only altered to “Oh, the Colors You Can See.” A recent walk made me think of this. The majority of the walk was along a wide dirt path with shrubby habitat on both sides. Beyond the thickets on one side was a large field and beyond the thickets on the other side were deep woods. It is perfect habitat for a bird walk. The first bird I saw was a male eastern towhee. It was once called rufous-sided towhee because of the unique dark orange color of its sides that complement the otherwise white and black plumage of the bird. The bird’s red eyes are visible when it approaches among the shrubs closely enough. I did not see a female towhee on this particular day, but they are lighter brownishorange where the male is black. A little later in the walk, I heard a loud whistle from the top of a tree. I knew from the clearness of this song and the height at which it was sung that it was a Baltimore

An indigo bunting perches in a tree in New England. oriole. Despite their relatively large size and electric orange plumage, they are often difficult to find because they are hidden among the leaves. This particular bird, thankfully, perched at the top of a dead tree and was clearly visible from a far distance. I used my binoculars to get a better view but the bright orange bird stood out just fine without them. It is always a thrill to see a rose-breasted grosbeak. It is even more spectacular when two males are fighting over the territory and chasing each other around. Often, one of the birds would land within a few yards of where I stood, giving me a front-row view of the namesake rosecolored triangle on its

breast. At almost the same time, I saw my first indigo bunting of the walk. Its brilliant blue shined beautifully in the early evening light. I saw a few more buntings as my walk continued. I heard two familiar songs frequently in the brush and knew I would eventually see both of these birds. The first one I found was a blue-winged warbler, which despite its name, is mostly bright yellow. Next, I found a few male yellow warblers, which as their name suggests, are mostly yellow with a few rusty streaks on their chest and belly. As I made my way towards the field I could hear the bubbly sounds of many bobolinks. En-

tering the field, I saw many of the beautiful birds rise from the tall grasses, fly to a nearby perch in the field to sing and return to the grass from where they started. Male bobolinks are black, white and have a large yellow patch on the back of their head. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the few red-winged blackbirds that I saw in the field as well. My oldest son used to call them firebirds because of the red and yellow patches on the male’s wings. Yes, Dr. Seuss would have had a field day, no pun intended. Any walk during any season is a blessing but to see orange, red, yellow and blue birds along the way is nothing short of magical.

The Nazis Of Copley Square Lecture At Wright Museum In Wolfeboro On Tuesday, June 7th, the Wright Museum will welcome author Professor Charles R. Gallagher, S.J. This is the fourth program of the Wright Museum’s 2022 Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney Education Series. On January 13, 1940, FBI agents burst into the homes and offices of 17 members of the Christian Front, seizing guns, ammunition, and homemade bombs. J. Edgar Hoover’s charges were that the group planned to incite a revolution and install a “temporary dictatorship” in order to stamp out Jewish and Communist influence in the United States. This intriguing book chroni-

cles the evolution of the front, the transatlantic cloak-anddagger intelligence operations that subverted it, and the mainstream political and religious leaders who shielded the front’s activities from scrutiny. Charles R. Gallagher, S.J. is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Boston College. In 2017, he held the William J. Lowenberg Memorial Fellow on America, the Holocaust, & the Jews, at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum,

Washington, D.C. In 2009, his book, “Vatican Secret Diplomacy: Joseph P. Hurley and Pope Pius XII” (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2008), won the John Gilmary Shea Prize of the American Catholic Historical Association. He writes on Vatican diplomacy, the Holocaust, and the intersections of religion and espionage. Doors open at 6 p.m., the program begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10th at the Wright Museum’s DuQuoin Education Center, 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro.

Admission is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made online at www. wrigthmuseum.org/ lecture-series or by calling 603-569-1212. Books will be available to purchase. The region’s leading resource for educators and learners of all ages on World War II, the Wright Museum features more than 14,000 items in its collection that are representative of both the homefront and battlefield. Sports “Equity” by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

NEWS ITEM: The U.S. Soccer Federation has announced a deal to pay the U.S. Men’s National Team and the U.S. Women’s National Team equally, eliminating a contentious pay gap that saw female players earn significantly less. “Equity” is a common buzzword nowadays— kind of like “diversity.” It does seem equitable that members of our men’s and women’s national soccer teams be compensated similarly. Still, some feel that the quest for equity sometimes creates unfairness. Men’s World Cup soccer has been around for almost a century. The first women’s World Cup was awarded in 1991. Does longevity matter? Some wonder. Further, consider the differing followings for men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments. The 2018 men’s World Cup soccer tournament was watched by a record-breaking 3.57 BILLION people. In contrast, the 2019 Women’s World Cup was viewed by “only” 1.12 billion, according to FIFA. Men’s World Cup soccer generates much more revenue than does Women’s World

American women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Cup soccer. Should that fact influence the compensation levels for our respective national teams? Some think so. But would that be “equitable?” Consider the disparate compensation levels for NBA and WNBA players. The average annual NBA salary is $7.5 million. The average WNBA salary is $121,000. That’s hardly equitable. But the average WNBA attendance is around 2600 per game, as compared to an average NBA attendance of over 17,000 per game—92% of capacity. So should market realities impact compensation levels for men’s and women’s sports? Some wonder. Federal “Title IX” legislation passed in 1972

prohibited sex-based discrimination at educational institutions receiving federal monies. Over time this helped create a whole new world of opportunity for female athletes. As a father to some fabulous Concord High School girls’ soccer players, I’m especially grateful that they had sports opportunities earlier unavailable to girls. Still, sports equity came with a price. To accommodate Title IX requirements, countless male sports programs were eliminated. Consider college wrestling. In 1982 there were 363 NCAA wrestling teams. In 2001 that number had dropped to 229 and dropped further still over the following

NO PRESSURE, NO GIMMICKS, NO KIDDING!

years. Was that “equitable” for wrestlers? Some wonder. Others feel the quest for “equity” negatively impacts education. Honors programs have been eliminated in California and elsewhere. Identifying and supporting gifted and talented students is not seen as “equitable” to progressives seeking those “level” playing fields—so to speak. It may be “equitable” to teach to the lowest common denominator, but is it fair—or right— to hold back gifted students in the process? New Hampshire is somewhere around 50th in the nation in terms of identifying and supporting gifted students. Fortunately, Governor Chris Sununu signed HB319 last year which finally requires school districts to pay some attention to this neglected population. A facile reverence to “equity” creates new challenges. Ask those wrestlers whose programs disappeared. Or male swimmers, gymnasts, cross country runners, and so many others whose teams were sacrificed at the altar of “equity.” Should reasonable qualitative fairness trump mandated quantitative equity in some sports situations? Some wonder.

The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

Second Annual Green Beret With A Mission Challenge Registration for the second annual Green Beret With A Mission Challenge on July 15th is open. This charity event is designed to give adventure athlete teams from a Crossfit or other sports background and families a test of endurance while providing a taste of the physical and mental challenges Army Special Forces soldiers face in accomplishing some of their real-world missions. It will be a fun, challenging event led by Army Green Berets.

The Green Beret With A Mission Challenge is a cooperative effort between Swim With A Mission and the Patriot Resilient Leader Institute (PRLI). SWAM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization

founded in 2017 that raises funds to support Veteran causes by running a multi-day event that includes a swim across Newfound Lake; a demonstration of skills by Navy SEALs; a paintball tournament led by Navy SEALs; a “Whiskey and Whiskers” event that focuses military K9’s, and an art program for Veterans and their families. The PRLI is also a 501(c)(3) public charity, operates Camp Resilience retreats in the Lakes Region of

New Hampshire. These therapeutic retreats are available to Veterans, First Responders, and their loved ones to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Since 2014, the organization has impacted the lives of almost eight hundred participants throughout New England. Please visit www. camp-resilience.org, or reach out to us at info@camp-resilience. org or (978) 219-4003. Kurt Webber, the President of the PRLI and a retired Army officer and former Green Beret says that “we are thrilled to partner with SWAM and Ladd Farm again this year! We have add a few new challenges to the course this year that as well as a second difficulty level for each challenge.”. Dan Fielding, a member of the PRLI Board of Directors and a former Green Beret soldier who served in combat in Afghanistan, is leading the team that will be running the Green Beret With A Mission Challenge. He says that this event will be a unique and fun opportunity for endurance, crossfit, and adventure athletes and a tough physical, mental, and teamwork challenge! Black Sea Bass

Contributing Writer

Over the last few years black sea bass have been appearing with increased frequency along New Hampshire’s coastal waters and in the Piscataqua River as far in as Little Bay. Until recently they have been considered rare by most anglers. As a kid, I can remember hearing occasional reports of a black sea bass being caught by a striper fisherman every now and again, but not much more than that. Now, there are so many black sea bass in New Hampshire’s coastal and estuarine waters that they are fast becoming the target of many local saltwater anglers. Black sea bass (Centropristis striata) are members of the grouper family. They are very distinct looking and adults can be distinguished by their brown or black color, a spiny dorsal fin with white bans or tips, and large mouths. Dominant males will grow a large blue hump just in front of their dorsal fins during the spawning season while females usually have distinct vertical barring patterns. They are also protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they all begin life as females, and some females change sex to males between 2-5 years old to maintain a healthy ratio of male-to-female fish for optimal breeding.

To regularly catch sea bass this size you may need to head further south than New Hampshire. New Hampshire is considered to be on the edge of the black sea bass’ range, but obviously it is not outside it. Despite many anglers viewing black sea bass as a southern New England fish, they have actually been in New Hampshire waters for many years. In fact, the New Hampshire fish and Game Department has angler data going all the way back to 1984. Black sea bass prefer very specific habitat. They fish prefer deep water where there is structure. Knowing where to find them is easy if you know the bottom where you are fishing or have a good contour map. Figuring out how to catch them, however, can be a bit more difficult. The most challenging factor seems to be access.

Bloody Point in Newington, Hilton Park in Dover, and the Newcastle bridges are favorite spots of shore anglers, but some of the prime spots, such as the rock piles in the Piscataqua River and along the coast, are accessible only by boat. For kayak anglers, the Piscataqua River has very strong currents, giving them short windows of opportunity before the current becomes too fast to drift over rock piles or stay next to bridges long enough to get their jig to the bottom. Getting, and keeping, that jig on the bottom is another story in the fast current. When I target black sea bass I fish in 20 to 70-feet of water where there is structure. Rock piles, ledges, debris, wrecks, and pilSee MOORE on 25

Scott Philbrick’s father, Walter Philbrick, enjoying his favorite mount while in the U.S. Army, 1953. LLLF from 1 five. By the time my father was that age he had married, had three children, was a veteran in the Korean War, bought a house, and successfully started and ran two businesses. Comparatively, I was single, renting a small apartment, working as a graphic designer, and about to move to western Colorado and live the cowboy life on a mountain mesa ranch. Not much of a comparison, is it? I wonder if perhaps his was the last generation that simply knew how to get things done. So how does this relate to rescuing animals in crisis? We form all different kinds of bonds in life; bonds with friends, bonds with coworkers, bonds with animals, on and on. But the experience of war, by its very nature, brings a bond that is rarely, if ever, found elsewhere in life. And it is in this regard that I wish to tell you about one of our adopters, a man named Ernie who, like my father, served in

Puppy Mia, when first found and rescued. the Korean War. He also served in the Vietnam War. My dad and Ernie, both animal lovers, could have met, and in ten minutes you’d think they’d known each other for years. Through seemingly random chance, people and other creatures of this Earth come into our lives and change us. And we, in turn, change them. The good ones

change us for the better, and bonds are formed. Louis Pasteur notso-famously said, “chance favors the prepared mind.” A strong animal lover, Ernie, veteran of two wars, tragically lost his beloved wife of nearly sixty years, a little less than a year ago. Then he lost his companion dog of fourteen years just a few short weeks

ago. Now here’s where it gets interesting. Teresa Paradis was having dinner with Dot, one of LLLF’s invaluable volunteers, at the regular hangout of the LLLF family, the Circle Diner. Her waitress, April, inconspicuously directed Teresa’s attention to another patron, saying, “you need to help that man over there… he needs a dog!” She was pointing to a man dining alone at a booth, a gentleman, quietly minding his plate. His gold embroidered veteran’s hat, neatly removed and positioned beside him, did not go unnoticed by her, either. Teresa acknowledged April’s prompt, continuing her discussion with Dot. A moment later the waitress returned to Teresa exclaiming, “he’s leaving! Quick… go talk to him!” Teresa approached him as he was signing his tab, and in her uniquely resolute style, playfully reached out and took the pen from his hand. “Do I know you?” he asked, understandably perplexed. With a soft smile, she answered, “well, you want a dog, don’t you?” Chance brought them both to that moment; chance was forming a bond. A brief but warm conversation followed, she left him her number, and a few days later the gears were in motion. Ernie visited LLLF, where he met Mia, a rescued black lab puppy who had originally been found on the street; discarded like meager refuse. Yet her personality and love set about the fragile task of healing Ernie’s broken heart. Ernie is now awaiting the See LLLF on 20

LLLF from 19 ideal companion dog to adopt from LLLF, an adult dog to best suit his specific needs and abilities. The accompanying photo speaks profoundly to what transpired between Ernie, Teresa, Dot, Mia, and April the waitress, who started this whole ball rolling. Chance perhaps, as Pasteur asserted, does indeed favor the prepared mind. Or some might simply call it synergy. Whatever one calls it, it happens a lot at LLLF, and Teresa and her team are always “prepared.” Shifting gears. We recently took in a pregnant rescue cat. Not exactly Earth shattering news for LLLF. A few days after arriving however, she gave birth to one kitten, whom we wryly named Big… and Big is the smallest cat ever delivered at LLLF, tipping the scales at a minuscule 1.3 ounces. At one week old he was 2.5 ounces. Big was hand-fed by bottle for several days, in unison with learning to suckle from mom, until he got

By chance, a pregnant feral cat had been trapped locally, and brought to us in need of an emergency C-section. While she did give birth to six healthy kittens, she

was unable to produce milk. As is the case with so many situations day in and day out, year after year at LLLF, chance smiled upon these wee ones, and the six babies of the feral cat were able to suckle alongside

ings” and bonds being formed through our efforts. LLLF has some needs we’d like to tell you about, as well; perhaps you could help us spread the word. Our primary operations building, the 5500 square foot Brittany Searing Memorial Building which opened in 2016 has served us well as both a quarantine and rehabilitation

facility. But it’s also become our adoption center, and is getting pretty cramped, with lots of mission crossover. We’ve simply outgrown it. The exploding crisis of abandoned pregnant and/or orphaned dogs and cats we take in from not only New Hampshire, but all over the country, when and where we are able, has us bulging at the seams. We find ourselves in dire need of a new building to accommodate these ever-increasing needs. Our vision is for a new building to serve as an adoption and rehab center for small animals; dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc., with a separate ward for maternity and birthing, to include orphaned, abandoned, or neglected animals that find their way to our loving confines. Lastly, I’d like to share that 2022 is our silver anniversary; our Twenty-Fifth year of operating as a rescue & sanctuary. I’ll most likely be writing up a “Silver Anniversary Special” later on this year, but I wanted to at least offer up a small teaser. The monumental results, the See LLLF on 21

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 2, 2022 — dured. So I’m thinking about the nature of the whole “chance” concept, and I’d like to think that Pasteur, upon hearing Ernie’s story, in considering the account of Big and those six orphaned kittens; and through observing all that’s happened in the quarter century journey of Live and Let Live Farm, would have let slip a fleeting smile.

Big, the smallest kitten ever born at Live and Let Live Farm, at 1.3 Oz, next to a Q-tip. LLLF from 20 experiences, the bonds of the past twentyfive years could never have been brought to fruition without the caring hands and giv-

ing hearts of the thousands upon thousands of volunteers, donors, and supporters who have carried and propelled us all throughout the last quarter

Please consider contacting Live and Let Live if you’re considering adopting a loving family companion. Financial contributions are desperately needed and greatly appreciated, as the costs to operate such a facility are staggering. Contributions are fully tax deductible, and 100% allocated to

the care and healing of these animals. Contact Teresa by email, at: tehorse@aol.com, or send donations to: Live and Let Live Farm Rescue, 20 Paradise Lane, Chichester NH 03258. Donations can also be made with credit or debit cards, at: www. liveandletlivefarm.org. We welcome you for our weekly tours, held Sundays at 2:30 pm, to meet the animals of Live and Let Live Farm. If you’re looking to adopt or become part of the working hands and caring hearts of our volunteer family, the tour is where it all begins. Hon. Charles F. Stone SMITH from 3 of Ossipee. The couple had married on May 7, 1893. The case against Mr. Hatch was argued by the Attorney General, Mr. Eastman, and the defense lawyer was E.P. Jewell of Laconia. Dr. Hatch’s mother was one of many witnesses taking the stand during the trial. She spoke about her son’s boyhood days, saying that he had always

been kind, obedient, and truthful. The testimony, during which Dr. Hatch covered his face with his hands as tears flowed down his cheeks, was said to have been heartrending. The last afternoon of the trial involved the closing arguments by the prosecution and the defense, followed by Judge Blodgett’s charge to the jury. The jury began its deliberations

The sentencing was delayed after the counsel for the defense filed twenty objections and asked for a new trial. Eventually Dr. Hatch was sentenced to be imprisoned in the New Hampshire State Prison where he died on June 4, 1902 at the age of 44. The defense lawyer in the Hatch trial, E.P. Jewell, was at one time in a law partnership with Charles F. Stone who became a prominent superior court judge in Laconia. Judge Stone was born in Cabot, Vermont on May 21, 1843, and lived during his childhood on a farm and attended local schools. He also attended college in Vermont where he also taught school, served as a principal in a grade school, and studied law. He moved to Laconia, New Hampshire in 1870 where he continued to study law and was admitted to the bar in 1872. Described as a brilliant lawyer, prominent Democrat, and citizen of widespread popularity, it would appear that Judge Stone was a busy man during his time as a lawyer and then a judge in the lake city. Involved in politics in the Granite State, he was the state chairman of the Democratic Party from 1882 to 1890 and served in the state legislature in 1883-4 and 1887-8, He was the Democratic candidate for Governor in the 1898 election year. The following year he received his party’s vote for United States Senator. “Charley” Stone, as he was commonly called, was said to have been one of the better known See SMITH on 23

When Judge Stone died at the age of sixtysix years his obituary stated that “he had a genial temperament and a pleasing personality that attracted men and his upright character and correct deportment made one once his friend always his friend....As a citizen he was distinguished by his unblemished character, his broad views, and his support of those ideals that stand for what is best in American citizenship. As a lawyer, he was thoroughly prepared...As a judge he was studious, fair, honest, and well balanced, rapid and logical in his conclusions, and correct in his decisions.” I should add that Judge Stone was on the Laconia Board of Education for several years. will remain constant, the meal of fresh fish that (hopefully) follows. They have delicious firm white fillets that keep me targeting them for many years.

Tim holds a cape cod black sea bass pushing five pounds. MOORE from 15 ings will all attract and hold black sea bass. Tackle should include 1.5 to 3-ounce lures depending on how swift the current is moving. Around slack tide you can get away with a 1.5-ounce lures, but as soon as the current picks up you will need to increase your jig weight to as much as 3-ounces or more. My favorite jigs are the 1.4 or 2.8 Elite Deluxe and the Diamond Chain Jigs from Daddy Mac Lures. Since black sea bass often target squid, I sometimes also use 6 to 9-inch soft plastics on a jig head. Black sea bass are very scentoriented so tipping the hook with a strip of squid will sometimes get you more bites, especially when the water is muddy, but I rarely use bait. Jigging methods seem to vary from angler to angler. I drop my jig all the way to the bottom, then reel it up until it is just off the bottom.

Then bounce the jig as fast as you can until you feel a bite. Other times I will bounce my jig along the bottom, but not leaving it sitting long enough to get hung up. My jigging cadence usually depends on the type of bottom structure I am fishing and the behavior of the fish. Sometimes it is usually necessary to reel in and drop back down, because the currents will sweep your jig away (also called scoping) and raise it off the bottom. My favorite way to target black sea bass is by kayak. I find it more exciting and more enjoyable, but depending on where I am fishing, fast currents make prime areas in the Piscataqua River inaccessible. Timing around slack tide gives me a short window in the river, so I will usually head out along the ocean front or to my favorite spots in Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod. Regardless of how and where I fish one thing

MALKIN from 6 tion and undermining informed consent (as determined by courts that ordered the suspension of the military’s anthrax vaccine mandate in 2004). “I could not dirty my conscience” by obeying an unlawful order undergirded by “deception and dishonesty,” Suess told me. Suess and his fellow objectors were left in the dark about their fate until last week, when the Academy publicly outed and humiliated the quartet -- threatening to force them to reimburse their tax-subsidized tuition (upwards of $200,000) and denying them military commissions. The Air Force Academy, increasingly infiltrated by radical leftists who require critical race theory brainwashing and subsidize pagan, witch and Wiccan worship on campus, is the only one of the military academies imposing such draconian penalties. The self-described

“Navy brat” from a family with three generations of veterans believes “critical thinking is imperative for officers.” Joining the Air Force was Suess’ “biggest high school goal.” But he now feels “ostracized” and betrayed by leaders who have “made everything up on the spot” in defense of sham science and unconstitutional orders. “This is tyranny at its finest,” he lamented as he packed his bags this past weekend, but he vows to fight it on behalf of other peers. “We do not swear an oath to obey our leaders,” Suess declared defiantly. “The Constitution always comes before military mandates.” Suess is not alone. As a federal judge in Texas ruled in January in halting punishment for 35 Navy special ops members who refused the COVID-19 shots, “There is no military exclusion from our Constitution ... There is no COVID-19 exception to the First Amendment.” And just this week, a

secretive Navy Administrative Board ruled unanimously that Lt. Col. Bill Moseley, a Navy weapons specialist with 22 years of active-duty service, was not guilty of “misconduct” for refusing to obey a direct order to submit to the COVID-19 jab because of his religious objections. Conveniently, the full ruling is hidden by a convoluted military process that only discloses results when dissenters’ challenges fail. But Moseley’s attorney, R. Davis Younts (who himself served 12 years active-duty in the Air Force and in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps), was able to tell me this week that “it was very clear that the board had legitimate concerns about the lawfulness of the order and whether the vaccine mandate was reasonably necessary to accomplish” the Navy’s mission. “We are supposed to be free-thinking and use our discretion. We are legally bound to challenge unlawful or-

ders.” Younts, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force reserves, is now defending more than 50 military clients fighting to protect their faith. He has filed his own religious exemption request from the COVID-19 shots as well. “This is a very personal fight for me,” he revealed, and “it’s not just about the vaccine ... It’s a very difficult time in the military today for people of Christian faith who hold to Biblical teachings.” In a sane and self-respecting sovereign nation, wise, brave, Godfearing, independentminded warriors like USAFA cadet Nathan Suess, Navy Lt. Col. Bill Moseley and military defense lawyer R. Davis Younts would be celebrated and promoted, not spurned. But in woke, broke America, our military no longer liberates the oppressed. It oppresses the liberated. And all our enemies laugh mightily at our selfinflicted civilizational wounds. Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@protonmail.com. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 2, 2022 — METZLER from 7 Berlin during the Cold War. American presidents would visit to underscore the glaring political lessons and the military significance of our defense commitments. Biden’s East Asia visit had much to do about China, after all the 800 pound Dragon in the room. Conversations focused on isolating and countering Beijing’s military and commercial interests. Yet is China nudging its political comrades in Pyongyang to create another security concern? Possibly so. On 25 May the DPRK launched another three ballistic missiles. Since early 2022, North Korea has launched six Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s). In the meantime the UN Security Council met to discuss a draft resolution on the recent North Korea missile firings. The plan by U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield was to pass yet another international condemnation of the missile tests as in the past. Prior to the vote Ambassador ThomasGreenfield asserted, “The DPRK has taken the Council’s silence as a green light to act with impunity and escalate tensions on the Peninsula. It has engaged in an unprovoked series of 23 – and let me repeat that – 23 ballistic missile launches since the beginning of the year and is actively preparing to conduct a nuclear test.” But in a once rare but now increasingly common abuse of their double vetoes, both Moscow and Beijing shut down the reso-

lution. The United Kingdom deputy delegate James Kariuki later surmised, “We are concerned that the DPRK may resume testing of nuclear weapons… North Korea must not be allowed to test missiles and other weapons with impunity.” So we return to a remarkably similar, if downplayed, situation as in 2017 when the new American President Donald Trump forcefully confronted the North Korean dictator. The ensuing standoff saw Kim Jong-un blink, then agree to negotiations at the Singapore Summit in June 2018, and subsequently shelve his missile and nuclear tests. The Pyongyang regime refrained from provocative missile and nuclear testing for a nearly three years. During the recent Summit with Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon stated, “I commit to resolutely safeguard peace on the Korean Peninsula and encourage North Korea to come forward for dialogue and engage in practical cooperation.” He stressed the “common goal of the complete denuclearization of the DPRK” adding “there is no compromise for security” adding “strong deterrence against North Korea is paramount.” Confronting North Korea’s nuclear ambitions remains paramount for Korean and regional peace. MAILBOAT from 2 bated in the aftermath of this tragedy in Texas, we need to seriously address mental illness, we need to provide adequate security at our schools to prevent these crimes from ever being committed again, we need to enforce current laws and correct deficiencies in systems to make those laws work as intended and we need to take actions that will actually correct these problems not just do something ineffective simply to say “We did something”. STOSSEL from 7 than unsupervised hours of hobby flying. In fact, those hours may leave pilots less prepared. “Flight time does not equal experience,” Faye Black of the Regional Airline Association told Congress. “We waste a lot of time in training, breaking bad habits pilots acquire while trying to quickly get to 1,500 hours.” The politicians ignored her. That’s not surprising. Once government

creates new rules, those rules tend to live forever. Many are just unnecessary. Airlines don’t want to kill their customers, and pilots don’t want to kill themselves, so they self-regulate. The last fatal commercial airline crash was 13 years ago. Flying is much safer than driving, biking, and taking a bus or train. “Safer than any mode of conveyance ever, including walking,” says Price.

But politicians believe that if they’re not passing more rules, they’re not doing their job. So expect more flight delays this summer. “I spend a lot more time than I want to making announcements to people apologizing for being late,” says Price. “We should be looking for ways to expand the availability of airline travel to more people so more people can take advantage of this amazingly safe way to get from A to B.”
