Last Race At Belknap Was The Greatest

Final National Motorcycle Road Held At Recreation Area in 1963 by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

It was at the end of the 99th lap of the 100 Mile National Championship Motorcycle Race at the Belknap Recreation Area in Gilford, New Hampshire, and 19 year old Jody Nicholas, who started strong and had led all but two of the laps around the race track, and was still up front when suddenly “…his machine slid from under him and he was spread-eagled on the pavement…” and his veteran racing opponent George

Roeder, who had been closely pursuing him throughout the race, sped by him to become the leader. This event was the last national championship motorcycle race to be held at the Belknap Recreation Area and, in the opinion of my Dad, Ray Smith, who wrote about the 1963 race in a June, 1964 article, it was the greatest race ever run there. The motorcyclists have come to the area as part of the organized Gypsy Tours in 1917 and the races began at

“Women Soldiers of The American Civil War” The Wright Museum of World War II presents “Women Soldiers of the American Civil War” on Tuesday, June 20th, from 7-8pm. at the Museum, 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH. Doors open at 6pm. Throughout history, women have participated in war efforts not only at home but also on the battlefield as well. Women have always played important roles in army camps: from nursing, to laundry, food service, and, of course, prostitution. For a small but significant number of women, war not only brought them into battle, it motivated them to disguise themselves as men and take up the musket and sword. During the Civil War, it is estimated that more than four hundred women concealed their sex in order to fight. This lecture will focus on the adventures of some of the known women who risked their lives, asking what motivated these women and if they truly were ahead of their time. Professor Sarah Batterson holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of New Hampshire and a joint-M.A. in Anthropology and Women’s Studies. She currently teaches courses in AfricanAmerican history and Gender history at UNH. An avid history enthusiast since the age of eight, in her spare time she can be found reading about the past or exploring historical sites around New England. Admission is $8.00 per person, by cash or check. Wright Museum members are admitted for free. Space is limited, Reservations are strongly recommended to ensure sufficient seating for all. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

My Least Favorite Week

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I know I shouldn’t say it, but I dread this week. I realize that this week will always arrive; not much I can do about it. I also realize that it is my own fault, my lack of preparation that makes it harder than it has to be. Yes, it is the second week in June here in the Lakes Region and that means only one thing: it’s time to put the air conditioners in the windows again. This yearly struggle is nothing I ever look forward to. I put it in the back of my head until the inevitable moment comes when I turn on the TV and hear the frightening news: “It’s going to be a beautiful weekend with temperatures in the 80s and possibly hitting the 90s.” I sit and stare at the TV. I’m not surprised, just unnerved a bit. It seems that only last week it was in the 50s and summer heat would never arrive. After all, it is a short season. Maybe, I thought, I’ll get lucky this year and we will have a cold, rainy summer. But, like my hopes for a New York Jets Super Bowl victory, it only takes a few weeks into the real season to realize that those hopes will once again be dashed. In fairness to me, I did do a bit of preparation ahead of time. I went to a local hardware store and bought some insulation as well as the tiny screws to hold the air conditioners in place that I can never find the

day of the actual installation. Still, the thought that I would never have to use them crossed my mind. That would have been fine; there is always next year. Of course, that wasn’t to be and the bad news from the weatherman with the overbearing smile confirmed to me it was time. The windows in our house are wooden and a bit old. They have a series of ancient screens and storm windows on runners that one can spend hours trying to get to open and close correctly. That one being me. The first task is to bring the air conditioners up from the basement. Each one weighing, in my estimate, about 950 pounds. Once all three air conditioners are upstairs, I take the rest of the day off. The next morning, I prepare for the day by finding anything else to do but install (which is a fancy word for what I do) the beasts. But rising temperatures and the constant stepping over of the things, forces me to action. Tackling the first beast, I begin by carefully laying insulation down on the bottom of the window. I have gotten fairly proficient in this over the last several years. Then I lift the air conditioner and, as the last of my strength begins to seep from my arms, I plop it into the window, knocking out of place the masterpiece of my insulation work. I won’t go into the back and forth that takes place between the placement of the air conditioner and the adjustment of the insulation until all is “close enough”. First, I don’t want to give away all my secrets and, second, there isn’t enough space here to do so. Once the beast is in the window and the window closed so as not to let it

fall outside, it is time for a snack. I’m also pretty sweaty; be nice to have some cool air soon. Feeling energized, it is time to pull out the accordion like sides that will fit snugly into the grooves of the window to keep the cool air from escaping outside. Two hours tops for this job. Time for lunch. I was excited since this year I wouldn’t get caught unaware in searching for those obnoxious little screws needed for final attachment to the window. I had remembered the struggle of spending a hour sorting through our assortment of loose screws and nails last year only to find a couple of flatheads that would work with nary a flathead screwdriver in sight. This is when butter knives come in handy. I proudly opened the box of Phillip Head small screws I had the foresight to purchase beforehand. Unfortunately, it had been a year of moving tools around for whatever reason and now there wasn’t a Phillips Head tool in sight, only five flatheads. After about an hour, I found some flathead screws in the pile. It is now the third day and all three air conditioners are installed. Now I can make my home as cold as it is in the winter when I need to turn on the heat. It’s a shame to think in only four months I will need to take my works of art apart again. Maybe next year I’ll learn how to ride a motorcycle so I have an excuse for something else to do this week. YouTube Banned Me, But Not the Hate Imams One of the many maddening takeaways from the London Bridge jihad attack is this: If you post videos on YouTube by Michelle Malkin radicalizing Syndicated Columnist Muslim viewers to kill innocent people, YouTube will leave you alone. But if you post a video on YouTube honoring innocent people murdered by barbaric jihadists, your video will get banned. I know. It happened to me in 2006. Eleven years later, the selective censors at Google-YouTube still can’t competently distinguish terrorist hate speech from political free speech. Islamic hate preachers such as Ahmad Musa Jibril, whose bloodthirsty rants against non-Muslims reportedly inspired the London Bridge ringleader, have flourished. Meanwhile, other anti-jihad and conservative content creators have been throttled, flagged, demonetized and kicked off the site since the P.C. hammer first came down on me. My two-minute clip, which I titled “First, They Came,” spotlighted authors, editors, politicians, and other targets of Islamic intolerance and violence. Among those featured in the video on radical Islam’s war on Western free speech: Theo van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker murdered by jihadist Mohammed Bouyeri for his outspoken criticism of Muslim misogyny; Salman Rushdie, whom the Ayatollah Khomeini cast a fatwa upon after he published the “blasphemous” “The Satanic Verses”; Oriana Fallaci, the fiery journalist put on trial in Italy for “defaming

Islam;” and the editors of the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper, who faced death threats for publishing cartoons of Mohammed, which prompted violent riots and terror plots around the world. I contrasted the plight of those killed with the hordes of Muslim protesters in London’s safe spaces fearlessly waving their signs demanding that the faithful “Behead all those who insult Islam” and “Exterminate those who slander Islam.” Several months later, YouTube yanked the innocuous, harmless, nonviolent, nonprofane, nonhateful, and nonthreatening mini-film. The company informed me that the video contained “inappropriate content.” I complained across social media -- posting additional YouTube videos calling attention to the ban. But “First, They Came” stayed deep-sixed on my YouTube channel. Other bloggers and video consumers tried to subvert the censors by posting the clip on their sites; it became a game of whacka-mole as the YouTube police hunted it down. Counterjihad activists nicknamed YouTube “JihadTube” or “Dhimmitube” to mock the censors’ acquiescence to Islamist restrictions on acceptable speech by infidels -- as Islamic radicalization videos festered on the site. Three pieces in The New York Times covered my skirmish over the little video. Reporter Tom Zeller Jr. reported that YouTube had emailed him a statement suggesting that my video “violated the company’s terms of service.” YouTube also told the newspaper, “Our customer support team reviews all flagged videos before removing them.” The statement “specifically referred to the part of the YouTube user agreement that forbids users

Can Wonder Woman Just Be Wonder Woman?

In the new “Wonder Woman” movie, the heroine is mystified by the ways of humankind -by Rich Lowry and she doesn’t even read the Contributing Writer internet. The fevered commentary about the new hit film raises the question, “Can’t an Amazonian superhero wield her Lasso of Truth and bullet-deflecting bracelets while wearing an up-armored version of a figure-skating outfit without inciting more battles in the culture war?” This being contemporary America, the answer is, “Of course not.” The critics have swooned, and some of them have literally cried over the movie. This is a bit much. The advancement of women in this country, or even just in Hollywood, didn’t depend on the production of a better female See malkin on 21 superhero vehicle. Nor is it un-

usual anymore to see women beat up villains on screen. This hasn’t stopped people from losing their minds -- a new American core competency -- over “Wonder Woman. Why doesn’t she have armpit hair? Summarizing this controversy that erupted when the trailer was released, The New York Times wrote that “the lack of body hair on the female warrior makes us wonder if feminism was swept aside in favor of achieving the ideal female aesthetic.” (The Wonder Woman character has existed for about 75 years -- and has never once sported armpit hair.) Did you know that lead actress Gal Gadot is Israeli and served in the Israel Defense Forces? Lebanon certainly noticed. It banned the film. Actress Gina Rodriguez tweeted her disapproval, then deleted her tweet under internet pressure. Then there are the clashing interpretations of the movie. It’s

My wife and I live in “the projects.” That’s how I refer to our 18th century farmhouse; a lovely property but one by Ken Gorrell that requires Northfield, NH. near-constant maintenance and remodeling. This home has sheltered nine generations of my family, and I joke that the smart ones moved away. I got stuck with this labor of love. Our contractor is finishing up the last of our roofing projects. Over the past ten years he’s reroofed the other sections of the house, as well as our barn and garage. We saved the kitchen section for last. It was the most challenging due to the unusual way my relatives built the structure. The post-and-beam construction has held up for 200 years, but the back wall is out of plumb more than a foot and the sag in the middle made the roof look a bit like a hammock. Few local contractors were willing to touch it, but ours came up with a solid and affordable plan. I wish we could keep this young man on retainer. Unfortunately for us, his services are in-demand. And why not? He’s able, reliable, and affordable. The main limiting factor to growing his business is the difficulty he’s had hiring and retaining good employees. He told

Graduate Advice

me that he started last summer with six new hires, but none of them lasted. Some were unable to do the work; some unwilling to work. Some showed up drunk or high; after a while some failed to show up at all. I thought about his employee experience while reading an article in the June issue of Business NH Magazine. Written by Ray Carbone, “Construction Trades Struggle to Draw Next Gen Workers” lays out the case that as a state we are failing to provide young people with the skills they need to start a career that could quickly put themselves on a path toward self-sufficiency. (Another article in the same edition showed, from 2005-2015, a 10 percent decrease in the number of Millennials living independently, balanced by a 9 percent increase in those living with their parents and 1 percent living with roommates.) The movie The Graduate turns 50 this year, and with it one of the most well-known pieces of advice to a graduate: “Plastics.” Back then, that advice to Dustin Hoffman’s Ben Braddock was seen as representing everything artificial and soul-crushing about the modern working world. This year, Bill Gates provided his career advice to new graduates: artificial intelligence. For some, getting into a field that will ultimately displace millions of workers will be lucrative and fulfilling. It will also be limiting, not just because it will be open

only to those with high academic abilities, but also because most of those jobs will be concentrated in larger urban areas. What about those with average academics who want to live in our state’s more suburban/

rural mix? My advice for high school graduates is: the trades. I say this as a former white-collar worker who now owns a tradeskill franchise. I’m my own boss and my only employee, which See gorrell on 42

May Day For Britain’s Theresa May NEW YORK— It’s political May Day for Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May after what appeared as a massive miscalculaby John J. Metzler tion in callSyndicated Columnist ing a general election which she narrowly won. Though the ruling Conservative party gained the largest share of seats and votes in the 650 seat Parliament, the party fell sadly short of a majority, thus causing the “Hung Parliament” in which a coalition must again be formed. Theresa May’s roll of the political dice to call for early elections were based on her gamble to win a powerful majority strong unified government which was needed in the wake of last year’s still reverberating BREXIT vote for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. BREXIT talks on the UK/EU separation begins in mid-June amid an uneasy instability in London. As May predicted prior to the vote, “Now more than ever, Britain needs a strong and stable government to get the best deal for our country.” Indeed, but now there’s more confusion both in Britain and throughout the European Union concerning the complicated pattern of EU separation. Tragically Theresa May’s snap election was shadowed by the specter of terrorism, both the appalling attacks in Manchester and London in which Islamist jihadi terrorists hit soft, civilian targets killing 30. Concerning the terrorists she said, “They are bound together by the single

evil ideology of Islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division and promotes sectarianism…Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time.” The Conservatives won 318 seats but that’s eight seats short of a majority. The Labour Party, which has lurched dangerously leftwards under current leader Jeremy Corbyn gained seats and now has 262, a gain of 31 seats. Labour has posted the most socialist and left wing manifesto since the early 1980’s prompting even many former luminaries such as former Prime Minister Tony Blair to distance himself from the current party. As interestingly the Scottish Nationalists (SNP) saw serious setbacks, ironically from the Conservatives, thus likely sidetracking a second Scottish independence vote. Theresa May will forge a “Government of Certainty” with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Yet May’s call for a “government of certainty” somehow lacks the ring and the rhetoric of steely Thatcherite resolve or for that matter anything more than a stopgap solution for a very complicated political problem of her own making. She is viewed as “a weak and wounded leader” according to a good source in London. Her credibility even among the Tories is weakened and recriminations abound. So what does the Hung Parliament realistically mean for Britain and her standing abroad? Again the albatross of BREXIT talks begins with a shadow over the outcome of the proposed break. Yet while the UK may be formally renegotiating its trade patterns with the continent, See metzlerl on 42

To The Editor: Well folks, it’s time. Vincent Paul Migliore for Representative for Alexandria, Ashland, Bridgewater, Bristol and Grafton – District 9. Having committed 10 years in service on Newfound School Board, two as Chairman, one as ViceChair, I’ve learned much through experience, with 14 years of running my own business meeting a payroll and servicing customers, I believe I *finally* have adequate experience to be bold enough to ask to represent you in Concord. For four weeks, look to this source and I’ll provide experienced views on NPass, Wind, NH Kindergarten, the addiction crisis and economic development commentary through this paper. Or, we can speak in person. I’d be happy to attend “coffees and share views. Perhaps more importantly, listen to yours. This is for State REPRESENTATIVE. I’m making my full commitment to serve. Those who know me, understand I only *commit* to things, not just participate. I make 140% effort so I’m happy with 90% of goal. Not unreasonable, but takes a FULL TIME effort to achieve. Run a successful business? That’s required. With that recently behind me, I’m now your FULL TIME representative in Concord. I make that commitment to you. To do so, I must win the Republican Primary on Tuesday, July 18th in Alexandria,

End Deficit Spending To The Editor: If we’re headed for a massive economic slump, it may last for a shorter period of time if we tell Congress to end deficit spending and the inflationary money printing that goes along with it. We should also tell them, however, to budget adequate funding-as long as necessary--for our missile defenses, and for the guarding of our existing nuclear stockpile. Alex Sokolow Santa Monica, CA Editor, Weirs Times

Transition To Plant Based Foods To The Editor: Recently, animal rights activists shut down the 146-year-old Ringling Bros.

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

and Barnum & Bailey Circus after years of effectively exposing them for animal abuse. Can the meat and dairy industry be far behind? The shift toward plantbased eating is everywhere. Fast-food chains like Chipotle, Quiznos, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s offer plant-based options. Parade, Better Homes and Gardens, and Eating Well are all touting vegan recipes. Indeed, Global Meat News reports that nearly half of consumers are reducing their meat intake. Beef consumption has dropped by 43% in the past 40 years. Google CEO Eric Schmidt views replacement of meat by plant protein as the world’s #1 technical trend. The financial investment community is betting on innovative start-ups, like Beyond Meat, or Impossible Foods, while warning clients about “death of meat. Even Tyson Foods new CEO Tom Hayes sees plant protein as meat industry’s future. The industry needs to transition to plant-based foods, or shut down like the Greatest Show on Earth. In the meantime, every one of us can shut the meat and dairy industry out of our own kitchen by checking out the rich collection of plant-based entrees, milks, cheeses, and ice creams in our supermarket. LACONIA motorcycle WEEK 2017 Wright Museum Displaying World War II-Era Motorcycles During Motorcycle Week The Wright Museum of WWII in Wolfeboro, NH, will display three WW II-era Harley-Davidson motorcycles in its Military Gallery during Laconia Motorcycle Week, June 10-18. The Harley-Davidsons are Motorcycle U, Motorcycle UA, and Motorcycle WLA. Harley-Davidson manufactured the Motorcycle U for the U.S. Navy Shore Patrol from 1943 to 1948. The Motorcycle U to be displayed was restored to the way it would have looked during World War II, where it was probably used to patrol the grounds of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The Motorcycle UA, which was produced in 1940, is actually a Mo-

torcycle U. The “A” indicated it was manufactured for the U.S. Army. The Motorcycle WLA was a workhorse. The U.S. shipped large quantities of these motorcycles to their allies as part of the Lend-Lease Program. The largest quantity – over 30,000 – went to the Soviet Union. The U.S. Army used WLAs for police and escort work, courier duties, and some scouting. Harley-Davidson stopped manufacturing the WLAs after World War II, but resumed production from 1949 to 1952, during the Korean War. The WLA to be on display dates to 1940. LACONIA motorcycle WEEK 2017

Jody Nicholas led the 1963 race all but two of the laps around the race track, and was still up front when suddenly “…his machine slid from under him and he was spread-eagled on the pavement…” Nicholas was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War, returned to racing afterwards, wrote for motorcycle magazines, and was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. the Belknap Area in 1938 and continued until that last one in 1963. I wasn’t there for the first or the last of those championship races, but did attend a few in between. I remember being in the car with family members as my Dad drove up to the entrance to the recreation area on race day and we approached the ticket sellers, and the sense of satisfaction, and perhaps privilege by association, as my Dad revealed his “press card” as a reporter of the event and we were allowed to enter without paying. I didn’t know the drivers or much about motorcycles in general or the rules of the race, but there was excitement in the air with the sound of roaring engines and the thrill of seeing the

racers zoom around the track in their effort to travel faster than anyone else.

The 1938 race was 200 miles in length, while the 1963 one was 100 miles. That first national championship in 1938 was won

by Ed Kretz. But what was it about the last race at the Belknap Area that made it so great? According to my Dad , “It had everything.”

LACONIA motorcycle WEEK 2017 because of who was in attendance, again, according to my Dad, “They were all there.” Former Laconia Mayor and publisher of The Laconia Evening Citizen, E.J. Gallagher, who was involved in bringing the national championship motorcycle race to the area in 1938 was there, as was Fritzie Baer, manager of the Belknap Area, and

blew briskly from the west. People came out in numbers large enough to make it the largest crowd ever with 20,000 viewing the 100 mile race and a total attendance at all events of 32,000. It was a safe race with no accidents requiring the use of ambulances on the race track or in the area as a whole. It was also the greatest of all the races

easily recognized in his red hat. County Commissioner Joe Smith was there, of whom it was said that without him there would have been no Belknap Recreation area. Big names in motorcycle racing like Hank Miller and Floyd Cramer were there, along with many sportswriters and photographers. I am going to give some special attention to a motorcycle man who was there in 1963 who obviously had gained great respect from those who knew him. His name is Bill Schietinger, the president of the New England Motorcycle Dealers Association, and described in the 1964 news article as “quiet, modest Bill Schietinger, bellweather of New England cycle fans under whose guid-

ance a quarter-century of racing history was written at Belknap.” Bill was also present at the initial race at the invitation of the then Mayor of Laconia, E.J. Gallagher in 1938 and at each one through that 1963 competition. His support of racing at the Belknap County establishment helped to earn him the position of general manager and many honors through the years. He was described as “…modest, quiet, unassuming, upright and honest in all his dealings.” He was the one to whom people went with problems associated with the yearly arrival of the motorcyclists. Schietinger insisted that 90 per cent of motorcycle riders and fans were “...decent, See smith on 17

ordinary citizens who make it their hobby and vacation…”. Bill started riding in 1908 and his children and grandchildren were all motorcyclists. But let’s get back to “the greatest race ever” at the Belknap Recreation Area. Jody Nicholas was a student at the University of Nashville who played the violin. George Roeder was an Ohio farmer. The two of them, along with the previous winner of the New Hampshire race, Dick Mann exhibited strong performances during the race and a new track record was set by the winner. Neither Roeder or Nicholas went into the pits during the race. When Nicholas fell his machine continued to run and he quickly scrambled to his feet, retrieved his machine, and continued on his way, but Roeder had built up a considerable lead as he and then his rival turned from the straightaway and out of the view of those in the area of the finish line. The crowd waited anxiously for the pair to reappear as they See smith on 18

came down the hill to the hairpin turn and the finish line. When that happened Jody Nicholas was again in the lead. My Dad reported that “Somewhere, somehow on the long straightaway on the back side of the five-sided mountain track Jody had summoned the strength and determination to overtake Roeder and his machine had responded to his super-human effort. Nicholas held onto the lead for the win and the championship.

For those who appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of an era gone by‌

The record for the most wins at Belknap is held by Brad Andres who had four victories, narrowly beating out the driver with the second most wins with three, Joe Leonard. There were three straight years in which track records were set, first by Dick Mann, then by Brad Andres, and Mann again before the best time ever achieved by Nicholas in that last great race. Other winners in other years included Dick Klamforth, Joe Weatherly, Babe Tancrede, Charley

Danies, June McCall, Alli Quatrocchi, Bill Miller, and Eddie Fisher. So as you and I experience another Bike Week in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, some of us will think back on those days of old and the men who raced for the world’s motorcycle championship at Gunstock, known to us then as the Belknap Recreation Area.

Lakes Region Art Association Free Art Drawing Held At Tanger Outlet Gallery Drew Gillett who recently moved to Laconia with his wife, Barbara, is the lucky winner of the Lakes Region Art Association Gallery’s free art drawing, which featured Gerri Harvey’s work, “Lift Off”. Drew is a retired consulting engineer in the field of renewable energy and had been coming to the Lakes Region for vacations with his family since he was 7 or 8 years old. When he and Barbara retired, they decided to move to the Lakes Region area permanently. They had only been in Laconia for a couple of weeks when, looking for something to do, they decided to attend the reception for the Around the Lakes Art Show that was being held at the LRAA Art Gallery at the Tilton Outlets and which featured various local artists. Drew and Barbara very much enjoyed both the reception and show and in the process registered for the drawing to win the original acrylic painting by Gerri Harvey. Never thinking they would win, they were delighted when they were notified that Drew had been selected as the winner of Gerri’s painting. They were particularly happy that the picture was a water scene from the lakes area and plan to display the painting in a prominent location upon completion of their move. Gerri Harvey, a retired registered nurse who lives in Gilford, is an awardwinning local artist who has been painting in acrylics for a number of years and has recently been exploring watercolor and mixed media painting. She has also been one of the association Artists of the Month on several occasions. When she retired from nursing after 40 years she started devoting more time to painting, studying and teaching

Award winning artist Gerri Harvey, right, presents her original acrylic painting, “Lift Off” to drawing winner Drew Gillett of Laconia and his wife, Barbara, at the Lakes Region Art Gallery in Tilton. Behind them is Gerri’s display panel at the gallery painting to others. She is inspired by landscapes and wildlife in the beautiful Lakes Region area of the state and donated her acrylic painting for the May drawing at the gallery. Other pieces of her artwork can be seen at the LRAA Gallery as well as at the VynnArt Gallery in Meredith, Artistic Roots in Plymouth and on Gerri’s website at www.gerriharveyart.com. The LRAA Art Gallery is located in the Tilton Tanger Outlets (near the Customer Service office) and is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from10:00 am to 6:00 pm. In addition to Gerri’s work, the gallery displays original artwork from over 27 other Lakes Region area artists, both emerging and professional, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, photography and digital painting. The Lakes Region Art Association (LRAA), founded in 1940, is a nonprofit group providing educa-

tion and support to local artists, both emerging and professional, in the Lakes Region. For more information LRAA and the gallery see www.lraanh.org

“Real Stories North Of Concord” Inaugural StorySlam To Benefit NH Humane Society At Pitman’s Freight Room, Thursday July 13th

“Real Stories North Of Concord” presents a “StorySlam” on Thursday, July 13th at 7:30pm at Pitman’s Freight Room in Laconia as a fundraiser for the New Hampshire Humane Society. A “StorySlam” is where those interested in sharing a real-life, personal story based on the theme for the evening can register. Twelve storytellers will be selected at random and have up to six minutes to tell their story. (Not all who have a story will be picked if more than 12 names are entered). Stories should be for a PG audience and can be funny, sad, inspirational or all three, but please, no politics or preaching, we all get enough of that everyday as it is. The theme for this Story Slam is: “It Seemed Like

A Good Idea” and judging will be based on how close the story is to the theme, whether or not the storyteller stayed within the allotted time and other categories.

A couple of celebrity judges will be on hand as well as a couple of judges selected at random from those in attendance. There will also be an audience favorite. Prizes will

be awarded and a good time will be had by all. “Storyslams” are hugely popular events across the country, but very few, if any, have been held North of Concord. The hope is to bring this extremely entertaining event to the Lakes Region and north. What better way to introduce it here than with a benefit for one of the area’s favorite charities. Tickets are $15 and all proceeds will go to benefit the New Hampshire Humane Society. More information can be found on “Real Stories North Of Concord” Facebook page.

Those who are interested in telling a story can register in advance by sending their name to realstoriesnoc@gmail. com. (Registering does not guarantee that you will be picked.) Everyone must have paid admission to be participate. Seating is limited so call Pitman’s at 527-0043 for tickets. Pitman’s Freight Room is a bring your own food and drinks venue. Pitman’s is located at 94 New Salem Street in Laconia. Come and tell your story, or just sit back and be entertained by those who do. Some of them might just be your neighbors or workmates.

from submitting material that is ‘unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, pornographic, harassing, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, or encourages conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, violate any law, or is otherwise inappropriate.’” George Washington University law professor Jeffrey Rosen wrote in a New York Times magazine article on “Google’s Gatekeepers” that he “watched the ‘First, They Came’ video, which struck me as powerful political commentary that contains neither hate speech nor graphic violence, and I asked why it was taken down. According to a YouTube spokesman, the takedown was a routine one that hadn’t been reviewed by higher-ups.” Only after receiving fair exposure in The New York Times (my, how times and the Times have changed) did the video magically reappear on my channel. Now, contrast Google/ YouTube’s ridiculous stifling of “First, They Came” with its hands-off treatment of murder-inciting videos of hate imams Ahmad Musa Jibril and Abu Haleema. Their rancid rants encouraging jihad by the sword and murder of nonMuslims have racked up millions of views over the past five years. Millions. Counterterrorism officials in multiple countries have tied their social media poison to jihad plots. The company told Conservative Review’s Jordan Schachtel that it had reviewed the hate imams’ channels and “found that they do not violate YouTube’s guidelines on extremist or hateful content.” The enlightened peaceand-love progressives of Silicon Valley don’t just have egg on their faces. They have blood on their hands.

“a masterpiece of subversive feminism,” according to The Guardian. No, it’s not, according to a writer in Slate, who complains of “its prevailing occupation with the titular heroine’s sex appeal.” Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince, is the spawn of the gods, and such creatures tend to have better-than-average looks, especially when they are depicted in major motion pictures. As for her outfit, most superheroes are distinguished by their inappropriate, physiquebearing costumes, and why would a self-confident Amazonian be different? The movie is certainly a feminist allegory. Diana is doing just fine on the allfemale island of Themyscira when a dude shows up, a wayward American pilot who crash-lands. Then everything goes wrong. She ends up leaving with him into the human world, where she confronts and spoofs mystifying practices (woman squeezing into corsets, councils of war excluding women, etc.) and where World War I rages. This is catnip for feminists, but surely what accounts for the film’s runaway success is its traditional elements. A thread throughout is the lighthearted cross-cultural romance between the fearsomely powerful, if nonetheless feminine, Diana (she delights at babies, ice cream and snowflakes) and her human love interest. Diana is an admirably idealistic instrument of outraged innocence. Her Amazonian ethic means she rejects dishonesty and cynical maneuvering. She doesn’t exactly fight against the Germans so much against warfare in general. But she is righteous and brave. By the end, Diana comes to realize that humankind is worth saving, despite our flaws. Perhaps the least of them, although an annoying one, is our inability to simply enjoy a deft, entertaining summer blockbuster.

Space Cake Double IPA

clown shoes beer Ipswich, Ma.

clownshoesbeer.com

by Jim MacMillan Contributing Writer

If you ask any child (at least the level-headed ones), they will tell you they are very afraid of clowns, especially under their bed. Where the heck any of this concept stems from is well beyond my comprehension. But sometimes clowns can bring us fun and laughter. Been to a circus in your life? I bet you giggled at clowns racing around the the big top. Missed that moment, sorry; you should have been there. Well, we have all of that and more in our focus beer today courtesy of Clown Shoes. Mercury Brewing in Ipswich, MA, brews all of Clown Shoes’ offerings. Owner Greg Berman quips on their website about coming up with the company name. They wanted to be set apart from the other brewing companies and they must have succeeded with this iconic idea. Clown Shoes has at least 60 different offerings that have landed on shelves around New England since 2012. Some are current, others are oneoffs and 58 are already retired. And their label art is just amazing! Find out more about Clown Shoes at https://www.clownshoesbeer.com. A brilliant golden yellow hue and an antique white head generously greet you at the first pour of Space Cake. This head sticks around quite a while and laces your glass as you partake. The nose or aroma at the rim of the glass speaks of toasted bread, maybe some caramel malt, pine and citrus. With a medium mouthfeel, this

D.A. LONG TAVERN tasty double IPA barks hop flavor in your first encounter. Floral and spicy notes join in the celebration of this wonderful brew. Silky smooth, malty as a double should be and a subtle hop bite are your final thoughts when you complete your journey. Among the many Double IPA’s out there, this is one that is a ‘Must Have’ in your collection. This 9% ABV beverage drinks like a 6.5% since you are concentrating on the hop goodness and not the booziness that can happen with larger beers. True to form, character and style, Clown Shoes hits this one out of the park. But then again, all of their offerings are this way! BeerAdvocate.com has officially rated Space Cake

DIPA as ‘Outstanding’ and awards it a 91 out of 100. Many out there adding their favored votes have put it as high as 5 out of 5 which is quite a feat! You will find it at Casen-Keg in Meredith (I saw at least 5 bottles there recently) as well as other fine beer providers. Clown Shoes has a bunch of great offerings so try them all when you get the chance‌ and I’m not clowning around! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com

A tractor display and free tractor rides are part of the special Father’s Day farm to table brunch being held at Moulton Farm on Sunday, June 18. “Tractors definitely had to be part of this special

event,” says John Moulton, owner of the Meredith farm. “We often get questions from kids and adults about the tractors we use at the farm, so we thought this would be a good way to enable people to see some of them up close while enjoying a great meal on this special day.” The brunch buffet will be open between 9 am and noon on Sunday, June 18, and the free tractor rides and tractor display will be at the same time. The buffet features dishes that incorporate produce grown at the farm in addition to seasonal fruit, delicious baked goods, egg and meat dishes prepared by the farm’s kitchen and bakery team. Seating is underneath a tent overlooking the farm’s fields and is on a first-come, first-seated basis. The brunch buffet costs $16.99 plus tax per person with a special price of $9.99 plus tax for children 10 and under. The farm’s regular farm to table brunch buffet series starts in July. The farm’s farm to table dinner series will start in late June. More details

are available at Moulton Farm’s website at moultonfarm.com. Moulton Farm is located at 18 Quarry Road off Route 25 in Meredith and practices sustainable agriculture and is dedicated to providing the highest quality fruits and vegetables while preserving its rich soil for future generations. In addition to growing its own produce, the farm offers vegetable plants, herbs, annuals, perennials, fruit trees and garden supplies including soils and amendments. Also available at the farm are baked goods and prepared foods from the farm’s kitchen and bakery, cider doughnuts from Cider Bellies, seafood from Sal’s Fresh Seafood, and a quality selection of meats, cheeses and other items from northern New England producers. More information can be found at www.moultonfarm.com or on Facebook at Facebook.com/MoultonFarm.

THE CELTICS AND THE DRAFT The 2017 NBA draft is a week from today—June 22—and for the first time since 1950 the Boston Celtics have the top pick. The burning question is: What will Celtic General Manager Danny Ainge do with the pick? With the Celtics a young and deep team that was one of the NBA’s “Final 3 this season, perhaps they could trade the pick for an established star who could help them to the next level—the NBA Finals. (As this is being written well in advance, if Danny has already traded the pick, you’ll have to excuse me.) The names of several stars have been bandied about, including that of Golden State Warrior Kevin Durant. Would you trade the pick for rights to someone like Durant? Actually Durant will be a free agent so the Celtics could just make him a great offer and sign him directly and trade the pick for LeBron James. This scenario is not entirely implausible. The 28-year-old Durant expressed interest in Boston before heading to Golden State. Having just won a title with the Warriors, he may need a new challenge. The notion of the Cavaliers trading LeBron—an Ohio native—might seem fantastical, but it would make great sense for Cleveland from a business perspective. A 14-year NBA veteran, James will soon be 33 years old. He’s

LeBron James a big guy whose knees and ankles have taken a terrific pounding. He may only have a year or two left. There’s a place for sentiment in sports, but the NBA is a business. The Celtics kept the “Big Three (Bird, McHale, Parish) around until they all declined about the same time—like the One-Hoss Shay. The team was then non-competitive for 15 years. The Cavaliers would be smart to get a first pick for the aging LeBron. While there are no guarantees regarding top picks (see below), theoretically they’d be giving up LeBron’s last two years for a potential superstar with a 10-12 year future. Such a deal would create a short-term firestorm in Cleveland, but eventually it could pay off handsomely. Loyalty has its place but don’t forget that LeBron bugged out of Cleveland in 2011 in search of title rings— which he acquired in Miami. A year or two of LeBron and Durant in Boston would create a media sensation, incredible expectations, and major “chemistry questions. It’s unlikely to happen, but fun to consider.

BUSTS Does anyone remember LaRue Martin? He was the NBA’s overall top pick in 1972, selected by the Portland Trail Blazers, who could have selected Julius Erving or Bob McAdoo. Martin was a major bust. Twelve years later Portland took Sam Bowie when they could have chosen Michael Jordan. Other top picks who See moffett on 40

Or make a loop over the two peaks and back to your car is about 2 miles. I like visiting both peaks and I don’t think it makes much difference whether you choose to hike the loop clockwise or counter clockwise. But one thing I like to do is to park my car where I am planning to end my hike. I prefer to warm up hiking the lower portion of the loop trail first. This day I parked my car at the Peabody Lodge because I wanted to hike Artist’s Bluff first and then Bald Mountain. The west trailhead is across from the Cannon Peabody Lodge entrance on the far side of the north parking lot, this is the parking lot that is blocked

I started up the trail and turned right on the Loop Trail, marked with red blazes. The trail goes gently downhill and intersects with the trail that leads up to Artist’s Bluff. This is nicer than walking the road between the two trailheads. I turned left and headed up the short and steep trail. The steepest sections have nice rock stairways. rock outcroppings just off the trail that offer grand vistas too. Up and over and then down until I reached the Bald Mountain spur and I headed up. This trail up to the top is more difficult. This peak is a true minimountain. Near the bare ledgy summit you might have to scramble on all fours. Even though the distance is short it truly feels like you reached a big bald mountaintop.

I gather that most people skip visiting this fine peak. While there were dozens and dozens on Artist’s Bluff there were only a few people up here. I find that this is usually the case. There are still a few iron pieces here and there bolted into the ledge. A reminder from a time long ago when there no cars flying up the parkway, no ski trails on Cannon Mountain and there was a large hotel, the Profile House standing near where the Tramway is today. These iron pieces might have held in place a handrail or a viewing plat-

form to delight the guests of the hotel. When the Profile House burned, the owners decided not to rebuild but to sell Franconia Notch to the State of New Hampshire. Franconia Notch State Park was born in 1928. From the top of Bald Mountain this is the best place to study Cannon’s ski trails and to look for bears foraging on its grassy slopes. When I finished the loop I only had a short walk across the parking lot to get back to my car. Have Fun!

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is celebrating a birthday this week. MOFFETT from 35

didn’t exactly have Hallof-Fame careers include Joe Smith (1995, Warriors), Michael Olowokandi (1998, Clippers), Kwame Brown (2001, Wizards), and poor old injuryplagued Greg Oden, selected by the star-crossed Trail Blazers in 2007. There are no guarantees. Do you remember that the Cleveland Browns picked defensive end Courtney Brown with the top pick in the 2000 NFL draft? I didn’t think so. But you may know who the New England Patriots picked in the SIXTH round that year—199th overall. A dude named Tom Brady. Sports Quiz The Celtics traded with

the St. Louis Hawks to get the #2 pick in the 1956 NBA draft, with which they took future Hall-ofFamer Bill Russell, who’d lead them to 11 titles in 13 years. But who was the #1 pick that year? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports standouts born on June 15 include New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft (1941) as well as Tommie Smith (1944) and John Carlos (1945), the two sprinters who gave the black power closedfist salute on the awards stand during our national anthem after winning gold and bronze medals respectively at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Sportsquote “We wish Jordan were 7-feet, but he isn’t. There just wasn’t a center available. What can you do?

Bartolo Governanti, Agent

Jordan isn’t going to turn this franchise around. I wouldn’t ask him to. He’s a very good offensive player, but not an overpowering offensive player.” – Chicago Bull general manager Rod Thorn after drafting Michael Jordan in 1984. Sportsquiz Answer The Rochester Royals took Sihugo Green as the top NBA draft pick in 1956. State Representative Michael Moffett was a Professor of Sports Management for Plymouth State University and NHTI-Concord. was one of the requirements I gave to the franchise broker who helped me find this business. I didn’t want the headaches that come with employees, headaches that my contractor friend knows all too well. In his article, Mr. Carbone describes the struggles those in the trades are having to attract workers, despite solid pay and on-the-job training. The trades suffer from a lack of status in a labor market more attuned to “sexy” high tech. Few young people are exposed to the joys of building things, either at home or in school. Millennials prefer virtual reality to reality in their leisure activities. But even with all those news stories about mounting college loan debt, high drop-out rates, and the number of new graduates not finding jobs in their degree field, our high schools are not offering the vocational education and training programs they used to. The focus on STEM in

our high schools should not come at the expense of the trades. A good tradesman can earn enough to raise a family in New Hampshire, and won’t start off under the burden of college loans. If we truly want to attract and retain young workers, we should teach the virtues of bluecollar career fields, targeting potential candidates in middle and high school with curricula aligned to certification programs in fields like construction, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. Since many people in the trades are self-employed or work for small businesses, we must also make it easier to start and operate a small business in this state. With our Republican governor and majorities in the legislature, there is no reason why New Hampshire couldn’t be the most small-business-friendly state in the nation. Ken can be reached at kengorrell@gmail.com

Britain has striven for reinvigorated bi-lateral trade pacts with many key nations European states such as France and Germany as well as with countries such as India. Yet on the more local level the Party Manifesto still stresses, “The Conservative Party is the party of enterprise and of the entrepreneur. We understand that small businesses are the wellspring of growth. They form a key part of British life.” Indeed the UK has seen strong economic growth with the recent conservative governments. Yet, May’s conservatives hardly possess the political grist of the former Thatcherite party which was far more philosophically wedded to free markets than to wider governmental regulation. When it comes to NATO and defense the current government will hold to the agreed 2 percent GNP military spending. Interestingly Labour supported this point as well. The

government will equally keep its high levels of overseas development aid spending at 0.7 percent making Britain one of the highest foreign aid donors in the world. Britain will remain a strong player in the United Nations. There’s no question that May will remain close to the USA and shall be a reliable partner in the international arena. That’s the good news. But will Theresa May’s “Government of Certainty” bring the needed stability and confidence both to markets and to citizens? Sadly, I feel the UK may be facing another election before too long. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea, China.
