*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Making Them Proud?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

There should be a lot of Fourth of July parades on the actual Fourth of July this year since it falls on a Friday, making it easier for everyone. After all, there is nothing more annoying than having to celebrate our country’s independence, where thousands gave their lives for the privilege of freedom, on a weekday. That is an inconvenience that no one really wants. That’s why we usually wait until the weekend to have parades and cookouts and alike. Just like our forefathers had planned. I’m kidding of course. I’m pretty sure our forefathers would be happy to see it celebrated every year on the actual date, but that is no longer to be. Still, I’m sure that recognizing the Fourth of July on the Fifth or Sixth of July isn’t the only thing that would have them turning over in their graves. First off, I think the forefathers would still love many of the parades that go on around the country. Some people even dress up like colonial folk so we all can remember how uncomfortable those clothes must have been on a regular basis. This was a sacrifice in itself. I don’t think they’d be too thrilled to see the election year parades though, with every Tom, Dick and Harriet who is

running for public office managing to insert themselves somewhere between the local High School Band and the proud veterans from the VFW. To me, these politicians and their blinding, forced smiles, surrounded by their legions of sign waving followers, really diminish the meaning of the parade. They might as well be carrying large signs announcing a giant mattress sale in town. After all, it is the same thing. I’d give them a pass if they did something in the spirit of the parade like walking on stilts wearing a gigantic Uncle Sam hat or maybe even juggling. That would get more of my respect. But they all usually just do the same boring things: wave and smile. The only bright spot is that you won’t have to engage in meaningless small talk with them at the town cook-out since they have to get to a lot of parades that day. There much more smiling and waving to do and time is of the essence. Speaking of sales, I’m pretty sure our forefathers would be none too pleased in how we use the Fourth of July to sell anything and everything. It’s not that they would be against capitalism and free enterprise, that is one of the founding principles of this country and it still exists, though to a lessening degree every year. I believe they would take issue with the fact that it is one of the only times of the year we recognize who our founding fathers are, but not for what we should recognize them for. It is not surprising that some kids today only know George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and

Benjamin Franklin from television as the guys down at the local car dealer whose most memorable words are: “No Credit, No Problem and “Drag It in or Tow it in, we accept anything. Sure the Gettsyburg Address was okay, but what’s in it for me? Another thing the forefathers would take issue with in our Fourth of July celebrations is fireworks. Sure, there is nothing better than a wondrous display of beautiful colors and designs igniting high in the sky above the heads of awe-inspired crowds. The Red, Whites and Blues giving us all some pause to realize how lucky we are to live here. Our forefathers would love that. I doubt they would care much for the knuckleheads who like to drink a lot of beer and blow a few things up with cherry bombs and ash cans, usually after midnight. But then again, these knuckleheads think any weekend night in the summer is the Fourth of July or, more obviously, they don’t think at all. All in all, I would guess that our forefathers might just ignore all of these shortcomings and be happy that we are still celebrating our Independence all these years later. They did good. Let’s hope we can do better. ******** By the way, thanks to all my supporters in my run for governor this year, your grassroots work is really making a difference. I hope to meet some of you personally this Fourth Of July as I make my way from town to town to participate in the local parades. Right now, I have a dentist appointment. Catch up with you later.

Back Stage Sneak Peek To The Editor: Pleasant surprises are everywhere in the Lakes Region. I experienced one of them Sunday afternoon. I was invited to watch an informal “run through of Godspell at the Interlakes Theatre in Meredith. This musical is based on the Gospel according to the writings of St. Matthew. Now for those, like me, who aren’t theatre savvy, the “run through is a bare bones production putting all the individual rehearsed pieces together. It doesn’t include any special lighting, sound enhancements, painted sets or makeup. When the show actually opens it will include all those things. The “run through did include professional actors with dynamic voices and energetic dance numbers. Yes, PROFESSIONAL! I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much. After all, this theatre company performs in a high school auditorium. To my amazement the location had nothing to do with the huge talent of the performers. Before I realized it I was tapping my foot to the music and a feeling of joy overcame me. The musical’s message is familiar. The actors bring it to life with great feeling and emotion. My visit made me realize I had made judgments based on location. I’m writing this letter to encourage all of you not to make the same mistake I did. Take advantage of what Interlakes Summer Theatre has to offer. Professional actors

Obama’s Enticements To the Editor: Most Americans know that illegal immigration hurts Americans and want our immigration laws enforced. However, illegal immigration benefits the Washington political class, so President Obama, like several Presidents before him, doesn’t seriously enforce our immigration laws. President Obama exacerbated our illegal immigration problem by announcing that he won’t enforce our laws against “young people. Now young people from around the world believe that President Obama welcomes them to come here illegally. Previously most illegal aliens were adults who avoided border agents. But President Obama’s announcements have enticed many tens of thousands of children to accept the dangers (e.g., illness, death, rape, enslavement) of traveling hundreds of miles to come here illegally. Young and unaccompanied children cannot care for themselves and need help upon arrival. Even though the administration anticipated this flood of illegals six months ago, our

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. border patrol and support agencies have been overwhelmed. Tired, weak, and often sick children are crowded into filthy, smelly rooms with inadequate furniture, sanitation, ventilation, and health facilities (so bad that no photos are allowed). Now illegal aliens are being sent around the country and released into the public. Some illegal aliens bring into our unprepared communities dangerous, highly communicable, and sometimes drug resistant diseases that are unknown in the US or were eradicated decades ago. President Obama has created this new humanitarian crisis, not to benefit the American people, but to advance his own personal objectives. President Obama’s actions are directly responsible for every death, every rape, every child sold into slavery, every American who becomes sick or a victim of a crime or accident caused by an illegal alien, every family that struggles because illegal aliens take their jobs or lower their wages, and everyone who struggles to pay their high taxes that fund the costs of President Obama’s failure to enforce our immigration laws. In pursuit of his personal objectives, President Obama willingly sacrifices the health, safety, and wishes of the American people and the safety of the people, including children, that he entices to come here illegally. Guest Editorial Another Middle East War Quagmire? Recent upheaval in Syria and Iraq spotlights President Obama’s dangerously haphazard military and foreign poliby Jim Rubens c y s t r a t e g y Rep. Senate Candidate in the Middle East. The United States is weakened in the eyes of both our allies and our enemies, making us appear irresolute and confused. Just nine months ago, with Jeanne Shaheen’s support, the President asked Congress to back his ill-conceived “redline” bombing war against Syria, designed to weaken Syrian President al-Assad by strengthening the rebel militants seeking to overthrow him. Among those militant groups we had been helping is the Islamic State of

Iraq and Syria. Over past weeks, ISIS has turned against us and has used the weapons and training we provided them in Syria to gain control of a large swath of Syrian and Iraqi territory. Over this past weekend, ISIS has driven Iraqi forces back to Baghdad where they have concentrated in an effort to hold the capital. Now, some “hawks” in Washington want to redirect our bombs against ISIS. What would bombing ISIS accomplish aside from redirecting their hatred away from their Shiite enemies and toward the United States? ISIS is a new type of hybrid military force, where highly trained combatants quickly mass when necessary to conduct operations and, to avoid losses during bombing raids, can disperse invisibly into urban civilian populations where See rubens on 39

Exposed: How the VA Red-Flags ‘Disruptive’ Vets Imagine how much better off America’s veterans would be if the federal government spent more time delivering actual by Michelle Malkin care and less Syndicated Columnist time compiling tyrannical lists. The death-inducing secret waiting lists for patients are just the tip of the iceberg. Did you know, for example, that the VA keeps a database on “disgruntled” and “disruptive” vets that results in arbitrarily restricted care? Disabled Air Force veteran and veterans advocate/attorney Benjamin Krause has been raising questions about the system for months and warning his peers. Under the VA policy on “patient record flags” (PRFs), federal bureaucrats can classify vets as “threats” based on assessments of their “difficult,” “annoying” and “non-compliant” behavior. The VA manual says the flags “are used to alert Veterans Health Administration medical staff and employees of patients whose behavior and characteristics may pose a threat either to their safety, the safety of other patients, or compromise the delivery of quality health care.” That last phrase is priceless. Untold numbers of vets are dead, and legions more have languished because of the VA’s failure to deliver “quality health care.” The Office of Special Counsel just confirmed to President Obama this week that vets across the country were exposed to contaminated drinking water, dirty surgical tools, untrained doctors and neglectful nurses -- and that whistleblowers were retaliated against or ig-

nored. Yet, the VA’s soulless paperpushers seem more preoccupied with flagging and punishing “disruptive” vets who have dared to complain about their disgraceful treatment and abuse. Get this: Among examples of patients’ behavior referred to the VA’s “Disruptive Behavior Committees” (yes, that’s what they’re called): venting “frustration about VA services and/or wait times, threatening lawsuits or to have people fired, and frequent unwarranted visits to the emergency department or telephone calls to facility staff.” As Krause explains, the Disruptive Behavior Committees are secret panels “that decide whether or not to flag veterans without providing due process first. The veteran then has his or her right of access to care restricted without prior notice.” Veterans need look no further than the IRS witch hunts for reason to fear abuse of this monitoring system. The definition of “disruptive” is completely arbitrary. That’s not just my opinion. The VA inspector general concluded last spring that the bureaucracy “does not have a comprehensive definition of what constitutes disruptive behavior.” Krause writes: “While I am sure some veterans need some form of a flag, I am also aware of numerous veterans who were unfairly targeted for a variety of unreasonable reasons.” Krause told me this week that “the bean-counters” may have flagged at least one veteran for being “too expensive.” And “trouble-makers” who are educated and know their rights are especially vulnerable. It’s absolutely chilling. “This discussion of patient record flags has me fired up,” Krause

Welkom to Football—World Cup Keeps Surprising Finally some good global news! The World Cup in Brazil continues to captivate international audiby John J. Metzler ences with a Syndicated Columnist mix of amazing soccer and increasingly surprising results. Paradoxically, early in the tournament the powerhouse teams were nearly all knocked out of the running; Spain, Italy, England and Portugal. Others like the USA, Costa Rica, France and Uruguay surged forward. So the field is open for some serious upsets as the sporting extravaganza passes its midpoint. Football, or soccer as we call it here in the USA, represents not only the proverbial beautiful game but also a clear-cut manifestation of national pride and sporting prowess. It’s about excellence to be one of the 32 teams at the World Cup as well as nationalistic team pride to keep the momentum going on the pitch. When the Netherlands plays, there’s a sea of orange spectators. In their first stunning win (5-1) over arch-rival Spain, the Dutch King and Queen were in attendance. When the Wilhelmus Anthem is played, there’s a power surge of orange positive patriotism. And look at the ecstatic Team USA fans, with the banner One Nation/One Team, a positive reflection of a country in NEW YORK

such a deep political funk. Listen to the national anthems. While we are all familiar with France’s stirring Marseillaise or the USA’s Star Spangled Banner, the South American anthems seem based on Neapolitan arias. Many players sing along with pride, others stand mum. Brazil the host, has been widely criticized for sloppy preparation but happily the games are going smoothly and safely. Actually Brazil hosted the World Cup back in 1950, the first FIFA football event since WWII. In that tournament Uruguay won. Indeed, the World cup has been an extraordinary proving ground for both football and national standing. Hosting the World Cup while costly, allows for a corresponding flow of economic development, tourism, and prestige. As with the Olympics, countries vie to host the World Cup to be placed on the pedestal of national pride. South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup saw a surge of recognition, goodwill and standing. It’s also about national prestige. World Cups create sports winners and political breakthroughs. The 1954 World Cup was won by Germany; this was an extraordinary breakthrough for the defeated country in the postwar era. The tournament win importantly and psychologically signaled Germany’s reacceptance and return to the family of nations. Germany last won the World Cup in 1990 on the eve of its reunification.

The teams playing in Brazil are ironically reflections of globalization. Many of the players don’t play in their home countries but on powerhouse high paying foreign teams. Portugal’s Ronaldo plays with Real Madrid.

Holland’s Arjen Robben plays in Germany’ s Bayern Munich, and Robin van Persie is on Manchester United. France’s amazing Karim Benzema is with Real Madrid. Germa-

A Lame Duck Country? Pundits are pointing to President Barack Obama’s recent decline in public opinion polls, and saying that he may now become another by Thomas Sowell “lame duck” Syndicated Columnist president, unable to accomplish much during his final term in office. That has happened to other presidents. But it is extremely unlikely to happen to this president. There are reasons why other presidents have become impotent during their last years in office. But those reasons do not apply to Barack Obama. The Constitution of the United States does not give presidents the power to carry out major policy changes without the cooperation of other branches of government. Once the country becomes disenchanted with a president during his second term, Congress has little incentive to cooperate with him -- and, once Congress becomes uncooperative, there is little that a president can do on his own. That is, if he respects the Constitution. President Obama has demonstrated, time and again, that he has no respect for the Constitution’s limitations on his power. Despite his oath of office, to see that the laws are faithfully executed, Barack Obama has unilaterally changed welfare reform laws, by eliminating the work requirement passed by Congress during the Clinton administration. He has repeatedly and unilaterally changed or waived provisions of the ObamaCare law passed by Congress during his own admin-

istration. President Obama has ordered Border Patrol agents not to carry out provisions of the immigration laws that he does not like. We see the results today in the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants entering the country unimpeded. President Obama’s oath of office obviously means no more to him than his oft-repeated promise that “you can keep your own doctor” under ObamaCare. Why do we have a Constitution of the United States if a president can ignore it without any consequences? The Constitution cannot protect our rights if we do not protect the Constitution. Freedom is not free, and the Constitution is just some words on paper if we do not do anything to those who violate it. What can ordinary citizens do? Everything! Theirs is the ultimate power of the ballot that can bring down even the most powerful elected official. The most important thing the voters can do is vote against anyone who violates the Constitution. When someone who has violated the Constitution repeatedly gets re-elected, then the voters are accomplices in the erosion of protection for their own freedom. Laws without penalties are just suggestions -- and suggestions are a pitiful defense against power. After voters have failed to protect the Constitution, the lastditch remedy is impeachment. But Barack Obama knows that he is not going to be impeached. Who wants to provoke a Constitutional crisis and riots in the streets? And, worst of all, end up with Joe Biden as President of the United States? Some cynics long ago referred to Barack See Sowell on 46

Going To The Dogs Means Success For These Entrepreneurs by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It was nearly a year ago when Cristy Martel and Danyelle McCormick decided to leave their corporate desk jobs in Boston and take the leap into the unknown. Today, they are the hardworking and proud owners of the successful Four Paws Inn in Meredith. The Parade Road Doggie Day Care business has been in existence since 2003 when it was opened by original owner, JoAnn Ellis until it passed hands last September to Martel and McCormick. “We thought it would be fun to work in a Doggie Day Care or maybe even own one,” said Martel of their decision and never having

owned a business before. “I googled Doggie Day Cares for sale, found the Four Paws Inn, came and met JoAnn, negotiated a deal, put our house on the market and it sold in four days, quit our jobs and told our family and friends we were leaving. It all happened within a month.” With no experience, except with their own three dogs, the pair took a leap of faith, came to New Hampshire, spent ten days learning the business with Ellis and then were on their own. “Here it is a year later and we have tripled the number of dogs we have taken in since we started,” said Martel explaining that on their busiest days they are caring for as many as thirty dogs in a cage free environ-

ment. “It is all much harder than we thought it would be but we have found ourselves doing very well.” Well enough, in fact, that they have been working hard on renovations and improvements to the twoacre facility so as to be able to take on even more dogs and have it be a wonderful experience for both the animals and those who care for them. (Since they started they have hired three part-time employees, not something they had envisioned at first either.) Some of those renovations include new fencing in different areas as well as enclosing another section of an existing barn for even more heated space for Cristy Martel (L) and Danyelle McCormick, the owners of the winter. They will also Four Paws Inn in Meredith. The two bought the Dog Day be renovating the barn for Care business last year with no prior experience and have See paws on 36

Yours Truly, Sharon LaVigne, Sarah LaVigne and Sarah McCann have fun on Mount Hale, elevation 4,054 feet. We ascended Mount Hale on the Hale Brook Trail and descended via the abandoned Fire Warden’s Trail. Mount Hale was our choice for my friend’s first hike of the season. I assured them that this hike would be a breeze especially when compared with their last fall hike crossing the peaks of the entire southern Presidential Range— Monroe to Jackson. Hale is one of the less strenuous peaks on the New Hampshire 4,000 footer; #37 of 48. Hale’s ranking might make you think otherwise but the peak has no lengthy approach. The Hale Brook Trail climbs steadily from its trailhead on Zealand Road and reaches the summit in just 2.2 miles. I was already up north and my friends were driving up from the New London area so we met at the top of Franconia Notch at 10:30 am. Yes, it felt ridiculously late in the day but our hike wouldn’t be an all day hike. Since we had two cars I suggested that we drop mine at the end of Haystack Road so we could descend via the abandoned Fire Warden’s Trail. My friends weren’t convinced this was a good idea but were willing

“You Have a LLAMA?” by Dawn Thomson Contributing Writer

My family and I are asked this question frequently….along with “Why do you have a llama?”, “How did you end up with a llama?”, “Don’t llamas spit?”, and our favorite: “What do you do with a llama?” It started with a phone call we received one early November day. A Danbury couple had adopted a herd of 4 llamas, from a family whose kids had lost interest in them. Sadly, shortly after their adoption, one of the llamas got sick and died. Another tried to jump the fence of their new enclosure, broke her leg, and had to be put down. Then, a few days later, the new owners came home from work to find the third llama mysteriously missing from the paddock. Their only llama left, Miss Ayra, was beside herself with grief. Although her owners considered finding her a new companion, they decided against it. They suspected that wildlife was responsible for their

recent mishaps, and they didn’t want to put any more animals in danger. But they didn’t want Miss Ayra to be all alone either, so they asked if we would take her in at our rescue farm. I told them honestly, that I didn’t know the first thing about llamas, but that I would at least come take a look at her. When I arrived, Miss Ayra was frantically pacing back and forth along the fence line, visually searching the surrounding woods, while uttering a heart-wrenching guttural moan. It was the saddest sound I had ever heard. That was all it took. I decided on the spot that we would take her to our farm, until we could find her a home with other llamas. And thus began my search. I called llama and alpaca farms, as well as other rescue sites, hoping to place Miss Ayra with some same-species friends. The timing was unfortunate, because at that time of year, most farms and breeders were trying to downsize before winter. I had no takers

for poor Miss Ayra, and I worried about her being without others of her own kind. So I asked a lot of questions as to the best way to care for a solo llama. I was told that she would not get along with horses or donkeys, but that as long as we had goats... which we did…she would integrate just fine with them. I was also told that llamas don’t like to be confined in a stall…even at night….and that she would require a run-in shed for her to come and go in, at will. This information just added to my worry. We didn’t have a run-in shed, nor the time or resources to build one before winter set in. So we tried introducing Miss Ayra to our goats, in hopes that they would ease her loneliness during the cold nights ahead. Well, Miss Ayra had other ideas! She absolutely despised our goats, and began that horrible guttural moaning again…to make certain we were well aware of her dissatisfac-

PET OF THE WEEK HEARTS Could you even imagine a prettier kitten than HEARTS? Big green eyes, sweet, cuddly dispositoin and petite to boot! Hearts was one of 4 kittens born to a mother that was in very poor condition when they all arrived at New Hampshire Humane Society. The mother cat was so ill she required strenuous veterinary intervention that included a blood transfusion. Somewhat oddly, Mum was adopted before her offspring. Little Hearts, is a special kitten. We feel she has a birth defect in her eosophagus that requires she eat a specific diet. While special dietary needs do not preclude this little cat from adoption, the very special animal lover will be who says “I can love and care for that little girl”. Hearts is tiny, about 3lbs, in all other areas happy. She gets along fine with dogs and cats in her staff foster home, but of course, a permanent forever home is next on her life plan. Consider this sweet, adorable little bundle of fluff, she has much love to give. She certainly deserves a second chance. If you’re interested, visit or call, and ask for Gina, her special adoption counsellor! Call 524-3252 or check www.nhhumane.org

Mississippi GOP Establishment: What Were You Thinking? As we observe and many of us will celebrate “the July 4th holiday” , it is time to rebel again taking on by Niel Young Advocates Columnist another tyrant and a government that wants to tax and control us. But, my heart aches realizing that my “enemy” includes many of my fellow Americans – Republicans who use the Party just to get elected, those who do not believe in the U. S. Constitution, ones who have forgotten about the rule of law. Barack Hussein Obama by design and bullying is close to having our America proclaimed: DEAD. In a year when this election is the most important next to the 2016 presidential election, there is a group doing all they can to kick success in the teeth, thus assisting Hussein Obama in his mission. No, these people are not Democrats. You have known this group for decades. They are those Establishment Republicans who obviously feel they are the Elites of all that is GOP. (http:// teapartyupdate.com/gopattack-ad- spending-isfast-and-furious/GOP Spends $9.7 Million to Attack Republicans – But Only $3.7 Million to Attack Democrats: If you needed more proof that the Establishment is hell-bent on attacking Tea Party candidates, a report on campaign expenditures confirms if. Or as comedian Bill Engvall says, “Here’s your sign.” A recent study by the Center For Public Integrity revealed that from January 1 through May 6, Republican PACs and Outside groups have spent about $9.7 million ATTACKING

Republican candidates in advertisements and other communications, , and only around $3.7 million to attack Democrats. Democratic groups have only spent $67,000 attacking other Democrats. ******************** E-mail from somewhere in NH: I got a call from a lady this morning who is a regular listener to your radio show. She said, “I really wish Mr. Young would stop bashing Republicans. When we are going into elections is not the time to help the Democrats to get elected. There is a time and place to point out the deficiencies in our candidates but whacking them now only makes the Democrats rub their hands in glee and that is never a good thing. I guess I’m going to have to turn off this show til after the elections or my blood pressure will burst. I know you are conversant with Mr. Young as he mentions your name frequently so that’s why I’m calling you……I hope you give him my comments.” MY response: Tell her I admire her for picking a side, and when the NH/ National GOP accepts conservatives I will lay off. I cannot see that happening. The Establishment will do what they always do, choose a “Cochran”. Does anyone think it makes me happy to possibly lose the senate? No, but with recent years actions by the ESTABLISHMENT GOP we are at the point where if we do not take them to the woodshed in 2014, the ESTABLISHMENT will not allow for good people to hold office, and they will choose another bozo as the nominee for president. At that point; all is lost with this group of greedy power hungry republicans, and

there will be no hope for the country. also important contributing factors when a site plan is developed. Tall trees, large shrubs, small bushes and ground cover create natural layers to supply the proper habitat in small spaces. By varying the height of growing things, you accommodate bird species that spend most of their time on the ground as well as those that prefer low, bushy cover or treetops. Plant variety also helps to meet wildlife needs through all four seasons of the year. As a main element of your habitat plan, trees and shrubs provide food, cover and nesting sites. However, you can’t rush Mother Nature. Patience is more than a virtue when it comes to creating a backyard habitat, it is a necessity. But over time, with careful attention, you will find your property has come alive with the sights and sounds of birds and other wildlife.

To increase the likelihood that birds will come and hopefully nest in your yard, add certain natural features that appeal to them. Hedgerows, for example, are more likely to attract nesting birds than that “golf course” green look many homeowners try to achieve each year. Twiggy or thorny shrubs like holly or virburnum are attractive to many birds as are briar patches, brambles and brush heaps. Every section of our country has unique climate and soil conditions that will determine your choice of what to plant. As much as possible, try to incorporate varieties of trees and shrubs that are indigenous to your region. These native plants have had centuries to adapt to local environments and will prove hardier and more disease-resistant than exotic varieties. Look around at the conditions in which your natural vegetation grows. Then, choose plants appropriate to your property. For instance you would want to plant willows in wet areas and pines in the open, sunny areas. The time you invest in research and planning before you turn one shovel of dirt assures that the tallest trees don’t wind up in the center of your

tion with her new stall mates. But although Miss Ayra avoided the goats like the plague, we noticed that out in the paddock, she was hanging out with our horses and our two miniature donkeys. We even caught her and the equines, mutually grooming each other more than once. So we decided to try letting her sleep in a stall with the donkeys one night. When we snuck out to take a peak, we found all three of them laying snuggled together in their fresh shavings, heads peacefully intertwined, like they had always been a family. It was an endearing sight. Every night thereafter, when it was time to come in at dusk, Miss Ayra would be the first critter lined up at the barn doors, waiting to come into the barn stall, that she now shared with her short-legged equine buddies. By the time Spring came and other llama folk became interested in adopting her, we decided it wouldn’t be fair to separate Miss Ayra from her newfound family. So here she remains, in her lifelong home, at Reuben’s

Rescue Ranch. Miss Ayra reminded us that every animal, like every human, is unique‌. with their own personality, likes and dislikes. Before adopting any animal, it’s our duty to educate ourselves to the needs and behavior patterns of their particular breed or species. But we must also be open-minded and willing to honor each critter’s individuality, and make adjustments accordingly. Here are a few other things that Miss Ayra has taught us: Her breath smells like overcooked broccoli‌unpleasant but true. Our llama rarely spits at others‌unless you’re trying to trim her ultra-thick coat‌.or if you’re a goat, of course. Our sophisticated llama does not show her affection by smothering others with kisses and hugs‌. those demonstrations are for dogs, horses, and the god-forsaken goats. Our llama does exhibit her happiness by kicking up her heals in great midair twists of joy, as she gleefully bolts around her paddock. Our llama may not want to be scratched and brushed like some of her other barn mates, but

she does show her utter contentedness with life via her daily siestas, as she lays splayed out in the sunshine of the barnyard she calls home. So in answer to those infamous questions‌..â€?Yes we DO have a llamaâ€? , “Now you know the story of HOW she came to join our farm familyâ€?, “No our llama does not spit very often‌.at least not at humansâ€?, and “We just let our llama be a llama‌.and we love her very much, just the way she is.â€? If you would like to meet Miss Ayra or any of her other barn mates, see below for more information for how and when you can visit Reuben’s Rescue Ranch. Dawn Thomson is an independent columnist who, with the help of her husband and two children, runs a private animal sanctuary, called Reuben’s Rescue Ranch, located at 161 Route 104, Danbury, NH. Their mission is to provide a permanent safe haven for animals in need, as well as offering educational opportunities for the public to share hands-on experiences with these beloved creatures. Reuben’s Rescue Ranch is open to the public for visitors, on Saturdays 10am-5pm, from mid May through late October. Group outings are available at other times by appointment. Farmfresh eggs are available for sale, plus they offer an on-site thrift shop, with all proceeds going directly to support the animals. Donations can be made directly to the farm, or to the Reuben’s Rescue account at Osborne’s Agway in Belmont. For more information, call 630-2239, or email ReubensRescueRanch@myfairpoint.net. Home Design: The Value Of The Ideal Exterior Color - When it comes to designing a home - whether it’s new construction or a renovation - choosing beautiful exterior colors and complementary accent hues is critical to creating an appealing household. “To select the right colors for your home, view siding colors as an exterior project tool that both turns a home into a showpiece and increases its value,” says Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Color Association of the United States. Color and architecture trends vary from city to city across the United States. The homes and buildings within a neigh-

borhood define its character and in some ways, culture. Before deciding on the best design, take into consideration the local geography and design trends. Here are four general recommendations to help a homeowner determine the best color choices for a home: * Location - Consider the neighborhood as a whole. Think about the next-door neighbor and the homes down the street. Regardless of the neighborhood, the streetscape - sizes and facades of homes, landscape architecture, balance of light and shade - plays a role in creating an idyllic neighborhood

and affects the value of individual homes and communities, overall. * Color combinations - Selecting the right combination of colors for a home varies, but a good rule of thumb is to use three to six, depending on the siding and trim of the home. . * Balance of color choices - A home’s visual balance can be disrupted by color hues that don’t mix or match. The eye is naturally drawn to light colors, so consider pairing a brighter, lighter garage door with a darker siding shade. * Color performance - A home is a reflection of the person and family in it.

It’s also an investment. If exterior products are both functionally and aesthetically sound, they offer

THE

a greater curb appeal, which can also help with resale value when the time comes.

DEAR TIM: I’m now retired and starting to attack a huge list of projects. One of them is building a simple shed, and I have no clue how to cut and create a simple roof rafter. I know it can’t be that hard, but I’m confused. What’s the process, and do you think a rookie with little or no experience can cut simple rafters to create a basic gable roof? --Paul E., Canton, Michigan DEAR PAUL: Congratulations on your retirement and deciding to stay active. Roof framing is one of the aspects of construction I savored as a builder and carpenter. One of my planned retirement projects is to create a detailed video series showing how to do it. I’ve got good news: Not only can you cut a simple common roof rafter, but you can also, with minimal guidance, cut hip and valley rafters along with all the jack rafters that connect to them. The tools you will need are a framing square, a tape measure, a pencil and a saw. That’s it. It will also help you if you recall some

A roof rafter on a doghouse or a mansion is just the hypotenuse of a right triangle. Make a simple line drawing of a gable and you’ll see that it is just two right triangles standing back to back, mirroring one another. If you look at a standard carpenter’s framing square, you’ll quickly see you have two of the legs of the triangle in that tool. They form the 90-degree angle. The third side, or hypotenuse, of that triangle can be created by just connecting one of the numbers on each leg of the framing square. That’s the magic of creating a roof rafter in its most basic form. The pitch of common

roof rafters is designated by identifying the rise of the roof per foot of run. You may hear a carpenter say, “Your house has a 4/12 roof. What he’s saying is the roof on your house rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. (In the United States, the run figure in the denominator is always given as 12.) If you lay a framing square on a table and look at the numbers on the outside edge, you’ll see they start counting out from the corner. What your carpenter would do is go up the narrow leg of the framing square to 4 inches and go out on the fatter leg 12 inches. If you lay a straightedge between these two points on the framing square, you’ll cre-

ate the sloped part of the triangle. The first thing you need to do is determine your roof slope. How many inches of rise will your roof have per 12 inches of run? You might want to match the slope of your house roof, or you can go with a 4/12 roof slope, as that will shed water but it’s not so steep as to be hard to work on. The next thing you need to do is determine the width of the shed. You need this measurement because half of it will be the base of your big triangle. Let’s say you’re going to have a shed that’s 10 feet wide, and you’ve decided to go with a slope of 4/12. This means your simple line drawing of your roof will show the peak of the triangle to be 20 inches above the top of the walls. That’s because for each foot of horizontal run from the outside of the shed wall, the roof climbs 4 inches, and five times four equals 20. In reality, the peak of your roof will be probably 23 inches above the actual top of the walls. This happens because you will make a little birdsmouth cut in the base of the rafter so it sits flat on the top plate of the wall. Most rafters extend down past the edge of the exterior wall, creating an overhang. Roof overhangs are good things because they keep rainwa-

ter away from the sides of the building. You will have a heel above the notch in the rafter, and the heights of these heels vary with the size of the roof rafter, the width of the wall, and the size of the birdsmouth cut. This is the part of the job that will confound you. Here’s how you use your framing square to measure and cut the lumber for a rafter: Starting at one end of the piece of lumber, lay the square on the flat board and use the outside edges of the square and align the roof slope numbers you’ve decided to use. You’ll notice the narrow leg of the framing square makes an angled line across the lumber. Draw that line with a pencil. That will become your plumb cut up at the top of the rafter where it touches the opposing rafter or a center ridge board. Before you move the framing square, make a pencil line across the lumber along the bottom edge of the fatter leg of the framing square. Slide the framing square down the lumber and align the narrow leg on this mark and repeat the marking process so you create a cascade of small triangles that represent your roof slope. If your shed will be ten feed wide, you’ll end up with five of these triangles and sets of marks as you march down the piece of lumber.

Making the birdsmouth cut where the rafter sits on top of your shed wall is not too hard. The framing square legs create both lines for you. Use the square to make one last final line that’s parallel with the first line you drew at the far end of the rafter. This line extends down from the tip of the last small triangle you created. Align the framing square one last time with your roof slope numbers and be sure the wider part of the square falls across this last line. It will form a 90-degree angle to the last vertical line. Trace along the square a line that extends from the last vertical line about two inches. This tiny little triangle of wood, once cut out of the rafter, makes a tight corner allowing the rafter to sit flat on top of the wall and the other side of the notch fitting tight against the vertical face of the outside of the shed wall. You may have to make a couple of test cuts to get this right. Good luck! Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for FREE at www. AsktheBuilder.com. The Winnipesaukee Watershed Association is offering lake ecology cruises aboard our new Floating Classroom! Beginning July 1 and running through Sept. 5, educational cruises will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week throughout the summer. The ‘Floating Classroom’ is a fun and informative hands-on lake ecology program for adults, children, students, and summer campers who are interested to know what shapes Lake Winnipesaukee’s natural beauty. The tour features a 90 minute boat excursion on a pontoon boat, where participants will learn fun and interesting facts about the history, geology, and ecology of the lake, as well as more serious threats and water quality issues facing the lake. Passengers will have an opportunity to ‘be the scientist’ through collecting water samples, measuring water clarity,

will be performing in the Cafe Building Deck, or on the porch of the Headquarters building if inclement weather requires. They are a 7 to 9 piece band, depending on performer availability and will play up to a 90 minute session, including an brief intermission. During the concert, there is commentary on the music, instruments, and the bandsmen’s involvement with the troops during the Civil War. Closing Cannon Fire will take place at 5pm Because of the various other Civil War Re-enactment Battles commemorating major battle anniversaries from the War, the number of units and re-enactors available to the NHVA has been limited. We do not hold a true battle re-enactment at the NHVA; there was no fighting at the Weirs and the NHVA mission was to provide peace for the veterans following battle. We do still make every effort to continue to bring the tradition of the Civil War to the property to remind the public and present day veterans of the legacy our Civil War heroes left for us in this beautiful place.

Patenaude from 11

The trail was in decent shape, surprisingly little mud and all the stream crossings were easily rock hop-able. About half way up we noticed that summer was much later at arriving at the higher elevations. Spring flowers and numerous Lady Slippers were still in bloom and lined the trail. We enjoyed taking the time to admire all the flowers. We only met one couple and their dog coming down the trail and they said they hadn’t met anyone else. Considering the parking lot was full we guessed that the others must have headed over the Lend-aHand Trail to Zealand Falls Hut or perhaps shared our plan. The sky was cloudy but the threat of rain was low, perfect weather since Hale has no grand vista to enjoy

Sharon, Sarah and Sarah working their way across Hale Brook. since the fire tower has been long gone and the trees have grown thick and tall all around the clearing on the summit. There was even a small breeze that teased the bugs enough to keep them from biting and maybe the DEET we covered all over ourselves

helped too. Just a little past noon we sat on the summit and munched our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We had put forth a good effort and everyone seemed in tip top shape. I described the Fire Warden’s Trail’s See patenaude on 35

lovely White Birch Glades and how it ended along the bank of the not so small Little River and soon we were happily descending. This abandoned trail is a popular winter route for snowshoers and skiers

and it certainly appears to have become popular all year around now. The trail is clear, the path’s foot bed is worn and the blow downs have been cut and removed. I used my hiking poles to clear a few of the old water bars.

The trial was lovely. The tree’s new bright green leaves glowed and soft ferns blanketed the glade’s forest floor. There were a few muddy sections but they were easily avoided. When we popped out below onto the North Twin Trail’s east river bank herd path I was surprised to see that a rock cairn marked the intersection. The cairn wasn’t there the last time I was here and the path is so well worn it is obvious anyway. The Little River roared and its waters cascaded over the many rocks and boulders that line its bed. The walk down the old railroad grade was pleasant and we were back to the car in no time. Our marvelous walk in the woods over Mount Hale was about five miles long and my friends had a splendid start to their hiking season. Have Fun.

there is either popular support or sufficient fear. To lastingly degrade ISIS, bombing would need to be accompanied and followed by an occupation of much of Iraq for years or even decades by 30,000 or more American boots on the ground. Bombing wars such as Jeanne Shaheen’s also entail collateral damage, including death and injury to innocent civilians, including women and children. As we’ve seen, Americanled training of Iraqi security forces has proven a nearly complete failure. Supposedly trained indigenous Iraqi forces immediately shed their uniforms and turned and ran even when threatened by far smaller ISIS fighters, who have instilled fear by conspicuously torturing and killing captured Iraqi soldiers. Clearly, ISIS forces are prepared to wait, for years if necessary, for any prospective American forces to withdraw. Bombing and American boots of the ground would do nothing to quell the centuries old hatred between tribes within Iraq’s boundaries and roughly associated into three groups, the minority Sunni and Kurds and the majority Shia.

Iraq’s boundaries, arbitrarily imposed following World War I by the then colonial European powers, bear little relationship to tribal geography. Bombing, occupation, and pacification have done nothing and would continue to do nothing to instill a desire for democratic republicanism among these tribes. Replacing the corrupt Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki will not resolve the underlying problem that the warring tribes do not want and will not accept shared power in a unified Iraq. The reality is that Iraq as a nation cannot be saved. No more American blood or treasure should be sacrificed to that end. The Shia who dominate the central government do not want American troops in Iraq. Committing a token 300 military advisors, as President Obama has ordered, would make them prime targets for hostage taking to bargain for the release of more prisoners being held at Guantanamo. Other than clandestine forces needed to neutralize terrorists posing direct threat to Americans, the United States should at least temporarily evacuate American civilians to avoid hostage-taking risk.

The rival tribes will fight it out, likely resulting in an Iraq partitioned into autonomous Sunni, Kurd, and Shiite regions. It is these tribes’ problem, not America’s, that Iraq’s oil reserves, refineries, and pipelines are “inequitably located among these likely regions. The Kurds are generally American allies and we should help them as necessary to defend themselves against ISIS. In return for that help, we should pressure the Kurds to protect Christians in their territory. War must be a last resort where US national security is directly at stake. We must resist the call to war where our national security is not directly threatened or as a means to impose our values or to gain access to resources in other nations. This is prudent, self-interested use of our power, not isolationism. To achieve trade, regional stability, and humanitarian objectives, we have better tools: unilateral and (better) coordinated economic sanctions, diplomacy, cultural and economic trade, humanitarian aid, and the engagement of regional powers willing to act in their own interests for regional stability.

Because war may become necessary, the United States should retain the world’s strongest and most technologically advanced military. We must never again fail to provide the brave men and women who volunteer to defend us the healthcare we owe them. We must be unrelenting in the ongoing war against terrorists targeting the United States and our national security interests wherever these threats might emerge. Al Qaeda has established a presence in North Africa, the Middle East, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and in South Asia. The United States must also secure our borders, continue to conduct on

the ground intelligence gathering on suspects and surgical strikes to take out individuals who pose a direct threat. We do not need to commit American soldiers to hold or occupy territory to conduct such defensive operations. If there is to be another war anywhere, Congress must approve it as required by Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution, a case must be made to the American people that our national security is genuinely and directly at stake, and that we have a plan to both win and exit. Jim Rubens is a candidate for United States Senate.
