The Grand Drape from the Moulton Opera House, Laconia, will again be on display at the Laconia Public Library from Wednesday, July 20, until the end of August. Restored in 2014 under a $16,000 grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council, the drape — which reproduces the classic engraving, ‘Morning on the Nile,’ but in rich, full color — is now permanently installed at the library/ When not on display, the 30- by 24-foot drape is rolled up out of sight behind a valance. The Moulton Opera House, which stood on Bank Square from 1887

until it was demolished around 1970 cost $70,000, was considered the most elegant opera house in New England, outside of Boston. The grand drape had been painted by Eugene Cramer, a scenic artist for 24 years at the Sumter Opera House in Columbia, S.C., who had a measure of regional fame in the field.

First Stop at Soho

Book Reviewer

Whether you’re headed to the mountains, the lake or the ocean for a summer vacation or just to your favorite reading spot at home I recommend a stop at Soho Press (www. sohopress.com) before you go. You’re sure to find an author and a story to give you pleasure. I first discovered Soho Press ten years ago when my husband gave me James R. Benn’s Billy Boyle for our anniversary. The book is remarkable, the author is outstanding, and I soon learned that the publisher, Soho Press, offered many wonderful authors and great novels. My two latest reads from Soho Press are Gary Corby’s The Singer from M e m p h i s (M a y 2 0 1 6 ) and Cara Black’s Murder on the Quai (June 2016). “This is the Public Service. We never take competence into consideration.- The Singer from Memphis If you’re looking for a mystery that has a bit of everything – ancient curses, conceited cats, superior spies, horrifying homicide - The Singer from Memphis (not that singer and not that Memphis) Corby’s latest Nico and Diotima adventure should go on your list.

Nicolaos is Ancient Athens only private investigator and while he gets satisfaction and remuneration from the commissions he takes on, often when the job is over the satisfaction comes from making it back to Athens alive and the remuneration is never quite sufficient to the deed. He’s come close to death or disgrace numerous times in the course of his career, but with the able assistance of his priestess wife, Diotima, Nico finds the murderers, solves the crimes, and saves the day for Athens. The investigations are often complicated by Nico’s boss, Pericles, “the first citizen of Athens, who arranges the contracts but seldom has much to offer by way of implementation and who al-

ways has a sneaky supplemental objective attached. In The Singer from Memphis Nico is hired by wannabe historian, Herodotus, to accompany him to Egypt so that Herodotus can write a first-hand account of the ongoing war between the Hellenes and the Persians. The Egyptians, allies of the Hellenes, are rebelling against the Persians who have invaded Egypt. They are doing well against the Persians and keeping them out of the Greeks’ hair, except for one spot, Memphis, the capital, where the Persians have established a stronghold. Egypt is teaming with three armies, secret agents, bureaucrats and crocodiles, yet without a decent cup of wine to be had. When you read any of See montague on 21

Candidates in M’Boro To The Editor: The Lakes Region TEA Party is pleased to announce that Congressman Frank Guinta and Gubernatorial candidate Frank Edelblut will speak and answer questions at its July 20 meeting. The meeting begins at 7 PM at the Moultonborough Fire Station which is on Route 25 a little North East of the Holland Ave intersection in Moultonborough (address: 1035 Whittier Hwy, Moultonborough, NH), parking and entry is at the rear. The public is invited to listen and participate in the Q&A sessions. Congressman Guinta is running for reelection to his third term in office. His focus is on helping middle-income Americans prosper by fixing job killing laws and regulations that reduce working hours and family incomes, on growing the economy to provide better jobs, on protecting New Hampshire small businesses, and on protecting Social Security and Medicare on which so many Americans depend. As the two-term Mayor of Manchester he cut taxes, implemented a tax cap, and cut crime by 17%. Congressman Guinta is a conservative voice in Congress, breaking with Republican leadership on crucial votes including the Omnibus, the re-authorization of the Patriot act and the Puerto Rico bailout; he intends to continue being visible to and accessible by his constituents.

Our Story

Gubernatorial candidate Frank Edelblut serves as the State Representative from Wilton, NH and as their Water Commissioner. He wants to bring his perspective as a successful entrepreneur to addressing New Hampshire’s problems, searching for what works, not what is ideologically correct. Frank says, “I want New Hampshire to be the first state businesses think about when deciding where to locate, and the first state people think about when looking for a place to raise a family.â€? “I want the people of New Hampshire to put each other first‌.â€? Don Ewing Meredith, NH.

Presidential Respect To The Editor: We hear a great deal about how the American people have little respect for the Congress or the Presidency. Much is being said and much is being written on the subject. You can write a whole book on the subject and still not explain the reasons, nor understand why the public has such a low approval rating for our legislators. I feel, even with all its flaws, we still have the best system of government in the World. Our founding fathers had a great deal of respect for the people. They had such a high level of respect for the people, that they wrote the Constitution in order to limit the power of the government over the American

people. Which brings me to President Clinton and Presidential respect. Back in 1995 to 1996, President Bill Clinton had a sexual relationship with a 22 year old intern, named Monica Lewinsky. I remember democrats (and the left leaning press) doing everything they could to down play the scandal. Of course the republicans wanted Clinton impeached. In fact he was impeached by the House but not by the Senate. The Senate later acquitted Clinton of all charges. One aspect of the scandal was that President Clinton had sex in the Oval Office. One comment I heard from people was “all he did was have oral sex. For me the issue isn’t the act, although isn’t it sexist for a boss to have sex with an intern? To me the problem is where it occurred, the White House Oval Office. For me it is the level of disrespect to the people. When I think of the Oval Office, I think of President Lincoln sitting in that room, discussing with his cabinet about the Emancipation Proclamation. I think about President Roosevelt talking about the Normandy invasion, or Truman contemplating about dropping the Atomic bomb. I can only imagine the discussions on dropping the bomb or invading Japan. I think of President Kennedy, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, sitting in the Oval Office, talking on the phone to Nikita Khrushchev, trySee mail boat on 12

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Real Fantasy World

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Have you heard about the new Pokemon Go craze? It’s the newest fun game you can play on your phone. It is another great invention to help people waste more time. The idea for the game came from someone who saw that a vast majority of the population spent the better part of their outdoor time waking while looking straight down into the screens of their phones hoping something someone else was doing would help to brighten their day. Lately though, people have been getting bored with the same old, still they continue to stare at their phones. The creator of this game picked up on this and invented an app where people can use their phones to not only walk about aimlessly waiting for their friends to post say, a funny cat video, but to also now capture imaginary creatures. Maybe you’ve never heard of Pokemon Go, but I guarantee you have seen it being used. It is similar to a Zombie movie where hordes of the undead walk slowly in no apparent direction. Zigging and zagging, suddenly making 180 degree turns with no concern for who or what might be in front of them. In other words, the next time you watch an episode of The Walking Dead, picture all of the zombies holding and looking at smartphones; this is what Pokemon Go is. The only

advantage the Zombies on the TV show have is that they are actually looking where they are going. These people aren’t confused, they are working hard to rid the streets of tiny, furry monsters that only they can see and gather valuable points that can be used for‌well‌nothing at all. If you happen to come across a Pokemon Go player, it is best to stay out of their way since their sense of reality has been compromised and they can no longer be responsible for their actions. (It is fun to watch them for a minute or two as their eyes will look up from their phone for a moment to see if that cute little imaginary goblin is actually there. Even if that doesn’t happen, chances are good they will walk into a tree or pothole which in turn makes for a great YouTube video to share with your friends while taking a break from capturing imaginary monsters.) Even though I personally think the whole Pokemon Go thing really serves no purpose but to help the chiropractic business as people’s necks become more out of alignment from never looking up, there are practical purposes for this technology which makes things exist where they really don’t. I am not talking about obvious applications like, for example, where one could take a museum tour and have a famous person like, say, James Earl Jones, appear on their phones in front of each artifact and tell of its historical significance, I’m thinking on a different level. Parents could load an app onto their kids phones where a virtual image of them would randomly pop up on the screen to check in from time to time. This alone might make the umbilical cord connection to

the smartphone less appealing, though I have my doubts. I thought that those running for office could use an app like this to their advantage. A virtual image of a candidate appearing on phones of people who are frustrated while waiting for long periods of time, letting the user know that, if elected, this will never happen anymore, could be useful in getting a few votes. (The Department of Motor Vehicles, the security line at the airport and my dentist’s office all come to mind.) It could also be used as an anger reliever during moments where a bit of rage may begin to boil. For instance, that person whose has decided their car is more important than everyone else’s and takes up two parking spaces in a busy parking lot. You can take out your phone, point it at the car, press a button and have the Dalai Lama appear to convince you that there really is no need to get angry, it’s all small stuff. (For those of you who were waiting for a more explosive solution, well that just gives me more reason to think we need this app.) I’m sure that similar apps are being developed in the wake of the silly success of the Pokemon Go thing. Let’s hope it gets a bit more positive and useful. I can understand the attraction of the Pokemon Go game to those 16 and under, I was there once, I get it. But if you are older than twenty-one and you play the game more than one minute a day, well, we need to talk. There really is other stuff that needs to be done. Congressional Black Corruption If Black Lives Matter, then why have entrenched members of the Congressional Black Caucus spent more time enriching themby Michelle Malkin selves than Syndicated Columnist taking care of their neglected constituents? Too many social justice protesters are busy throwing shade, rocks, bottles, concrete blocks and vicious death threats at police officers of all colors trying to keep the peace. Instead of moaning about “#WhitePrivilege,” I invite radical racial identity warriors to join me in taking on the black political elites selling out their people. Help expose the most crooked members of the caucus of Congressional Black Corruption: Corrine Brown: This 12-term Democrat from Florida received a 24-count federal indictment last week while her Congressional Black Caucus colleagues tried to drown out the news with diversionary gun-control theatrics. Brown and her chief of staff are charged with creating a fraudulent education charity to collect over $800,000 in donations from major corporations and philanthropies for their own private slush fund between 2012 and early 2016. The director of the hoax group, dubbed One Door for Education, Inc., pleaded guilty last year to fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors say two relatives of Brown and her chief of staff steered tens of thousands of dollars in cash deposits to their accounts. The charitable contributions paid for lavish galas, NFL tickets, concert luxury box

seats, golf tournaments and apparently Brown’s tax bills. Despite raising nearly a million bucks, Brown’s “charity” only issued two measly educational scholarships for minority students. So while shamelessly claiming this week to be a martyr akin to the murdered Dallas police officers and victims of the Orlando jihad, Brown is embroiled in a sordid scandal that exploited black children’s lives to line her own pockets. You can’t blame righty or whitey this time, Crooked Corrine. On-shoring Unemployment Remember the last presidential election cycle when the Left wailed about the scourge of “offshoring” jobs? How times change. by Ken Gorrell Northfield, NH. In June of 2012, the uber-Progressive news site ThinkProgress trumpeted a Washington Post story “that Bain Capital, the private equity firm Mitt Romney headed for 15 years, invested extensively in companies that moved jobs overseas to low-wage countries like China. The practice contradicts the rhetoric of candidate Romney, who since announcing his presidential ambitions, has criticized government policies that have led to jobs, particularly those in manufacturing, moving offshore.” Never mind that lowering production costs is something businesses always strive to do, or that businesses with lower cost structures are often good investments for people seeking solid returns on their retirement funds. The Left blamed Romney for enabling the move of “American” jobs to other countries. Four years later, the Left is criticizing Donald Trump for his hard-line on illegal immigration, dismissing his claims that illegals are taking jobs away from Americans. They are even calling

for the Obama Administration to end its very tepid deportation actions aimed at employers of illegal aliens. Progressives don’t want American jobs going to foreign lands, but seem fine with foreign workers taking jobs from Americans here at home. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs report for June was heralded as good news for the economy. But what did that report show? The government reported that 287,000 jobs were added last month, but digging deeper we see that the gain predominantly benefited foreign-born workers. (The data does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants.) The number of native-born Americans with jobs actually declined by 179,000 in June. The fact is that foreign-born workers currently have a lower unemployment rate and a higher labor force participation rate than native-born workers. It seems that through our immigration policies we are on-shoring unemployment for the native born. The BLS report also showed that more than half of the new jobs were in lower-wage sectors such as leisure and hospitality, health care, social services, and information services. Not surprisingly, these jobs are attractive to immigrants, both legal and illegal, who generally have lower skills. But many of these are also the “entrylevel” jobs young Americans seek, placing them in competition with

immigrants. And it gets worse. The widely-reported unemployment rate of 4.9% represents “Total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force”. That number doesn’t include Americans who have given up looking

for full-time employment. If we count them, the unemployment rate nearly doubles, to 9.6%. This is the BLS’s so-called “U-6” number, defined as “Total unemployed, plus all persons marginally at-

The War On Cops Even in this age of runaway emotions, there are still some people who want to know the facts. Nowhere are facts more important, or more lacking, by Thomas Sowell than in what Syndicated Columnist has been aptly called “The War on Cops,” the title of a devastating new book by Heather Mac Donald. Few, if any, of the most fashionable notions about the police, minorities and the criminal justice system can withstand an examination of hard facts. Yet those fashionable notions continue to dominate discussions in the media, in politics and in academia. But Ms. Mac Donald’s book of documented facts demolishes many fashionable notions. Consider one of the big talking points of politicians and others who claim that the harsher penalties for people selling crack cocaine than for people selling powder cocaine show racism, since crack cocaine is more likely to be used by blacks. The cold fact, however, is that black political and community leaders, back in the 1980s, spearheaded the drive for more severe legal penalties against those who sold crack cocaine. Black Congressman Charlie Rangel of Harlem was just one of those black leaders who urged these more severe penalties. So did the New York Times, the promoter of many crusades on the left. Fast forward to the present, when both black leaders and the New York Times are blaming white racism for the more severe penalties for selling crack cocaine. If you want to see what they were saying back in the 1980s, check pages 154-159 of “The War on Cops.”

When the political winds change, politicians change. But that does not change the facts about what they said and did before. As in her previous book, “Are Cops Racist?” Heather Mac Donald put hard facts front and center -and those facts devastate many a fashionable notion in the media, in politics and in academia. One of the most popular arguments used in many different contexts is to show that blacks have been disproportionately represented among people stopped by police, arrested or imprisoned, as well as disproportionately represented among people turned down for mortgage loans or for other benefits. Although many people regard these “disparate impact” statistics as evidence, or virtually proof, of racial discrimination, suppose that I should tell you that black basketball players are penalized by NBA referees out of all proportion to the 13 percent that blacks are in the American population. “Wait a minute!” you might respond. “Blacks are more than just 13 percent of the players in the NBA.” Black basketball players are several times more numerous than 13 percent of all NBA players. This is especially so among the star players, who are more likely to be on the floor, rather than sitting on the bench. And players on the floor most are the ones most likely to get penalized. The difference between the percentage of blacks in the general population and the percentage of blacks in the particular activity being discussed is the key to the fraudulent use of “disparate impact” statistics in many other contexts. Hillary Clinton, for example, decried a “disgrace of a criminaljustice system that incarcerates so See Sowell on 37

Now that summer is upon us, driving around the region can be a challenge as we share the roadways with brightly clad cyclists. But imagine trying to avoid one carrying a chair in one hand while steering with the other, shouldering a long roll of carpet or with groceries bulging

lights and actual lanes, denoted by their red pavement, dedicated specifically for bicycles. Though as a motorist, trying to take a right turn can be a white knuckle experience; since in some places it might mean crossing

from saddle bags and even hanging from their handle bars or wobbling slightly from the weight of a case of beer or an additional passenger who is balanced precariously on their rear book rack. These and many more such sights are the source of daily amusement for tourists visiting the Netherlands (Holland). However, riding bicycles for most Dutch is not for entertainment nor a seasonal or recreational activity, but rather it is a year-round (and in some cases only) mode of transportation. However, for foreign drivers in the Netherlands it can be a nightmare negotiating through swarms of cyclists going about their business down narrow village streets. Fortunately, in most areas there are traffic

three or more lanes of various modes of traffic (tram tracks, bicycle, pedestrian, and horse paths). In any case, drivers and pedestrians alike must keep in mind that bicycles have priority or it could be costly. There was once a woman, for instance, who was fined the equivalent of $500 for walking into a bicycle path and impeding the progress of an 80-year-old cyclist. So, obviously age is not a deterrent to operate a bike nor are there many valid excuses to avoid riding in the Netherlands. Even though it rains a lot, keeping dry isn’t a problem with umbrellas, rain suits/poncho drapes, and mounted window shields (lightweight versions of those found on some motorcycles). I spend a good portion of my summer guiding fishing clients from all over the country for striped bass from kayaks. There is something about catching fish from so close to the water line that seems to keeps people coming back, especially when those fish are migratory visitors whose appearance is as synonymous with summer as beaches and ice cream. Whether they come because they want to experience the thrill of the Nantucket sleigh ride, or they just want to try something new, the result is almost always the same. They catch fish and I make new friends. It can be said that kayak fishing doesn’t afford you the same access to as great a number of striped bass as fishing in a boat. Sure, when the fishing in one spot slows, boaters can fire up the motor and speed off to

SAN FRANCISCO SPORTS “We saw stretched out ahead of us the fabulous white city of San Francisco on her eleven mystic hills

San Francisco sports bars have plenty of photos of the DiMaggio brothers, Dom, Joe, and Vince. Before advancing to the big leagues with Boston, New York, and Pittsburgh respectively, they all played for the Pacific Coast League’s San Francisco Seals.

Weirs Times sports columnist Mike Moffett reunited with old friend Frank Mallicoat for a WTVU-FOX Channel 2 Sunday Morning Show interview with Fahim Fazli, Moffett’s coauthor of “FAHIM SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back. Mallicoat was once the lead sports reporter for Manchester’s WMUR-TV Channel 9. with the blue Pacific and its advancing wall of potato-patch fog beyond, and smoke and goldenness in the late afternoon of time. ― Jack Kerouac, “On the Road Unlike Kerouac—a fellow New Englander who first saw the Golden Gate from his car—my first look at San Francisco was from the air, a view I reprised last week when I again flew into this unique American metropolis. On our glide path into San Francisco a passenger pointed out Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the new home of the 49ers and the site of Super Bowl L this past February. I looked to the horizon, past Santa Clara, towards San Jose, and thought of the Earth-

quakes—perhaps the most storied American professional soccer team. And then it occurred to me that, incongruously, the NHL’s San Jose Sharks were recent Stanley Cup finalists. Mark Twain supposedly claimed that “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. Northern California indeed features a unique summer climate. The temperature hovered around 60 degrees, with strong winds making it feel much colder. Twain would have been better advised to spend a summer at Lake Winnipesaukee, with its balmy 80 degree July temperatures, while saving San Francisco for January. San Francisco Giant centerfielder Willie Mays was a victim of contrary winds

at Candlestick Park. The Hall-of-Famer hit 660 career home runs, but may well have surpassed Babe Ruth’s 714 had he played in AT&T Park, which opened in 2000. Obviously Barry Bonds had no trouble hitting homers at the newer venue. Signs remain directing people to Candlestick Park, but that historic edifice was demolished last year. It’s a pity, given all the sports history made by the Giants, 49ers, and others—like the Beatles, who performed their final outdoor concert there in 1966. Winners of the World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014, the Giants remain a premier MLB franchise— built in large part by their general manager, Concord’s Brian Sabean. And then there are the Golden State Warriors. A local delightedly pointed out their recent signing of basketball superstar Kevin Durant. As the Warriors just set the single season NBA victory record, some feel the Warriors are already a lock for next year’s World Championship. But I pointed out that the 196869 Lakers were similarly projected as unbeatable after they acquired Wilt Chamberlain to team up with L.A. superstars Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. That unbeatable team fell See moffett on 42

ing to prevent World War three. I think of President Reagan, who would never go into the Oval Office unless he was wearing a suit and tie. Then I think of President Clinton, treating the Oval Office like a bordello. To me, he showed no respect to the office of the presidency. He showed no respect

to the American people, to whom Clinton worked for. The job of President of the United States, to Clinton, was nothing more than checking a box for personal achievement. He became President for his ego. Now we may very well get President Hillary Clinton. As Secretary of State, she showed little respect to the Obama administration,

and the American people, by not using government servers for official E-mail. I wonder how much respect she will show to the American People if she becomes President, I’m not expecting very much. Anthony Ford Farmington, NH.

fish they catch, and so far all of them have lost count. There’s little more satisfying than when a client needs to stop fishing and rest their arms because they have caught so many fish. I know the feeling, so I know how great it is. I enjoy the unpredictability of striped bass kayak fishing. It keeps me on my toes as a fishing guide, and fends off monotony. Some days we catch tons of fish, some days we catch really big fish, and occasion-

Here are some things you can depend on in the Lakes Region: sunshine (somewhere), clean air, clean water, good food (depending on the cook), taxes (especially on lakefront property), and among many other things, an abundance of good beer to try. One other thing we can depend on is great tasting brews from Squam Brewing. Squam Brewing is located in Holderness, NH. Owner John Glidden started Squam in 2010 and knows the personal satisfaction of solely producing a fine product. Being a 3 barrel nano brewery, John has full control of his recipes and is known for his superior consistency. Each of his 13 different beer styles match the season perfectly. They are sold in 22 oz “bomber bottles with gorgeous labels painted by relative, Deb Samia. You can find out more at their website: www.squambrewing.com. America pale ale styles are quite commonplace, especially in New England. They are known for the easy drinkability, smoothness, malty character and tame alcohol content. Covered Bridge exemplifies this style and takes it a bit further. This coppery golden-hued, bottle conditioned liquid goodness has a marvelously white and creamy head and an above average malt note in the nose as you approach the glass rim. You will pick up slight bready notes, well balanced with very light hop character so you are able to concentrate on

Ask The Builder Weep Holes Under Patio Door Protect From Rot And Mold by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: I live in a brick townhouse. In the back there is a patio door leading to a concrete deck. The patio door sits on top of some brick work. I’m trying to make sure the patio door is all sealed up, keeping out any and all moisture. I’ve noticed what seem to be round weep holes along the very bottom of the brick work. I would like to plug them up with some mortar to keep the moisture level down. Will this do any harm? What purpose do the weep holes serve? --Todd J., Newport News, Va. DEAR TODD: Whatever you do, do not fill those weep holes. They’re an integral part of the drainage system to keep water from building up behind the brick. This water, if allowed to contact any untreated lumber, will cause serious wood rot, mold and eventually structural problems with your home. Allow me to explain the dynamics of brick walls, brick veneer and rain, and you’ll be able to do a fantastic job of protecting everything behind the brick. Brick walls leak water. They have always leaked

Builders and masons from hundreds of years ago knew this and developed a set of best practices to ensure their brick buildings did not fall apart. Sadly, lots of this information for years was handed down by word of mouth. To add insult to injury, not all brick masons today are required to learn all the past history about brick construction. If they had a better understanding of what’s going on, they’d be able to do a better job of

preventing water infiltration. Most water enters brick walls along the interface where the mortar touches the brick. You may not see the ultra-fine line or pathway, but it exists. On row-lock brick like you see under your door threshold the problem is even more severe because the mortar joints are facing the sky. Rainfall has no problems getting into a brick wall at these locations. Think about what hapSee builder on 37

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr.

Not so long ago, but long before there was a city of Laconia there was a Province of Laconia. The history books don’t emphasize that fact, perhaps understandably so when one reads the confusing accounts of the earliest immigrants to what is now New Hampshire. When the New World was indeed new to the English adventurers and speculators there were, perhaps, a few thousand, maybe five thousand, native Americans living in what is now New Hampshire. These natives were often referred to as savages by the foreigners who soon claimed the land for themselves and expected to find an abundance of gold, silver and precious gem stones that would make them wealthy investors. But trying to figure out who owned what land, when and where, is a difficult task, particularly when it appears that the grantors of New England land were themselves in a state of confusion, sometimes seemingly granting the same portion of land to different people. The granting of land in what had been named New England by Prince Charles had its beginning in 1622 when a group of Englishmen, called The Plymouth Council of New England, having been established in Plymouth,

England “…for the planting, ruling, ordering, and governing of New England in America” by authority of the King of England , issued grants including a large one to two London men consisting of a parcel of land between the Merrimac and Sagadahock (Kennebec) Rivers. Those men were Sir Ferdinando Gorges (Sir because he had been knighted) and Captain John Mason, a former merchant and a

naval captain. The grant was named the Province of Maine, but was also called Laconia. The proprietors sent settlers over from England to take possession of the land on the Piscataqua River which resulted in settlements called Little Harbor, Strawberry Bank (Portsmouth) and Northam (Dover) being built. Part of the agreement of the grant was that Gorges See smith on 20

Why don’t they count? Despite claims to the contrary, foreign-born workers -- many of whom are in our country illegally -- are displacing Americans who want to work. In 2008, federal agents raided Howard Industries in Mississippi, detaining nearly 600 illegal

aliens who had been working there. The next morning local citizens lined up for the opportunity to work at the company. In 2012, Howard Industries paid a $2.5 million fine and created a $1.3 million fund to settle claims from as many as 5,000 non-Hispanic job applicants (many of them black) who had been denied employment in favor of illegals. Just last month, in the “latest effort by ICE to arrest and remove convicted criminal aliens, the Feds detained 331 men, all with

prior convictions including “burglary, domestic violence, sex crimes, and driving while under the influence. Naturally, groups supporting illegal aliens expressed outrage. One man complained that “ICE arrested the son-in-law of one of our members, and the only offense on his record is a 10-yearold conviction for working with a made-up Social Security Number. One assumes that this illegal was still working with a fake SSN, or making a living through some other nefari-

ous means. Illegal aliens acting illegally, taking jobs from Americans -- with the approval and support of the Left. At the same time, Leftists are also pushing for significant increases in the minimum wage. We know what that means: Companies will accelerate the ongoing replacement of low-skilled workers with capital equipment. From ordering kiosks and automated cooking equipment in fast-food restaurants, to computerized warehousing systems, to the amaz-

ing AGROBOT automated strawberry harvester, entry-level and low-skilled workers will be replaced by machines or otherwise priced out of jobs. Advocating for increased immigration, actively advancing the interests of illegal aliens, and raising the price of labor: The Left seems Hell-bent on hurting the American worker. Keep Your Cardinals by Steve White Contributing Writer

The cardinal is relatively new to this area of New England. Prior to the popularity of backyard bird feeding, the northern most boundary of this brilliant red bird was the Connecticut and Rhode Island regions. As more homeowners enjoyed this hobby of feeding wild birds in the last two decades, attracting the cardinal has almost become an obsession. The chase was on. Just how do you keep this majestic bird in your area year round? Attracting cardinals to your backyard is not a difficult task if you have the right habitat to start with. Unfortunately, most backyards have eliminated the environment necessary for maintaining nesting cardinals. Cardinals are basically ground birds. They enjoy the comfort and safety that natural cover provides. Brambles, briar patches, and thickets are standard cardinal territory. You may witness cardinals singing from the tallest branches of trees, but for nesting purposes, this species prefers the lower levels of your area. Many people choose not to have these natural plantings in their backyard and may have a difficult, if not impossible, task of attracting northern cardinals. Nesting birds are feeding birds. The cardinal is very aggressive in defending its territory from other birds. They are extremely loyal as well. It’s one of the few species of wild birds that allow the offspring to stay for the first year after hatch-

ing. It is not uncommon to witness large flocks of cardinals during the winter months as they forage for food. Large, airy bushes, like the rhododendrons, serve well as cardinal habitat. You can create your own cardinal friendly environment using a simple brush pile. Choose a suitable area at the edge of your property and commence the process of gathering large tree branches that have fallen to the ground in neighboring woods. Place these loose branches on top of one another until you have a rudimentary brush pile approximately 6 feet wide at the bottom and 4-5 feet tall. Do not compress this new site and leave plenty of airy, open areas for the cardinals to fly into. Viola, instant cardinal habitat! Cardinals prefer bird feeders that imitate their natural feeding area, the ground. These birds are not clingers, like chickadees or finches. Perches are very difficult for large birds to use for feeding purposes. Traditional style tube feeders are not cardinal friendly. Consider adding a tray on the bottom so that cardinals will feel comfortable during feeding. Properly designed hoppers can be the most optimized solution to attract feeding cardinals to your yard. Open tray feeders are another solution. Sunflower and safflower seeds are the two favorite ingredients in the eastern region of the United States for attracting northern cardinals. Of course, water is also a key element to serve in order to maintain your population of cardinal families. Enjoy your birds!! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve

As ambitious as they were , Sir Gorges and Captain Mason are said to have profited nothing by their investments in The Province of Laconia except for the land that was left for others to fight over in the property disputes that were to come, and the value of their contributions to America seems to have mixed conclusions among historians. The two grant receivers did send people over to seek the riches they expected Maine and New Hampshire to produce , but in doing so they may have neglected to take full advantage of the resources that were available to them in their desire for silver and gold. A few towns were established and the churches that were considered a necessity in each one provided some stability and cooperation among the residents, but Barstow observed that, in violation of the grant given to them, “Gorges and Mason established no government.” And the name Laconia seems to have been f o r go t t e n u n t i l a c i t y brought it back into our vocabulary! and you can travel back in time to the 1920’s and World War II. And just another few words about the book and author that introduced me to Soho. James R. Benn’s next Billy Boyle World War II mystery will be published by Soho in September. You’ve got plenty of time to catch up on Billy’s war before The Blue Madonna is published.

Cara Black is a writer who makes you feel like your feet are on the cobblestoned streets of Paris following Aimée to the clubs and cafes and courtyards of Paris. Black also does an exceptional job of weaving World War II conflicts and secrets into the late 1990’s Paris. So don’t forget a stop at Soho Press. Gary Corby’s Athenian Mysteries do not overlook the “actors” listed at the beginning, the timeline or the end notes. They will help you keep track of the details and of course any detective, armchair or otherwise, knows how important that is and they are good fun, too. “You think the past goes away?”- Murder on the Quai You may not be packed and set to visit Paris this summer, but Cara Black can take you there and impart the ambiance and energy of the City of Light with her excellent Aimée Leduc detective series. Cara Black’s Murder on the Quai, a prequel to the series, is everything old fans and new readers could wish for. For those of us who have been following Aimée’s cases and life since Murder in the Marais (1999) Murder on the Quai tells the story of Aimée’s first case and enhances our

understanding of Aimée’s history and motivation. If you are just meeting Aimée you are bound to be captivated by Aimée’s charm, wit and courage. In this prelude to the series Aimée’s father, Jean-Claude, head of the Leduc Detective Agency, has been mysteriously called out of town, so Aimée takes over the search for a woman named Suzy who was somehow involve with Elise Peltier’s father before he was murdered and dumped under Pont des Invalides. Aimée is hampered a bit by the fact that she is supposed to be preparing for pre-med exams, that she only has a fake detective’s license, and that the closer she gets to the truth the closer she comes to peril. In addition to wanting to prove herself to her father Aimée also hopes to find out something about her mother who disappeared when Aimée was eight years old.

The photo on top left shows a dark woodgrain kitchen that was refaced with a light cherry woodgrain, plus new doors and drawer fronts to brighten up kitchen. The same kitchen could have been refaced with any woodgrain or solid color you see in the photo of sample doors. Refacing your cabinets is less than HALF THE PRICE of replacing them, SAVING YOU BIG MONEY.

and Parcel islands which reportedly hold underwater mineral resources. The Philippines who brought the case to the Hague sees its sovereignty impinged upon by Beijing’s standoffs in the disputed Scarborough Shoal. Since the ruling the Chinese have landed two commercial aircraft, an Airbus 319 and a 737, on recently constructed airfields on Mischief Reef and Subi islet. China’s militarization is widespread throughout the region; creating the facts through land reclamation in places like Fiery Cross Reef which now has a 10,000 foot runway. Structures evoking a James Bond movie have sprouted from the azure waters which bristle with satellite dishes, heliports, and runways on previously uninhabited islets. In May, a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed a freedom of navigation mission within 12 miles of Fiery Cross reef. Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan are all affected. Interestingly the Republic of China on Taiwan holds the largest of the Spratly group, Taiping island, on which it maintains a small Coast Guard and research facility. The South China Sea holds not only the presumed untapped mineral rights and exclusive fishing areas but as importantly remains the sea lane conduit for both East Asia’s export trade as well as its petroleum jugular vein for energy imports. Significantly the South China Sea remains the sea lane of communication for fifty percent of the world’s shipping; commerce for Japan, Korea, Taiwan, South East Asia, and naturally China. Thus, the People’s Republic of China gains immeasurable geopolitical clout by direct or indirect control of these vital waters. While Washington takes no formal position on the sovereignty debate, it stresses disputes should be settled peacefully. Traditionally, the United States has argued for freedom of navigation in these international waters. The

U.S. urged the parties to consider the ruling “final and legally binding.” Nonetheless, Beijing’s belligerent nationalism views many adjacent areas to the Mainland as “historically” part of China. Much like Mussolini’s claims of the Mediterranean being his Mare Nostrum, a doctrine based on historical Roman control throughout the region, here too there’s the selective use of history to establish ownership. The PRC can opt out of the UN Convention of Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and therefore not be bound by the recent ruling. More menacingly, Beijing may establish a Air Defense Identification Zone ( ADIZ) over these disputed waters. So beyond the complex case of overlapping claims, can there be multinational cooperation? Shared Resources. Defuse the issue through diplomacy. The UNCLOS convention allows for a 200 mile exclusive economic zone around each genuine island, not rocks or reefs. Naturally, states wish to maximize their geographic advantage but this results in overlapping claims. Beijing should work with the Association of South East Asian Nations, ASEAN, to reach settlements with the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia over resources. Open Sailing. The U.S. position has favored the region as international waters free for the flow of unhindered maritime commerce. Freedom of navigation remains the key. Enhanced U.S. Navy presence in the region insures deterrence against Beijing’s geopolitical expansion. Preventive Diplomacy. The South China Sea poses a classic case for preventive diplomacy. The risks of confrontation are growing. It’s time to defuse. John J. rules. Maxine Waters: This 13term Beltway swamp queen from California and past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus walked away with a slap on the wrist from the toothless House Ethics Committee in 2012 after being charged with multiple ethics violations related to her meddling in minority-owned OneUnited Bank. The banks’ executives donated $12,500 to Mad Maxine’s congressional campaigns. Her husband, Sidney Williams, was an investor in one of the banks that merged into OneUnited. As stockholders, they profited handsomely from their relationship with the bank. And vice versa. After Waters’ office personally intervened and lobbied the Treasury Department in 2008, the financial institution received $12 million in federal TARP bailout money -- despite another government agency concluding that the bank operated “without effective underwriting standards” and engaged “in speculative investment practices.” Top bank executive Kevin Cohee squandered money on a company-financed Porsche and a Santa Monica, California, beachfront

mansion. After the federal bailout of Fannie/Freddie, OneUnited’s stock in the government-sponsored enterprises plunged to a value estimated at less than $5 million. Only through Waters’ intervention was OneUnited able to secure an emergency meeting with the Treasury and its thenSecretary Henry Paulson. Waters’ government cronyism earned her a “Most Corrupt member of Congress” designation from the left-wing Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Then there’s Alcee Hastings, the 12-term Florida corruptocrat impeached while a federal judge in 1989 for making false statements and producing false documents in a 1983 criminal trial accusing him of seeking a $150,000 bribe. He went on to win a seat in Congress in 1992 and used his position to enrich his various lady friends, including paying one girlfriendturned-congressional deputy district director more than half a million dollars in salary and another he calls a “staff assistant” to accompany on his endless junkets abroad. Those three are just the start. There’s Texas’ Sheila Jackson Lee and the Medi-

care fraud racket involving a local hospital in her district; Greg Meeks and his $400,000 earmark for a fake health clinic in New York City and Caribbean resort jaunts underwritten by convicted financier Allen Stanford; and Wisconsin’s Gwen Moore and her lucrative friends and family. And, of course, the ethics violations, shady business deals and tax troubles from New York’s Charlie Rangel deserve their own encyclopedia. My message for BLM? Put down your black power fists and weapons. Give the “#BlueLivesMurder” and “Fry ‘em up like bacon” chants a rest. Aim your outrage at self-serving black leaders and their abject failure to improve black people’s lives. Michelle Malkin is a senior editor at Conservative Review. The Great Waters Music Festival will welcome The Glenn Miller Orchestra to Wolfeboro when they appear at The Kingswood Arts Center Friday, July 22nd at 7:30 pm. Great Waters will be honoring all World War II veterans with two free tickets to this performance. Glenn Miller disappeared on Dec. 15, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity. In September 1942, just prior to going into the army, he had disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. Not long before he enlisted, he nosed-out Tommy Dorsey, the “Best Sweet Band in the Downbeat poll. His recordings of In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade and Tuxedo Junction were all

major hit records. Miller played to sell out crowds, and his music constantly dominated the airways. On Dec. 15, Miller took off in an ancient, single engine plane to precede his band to Paris. The weather was foreboding. Not very confident, he said to the pilot, “Maybe we ought to call this off? The flight officer ribbed him about his fear of flying, “Do you want to live forever? Now, over 60 years since the public first embraced the successful Miller Sound, both the legend and the music live on. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought after big band in the world today for both concert and dance engagements. The Miller Estate formed the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 following strong popular demand aroused as a result of the successful motion picture, “The Glenn Miller Story, starring James Stewart and June Allyson. The band has

been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year around the globe to millions of fans. The performance is sponsored by Fidelity Investments, Sugar Hill Retirement Community and Maxfield Real Estate. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Thanks to all who have contributed to this organization, it is able to provide high quality musical performances at reasonable prices. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, by calling 603-569-7710, or online at www.greatwaters. org. Ticket prices for this performance are $55, $40, $30 and $20.

Tim Sample stands out as probably the best known Maine humorist among a field of many and he brings his “Down East Humor” to Anderson Hall in Wolfeboro on Saturday, July 30th, in a fund-raising event for the Wright Museum of World War II. For decades, Sample has been delivering jokes about living in Maine to enthralled audiences all over New England and it is a rare lakes region appearance for the humorist Describing Tim Sample’s work as “humor” rather than “comedy” is, according to fellow Mainer and bestselling novelist Stephen King an important distinction: “He’s a funny guy, you’ll get no argument from me on that score, but no more a comedian than Mark Twain or Artemis Ward. Like, them, Timmy (that’s what I always call him the way folks from up our way are apt to call their friends “dearie”) isn’t acting; he’s just talking in a

There have not been four heats of the Hambletonian since. Cookman, who purchased the property in 2002 with the history in mind and wanting to make sure it kept on going as a horse farm, had invited Lawrence to bring her Riding Academy to the farm in 2005. (Julie had, coincidentally, worked at the farm when she was sixteen.) “We had done some breeding for awhile, says Jim Cookman, Jr. “then we began to focus on riding students and boarding and the business grew. “I started the Academy after I was offered the opportunity to teach riding from Bill and Lynn Harltey’s farm in Meredith in 1995, said Lawrence who was at that time managing Running Horse Farm in Sandwich. “We went to Vermont and picked out some cool horses for giving lessons and they let me share their backyard with their family as I ran See academy on 35

The site work has already been done and the hope is that construction can start in 2017 for a winter opening. “It has been a long term goal to have a first class indoor facility, “said Cookman. “With nationwide events like the Mounted Cowboys and others the new facility would really bring us to a new level.” On July 31st, all are invited to 26 Young Road in Gilford to celebrate twenty years of the Lakes

It’s also a great opportunity to check out this facility even if you haven’t yet done so. “I’ve invited just about everyone I know who has been a part of the Academy over the years,” said Lawrence. “People are going to bring pictures and share stories about the twenty years and we also hope to see some new faces and introduce them to what we have to offer.” To find out more about The Lakes Region Riding Academy or to find out what is available for Summer Camp this year, visit their website at lakesregionridingacademy.net Of course you are invited to their July 31st celebration from 11 to 4 or just come by anytime to say hi.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, July 21, 2016 builder from 15

pens in a storm when rain is lashing against the side of a brick wall. The pressure of the wind is forcing the water into the brick wall through the cracks like you’d pound a nail into a piece of wood. Each successive rain drop that hits the wall pushes against the water that just hit seconds ago. This, in combination with the wind pressure, allows water to stream into the wall. This water needs to be captured and redirected so it doesn’t come in contact with any of the wood framing in a brick veneer house. Years ago, in solid masonry buildings, the masons and builders dealt with this water in a different way. They used harder brick to construct the outer face of the walls but the brick used for the inner second or third course was a softer brick that readily absorbed water. You can usually spot these bricks because they’re an orange color and not a deep earthtone color. These soft bricks would absorb the water from the

storm and the next day they’d send the water back out to the air via capillary attraction and vapor pressure. As the sun beat on the wall and the breeze blew over it after the storm, the water stored inside the inner brick would come out faster than rats abandoning a sinking ship. In modern brick veneer construction, it’s imperative this water is captured by flashings and waterproof membranes and then redirected to the exterior of the brick wall. Parts of this system are the round weep holes you see at the bottom of your brick. All sorts of products are available now that channel the water back to the outside of a brick wall, but it’s impossible to retrofit them into an existing brick veneer wall. Your best bet to protect your home is to apply a clear silane siloxane water repellent that has enough solids in it to help plug the tiny cracks that allows water to enter at the brick/ mortar interface. When spraying these products on a brick wall

it really helps to have a helper who’s operating a backpack leaf blower. This person directs the air flow to the area being sprayed with the sealer. The high wind pressure created by the blower forces the water repellent deep into the brick wall to help create a strong barrier against water infiltration. If you’re building a new home with brick veneer, then you’ll want to read many of the technical notes from the Brick Institute of America. These are easy to understand and have great illustrations. They show all the places where you need very important flashings to collect the water. One of the places flashings are a must is under row-lock brick as you have in the photo you sent. The sad thing is many of the brick houses I’ve inspected lack this flashing. It’s also important to make sure the pathway from behind the wall to the front of the weep holes is wide open. All too often mortar falls behind the back of the brick veneer and makes it very hard

for water to easily enter the weep holes. There are products and methods to ensure this doesn’t happen, but many bricklayers and builders don’t use the products -- and then problems happen as the house is subjected to pounding rain.

On the benefits side, there was instant condemnation of mortgage lenders when statistics showed blacks being turned down for prime mortgage loans in 2000 at twice the rate that whites were turned down. While strolling the streets of San Francisco Weirs Times sports columnist Mike Moffett came across two strange looking contraptions. A local hippie referred to them as Love Bugs--- apparently old-fashioned gas-powered vehicles of some sort! dered if the Bay Area had surpassed New England as the nation’s top sports region. But as it wasn’t until the late 1950s that bigtime sports came to San Francisco, historic Boston must remain the nation’s top sports city—though maybe we could rethink that designation if San Francisco sports continue to flourish for a few more decades. Not that San Francisco can’t claim some history. Sports bars feature plenty of photos of the DiMaggio brothers, who played early on with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. But Joe will also be remembered as a New York Yankee, and Dom as a member of the Boston Red Sox. Sorry, about that, San Francisco. San Francisco is a friendly place, but somewhat alien to your traditional Granite Stater. Riding the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit system) meant listening to a cacophony of foreign tongues. Still it was heartening to see so many diverse peoples getting along. And I was happy that folks with purple, green, and pink hair had a safe place to be themselves. Could I live in San Francisco, if circumstances required? Sure. It’s a special place with wonderful sports teams—and more. But if such a move ever manifested itself, I’m sure I’d end up writing wistfully of New England. Maybe I’d even write a song, for which—with apologies to Tony Bennett—I already have a name. “I Left My Heart‌in Lake Winnipesaukee!â€?

Sports Quiz What San Francisco Giant pitcher won the first National League Cy Young Award in 1967? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports standouts born on July 21 include NBA player, coach, and commentator Doug Collins (1951) and—the pride of San Jose—women’s soccer star Brandi Chastain (1968). Sportsquote “They’ll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run. – San Francisco Giant pitcher Gaylord Perry, circa 1965. On July 20, 1969, a few hours after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, Perry hit his first and only home run. Sportsquiz Answer Giant pitcher Mike McCormick won the first National League Cy Young Award in 1967 with a record of 22-10. From 1956-66, only one Cy Young Award was presented. Beginning in 1967, a Cy Young Award was given to the top pitcher in each league. Boston’s Jim Lonborg was the ’67 American League winner. A Stanford grad, Lonborg was 22-9 that year. Michael Moffett is a Professor of Sports Management for Plymouth State University and NHTI-Concord. He recently co-authored the critically-acclaimed and award-winning “FAHIM SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back (with the Marines)—which is available through Amazon. com. Barnstormers’ Best-Selling Show “Urinetown - The Musical Returns It’s funny. It’s original. It’s The Barnstormers’ best-selling show ever, and it’s on stage August 20-29. “Urinetown - The Musical is a gleeful parody of greed and musicals - ranging from “West Side Story to “The Threepenny Opera. The action is set in a dystopian future where a 20-year drought forces a ban on private toilets. The public pay-as-you-go facilities are run by the malevolent Urine Good Company (UGC ) and its evil boss, a Bond-like villain who owns a white bunny instead of a cat. A lowly UGC worker falls in love with the boss’s beautiful daughter and leads the revolt in bringing down UGC in this rollicking David and Goliath tale that took home four Tony Awards. “Don’t be fooled by the title. It’s a clean show, and this blockbuster musical will have you tapping your toes and bring you to your feet cheering for the hero as he takes on corporate greed, said Artistic Director Bob Shea. “It’s a riotous romp that skewers everything from musicals to consumer (over)consumption to
