Community Dinner In Meredith

The Huckins Farm in New Hampton showing some of the original buildings built by Captain Peter Hanaford after he bought the property in 1784.

Saving The Farm For PerpetuityThe Huckins Farm by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

A few years ago I was visiting a former parishioner and farmer in southwestern New York State, and, in the course of our conversation, he excitingly expressed his knowledge of the Huckins Farm in New

Hampshire that raised championship Guernsey cows. I was somewhat astonished to hear this man, who years before had been a member of my church’s youth group in New York, telling me about my New Hampton neighbor’s farm. It was the cows that drew my friend’s attention to the Huckins

Farm and it is the cows and what they produce that bring people to the farm today, and, if farm owner Matty Huckins has her say, it will be the cows, or at least, agricultural pursuits, that continue to keep the Huckins Farm alive. Since 1906 it has been the Huckins Farm, but originally it was the See HUCKINS on 28

To The Editor: I recently happened upon an article about a new Political PAC in Belknap County. Citizens for Belknap is a group of Leftists pretending to care about “Republicans”. Lest you be misinformed, Brian Beihl who is the leader of this PAC, has connections to Open Democracy. which is a FAR Left group. To the informed eye, the globalist Open Democracy works hard on Socialist planks that true Conservatives battle every day. They are all about growth of government while dismantling individual rights in the process. Quoted from the article, “Brian Beihl, a seasoned campaign consultant and organizer who is overseeing the undertaking, said he has been pleased by the initial response to the effort from voters. In particular, he pointed to the number of longtime Republicans disaffected by the pretense of extremists and radicals disguising themselves as Republicans.” Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Pretending to be ANY part of the REPUBLICAN political stratosphere is an outright lie. As someone who has connections with Open Democracy, Beihl is hiding the real agenda of Citizens of Belknap - to take down the truly Conservative delegation of Belknap County - but NOT for the reasons they are putting out there. This propaganda is outra-

geous. Do not believe anything Citizens for Belknap puts forth. Let everyone know this is NOT a Republican group. Because this group could not care less about hard-working taxpayers. They just want more power to grow government in Belknap County. Buyer BEWARE! Jane Cormier, Concord, NH.

Disneyland To The Editor: As a fifty-year resident of Laconia, N.H., I was shocked to read of the unsolvable bathroom issue at Laconia High School where all bathrooms have been locked and students must stand in line at the nurse’s station to relieve themselves. I channeled Jonathan Swift of Gulliver Travels fame, the ultimate satirist, to obtain his thoughts. Mr. Swift dictated the following to me. The Disney Company has taken Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse transgender. Mickey is now a girl, and Minnie Mouse is a boy. Pluto now thinks he is a cat. Donald and Daisy Duck are in the throes of deciding whether they are L, G, B , T or Q. T AP reported that Donald told Daisy that he thinks Disneyland has gone “Quackers” so they must be Qs. The UPI reports that, just like Laconia High School , Disneyland has been thunderstruck by a Bathroom Brouhaha. Disney’s President reports the issue is so complicated that the Board of Directors has been unable to

resolve the issue for six months. The Fauci Flu provided some relief , so to speak, because of a pandemic closure that closed the Park and then reduced crowds. With recent crowd surges, the brilliant minds of Disney decided to lock all bathrooms in the Magic Kingdom except the bathroom at Cinderella’s Castle. This unique solution led to an exciting, unexpected benefit ( consequence) : Wait time for rides has been reduced from one hour to five minutes except for the Bathroom line at Cinderella’s Castle. Disney is covering up the length of lines and the wait time. As everyone knows imaginations run wild in the Magic Kingdom. Drudge Reports has an exclusive that the confounded Disney Board has retained world-renown mediums to consult Walt Disney to solve the “Bathroom Brouhaha” enigma ! Unfortunately, both Walt and Roy have been retained by the Heavenly Bodies to plan and erect a Galaxy Wonderland and Tour! Walt is so out of touch he texted he thought Joe Biden could solve the Bathroom Brouhaha and save Disney’s plummeting stock value from Chapter 11. Good Luck Disney! Charles Bradley Laconia, NH.

— OFF THE SHELF — Horseplay At Slough House too. I hadn’t had this much fun since the first time I read Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe books. (To devour an entire series, one book after the other, is reader heaven.) What if, for some strange reason, Bad Actors was the one entry in the series that let me down? But staring at it sitting unopened on my desk was intolerable. Good book or bad I had to know what was happening with the slow horses. Was Catherine Standish soothing the various personalities? Was Jackson Lamb still nasty? What about River Cartwright? Would he man up, assuming that he was still breathing? Was Roddy Ho still oblivious? Was Shirley Dander going to get clean? Were Lech Wicinski and Louisa Guy going to die of boredom? And what about Ashley Khan, the newest member? How See MONTAGUE on 33

I heard about Mick Herron’s Slough House spy thrillers some years back, but I didn’t read one until this spring. Recently retired and intending to indulge myself a bit I checked the Libby library app to see if Herron’s first Slough House book, Slow Horses, was available. It wasn’t, but I got lucky and got the loan after only a six week hold. About twenty pages into the book I knew that an eBook loaner would not do. I needed hard copy, I needed to own it, so I bought Slow Horses along with the rest of the series to save time later. Slow Horses was just that good. The remaining Slough House novels and the three novelettes didn’t change my opinion. Mick Herron is an extraordinary writer, and the characters, plots and shenanigans are terrific. I approached Herron’s latest Slough House book, Bad Actors, with r N e w of trepidae S h opaO usmidgin t o r e ! It was the last r g e r Stion. one I would read until Slough House #9 is published. I wanted to savor it, love it, roll it around in my head and tell my friends about it so they would read the Slough House series,

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Out Of Excuses Last year I wrote about how the “Covid Excuse” was a wonderful thing. Since March of 2020, till about the middle of 2021, by Brendan Smith whenever I did Weirs Times Editor something like cut in front of line at someone in the supermarket, take up two spaces in the parking lot or blow off an invitation to a party of one kind or another, all I had to do was use the magic phrase “Because of Covid” and no one would question my actions. In fact, many folks expressed their sympathy. It didn’t matter that I didn’t actually have Covid, and I never actually claimed I did, I just blamed it for whatever it was I wanted to get away with and no one dared question me lest they find themselves facing comments and, worse, stares from those heavily masked individuals who might who might be nearby. “Hey, he said he had to leave his shopping cart in an empty parking space because of Covid, leave him alone,” their muffled voices would cry out close to tears while giving me a thumbs up. At first I felt guilty, feeling as though I was taking unfair advantage of the situation; and I was. But after a few weeks of unfettered reckless living, I started to get really used to it. It was around September of 2021 when I once again went to leave my shopping cart carelessly in the an empty parking spot at a well-known Lakes Region shopping center that someone yelled out. “Yo Pal, wanna move your cart?” A well defined, maskless voice called out. Covid,” I said as I shrugged my shoulders. “That don’t fly no more, move it.”

At that moment I knew the game was over. I had stretched my luck way too thin. There were no muffled voices to support me. The excuse was no good anymore and it wasn’t fooling many any longer. I sheepishly meandered over to the cart I had left abandoned, not daring look at the face of my accuser again, and gently placed it into the corral. It has been nearly a year since I learned that hard lesson and I have never tried to use the Covid excuse again; not even after I actually caught the thing. I felt lousy for a couple of days, but decided it was better to live with the agony then to actually use the excuse for real. The man who cried “Covid” I guess would be the lesson of this tale. So, I thought all was fine. In fact over the last few months I haven’t really thought much about those weeks and months of using the excuse. Then last week, as I was recuperating at home from a medical procedure and planning my next run for governor for the Flatlander Party, I was shocked to see one of my possible opponents from one of the other political parties, being interviewed on TV about his campaign when he said: “Unlike one of my likely opponents, I have never used, nor will I ever use the Covid excuse to take advantage of any situation.” Did he mean me? Was there another candidate running who had used the Covid excuse themselves (or whatever their pronoun might be)? It seemed unlikely. At first I was angry. What would this do to my campaign. Am I sunk before I even really begin? But then I lightened up. This was just what I needed; an actual scandal that would put my name on the news and in the papers. In all the years I have run for the big corner office with the

comfy chair, I have never found a way to break through and get some real publicity – good, bad or otherwise. I needed to find out if it was me they (or whatever) were talking about me. I called the campaign office of the accusing candidate and, disguising my voice, I tried to pry out some info on who they were talking about. They were quick to let me know the name of their primary opponent. It wasn’t me after all. I decided to try to fuel the fire anyway. “Oh, I thought it might be Brendan Smith,” I said in a highpitched voice that I hoped would not sound too gender specific. “Who’s that?” “The guy running for governor for the Flatlander Party,” I said. “Sorry, never heard of him. Would you like to make a donation? Or maybe you’d like to walk around with flyers, knock on doors and bother people when they are just about to sit down to dinner?” “No thanks,” I said and hung up. I was disappointed. Even if I let out my secret of abusing the Covid excuse myself, it would get no traction as a scandal since that other candidate would be absorbing all of that bad publicity to use to his advantage. Hopefully, I can come up with a different scandal to help me get noticed. I’ll keep you posted. Of course, if I don’t win, which is highly probable, I might just go ahead and use the new excuse to take advantage of things. “Sorry, Monkeypox.”

Why Some Of Us Can’t Dine In Peace Fifteen years ago, when I still lived in the D.C. swamp, I took my elementary schooldaughter and toddler son out for one of our regular weekend breakfasts at IHOP. But we couldn’t be left alone to enjoy our meal. As my kids dug into their funny-face pancakes, a fuming-faced liberal marched to our booth and started ranting about my by Michelle Malkin anti-open-borders commentaries on Fox News. The incident occurred not long after Syndicated Columnist Geraldo Rivera told a Boston Globe reporter that I was the “most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life” and that “it’s good she’s in D.C. and I’m in New York” because “I’d spit on her if I saw her.” Fifteen years later, I’m blacklisted by the “fair and balanced” network, while fork-tongued cable news reptile Geraldo Rivera remains a heavily promoted Fox News contributor who regularly attacks everyone else (including his former friend Donald Trump) for inciting violence. File under “chutzpah.” Fifteen years later, organized mobs in the nation’s capital are targeting Supreme Court justices in their homes. Fifteen years later, the goons of ShutDownDC, leading instigators of “direct action” (translation: domestic terrorism) against the far left’s political enemies, have now offered bounties of up to $200 on Twitter to stalk and harass Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts. In a Twitter post that brazenly violates the social media giant’s own rules against targeted harassment and incitements to violence, ShutDownDC called on D.C.-area service industry workers to expose the whereabouts of the conservative justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. The call to arms came after Kavanaugh was hounded out of Morton’s steakhouse in D.C. In a rare display of business defiance of the mob, Morton’s responded in a statement that Kavanaugh and other patrons “were unduly harassed by unruly protestors” and that politics “should not trample ... the right to congregate and eat dinner.” Or to eat an IHOP breakfast with children! One outlet characterized the latest intimidation campaign against the SCOTUS judges as a “troubling escalation.” But I know from both professional and up-close-and-personal experience that all this ugliness is a continuation of years and years of abuse of, and violence against, conservative public figures in both public and private spaces. See, for example, my 2006 encyclopedia of leftSee MALKIN on 36

Woke Academic Gobbledygook Makes You Rich And Famous This week, a professor went viral during congressional testimony regarding the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overruling Roe v. Wade. During her testimony, professor Khiara Bridges of by Ben Shapiro Berkeley Law School Syndicated Columnist refused to acknowledge any value at all in unborn children, instead stating, “I think that the person with the capacity for pregnancy has value and they should have the ability to control what happens.” This prompted Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., to ask, “You’ve referred to people with a capacity for pregnancy. Would that be women?” Bridges immediately responded, “Many cis women have the capacity for pregnancy. Many cis women do not have the capacity for pregnancy. There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy as well as nonbinary people who are capable of pregnancy.” Hawley asked incredulously, “Your view, the core of this right is about what?” To which Bridges shot back, “I want to recognize that your line of questioning is transphobic, and it opens up trans people to violence.” She then blamed Hawley for the high suicidal ideation rate of those who identify as transgender, and lectured him, “We have a good time in my class. You should join.” Hawley was of course correct that only women can have babies; women who believe they are men are still women. And the notion that suicidal ideation rates among LGBT people are the result predominantly of societal bigotry is completely evidence-free; suicidal ideation rates among LGBT people remain massively higher than among cisgender heterosexual people in San Francisco just as they would in Alabama. The question that should trouble us,

then, isn’t whether men have babies. They don’t. The question is why our most prestigious academic institutions now churn out privileged pseudo-intellectuals who spout utter nonsense at the drop of the hat, and do it with self-assured sententiousness. The answer lies in the incentive structure in higher education. Our higher education system is designed to benefit claims of victimhood rooted in intersectional identity politics. That is the only way to explain just why Bridges, one of the most educationally privileged members of American society, makes a career complaining about the systemic evils of the United States. It takes enormous gall and equal ignorance to claim that bigotry lies behind the reality of sexual dichotomy; it takes just as much gall and ignorance to claim that a country that has afforded you the opportunity to achieve a degree from Spelman College, a JD from Columbia Law School, a Ph.D. from Columbia in anthropology, and a career in classical ballet is somehow a country shot through with systemic racism. And yet that is precisely what Bridges does for a living. Her study specializes in “race, class, reproductive rights, and the intersection of the three.” Author of “Critical Race Theory: A Primer” and a self-described “critical race theorist,” Bridges believes in the “rejection of legal conventions” and advocates in favor of the ideas that “racism is a normal feature of American society (and not a deviation from an otherwise fair and just status quo)” and that “traditional liberal understandings of the problem of racism and how racism will be defeated” ought to be rejected. This, too, is nonsense. But it is nonsense cherished by the elite institutions that churn out supposed academics like Bridges. Our system of academia is irrevocably See SHAPIRO on 35

Dictator Envy

by John Stossel

Syndicated Columnist

Some Western leaders envy dictators’ powers. President Donald Trump said, when North Korea’s Kim Jongun speaks, “his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the

same.” President Barack Obama told reporters it would be so much easier to be the president of China. Canada’s foolish Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said he admires China because “their basic dicta-

torship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime.” These are stupid and dangerous fantasies. Some people have a “utopian dream that if only someone at the top could just point us in a certain direction, everything would go well,” says historian Johan Norberg in my new video. “People like a strong leader,” I point out. “A strong leader of their own imagination,” Norberg responds. One example he gives: “Thomas Friedman of The New York Times famously said that he wanted to

be China for a day to solve global warming.” If Friedman were dictator, he could solve global warming? I doubt it. Yes, China has built lots of wind turbines. “But those wind turbines don’t produce more power!” Norberg points out. “Around 30% of them are not even connected to the grid. And why is that? Because they didn’t build them to make money. They built them because they wanted to meet a political goal.” So China has useless wind turbines and, for power, builds more coal plants. Another example: American me-

dia said we should look to China to contain COVID-19. NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Dr. Anthony Fauci, “How uncomfortable is it that perhaps China’s authoritarian ways did prevent this?” Fauci replies that China “prevented a broader spread.” But China’s “’Zero COVID’ policy turned into a nightmare,” says Norberg. China locked people into homes. One city even killed COVID patients’ pets. China is still the one country that will not acknowledge that we may have to learn to live with COVID. “That’s what you get with dictaSee STOSSEL on 35

Russia Tightens Energy Vice On Europe This was a crisis waiting to happen. Europe’s unfolding energy emergency was long in coming but at the same time widely by John J. Metzler e n c o u r a g e d b y Syndicated Columnist Western European states all too eager to embrace Russia’s cheap and available natural gas delivered to the European Union’s doorstep by a spiderweb of pipelines some dating from the Soviet era. In the short term the deal worked well. That was then. This is now. But since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Europe’s admirably tough political pushback to Vladimir Putin’s aggression, there’s now

a growing nervousness throughout Europe concerning the availability of Russian energy supplies which power much of Europe’s industries and heat the continent’s homes. French President Emmanuel Macron accused Moscow of using energy deliveries to the West as “a weapon of war.” Speaking on the French TV network, TF1, he warned, “We will need do without Russian gas completely.” Currently France receives less than twenty percent of its total natural gas imports from Russia. Macron reiterated that France would invest more in nuclear energy, which currently provides around 70 percent of the country’s electricity needs. France fortunately is in a relatively good position facing energy

supplies. Germany, however the Continent’s economic powerhouse, faces dire consequences from Russian natural gas shortages. So do countries as varied as the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. For example the Czech Republic is more than 90 per cent dependent on Russian natural gas, and nearly fifty percent for Russian oil supplies. It’s Summer now so nobody wants to think about it but gas shortages for industry mean slowdowns, shutdowns and job layoffs. Natural gas cutbacks to municipalities translate into chilly homes come Autumn. And Winter then approaches. No gas is flowing though the key Nordstream pipeline, due to “technical and maintenance” issues.

Robert Habeck, Germany’s vice Chancellor warns of a “political nightmare.” In a move that goes against the principles of his environmentally-focused Green Party, the country will allow reopening of some coal fired power stations. Electric power cuts loom nonetheless. Now in a riveting reality check, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz concedes that his country must reopen some 16 dormant fossil fuel power plants and extend the operating permission for 11 more. He said, “The fact that we now have to temporarily use some power plants that we have already taken out of operation because of Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine, is bitter.” Not in power for even a year, See METZLER on 35

Mount Clough Tunnel Brook Trail & A Bushwhack We changed our plans at the last minute because we both felt like going someplace where it was highly unlikely we’d run into anyone. Adam is checking off peaks on the New Hampshire Highest Hundred list. I am often game to visit these peaks again especially when I can take a new-to-me route to the summit and it’s fun to look for treasure. Believe it or not Mount Moosilauke has a quiet side and its closest neighbor to the west is Mount Clough, elevation 3561 feet (ranked 96th on the NHHH list). The Tunnel Brook Trail stretches between Glencliff and Benton and through “the tunnel”--the deep narrow notch between Moosilauke and Clough. We began our hike at the south trailhead located about a half mile up Long Pond Road from High Street in Glencliff. No other cars were parked there. Since it has been so dry we knew the water crossings would be easy rock hops. The first mile is pleasant; the trail follows an old road and crosses Jeffers Brook, with its beautiful cascades. Then there are a couple more brook crossings before passing by a dam and a small pond that is the Glencliff See PATENAUDE on 30

Village and celebrate its historical resources accomplished a planning goal to slow down traffic on Route 25 and offer education to residents and visitors about Moultonborough’s rich history.” Cristina Ashjian, Chair of the Heritage Commission, accepted the award with Bruce Woodruff, former Town Planner, who had nominated the project. Woodruff gave full credit to Ashjian for the banner project, noting how enhancing Moultonborough Village’s appeal was key to the community’s comprehensive Village Vision planning exercise of 2014-2015, and recognizing the Main Street Banners as a first action step in the Village Vision Plan. In her comments, Ashjian thanked Heritage Commission

members and other attendees who had participated in planning efforts focused on the revitalization of Moultonborough Village, including the Plan NH Charrette of 2018 and the UNH First Impressions downtown assessment of 2019. She also recognized collaborator Eliza Tappé of Doublewhirler Design, who designed both the banners and the accompanying Main Street Banners brochure. Successfully fulfilling both Planning and Historic Preservation goals, the Main Street Banners and informational brochure have met with praise from residents, visitors and the business community. Intended to welcome visitors, and to physically and visually define the historic Main Street and its gateways, the banners also identify landmark buildings and celebrate existing natural, cultural and historical resources in the Village area. This is the second Lakes Region Planning Commission award to recognize the important role and activities of the Moultonborough Heritage Commission with regard to community planning and economic development. In 2019, Cristina Ashjian received a Community Service Award, given annually to individuals who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to their community and/or to the economy of the Lakes Region.

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

for office. By all measurements your President couldn’t even come close to being considered a “moderate,” nor could he even approach being a great unifier of your nation as he promised. He has consistently demonstrated a commitment to a radical agenda for your Country that has, until now, been the rally cry of only a small percentage of the American people. This agenda ignores the historical values and commitments of your Country, seeks to impose with an iron fist, those of the radical fringe populace and consistently violates the laws he has promised to defend. Things such as border security, parental responsibility for imparting values to children, sexual practices and relationships with respect to marriage, gender definitions, censorship of those who may disagree or challenge the policies and positions of leadership, racial divisions, indiscriminately categorizing all white people as being “white supremacists,” explosion of violence with affirmation by politicians, attacks on Supreme Court justices with cheerleading by politicians, and so very much more. You have been duped and if you would open your eyes, it is having devastating consequences on your nation in every respect. But I would like to address this situation from another perspective. Most of your country declares themselves as religious. Most still declare themselves as

Christian. Even if those making this declaration are casual in their beliefs, one constant is that they believe in God, in me. Have you ever considered what I think about the values of the hostile takeover being imposed on your country and the practices that have ensued? Have you ever considered that I cannot bless anything that is contrary to my will and my character? Have you ever considered that because I love you, I must withdraw my blessings and remove my protective hand when you choose to reject my will? Have you ever considered that if you continue to believe and practice what you are currently embracing that you will experience my judgements? Not only is the radical agenda that is being foisted upon your country contrary to the promises of your President, out of step with the majority of citizens, radically opposite of your historical values and practices, they are against my will and design for life. Every nation which has embraced these values and practices, began a death march that would inevitably steal away their life, which only I can give. Before Moses died, I asked him to address my Chosen People as they were about to enter the Promised Land. I urge you to read my words through Moses in Deuteronomy 32 in my book, the Bible. They were about to enter a time of unbounded blessings because of

Letters From God

QUESTION: What Is Happening In America? I Don’t Recognize Our Country Any Longer. The reason you can’t recognize your country is because it has become unrecognizable. You are no longer the Country you used to be; with the long-standing values you have held since its inception. It is a result of a political agenda, militantly imposed by your leaders. You have been the victims of what your business environment would call a “hostile takeover.” In your last election your President assured you that he was a moderate on the political spectrum. He assured you as well that he was going to unite your country in ways it had yet seen. He assured you as well that he would “defend and protect the constitution” of your country. In light of his leadership agenda, he has demonstrated empirically the adage that, “where you stand depends and where you sit.” In other words, it is often difficult to believe that the person in office is the same person who campaigned for office. When they sit in the seat of the office they have won, their agenda appears to be diametrically opposed to the promises made when they ran

their trust in me and their obedience to me and my will. I asked Moses, however, to prophetically describe that once they prospered in the land, they would abandon me and disobey me. As a result, I would withdraw my blessings and turn against them because of their shameful behavior. I told them they would lose everything as a result, including being carried into captivity at the hands of their enemies. As Moses’ words concluded I, left them with a parting thought. I said, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you - they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” (Deuteronomy 32:4647). My words and my will are not idle, take or leave, words. They are your life. I gave you life and I alone can sustain your life, individually and as a nation. My people didn’t heed my words and suffered greatly. Will you? I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

The Girls Who Stepped Out Of Line —Lecture & Book Signing At Wright Museum—

On Tuesday, July 26th, the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro will welcome Retired U.S. Army Major General Mari K. Eder. This is the tenth program of the Wright Museum’s 2022 Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney Education Series. The Girls Who Stepped Out of Line are the heroes of the Greatest Generation that you hardly ever hear about. These women who did extraordinary things didn’t expect thanks and shied away from medals and recognition. Despite their amazing accomplishments, they’ve gone

mostly unheralded and unrewarded. No longer. These are the women of World War II who served, fought, struggled, and made things happen—in and out of uniform. Major General Mari K. Eder wrote this book because she knew their stories needed to be told—and the sooner the better. For theirs is a legacy destined to embolden generations of women to come. Mari K. Eder is a retired U.S. Army Major General, a renowned speaker and author, and a thought leader on strategic communication and leadership. General Eder is

Doors open at 6pm and the program begins at 7pm on Tuesday, July 26th at the Wright Museum’s DuQuoin Education Center, 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro. Admission is $5

Transgender Athletes

A new retail craft shop featuring hand made creations by Lakes Region crafters

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Okay. This week’s column is about reflecting as opposed to opining. The topic is transgender athletics. Probably not a subject for sports fans looking for stuff about the Red Sox, NASCAR, or Tom Brady’s upcoming 45th birthday celebration. But it’s a newsworthy subject which rates some sport-thoughts. The “transgender” issue relates to people whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond to their birth sex. The common expression “A man trapped in a woman’s body” (or vice versa) involves the transgendered. Why write this column? Because there are big issues and powerful debates about the appropriateness of people born male, with those XY sex chromosomes (the heterogametic sex) identifying and playing sports with people born female, with the XX sex chromosomes (the homogametic sex). Being neither geneticist, biologist, nor psychologist, I approach this issue with care—if not trepidation. USA TODAY’s Scooby Axson recently wrote about transgender swimmer Lia Thomas who won the 2022 NCAA Division One 500 freestyle national swimming champion-

Will Thomas (L) is now Lia Thomas. ship for the University of Pennsylvania. Thomas earlier spent three years swimming for the Penn men’s team before switching to the women’s team in 2021. “The biggest misconception, I think, is the reason I transitioned,” Lia stated to ABC News/ESPN. “I transitioned to be happy. To be true to myself.” NCAA rules require trans women athletes to take testosterone suppression therapy for one year before competing. Thomas reportedly was on that therapy for two years and he also denied transitioning to gain a competitive sports advantage. Presumably the NCAA has rules and guidelines re: documenting the suppression therapy. (One does wonder what office enforces these statutes and how.) Physiologist Dr. Michael Joyner of Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic studies human athletic

performance and explained that hormone therapy has limits concerning reversals. “Height’s not reversible, nor hand size nor foot size,” said Joyner, as reported by CBS News. “Some issues related to muscle mass, lung size, and other things are probably never going to revert completely, if at all.” The notion of male bodies with those XY chromosomes dominating female athletes with their XX chromosomes concerns many folks. Nancy Hogshead-Makar won three swimming gold medals at the 1984 L.A. Olympics. She told CBS that transgenders have unfair advantages and that their participation corrupts the competition. “They [transgenders] think that women should just move over as they say they’ll take the spots.” Meaning XY males taking the places of XX females.

“When Lia Thomas is in the finals it means another [real] woman doesn’t make the finals.” As a member of the N.H. House Education Committee I sat in on a bill hearing related to transgenders. Several dozen people testified. All but one of them were supportive of transgender parSee MOFFETT on 32

House wrens and American goldfinches have been my main source of avian entertainment this past week. Both of these birds nest, on average, later than most other songbirds. While birds such as phoebes and robins get started in March or April, house wrens and goldfinches start in late spring/ early summer. I hear the disjointed, but still rather cheerful, song of the house wren every time I walk out my door. The goldfinches are more quiet, but highly visible in their bright yellow plumage going back and forth to the nest site. Goldfinches feed their babies a vegetarian/seed diet so the early insect hatch that prompts so many other songbirds to nest is of no practical to goldfinches. Rather, they must wait until flowers to bloom and go to seed before raising their young. Their primary diet consists of milkweed, thistle and other “weeds.” House wrens start earlier but continue with additional broods deep into summer, even into August. My resident house wrens are still busy feeding young and being territorial, which has become expected of these lively birds.

Sprinkler + Drip Irrigation Landscape Lighting Landscaping Services

Bobolinks nest on the ground in large fields. House wrens will often build dummy nests to fool potential predators. Years ago, the first time I had put a bird house, I was excited because a house wren was filling the house with sticks. I couldn’t wait to watch the whole process and see the babies fledge. A week later, all activity ceased, and I was left with a bird house full of small sticks. Most other birds have finished their nesting and are either raising youngsters or starting to think about migration already. At least we have the goldfinches and house wrens to keep us entertained for a few more weeks. Speaking of nest times, I received an important question

from Sandy, who has a large field in Greenland (New Hampshire, not the huge island in North America.) She was thinking of mowing the field to control the invasive plants, but she worried about the bobolinks. When is a good time to mow large fields that have breeding bobolinks? A rule of thumb is the Fourth of July, but a few weeks beyond that is even better. It can be inconvenient and even costly to wait that long, but mowing the field earlier may destroy bobolink eggs or babies. Bobolinks are handsome grassland birds that need large fields to nest. They build their nests on the ground amidst the tall grasses. They are also rapidly de-

clining because large fields are often the future sites of condos or strip malls. The Bobolink Project is an organization that helps protect these birds. It offers compensation to farmers and other field owners who wait until later in the summer to cut their fields. More information may be found at www.bobolinkproject.com. Mary Anne wrote in a few times to keep me updated on the eastern phoebes nesting at her house. She watched the busy parents feed the growing youngsters every 10 seconds. One day, the young birds fledged, and the nest was empty. It’s always nice to hear success stories See BOSAK on 32

An abundance of yellowish-orange blossoms dotting the garden greenery force my thoughts toward zucchini and summer squash. I cannot say for certain it’s the thought of squash that makes my mouth water, but I can tell you that I have gained a greater affinity for squash than I had as a kid. Once I discovered treats and center plate stars like zucchini bread and muffins, stuffed squash, and grilled vegetables, sliced and diced ¨boiled green and gold¨ moved to the back burner. Seeing the mass of blossoms within literal feet of the back door makes me eager for the anticipated abundance soon to be gathered. It is literally the fruit of our labor coming to fruition. I know from experience not to count my chickens before they hatch. Having chickens has indeed taught me the meaning of this phrase. However, within a few days of seeing blossoms the first little green and yellow squash were taking shape. My son was watering the garden the other night so I asked if there were any squash ready for harvest? “No! They’re all too

small.” His reply was definitive. Emphatic. The following evening I came home from work and there, on the counter, was a zucchini nearly as long as my forearm. “Holy Cow! I thought you said they were all too small? What’s your version of big?” “It was hiding under the leaves.” “Well, any bigger than that and they’re only good for one thing… Zucchini Bread.” “That’s OK! That’s how I eat zucchini!” he See FEAST on 17

Grilled Zucchini And Summer Squash

Yield: 8 -10 side servings Time: 10 minutes Prep (Marinade from 30 minutes to two hours before cooking) Cooking Time: 10 minutes on preheated BBQ Grill(it was even better when allowed to chill for 6 hours.)

INGREDIENTS 2 Large Zucchini (8-12 inches ¼ to ½ Cup Grated Parmesan long) cut on the bias between ¼¨ Cheese (use your favorite) and ½¨ thick. Garnish (optional) 2 Large Yellow Summer Squash Fresh Basil (chopped) (8-12 inches long) cut on the bias Fresh Thyme between ¼¨ and ½¨ thick. Fresh Tarragon 1 Cup Light or House Italian dress- Fresh Cracked Pepper Corns ing (use your favorite) Preparation Instructions - Wash, cut ends off, and pat dry squash with a paper towel. - Cut squash on the bias into ¼ to ½ inch thick strips. (Larger than coins but smaller than the entire length of the squash.) - Put squash strips into a gallon zip seal bag, add the Italian dressing and Parmesan cheese, and seal the bag. - Using your hands, gently mix the ingredients by flexing your fingers on the outside of the bag, ensuring all squash is coated evenly. - Place the bag in the fridge or cooler until ready to cook. - To cook, place squash pieces on a hot grill and pour about half the marinade evenly over the pieces. Let pieces cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip with a spatula, pieces should have browning or char marks, pour remaining marinade over the pieces and let cook for 4 to 5 minutes. (Temps. differ from grill to grill so you may need to adjust cooking times for desired doneness.) - Place on a platter and serve hot with or without fresh herb garnish sprinkled over the top.

FEAST from 16 quipped. So what to do with that giant zucchini? Zucchini Bread? Well, as much as I do like Zucchini Bread that is another article for another day because this article is about Grilled Zucchini and Summer Squash. Truth be told, both of these squash fit the grill bill when they are on the larger side. Not too big, but when they are 8 to 11 inches long they tend to be of a larger diameter while still remaining tender, flavorful, and have more flesh than seed pulp, so the yield is still quite good. They are also easier to cut, having more of the vegetable to hold on to because you will cut these on an exaggerated bias (at an angle). You want these cuts to be thick enough so that they do not get limp, soggy, and translucent while spending time on the grill. If cut too thin they may fall through the grill when flipped and grilled veggies are just too good to sacrifice to the fire gods. Digging about for some historic perspective on Grilled Zucchini and Summer Squash I didn’t find much about the how and when it became popular, but I did find some interesting facts about these delectable squash and cooked veggies in general. For example, did you know that squash, along with a host of other veggies, originated in See FEAST on 18

OUT on the TOWN Great Food, Libations & Good Times!

FEAST from 18 brought Zucchini back here to North America in the early 1900’s. Another Fun Fact (I really hate that term), even though we call Zucchini and Summer Squash vegetables and predominantly cook them as such, these are, according to basic botany class, fruit, because technically they come from the blossom of the plant. I remember learning in a grade school science class that tomatoes were a fruit but never realized that the term “fruit” was applied to those edible yields that are a result of blossoms rather than the leaves, stems, shoots, roots, and other edible portions of plants. (The internet is a wonderful thing!) And, according to an article written by Katherine Wu in 2020 for Smithsonian Magazine, archeologists on a cave dig site in South Africa back in 2016 found evidence suggesting that humans were cooking veggies over fires (or in fires) over 170,000 years ago. They found charred encrusted rhizomes known to be of those associated with starchy foods such as potatoes and yams. Nothing like coming home to the cave after a hard day of hide and seek with mammoths and saber tooth tigers knowing that there’s spit roasted sloth and fire roasted baked potatoes on the menu. Experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of Scotland at the 47th NH Highland Games & Festival, Friday, September 16, through Sunday, September 18, at the Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln, NH. Presented by NHSCOT, this annual three-day celebration is one of the largest Scottish cultural events in the Northeast and showcases the traditions and history of Scotland through heavy athletics, cultural activities, music and entertainment, food and drink, and more. Competitive events are a key part of the Highland Games, providing a venue for athletes, dancers, and musicians to compare skills while

creating spectacular entertainment all weekend. Favorites include the Sheep Dog Trials and Heavy Athletics. On Friday, sheep dogs and sheep take center stage on the athletic field. The dogs, guided by their handlers using personalized whistle commands, are judged on their performance and efficiency to guide a pack of sheep through obstacles in the fastest time. On Saturday and Sunday, the athletes take over the field. Athletes from the United States, Canada, Iceland, Czech Republic and Scotland will take part in heavy athletic competitions such as the Caber Toss, Ham-

mer Throw, Weight Over Bar, and Stone Carry while fans cheer on these feats of strength. Music and dance are also a big part of the Games. Attendees can enjoy a variety of performances throughout the weekend, from Celticstyle rock bands like Albannach, Seven Nations, Syr, and Rebel Collective to the more traditional sounds of the harp and fiddle. This year will also see a return of massed bands, when more than two dozen pipe-anddrum bands gather to perform together. After watching the Highland Dance competitions attendees can head over to one of the dance Try-It classes and

learn some dance basics. Try-It classes include Ceilidh, Scottish Country and Highland dancing as well as other fan favorites like street curling, stone lifting, Gaelic, Mas-wrestling (also known as Swingle Tree), and drumming. Whether strolling and casually absorbing the culture and fare, taking part in the demonstrations or digging into the educational opportunities, there is truly something for all ages and energy levels. Free seminars provide a closer look at Scotland’s culture and history. Seminars cover a wide range of topics from genealogy to cooking with renowned ScotSee GAMES on 27

28 HUCKINS from 1 Hanaford Farm, and the hill on which it was built has long been known as Hanaford Hill; the dirt road leading to the buildings is Magoon Road, the short drive to the original farm buildings is Sunnyside, and some where along the line, since my childhood, I think, the road to get to all of the above has

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 21, 2022 — been named Dana Hill Road after Dr. Simeon Dana. Captain Peter Hanaford was the first owner of what is now the Huckins Farm. Captain Hanaford moved here from Canterbury, NH, where he sold a farm he had there to the Shakers and subsequently bought one-hundred acres of land in 1784

George Huckins, who bought the farm in 1906 with a bull. on the hill in New Hampton with a southern exposure to the sun for 300 “Spanish Milled dollars.” The Captain was born in Stratham, had learned the trade of a tailor, and had fought

Melvin Huckins, George’s son who operated the farm after his father in the Revolutionary War under the leadership of New Hampshire General John Stark. He afterwards purchased much additional land in New Hampton, much of which he later sold or gave to his descendants. This was the man who cleared the land and built the original buildings that is now operated as the Huckins farm. He became a leading town official in the young town, and when Rev.

It was from Hanaford’s land that the schoolhouse at the intersection of the Hollow Road that would serve District # 3, or the Marston District, and come to be called the Hanaford School, was built. The farm stayed in the Hanaford family for several generations with the offspring also spreading out to other

One of his sons, Peter, Jr., was killed by a lightning strike that also took the life of his wife and a young boarding student. The grandson of Captain Hanaford, Winthrop Young Hanaford, took over the farm after his grandfather’s death. He lived to the age of 92 and his son, Rockwood Hanaford, became owner of the farm. I don’t know if his name had anything to do with the landscape at the farm, but Rockwood died at a much earlier age than his father at 59 in the year 1906. Rockwood’s body was placed in the Hanaford Cemetery on the farm along side many of his relatives. The farm was then passed on to another family as it was sold to George Huckins, a native of the town who had been brought up on the Hollow Road. George had attended New Hampton Biblical and Literary Institution, graduating in

1900, but apparently was more interested in farming than he was a more bookish career. I had to cringe a little just a few years back when I heard George’s son, Edwin Huckins, lamenting the lack of farmers on Dana Hill Road, mentioning by name neighbors who weren’t farming, and hearing, “Bob Smith isn’t farming.” Ed had brought an abandoned farm back to life, just as Matty Huckins has done with the Huckins Farm after it had just a few years without milking cows. George Huckins married Bertha Richardson and they became the parents of six children, Walter, Ralph, Nelson, Evelyn, Melvin, and Edwin. George began raising dairy cows, first Milking Shorthorns, but soon switching to Guernseys, a breed that produced milk with higher butter fat, and it was butter that See HUCKINS on 29

run the farm. Both had to work at other full-time jobs, however, in order to keep the farm in operation. But Gordon’s health failed, and he could no longer care for the cows. He passed away in the fall of 2005. In a paper written in May of 2006, Matty’s son, Jeremy Lougee, wrote: “Today, the farm stands in memory of what it once was. The parlor is empty, as there are no cows remaining in the barn.” That statement is no longer true today, however. Matty Huck-

HUCKINS from 28 was produced to sell at market. I should point out that the New Hampshire hills at one time were heavily populated with sheep when wool production was high in the state. Butter was taken by means of horse and buggy or sleigh to Ashland to sell. With the passage of time the emphasis switched to milk as the main product, though, like other farms in those days, other farm products were raised or grown to provide the family with their food as well as providing some beef and other items to sell. Melvin was the son who remained on his father’s farm for the remainder of his life, running the farm for about thirty years, raising and milking mostly Holstein cattle. Melvin also drove a school bus, and I was one of his passengers for a couple years. Melvin and his wife, Virginia, became the parents of two children, Gordon and Shirley, and Gordon became the next of the Huckins family to manage the farm with the exposure to the southern sunlight.

Gordon turned to raising purebred Guernsey cows and developed one of the best herds in New Hampshire with the reputation of the farm reaching outside the state, as evidenced by my New York State’s friend’s interest in the New Hampton herd. On the open slabs of the slide with a good view down into the notch to the beaver ponds. PATENAUDE from 9 Home’s water supply. From here the trail feels more like an old path than a road from long ago. As we hiked Adam and I were chatting away and when I learned he had never

it would have been nicer to see a moose there. The trail continues along a chain of beaver ponds. It is really grown-in and we pushed through many spider webs and brush. These are the headwaters of Tunnel Brook; the brook runs north from the notch and there are old beaver dams. We were able to use one of the old dams as a bridge to reach the base of Mount Clough. We stood in the middle of the dam and looked up at the steep slides. I pulled out my compass and took a bearing and into the woods we went. For the next two hours we climbed up the steep mountainside. We crossed the slides, we pushed through thick trees, avoided diving

hiked this trail before I insisted that we go all the way to the narrow notch. There we would be able to see Mount Clough’s impressive slides and maybe we could bushwack up to them.

Is this the trail?! Yours truly on the Tunnel Brook Trail near the beaver ponds. We were lucky to keep our feet dry. When there is high water it can be a challenge to get through the notch. Soon we arrived at Mud Pond and over its mud and shallow waters we had a nice view up Moosilauke’s South Peak. It is a pretty spot and

board drop-offs and sat in the middle when we found some less scary places and we admired the view. Oh the views, the See PATENAUDE on 31

From the slopes of Mount Clough we enjoyed a rare view of Mount Moosilauke and the mountain’s South Peak.

Yours truly on the wooded summit of Mount Clough. My sandwich du jour was Peanut Butter and fresh blueberries. After hiking be sure to pick fresh blueberries, support your local farmers.

PATENAUDE from 30 higher we climbed the more we could see. Moosilauke right in front of us, North Kinsman peeked up and then we could see the Franconia Ridge and even the Percy’s. We found many open spots. We wound our way up through the tight trees. When we were nearly at the top of the south slide we noticed that many of the trees had been munched on by moose. Above the slides we avoided tangles of blow-downs by going around them and sticking to the now fern carpeted ground and trying to connect moose paths up the mountain. On the tree covered summit there are no views but I sat down in the ferns and started to eat my peanut butter & fresh blueberries sandwich. Adam kept following moose herd paths looking for treasure. A few weeks ago we tackled Mount Kancamagus. Long story short, I led us up a route that was a tangled mess and we got

A few weeks ago on trailless Mount Kancamagus Adam found this moose shed along a herd path we were following. On Mount Clough we didn’t find anything but moose poop! pretty beat up bushwhacking to its wooded summit. We didn’t see any sign of moose until we reached the top and then there were herd paths all over the place. I led us down a different way following more herd paths because we both

agreed it couldn’t possibly be worse. Adam hooted with joy and I turned around to see him waving a moose shed, a fine piece of treasure! In five more minutes I had found treasure too. When Adam gave up looking for sheds

he walked over to me and informed me that it looked like I was sitting in ferns and moose poop. Yah, the whole ground was covered with dried moose nuggets. On the way out we headed down Mount Clough’s southeast ridge where we were pleased to find that Mr. & Mrs. Moose had greatly made our bushwhacking efforts far more pleasant by following their herd paths down the ridge. It only took us half the time to get off Mount Clough and back to the Tunnel Brook Trail. We realized we were about to pop back out on the trail again when we saw two men cruising down the trail. We yelled Hello and they did too but in a few seconds they were out of sight. They were the only people we saw all day. We intersected the trail just south of Mud Pond so we had less than two miles to hike back to the car.. Walking down the trail felt effortless after our feat in the forest. Have Fun.

Olympic swimming silver medalist Allison Wagner (1977). Sports Quote “Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, and guts. That’s what little girls are made of. The heck with sugar and spice.” – American surfer Beth Hamilton, who had an arm bitten off by a shark Sports Quiz Answer The quickest NHL hat trick ever happened in 21 seconds in 1952. Bill Mosienko of the Chicago Black Hawks scored three goals in that span to set the record against the New York Rangers. BOSAK from 15 like that. One last baby bird story … Kevin wrote in to say he saw and photographed a sandhill crane family in Plainfield, Massachusetts. I never doubted Kevin’s account, but I did have to research whether sandhill cranes nested in New England. I have never seen nor heard of these large birds nesting in our area. Sure enough, sandhill cranes are increasing in the Northeast and there are a few nesting spots in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Kevin sent in a few photos, which may be found on my website www. birdsofnewengland. com under the “reader submitted photos” tab. What did you observe nesting in your yard this spring? Drop me a line and let me know. Chris Bosak may be reached at chrisbosak26@gmail.com or through his website www.birdsofnewengland.com

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 21, 2022 — MONTAGUE from 3 long would she last in Slough House? I opened the book, and the fun began. According to Collins Dictionary a “Bad Actor” is a mean, ill-tempered, troublemaking, or evil person. Both Regent’s Park, MI5 headquarters, and Jackson Lamb’s Slough House have plenty of those types to deal with in Bad Actors. Russians, thugs, government advisors and assorted other degenerates abound. MI5 First Desk Diana Taverner is suspected of hiding the missing Sophie de Greer, government advisor and “forecaster extraordinaire.” Former First Desk, Claude Whelan, is trying to find de Greer at the behest of Oliver Nash, holder of the purse strings as Chair of MI5’s Limitations Committee. Taverner has other problems, too. Anthony Sparrow, special advisor to the Prime Minister with a Napoleon Complex, has visions of grandeur which include a far less potent Regent’s Park and one without Diana Taverner at First Desk. It’s Jackson Lamb’s slow horses to the rescue however flawed and maladroit that rescue may be. Bad Actors is brilliant. In this eighth installment Herron deftly adds layers to his slow horses. His descriptions are eloquent and his dialog spot on. He weaves the intricate and exquisite plot like a medieval tapestry. If you get a slight feeling that you are losing a thread, never fear. Turn the page and everything comes together, perhaps bluntly and chaotically, as is the way in Slough House, but trust Herron. He won’t disappoint you.

MAILBOAT from 2 they say. A classic example is taking place now with the November election not far off. It is stunning to watch a political ad paid for by Senator Maggie Hassan with her looking into the camera espousing a bipartisan approach knowing that more than ninety five percent of the time she votes consistently with Senate President Chuck Schumer. It is stunning to watch Maggie Hassan say that women’s rights must be protected while showing no remorse for supporting abortions up to the ninth month. Many people across the country support the right of a woman to have an abortion but not in the ninth month when the baby is fully formed with a beating heart and the ability to react to pain. Maggie Hassan serves in a Senate that is evenly split and as a result she has been the deciding vote on a number of issues regarding millions of illegal immigrants walking into this country while not obeying the Law. Has Senator Hassan contacted the President regarding the banning

of fossil fuels ? The simple answer is NO while the hardworking people throughout New England are about to experience energy cost increases this winter that are going to be financially cripplig. Kenneth Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

Statesman Without A Clue

To The Editor: Russia and Ukraine have had friction for centuries and this episode is nothing new. What is new this time around is that a bumbling opportunist from far away is using this relationship to further his last remaining chance to salvage his political ambitions. It’s quite possible that his projection of weakness inadvertently brought this crisis to fruition in the first place. Joe Biden’s caretakers plan to resurrect his failed presidency via this event by ap-

pealing to his business interests in that very area, probably the only sincere motivation he’s capable of. His party associates making all of the important decisions themselves, will then parade him before the world claiming what a great statesman he is. I hope that this wannabee statesman never tries to claim greatness in mathematics also. He stated - and I quote - that “Vladimir Putin did this, not the democrats,”referring to food, gas prices and out of control inflation. Vlad commenced his Ukrainian venture Feb. 24,2022,and at that time the prior mentioned economic issues were in full swing already. Joseph Biden’s term began on Jan. 20,2022.1 suppose that Putin is also responsible for closing the Keystone pipeline and the Afghanistan debacle. Leonard Paquette Laconia, NH.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 21, 2022 — METZLER from 7 Scholz’s Social Democrat (SPD) coalition is particularly dependent on the environmentalist Green Party who has pursued a near theological commitment to Net Zero Goals and a crusade against Fossil fuels and nuclear power in general. For the record Germany’s electric production comes from 29% coal/lignite, 12% nuclear, 15% natural gas and 41% renewals. Fully 20% stems from wind power, with thousands of these ugly windmills marring the landscape throughout so much of Europe. At the same time, European countries have been sanctioning trade with Russia. The 27-member European Union has cut more than two-thirds of Russian oil imports to member states in a decisive move that will cut off a huge source of financing for Putin’s war machine. Seizing the high moral ground is admirable, but where will many countries get their oil? Obviously the Middle East but the Iran market beckons. But this didn’t happen overnight. Rather even in Soviet times Russia’s energy links to Europe were rooted in Moscow’s plans to have a reliable cash stream of steady business and hard currency flows while at the same time using this economic deal as powerful political blackmail over the countries it supplied. Back during the Reagan Administration there was a conscious effort by Washington to convince West Germany at the time, not to take the temptation of cheap and available Soviet energy. The Yamal pipeline

was already sending supplies from Siberia to Western European markets. Being in Germany at the time, I was shocked by the silly rationalizations being made by the captains of German industry, business, and the government who derided American opposition to Soviet energy supplies as “simplistic” and typical of a “cowboy mentality.” This was business, the all knowing experts comfortably nodded, “the Russians need us” and are “reliable commercial partners.” Today a network of Russian gas pipelines crisscrosses Eastern Europe leading to Germany thus creating a undue and intentional energy dependency for Europe’s largest economy. The newest of the links, the controversial Nordstream II, was put on hold earlier this year. The advertising backdrop of Russia’s Gazprom logo once emblazoned soccer stadiums across Europe. Today it’s often the Ukrainian flag. John J. STOSSEL from 7 tors,” says Norberg. “If government is big enough to give you anything, it’s big enough to take everything away from you.” At the beginning of the pandemic, America imitated China’s lockdowns. The mayor of Los Angeles threatened to shut off power to people who did not follow his orders. There was lots of political bickering about what our COVID rules should be. People don’t like the bickering, but Norberg calls it one of democracy’s strengths. “Because it means that we see different things and we bring different ideas to the table.” By contrast, “when we have one guy at the top, they begin to fall for their own propaganda.” That’s probably what led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “Putin thought that his own military was in excellent shape,” says Norberg. “Ukraine was seen as a joke of a country, a place of latte-drinking comedians.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a comedian before becoming president. Putin assumed Ukrainians “would just run away the moment they saw muscular Russian paratroopers,” says Norberg. “But it’s been a disaster for them.” In freer countries, Norberg points out, “journalists (and) peo-

ple online would’ve seen those problems and brought them forth.” But Putin’s advisers fear telling him the truth. It’s fun to watch one of his flunkies groveling. I understand why his adviser stammers. Pointing out a problem might get him jailed, if not killed. It’s why dictators get bad information. They make bad decisions because there’s no open dissent. “That’s what happens when you centralize,” says Norberg. “You lose individual initiative ... local knowledge. If you can mobilize everybody in one direction, sometimes they mobilize us all over the cliff.” I’m glad America has a government with limited powers. “Democracy cannot guarantee the best governance, but it can prevent the worst from happening,” concludes Norberg. “That is enough. That’s really what freedom and democracy is about. It doesn’t guarantee us heaven, but at least it makes us sure that we won’t end up in hell.” John Stossel is creator of Stossel TV and author of “Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media.” For other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit www.creators.com.

SHAPIRO from 6 broken. Academia was originally perceived as a place of meritbased higher learning, a place in which the best and brightest formulated the most important policies. Academia was the West’s intellectual oligarchy. But if the idea behind a meritbased academic elite used to rest in the actual merit of ideas and performance, that idea was left behind long ago. Now, the self-perpetuating academic elite is happy to maintain control by paying lip service to radicals like Bridges. All that matters, in true Foucault fashion, is power. That, presumably, is the reason why Bridges treats dissent as a form of violence -oligarchs usually do. Intellectual oligarchs are no different. And

the biggest casualty is truth. Ben Shapiro is a graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, host of “The Ben Shapiro Show,” and Editorin-Chief of DailyWire. com. He is a threetime New York Times bestselling author; his latest book is “The Authoritarian Moment: How The Left Weaponized America’s Institutions Against Dissent.” To find out more about Ben Shapiro and read features by other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 21, 2022 —

MALKIN from 6 wing loons, “Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild.” Naturally, militant abortion zealots cheered the Morton’s ambush and mocked the justices who are under siege -- even as Kavanaugh’s would-be assassin faces attempted murder charges after flying from California to the judge’s home in the D.C. area to kill him. On cue, the Biden administration defended and encouraged more such protest for abortion on demand. But ShutDownDC’s summer of staged rage isn’t about any sincerely held despair over the right to murder unborn babies, just as the attacks on Trump

officials at their homes and in restaurants in 2018 weren’t really, in the end, merely about Trump or America First populism or borders. Remember: ShutDownDC is a full-time, deep-pocketed front group for wealthy woke heiresses like Aileen Getty and Rory Kennedy who hop from “progressive” cause celebre to cause celebre. As I’ve reported previously, their compadres in the invasive Sunrise Movement are a parallel disruption outfit backed by the Sierra Club that agitated for the Green New Deal, Black Lives Matter and the Defund the Police movement before mobilizing to attack the private homes of Senate

Republicans who confirmed Trump’s judges. Even more alarming: the presence of ShutDownDC subversives embedded in federal government agencies including Takoma Park Mobilization, Alt U.S. National Park Service, Alt Ed, Alt FDA, Alt NOAA, Alt U.S. Forest Service, Alt EPA, and BadHombreLands National Park Service. Reminder: The Sierra Club (annual budget: $100 million; top donors: Michael Bloomberg, George Soros) provided five-figure initial seed grants to Sunrise’s educational arm, as well as Beltway office space. Other original funders of Sunrise: The Rockefeller Foundation and Wallace Global

Fund (which also contributed to the George Soros-subsidized Tides Center, Color of Change cancel culture guerilla warriors, and far-left legal policy groups Alliance for Justice and the Brennan Center for Justice). The Sunrise Movement’s cofounder, Evan Weber, is a former Occupy Wall Street organizer. Two others, Sara Blazevic and Varshini Prakash, are Green New Deal zealots and Sen. Bernie Sanders activists. Prakash serves as an advisory board member of Climate Power 2020 along with Soros-funded Center for American Progress head John Podesta, former Obama administration environmental

czar Carol Browner, former Obama administration science czar John Holdren, former Obama administration Secretary of State John Kerry, former Obama administration EPA head Gina McCarthy, and former Obama administration U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power. Some of us can’t dine in peace because our simple existence is a threat to the “liberal world order.” If you can’t be controlled, you must be de-personed. “Tolerance” is only for the intolerant. The rules of civility don’t apply to the self-righteous monsters sporting “empathy” bumper stickers on their cars and

“love is love” banners in the windows of their homes and businesses that will always be safe from pot-bangers, Molotov cocktail-hurlers and billionaire-funded dissent-crushers. Bon appetit, endstage America. Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@ protonmail.com.
