Bethlehem Opens What Is Truly A “Community” Pool by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

though it took more than a few hours, it took years and, from time to time it looked as though another obstacle would get in the way and the dream would never be fulfilled. But it was and today, a new public swimming pool, 100’x60’, brought back to life on the backs

It’s almost like a storyline from a 1940s movie, maybe even starring Jimmy Stewart. The kind of story that lives today only in memory. You know, the whole community gets together

and joins forces to do what many thought just couldn’t be done. Volunteers pitch in, and in movie time, tackle an unbelievable task within two hours and bring a smile to all involved, especially the children. Well, this did happen in the town of Bethlehem,

Cartoon Myth To The Editor: Has anyone seen this recent political cartoon? It posited the question: “Which is worse - A. GAZA using human shields or B. Israel hitting them. Let’s peruse the facts shall we? Israel accepted the Egyptian proposed cease fire while Hamas keeps firing away. Hamas deliberately aims rockets at civilians while Israel takes every precaution to avoid them. Israeli prime minister says, “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles. Apologists from America to Europe and the despicable UN’s Human Rights Council all blame Israeli occupation for this latest attack from Hamas. The idea of supporting terrorists is apparently lost on all these Israeli hating, far leftists. Remember less than ten years ago when Israel pulled up all it’s roots from GAZA and turned it all over to the Palestinians? Israel was hopeful of having a peaceful Palestinian neighbor and gave them 3,000 greenhouses with which to export fruit and flowers. The GAZA Palestinians proceeded to destroy the greenhouses and elected HAMAS. So rather than building an economy, schools and hospitals, they built underground tunnels and spent mil-

lions on rockets and other weapons. The Palestinians know that the Israeli “Iron Dome defense shield will destroy most of their missiles. Their goal is to produce photo ops of dead civilians with which to promote the endlessly false narrative of those “ruthless Israelis because they loathe Jewish people and have no desire to make peace. This cartoon is pure rubbish and perpetuates a terrible myth. Russ Wiles Tilton, NH.

Can A Nation? To The Editor: A friend sent me a chain letter concerning the phrase “one nation under God, in the Pledge of Allegiance and polling data showing that only 14 percent of Americans polled were against including “under God in the Pledge. Where as we are like minded spirits I am sympathetic to my friends longing for America to return to God. However, I feel that the matter of having the phrase under God in the Pledge is only symptomatic of a much larger problem which the polling results given do not express. Which begs the question what does it mean to be a nation under God, beyond claiming to be one in the Pledge. It brings to mind a similar phenomenon, in which

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

everyone wants to go to heaven, but few are willing to obey God in order to do so. So what does it mean to be a nation under God. Can a nation that encourages it’s mothers to abort their unborn babies be a nation under God? Can a nation who forbids prayer in it schools be so? Can a nation in which it is unlawful to teach of the Creation, in its schools be so? Can a nation that will not acknowledge marriage as an institution ordained by God or His design in the creation be so? Can a nation that will not acknowledge that the proper place for a sexual union is between a husband and wife be so? Can a nation that will not honor the Sabbath or the Lords Day be so? Can a nation that will not acknowledge that there is such a thing as natural law (immutable laws ordained by God) be so? Can a nation in which you can not pray publicly in Jesus name be so? So yes I would like the words “under God included in the Pledge. But more than that, I would like to see America return to the God by whose providence we became a free nation and by whose blessing we became a great and prosperous nation. John Demakowski Franklin, NH.

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Things To Do

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

You have to admit that there is a lot to do here in New Hampshire in the summer. The New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism spent a boatload of money to show people some of that. Unfortunately, once the summer folks arrive it doesn’t take them long to realize that to “Live Free and Splash and Giggle” is only good for a couple of hours. People today have short attention spans and need to find a lot more things to do to keep them busy while they are on vacation to relax. There was one publication I came across recently that listed the top 60 things to do in the area in the summer. It was a pretty comprehensive list that contains most of the attractions in the area as well as some good local restaurants. It was a pretty good idea and would help keep a lot of summer Flatlanders busy. You don’t want to them to become restless or hungry as those can make them very dangerous. I used to be one myself, so I know this first hand. Still, there is a group under served by all of this in the summer – the locals. Sure we know what are the major attractions in the area already and we do our best to stay away from them form the Fourth of July until Labor Day. But we get bored too. So, I have compiled a small list of things and activities that locals can

engage in during the summer months to help keep us busy as well. Some of these things you may already be doing but didn’t know they were fun. For instance. You can run the shopping cart obstacle course at any supermarket parking lot at about 7pm on a summer Friday evening. Visitors to the area are usually kind enough to take the time to set these up before they rush off to their summer homes. Another supermarket game can be played earlier on Friday evening when you and a friend can have a contest to see who can spot the most “I Love New Hampshire” and “Lake Winnipesaukee” articles of clothing in a fifteen minute period. Try to find a way to work, using back and side roads, without coming across a single construction project, a tree cutting project or utility work. You can allow yourself up to five tries, Monday through Friday. (This isn’t as easy as it might seem.) As a Laconia resident I play another maze game where I try to walk from point A to point B somewhere downtown without having someone ask me for change or a cigarette. Every once in awhile I actually win and begin to feel confident, but that is usually short lived by the next time I play the game. Still, this can be played year-round so maybe it shouldn’t be included here. You can go to a local restaurant at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening and bet which party waiting for a table will be the first to complain to the host or

hostess that they were told their table would be ready in fifteen minutes and it has now been seventeen. While at the same restaurant, you can hang out at the bar and takes bets to see which summer Flatlander will be the first one to utter the words “My Lake House.” Being a political year, you can go to a function, meet a candidate for office, shake his/her hand, tell them your name, listen as they pretend to be interested in you and then follow them to the next function, find same candidate, shake his/her hand and see if they can remember your name. As it gets closer to election time, you can do this six or seven times a day. Get mad at visiting Flatlanders who tailgate you because they feel you are going too slow. Get mad at visiting Flatlanders while tailgating them because they are going to slow. I’m sure I have left out a few of things there are for locals to do to keep occupied during the summer season. Still, we are allowed to do some of those touristy things as well. Just make sure you have on your “I Love New Hampshire” sweatshirt so you don’t stick out in the crowd. ******** A few readers have recognized me lately and asked me if I am really running for governor or am I just making the whole thing up. So, as to clear up any misunderstanding about this I am telling you here today that the answer to this is yes.

His early contributions to all of our childhoods (!) was while working at the Milton Bradley Company designing covers for games. color decisions). Not a stranger to mixed media, John sometimes adds a layer of acrylic paint to his watercolors to give that pop of color. Lucky are a group of elderly folk who live near John and receive free art lessons. John’s “glass half full personality comes through and one can’t miss his enthusiasm. Christine J. Ferreira is the daughter and another painter, but of a different sort. Christine enjoys organic shapes and a rich, bold color palette. Each painting is an invitation

to see the beauty of the world through her eyes. Unlike her father, Christine employs a spontaneous method, resulting in acts of “serendipity. Christine has her father’s infectious passion for life and also teaches. Christine teaches art at the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut. Christine is also deaf and consequently understands the communication needs of her Pre-K through High School students. In addition to Christine’s many successes as an artist, she also has a number of degrees – in art and education. John Ferreira is the son but not a Jr., having a different middle name. He creates exquisite landscape photography. His images insist that you see all the beauty of the scene and not take one bit of it for granted. John’s color sense is stunning and all of his works are fine art as opposed to photo journalism. His artistic goal is to help the viewer escape the fast paced world and be transported to the place that has been created by each photograph. John is an excellent example of the quality that is possible in a self-taught artist. He See smith on 42

Union Drama at the Metropolitan Opera

by Rich Lowry Syndicated Columnist

The fat lady will sing -- but only in strict keeping with the work rules set out by the American Guild of Musical

Artists. The Metropolitan Opera has a labor problem. Personnel expenses account for $200 million of the financially struggling Met’s $327 million budget. In the interest of survival in an era more attuned to “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” than “Le Nozze di Figaro,” the Met wants to reduce its labor costs by 16 percent by getting the unions to accept common-sensical work rules and less-generous pension and health benefits. The unions say no and accuse the Met of waging war on their families. The storied but precarious institution could see its next

season disrupted in the labor discord. The Met’s general manager, Peter Gelb, warns that without union flexibility, the very existence of the world-famous, 130-year-old opera is at risk. Well, if worst came to worst, at least the Met’s singers and musicians could make a go of it at the New York City Opera. No, wait, it shut its doors last year. It doesn’t take an opera aficionado to realize that the 21st century isn’t the 19th, and opera is an embattled art form. The Left’s Dark Money Managers: Meet Philip Gara LaMarche Philip Gara LaMarche is a secretive political operative who funnels billions of dollars from undisclosed donors to nonprofits and asby Michelle Malkin troturf groups. Syndicated Columnist But you won’t hear unhinged Harry Reid railing Queegishly about him on the Senate floor. Why? Here’s why: LaMarche is a militant leftist philanthropist. He’s a protected elite -- Columbia University grad, former ACLU leader and Human Rights Watch official -- with ready access to the White House. He and the left’s other dark money managers preach transparency and openness, while plotting behind closed doors to secure power at every level of government. LaMarche currently heads the shadowy Democracy Alliance (DA). In internal documents obtained and published this month by John Hinderaker of the Power Line blog, the group currently describes itself as the “center of gravity” for the progressive funding world. DA enrolls wealthy liberal “members” who coordinate and finance a web of at least 132 left-wing groups. Though some of their members’ and partners’ identities have been exposed, DA takes great care to promise a cloak of donor secrecy “to provide a comfortable environment for our partners to collectively make a real impact.” While they bash Wall Street publicly, DA leaders have quietly recruited venture capitalists,

bankers and hedge fund moguls -- along with union bosses and red-diaper trust fund babies -- to fund their takeover goals. Public school educators who belong to the American Federation of Teachers, headed by $500,000-plus yearly salaried President Randi Weingarten, should know that $230,000 of their hard-earned union dues go to DA, as Lachlan Markay of the Washington Free Beacon has reported. While they bemoan “income inequality,” DA brass have wined, dined and wooed 1-percenter plutocrats with swanky get-togethers featuring New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Kentucky Secretary of State and Democratic Senate candidate Alison Grimes, and popular “comediennes” Stephanie Miller and Lizz Winstead. “Over the past nine years,” the organization brags to potential contributors, DA has “aligned leaders in the progressive movement and political infrastructure” to “achieve victories at the ballot box and in policy fights.” Their agenda spans “social justice,” “climate change,” “voting rights,” gun control, illegal alien amnesty, campaign finance and sustained “strategic investment” to turn red states blue. That’s exactly what DA members Jared Polis and Tim Gill succeeded in doing in once-GOPdominated Colorado in 2008. LaMarche previously served as president and CEO of The Atlantic Philanthropies. As I first reported five years ago, that entity was a Bermuda-based political front stocked with acolytes of progressive billionaire George Soros. The “charity” run by LaMarche dumped some $40 million to help fund the

Ukraine Airliner Tragedy Not End of Gathering Crisis UNITED NATIONS

- Truth is often stranger than fiction. The horrific events over eastern Ukraine, that of a civilian airliner being by John J. Metzler shot out of the Syndicated Columnist skies by a high altitude Sam 11 missile, seem almost the improbable grist of a thriller novel or a pilot episode of the TV series 24 . Add the fact the Malaysian commercial flight and 298 innocent passengers and crew killed in this tragedy had no connection to the ongoing crisis churning seven miles below in the disputed eastern Ukraine and you see an ironic and horrible turn to the crisis. The international community reacted with predictable shock and anguish. Foreign Ministries issued stern condemnations and the UN Security Council went into urgent session. The Russians, assumed predictable cover-up mode, not for their direct actions, but the likely deeds of their locally created separatist Ukrainian militias which have turned into a political Frankenstein. On a day when Russian-backed Ukrainian rebels shot a civilian airliner from the skies over Europe and on a day when Israel troops crossed into Gaza to pursue Hamas terrorists, history will record that the American president was not in the Situation Room in

Washington monitoring the pulse of the dual crises but at two lavish New York city political fundraisers. Yet, days later the UN Security Council to its credit, unanimously passed a resolution condemning “in the strongest terms” the airliner downing and called for “ a full, thorough, and independent international investigation” into the tragic incident in accordance with international civil aviation guidelines.” The Council also called for “unfettered access to the crash site” to ensure its integrity is maintained. Russia, despite its veto power, nervously supported the draft resolution. Had Moscow blocked the inquiry, more attention would have fallen not on the separatist thugs in eastern Ukraine, but their political puppeteers in the Kremlin. By backing the resolution, Putin can claim he is working towards a solution to the atrocity and still have time to spread the black arts of disinformation about the incident. Given the largest loss of life affected almost 200 Dutch civilians on the ill-fated Malaysian MH-17 airliner, The Netherlands Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans addressed the Council, “The demise of almost 200 of my compatriots has left a hole in the heart of the Dutch nation. It has caused grief, anger and despair.” Equally Australia who lost 28 of its citizens used the UN rostrum to call for humanitarian access to the crash site. Foreign Minister Julie

Bishop called the shoot down a “utterly deplorable act,” declaring, “Our resolution also demands a full, thorough and independent international investigation into this act. We must have answers. We must have justice.”

While world opinion has swung against Moscow, the economic reality remains that producing tough West European policy actions to follow political rhetoric remains problematic given Europe’s

Bordering on Madness In a recent confrontation between protesters against the illegal flood of unaccompanied children into the United States and counterby Thomas Sowell p r o t e s t s b y Syndicated Columnist some Hispanic group, one man from the latter group said angrily, “We are as good as you are!” One of the things that make the history of clashes over race or ethnicity such a history of tragedies around the world is that -- regardless of whatever particular issue sets off these clashes -- many people see the ultimate stakes as their worth as human beings. On that, there is no room for compromise, but only polarization. That is why playing “the race card” is such an irresponsible and dangerous political game. The real issue when it comes to immigration is not simply what particular immigration policy America should have, but whether America can have any immigration policy at all. A country that does not control its own borders does not have any immigration policy. There may be laws on the books, but such laws are just meaningless words if people from other countries can cross the borders whenever they choose. One of the reasons why many Americans are reluctant to keep out illegal immigrants -- or even to call them “illegal immigrants,” instead of using the mealymouthed word “undocumented” -- is that most Hispanics they encounter seem to be decent, hard-working people. This column has pointed out,

more than once, that I have never seen Mexicans standing on a street corner begging, though I have seen both whites and blacks doing so. But such impressions are no basis for deciding serious issues about immigration and citizenship. When we do not control our own borders, we have no way of knowing how many of those coming across those borders are criminals or even terrorists. We have no way of knowing how many of those children are carrying what diseases that will spread to our children. And we already know, from studies of American children, that those who are raised without fathers in the home have a high probability of becoming huge, expensive problems for taxpayers in the years ahead, and a mortal danger to others. A hundred years ago, when there was a huge influx of immigrants from Europe, there were extensive government studies of what those immigrants did in the United States. There were data on how many, from what countries, ended up in jail, diseased or on the dole. There were data on how well their children did in school. As with most things, some immigrant groups did very well and others did not do nearly as well. But today, even to ask such questions is to be considered mean-spirited. Such information as we have today shows that immigrants from some countries have far more education than immigrants from some other countries, and do not end up being supported by the taxpayers nearly as often as immigrants from other countries. But such information is seldom mentioned in discussions of immigrants, as if they were See Sowell on 35

The S.S. Mt. Washington at the end of her days in 1941. by David Warren Contributing Writer

Welcome back! When I left you last time we’d just launched the new Mount. A few days earlier, a dredge dug a hole in the bottom of Paugus Bay so her stern wouldn’t get stuck in the mud. Turns out it wasn’t needed. Just prior to launch, hundreds of private boats were warned to keep back or risk being swamped by a possible tidal wave. However, as Jack Irwin commented, when she went in “she made barely a ripple. But all was not well. In fact, the designers and builders must have been horrified at what they saw. The Mount was floating almost 4 feet too high! But worse yet, she was in a “dangerous tipping condition, meaning she might possibly capsize. If you’ve ever tried to balance on a floating log, you know why. She was riding so high, only the rounded portion of her hull was submerged and her center of gravity was dangerously elevated. What went wrong? Before we answer that question, let’s see what happened next. The Lakeport fireboat was immediately called in to pump enough water into her hull to lower her 2 feet. Now we must remember that the Mount was unfinished. Items like the stack, davits and mast could not be installed until she cleared the Weirs

Channel bridge, and the oil tanks were empty. But that water weighed approximately 160 tons; far in excess of the missing stuff. Why was she floating so high? The crowd still hadn’t dispersed at 5pm when Lavallee took the Mount in tow behind his steamboat the West Wind, and headed for the bridge. And here’s where we encounter the first big legend. The story goes that she was too high to clear, so Lavallee, ever the showman, invited 500 young boys watching from the bridge to jump aboard and help ballast her down. I would ask you to walk out on that bridge sometime in see if you’d like to make that leap way down onto a solid steel deck. And yet, there are eye witnesses alive today (including Vernon Cotton) who swear it happened. I have no doubts that people were invited on board for the ride. But the weight of 500 boys would have lowered her less than 2 inches. In fact, it appears that she was simply misaligned with the bridge on the first pass, and the second attempt was successful. Many photos bear this out. The Mount was completed at the Weirs, and it was here that Dr. Pete Rosenelli, a former “Weirs Boy and Miss Winnipesaukee driver, witnessed a strange event. He watched dozens of men push thousands of wheelbarrows of concrete

Must have driven the designer nuts. The SS Mt. Washington made her first trial run around Governor’s island in late August. It was not successful. The oil burners on the boilers were out of adjustment, resulting in insufficient steam pressure. But more importantly, the propellers, which were still too close to the surface, were sucking down air (a process called ventilation) and couldn’t get a good bite. The burners were fixed, and cavitation plates (a misnomer) were installed over the props, and she made good time on the second attempt. But the question again comes up. Why was the Mount riding Fill 10 so high? lb Tanks, 0 2 To solve this mystery, 11th is FREE! let’s go back to the design phase of the project. One of the architect’s jobs was to figure out where the new waterline should be in order to accommodate the propellers. Once that was decided, he now had See warren on 26

Stress is an everyday part of our lives. Whether it’s emotional, mental or physical, stress takes a toll on our bodies and can prevent us from completing even the most mundane daily tasks as well as enjoying our leisure time with family and friends. Our bodies respond to stress in a variety of ways and while all stress isn’t necessarily bad or damaging, the key rests in being able to get proper treatment before it turns into something more serious. “Stress is designed as a survival mechanism and involves the release of glucocorticoid hormones

that exert physiological effects to help protect us from danger.” Said Penny Kendall-Reed, ND, clinical advisor for the Pennsylvania-based Douglas Laboratories. “We are faced with multiple fight or flight episodes and are faced with a multitude of more chronic stressors such as poor sleep, excessive workload and unstable blood sugar, as well as emotional conflict and perceived stress.” We face a multitude of obstacles on a daily basis and how the brain responds to a given demand can be the difference to how stressful that change actually is and how quickly we recover. Our goal needs to be not only de-stressing, but a full recovery time and an everyday routine that is manageable and as stress free as possible. Ways to obtain a more stress free life would be a healthy diet, supplements, exercise or some form of movement and structural integrity. A strong foundation, digestive health and

to mention we as humans in our modern day society ask too much of our bodies, which triggers our systems to constantly be working in overload mode. At some point your body is going to want to just stop! In those with low testosterone a variety of issues including impotency, low libido, depression, bone loss, hair loss and infertility can occur. Testosterone is a hormone required for male development and is produced primarily in the testicles. This hormone is responsible for building muscle and bone mass as well as sperm production and sex drive and influences male pattern fat distribution, bone density, and red blood cell production. Common causes of Low Testosterone include, Type 2 diabetes, infection, hormone disorders, obesity and chronic conditions of the liver and kidney. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the persistent inability to achieve or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. Before an erection can occur numerous organ systems in the body need to function properly. Should any or

all systems fail, erectile dysfunction may result. These systems include the brain, hormone release, muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, and emotional response. The hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain need to function to stimulate the testes to produce the testosterone required for libido (sexual drive or desire). Injury, stroke, or a tumor may affect brain function. Hypogonadism, trauma, or surgery may result in failure of the testes to produce testosterone. Nerve supply to the penis needs to be intact. Nerves can be damaged by trauma or surgery, especially after prostate surgery. Adequate blood supply needs to be delivered to the penis. Blood supply can be affected by trauma or surgery. More commonly, blood supply is restricted because of peripheral vascular disease or hardening of the arteries, the same scenario that can lead to heart attack and stroke. Patients with erectile dysfunction have a high likelihood of also having coronary artery disease. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high choSee latham on 15

lesterol, smoking, and diabetes. The muscles and tissues of the penis need to be capable of accepting the increased blood supply required to produce an erection. Damage due to trauma or surgery may be the underlying cause of a flaccid penis. An appropriate emotional and psychological state is required to achieve an erection. Mental and emotional problems that could lead to erectile dysfunction include depression, mental disorders, stress, and performance anxiety. Side effects from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI antidepressants) like fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro) can also be a factor in erectile dysfunction. Some natural supplements to aid in these male hormonal issues include: Flaxseed, arginine, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, and bioflavonoids.

Botanicals to aid to testosterone and erectile dysfunction include: Horny Goat Weeds, Tongkat Ali, Maca Root, Damiana, Tribulus Terrestris. These botanicals can enhance endogenous production of testosterone and testosterone precursors including androstenedione and DHEA.

Back-to-School Snacks

Healthy vs Not so Healthy What should you do when your kids balk at the nutritious snacks you picked out for scouts, sports, and other group activities? They complain none of the other moms send the yucky stuff and they want you to send cookies, sodas, and snack cakes too. Should you cave or remain firm in your decision to provide only wholesome food? Give Kids What They Love "Most kids get over a quarter of their daily calories from snacks. That's enough to qualify for a fourth meal," says Karen Ansel, MS, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Unfortunately, most of those snacks are desserts, sugary drinks, and salty foods, she adds. Serving healthful alternatives gives your kids the nutritional boost their growing bodies need. Kids Like Wraps Spread nut butter on a whole-wheat tortilla or flatbread and sprinkle sliced strawberries, bananas, or peaches on one-third of the wrap before rolling and slicing. Try hummus and shredded carrots on rolled flatbread. Fill a small tortilla with a variety of diced and shredded vegetables and reduced-fat ranch dressing. Kids Love to Dip Mix taco seasonings into low-fat plain yogurt and serve with veggie sticks. Serve baked tortilla chips with a choice of salsa or bean dip. Healthy + Not so Healthy = A snack they may love Another approach, suggests Ansel, is to send a mix of the goodfor-you and not so healthy snacks such as both fruit and cookies. "There’s no reason kids can't have a little of each," she suggests. Or simply toss a sweet into something more nutritious. For example, before rolling a flatbread with peanut butter, sprinkle some mini chocolate chips on top. Add chocolate chips or raisins or broken cookies to your homemade trail mix of nuts, dried fruit and whole grain cereals. Or offer a homemade cookie with oats and dried apricots. By offering nutritious snacks, you're providing the food and nutrients your children need for good health and well-being. Perhaps more importantly, you're also teaching them what a balanced diet looks like and how to eat well. Now that's something that lasts well beyond snack time!

Book-Signing For Fahim Fazli And Mike Moffett

CONCORD – In 1973 Zahir Shah left his throne as King of a peaceful Afghanistan, abdicating to Italy. In Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul, Fahim Fazli continued on with his life as a second grader. Little did he know that his beloved homeland would inexorably descend into a chaos that continues to today. At the same time Mike Moffett was preparing to graduate from New Hampshire’s Groveton High School. Little did he know that Zahir Shah’s decision would also have a profound impact on his life. Fast-forward to 2010 and Operation Enduring Freedom. Moffett and Fazli would meet for the first time in the volatile Afghan crossroads town of Delaram, where Fazli was serving as an interpreter for the Marines. Moffett, a professor at NHTI-Concord and a reserve Marine lieutenant colonel, was in Afghanistan as a field historian, traveling from combat outpost to combat outpost, recording Marine stories of the Afghan conflict for posterity. Moffett was intrigued to learn that Fazli was a Hollywood actor who’d appeared in numerous movies and television shows, typecast as a bad guy—such as in IRONMAN, where he famously slugged Robert Downey Jr. “So what was he doing in dangerous Delaram?” Moffett wondered. He soon found out that Fazli had volunteered to return to his homeland as an interpreter. He later recorded an interview with the Afghan expatriate and marveled at Fazli’s tumultuous life journey Fazli and Moffett discussed the possibility of a book and stayed in touch after returning to America. They worked up an outline which they pitched to Captain Dale

Mike Moffett (L) and Fahim Fazli Dye, perhaps the most prominent military figure in Hollywood. Dale and his wife, Dr. Julia Dye, ran a publishing operation, Warriors Publishing Group, which specialized in military stories. A former Marine, Dye got his Hollywood start advising and acting in Oliver Stone’s Academy Awardwinning PLATOON. He later worked with Steven Spielberg on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Fazli’s Marine/Actor combination resonated with the Dyes and so work began on a bona fide manuscript. “I enjoy writing,” said Moffett, a longtime sports columnist for the Weirs Times. “But I didn’t realize how much work it would be to partner on a serious publishing project. It took considerable time on an almost daily basis for well over a year.” Moffett lauded the influence of Mrs. Dye on the project development. “Dr. Julia is a very serious, no-nonsense professional,” said Moffett. “I learned a lot from the process.” Moffett also credited the efforts of Dr. Kathy Smith of the New Hampshire Humanities Council, who also volunteered

considerable time editing the book, which was eventually entitled FAHIM SPEAKS: A WarriorActor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back. “It’s a war story, an adventure story, a love story and a Hollywood story,” said Moffett. “Here’s a guy who volunteered to go to a dangerous place, where he was so successful at bringing together Americans and Afghans that the Taliban put a price on his head.” A California book launching was held on May 30, 2012, which happened to be Moffett’s birthday—and Fazli’s. “We thought it would be nice to have an event on the traditional Memorial Day, which coincided with our birthdays,” said Moffett, who added that funds from the project have been donated to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation to support children of Marines killed in the line of duty, as well as to Wounded Warriors. FAHIM SPEAKS went on to receive critical acclaim and rave reviews, as well as a Gold Medal for “Top Biography” from the Military Writers Society of America. The book See moffett on 18

was nominated for other honors as well, including “Book-of-the-Year” with the Oral History Association. Movie? Fazli has stayed busy since the publication of his biography. Among other projects, he had a small speaking role in ARGO, the Ben Affleck film which won the Academy Award for “Best Picture.” He can be seen in FORT BLISS, starring Michelle Monaghan, scheduled for a September release. He’ll also appear in Clint Eastwood’s AMERICAN SNIPER, with Brad Cooper, tentatively slated for a November release. More recently, Fazli just returned from Morocco, where he had a role in ROCK THE KASBAH, directed by Barry Levinson, and starring Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, and Zooey Deschanel. And now, finally, Fazli will pay his first visit to New Hampshire, the home of his co-author. “Well, I’ve been to Afghanistan,” said Moffett. “And I’ve been to California many times. It’s time for Fahim to experience the beauty of the Granite

Fahim Fazli on the movie set with Bill Murray. State!” Fazli’s trip will include a book signing at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord, on Thursday, August 7, at 7 p.m.

“I am very excited,” said Fazli. “I’ve never been to New England, but because of Michael, I have many Facebook friends from New Hampshire. I

look forward to meeting them!” Fazli’s N.H. trip will involve more than the Concord book signing. “I want to take Fahim up Mount Washington on August 6 and get some publicity photos,” said Moffett. “The terrain and topography resembles that of the Hindu Kush, and I would love to see a few scenes of a FAHIM SPEAKS movie filmed there.” A movie? “There has been speculation and talk of a FAHIM SPEAKS movie project ever since the book came out,” said Moffett. “It’s only natural. And Fahim is not camera-shy. I think he also loves the idea of the book being the basis for a movie.” There are countless movie proposals floating around greater Hollywood. But Moffett feels this project has a chance. “To begin with, Fahim is of Hollywood,” explained Moffett. “Tom Hanks wrote a blurb for our book cover.” (Hanks and Fazli worked together during the filming of CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR.) “And frankly, Hollywood likes to celebrate its own,” Moffett added. “I believe that dynamic is what won ARGO the Academy Award. Hollywood people as heroic figures, as protagonists.” Ever the historian, Moffett pointed out that many Hollywood actors joined the military after America went to war following the 1941 Pearl Harbor attacks. “Everyone from Clark Gable to Jimmy Stewart donned a uniform and many went into harm’s way,” said Moffett. “But after the 9/11 attacks, how many Hollywood actors, how many members of the Screen Actors Guild, actually put on a uniform and went into harm’s way in Iraq or Afghanistan? As far as I can tell, approximately one. Fahim Fazli.” Moffett obviously has some affection for his friend and co-author. He hopes Fahim’s inspiring

journey does translate to a movie project that might move forward. “There is so much to Fahim’s story,” explained Moffett. “A California writer is now adapting the book to a serious movie treatment/script proposal.” Would a studio or a bigname director give the proposal a serious look? “That’s the challenge,” Moffett said. “And I think a New Hampshire connection could help.” The notion of Hindu Kush mountain scenes being filmed in the White Mountains struck a chord with many. Matt Newton of the N.H. Film Bureau and Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen all signed off on letters extolling the virtues of the Granite State as a film venue, letters that were included in the project’s pitch package. “I absolutely believe that we need role models like Fahim,” said Moffett. “Illegal immigration is the top issue in our country now. We should celebrate people like Fahim, who fought the Communists, who escaped to become a refugee, who waited in line to come to America, who learned English, who studied our history, who learned to love the USA to become a citizen, and who put on a uniform and risked his life for his adopted country.” Both Moffett and Fazli believe in their project. “I always say to follow your dreams,” said Fazli. “Anything is possible in America. I know firsthand.” Moffett said they’re all taking things one step at a time. “We’re hoping for a good book-signing event on August 7,” said the NHTI professor. “And a nice hike up Mt. Washington. Hopefully there will be good weather. But we’re going to keep climbing, keep moving forward, no matter what!”

OUR Marine? Hondurans First! KG is Back -Brenda of CWFA It has been 19 weeks that our Marine has been held prisoner in Mexico. What did by Niel Young he do? Advocates Columnist Westward on his way to a clinic in California one night took a wrong turn and ended up over the Mexico border. Our Marine has three guns with him, which he immediately told the Mexican Police. If this was your son or grandson would you think that soon after this arrest that some important person from America would have made a call to request the immediate release of Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi. Here is a suggestion that I made, after OUR Marine has sat in their jail for the past 7 months. During Hussein Obama’s fundraising (several times) events in and around California it would have been good if Barack could have called and alerted the U.S. Ambassador in Mexico to bring OUR Marine to the closest airport within 3 hours. Our Commander In Chief will be picking up Sgt. Tahmooressi and ALL of his property, truck and guns, to the airport as well. Here is what is more important to Obama. ******** NY Times: “U.S. Considering Refugee Status for Hondurans. Hoping to stem the recent surge of migrants at the Southwest border, the Obama administration is considering whether to allow hundreds of minors and young adults from Honduras into the United States without making the dangerous

trek through Mexico, according to a draft of the proposal. If approved, the plan would direct the government to screen thousands of children and youths in Honduras to see if they can enter the United States as refugees or on emergency humanitarian grounds. It would be the first American refugee effort in a nation reachable by land to the United States, the White House said, putting the violence in Honduras on the level of humanitarian emergencies in Haiti and Vietnam, where such programs have been conducted in the past amid war and major crises. Continue reading the main story Critics of the plan were quick to pounce, saying it appeared to redefine the legal definition of a refugee and would only increase the flow of migration to the United States. Administration officials said they believed the plan could be enacted through executive action, without congressional approval, as long as it did not increase the total number of refugees coming into the country.” Wow. I wish Obama would treat us the way he does INVADERS, and other lawbreakers. For “their” safety he is sending planes to pick them up. Perhaps one of those planes could handle one more passenger, an American Hero by the name of Sgt.Tahmooressi. ******** “Gallup Daily: Obama Job Approval. Each result is based on a threeday rolling average.” This is good news. How low can he go before he says for the good of the country and my party, I have done my best to ruin

“The Edge Above The Rest

Contributing Writer

Many backyard birders have a favorite song bird. Based on our customer’s inquiries in New Hampshire, the chickadee, cardinal and hummingbird top the list. The average backyard has the ability to attract over 25 different species of wild birds each and every day, no matter what the season. How to attract each species depends on your natural environment, feeder and seed selections. For some birders, socalled nuisance birds can be a concern due to intense flocking and the monopolization of bird feeders created by mobbing activity. Starlings and grackles are the usual culprits of these observations. The blue jay has an interesting following. You either love them or can do without them. The middle ground doesn’t seem to exist when discussing this song bird. It is the most misunderstood backyard visitor. We would like to use today’s column to explain these unique birds. Consider the blue jay as you would an older sibling. An older brother or sister can be protectors or bullies, depending on the situation at hand. If someone is perceived to be a threat to you at sometime during your life, you would expect your older siblings to stand up for you as they offer protection. However, there may be times when these same protectors can push you around or bully you into an unwise activity due to your younger age or diminutive size. Blue jays are the older brother or sister to most

603-848-6971 JMDSERVICESLLC.COM birds in the wild. Whenever danger presents itself, the blue jays will be the first to sound the warning call. Have you ever observed a hawk flying around your area looking for prey, only to be mobbed by dozens of blue jays? These protectors of the sky will force birds of prey to change their feeding zones away from the blue jays’ designated territories. In this instance, these birds are accomplishing the same goal as an older sibling aiding a younger family member. In other instances, blue jays will literally bully their way into any backyard and monopolize bird feeders until they have had their fill. Blue jays love to announce their arrival with a raucous, causing all other birds to scatter. Hence, the bully characteristic that so many customers attribute to this species. Love or leave them, the blue jay has a unique place in the wild bird society that many humans may not understand. Without this bird in every backyard, many other species would probably fall prey to hawks, cats, and other threats to song bird survival. In many circumstances, you will hear chipmunks chipping and blue jays squawking in chorus whenever the same danger has entered the area. Together, these

two very different species join forces as early warning detectors. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. to figure out how much the boat would have to weigh, and where that weight would have to be located to get the boat to float on that line. You wouldn’t believe how difficult a job that is. If you remember your Greek history, you’ll recall the story of old Sam Archimedes, who was splashing around in his tub one day trying to figure out how he could determine if the king’s crown was made of gold. Suddenly, he leaped out of the tub and ran naked through the streets of Syracuse shouting “Eureka (I’ve found it). The locals shouted back something I can’t print in a high class publication like this. What he figured out is that a floating object displaces its weight in water, so if you can figure out the submerged volume of the hull, you can determine the weight needed to push it down that deep. (Fresh water weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic foot just thought you’d want to know.) Believe me, calculating the volume of a complex shape like a boat hull will

make you tear your hair out. There’s Simpson’s rule, a device called a planimeter, and many sharpened pencils. However, there’s one shortcut you can take. Most hulls are symmetric on the port and starboard sides. So you can save time by calculating the volume of half the hull (typically the port side), and then multiply by 2. It’s very important if you take this shortcut, that you DON’T FORGET TO MULTIPLY BY 2!!! If you make that mistake, the volume of the hull will be twice what you think, and therefore the boat will have to weigh twice what you think to float on it’s lines. Let’s take the Mount for example. Let’s say the calculation showed that half the hull would displace 250 tons. Now assume that we forget to multiply by 2, to arrive at the correct full hull displacement of 500 tons, which is what the boat would have to weigh to float on it’s designed waterline. So we design the boat to weigh 250 tons. Here’s what Doug Brown had to say about this. “Byron (Hedblom) spoke to me of John Alden’s mistake of about 4’ on the waterline. It was never mentioned as a fact but it was assumed that they forgot to multiply by 2 in their final calculations. Professional courtesy never made the mistake public for JA’s benefit. Obviously it was in nobody’s interest to go public with this. Rest assured that I carefully

checked that John Alden is now out of business (I was interested to learn that all of their plans were purchased by a ship modeler)! Also be assured that the Mount is now perfectly safe. Many inclination tests have shown this to be so. The Mount had a very short season in 1940 and GS & E spent the following winter working on the boat. One of the pleasures of ship modeling is the appreciation you gain for the beauty of the vessel you’re reconstructing. Or not. At the risk of offending some, I would simply state that the contrast between the Chateaugay and SS Mt. Washington II is jarring. The builders must have noticed this as well. Changes made to mitigate the ugliness factor included moving the lifeboats up to the hurricane deck, adding curved inserts to all the windows, and building a canopy over the aft portion of the boat deck. This is all very interesting, as the original artist’s concept was actually quite pleasing. It included design elements that were incorporated only after the Mount was converted to diesel power. Unfortunately, all this work was for naught. By 1941, oil was in short supply and travel restrictions had begun. The decline in tourism, followed by the declaration of war on Dec. 8 doomed the Mount, and the company was forced into bankruptcy on April See warren on 27

10, 1942. The assessed value of the boat was $64,000 and bids were invited. It’s interesting to read newspaper accounts from the time, as a bidding war was expected. Turns out that GS & E was the only bidder, and they got the Mount for it’s salvage value; $30,000. The sale also conveyed real estate holdings at various ports around the lake along with mail carrying rights. After expenses were paid, secured creditors got approximately $25,000 back on their $108,000 investment, and the remaining creditors lost their entire investment of $27,000. The Mount was then laid up in Center Harbor, and suffered a further indignity when the Coast Guard contracted GS & E to remove her engines for use in coastal mine sweepers. There is no evidence that the engines were ever used, and one account says they were lost at sea. The age of commercial steam boating on Winnipesaukee came to an end in 1945 when the Uncle Sam mail boat was converted to diesel, and Leander Lavallee died shortly thereafter in Feb. 1947. With the war winding down in 1945, GS & E decided to make use of their investment. So they built the Sophie C. and restarted passenger and limited mail service on the lake. (Note that the Uncle Sam and its successors held the official floating post office title until the Sophie C. took that over in 1969.) 1 wondered why they did that, given that they had the Mount, so I asked Doug, and here’s what he said. “The war had ended, and General Ship was left with an empty ship on it’s hands on the lake. The government had made many oral promises to the Boss and Byron that they would replace the steam engines when the war ended. The war had ended, and nobody in Washington knew, or cared to know, of the promise, and it was a dead end for General Ship to get help in this major financial obligation. So the Boss and Byron decided they would not venture

Engine and Foundry Co. of San Francisco, CA. for a high end yacht. The Yacht owner went bankrupt and was forced to sell. And so the MV Mount Washington was born. She was lengthened during the winter of 1982/3 to become the MS Mount, and the old Enterprise DMG I-8’s were replaced during the winter of 2010/11 with new Caterpiller V-12’s . Believe it

The age of commercial steam boating on Winnipesaukee came to an end in 1945 when the Uncle Sam mail boat was converted to diesel, more capital in the Mount, and it was a dead issue. Another aspect was that the Mount would need a marine railway in the future, and that would be another great expense.” Permit me to stop here for a minute to let that sink in. This was the end of the line for the Mount, and it would be scrapped at Center Harbor! It appears that may have been the plan all along (remember they paid the scrap value) and that what they really wanted was the real estate and mail rights, which the Sophie C. could exercise at much lower cost. THANK GOODNESS the next word in Doug’s narrative is “BUT”! He continues. “But General Ship had made a fair profit that year and that becomes part of the story. The Boss asked Vincent Bennet, our machinery superintendent, to look around casually and see if any diesels of the size needed for the Mount might be available in the country. Bennet was well known in the diesel circuit, and he found two perfect engines available immediately, if acted upon. As I recall the Enterprises cost $80,000. The Boss said ‘Buy them’! When Byron heard the news he was very upset - maybe furious - and asked his father why he’d changed their plans. The Boss said something like ‘We had a little profit and it always seems to evaporate - now I know where the money is!’ Carl Roessler and I stayed at the Boss’s summer cottage in Wolfeboro, and worked on the Mount during the summer and

fall of 1946. Our wives and children were there, as usual, so that made a fine summer and lots of work for us all. Byron stayed aloof for a while, but could not help getting involved in the job, and added his expertise. We made a very fast and efficient redo of the Mount with it’s two new engines, and had it on line for passengers by labor day. So you see - by the rare coincidence of a profit at General Ship and two perfect engines being available at the right moment and the Boss wanting to lock up the money where he could see it - and I’m sure he wanted to see the Mount running - it all happened!” What a lucky break that those engines were available. Just one of a long string of fortuitous events that assured the Mount’s survival. They were custom built by the Enterprise

DEAR TIM: I’ve watched people use electric drills for years but never held one in my hand. Can you give me pointers on how to use a drill and share any tips about drilling into wood, tile, metal and concrete? --Alie W., Morgan Hill, California DEAR ALIE: Your question caused me to do a hard reset in my brain. It’s easy to forget what it’s like for a beginner. Asking questions is how we learn. In fact, where you are with electric drills I am with Morse code and other aspects of my new hobby, amateur radio. I’m trying to do things in radio I’ve never done before and constantly am asking for tips from more experienced radio operators. As simple as you might think an electric drill is, a new modern drill can be a fairly complicated tool. I remember my first electric drill. It had an on and off switch and a single speed: fast! Modern electric drills have forward and reverse and variable speeds. Some have hammer action built in that allows you to drill and chisel through masonry at the same time,

These tools and bits allow you to drill holes through a multitude of materials. Pictured, from the top, are a spade bit (in the drill), a masonry bit with titanium tip, a hole saw, and a row of wood drill bits, including a titanium coated bit (2nd from l.) and bit with a centering tip (3rd from l.). and some have clutches that stop or slow the drill when a certain amount of resistance is encountered. In other words, a modern electric drill with all these features is a complex tool. But don’t let that to discourage you. You don’t have to master all of those features on the first day you practice with one If you’re going to buy a new drill, one of the first decisions you need to make is between a cordless or a corded model. If you only plan to use it occasionally and not for hours at a time, a cordless drill is perfect. If you

plan to use the tool for hours at a time, I’d get a corded drill that operates on the standard 120 volts provided by the electric outlets in your home. In addition to the drill, there are countless accessories that allow you to drill through just about any material. There are so many that I’ll just give you the very high-altitude overview. Wood might be the most common material you drill through. There are regular twisted drill bits that do a splendid job of making small holes up to 1/2 inch in diameter. See builder on 29

Some have tiny, sharp centering tips at the top of the bit. These spike tips prevent the drill bit from wandering as you start the drill spinning. A wandering bit is a common problem when you drill just about anything, especially metal, tile or any material that’s very hard. If you want to drill larger diameter holes in wood, you may want to use a spade bit or even a hole saw. These accessories are designed to drill perfectly round holes in materials. As you might expect, there are all different types of spade bits and hole saws, so look at many and read the claims the manufacturers make about them. My guess is that at some point you’ll need to drill into or through concrete, brick, stone or thick tile. You’ll need a special bit that has a carbide tip on it. Carbide is very hard; only a few materials -- like diamond

-- are harder. Bits equipped with this tip grind their way through natural stone, concrete and tile. These bits bore even faster if the drill is a hammer drill. Hammer drills rapidly pulsate up and down as they turn. The tool becomes a miniature jackhammer much like the ones workers use to break apart concrete slabs. If you’re drilling steel or iron, you’ll want special drill bits made for metal. On the label of the bit, it will clearly say it’s made to drill into metal and list the metal types. These hardened bits, when used with oil at slow drilling speeds, cut through metal very quickly. The key to drilling through metal is to keep the drill bit cool. Oil does this by absorbing lots of the heat created by friction. Here are a few tips I’ve discovered after drilling thousands and thousands of holes in my career:

NEVER replace your roof again! Little to NO maintenance. METAL SHINGLES: Guaranteed to NEVER crack, split, burn, curl, or rot. Unique interlocking system makes it impervious to ice dams. 50 year warranty METAL PANELS: Energy Star rated. Cuts down on cooling cost. Little to NO winter maintenance, watch the snow slide off! 40 year warranty.

--Use a drill press to create perfect holes in thick material. --Use increasingly larger and larger bits when drilling a large hole in metal. --To avoid b lowou ts when drilling cabinet knob holes, use a sharp bit and use minimal pushing pressure just as the bit breaks through

the back of the door or drawer. --Use a handy jig to create slanted pocket holes to join pieces of wood with screws instead of glue. --When drilling a deep hole in masonry with a carbide bit, pull up on the drill every five seconds to help get concrete dust and particles out of

the hole. --Always practice on some scrap material when drilling through anything for the first time. --The way to become proficient is practice, practice and more practice.

nal body of water on this spot. In the late 1920s, the town voted to build a dam in order to create a small lake so that hotel guests in the area would have swimming access in the summer. There were around thirty hotels in Bethlehem in those days. In 1929, Sunset Lake was opened. In 1938, the great Hurricane, which brought great devastation to much of New England, caused the dam to give way and all the water for Sunset Lake was lost. In 1939, the Works Project Administration provided $11,000 to

The Project In 2011, the members of the committee went to the town and asked if they could look into repairing the pool. After extensive study of the pool structure it was decided that there was no cracks or leaks in the structure, an idea that had been thought a reason for the pool sitting empty for so many years. A test of the fill pipe was done and soon the

old pool was filled with 330, 000 gallons of water. “We filled up the pool and it held water well enough,” said Bell. “We knew we could repair it.” A state inspector was called in to look at the pool and agreed it could be repaired but told the group they were in for a “ton” of work. “He was certainly right about that,” said Bell. “We didn’t realize at the beginning how much work that would be.” The first step was in taking up the concrete sidewalks, shoveling the sand underneath around the perimeter four feet down, in order to install thirteen new skimmers around the pool. This included cutting 2’x2’ holes for each new skimmer in the concrete. Each hole See POOL on 31

Bethlehem for a new pool and one was built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). The pool continued in operation until 2003 when a state report claimed that there were deficiencies with the pool, including upgrades needed for the filter and circulatory system. The water was drained and the pool sat empty for the ensuing years. “The pool deteriorated a lot after it closed,” said Phil Bell, one of the members of the Pool Committee who helped spearhead the renovations. “Every winter we would go to a slide show at the

took eight to nine hours to create. Next was removing all of the old galvanized pipe buried along the outer walls and also building forms for each new skimmer. Repairing the walls of the pool came next – eight to eighteen inches thick. They were having a hard time getting through the walls so they called in someone they knew with heavier equipment. “They told us they’d be done by lunchtime,” said Bell. “They ended up working till seven at night. Once they were done I said ‘give us a bill.’ He said to me ‘Look, this is for the kids, just get us a case of beer.’” And that was the way it went over the course of the rest of the renovations. “Any time we called someone, a contractor or anyone, they always came and they never gave us a bill.” “People gave us their weekends, their time and their knowledge and they never charged us,” said

One of the best examples of the community being involved in this project was in the painting of the pool. “We had to use an epoxy primer first so that meant that the paint had

to be applied the next day,” said Bell. The weekend that seemed perfect for the job started with a rainy Saturday so the job had to wait until Sunday. Over thirty people showed up for the priming and they

Without the hard work of the many volunteers, the pool never could have been completed this year.

On painting day, thirty people showed up and by the end of that day, the pool was glistening with its new beautiful blue color. “One of the gentleman at the Odd Fellows Hall

next door to the pool told me he had been watching the renovations over the years and had his doubts that we would ever finish,” said Bell. “But then he told me when he saw See pool on 33

day and watched as the children from town came to use the pool and we couldn’t help but tear up, said Bell, eyes filling with tears as he remembered the moment. “We hope this will show the rest of the state what a community can do. In the movies, the c r e d i t w o u l d roll, the l i g h t s w o u l d come up and the audience would go home. the pool turn blue, he knew we were close. Besides the work on the pool, the bath house was completely renovated including a new roof and paint and the addition of the wooden bathing beauty figure on the roof that used to adorn the roof of the Baker Brook Barefoot Boy Restaurant in the 50s and 60. (The condition of the inside of the Bath House was found suitable to be used mostly as is.) Bud Miller, a local plumber, supplied all of the labor and parts for the plumbing in the renovated Bath House and it was dedicated in his name upon opening. The pump room was also a shining example of community involvement,

with 119 individual volunteers who gave their time along with many businesses that supplied excavators, bobcats, cement saws, cement forms, trucks, painting supplies, wood, ladders, circular saws and on and on. Who were the volunteers on the project. “I would name them all, if I could, said Dick Robie. “There were so many individuals and businesses involved that I would be amiss in trying to name them all. I would hate to leave anyone unmentioned so I won’t try. The town did appropriate $60,000 for the project and the committee raised $10,000 more with fundraising. Still,

the volunteers and donations of supplies made the project workable because without them, the financial burden would have been impossible to meet. Dick Robie pointed out that the very day we were there to do this story, an article appeared in the Union Leader telling of the town of Claremont’s decision to scrap the renovation of their own town pool because of the cost - $400,000. “We can’t even put a value on the effort the community put into this project, said Robie. Reading the Union Leader article you would have to guess that the cost foe the Bethlehem project would have been around the same, if not for the volunteers and donations of materials and equipment. Once the pool was thought ready to open, the state inspector was called in. “He gave us an A+ rating and me a hug, laughed Bell. “Even he knew what a great thing this was for the town. On Monday, July 14th, the Bethlehem Pool was open again for a new generation. “We all stood there that

with pay. Touche. Under the current rules, the base pay for chorus members, who also make on average $200,000 a year, covers four performances a week. The members get paid extra for rehearsals -- even if they haven’t sung in four performances that week. They also earn overtime for singing in any opera over four hours, which makes Richard Wagner the best thing that ever happened to a Met singer’s paycheck. His “Parsifal clocks in at five hours, and wasn’t performed last season, in part because of labor costs. The union case against its nemesis Gelb is that he’s a spendthrift, and there’s something to it. Gelb dropped almost $20 million a few years ago on a production of Wagner’s “Ring cycle that included a 45-ton set. If the production underperformed at the box office, it was on a scale worthy of the Met and was funded by a gift. Only unions would complain that an opera manager is spending too much on opera and not enough on overtime pay and pension benefits. Given the head winds in the culture, what the Met accomplishes is extraordinary -- more than 200 performances a season, in front of 800,000 people in the house and another couple of million in broadcasts in movie theaters. It is working to preserve a demanding art form that represents one of the high points of Western civilization. It would be a shame for the ages if it were brought low, not just by indifference without, but by shortsighted union grubbiness within. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

abstract people in an abstract world. Questions about immigration and citizenship are questions about irreversible decisions that can permanently change the composition of the American population and the very culture of the country -- perhaps in the direction of the cultures of the countries from which illegal immigrants have fled. During the era of epidemics that swept across Europe in centuries past, people fleeing from those epidemics often spread the diseases to the places to which they fled. Counterproductive and dangerous cultures can be spread to America the same way. Willful ignorance is not the way to make immigration decisions or any other decisions. Yet the Obama administration is keeping secret even where they are dumping illegal immigrants by the thousands, in communities far from the border states. Looking before we leap is not racism -- except in the sense that anything the Obama administration doesn’t like is subject to being called racist. Americans who gather to protest the high-handed way this administration has sneaked illegal immigrants into their communities can expect the race card to be played against them. The time is long overdue to stop being intimidated by such cheap -- and dangerous -- political tactics. (though not Britain and the Netherlands) dependence on Russian energy supplies. Separatists in these “rebel People’s Republics” form a combination of Moscow- backed nationalist paramilitaries, soldiers of fortune, and angry Soviet wanabee thugs. But beyond their automatic weapons and rudimentary use of armored vehicles, these clowns simply don’t have the competency to use high-tech surface to air missiles at higher altitudes with chilling precision. Thus while the rebels had shot down a number of Ukrainian military aircraft the preceding week, these planes were at lower altitudes. It appears highly unlikely if near impossible that separatists, despite ill intent, could actually operate and effectively target a sophisticated Sam 11, “Buk” anti-aircraft missile launcher. United Kingdom Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall Grant commented succinctly, “The context for this tragedy is Russia’s attempt to destabilize a sovereign state and violate its territorial integrity.” American delegate Samantha Power in a moment of forceful clarity exclaimed “This appalling attack occurred in the context of a crisis that has been fueled by Russian support for separatists— through arms, weapons and training. “ The Ambassador added, “This war can be ended. Russia can end this war. Russia must end this war.” The crash site presents a tangle of apocalyptic human and aircraft remains among the summer sunflowers, yet another tragic testament to Ukraine’s threatened sovereignty. The West must move carefully to defuse this crisis before it widens. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. FERBER from 44

might recognize a spot on the Kingswood course. Stretching boundaries (if an artist really has any) another image uses a bit of a time warp in its message. Continuing two series I’ve been doing, there will be a painting from Ossipee Lake again–a wonderful evening beach scene showing Chocorua and Mount Washington. And there will be one more installment in my “white on white” themed work.” Peter goes on to explain, “I’m sure there will even be a surprise or two between now and the day the brushes get put down and the doors open. That’s the nature of the meandering path an artist is fortunate to take.” Owner of The Art Place gallery, Barbara Gibbs discusses the show, “In looking at some of the new pieces that Peter has painted for the Summer Gallery show, my immediate thought was “well there is something for everyone.” Then, I thought about our area and the lakeside living that Wolfeboro, Alton Bay, Meredith, and surrounding towns provide, and that same thing can be said for our lovely Lakes Region as well—there is indeed something for everyone.

As shown in Peter’s watercolor painting, “Dockside Gathering,” people are shopping, eating ice cream, boating, picnicking at the park, walking the dog, or simply relaxing in a lawn chair.” She continues, “then there are people who enjoy the simplicity and beauty of nature as seen in a watercolor painting that Peter did of a hummingbird at a feeder. The warmth of the day can be felt just by looking at this painting, and the detail of the hummingbird is again expertly painted by Peter’s trained hand.” As Barbara continues to discuss the new artwork for this upcoming show, she adds, “another ‘something for everyone’ moment occurred to me when I saw for the first time a painting showing a single wooden boat heading out on a foggy morning. I could almost hear the low rumble sound of the engine and almost feel the misty air as I viewed the boat gliding across the water. Also there is an oil that Peter painted that is both a still life and a lake scene in one. It is totally unique and is both formal and informal, delicate and massive, light and dark, colorful and neutral. The viewer is bound to find something of interest

in this piece.” She continues, “but the most interesting painting that Peter crafted for this show is a scene of a lady in a period bathing costume looking out to the water and seeing…...well, you will just have to come take a look for yourself.” Since 1994, Peter Ferber has painted the official poster for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show, which also come as highly collectible artist proofs. Peter has exhibited in over 50 shows in New England and the Midwest. Well over 100 reproductions of his work have been made, including over 70 limited edition prints. His illustrations have appeared in national magazines, including Yankee, Antiques and Connoisseur, and a number of books including a retrospective of the poetry and prose of Doris Peel, entitled Journey to a New Day, and a children’s book written by his wife, Jeannie Ferber, entitled The Tails of Quince and Flute in Semer Wood. The artwork will continue to be displayed through August 16 or as long as available. The Art Place is the exclusive gallery for Peter Ferber’s original artwork, and produces many of his limited edition prints. The Art Place is located at 9 North Main Street, downtown Wolfeboro, NH and is open year round and daily all summer. For more information, please call 603 569-6159. or toll free 866 569-6159.

Peter Ferber Gallery Show Summer 2014 At The Art Place In Wolfeboro On Saturday, August 2, The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro will hold its semi-annual Peter Ferber Gallery Show featuring local well-known artist Peter Ferber’s collection of new original paintings. The unveiling and artist’s reception will commence at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome to come and meet the artist. In describing the subject matter and feelings that Peter Ferber has for the new collection of original artwork for his upcoming show, Peter states, “though I always look to the same subjects for inspiration, it’s exciting to see the variety of images that end up coming together in a show. While I’m more often drawn to the tranquil character of the area, I finally took on a busy summer scene looking out over docks full of boats from Cate Park in Wolfeboro. It’s a favorite spot, but hard to pull to-

“Morning Wake” by Peter Ferber. The New Hampshire artist will be unveiling his new works on Saturday, August 2nd at The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro beginning at 9:30am. gether in one painting, with so much going on. The afternoon light sparkling on the water and leaving a dappled pattern across

the grass somehow served to unify it in my eye. By melding three slightly different perspectives, I was able to incorporate the

bandstand, Dockside Restaurant, and the view out past the Barndoor Islands to the Belknap Mountains. In between there’s the

Mount, the Millie B, cars with kayaks, dogs, ducks, and ice cream cones!” Peter continues, “this new collection reaches beyond summer into the fall and winter seasons. Color schemes range from the vivid, crisp ones inspired by those “perfect New Hampshire days”, to the soft subtly of a fogged-shrouded morning, to warm earth tones that deviate from the literal and add richness to an otherwise ordinary view. For the first time since art class, I’ve done a still life with roses (while still managing to work in boats and a lake view!) Continuing in the floral vein, another painting uses a hanging petunia as the context for a hummingbird I wanted to render. For the wooden boat enthusiast, there’s an “outtake” image from my work on this year’s antique boat poster. And golfers See FERBER on 42
