If you’ve driven Route 25 in Tamworth, you may have noticed a large construction project going on. Welcome to “Club Motorsports” a different kind of country club. courtesy Photo

Club Motorsports A Turn For The Better by David Colby Contributing Writer

Have you wondered about the construction site on Route 25 in Tamworth, just a couple of miles west of Route 16? “Caution: Trucks Entering” the signs say. Just what is going on there, and what about the big

sign that says “Club Motorsports”? According to developers, it will be like a country club, sort of. It will have manicured lawns, beautiful grounds and gorgeous scenery. It will be a fun place for like-minded souls. It will have a swimming pool,

a “grill” and an exercise room. It will be a private club, with all the amenities that a gentlewoman or gentleman’s club provides. Yes, it will be a bit like a country club. But in every sense it will give new meaning to the word “driver”.

Instead of fairways it will have straightaways. Instead of teeing off, members will take off, down a world- class 2.5 mile road course. Think Lime Rock Park or Watkins Glen or Laguna Seca. It is called Club MotorSee colby on 31

Bear Baiting

$AVE UP TO 50% SAVE ON LOCAL AREA BUSINESSES... RESTAURANTS HEALTH & BEAUTY ATTRACTIONS RETAIL, SPAS & MORE!!!

To The Editor: In the last number of months Andrew Timmins, bear biologist for the N.H. Dept. of Fish and Game has put out press release’s on bear feeding across the state and that it is a selfish act, and that intentional feeding puts the bear in harms way. That it is in violation to feed bears with up to a $ 1000. fine. That the citizens are “ loving the animals to death”. A fed bear is a dead bear has been the battle cry with F&G for the last 10 years, pointing the finger at the citizens of the state for habituating our bear population. In 2006 F&G circumvent the legislative process of our government and went to JLCAR ( joint legislative committee on administrative rules ) and regulated the people of the state with F&G regulation FIS:310.01 the intentional feeding of bears. First let me state this, F&G’s responsibility is to safeguard our natural resources with hunting, fishing and trapping regulations, this doesn’t give them the authority to regulate the citizens of the state and that is exactly what they have been doing. Second JLCAR is not the forth form of government. Mr. Timmins wants you to clean up your act by taking down your bird feeders, put up electric fencing around chickens, put grain and garbage in secure containers and just stop luring bears with hand outs. This all seems reasonable for responsible people to do and its not much to ask. Mr Timmins wants you

Our Story

to believe that the dept. is concerned about mothers with cubs being killed over all this. What Mr, Timmins has left out in his press release’s is the fact that bear baiting as sport has been going on and on and on. This is the rest of the story. For the 2005-2013 hunting seasons, 8878 free bait permits for bear, 3987 free bait permits for deer (2008-2013 ) and 2181 free bait permits for other species ( 2008-2013 ) have been handed out by the Dept of F&G.That adds up to 15,046 permits issued with two sites per permit, equaling 30,092 bait sites set up in N.H. in the last nine years. This is a low number, a permit is not required to bait on your own land if the intent is to kill the animal. Be rest assured that feeding on your own land is against the law if the intent is observation. Habituating wildlife to bait sites is not a sport, it is not hunting, it is called shopping. Mr. Timmins is right on when he states that habituated to human environments and dependent on human-related foods has severe and often fatal negative effects on the animal. His assessment that a “fed bear is a dead bear” campaign is finger pointing in the wrong direction. From 2005-2013, 2454 bears have been killed with baiting, 409 were cubs, 216 were lactating females. Why is there no concern when so called hunting regulations allow for killing cubs and their mothers? The answer is PAY DAY.

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

The number of bears killed because of intentional feeding is non-existent in that time frame. The Dept needs a name change, perhaps the Dep. of “ Do As I Say Not As I Do” would be more appropriate. Mr. Timmins before you go on telling the citizens of the state to clean up their act the time has come for the dept to clean up theirs. The Dept. of F&G circumvented the system of government on the people, perhaps it is time for the Governor to execute an executive order to end baiting of bear and deer in this state. The Governor has that power. Eric Rottenecker, Bristol, NH.

Illegals Benefit Special Interests To the Editor: Is illegal immigration good for our nation? No. About 21.5 million (about 9.5 million unemployed and 12 million labor force dropouts who couldn’t find jobs) more Americans could be employed if there were available jobs. Millions of illegal aliens take jobs that unemployed Americans could take. Most illegals are relatively uneducated and unskilled and so they join the labor pool of uneducated and unskilled Americans which already has our highest unemployment rate (almost 10%). Increasing the number of people looking for fewer jobs allows employers to pay lower wages See mail boat on 7

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Poll Position

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

As I continue on my quest to be the first governor ever in the history of New Hampshire to be elected running under The Flatlander Ticket, I have come to realize the importance of poll numbers and what they tell me. A lot of people think that polls really don’t mean much, what really counts is what people do once they are in the voting booth, as long as it is related to actually voting. Other folks think that polls are the best indicator of how an election will play out or how the country really does feel about an issue. I agree with both sides of the argument. Of course, running for office, you would expect that I would always agree with both sides of an argument depending on which group of voters I am talking with because that’s what we politicians do. That’s our job and most of us do it very well. Still, in this case I really do agree with both sides. I feel that sometimes polls don’t matter and other times they do. It simply depends on the poll itself. Some polls are made up by partisan sympathizers and can be loaded so as to guarantee a result for their candidate while others are done by independent groups that ask honestly worded ques-

tions about important issues that really give a true reading of the pulse of what the voter really feels. I always prefer the former. Let’s face it, without polls worded in a twisted way to make me look good, I’d never really have a shot at winning. However, even twisted, obviously biased poll questions can take a person on the street by surprise and they still might not give the answer that the poll taker is hoping for. The element of surprise can do that. So, this week, so you won’t get caught by surprise, I am providing some of the poll questions my team will be asking to white males, between 5’8’ and 6’2’ tall, weighing between 200250 in order to get a true political reading of what all the people in New Hampshire think about how I would perform as governor. One question we have decided upon is “Which man would you rather see as governor, Brendan Smith or Maggie Hassan?” We do predict that in this poll I should easily win with about a 60/40 majority. We will also be asking: “Brendan Smith would like to give everyone a thousand dollars, Maggie Hassan has bags of pre-printed, worthless casino chips she’d like to give away. Which one do you think has the better idea?” Assuming we do come out on top of this poll we will present it to the public as “Poll shows that more people think Brendan Smith will provide them with better financial opportunities than Hassan.” It really is all about the spin. Before we ask some of these questions we will

warm up people with a few multiple choice ones just to get them in the mood. Research has found that people feel more involved if they are presented with questions where they don’t have to think up the answer on their own and can just pick from a pre-determined list. I guess it makes them feel a bit like politicians themselves. One of our pollsters might stop you and ask you something like: “What do you think is the most pressing issue facing New Hampshire today? Is it A - The economy. B - The environment. C -Taxes D - Gluten. Or maybe “How much education have you had? A -High School. B - College C - Grad School. D - I would have gotten a lot further but I did lousy on the multiple choice questions on my SATs. Please don’t worry about how you answer these questions. It is just done to give you a false illusion that the rest of the questions asked will be completely on the level. We also plan to conduct a few of these polls over the telephone. We do have a complete list of registered voters as well as what time they usually eat dinner so we can call them then. This is new territory this year in my run for governor and my campaign team (thanks Vinnie) and I are looking forward to the results of these polls. We hope to prove that there is really only one candidate in this race who is me.

‘A Hell Of A Foray’ If an Israeli highlevel official were caught on a hot mic candidly commenting on Secby Rich Lowry retary of Syndicated Columnist State John Kerry’s illfated act of Israel-Hamas peacemaking, he might call it “a hell of a diplomatic foray.” Kerry was caught sarcastically describing the Israeli offensive into Gaza as “a hell of a pinpoint operation” during his round of Sunday-show interviews two weeks ago, before telling his aide over the phone, “We’ve got to get over there,” and “It’s crazy to be sitting around.” Kerry’s belief in himself as the Indispensable Man is touchingly quaint. His conception of the U.S. secretary of state is apparently frozen in a time when it was a position of unparalleled power and respect. Those days are gone. Or as President Barack Obama might quip, to paraphrase his

put-down of Mitt Romney’s foreign-policy views during one of the 2012 presidential debates, “John, the 1980s want their secretary of state back.” After six years of resetting, leading from behind, ending wars, nation building at home and pivoting to Asia, the U.S. has reduced itself to a husk of its former influence. When Kerry showed up in Cairo to meet with the president of Egypt, he was wanded by the guards, as if he had just wandered in from the airport security line. Kerry underlined his dubious relevance by his inability to secure a cease-fire, and his dubious wisdom by making it his overarching goal. At this point, after Israel has committed itself on the ground, the U.S. should be seeking to give it the time it needs to do as much damage as possible to Hamas’ military infrastructure, instead of effectively bailing out the terror group. By the time Kerry returned home, he had been showered with so much criticism by the Israelis that the U.S. government See lowry on 38

Want a Real Anti-Poverty Plan? Stop Amnesty! It is now all the fashionable rage in Washington, D.C., to proclaim solidarity with America’s working poor in front of by Michelle Malkin the cameras Syndicated Columnist -- while stabbing them in the back behind closed doors. Privileged Illinois Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and others have taken to Twitter, posting photos of themselves eating tuna sandwiches and buying Ramen noodles to show how much they empathize with minimum-wage workers. On the other side of the aisle, GOP Rep. Paul Ryan has wrapped himself in a cloak of compassion, putting a cheesy Taylor Swift hand heart around conservatism by proposing government “life coaches” for those in poverty. Message: They care! Reality: They fake. The cognitive dissonance on Capitol Hill is so thick you need a V8-powered chainsaw to slice it. While cynical politicians prattle on about protecting the American Dream, they’re working together to destroy it. If these elected officials care so much about reducing poverty, why are they working so hard to import more of it from around the world? Leaders in both political parties have thrown struggling Americans under the bus to feed the cheap illegal alien labor machine. The working poor are the biggest losers in D.C.’s amnesty game. U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner Peter Kirsanow has been a lonely voice warning about the impact of mass illegal immigration and perpetual amnesty on

low-income black Americans. “The country’s economic woes have disproportionately harmed African-Americans, especially those with little education,” he warned this spring. “The economy has a glut of low-skilled workers, not a shortage,” which is driving wages down. Stagnant wages and depressed economic growth affect working poor Americans of all colors, while illegal alien amnesty beneficiaries cash in. Steve Camarota and Karen Ziegler of the Center for Immigration Studies reported last month that “since 2000, all of the net gain in the number of working-age (16 to 65) people holding a job has gone to immigrants (legal and illegal). This is remarkable given that nativeborn Americans accounted for two-thirds of the growth in the total working-age population. Though there has been some recovery from the Great Recession, there were still fewer working-age natives holding a job in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000, while the number of immigrants with a job was 5.7 million above the 2000 level.” President Obama has already granted administrative amnesty to an estimated two million illegal aliens and renewed “temporary” work permits for 520,000. The administration is planning an expansion that would grant amnesties to at least six million more lawbreakers. Where is the opposition? Appeasement Republicans refuse to support Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s on-target proposal to repeal Obama’s “DREAM” magnet and Alabama GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions’ clarion call to block any more executive amnesties as a precondition to border bill negotiations. Cease the Cease-Fires Many years ago, on my first trip around the world, I was struck by how the children in the Middle East -- Arab and Israeli alike -were among by Thomas Sowell t h e n i c e s t Syndicated Columnist looking little children I had seen anywhere. It was painful to think that they were going to grow up killing each other. But that is exactly what happened. It is understandable that today many people in many lands just want the fighting between the Israelis and the Palestinians to stop. Calls for a cease-fire are ringing out from the United Nations and from Washington, as well as from ordinary people in many places around the world. According to the New York Times, Secretary of State John Kerry is hoping for a cease-fire to “open the door to Israeli and Palestinian negotiations for a long-term solution.” President Obama has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to have an “immediate, unconditional humanitarian cease-fire” -- again, with the idea of pursuing some long-lasting agreement. If this was the first outbreak of violence between the Palestinians and the Israelis, such hopes might make sense. But where have the U.N., Kerry and Obama been during all these decades of endlessly

repeated Middle East carnage? The Middle East must lead the world in cease-fires. If cease-fires were the road to peace, the Middle East would easily be the most peaceful place on the planet. “Cease-fire” and “negotiations” are magic words to “the international community.” But just what do cease-fires actually accomplish? In the short run, they save some lives. But in the long run they cost far more lives, by lowering the cost of aggression. At one time, launching a military attack on another nation risked not only retaliation but annihilation. When Carthage attacked Rome, that was the end of Carthage. But when Hamas or some other terrorist group launches an attack on Israel, they know in advance that whatever Israel does in response will be limited by calls for a cease-fire, backed by political and economic pressures from the United States. It is not at all clear what Israel’s critics can rationally expect the Israelis to do when they are attacked. Suffer in silence? Surrender? Flee the Middle East? Or - most unrealistic of all fight a “nice” war, with no civilian casualties? General William T. Sherman said it all, 150 years ago: “War is hell.” If you want to minimize civilian casualties, then minimize the dangers of war, by no longer coming to the rescue of those who start wars. Israel was attacked, not only by

vast numbers of rockets but was also invaded -- underground -- by mazes of tunnels. There is something grotesque about people living thousands of miles away, in safety and comfort, loftily second-guessing and trying to micro-manage what the Israelis are doing in a matter of life and death. Such self-indulgences are a danger, not simply to Israel, but to the whole Western world, for it betrays a lack of realism that shows in everything from the current disastrous consequences of our policies in Egypt, Libya and Iraq to future catastrophes from a nuclear-armed Iran. Those who say that we can contain a nuclear Iran, as we contained a nuclear Soviet Union, are acting as if they are discussing abstract people in an abstract world. Whatever the Soviets were, they were not suicidal fanatics, ready to see their own cities destroyed in order to destroy ours. mail boat from 4

which makes our working poor even poorer. Does it help a nation to have lots of people on unemployment, welfare, food stamps, etc.? No. Poor people are supported by the people who do earn money. Many taxpayers struggle financially because of low wages, reduced working hours, and high prices (increased by government requirements and demand from taxpayer supported unemployment and welfare recipients). It’s best for a nation, and its people can prosper if everyone has a job that provides goods and services that people and businesses need, want, and can afford. A nation, its leaders, and its laws lose respect when politicians and bureaucrats refuse to enforce our immigration laws that protect our citizens and our sovereignty. Our nation has stringent requirements for immigrating legally, e.g., health, skills, and financial independence, to ensure that immigrants contribute to our country and don’t harm or burden others. Is it fair to the millions of legal immigrants and foreigners trying to come here legally that illegal aliens are rewarded with benefits and allowed to stay? No.

As for the ever-elusive “solution” to the Arab-Israeli conflicts in the Middle East, there is nothing faintly resembling a solution anywhere on the horizon. Nor is it hard to see why. Even if the Israelis were all saints -- and sainthood is not common in any branch of the human race -- the cold fact is that they are far more advanced than their neighbors, and groups that cannot tolerate even subordinate Christian minorities can hardly be expected to tolerate an independent, and more advanced, Jewish state that is a daily rebuke to their egos. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www.tsowell.com. To find out more about Thomas Sowell and read features by other Creators Syndicate columnists and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate Web page at www.creators. com. Illegal aliens may bring diseases that spread to others and require costly treatments. Illegal aliens burden taxpayers by obtaining benefits and services far in excess to the taxes they pay. A disproportionate number of illegal aliens commit crimes and accidents that hurt legal residents, burden our justice system, and increase taxes. If unrestricted immigration were good for our nation, then why is it illegal? Unrestricted immigration is illegal because it is bad for our nation and for our citizens, because the American people know that it is bad, and because politicians know that the American people are already angry at politicians for not enforcing our laws. Nevertheless, Washington politicians tolerate, and even seem to encourage, illegal immigration. Why? Because illegal immigration benefits some powerful special interests which richly reward the politicians who allow it. This November we have the chance to replace New Hampshire’s two Congresswomen and Senator Shaheen who put their own interests and those of special interests and illegal aliens above what is best for the American people. Covered Bridges Program At Lake Winni Museum On Wednesday, August 13th at 7 p.m. the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society will present the program “Covered Bridges of New Hampshire”, Featuring Glenn Knoblock. Often viewed as quaint relics of a simpler past, they were technological marvels of their day. I It may be native ingenuity and NH’s woodworking tradition that account for the fact that a number of nationallynoted covered bridge truss designers were NH natives. This program takes place in the new meeting room at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in the Weirs next door to the Funspot Family Entertainment Center. Admission is $5 but is free for members of the Historical Society. Seating is limited so it is requested that you RSVP in advance to 603-366-5950. — OFF THE SHELF — Spending The Summer With Billy by Debby Montague Book Reviewer

The Rest Is Silence, James R. Benn, Soho Crime, September 2, 2014

“I was a captain now, and I saw things entirely differently than when I first arrived. I kind of missed the old me.” —Captain Billy Boyle I’ve been spending the summer with Captain Billy Boyle, special investigator for Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, and it’s been time well-spent. I went back to my first meeting with Billy in James R. Benn’s Billy Boyle (Soho 2006) and re-read, so to speak, the entire series via Audible.com leading up to the ninth installment, The Rest Is Silence. It’s been a great summer. In The Rest Is Silence it’s April 1944 and the invasion of Europe is looming. Troops are training in the south of England and Billy is feeling just a bit miffed to be on the sidelines. Colonel Sam Harding of G2 has sent Billy to the southeast coast of England to discover what he can about a body that’s washed ashore. With the invasion imminent the brass is nervous that the body could be that of a German spy. Viewing a waterlogged body is bad, but Billy and his friend, Kaz, Lieutenant Piotr Augustus Kazimierz, are about to experience worse on the Channel shores. The day after Billy inspects

the body he and Kaz are sent to Slapton Sands to be part of a security force for a live-fire exercise that turns into a disaster when miscommunications bring about the deaths of Allied forces by friendly fire. Even worse, a few days later German Eboats attack the convoy that was rehearsing for the invasion. Operation Tiger and

his part in it should be more than enough for Billy to deal with, but Billy is a multitasker long before that term is popular. While staying at the home of a university friend of Kaz, Billy is also caught up in the family’s secrets, antipathies, and untimely deaths. Everything about this particular entry in the Billy Boyle series and the series in general makes for great reading. As in his previous books Benn centers his plot around an esoteric historical event in this case Operation Tiger. Benn

does his research and it shows in the quality of his writing. The scenes are intense, the dialogue powerful and genuine. There are other gems such as the appearance of famous personalities that Benn fits seamlessly into the plot, for instance Yogi Berra instructing Billy on the proper wearing of a life belt. (“Getting’ killed would make our job a lot harder.”) Billy even gets an assist from a famous mystery writer when he’s trying to sort out the secrets at Ashcroft House. Benn doesn’t leave out the humor either as when Lady Pemberton razzes Billy for his Boston accent: “Ah, Boston. And there I thought you had a speech impediment. Irish?” For me the best part of James R. Benn’s Billy Boyle mysteries is Billy himself. He’s as authentic a character as Rex Stout’s Archie Goodwin. Over the two years since Billy has been in the U.S. Army he has matured from the scared but brash kid who thought he’d be sitting out the war at a desk in Washington to an experienced soldier and investigator involved not only in unobtrusively solving murders that could interfere with the war effort, but also on the battlefield, behind enemy lines, and in cahoots with Britain’s MI5. He’s seen friends die and get wounded. He’s questioned values he grew up See montague on 36

As it turns out, one of Live and Let Live Farm’s rescues, a thoroughbred named Goldie, is the great granddaughter of that legendary triple-crown winner. Born in Kentucky, she raced at many of the big tracks—Aqueduct, Belmont, Suffolk Downs,

Somehow, she ended up on a small horse farm in Pepperell, MA, emaciated and in need of urgent hoof care and surgery. The details are a bit murky, and ultimately unimportant. It got rather ugly for some involved in the matter. What is important is that Goldie was rescued and a short time later, two other horses, Ella and Spirit, were rescued from that farm about three years ago, in a rescue coordinated by Pepperell Animal Control and Live and Let Live Farm for Ella and Spirit. Ella and Spirit came directly to Live

and Let Live, but Goldie, whose track name was Banker’s Heiress, went to Whishmaker Stables, a horse farm in Rollinsford, NH where she was fostered. There she was provided vitamins, blood builders and a regular diet. She also had some rather expensive surgery, for which donations and

by Steve White Contributing Writer

The cardinal is relatively new to this area of New England. Prior to the popularity of backyard bird feeding, the northern most boundary of this brilliant red bird was the Connecticut and Rhode Island regions. As more homeowners enjoyed this hobby of feeding wild birds in the last two decades, attracting the cardinal has almost become an obsession. The chase was on. Just how do you keep this majestic bird in your area year round? Attracting cardinals to your backyard is not a difficult task if you have the right habitat to start with. Unfortunately, most backyards have eliminated the environment necessary for maintaining nesting cardinals. Cardinals are basically ground birds. They enjoy the comfort and safety that natural cover provides. Brambles, briar patches, and thickets are standard cardinal territory. You may witness cardinals singing from the tallest branches of trees, but for nesting purposes, this species prefers the lower levels of your area. Many people choose not to have these natural plantings in their backyard and may have a difficult, if not impossible, task of attracting northern cardinals. Nesting birds are feeding birds. The cardinal is very aggressive in defending its territory from other birds. They are extremely loyal as well. It’s one of the few species of wild birds that allow the offspring to stay for

the first year after hatching. It is not uncommon to witness large flocks of cardinals during the winter months as they forage for food. Large, airy bushes, like the rhododendrons, serve well as cardinal habitat. You can create your own cardinal friendly environment using a simple brush pile. Choose a suitable area at the edge of your property and commence the process of gathering large tree branches that have fallen to the ground in neighboring woods. Place these loose branches on top of one another until you have a rudimentary brush pile approximately 6 feet wide at the bottom and 4-5 feet tall. Do not compress this new site and leave plenty of airy, open areas for the cardinals to fly into. Viola, instant cardinal habitat! Cardinals prefer bird feeders that imitate their natural feeding area, the ground. These birds are not clingers, like chickadees or finches. Perches are very difficult for large birds to use for feeding purposes. Traditional style tube feeders are not cardi-

nal friendly. Consider adding a tray on the bottom so that cardinals will feel comfortable during feeding. Properly designed hoppers can be the most optimized solution to attract feeding cardinals to your yard. Open tray feeders are another solution. Sunflower and safflower seeds are the two favorite ingredients in the eastern region of the United States for attracting northern cardinals. Of course, water is also a key element to serve in order to

DEAR TIM: I’ve had it with power outages here at my home, and I’ve decided to get an electric generator. I’ve got several complicating issues. For starters, my budget is tight. Second, I want this generator to be multi-purpose and want to take it on family picnics and camping trips. The generator needs to be quiet. What are my options? Can I satisfy all of my wishes and have clean power that won’t hurt my sensitive electronic devices? --Kathleen K., Boulder, Colorado DEAR KATHLEEN: I’ve got great news for you. You can get a new portable generator that will satisfy all your requirements! What’s more, if you lug in multiple bags of groceries on a routine basis, I believe you’ll be able to carry one of the generators a short distance with only moderate effort on your part. As with many things, advancements in technology and micro computers have allowed manufacturers to produce small generators that produce stable and clean alternating current using an inverter inside the machine. This easy-to-carry electric generator can get you out of a bind in a power outage or make a camping trip or picnic more enjoyable. portable generators have an onboard computer that converts the direct current from the generator to a very stable alternating current that will not harm your sensitive electronics and appliances. I know this for a fact because in the past two weeks I tested two different portable generators using an oscilloscope to measure the quality of the electricity being produced by the generators. Guess what. Both machines created a more perfect sine wave on the scope than the electricity coming into my home from my local utility! Here’s the scoop on the portable generators. Size does matter. The bigger

the generator, and all its combined parts, the more power it can produce. If you want portability, meaning a generator you can carry like a five-gallon pail of drywall compound, then you sacrifice total power output. The generators I tested weigh about the same as a pail of drywall compound and produce 2,000 watts of power. That may seem like a lot of power, but it’s not when you think about the giant standby generator I have next to my garage. This generator comes on automatically if the power fails at my house and will produce 17,000 watts. You can buy generators that produce far more power See buiilder on 40

The process is half the cost of new cabinets with less mess, waste and disruption. For ten years, Clairmont Dumont has been in the business of bringing people a very affordable alternative to what can often be the overwhelming expense of installing brand new cabinets and countertops. “I offer alternatives that can be as low as thirty-

five percent of the cost of replacing cabinets, said Dumont. Using the finest in laminates and custom-made doors, the look of old cabinets can be totally updated to the customer’s specifications without a complete overhaul of the kitchen. “Lots of people have

nice cabinets on the inside and all they really want to do is change the outside, said Dumont. “It’s very labor intensive and expensive to get new cabinets. With refacing, Dumont will do a quick measure of the cabinet space and then will order the door See dumont on 16

installed. The result is kitchen cabinets at less than half the cost of new and a lot less mess and disruption. “During refacing its also a great time to add an extra cabinet or more and get a perfect exterior match, said Dumont. “I’ll help redesign for convenience and in maximizing storage space. One great example of this is a makeover of a trash bin at a recent job site. What was once a two step process of pulling out the door and then the bin was reengineered by Dumont so it could all be done in one step. Dumont is also an expert at replacing your old countertops with High Definition laminates by Wilsonart that can give the look of marble, granite and stone without the price.

“The countertops have quarter-inch beveled edges to make them seamless, said Dumont. Dumont, who was a union carpenter and travelled back and forth to Boston to work for years, came upon the process of refacing in 2005. Starting his own business, keeping himself clos-

er to home and working for himself has proven to be the right move as he has now hundreds of successful refacing jobs and satisfied clients behind him. “It’s been a pleasure working with Clairmont, said a customer at a recent Gilford job site. “He is always professional, on time, courteous and thoroughly cleans up the job site. We are extremely pleased with his work. If you are interested in more information or a free estimate, you can contact Dumont Cabinet Refacing and Counter Tops at 603-279-6555.

ON “HAZING Alert readers will recall a column in this space last October regarding Hanover High School forfeiting its Homecoming Day football game to Kearsage Regional High School to punish Hanover gridsters who’d earlier required new members of the team to perform skits aimed at “roasting veteran players. The skits reportedly “objectified females and so the Hanover players were punished by having their football taken away from them for a week. Skits, roasts, and hazing have long been part of sports culture. As a rite of passage, rookies typically endure certain initiation procedures, such as carrying equipment or singing songs at preseason team gatherings. Many moons ago, my high school had Freshman Initiation Day, which included good-natured activities such as mandatory wearing of beanie caps. The day culminated with a “Freshman Auction which raised money for the class treasury by selling class members to the highest bidder. I recall being “sold for a quarter. Lest readers worry about my self-esteem, I would point out that twenty-five cents was a lot of money back in ’69! Freshman Auctions and Initiations are unthinkable in today’s world, of course. But the innate desire to require newcomers to organizations to “prove themselves has always remained with us. And stories regularly appear

Some of it is silly shenanigans, maybe. All of it was, by many accounts, the OSU marching band way. Fun. But beneath the high jinks that investigators found were partand-parcel of being a band member runs a darker undercurrent that surfaced in serious ways. OSU commenced a formal investigation after a complaint from a band member’s mother. Investigators found that many dubious traditions have been around for decades, with few if any complaints. Students often tolerated discomfort with certain traditions in exchange for being part of a prestigious group known as “The Best Damn Band in the Land (TBDBITL). Students swore to keep its traditions secret. Following the investigation, OSU band director Jonathan Waters was fired. Jane Cormier for Dist. 16 - It Ain’t “Hatin” -Broken Promises In NH it doesn’t take much to engage 2 or 10 people in a political discussion, and that is good! by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Trying to communicate with a Liberal is a waste of time. Many times having a healthy discussion between 2 or 10 common sense, principled conservatives, can be a very dangerous place to be. Being the senior member (most of the time) and volunteering advice or actual “game experience” one would think the 53 years and younger would be grateful for my knowledge. Not always, too many who believe if they vote for the republican incumbents that things will get better. That does not happen. Check the number of terms congressman and senators have “held their seat”. The “Party Establishment” on both parties protect these useless incumbents, which means another term where nothing gets better. National Debt goes up, more freedom lost and more welfare or questionable disabilities. What of the incumbent who knows he, CANNOT VOTE FOR Right to Work because my spouse and I are Union members. I cannot vote for any type of parents’ education choice for their child because my spouse is in education (receiving a government check). Belknap County has lost a Constitutionalist common sense fiscal NH House member. There is good news! My friend Jane Cormier is in a primary for the Republican Senate Dist. 16 primary for Bow, Candia, Dunbarton, Hooksett, and

Manchester Wards 1,2 and 12. I can tell you from someone keeping an eye on the truth in Belknap County, Jane Cormier will tell you the truth and work hard for the people of District 16. How will the GOP establishment accept this? Candidate Jane Cormier questions some of his claims, asking how voting for a 23% increase in the gas tax equals “no NEW taxes’’? How voting for adopting expanded Medicaid is the equivalent of “stopping Obamacare”? In addition, Boutin calls himself a defender of the second amendment. How does voting to defeat constitutional carry translate to being a “strong supporter of second amendment rights”? Jane Cormier is asking these and other questions, she knows the answers. “I know David Boutin voted to raise the gas tax hurting every NH citizen and business. David Boutin voted to expand Medicaid, the centerpiece of ObamaCare, and that NH taxpayers will get to pick up the $200+ million tab. David Boutin voted to kill a bill giving the legislature the right to stop the federal intrusion of Common Core in NH, blatantly ignoring the concerns of parents and taxpayers. David Boutin voted against Constitutional Carry, which is hardly defending 2nd Amendment rights. His most recent GO-NH score was a C, and the NH Firearms Coalition even called him a “promise breaker” in their last report card.” Rep. Cormier: “I know the answers to these questions and I believe the voters should know, as well. Wishing something is true doesn’t make it so. Constituents deserve better.” ******** “The NH GOP Establishment” have chosen

their candidate to win the GOP U.S. Senate Primary; Scott Brown. You are probably as surprised as I am. Gee, it was just about 7 weeks ago that RINO Thad Cochran, with the help of GOP asking Democrats to vote in the primary election to nominate RINO Cochran – and they did! Chris McDaniel ran a great campaign. He would have won, but the leaders of Mississippi and D.C. GOP went the extra mile for the RINO. How many terms/years have Thad, Mitch, and McCain served in Washington? Hundred Plus years between them? Let’s do some research: http://www.nytimes. com/2014/07/17/upshot/money-and-namesbehind-ads-for-thadcochran-are-revealed. html?_r=0 Michael Bloomberg, Haley Barbour, and others, including American Crossroads. IF you are a principled conservative, you will not be pleased! ******** BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA to Republicans: “Stop being mad all the time. Stop just hatin’ all the time. Let’s get some work done.” And the Liberal Loons applaud. I believe the man doing the “hatin”is you Barack. Question: BHO, is your plan to fix everything you have done to ruin OUR country? Quit stomping your feet, and have a wonderful 16 day paid vacation in that $12 million dollar house at Martha’s Vineyard. I bet that the 1% you talk about does not own a house worth $12 million. Could we just take a look at the real B. Hussein Obama? Obama said he would have the most transparent administration ever! BHO said IF YOU want to keep doctor, See advocates on 38

Hope’s newest solo album, “For All We Knowâ€? is a Jazz album that has received rave reviews. It’s a smooth, sultry, shill album, reminiscent of the style of Tony Bennett with Bill Evans. A touch of soul, croon, and jazz. This album has a new take on some classic tunes by greats such as Tony Bennett, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Donny Hathaway just

to name a few. “For All We Know is a sweet blend of styles in a minimalistic, yet inspiring, soulful and heartfelt formula of just voice, and piano. The performance is sponsored by Fidelity Investments along with Steve and Carol Bush of Maxfield Real Estate. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Thanks to all who have contributed to this organization, it is able to provide high quality musical performances at reasonable prices with tickets ranging from $20.00 to $80.00. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, by calling 603-5697710, or online at www. greatwaters.org.

Summer Fun! The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

Gallagher’s Farewell Show Will Be A Smash At 7:30 on Saturday, August 9th, The Flying Monkey in Plymouth will host comedian Gallagher for the last time. Rolling stone calls the famous watermelon smasher “One of the greatest comics of all time. He will be hanging up his “sledge-o-matic after this farewell tour, which marks the end of a nearly 40 year career. Tickets for this performance start at $29. Sure, he’s the famous watermelon smasher. He’s been pulverizing all manner of produce on stage with a sledgehammer, which he calls his “Sledge-O-Matic, for more than 30 years. But his true genius lies in his stand up. Before all the recent hubbub, millions of comedy fans were in love with his razor sharp observations, hilarious dead-on insights, and incredibly creative wordplay. He pioneered the television stand-up comedy special, racking up 14 Showtime specials during the height of his career in the 80s. Kind of a big deal. Gallagher also captured headlines as a candidate for governor in the freewheeling 2003 California recall election. In one of his campaign appearances, he lamented the state of the nation’s collective IQ. “Don’t you wish there were a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence? he asked. “There’s one marked ‘brightness,’ but it doesn’t work. Gallagher’s stage show has evolved over the years, and he now interacts more with his audiences. People from the crowd are often invited up on stage to share in the fun. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is Gallagher’s reputation as an audience-friendly performer who genuinely enjoys his gigs. He always takes extra time to sign

How’s The Fishing? Reports From NH Fish and Game LAKES REGION Central New Hampshire and the Lakes Region have just experienced near tropical rainstorms! I received 3.5 inches of rain in the last two days! My dock is ready to disappear underwater! What does this mean for our lake and stream habitats? Water temperatures are warm, 75 degrees in the big lakes, and a tad less in streams and rivers with good riparian buffer zones. Obviously, literally tons of food and debris have entered these systems. Water becomes cloudy in streams, less so in lakes. Coldwater species in our big lakes (rainbow trout and salmon) have retreated to an area just below the thermocline, while lake trout, the “denizens of the deep” are near bottom. Rainbow smelt (young-ofthe-year) are growing larger, to the point where they become available forage for the aforementioned species. Smelt migrate up in the water column at dusk, and continue this migration until they begin to enter the upper reaches of the

thermocline, where they stop and feed on the rich abundance of zooplankton, which are, in turn, feeding on smaller plankton. This feeding behavior ends as dawn appears, and clouds of smelt descend to the depths of the lake to wait for the next round of feeding. This means that dawn and dusk time intervals could very well be the peak times for anglers to find salmon and trout in a feeding mode. On a recent trip on Lake Winnisquam with fishing buddies Marc Vigneault and Allen Leighton, we saw a mixed bag of lake trout and a real decent rainbow trout. John Viar had stocked some surplus rainbows, in several lakes, as surplus from our Warren Hatchery. These trout were primarily 3+ years in age, and upwards of 4 pounds. You guessed it, Allen was working a lead core line, with a Maynard’s Marvel when one of these trout hit! The look on his face was priceless! Allen’s trout was a superb female, 4 pounds, 22 inches long. Trout ponds in the White Mountains are holding up very well, as many of these

ponds have received surplus brook trout from our New Hampton Hatchery. Some of these brookies were in excess of two pounds, and

should support some great fishing, right through fall. Streams and rivers will take a week at least to drop down and become fishable. Try the upper Pemigewasset River in Woodstock and Campton, and lower reaches of the Mad River, as many fish planted upstream have found their way downstream to new reaches of stream. - Don Miller, Regional Fisheries Biologist SOUTHEAST NH/MERRIMACK VALLEY Despite air temperatures close to 90 degrees and surface water temperature pushing 80 degrees, we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of aggressive smallmouth found in the shallows at all times of the day. Perhaps dropping barometric pressure played a role in this, as a warm air mass was being pushed

out by a cold front, resulting in darkening skies and impending thunderstorms in the evening. Most fish were caught on surface poppers and wacky rigged soft plastics. Fish were most commonly found along expansive rocky outcroppings and within a larger tributary. This emphasizes the need for experimentation while fishing. Our catch rates would not have been nearly as high if we focused on the traditional deeper sections and drop-offs we normally find smallmouth bass in late July. While we anticipate several people are still actively fishing the area and hopefully doing well, we haven’t heard many reports from anglers. This is not out of the ordinary for this time of year. The only recent report I’ve received was regarding some anglers doing well at Pleasant Lake in Deerfield. These folks left the lake very

happy after catching several yearling rainbow trout and two larger brown trout, both over three pounds. – Ben Nugent, Regional Fisheries Biologist SEACOAST AREA The waters are teaming with baitfish. Atlantic herring are being caught on sabiki rigs in the Piscataqua River; mackerel and pollock were being caught at the mouth of the river this past weekend, while schools of silversides abound. Unfortunately the plentiful baitfish makes it a little more difficult for the striped bass angler to entice his prey. The Piscataqua River and Hampton Harbor and its tributaries are still fairly bountiful with schoolies, but the bigger fish are along the coast. There are reports that some of the mackerel have retreated to deeper waters, so if you aren’t having luck in the river, you may want to double up your efforts and do some groundfishing, as well. We have run into numerous people over the last few weeks that had luck with cod and occasionally a haddock inside the 3-mile line. I’ve gotten conflicting reports on squid; some say “everywhere,” some say “nowhere to be seen.” I would give it another shot before I count them out for the season; it’s early yet! It’s best to find a well-lit spot (bridge or dock) and go at night. The squid may be lurking just beyond the lighted area, so you may need to cast out your squid jig and jig it back in to find the area where the squid are hiding. If you aren’t having any immediate luck, try switching colors or weights of your jig. Changing the weight will alter its position in the water; you can try differing your jigging technique as well, or simply let it hang just off the bottom. Post some pictures on our Facebook page and let us know how you do! - Becky Heuss, Marine Biologist

sports and is billed as a members-only country club for performance cars and motorcycles. It is all of that and more. Club Motorsports is the brainchild of Dan Croteau and Dave Mirabassi, exemplars of the sport of performance and classic automobiles. The site occupies 252 acres of granite ridge, pine and hardwood forest and offers some of the best scenery in the foothills of the White Mountains. Scheduled to open officially in mid- 2015, Club Motorsports has been in development since 2003.

A full rendering of the Club Motorsports facility. Ten Years In The Making The original vision for the club was- and remains- to take advantage of the topography of the site to create a unique performance driving facility. Not everyone, however, agrees that development on th i s s c a l e was the right thing for a small town. After federal and state approvals were

secured, a group of concerned Tamworth citizen organized to stop development. Finding ambiguity in local wetlands protection ordinances, the group sued and development stalled. Both sides of the development question hold strong opinions, but in March 2013 a majority of Tamworth residents voted to clear the way and the project moved

forward. In August 2013 construction began in earnest and is expected to take approximately 18 months. Club Motorsports has a scheduled opening date of mid2015. The initial, or phase one plan lays out a 2.5 mile course with 15 turns and two major straightaways, one 2,000 feet and another 1,300 feet long. Taking advantage

Mitigating Environmental Impact Building Club Motorsports means moving earth, lots of it. And while plans call for moving 900,000 cubic yards of granite and other material, the site is designed to make minimal impact on wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas. Because developers seek to use topography to enhance the appeal of the club, what material must be excavated and moved will be ground and re-used for roadbeds and other construction needs. the club is in strict compliance with U.S. EPA State DES and other governing bodies’ rules and regulations. Economic Impact The cost to build a facility like Club Motorsports is significant. In addition to direct cost of construction, there are approximately 30 construction workers and allied trades people living in hotels and motels in and

around the Tamworth area. Most enjoy meals in local restaurants and nearly all buy groceries and gas in the local economy. When completed, Club Motorsports is expected to generate not-insignificant dollars in local tax revenue. Who Joins A Club Like This? formance-driving skills. A smaller, though no less competitive, 0.4 mile go-cart course is also being built on site. While mom or dad may be out challenging the road course, sons and daughters can start refining their skills on a slightly smaller scale. Owing to their popularity, the club plans to offer the go-cart track as a fund raising venue for local organizations. The entire facility is designed to be self-sus-

will also have access to club-owned cars of various lineage. Every member/driver will be evaluated by a professional instructor before being given access to the course. While the adrenaline rush may be part of the allure, driver safety will always be the mantra of the club directors, staff and instructors. Only drivers deemed course-qualified and safety conscious will be allowed to rev their engines and heartbeats at Club Motorsports. From the operation center, on-course performance will be monitored constantly. Cameras will record the entire course and using the familiar green-yellow-red light system, drivers will be kept current on track status. Analysis of the drivers’ performance will allow staff to men-

tor drivers. How a driver performs on-course and alone becomes fodder for after- analysis by trainers and coaches. Sort of like reviewing NFL game film, but- importantlywithout the hitting. With its obvious focus on safety and competence, and with a worldclass facility, future plans include a performance driving academy. Giving Back To The Community Club Motorsports is unique in the northeast. The Board of Directors plans to offer its facility for use by local and state police agencies as a performance-driving training aid. Because it is a “road course”, the turns and straightaways mimic conditions law enforcement faces during pursuit. Though already well-trained, the use of Club Motorsports

on the Hill, the staffs of Sens. McCain, Flake and Murkowski met privately and opposed any changes to Obama’s DREAM passes for illegals -- which makes them willing and suicidal accomplices in the perpetual Democratic voter recruitment drive. On the House side, GOP House Speaker John Boehner is also openly opposed to stopping the DREAM nightmare. There are no longer two separate parties in Washington. There’s just one big Amnesty Inc. conglomerate addicted to Big Business donations and Big Government grievance politics. The Obama White House needs to buy off Hispanic voters, keep immigration lawyers employed and secure a leftwing permanent ruling majority. Establishment Republicans need to pay

off the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, pander to minority lobbyists and curry favor with open-borders CEOS led by Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg. The real crisis is not at the border. It’s being fomented inside our nation’s capital. The “border crisis is a bipartisan D.C. catastrophe of craven politicians abandoning their constitutional duties to defend our sovereignty and put American workers first. was saying it could endanger our relationship. The question raised by Obama administration foreign policy again and again is, How can self-styled Smart Power be so dumb and toothless? For all of Kerry’s failings, he is a relative giant among a foreign-policy team composed largely of political hacks and post-American declinists. At least Kerry retains some of the old Democratic Party belief in America’s importance in the world. His condemnation of Syria’s use of chemical weapons last year was a stirring moral indictment of the Assad regime -- although President Obama immediately undercut him when he abandoned his own “red lines. So far, Kerry’s tenure as secretary of state is making Hillary Clinton’s undistinguished stint look impres-

sive by comparison. But that’s mostly a matter of timing. It is his misfortune to be present at the unraveling, as crisis after crisis unfolds, with the administration lacking the interest or the tough-mindedness to effectively respond. It is impossible to find anywhere in the world where our position or alliances are stronger than they were six years ago. One hopeful theory about Obama foreign policy was that, after serial humiliations and failures, it would recalibrate toward more assertiveness, like Jimmy Carter did after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. But he seems content with America’s new status in the world. John Kerry will just have to get used to it.

than that if you desire. My standby generator weighs hundreds and hundreds of pounds. Since your budget is tight, you’ll probably be able to get one of the 2,000-watt machines. Even though its power output is not the highest, you can still power many things with it. For example, here’s the running wattage of some common tools or appliances: Cell phone battery charger: 25 watts Furnace fan blower: 700 watts Electric crock pot: 240 watts Video game device: 40 watts Refrigerator: 550 watts Water well pump: 575 watts

What I love about the new portable generators is how they automatically adjust the gasoline motor speed to the power being requested by the devices you have connected. If the generator senses little need for power, then the motor runs at a lower speed, using less fuel and making less noise. The new generators are also very quiet, even when running at full speed. When you take them on a camping trip or a picnic, you won’t have to scream to be heard in a conversation. The issue with small generators is what’s called startup power. Certain appliances and tools have a very high starting wattage. You may have seen this in your home on oc-

casion when a refrigerator, washing machine or air conditioner turns on. The lights in your house may momentarily dim when the electric motors in these things draw lots of power to start spinning. A portable generator putting out only 2,000 watts can’t handle the start-up demand of many things, so you’ll have to check into that to see what you can and can’t power when your house power goes off. You’ll discover you can use a portable generator in the event of a power outage, but you’ll be busy. You’ll only be able to power a few things at a time, so you’ll be switching out extension cords. The portable generators have smaller fuel tanks, so if you have an extended

power outage you’ll be refueling on a more frequent basis. Follow all safety guidelines when refueling a generator and NEVER operate a portable generator indoors, in a garage, near an open window, or in any other way that could result in exhaust fumes being trapped. The carbon monoxide produced by the gasoline engines can and will kill you. Be careful and read all safety instructions. Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for FREE at www. Program and Walk With Black Bear Expert Ben Kilham

The Lakes Region Conservation Trust is proud to present a program by noted black bear expert Ben Kilham on Thursday, August 14, to be held at LRCT’s Conservation Trust’s Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area in Moultonborough. For nearly 20 years, Ben Kilham has taken in orphaned and injured black bear cubs. Through rehabilitation and at times by becoming the surrogate mother bear, he has helped the cubs develop the skills needed to survive in the wild. Mr. Kilham’s work in New Hampshire has been the subject of three National Geographic documentaries and a Discovery Channel show, and he is the author of “Among the Bears – Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild”. Ben Kilham has been a guest speaker as far away as Russia, China, and throughout the United States. The program on August 14 will include an evening presentation, and it will be preceded by late afternoon walk to observe bear

Black Bear Expert Ben Kilham will be at the Lakes Region Conservation Trust Conservation Area at Castle In The Clouds in Moultonborough on Thursday, August 14th. habitat and signs of behavior in the field. From 6:30-8:30pm, Ben Kilham will present a slideshow titled “The Social Black Bear”, which focuses on how black bears communicate, their social life, and parallels to human behavior.

This presentation will be held in the Castle in the Clouds’ Carriage House. It is open to all, and there is no preregistration required. Please note that for all LRCT presentations and excursions at the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area, the property is accessed via

Ossipee Park Road, not through the Castle’s front gate. In addition, for those interested in exploring black bear habitat, there will be an opportunity to join Ben Kilham and LRCT Guide and expert tracker, Katie Callahan on a guided walk where you will view evidence of bear activity and learn how to identify bear sign in the field. This 1.5-mile walk will depart promptly at 4:30 p.m. and return at 6:00 p.m. in time for the evening presentation. This walk will be limited to 30 participants; preregistration is required. To register, please contact LRCT at lrct@lrct.org or 603-253-3301. The Lakes Region Conservation Trust offers guided excursions ― hiking, paddling, and snowshoeing trips ― year-round on and to conserved properties throughout the Lakes Region. The excursions provide a great opportunity to learn about and explore LRCT’s conserved lands with knowledgeable guides. A schedule of upcoming excursions is posted on LRCT’s website (www.lrct.org).
