Andrew Hemingway For GOVERNOR

The Rochester Opera House was first opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1908. It has survived hard times over the years and today flourishes as an important cultural venue in New Hampshire, hosting a wide variety of concerts, plays, dance and music performances including Leeann Rimes and the “Rhythm In The Night” dance show this season.

Rochester Opera House: Where The Arts Mean Business by David Colby Contributing Writer

It may be an apt metaphor that a grand old performing arts space is located in the heart of city government. Recent studies show that a thriving arts community is good for the community at large and this is nowhere more evident than at the Rochester Opera House. Rochester opera house occupies most of the second and third floors of Rochester City hall.

Designed by Rochester native George Gilman Adams, and open to the public for the first time on Memorial Day in 1908, Rochester Opera House has a storied history. Its design and construction are a stunning achievement. Architectural details like the horseshoe balcony and grand proscenium arch are accented by intricate stenciling and beguiling murals. Near-perfect acoustics deliver the sound of performances to each of the theaters 950 seats. And

perhaps most remarkable of all is the movable floor, almost certainly the last of its kind in the world. The story of the Rochester Opera House is one of birth, near-death and rebirth. In its first 30 or so years, Rochester Opera House enchanted, with performances of plays, musicals, vaudeville, as well as local governments and high school functions. By the 1940s opera house had fallen on hard times and it was decided to remove the floor levelSee opera on 34

As chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus he also was instrumental in getting over 100 state reps elected and after was an unrelenting watchdog for all bills that were going to be heard and testifying, when necessary, for or against. If elected Hemingway would work to implement a business flat tax that could bring a reduction of up to 42 percent, helping small business owners, who make up about 90 percent of businesses here. of amateurism (like the NCAA still tries to do), the International Olympic Commission just let anyone compete, regardless of how they made a living. It’s made for much better, cleaner competition. The NCAA should do likewise, and allow schools to pay players, the way they pay guest speakers or campus entertainers. Don’t even force them to take classes. Countless examples abound of illiterate “student” athletes who had no business being enrolled in college making a mockery of academia as they twisted rules to maintain eligibility. It’s a farce. I refer mostly to bigtime revenue-generating sports. Division I football and men’s basketball are essentially “minor leagues” or developmental leagues for the NFL and the NBA. So let an NFL team “affiliate” with Alabama and pay the college for player rights. But let other programs have the same opportunities. If a women’s bas-

If they prove themselves, then they can negotiate contracts. Yes, there are countless questions that would need to be addressed to implement revolutionary change. But the courts may force the NCAA’s hand. Breitbart.com and Yahoo Sports recently pointed out that a federal judge found that the

Pay For Little Leaguers? My feelings evolve with regard to paying big-time college athletes. Ever the traditionalist, I used to support the notion of the “amateur” athlete—competing for the “love of the game.” But full scholarships are indeed payments, sanctioned and regulated by the NCAA, conferences, and institutions. Beyond that, many athletes get all kinds of perks and special treatment. And some of them get paid “under the table” anyway. Even on the supposedly non-scholarship, Division III level, the financial aid offices at many institutions find creative ways to direct tuition assistance to favoured athletes. It would be simpler to just let colleges pay athletes up front, the way they pay professors, administrators, and staff. Let the market rule, and stop the torturous “compliance” dance which makes liars and hypocrites out of so many in college sports. The Olympics reformed over twenty years ago. To The Editor: Rep. Burchell is the man for the job in Belknap County. Having known Richard Burchell for these past two years, I can tell you he is honest and direct and not afraid to do the work that needs to be done. The Belknap County taxpayer will do well to remember how Rep. Burchell has fought for them time and again while serving in the Belknap Delegation. Whether it is supporting reasonable budgets for the taxpayer or undertaking the debated project work on the County Jail, Rep. Burchell was always professional and prepared. Our family wishes all the best to Belknap County and we know Rep. Richard Burchell will work for ALL the folks in Belknap. We heartily endorse Rep. Burchell for Belknap County Commissioner.

Since I announced for a run for State Rep a lot has changed. The main reason I decided to run was to help put new leadership in the County Convention. As it turned out my wish was granted before the time to sign up, The two people I hoped would be replaced decided not to run. I hope the new leader-

ship will run the Convention in a way that respect is giving to all the members, no matter what party they represent. It also would be nice everyone is giving a chance to give their opinion There are many other candidates with more qualifications and experience than me. Even though I will be on the ballot, I plan to support the four candidates that win in the primary. The one thing I learned is how many special interest organizations that send you letters of their interest and questioners. The only one I sent back was the one from the NRA, Of which I am a member. I am a firm supporter of the second amendment. If I was ever elected, my special interest would be the people of Meredith and Gilford. I have not run an active campaign, no fund raising, no handout cards, no signs and no other political events. I want to thank all those people that encouraged me to run and offered to help finance my campaign. If I should ever win in the Primary, then I would run a full active campaign and would need plenty of help. I want to wish all the other candidates good luck. A lot more important than me winning, is the reelection of Jeannie Forrester, our State Senator and Joe Kenney our Executive Councilor.

Supporting Hemingway To The Editor: Voters have a clear choice when voting for the nomination in the Republican Primary for governor. There is the establishment candidate Walt Havenstein, who seems to have come out of nowhere, and the conservative candidate Andrew Hemingway, who has lived here all of his life. Andrew has built and sold two businesses in our state, Walt has been the CEO of a company who was hired to help implement Obamacare. Walt is endorsed by Governor Chris Christie who helped get Obama reelected with his hugs and praise. You can know a candidate by who their friends are. Andrew is a vibrant young candidate who has clear and well prepared plans to make New Hampshire a business friendly state to attract companies here with jobs. He will attract younger voters to the polls because he knows that education is very important and points out that after students graduate college here they usually leave the state for states that have good job potential. Andrew wants to bring jobs back to N.H. with a tax plan that will attract companies. He is also against the federal government taking control of our schools through Common Core. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Tale Now Told

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I am often asked why I don’t have, like most normal homeowners during the summer season, an outdoor barbecue grill. Now that the summer is over I will tell the painful tale. I did have an outdoor grill once, four years ago. It was a short-lived affair and it wasn’t a pretty one. It has taken me this long to get over it and even admit what happened. It may take just a little longer till I am ready to begin again. I am hoping by sharing this story the questions will cease and the healing can be complete. It started innocently enough. It was late in the summer of 2010 when, after living in my new home for only a couple of years, I had decided to buy a grill. I was ready to spread my wings. I drove to a local store which offered many different grills and after spending a few minutes studying the different features of each one, I picked out the one that I thought fit my specific needs. (It’s funny how specific needs and cost always seem to match up exactly.) I was asked by the salesperson if, for an additional cost, I would like to have someone come to my home and assemble it for me. I defiantly shook my head and with a snort told him that wouldn’t be necessary. In my mind I thought: “It’s just a grill, how hard could it be?

This, my friends, was my first mistake. When I got the box home, put it in my basement and opened it. At first I was confused. Had they given me the wrong box? Upon further examination I realized that no, this wasn’t a kit for a small two-passenger, do-it-yourself Lear Jet but was, in fact, my new outdoor gas grill. I took a deep breath. It would be okay. I could do this. If we could put men on the moon we surely had the intelligence to put something like this together. If only I had a friend from NASA. I opened up the accordion like, multi-page instruction manual which I realized, once opened could never be closed again properly in my lifetime. I saw the assembly was a 12-step program. I carefully laid out all of the parts separately on the floor, moving my washer and dryer so as to make room for all of them. I felt as if I were reconstructing an airplane crash site. I counted the parts, screws and bolts. They all seemed to be there. I had done enough for one day. I would get back to it in the morning. I had a beer, ate some dinner and went to sleep. I slept uneasily. The next morning, after hours of finding anything else to do but assemble the grill, I finally made the trek into the basement. Even after the constant repetition in my head during the night that the grill would put itself together somehow (Gee‌Wayne Dyer said that is all I would need to do) I was saddened to see that every single part was exactly where it was the night before. I sighed, dropped to my knees and begin to tackle step one. I could go on and on about what happened next. It was four days

of trial and error. Some parts, put on backwards despite what I thought the instructions stated (“Gee it looked like the outside of part G not the inside), needed to be readjusted by disassembling back from step six to step two and starting over again. This happened more than once with various steps. I found that screws I needed to use really did have to be the exact size as shown on the manual. These weren’t, as I assumed, just estimates. It got ugly. But I did finish. Four days later, knees and back feeling ten years older. I stood and looked at my creation. It was good‌ and there were only three unused parts left on the floor. Close enough! I effortlessly got the grill outside, hooked up the propane tank, turned on the gas and pressed the button. Sorry, I know what you were expecting, but there were no surprises. The darned thing actually worked. I used it a handful of times over the next month as the nights were already cooling off. It didn’t matter. Besides all my ineptness in such things I had succeeded in my own way. I now had an outdoor barbecue grill to give me years of summer pleasure. Or, so I thought. That fall my health took an unexpected turn for the worse. I was out of action for a few months and during that time, fall turned to winter. Snow fell, temperatures dropped and my grill, barely used, stood proudly in it place, covered appropriately for the season. My doctor insisted that I do no lifting of any kind for awhile till everything was back in order. In the meantime, snow had piled See smith on 26

Andrew Hemingway: The Face of A New Generation Of Leadership

The Weirs Times and Cocheco Times endorse Andrew Hemingway as the Republican nominee for governor. The following editorial by former U.S. Senator Gordon Humphrey sums up our own reasons for getting behind this exciting and important candidate. –Ed. Being a good leader isn’t about your age or how many years of business experience you have. It’s about the kind of experience you have and what you can do with it. Andrew Hemingway is a young, hi-tech entrepreneur running for Governor of New Hampshire, and I support him. Republicans have talked about encouraging young people to join with us, to grow our base and By Sen. Gordon help us elect leaders to fight for our conservative ideals. But our words and our actions don’t always Humphrey match. When Andrew Hemingway announced for office, the GOP Establishment stirred from its slumbers. “He is too young. He hasn’t earned his wings in Party politics yet,” they grumped. Instead, self-appointed Party pooh-bahs put forward an older, Establishment candidate to vie for the Republican nomination in the September 9th Primary election. This high-handed approach has failed the GOP over and over. What’s wrong with youth? What’s wrong with fresh idealism? What’s wrong with new ideas? Hugh Gregg was in his thirties when he became Governor. Likewise, the people of New Hampshire elected me to the U.S. Senate when I was in my thirties. Instead of welcoming Andrew See humphrey on 25

Asian-Bashing Dems And Doormat Minorities Who Enable Them Harry Reid is a bigoted Beltway corruptocrat with an interminable case of diarrhea of the mouth. The feeble-minded coot stuck by Michelle Malkin his foot in Syndicated Columnist that mess of a mouth again last week at the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce. But as mortifying as the Senate Majority Leader is, there’s an even worse spectacle: Asian-American liberals who keep giving top Democrats and their partisan operatives blanket passes. Reid clumsily offered his assessment of the success and intelligence of business leaders of Asian descent at the gathering. “I don’t think you’re smarter than anybody else, but you’ve convinced a lot of us you are,” he babbled. You put those uppity Asians in their places, Hater Harry! During a question-and-answer session, Reid followed up his jibe with a crude “joke” about Chinese surnames that would make Archie Bunker cringe: “One problem that I’ve had today is keeping my Wongs straight.” Good thing the pale-faced codger didn’t let a “ching-chong” slip out, too. You know it was ringing around between his ears. Mocking Asian monikers is a hanging offense if you’re a Republican pol or conservative talk-show host. But it’s just a meaningless gaffe by “diversity’s” best friend when you’re Democratic Senate Majority Leader. That’s why Reid’s hosts obliged with subdued tittering. National

news anchors selectively averted their gazes. The Asian American Journalists Association, so quick to issue sanctimonious guidelines for avoiding ethnic stereotypes, maintained radio silence. And the usual left-wing speech police who read racism into every word uttered by conservatives from “angry” to “Chicago” to “Constitution” to “Obamacare” saw and said nothing. One bizarre group, Asian Pacific American Advocates, was only offended because they resent public attention paid to successful Asian Americans. They vented that Reid “falsely assumes that our communities continue to perpetuate the model minority stereotype, when we have been actively working to highlight the vast socioeconomic disparities within our communities.” These confused people have spent way too much time in social justice 101 classes. Back in Washington, D.C., the usually garrulous Democratic chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), Rep. Judy Chu, responded by ... not responding at all. CAPAC Executive Director Krystal Ka’ai did not return my email seeking reaction to the race-mocking Senate Majority Leader, who has now apologized for his “extremely poor taste.” Chu and her ethnic grievance caucus -- which pledges to “denounce racial and religious discrimination affecting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders” -- did find time over the past year to: --attack a Seattle theater production of The Mikado for its use of “exaggerated Asian stereotypes.” --”denounce” comedian Jimmy

UN Issues Sickening Verdict on Syrian Violence U N I T E D NATIONS—In what can only be described as a plague on both your houses, an UN investigative panel has isby John J. Metzler sued a specific Syndicated Columnist and sickening verdict on the ongoing violence in Syria’s civil war. The report blames both sides in the conflict, the Assad family regime, as well as a widening specter of Islamic jihadi rebel groups in carrying out systematic and unparalleled violence against both civilians and combatants in the three year fight. Mass atrocities have become the daily norm according to Paulo Pinheiro, a respected Brazilian diplomat and academic who serves as the chair of the UN’s Independent International Commission who says, “Hundreds of civilians are dying each day as the fighting goes on with no regard to law or to conscience.” In parts of Syria under control of the Islamic State of the Levant (ISIS or ISIL) Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, is marked by amputations, executions and beatings in public squares. Bodies of those killed on put on public display to terrorize onlookers. Women are lashed for wearing clothing against the ISIL’s austere rules.

The Commission specifies that “members of ISIS have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Aleppo and Ar-Raqqah governorates including acts of torture, murder, enforced disappearances and forcible displacement.” Child soldiers are moreover being recruited by the jihadi rebels. Other notorious rebel groups such as the Al- Nusrah are responsible for car bombs in urban areas, usually with indiscriminate targets. Importantly the Independent International Commission of Inquiry has warned that the widening influx of foreign fighters and the success of terrorist groups “risks of the conflict spreading further are palpable.” Indeed hundreds of West Europeans, many of them recent Islamic converts, have flocked to “the cause” in Syria and now Iraq to fight for ISIL. At least one hundred of the terrorists are believed to be American-born jihadis. Two Americans fighting for ISIS have recently been killed in Syria, while a British terrorist was believed to have beheaded American journalist James Foley in a brutal U Tube propaganda killing. Clearly the Syrian regime has blood on its hands too in the conflict which has raged for three and one half years. The Damascus rulers are more than guilty for their arrest, imprisonment, and torture of dissidents and the indiscriminate use of air-dropped barrel

bombs over civilian neighborhoods in rebel held towns. The report cites the use of “horrific torture” and sexual assault in government prisons. Systematic torture has lead to the widespread death of detainees.

Significantly humanitarian aid has been used as a weapon of war despite UN Security Council calls to allow the free flow of aid to besieged towns. The refugee spillover into neigh-

Facts vs. Visions The political left has been campaigning against the use of force since at least the 18th century. So it is not surprising that they are now arguby Thomas Sowell ing that heavSyndicated Columnist ily armed or aggressive police forces only inflame protesters and thus provoke violence. Statisticians have long warned that correlation is not causation, but they have apparently warned in vain. There is no reason to doubt that heavily armed police in riot gear may be more likely to show up where outbreaks of violence are expected. But when violence then breaks out, does that prove that it was the appearance of the police that caused it? I strongly suspect that people who travel with armed guards are more likely to be murdered than people who do not travel with armed guards. After all, they are not paying to have armed guards for no reason. If so, should we conclude from a higher murder rate among people with armed guards that having armed guards increases your chances of getting murdered? Shall we also conclude from this that we the taxpayers should no longer pay to have Secret Service agents guarding our presidents? Actually, the history of assassinations of American presidents could be cited as evidence that armed guards are correlated with higher murder rates, if we proceed to “reason” the same way the advocates of weaker police presence seem to be reasoning. There have been 43 Presidents of the United States, of whom four -- Lincoln, Garfield, McKin-

ley and Kennedy -- have been murdered. That is a murder rate of 9 percent. If the murder rate in the general population -- most of whom do not have armed guards -- were 9 percent, that would mean more than 27 million Americans murdered today. We haven’t quite gotten up to a murder rate that high, even in Chicago. Does anyone seriously believe that leaving presidents unguarded would reduce assassinations? Probably not. But this is the golden age of talking points, as distinguished from serious thinking about serious issues. These talking points are often based on a prevailing social vision, rather than on hard facts. According to the prevailing vision, ghetto riots are due to racial injustices -- and the way to deal with them is to make concessions in words and deeds, while severely restricting the use of force by the police. Factual evidence cannot make a dent in that vision. But, for those who are still so old-fashioned as to rely on facts, here are a few: Back in the 1960s when ghetto riots broke out in cities across the country, the region with the fewest riots was the South, where racial discrimination was greatest and police forces least likely to show restraint. In Detroit, with a liberal mayor in the city and a liberal governor in the state, where the police were warned against shooting during the 1967 riots, there was the largest death toll of any city during any riot during that whole decade -- 43 people dead, 33 of them black. Both the New York Times and the Washington Post expressed astonishment that such a riot could occur in a city with such See Sowell on 25

Merlot and Her Human News From Live and Let Live Farm

My name is Merlot. I am a twelve year old Shire quarter horse cross, and I would like to share a little bit about my life, and how Live and Let Live Farm has impacted me. I was born in Maine and then my humans at the time moved my paint gelding friend and me to Florida. After a while a new human

When my human’s job fell through all our lives changed rather suddenly. She tried hard to make ends meet, but could not. Desperate, she had to stop feeding us grain and ration our hay. The timing could not have been worse, as winter was setting in. We horses and other agricultural animals that live out in the natural elements need more

Live Farm’s Rescue. By February of this year our human was out of money and was desperate for food and help for our then, very thin bodies. Help was coming for us and our human. With a heavy heart our human headed to Live and Let Live Farm rescue with us. New Beginnings We were loaded onto a trailer. Now, this can be a terrifying thing for a horse, because we never know what is happening. But the trailer pulled into a farm and I saw lots of happy horses and many other animals about as we drove down back to a paddock, where several caring humans were waiting for us. Some had smiles, and some stared with worried eyes. One had both. Then I heard the humans say-

ing that we were staying at this new place. Then we were unloaded and our old human left the LLLF rescue after the truck was loaded with feed to help care for the other animals back home that mostly lived in the house. When we came off the trailer, the first thing I saw was flakes of hay spread out, just for us. I hadn’t seen that much food in months. I heard the humans commenting on how thin we were, saying things like, “Look at those ribs showing,” and “look at those hip bones sticking out of that poor baby.” Then I heard those magical words that so many horses have heard on this rescue farm over the past seventeen years, “new names... for new See farm on 14

Contributing Writer

Recently, through the proverbial grapevine of good samaritans, Reuben’s Rescue Ranch heard about a kitten who desperately needed to be re-homed. Apparently, she was in an abusive situation, and her life was at risk, if a new home couldn’t be found. That’s all we needed to hear……we agreed to take her in. But another animal-lover had spoken for her, just prior to us learning of her plight. We were just relieved to hear that she was going to a safe place. Unfortunately, less than a month later, we got word that the orphan couldn’t stay in her new home, long-term. So alas, we ended up with her! She’s a slender and beautiful tabby with distinct white facial markings. Her foster mom was calling her “Nirvana”, and after so much change in her young life, we thought she should at least get to keep her newly acquired name. Nirvana’s foster mom told us that our feline friend had initially been

Although often skittish, especially around quick movements, she was beginning to exhibit an affectionate and even snuggly side to her personality. My family immediately fell in love with her, even with her quirkiness. Coming to our farm in the country was definitely a culture shock for this young city cat. Shortly

after her arrival, we introduced Nirvana to our three large (and somewhat boisterous) dogs. Judging from her Wild Lioness imitation, complete with pinned ears, spitting, and ferocious growling, it was obvious she’d never seen a canine before….and she was completely UNthrilled with making their acquaintance. The surprise factor of meeting the dogs, however, paled in comparison to this small kitten comSee thomson on 19

He’s well traveled; we took Boss in a shelter partner swap with our friends at Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield. He’s a very handsome, dashing, all black cat who was adopted and returned back in February of 2014. We have found him to be gentle and loving and pretty darn friendly around other cats; he spent quite a while in the feline social wing over the summer. Perhaps because of the cute kittens, or that his coat color is considered unlucky in New England, he has been overlooked, poor baby! We sent him over to our newest pet partners, Petco in Gilford, in the hopes that a little retail face time would improve his adoption prospects. That didn’t work either. So Boss, not despondent yet, but wondering why he still waits for his forever home, can be viewed at our shelter on Meredith Center Road. We are open on Sundays too. Looking for a sweet purr-cat? Then Boss, for sure, is your man.

by Steve White Contributing Writer

Have you noticed the daylight hours are waning, nights are cooler, and mornings are turning frosty? Nature has noticed these phenomenons for a number of weeks. Wild birds migrate for a variety of reasons; to escape foul weather, to search for a nesting site, or to locate consistent food sources. The real mystery of migration is not why birds perform this ritual but how. Just exactly how does a hummingbird that weighs less than 3 dimes travel each year for a total of 5,000 miles, including a 500 mile non-stop journey over the Gulf of Mexico, and arrive within a yard of last year’s home territory? How does an artic tern accomplish an annual, roundtrip of over 22,000 miles from Alaska to Antarctic? Did you know that long distance, transoceanic migrants can spend over 1000 miles in the air in a single span without landing? How do they flap their wings so long? Do birds migrate at night, using the stars as navigation or during the day using aerial landmarks? The path during the migration route is fraught with dangers. Some of these natural and unnatural threats are predation, hunting, habitat loss, window collisions, human lighting that confuses navigation, etc. Wild birds can travel at speeds up to 50 miles per hour, depending on wind conditions, the bird species, and the path of the

For example, a shearwater, a European sea bird, was removed from its burrow in Wales, flown over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Boston and released. This remarkable bird navigated its way back to the original Wales nesting territory in only 12 days! There has been much research on how birds accomplish these enormous trips using homing pigeons as the basis of their analysis. Pigeons, like most birds, are active during the daytime. They use the sun’s position in the sky as a form of compass. As the sun’s position changes throughout the day, the pigeon automatically compensates for these changes. Migration is a fascinating topic for many people. We will continue with our column to inform you about the many aspects of the exodus of wild birds throughout the world. Enjoy your birds!!

DEAR TIM: I’ve got quite a bit of painting to do both inside and outside my home. I watched a neighbor use an airless paint sprayer and he made a mess of things. It seemed to spit the paint out. Professionals use real paint sprayers with compressed air that produce excellent results. I can’t afford a pro rig and wonder if there’s an alternative. --Emily T., Rockford, Illinois. DEAR EMILY: Two years ago I tried a newer airless paint sprayer. Here’s what happened within three minutes: #CompleteFailure. The mess your neighbor made may not have been entirely his fault. It could have been a poor-quality sprayer. Or perhaps he failed to lubricate the sprayer’s internal parts. I still have not figured out what went wrong in my case, but it left me with a sour taste in my mouth for the nonprofessional spray equipment. I have used paint sprayers for years, and the ones that incorporate air are the best. The compressed air does a marvelous job of atomizing the paint

The good news is that I just tested Wagner’s Flexio 890, a DIY spray paint tool that uses compressed air. The results were remarkable and the tool worked perfectly out of the box. The learning curve was as flat as a hill in Kansas. If you decide to use this tool, you’ll achieve pro results in less than 60 seconds on a large test piece of cardboard. The Flexio 890 contains

two nozzles. One is for larger surfaces such as walls, ceilings, exterior siding, fences, concrete block and stucco. The smaller nozzle is for applying paint to smaller trim work, where you need more control and a finer paint spray. Years ago, I felt that that the time I typically spent cleaning the spray tool eroded all of the time saved spraying instead of rolling or brushing. The Flexio 890 design is simply amazing, allowing for rapid disassembly of the

nozzle and its few internal parts. I was able to clean the spray tool to nearnew condition in about 15 minutes. By comparison, I would have spent at least 10 minutes, maybe more, cleaning brushes, roller pans and roller frames had I not used the sprayer. To achieve professional results, I suggest the following tips. First, read and re-read the instruction manual that comes with whatever spray tool you end up buying. Many of them are well written and assume you’ve never sprayed before. There is a technique you need to use to get professional results, but it doesn’t take long to figure it out. Wear the oldest clothes you own when spraying paint for any length of time, and wear a hat. Don’t wear jewelry. Realize that if you intend to spray for hours, you’ll get thousands of tiny dots of paint on you, especially if you’re painting anything over your head. The paint I used with my new DIY spraying tool was a top-quality exterior paint. It was quite thick, and I decided to thin the first container of paint. If you decide to thin the paint, pay close attention to the thinning instructions on the paint label. My paint said I could not add more than 16 ounces

of water to the gallon of paint. I decided to thin a quart of paint, so I added 4 ounces of water and stirred it well. After using the first quart of paint, I decided to test to see if the sprayer would handle the paint unthinned out of the can. It did a marvelous job using the thick paint and I couldn’t see any difference in the final results. It’s really important to know how to adjust the volume of the paint that’s being sprayed. If you apply too much paint too fast, you’ll waste paint and you could end up with runs and sags in the paint. The tool I used had a simple adjustment knob. I’d start with the knob in a position that delivers a minimal amount of paint. You can always turn the knob if you feel too little paint is being broadcast by the nozzle. One of the nice features of the paint sprayer is you don’t have to fret and worry about the paint skinning over and drying if you stop for a few minutes. The only paint exposed to the air is the tiny amount at the tip of the nozzle. If you’re using a water-based paint and want to break for lunch or answer a call from a friend or Mother Nature, you can just drape a wet paper towel over the tip of the nozzle to keep the paint from hardening.

Before you start to paint your first thing, practice with a large scrap piece of drywall, OSB board or a large cardboard box. Pay very close attention to the distance the tip of the nozzle is from the work surface. With most sprayers, the tip needs to be about 6 to 8 inches from the surface being sprayed. If you’re too close, you’ll end up with a mess, and if you’re too far away, the paint can drift away in the air. When you spray outdoors, be very, very careful on windy days. Paint overspray can happen and it might be a nightmare to clean up. You may not think overspray is happening, but -- believe me! -- the paint can drift 10 or 20 feet away, making a huge mess. Use drop cloths to protect anything you don’t want paint to cover. Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for FREE at www. AsktheBuilder.com. ing face to face with our gargantuan Cockatoo bird, casually strolling down the hall to greet our new family member. The look on Nirvana’s face spoke volumes: “What kind of a freak show have I gotten myself into now? Bu t meet and greet

wasn’t the only thing that stunned Nirvana. The unusual sound effects of farm life were just as horrifying to our new arrival. Random donkey brays and rooster crows would elicit a spring-board reaction out of Nirvana, that rivaled the bouncing of Winnie the Pooh’s “Tiggerâ€?. Her responses were quite humorous to witness, even if Nirvana didn’t always seem amused. Luckily, Nirvana’s dismay was short-lived, for it didn’t take her long to adjust to her new surroundings and accept us as her family‌.both furry and otherwise. She now likes to taunt the dogs, play with the other cats, is respectful of our Cockatoo, and has even grown accustomed to loud cocka-doodle-doos and donkey brays. She’s affectionate and playful toward our whole family, but Nirvana’s favorite is my twelve year old son. Almost from day one, she claimed him as hers and only hers, and she’s slept flopped on his chest each and every night since. One day, not long after joining our family, Nirvana was lying curled up in my lap, purring loudly enough to be heard in the next room. Her contentment

with life was obvious, and I couldn’t help but contemplate the meaning of her name. The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word “Nirvanaâ€? as “the state of absolute blessedness‌..â€? and “freedom from the pain and care of the external world.â€? Googlie definitions, all ba-

sically describe the same thing: “...a state of being that defies all worldly cares and/or worriesâ€? or a â€œâ€Śspiritual state of bliss that is without physical or material concernsâ€?. Observing my kitten’s peacefulness, I was struck by the thought that “Nirvanaâ€? had become the epitome of her name. Here was a living creature that, in her few months of life, had been mistreated, bounced between three different homes, and had endured a chaotic indoctrination into a completely unfamiliar setting. Yet, after such a short time with us, she was completely relaxed in my lap, seemingly without a care in the world. She was indeed in a state of bliss, or “nirvanaâ€? and I admired her ability to overcome her past so completely, by living utterly immersed in the present moment. Animals’ happiness is rooted in the here and now‌‌and that happiness is contagious‌.. if we allow it to touch us. We humans can learn a lot from our animal friends in this regard‌..I know I sure can. So instead of dwelling on things I can’t change from my past, or worrying about things I can’t control in the future, my ultimate goal is

to emulate my small feline friend named “Nirvanaâ€?, by fully engaging myself in each present moment, with a more conscious appreciation for the here and now. Now if only I could learn how to purr‌‌

13. Poor Mo’ne’s “moment in the sun will likely be just that. A moment. And in five years, those endorsement opportunities won’t be there. And the chances of her playing hoop at UConn are remote at best. Well-intentioned regulations and laws just end up compelling people to cheat. And they reward administrators like Keener at the expense of performers, like Davis. It’s really about freedom. Get rid of the arcane rules. Maximize transparency. If a 12-year-old is a world-class baseball player, reward him! Or her! We reward worldclass 12-year-olds who can sing, dance, or fix computers. Let’s just reward people who deserve rewards. Letting amateurs “cash in won’t always be pretty. But it will be clean. Freedom for Mo’ne! Sports Quiz What Major League Baseball player once collected 12 straight hits? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports figures born on September 4 include golfer Tom Wat-

son (1949). Watson won the British Open in 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, and 1983. Incredibly, he almost won the 2009 Open as well, just before turning 60! Sportsquote “People complain that pro athletes make a lot of money; but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money.--NBA player Patrick Ewing Sportsquiz Answer In 1938, BoSoxer Mike “Pinky Higgins nailed 12 straight hits. He later managed the Red Sox. Michael Moffett is a Professor of Sports Management at NHTI, Concord’s Community College. He recently co-authored the critically-acclaimed and award-winning “FAHIM SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back (with the Marines) — which is available through Amazon.com. at the onerous penalties New Hampshire now imposes for possessing small amounts. Hemingway, with his experience in how our state legislature works, knows he won’t win every battle. He even suggests a veto of any bill that has the support of strictly one side so that it can be looked at again till it is even a better bill. He does

understand as well his influence using a “bully pulpit. Unlike former Republican governor Craig Benson, a one-term governor with big business but no legislative experience and whose term in office was a failure due to his inability to work with the legislature, Hemingway has the tools, knows the people and how the process works. Most importantly, he knows New Hampshire and small business, the backbone of our state. At 32 years of age we are excited about what he can accomplish not just as governor but his mark on our state for years to come.

New Hampshire beyond the miniscule amount suggested by Governor Hassan. Hemingway doesn’t advocate for the legalization of marijuana but does think we should adopt a “wait and see attitude as other states progress with it. Hemingway also has the common sense to realize we need to look

liberal policies. But neither of them changed its vision in response to facts which contradicted that vision. In Chicago, there were three nights of rioting on the westside in 1966. These riots were brought to a halt with what a Chicago correspondent for the Los Angeles Times called an almost “miraculous low death rate of two. Yet that same reporter called the use of both troops and police a “serious overreaction. humphrey from 6

Hemingway’s candidacy, the GOP big names in Washington and Concord have pushed a candidate who spent the better part of two decades inside the Washington Beltway, working both sides of the aisle to get as much money as he could for the big defense and government services firms he led. Through political contributions, this candidate’s firm added half a million dollars to Democrat coffers in Washington in 2010 alone —including contributions to Jeanne Shaheen and Harry Reid. Did the Party pooh-bahs in Washington and Concord take this sordid matter into account, before anointing their chosen candidate? Evidently not. That once again money had trumped integrity, did not seem to concern them in the least. Andrew Hemingway is a thirty-two year-old entrepreneur who has built and sold two companies and is working on his third. He is a New Hampshire native who has a lovely family, with a third child due weeks before the general election. While the Establishment candidate was hobnobbing with Democrats in Washington and funneling donations to anyone who had influence, regardless of principle, Andrew Hem-

Any force sufficient to prevent riots from getting out of hand is almost certain to be characterized as “excessive force or “overreaction by people with zero experience trying to stop riots. During a later and larger riot in Chicago, Mayor Richard J. Daley went on television to inform all and sundry that he had given orders to his police to “shoot to kill arsonists -- provoking outraged denunciations across the country. The number of people ingway was energetically leading the charge in New Hampshire to repeal the Limited Liability Corporation Tax and working hard to get 100 new State Representatives elected to the NH House — all while building his business and raising his family right here in the Granite State. Andrew Hemingway is the only candidate who has been releasing serious, concrete and innovative plans to fix this state’s serous problems. He proposed an overhaul of the entire business tax structure to eliminate most taxes and impose a 2% flat tax instead. That’s innovation. That’s sound and serious policy, based on conservative values. That’s the way to create jobs worth having. His opponent released a plan that was proposed more than twenty years ago and hasn’t worked yet. We need new leadership, fresh leadership, idealistic leadership. We need a candidate who can engage new voters and inspire traditional voters searching for innovative solutions based on conservative American values. The time has come to pass the torch to the next generation. We need experience in Concord, but we need the right kind of experience. We need the experience of Andrew Hemingway.

actually killed during that riot was less than a third of the number killed in kinder and gentler Detroit the following year, even though Chicago had a larger population. Do you prefer that fewer people get killed or that kinder and gentler rhetoric and tactics be used?

had fallen to. Yep. A direct hit onto the top of my twice used, week-long in the making, still brand-new, barbecue grill. Expecting the worst, I went to look at the damage and my expectations were fulfilled. At first glance, still being covered, I was unsure of the damage but upon removing it I saw that the grill had certainly been crushed beyond recognition and was now unrecognizable, deformed, like a Picasso sculpture. There was nothing much I could do with the remains of the grill for the next couple of months. Winter’s cruel grip and my own limitations kept it trapped in its position, a cruel, everyday reminder. Even covered, I could never get

the picture of the destruction out of my mind. When spring arrived as well as a renewal of my own health, I quickly disposed of the shattered grill pieces at the dump. A place I knew now was not just a pleasant place to spend an afternoon talking to a neighbor, but to some, like myself, a place where their shattered dreams lie. I have yet to get up the courage to buy another outdoor grill, the memory of that first one still fresh in my mind. That’s the whole story. I only tell it to stop people from asking. The retelling of it always bringing back those feelings anew. Now, after writing this, I hope the questions will stop and the healing can be truly begin.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is presenting Russell Congalton, Ph.D with “Loons in New Hampshire, Doing Quite Well, Thank You on Wednesday, September 10th at 7pm This talk will focus on the last 25 years of information about the survival and distribution of the common loon throughout New Hampshire. Maps, generated using GIS (Geographical Information System), will be used to show population growth and spread over time. Data collection methods will be reviewed. Trends in the loon population, loon habitat, nesting habits, hatchling survival and dispersion patterns will be presented. Dr. Congalton’s talk will conclude with the current status of loons in New Hampshire. Dr. Congalton, Ph.D., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is a professor of GIS and remote sensing at the University of New Hampshire. He received a Faculty Excellence Award in 2005. His research interests are divided almost equally between basic research on

spatial data uncertainty/ map accuracy and applied research applying the tools of remote sensing, GIS, and spatial data analysis to solving natural resource problems. These projects have included deer and bear habitat mapping, endangered plant habitat analysis, mapping forest change, fire and fuels management, and eelgrass mapping, to name just a few. This lecture is free for members and for non members there will be a $5 fee. Please call 3665950 to RSVP. Located on Route 3 in Laconia, next to Funspot.

Kimmel for a kids’ table skit that poked fun at America’s debts to China. ---demand the firing of Fox News liberal chucklehead Bob Beckel for using “racial slurs against Chinese people. Here’s another glaring omission by the Democrats’ whitewashers: Neither CAPAC’s press release archive nor its Twitter account has published a word about the ugly liberal racists in Kentucky who’ve repeatedly attacked former GOP Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. Last year, left-wing super-PAC Progress Kentucky tweeted multiple China-bashing messages insinuating that Chao, the Taiwanese-American wife of GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell, was part of some conspiratorial plot to move jobs to Asia. The Progress Kentucky xenophobes denied engaging in race-baiting. But the dog whistle -- dog trumpet

-- had been sounded, and the liberal racist hits keep on coming. Earlier this month, Kathy Groob, a “progressive supporter of McConnell’s Democratic opponent, Alison Grimes, repeatedly insulted Chao on social media as his “Chinese wife. She’s “not from KY, she is Asian, fumed Groob. You won’t be surprised to learn that Groob had complained copiously about “sexism and “racism by the tea party. When will doormat minorities grow spines and stop protecting the progressives of pallor who denigrate them? Collectivism is a hard, cowardly habit to break. We do know that he is pro-choice and in favor of gay marriage. At a 912er’s meeting in Rochester (at which Mr. Havenstein was not present) his campaign manager told me that Walt is a social moderate. We would say he is a social liberal. Andrew is a prolife social conservative. Walt Havenstein cannot beat Governor Hassan in the general election but Andrew Hemingway will because he has clear ideas and has made them

Supporting Smith To The Editor: I have had a home on Sawyer lake for almost 50 years. I also had a home and a chain of flower shops in the Boston NE suburbs .In 2008 Scott Brown ran for the US senate as a republican. I worked for him. When he won we were all overjoyed. We, the conservative voters of Mass., became distraught when we saw the way he voted, 75% with Obama, Barney Frank, Kelly Ayotte, and John McCain. I love America and I love New Hampshire but we are at a tipping point of never being the “the shining city on the hill again. Brown is supported by George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, two beauties bent on destroying America. I am sure you know all this Mr.Editor, The point I would like to make is that there are still many good people in the world like Sen. Bob Smith, who can straighten this mess out. He is a bulldog for God-given Constitutional rights, LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. He is a proven, principled,no-nonsense leader. Please vote Tuesday Sept 9th. Thank you, Dick Ouellette Gilmanton, NH.

Supporting Forrester To The Editor: As the owner of a small business who provides good jobs for local people, I am happy to endorse

Jeanie Forrester in her bid to remain our State Senator in District 2. Recently, we were notified by the State that our business was liable for worker’s compensation costs for an employee who voluntarily left our employment last year. We knew that there must be a mistake and submitted the necessary paperwork to the State and called to confirm that it was received. We then got another notice saying that this same employee was receiving financial benefits without any indication that our documentation was even consulted. More paperwork, more calls and more of being ignored by the State. Finally, we had enough and sent one simple email to Jeanie. THE SAME DAY, Jeanie forwarded our concerns to the appropriate Commissioner. The next day, we got confirmation from the Dept that, after reviewing the documentation, we were not in fact liable and would receive a refund. WOW! That is the type of constituent service most people can only hope for. If Jeanie hadn’t stepped up, our local business would still be held hostage to a bureaucratic system which wasn’t at all responsive to our efforts to show that there had been a mistake. Jeanie Forrester is smart, experienced and most importantly responsive to the needs of her constituents. I would encourage everyone to support her in the upcoming Primary and General Elections to insure that we have an advocate in Concord. Christopher Boothby, M.P.A., N.H.A. Meredith, NH.

the direct and indirect economic benefits of the performing arts in Rochester. Notably, the study reported that nonprofit arts and culture are a $7.4 million industry in the city. These organizations spend $4.3 million each year and generate $3.1 million in additional spending by audiences. This in turn generates $238,000 in local government revenue and puts $282,000 in state government coffers. The report further details the types of expenditures audiences make. Hotels, restaurants, retail stores and other businesses benefit directly. The report concludes: “In fact, communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance the quality of life-they also invest in their economic well-being. Rochester Opera House also reports significant gains in tickets sales- up 74% in the five years ending with the 2013/2014 See opera on 36
