Concord Company Pitches In to Complete Historical Renovation Project by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Franklin Pierce, New Hampshire’s only President (1853-1857) was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1804 and died in Concord in 1869. His body lays at rest inside the Minot Enclosure which is part of Concord’s expansive Old North Cemetery, which itself is a historical gold mine of our New Hampshire ancestors.

History is about time, and time had taken its toll on the 601 feet of antique iron fence which surrounds the Minot Enclosure. Over a hundred years of iron and oxygen provoked its natural rusting and deterioration and made it unsafe. The City of Concord has given considerable resources over the years to preserve the cemetery but the fence was a huge project. In the past, the deterioSee fence on 16

To The Editor: Maggie Hassan and her cohorts have apparently decided that their strategy for winning elective office involves attempting to demonize the TEA Party. I challenge Ms. Hassan to state which of the following TEA Party principles she disagrees with and why: •Fiscal Responsibility •Constitutionally Limited Government •Free Markets •Personal Responsibility •The Rule of Law •National Sovereignty •The Right To Life, Liberty And The Pursuit of Happiness If Ms. Hassan is unable or unwilling to do this, then I think she should stop trying to use the TEA Party as her political boogeyman.

Our Story The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain

Russell T. Cumbee Franconia, NH.

Fear and Loathing in Wolfeboro To The Editor: Generally, I like Fridays. But this Friday, my commute to and from work left me feeling angry, insulted, violated. Two big political signs, 4’ x 8’, had been slashed and lay in pieces on the side of Route 28 in Wolfeboro. I felt as though our First Amendment right of free speech—in fact, the Constitution itself—also lay slashed to pieces. Like most folks in this contentious, highly politicized state, I have my own strong political views, but I would be equally incensed if this had hap-

pened to the other candidate’s billboard. This act of vandalism goes beyond other symbolic acts, such as burning the flag. Stifling another’s ideas is far worse than expressing one’s own, however odious. Our free speech is such a fundamental precept of our country that the original thirteen states refused to ratify the Constitution until it and other basic rights were guaranteed. This amended, improved Constitution is the ideal I pledge my allegiance to each day. It is an even more enduring and significant symbol than the flag of what our forefathers died to preserve. Consequently, an attack on the Constitution is tantamount to an attack on our country. What I saw today felt like a treasonous act. Use your voice. Don’t stifle mine. Gordon Lang Ossipee, NH.

Understanding of Merits of Tax Cuts To The Editor: I have been following the presidential race very carefully and understand the philosophy, arguments and merits of both ObamaBiden and Romney-Ryan very well with ONE exception. I also note that the Weirs Times is very conservative and has many dedicated and verbose conservative readers. What I fail to understand is why RomneyRyan are so adamant in their argument to legislate

the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Locally owned for over 20 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. No, none of the daily grind news will be found in these pages, just the good stuff. 30,000 copies are distributed every week in the Lakes

Region/Concord/Seacoast area. 15,000 delivered to communities along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and another 15,000 to neighboring cities and towns. An independent circulation audit estimates that over 60,000 people read the Weirs Times every week. To advertise your business or service call 1-888-3088463. a $250,000 tax reduction for millionaires and billionaires. It seems to make no economic sense in attacking the debt or deficit reduction. Hopefully, some readers of this letter (other than millionaires and billionaires) will respond with their understanding of the merits of this proposal and how it would positively impact them given their personal economic environment. B. Doyle Center Harbor, NH.

Alive And Kicking To The Editor: Some years ago, a regal, strapping actor Jack Palance stepped toward the podium at the Oscars. Jack was rumored to have died, yet at 75 years old, he stopped, did a handful of one-armed pushups, then approached the mike, and refuted those ideas comically: “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” The audience erupted. We are blessed to have such a fine paper such as Foster’s Daily, known for its balanced reporting and attention to detail. However, when they declared there was no Republican Winner in Strafford House District 16 (Dover’s Ward 4 only), on Sept. 12, they made a rare mistake. As a candidate, I stayed to hear all results. The faithful Ward 4 Poll Workers spent about an extra hour completing the count, which included 75 Write-In’s. The final result revealed the fruits of my aggressive Write-In campaign: 64 Write-In votes for me. 35 Write-In’s minimum, and a majority are required by state law to win a Write-In campaign. Therefore I was declared the Winner. Our excellent, impartial Ward 4 Moderator, Mr. Lee Skinner, and his Poll Workers were all there. We are still awaiting official confirma-

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Fill In The Blanks N o w that the primary elections are over here in New Hampshire, I by Brendan Smith can finalWeirs Times Editor ly hunker down and concentrate on my campaign for Governor. I am running for Governor under the Flatlander Ticket. Some of you have probably never heard of me; I won’t be on the ballot, but you’ll see me out and about as I try, once again, to ratchet up my efforts to have you write in my name for Governor. It certainly isn’t easy to mount a write-in campaign. Write-in candidates hardly ever stand a chance. This is because most voters have been conditioned by what I call the “SAT Factor.” We all have taken those SAT Tests that are used to find out how smart you are. You get a bunch of questions and then a multiple choice of answers. You then take a wild guess and fill in the box next to the number of the corresponding number you hope is the right answer. Those who are lucky enough to guess the most right answers then win the privilege of having a choice between w h i c h very expensive college they’d like to attend. Those who don’t guess the most right answers, will often feel sad and will be comforted by their parents who will usually, within days, comfort themselves by going out and buying that cute little sports car they’ve been eyeing for the past four years. Of course, we were all prepared for taking the SAT’s after years of

similar guessing tests throughout school. It had now become a pre-conditioned human trait. Most polling places today still work with the SAT Factor. Voters will be handed a large sheet of thick-stock paper – anything flimsier just wouldn’t feel right – with a bunch of names on it and next to the names, those little boxes that you have been filling in since you were in middle school. Sometimes there’s another thick-stocked piece of paper you get at the same time. This will usually be a surprise to the voter. They weren’t expecting this. It will have a lot of words on it that make no sense, trying to explain something or other that the town or city or state is trying to do and they need your vote on it. Of course, you can’t really make heads or tails of it and you don’t want to spend a great deal of time trying to figure it out; after all, you have other things to do. On the bottom of this thick-stocked paper full of words are usually a “Yes” and a “No’’ and next to them, those familiar and comfortable little boxes. You could just leave the boxes blank since you have no clue exactly what you are voting for, but you know deep in your mind, that you just have to fill in that box. So, thinking back to those SAT tests, you take a guess and just hope that you’ve made the right choice. Often you will find out months later when you get your tax bill or a road is suddenly being built across your property. So now it is back to the ballot with all the names on it. Usually, you will know one or two names

in advance that you want to vote for, so you fill in the boxes. The rest of the ballot, well that’s up for grabs. Have you really been paying attention to who was running for Registrar of Deeds and exactly what do they do anyway? Still, you pick one anyway and hope your deeds remain safe. On each ballot there is a box to fill in with no name next to it; this is where you would writein someone’s name, in the case of Governor, that would be me. But it is unfamiliar territory. When you took those SAT’s there were no such options. There was always an answer to choose and you never had to come up with one yourself, that wouldn’t have been fair. Why in the world would anyone ever take the time to fill in that box and write-in a name. It just isn’t programmed into our systems. So, that is why my campaign is a tough one. I have to convince people to go beyond their conditioned selves and take a step they are not comfortable with. How to do that, I still haven’t figured out, but I’m working on it. But maybe it could all be for naught even if I do succeed. You see, where I live, after you fill out those thick-stocked pieces of paper you have to bring them over and gently place them in a machine that looks suspiciously like a shredder. Maybe they’ve already decided who won. Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com. You can also follow him on twitter at @weirsbrendan.

Words In A French Life, Touchstone, 2006, and Blossoming In Provence, Create Space Independent Publishing Platform, 2011 by Kristin Espinasse. I am a logophile. Yes, I love words. Long words, short words, English words, French words. Plerophory, subdolous, shenanigans, bisou, pantoufle, zut. It could be the look of the word that attracts me, the sound, or the picture it creates in my mind, and reading a fine letter, essay, or book created from those lovely words, that is rapture. I’m also a Francophile, so when I came across a blog, and subsequently two books, that combines my love of words and my love of French things it was kismet. About six years ago I discovered a blog written by Kristin Espinasse (www.french-word-a-day. com), an ex-pat from Phoenix, Arizona now residing and raising a family in Provence. The Hip-Hop President: All Swag, No Cattle

September Surprise WASHINGTON The storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the brutal murders of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other by Oliver North Americans at Syndicated Columnist the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, produced chaos this week in the so-called mainstream media. Instead of asking about how the heck this could happen in the aftermath of the Obama administration’s Arab Spring euphoria, “reporters” started looking for scapegoats. The potentates of the press first focused their ire on something few of them even had seen -- a puerile Internet video titled “Innocence of Muslims” -- and then they turned their guns on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. As usual, the O-Team’s media cheerleaders got it all wrong.

As Americans in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania participated in solemn ceremonies honoring our nearly 3,000 countrymen killed in the terror attacks 11 years ago, angry crowds were gathering around our embassy in Cairo. The U.S. Embassy responded by issuing an apologetic statement condemning “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” Instead of defusing the situation, the crowd swelled and stormed the embassy, tore down the U.S. flag and replaced it with a radical Islamic banner. Meanwhile, 700 miles west of Cairo, a well-armed Islamist paramilitary force was laying siege to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. By 8:30 p.m. EDT, U.S. and international news services were reporting that Americans had been killed and wounded in Benghazi -- without specifying numbers or names. Many reports speculated that the Libyan onslaught was part of a growing “spontaneous” See north on 26

BY MIWazzup, President Obama? You’ve got room on your schedule to schmooze hip-hop radio DJs, debate by Michelle Malkin Nicki Minaj’s Syndicated Columnist rap lyrics, hobnob with big donor celebs Jay-Z and Beyonce, and hang with Hollywood gossip TV anchors. We see your passion on the golf course, basketball court and beach. We see you late night on Letterman and Leno. We see your boundless energy on the campaign trail. We see your Twitter donation solicitations from dusk till dawn. But when it comes time to play leader of the free world in times of international crisis, it’s “see ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya.” He’s all swag, no cattle. I know I’m not the only one who was flabbergasted by Obama’s bloodless Rose Garden appearance following the planned twopart 9/11/12 jihadi attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Late as usual, the president ambled up to the podium 15 minutes behind schedule on Wednesday morning. Teleprompter-less, he spent the majority of his fleeting five-anda-half-minute appearance with eyes downcast on his script. With a grim Secretary of State Hillary Clinton looking over his shoulder, Obama delivered a flat, obligatory tribute to the murdered Americans. And then he read these words, drained of

any iota of outrage, as if reading a local weather forecast. Or a fifth-grade book report. Or a dinner menu: “The United States condemns (pauses, looks down) in the strongest terms (pauses) this outrageous and shocking attack (monotone). We’re working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats. I’ve also directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world.” Punctuated with noncommittal “uhs” and a pedestrian lilt, he read some more: “And make no mistake (eyes looking down). Uh. We will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people (eyes down, flipping page).” In a bland and unconvincing recitation, Obama stated perfunctorily: “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.” Looking down at his script again, he hurried along: “We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.” Detached, diffident, aloof and resigned, America and the world saw a eulogizer in chief, not a commander in chief. It was as if something more important were occupying his mind at the time. And it was. Soon after, Obama scurried onto a plane to Las Vegas for a lovefest campaign rally with 8,000 fanboys and fangirls who cultishly screamed, “I lovve youuuuuu” -- interrupting his cool POTUS flow momentarily as he dispensed with a line or two about the bloody disaster in the Middle East. Foreign Policy Mirages U N I T E D NATIONS— The killing of the American Ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens, along with three othby John J. Metzler er American Syndicated Columnist diplomats, the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt and the tearing down of the flag replacing the stars and stripes with a black banner, all allegedly in response to an American-produced anti-Islamic video, shows the raw nerve of violent emotions just below the surface throughout the region. These savage attacks, curiously on September 11th, raise the specter of wider anti-American violence in a combustible Middle East. “The U.S. diplomatic presence was deliberately attacked and burned; those claiming responsibility cited a video insulting to Islam as their motivation,” stated Jeffery Feltman, Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs before a emergency meeting of the Security Council. He added “the United Nations rejects defamation of religion in all forms, but there is no justification for violence such as occurred in Benghazi.” A separate statement by the fifteen-member UN Security Council “condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the United States of America’s diplomatic mission and personnel in Benghazi, Libya… and also condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the United States Embassy in Cairo, Egypt on 11 September.” A statement by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon added, “Nothing justifies the brutal violence which occurred in Benghazi.” The timing of the attacks seems searingly focused; September 11th , the day Jihadi terrorists attacked the USA in 2001, and could reflect the Al-Qaida attack pattern.. Benghazi was the first city to rise up against the Colonel Gaddafi dictatorship and it was Benghazi which was saved by the USA, Britain and France in a landmark military action under the dubious policy “responsibility to protect.” The political sandstorm of the Arab Spring is yet to settle; the region remains the crucible of

conflict from North Africa to South Asia. The raging civil war in Syria is propelled by many Islamic fundamentalists who oppose the Assad dictatorship. The Arab Spring in Egypt is described by the politically feel-good narrative as democratization. Right, until you consider the loss of a flawed but pro-American ally, Hosni Mubarak, and the precipitous tipping of Egypt to a Muslim Brotherhood government which is hostile to Israel, increasingly cozy to China, and wary towards Washington. The loss of Egypt as a close American ally has probably been the biggest setback on the foreign policy front for President Obama. Ironically, a week before the militant mob attacked the Embassy, the Administration was speaking about forgiving one billion dollars of Egypt’s debt owed to the USA to help prop up the country’s teetering economy. Part of the Administration’s mantra is that America’s prestige has returned globally, especially in the Muslim world, since 2009. The formal end of the war in Iraq, and naive American acquiescence if not support for the flood of political regime changes throughout the region, such as in Libya, has presumably made the USA popular again. Yet, a Pew Poll of views of the United States in the Egypt shows marginal support of 27% in 2009 (date of the fawning “New Beginning” speech in Cairo) to a dismal 19 % in 2012. In Turkey, once a solid ally, opinion barely budged from 14% support in 2009 to 15% today. In Jordan, support slipped from a meager 25% in 2009 to 12% in 2012. Brokering the long elusive peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians has less political momentum under Obama than during the Bush Administration. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, what the Administration once labeled AFPAK, American and NATO forces are holding their own militarily, but the Taliban enemies know the political clock is ticking and a pullout date has been set. Pakistan, once a close and indispensable American ally, is simply not on the same page with Washington. There is no doubt Islamabad has long played a doublegame with the USA; this is less the fault of the Obama Administration

than the fact the Pakistanis know they can get away with it. American drone strikes inside Pakistan have led to a dangerously festering relationship between Washington and Islamabad. According to a recent PEW opin-

ion poll, 74% of Pakistanis consider the USA an enemy. Iran has long confronted and confounded American presidents ever since Jimmy Carter’s hapless policies allowing the Islamic

An Economic ‘Plan’? Former president Bill Clinton told the Democratic National Convention that Barack Obama has a plan to rescue the economy, and by Thomas Sowell only the fact Syndicated Columnist that the Republicans stood in his way has stopped him from getting the economy out of the doldrums. From all this, and much else that is said in the media and on the campaign trail, you might think that the economy requires government intervention to revive and create jobs. It is Beltway dogma that the government has to “do something.” History tells a different story. For the first 150 years of this country’s existence, the federal government felt no great need to “do something” when the economy turned down. Over that long span of time, the eco-

nomic downturns were neither as deep nor as long lasting as they have been since the federal government decided that it had to “do something” in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929, which set a new precedent. One of the last of the “do nothing” presidents was Warren G. Harding. In 1921, under President Harding, unemployment hit 11.7 percent -- higher than it has been under President Obama. Harding did nothing to get the economy stimulated. Far from spending more money to try to “jump start” the economy, President Harding actually reduced government spending, as the tax revenues declined during the economic downturn. This was not a matter of absent-mindedly neglecting the economy. President Harding deliberately rejected the urging of his own Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover, to intervene. The 11.7 percent unemployment rate in 1921 fell to 6.7 perSee Sowell on 36

Breakheart Tool Co. NEW & USED MACHINERY & TOOLS Bought & Sold

Who is GOP? Obama’s World War As I fire up the computer this Friday planning to pen my column for 9/20 there is uncerby Niel Young t a i n t y Advocates Columnist around me. On 9/19 will we be talking about suicide bombers on the ground at stadiums, parks, churches, entertainment venues, and large places where Americans gather? Of course I do not expect any good from Barack Obama. (Google Obama: I am a Muslim) to watch and listen as B. Hussein continually praises the Muslims. It is hard for him to praise America, because in my opinion; he doesn’t like us. This just in from Washington Beacon quoting press secretary Jay Carney: “We also need to understand that this is a fairly volatile situation and it is in response not to United States policy, and not to, obviously, the administration, or the American people, but it is in response to a video, a film that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting. That in no way justifies any violent reaction to it, but this is not a case of protests directed at the United States at large or at U.S. policy, this is in response to a video that is offensive to Muslims. So Barack, what are our military personnel, Homeland Security, state and local law enforcement to do? BTW, has Barack mentioned the other three Americans murdered along with our Chris Stevens? Once again we are to pussy foot around a country that harbors antiAmerican killers! Obama Flash-Back at Breitbart: “Then-Senator Barack Obama makes the case for an Obama

Presidency on November 21, 2007 by saying he is uniquely qualified to bring stability to America’s relationships in the Muslim world because he lived in an Islamic country during his youth and his halfsister is Muslim. CNBC.com 9/14: “In its downgrade, the firm said that issuing more currency and depressing interest rates through purchasing mortgage-backed securities does little to raise the U.S.’s real gross domestic product, but reduces the value of the dollar. In turn, this increases the cost of commodities, the firm said. In April, EganJones cuts the U.S. credit rating to “AA from “AA+ with a negative watch, citing a lack of progress in cutting the mounting federal debt. Who is responsible for this? Could it be the Obama administration, Congress, and Senate? Matt Cover CNSNews. com: “Average retail gasoline prices have more than doubled under President Obama, according to government statistics, rising from $1.84 per gallon to $3.85 per gallon. “The average gasoline

price is calculated by the Energy Information Agency, and shows that over the past 43 months of President Obama’s term retail gasoline prices have more than doubled. *************** In 1994 I decided not to seek re-election to the NH House. At the last minute I was drafted to be the conservative in the Dist. 4 State Senate GOP Primary. That was nearly 14 years ago and a tight race, which I lost by 63 votes, is a lot different this year, in our new District 7. Back then the only issue that Sen. Leo Fraser’s team could use against me was attendance. And they were right to do. No digging to expose personal history. Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon shall be remembered for politics of personal destruction. And now, I am disgusted to say, by Republicans Ken Merrifield and The Franklin Gang, Senators Jeb Bradley, and Peter Bragdon, and the Merrifield Approved News via a Concord Monitor reporter. This attack on a young, talented, con-

the wrought iron, grit blasting, welding, fabrication of missing parts and, finally, the repainting project with a very sophisticated, rustinhibiting paint. Materials engineers at Praxair first took apart two 12-foot sections of the fence to understand what needed to be done. They found that it had been painted several times over the years and that leadbased paint was used. The fence was removed in sections and numbered, so that it could be properly reinstalled, and sent to TSP, Inc,, a grit blasting facility in Hampstead, New Hampshire, to take care of the lead paint issues. Some of the finials were entirely missing so a mold was created to cast new ones. There was also foundational damage to contend with that isn’t surprising with a structure this old, The iron posts of the fence were secured to granite slabs that are deep in the earth. As the posts rusted, they expanded to many times their original size and shattered the stone. A See fence on 19

All told, Praxair estimated that their donation to the project including man hours and other aspects was in the $80,000 range. Quite a considerable savings to the City of Concord who had received an estimate, a few years back, of $300,000 to do the project. Old North Cemetery is located on North State Street in Concord.

process was devised to rebuild the granite and reattach the posts; it consisted of building a form, pouring concrete and designing, purchasing and constructing brass plates which were anchored to both the existing and repaired granite slabs. After this the fence sections could then be safely secured to the re-

inforced foundation. All of this was done over a period starting in June and culminating on Thursday, September 13th, with seventy-plus of Praxair employees partaking of the fence painting using rustproof paint donated by a local company. decide that it would be worth the wait. Roger vs. Canseco In 1993 when powerhitting outfielder Jose Canseco was playing for the Texas Rangers, his manager, Kevin Kennedy, let him pitch the eighth inning of a lop-sided loss

to the Red Sox. I’ll always remember seeing Clemens in the dugout begging Sox manager Butch Hobson for a chance to bat. Hobson didn’t go along, which was really too bad. It would have been great fun watching Clemens bat against Canseco (who ended up hurting his arm

and missing the rest of the season). Roger vs Pedro Clemens and Pedro Martinez were both known for pitching inside, and for throwing AT batters from time to time. I checked out the stats on Pedro. His last year with the Red

Sox saw him hit 16 batters. But when he went to pitch for the Mets the next season, he only hit four batters all year long. Why? Because in the National League, Pedro had to bat. He had to face the chin music himself, if he hit an opposing batter. So he pitched differently. It never happened, but I always hoped for an Astros-Mets game with Clemens and Martinez the respective starting pitchers. Would they throw inside? What if Martinez hit Clemens? Would Clemens reciprocate and retaliate? Pretty likely. What a great scenario THAT would have been!

One of my favorite essays, “Coquille,” (shell) about dreams, peace, and memories touches, a special place. Kristin puts her shells in a cookie tin the way I put my collection of words and quotes in an old humidor. If I had to pick my top two stories, one from each collection (which I couldn’t do because there are too many in both books that stir my heart and make me smile), I’d pick Bouquiner (to read) from Words In A French Life and Foi (faith) from Blossoming in Provence. Bouquiner is special because it reminded me of my high school French teacher, Madame Denood.

Day after day she would assign a story in the “Yellow Book” for the class to translate and it seemed

grandmother, who used to make me look up words in the dictionary, and then she’d say, “Use it three times and it is yours.” Kristin has a trick for remembering words that I will adopt to help me with my French vocabulary. “I will remember you! Fofolle… fo-folle… fofolle. I will remember you!” Foi is a favorite simply because it mentions my own serious addiction, books, words, reading. The idea of not finding the next favorite word and learning it’s meaning, of not having that next book on the shelf waiting to be read… zut!

soon be long forgotten. As you establish new routines, it seems like there are 10 additional tasks to handle each day, and cleaning, while one of the most important things on your to-do list, often falls to the bottom due to lack of time. In fact, a recent CLR Brands survey revealed that on average, women spend 15.5 hours per week cleaning in and around the home while men spend 10 hours per week - a significant amount of time. Ever wondered how to clean more effectively and quickly, to actually find some extra time to spend on your favorite things this fall? One idea is to get the whole family involved and not let cleaning become an insurmountable chore. With some planning and teamwork, you can make cleaning a fun event in your household and teach your kids (and significant other) to take pride in their home by taking responsibility to each keep up with a few simple tasks so your home never becomes a disaster zone. CLR (www.clrbrands. com) cleaning experts share top tips to help you make the most of your time and clean more efficiently. For more inspiration on how to transform your home, see below. Tips and tricks for speedy fall cleaning: * Figure out who likes doing what best. If someone prefers to handle the yard work and the kids love polishing silver or unloading the dishwasher, divide it up so the act of doing chores doesn’t seem as tedious. Or, designate a family cleaning day and clarify who will be doing what and when. * Pre-game. Before the big day, assign each per-

son a room to prep so that once you attack with your gloves on and product in hand, you’re not wasting precious time and energy figuring out what goes in the junk drawer, what should be thrown out and what should be kept. * Multitask. Several products can do double (if not triple) duty. For example, CLR works on showerheads, porcelain, chrome, glassware, fiberglass, stainless steel and grout, and can even remove sprinkler spots on outdoor windows and remove stains and mold smells from your washing machine. Grease Magnet cleans grills, smokers and tenacious garage floor stains and Stone Cleaner brings the sparkle back to delicate, hard-to-clean surfaces like granite, marble, Corian and tile. * Get the hardest part out of the way first. Medical professionals are taught to sanitize a room by starting with the dirtiest area and working toward the cleanest, and you should do the same. Tackle the most timeconsuming areas (scumsoaked shower doors, greasy grills, or dirt and dust on top of fans) first and then work toward the less time-intensive ones. * Create rewards or foster healthy competition with kids. For enterprising children, showing them how you can find silver “treasures” and polish them to sparkle is a great way to get kids involved. You can even make it a game by suggesting that the person who can get an old piece of silver the shiniest will be awarded a prize.

Autumn is a season of change. To the average backyard birder, it is also a time of excitement and anticipation. We are witnesses to our songbirds as they prepare for the onslaught of winter. Food sources are investigated and memorized. Shelters are given a look see and once over. Mixed flocks happily flirt about as the constant pursuit for dependable, natural food sources is dampened by the diminishing daylight hours. Each of us who feeds wild birds should be using this time to prepare our feeding stations for the ice and snow that is sure to be a daily ingredient of our bird watching this winter. During the warm seasons, we tend to locate our bird feeders and bird baths at the edge of our properties, away from the backyard areas prone to human activities. Our children and pets use grassy lawns for recreation. Wild birds feel more comfortable alongside tree lines of properties during the egg laying and

hatchling stages. This arrangement works best for both parties involved and is the optimum solution for birders who wish to entertain wild birds while pursuing normal family activities. For most families, however, the winter season is a lonely time for that same backyard. As the snow piles up, the large acreage is barren of children and pets. The spring/summer locations for your bird feeders and baths at the property’s edge could be a logistical issue during winter. How do you plan to fill these feeders so far from your home? If you like to shovel great distances, this will provide a much needed workout. If you wish to limit your snow removal activities, you should consider positioning your feeding stations nearer to your house or apartment. Many customers have slipped and hurt themselves during slippery conditions while trying to refill feeders that were not properly stationed. There is a simple solution. Use these upcoming weeks to plan your winter bird feeder and bird bath locations. Try to visualize the snow path necessary to reach this new location. If you own a deck, this is extremely useful for a winter feeding area. Most decks have an outdoor rated electrical plug nearby for your heated bird bath or deicer. Consider the use

of deck mounted poles to hang your bird feeders. Premium iron poles will allow you the option of a clamp or screw-on mount for your deck posts or railings. Swivel arms provide ease of use and access to your bird feeders. Be sure to read our next article filled with simple ideas on how to provide natural protection for birds on your deck from predators. These wonderful tips reuse natural materials and are free to use. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. Wild Bird Depot has donated over $5,000 to local rehabilitators and local nature centers since 1996. Be sure to check out our blog “Bird Droppings via our website www.wildbirddepot.com. Shortly after midnight, the Obama campaign -- not the White House -- sent an email to reporters: “We’re shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack. But once again, no mention of the attack on the embassy. By dawn on Sept. 12, it was known that Stevens and three other consulate personnel were among the dead in Benghazi. Since then, the media feeding frenzy has been nonstop. So, too, have anti-American “protests -- in Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, Lebanon, Iraq and Af ghanistan. On Sept. 13, in a Telemundo interview that was supposed to focus on his outreach to Hispanic voters, President Barack Obama was asked about the U.S.-Egypt relationship. In his response, Obama said, “I don’t think that we would consider them to be an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy. They’re a new government. That statement prompted another round of dip-

lomatic doublespeak from White House and State Department officials -- and demands from some on Capitol Hill to cut economic and military aid to Egypt totaling more than $1.5 billion this year. Those calls finally prompted Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s hand-picked president of Egypt, to promise better protection for U.S. diplomats and missions in Cairo. Here’s what the media elites aren’t telling us about these developments: Focus on the “Innocence Internet video as a pretext for all this is simply wrong. Ayman al-Zawahri -Osama bin Laden’s successor -- issued a far more relevant video, urging Libyans to “strike back at Americans for killing his operations chief, Abu Yahya al-Libi, in a “targeted attack from an unmanned aerial vehicle. So much for the O-Team’s claim that al-Qaida is “all but finished. The myth of the “Arab Spring has been exposed. We are seeing not the rise of democracy but the imposition of neoNazi regimes devoted to imposing Shariah throughout the region. Gutting our defense budget, Obama’s “apologetic diplomacy, kowtowing to foreign potentates, abandoning our ally Israel, delaying the installation of ballistic missile defenses and “leading from behind have not worked. Nor have “harsh sanctions against Iran deterred the ayatollahs in Tehran from the race to acquire nuclear weapons. It’s now up to the Romney campaign to explain how he would do better. He has six weeks to do it. That’s no surprise.

With cooler temperatures on the way, there’s no better time to finish checking items off the home improvement to-do list. Several projects are “must do” and should be completed before the harsher weather arrives. Most are simple enough to accomplish in just a couple days. Complete these projects this weekend and spend the rest of fall enjoying your home and family. Paint it: Fall is the perfect season for painting, as you’re able to open your windows just enough to keep the air clean as you apply a fresh coat of color to interior walls. Painting is a quick - and doable -weekend project that provides instant

results. Purdy Professional Painting Tools can help you complete every project quickly and perfectly. Consider updating a guest bath or adding an accent wall to your favorite room. A helpful tool for painting small areas is the Jumbo MiniRoller by Purdy. The 4 1/2-inch and 6 1/2-inch covers allow you to attain a perfect-looking paint finish and cover those hard-to-reach or small areas. Faux treatments are also coming back in style. To create a room that’s on-trend, pick up a Symphony Faux Finishing Tool and add a “wash” or “texture” to your favorite space for an even more customized appearance. Inspect it: Regardless of the type of heat source

Is there such a thing as Weight Watchers for dogs? If not, this could be a niche market for an enterprising person. For now, at least, Bertha a very sturdy 101LB Yellow Labrador mix hopes to slim down while staying at New Hampshire Humane Society. Bertha hails from Alabama where whatever home she had formerly certainly didn’t skimp on the kibble! Truly a big cuddly dog but ideally losing 20lbs would be beneficial for her middle aged bones and overall well being. If you are able to enforce some discretion on the dietary front and not fall to the pleas for more food when Bertha gives you the big soft eyed imploring look, and can institute gentle exercise to get her going again, she might just be the perfect companion, she’s a personably well rounded dog that anyone would enjoy sharing their home with. used in your home, be sure to schedule an annual inspection before the temperatures drop. This will save the expense of having it checked during the busy season and reduce the risk of spending a few days in a cold home with a broken furnace. If your home has a fireplace and chimney, hire a professional chimney sweep to remove any debris that could catch fire and wreak havoc on your home. Winterize it: Cover grills and air conditioner units and store outdoor furniture in a shed to prevent rust and damage from the elements. Winterize any pipes that are exposed to outdoor temperatures, and consider installing door and window draft guards to keep your home warm and efficient. Protect it: Newly installed decks and permanent, wooden furniture require protective stains or varnishes. Be sure to apply the proper protection to the surfaces prior to the arrival of weather that could damage any untreated wood. See fall on 29

fall from 28

If your deck is older and requires a facelift, use a Purdy Prep Tool, such as a wire brush, to scrape away and remove the existing treatment to ensure the proper refinishing of the surface. Spruce it up: Give all shrubs and the lawn one last trim before winter to keep your home’s curb appeal looking great well beyond the first frost of the season. Remove seasonal plants that won’t last the winter to also ensure the outside of

your home looks wellmaintained throughout the coming seasons. If it looks too bare for your liking, consider a few potted mums on the porch or stoop for added fall color. Keeping the plants in pots will save the effort of digging into the frozen ground when their life span is through. Repainting exterior doors during this time is a fun way to make a statement and deliver an entirely new look to the outside of your home. Add a wreath or swag to your

newly painted door to showcase your personal style. By taking the proper precautions and completing these weekend projects, you’ll save time and money, all while keeping your home wellmaintained, looking great and ready for the winter.

self-absorbed, Obama lamented that “we” had a “tough day” for a second or two. And then he turned quickly back to the central business of getting himself re-elected. If only Obama had mustered half as much energy and outrage at the homicidal Islamic plotters in Benghazi as he shows in his tirades against the Tea Party, the Koch brothers, conservative talk radio, Fox News, House GOP budget reformers or GOP presidential rival Mitt

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. If only he had delivered his Rose Garden script with as much conviction and finger-jabbing as he did when he “slowjammed the news” with comedian Jimmy Fallon. This isn’t the first time Obama’s diffident demeanor in crisis has been exposed. I’ve noted before his bizarrely detached initial remarks about the Fort Hood jihadi attack -which he treated as an afterthought. And I reported on his sterile national security announcement

in December 2010, when the jihadi Christmas Day underwear bomber rudely interrupted his vacay. Eyes down on his notes the whole time and dressed in tie-less informal Hawaiian island wear, he described the failed attack with the weariness of a small-town sheriff’s deputy.

And then he rushed back to work. Or rather, rest. What makes a growing number of Americans angry is the lack of righteous anger this administration exhibits toward the existential threats we face abroad and at home. We want a leader -- not a celebrity -- who puts the

nation’s self-preservation above his own. Michelle Malkin is the author of “Culture of Corruption: Obama and his Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks and Cronies” (Regnery 2010). Her e-mail address is malkinblog@gmail.com.

to the campaign as ”Republicans for Lynch” to assist the Democrats in defeating the GOP nominee, those who see themselves as the GOP Elite, say nothing, why? Because that’s what the Elites do to conservatives! As someone who has been undermined by enemies – yes, I said enemies – all conservatives should see that the Elite, moderate Republicans, RI-

NOs, and all Democrats are not rooting for your views or candidacies. I recently read of a Republican who argued that being a member of the Tea Party, or Free Stater was not a description of her. Gee, I have NO problem with the Tea Party folks. They play a bigger part in good government than most Republicans at ALL levels of government.

cent in 1922, and then to 2.4 percent in 1923. It is hard to think of any government intervention in the economy that produced such a sharp and swift reduction in unemployment as was produced by just staying out of the way and letting the economy rebound on

its own. Bill Clinton loudly proclaimed to the delegates to the Democratic National Convention that no president could have gotten us out of the recession in just one term. But history shows that the economy rebounded out of a worse unemployment situation in just

two years under Harding, who simply let the market revive on its own, as it had done before, time and time again for more than a century. Something similar happened under Ronald Reagan. Unemployment peaked at 9.7 percent early in the Reagan administration. Like Harding and earlier presidents, Reagan did nothing, despite outraged outcries in the media. The economy once again revived on its own. Three years later, unemployment was down to 7.2 percent -- and it kept on falling, as the country experienced twenty years of economic growth with

low inflation and low unemployment. The Obama party line is that all the bad things are due to what he inherited from Bush, and the few signs of recovery are due to Obama’s policies beginning to pay off. But, if the economy has been rebounding on its own for more than 150 years, the question is why it has been so slow to recover under the Obama administration. The endless proliferation of anti-business interventions by government, and the sight of more of the same coming over the horizon from Barack Obama’s appointees in the federal bu-

reaucracies, creates the one thing that has long stifled economic activity in countries around the world -- uncertainty about what the rules of the game are, and the unpredictability of how specifically those rules will continue to change in a hostile political environment. Both history and contemporary data show that countries prosper more when there are stable and dependable rules, under which people can make investments without having to fear unpredictable new government interventions before these investments can pay off. A great myth has grown up that President Franklin D. Roosevelt saved the American economy with his interventions during the Great Depression of the 1930s. But a 2004 economic study concluded that government interventions had prolonged the Great Depression by several years. Obama is repeating policies that failed under FDR. Despite demands that Mitt Romney spell out his plan for reviving the economy, we can only hope that Governor Romney plans to stop the government from intervening in the economy and gumming up the works, so that the economy can recover on its own. Salome’s Stars Horoscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time for the usually outspoken Lamb to be a bit more discreet. You still can get your point across, but do it in a way less likely to turn off a potential supporter. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Good news: All that hard work you put in is beginning to pay off. But you need to watch that tendency to insist on doing things your way or no way. Be a bit more flexible. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to delay making a decision on the future of a long-standing relationship until you check out some heretofore hidden details that are just now beginning to emerge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your reluctance to compromise on an important issue could backfire without more facts to support your position. Weigh your options carefully before making your next move.
