At 7:30pm on Saturday, October 11th, The Flying Monkey in Plymouth welcomes John Hiatt back to its stage. Known as a critics darling and fan favorite, he has too many awards to list. The Los Angeles Times called him, “…rock’s most astute singer songwriters.” The eyes bulge out and dart from side to side ... the veins in his forehead throb and pulse ... a stream of sweat starts to head down the side of his face. And that’s just half-way through the first song. All that emotion, wit, energy -- and, oh yeah, really good songs -- are part of the Hiatt live experience. If you haven’t experienced one of his shows, we suggest you do in this intimate setting. Tickets for John Hiatt are $59, and $69 for premier seats. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www.flyingmonkeynh.com or call 603-536-2551.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Voting Guide

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It is almost Election Day again and if you are like the majority of the rest of the people in New Hampshire, you couldn’t care less. That’s too bad. I always make it a point to vote in every election, even in the primaries and small local elections. Even if it’s a cucumber running against a dish rag, which is often the case. The choices aren’t always exciting, but the process itself can be a lot of fun. Even if you can’t, in good faith, vote for anyone who is running, you can always write in someone else’s name. You can even give your candidate a nickname like “Buzz” or “Sparky” or “Doc”. Some of the real candidates have silly nicknames as well so there is no reason you can’t apply your constitutional right to give your candidate one as well. You can even write in your own name or the name of someone you dislike and maybe they will end up with the job and they will never be able to figure out what happened. If you have never voted before, it can be an adventure. First, and most important, you need to know where to go to vote. If you go someplace where there is no voting, you won’t be able to vote, for obvious reasons. Still, you may live somewhere where they have a lot of voting places but you can’t vote at just

any one you want to. For example, I live in a city with a lot of wards. When people ask me what ward I live in I usually say “I have no idea”. Still, I know where the place is where people in my ward go to vote, so I go there, even though I still don’t know the number. If you have never voted before, don’t know where your polling place is or even what ward you are in, you just drive around to the different ones until you find the one that has your name listed. Then you will know you are in the right place. It could take hours the first time, so be sure to bring a sandwich and a bottle of spring water. It will all be worth it once you arrive. Outside of the polling place will be people with large sticks, don’t be frightened. Attached to these sticks are signs (hopefully). These people are called “Poll Standers” because a name any less boring would do what they do a disservice. The signs they hold will most likely have the names of people who you will be voting for or against. They are there to possibly persuade you to vote for their candidate. They will all smile at you and say “Hello” as you enter the Polling Place. They are very friendly that day but the chances are if you run into them later at the supermarket they probably wouldn’t even give you the time of day. If I am unsure of who I am going to vote for, I will wait for the third hello and vote for the candidate on their sign. Not an exact science, but I like to keep them on their toes. Once inside, you will step up to a table where they will usually have A-M or N-Z printed on a poster board and taped to the table; voting is serious business. This is where you get

your ballot based on your last name. If it is a primary vote they will find your name and then yell out the party you belong to: “JOE SCHMOE, REPUBLICAN!!” This is done so everyone in your neighborhood will know your political leanings. You may soon after find yourself with new friends or lose old ones. Once you get your ballot, you go into a booth. There is a curtain you draw that only covers half of your body. If it’s a little busy other voters may be waiting for you to finish. If you are fashion conscious you should remember to wear nice shoes, pressed slacks and neat skirts since people will be looking at you from the bottom down. (Ladies: check those stocking runs.) Once you are alone in the voting booth it’s just you and the ballot. It can be a bit of an awkward moment, like a bad first date. What is this thing? Who are some of these people? What are these amendments? But you can’t excuse yourself and climb out a bathroom window, you have to do something. You will probably recognize some of the names on the ballot, others you won’t. If it’s a local election you may see the name of someone you know but never realized they were Supervisor of the Checklist or Registrar of Deeds. You may see some neighbors in a new light. Sometimes there is only one name listed under each party. If you already know who you want to vote for simply fill in the circle next to their name. This is where the skills you learned on those SAT tests years ago will finally come in handy. If you don’t know who you want to vote for, this is a great opportunity to write in a name as exSee smith on 16

To The Editor: Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter used to be a gritty populist. While she might have been an extreme liberal that I rarely found common ground with, I’ll give credit where credit is due, and can say that at least she wasn’t just another Washington D.C. clone loyal to lobbyists and career politicians. Sadly though, that isn’t the case anymore. Money and power changed Carol SheaPorter. Now, she is just another pawn of Nancy Pelosi and the big money donors who control Capitol Hill. She votes nearly 100% of the time with her party and refuses to be accessible to her constituents with town hall meetings or forums. I want to be represented by elected officials who care about my thoughts and want to reflect my beliefs. While I understand I might not agree with my congresswoman all of the time, I still deserve a chance to explain to her why I think she is wrong on a particular issue. Washington has change Carol so much that she doesn’t even give me that opportunity anymore. Jean Ferrieira Gilford, NH.

Newspaper Stories To The Editor: Massachusetts and New Hampshire papers have reported that power companies are telling everyone that electricity will be much more expensive this winter, but they haven’t

Our Story

told us why. Back in 2008, Mr. Obama told us he planned to raise electricity rates: “Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. . . . Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, natural gas—you name it—whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers. He couldn’t pass his capand-trade system, but he’s had the EPA write rules that are shutting down our coal-fired electrical generators. We can’t get our now-abundant natural gas to them because he’s blocked all sorts of pipeline construction. Rising electric rates are the direct result of Mr. Obama’s policies. Why won’t the newspapers tell us that? Bill Taylor New Hampton, NH

Vote Them Out To The Editor: The late Democrat Senator Paul Tsongas of Massachusetts once famously said, “You cannot be projobs and anti-business at the same time. You cannot love employment and hate employers New Hampshire’s Democrat legislators have different ideas. How else to explain the fact that not one of the 130 bills they passed into law down in Concord last session helped NH businesses? During tough

economic times, our Democrats didn’t pass a single bill that help businesses think favorably about moving to New Hampshire, creating new jobs, or expanding operations. Despite their campaign promises, they have not focused on “jobs, jobs, jobs. Instead, our current democratic legislators focused on increasing spending, increasing taxes, and reducing freedom by giving government the power to decide who can be your doctor and what kind of heath insurance you must have. Note, we didn’t say what kind of health insurance you want; they think they know best what you and your family need. This fits a disturbing pattern. The same priorities existed for a prior Democrat-controlled legislature. Remember their 100 new fees, fines and taxes? Remember how expensive it got to register your car? Remember the $800 million budget hole? This crop of Democrats are poised to leave us with our state’s finances in trouble again. Vote them out November 4th. Vote for personal responsibility. Vote for people who keep their promises. Vote for “jobs, jobs, jobs. We fixed it before....we will fix it again. Sincerely; Greg Hill for State Rep Carolyn Virtue for State Rep Jason Parent for State Rep Kathy Rago for State Senate

Belknap County Let’s Move On

On Thursday, August 27, Judge J a m e s O’Neill of the Belknap Superior Court decided in favor on all counts of the Belknap by Jane Cormier Convention Hooksett, NH. in their suit against the Belknap Commissioners. This suit was filed by the Chair and the Clerk of the Belknap Delegation due to the failure on the part of the Commissioners to follow the budget as voted by the Convention. The Convention, described as the Delegation, has the power under New Hampshire Statute Chapter 24:14, to specify the County budget in as much detail as it

may desire. There is now NO DOUBT as to the veracity of this fact. In response to the ruling, the Belknap County Commissioners filed a motion for reconsideration, a motion that was denied by Judge O’Neill. Instead of immediate complying with the Judge’s order, two weeks passed. On Sept. 15, the Executive Committee met to entertain the budgetary items which the Commissioners had to submit for approval to be in compliance with the judicial order. NO ONE from the Administration attended this meeting which further exacerbated an already difficult situation. The next “ploy” of the Commissioners was filed on September 23 when they asked the Judge to compel an emerSee cormier on 30

Can We End the Crazy Diversity Visa Lottery Yet? Ebola has reached our shores from Africa. Dozens of children are reportedly suffering paralysis from a deadly viby Michelle Malkin rus with unSyndicated Columnist known origins. Medical providers across the country have warned of a looming public health crisis as communicable diseases spread unmonitored and uncontrolled. Other countries are cracking down. But America is stuck on open-borders stupid. The Diversity Visa (DV) program, to take just one glaring example of government insanity, is still going. On October 1, the State Department opened the annual DV random lottery to applicants from around the world. Yes, it’s completely random like a Powerball drawing. Up to 55,000 lucky winners will snag permanent residency visas (green cards), which put them on the path to American citizenship ahead of millions of other foreigners patiently waiting to come to this country. The green card lotto winners’ spouses and unmarried children under 21 all get golden tickets into the country, too, no matter where they were born. Illegal aliens are eligible if a legal family member wins the jackpot. Applicants don’t even need a high school education. No outstanding abilities, training or job skills are necessary. A handful of countries are excluded if they no longer qualify as “underrepresented.” But if you come

from a terror-sponsoring or terror-friendly nation -- such as Iran, Syria, Sudan, North Korea and more than a dozen officially designated terror enablers on the State Department’s list -- no worries. Thousands from these breeding grounds for jihad will walk through our front doors. This is what happens when bipartisan panderers in Washington get their way. The visa lottery was championed by leftwing social engineer Sen. Ted Kennedy and signed into law by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 to admit more “underrepresented” immigrant minorities into the U.S. Although originally intended to give a leg up to Irish illegal aliens who had overstayed their visas, most of the winners now hail from non-Western terror hot spots and hostile territories. You know who else will get in? Untold numbers of “diversity” petitioners from Liberia, Sierra Leone and other West African countries where the Ebola virus is epidemic. If you think the feds will ensure that foreign visaseekers with communicable diseases stay out, think again. The State Department now allows applicants with HIV to apply and enter. Those who suffer from tuberculosis, leprosy or other afflictions “of public health significance” can apply for waivers. Reports indicate that before his departure from Liberia to Texas last week, Ebola carrier Thomas Duncan lied at the airport about being in contact with someone exposed to the disease. So far, the White House refuses to impose any travel restrictions from West Africa. It’s also not clear whether the U.S. has rescreened West Africans who won

Korean Reunification Awaits History’s Verdict UNITED NATIONS - “ T h i s

year marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But the Korean Peninsula by John J. Metzler remains stiSyndicated Columnist fled by a wall of division,” stated South Korean President Park Geun-hye. In a landmark address to the UN General Assembly, President Park made the bold assertion, “I call on the international community to stand with us in tearing down the world’s last remaining wall of division.” Stirring words. Stirring themes. Especially, punctuating the diplomatic drone of many of the General debate speeches. Though Park recalled, “The two Koreas were separately admitted as member states to the UN in 1991. Having two separate seats despite a single language, culture and history is clearly not normal. ” Since the end of WWII, the historic Korean nation has been divided by the demilitarized zone (DMZ) which has tragically become part of the national geography. The DMZ dividing South and North Korea is 4 km wide and 250 km long and while serving as the demarcation line, also has blocked the free flow of people for 60 years.

President Park presented a broad brush view of contemporary Korean history. “Once a country that barely managed to survive with the UN’s assistance, the Republic of Korea is today a nation that has achieved both an advanced market economy and democracy.” Yet the quaintly-titled Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) the North, remains a communist state which is both a threat to its own people and beyond, given the regime’s nuclear weapons program. The South Korean leader called for urgency in “resolving the North Korean nuclear issue, which presents the single greatest threat to peace on the Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia. “ She added, “The DPRK is the only country to have conducted a nuclear test in the 21st century.” This is a sobering reality. Naturally, North Korea’s abysmal human rights situation remains a key concern. She praised efforts by the UN Human Rights Council to keep the political light of transparency on the communist state. Not surprisingly, North Korea’s Foreign Minister did not agree. In a scornful rebuff, Ri Su Yong stated, “The nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula is a matter of sovereignty and right to life of a UN member state before peace and security. “ Foreign Minister Ri added, “The nuclear deterrent of the

DPRK is not intended to threaten or attack others. Neither is it a bargaining chip to be exchanged for something else.” Interestingly in his wide ranging discourse, the North Korean official only made one mention

of the “Great General Kim Jong il” and the current ruler, “the respected Marshall Kim Jong Un” once as well. Most DPRK speeches and documents usually constantly invoke the names

Random Thoughts R a n d o m thoughts on the passing scene: What a nonjudgmental society amounts to is that common decency is optional -by Thomas Sowell which means Syndicated Columnist that decency is likely to become less common. The biggest issue in this fall’s election is whether the Obama administration will end when Barack Obama leaves the White House or whether it will continue on, by appointing federal judges with lifetime appointments who share President Obama’s contempt for the Constitution. Whether such judges will be confirmed by the Senate depends on whether the Senate continues to be controlled by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid. Why in the world would any sane American go to North Korea and put themselves at the mercy of a crackpot dictator? Since Illinois enacted a law permitting more people to carry concealed firearms, more than 65,000 people got permits to do so. Rates of robbery, burglary and motor vehicle thefts have dropped significantly, and the murder rate has fallen to a level not seen in more than half a century. If only the gun control fanatics would pay some attention to facts, a lot of lives could be saved. If you took all the mumbojumbo out of our educational institutions, how much would be left? Students could finish their education years earlier and end up knowing a lot more than they know now. Why are Americans -- and

the Western world in general -- falling all over ourselves stifling our own self-expression to appease people who chose to immigrate here, and are now demanding the suppression of anything they don’t like, such as public expressions of Christianity or displays of the American flag? Someone should write a history of political rhetoric, if only to put us on our guard against being deceived into disasters. The First World War, for example, was said to be a war “to make the world safe for democracy.” What it actually led to was the replacement of despotic dynasties by totalitarian dictatorships that were far worse, including far more murderous. Professor Sterling Brown remains as much a hero to me in my old age as he was when I was a freshman at Howard University. He wrote bitterly eloquent attacks on racism -- and yet, when I was preparing to go off to Harvard, he said to me, “Don’t come back here and tell me you didn’t make it ‘cause white folks were mean.” The fatal weakness of most clever people is that they don’t know when to stop being clever. The past cleverness of President Obama is finally starting to catch up with him. Why Republicans would bring up the subject of immigration during an election year is beyond me. Yet Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner seems drawn to the subject like a moth to a flame. Who says the Obama administration is not transparent? They are constantly telling our enemies overseas when it will pull out our troops and where we will not put boots on the See Sowell on 31

Turkey Trot

Vintage Treasure for Your Home & Garden Janice McCarthy 603.528.5510

by Steve White Contributing Writer

There are some memories that never fade from one’s mind. As we get older, we tend to hold on to the special occasions that define a moment in time. Each season of change opens the gates to the reflections of the mind’s eye. Each year the flashbacks grow stronger until you wonder if the moment is a memory or occurring for the very first time. One cold fall morning many years ago, as my son Nicholas and I looked out the living room window at the bird feeders, oblong shapes appeared up on the hill on the other side of our ancient rock wall. Our property is fortunate to have boundaries marked by previous generations of pioneers who laid out the land in this wondrous fashion. We pressed our faces against the cold window glass as five, ten, fifteen and more wild turkeys slowly did their recognizable trot across the woodland floor, scratching at the layer of leaves as they fed on the abundance of natural food. They were unruffled by the morning sounds of automobiles, dogs barking in the distance and the usual scurrying of ground critters. We were fascinated at the obvious hierarchy, the constant line of birds, continuing towards the street. As they cautiously approached the road, they maintained their single file and headed towards the driveway. Just beyond, leaning against a huge boulder, was our Halloween scarecrow. We used

an old pair of trousers and a flannel shirt, stuffed with leaves to create the illusion of a resting human. When the lead turkey caught sight of this, it stopped abruptly. In rapid succession, each wild bird in the chorus line followed suit, creating a traffic jam. The turkeys displayed their own distress signs; wing flapping, short takeoffs, and quick step trotting. Then every bird froze. All necks stretched high. Time had stopped without a whisper of sound to be heard anywhere. Not one bird would cross the imaginary line of safety. Then, without warning, the lead bird turned tail and headed across the street into our neighbor’s yard. Each turkey followed this male tom, never wavering from the abstract demarcation that was left by the leader. My son and I remained at our post, relishing the moment as nature continued on its way. Each time I witness the flocking of wild turkeys on

our street, I remember this special moment with my son. It’s just another sign of age and experience that is part of the plan. It’s mine and mine alone to keep with me forever. When my son becomes a man and leaves the nest, I know he will create his own reflections of time with his children. I hope I am there to be a part of it. Enjoy your birds. Model airplane kits were made out of balsa wood instead of metal during the war.

For example, there is an EZ Bake oven and a pair of roller skates, toys from the era that, as simple as they may look, are amazing to see seventy years later since, as Schroeder will explain to the students, most toys were given up to be used as scrap metal to help the war effort, some-

thing that is often hard for the youth of today to contemplate. Schroeder explains that one of the reasons that early editions of comic books like “Superman” and “Batman” are so rare nowadays is because they were usually read and then thrown into the pile for a paper drive.

“Everything went towards the war effort,” said Schroeder. “Eighty-eight percent of all war materials used by our allies were made in the United States as well as one hundred percent of what we used.” Other home front artifacts in the trunk include: Special awards, designed by artists at The Disney

studio, given to children who contribute to War Bonds; dolls sent home from bases overseas and balsa wood model airplane kits and coin collections including a steel nickel (copper was a rarer metal and needed for the war effort). One interesting artifact and one, that for obvious reasons, isn’t shown to students but sometimes to older civic groups, is a Venereal Disease pamphlet that was created by Dr. Seuss himself, Theodor Seuss Geisel. As far as artifacts from

the war front, the “Travelling Trunk” contains some great examples of “Trench Art”. Using old ammunition shells of various sizes, soldiers created a variety of interesting sculptures and other pieces using only the few tools they had with them. “During war there is a lot of ‘hurry up and wait,’” said Schroeder. “Trench art started during World War One.” There is also what you might call an accidental sculpture. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, October 9, 2014

It’s Hard to Work with a Leader Who is Working Against You There is just a little over 3 weeks until our Day of Destiny. THAT day is Tuesday November 4. This is by Niel Young Advocates Columnist the day to stop B. Hussein Obama’s agenda for killing America. Will you join this grandfather of 11 in saving OUR country for them and yours, to live free, to prosper, in a safe America for many decades to follow? I am borrowing from The Weekly Standard excerpts titled “Obama to Immigration Activists: ‘No Force on Earth Can Stop Us. Yes, we can, if we vote!” by Daniel Halper. “A fired up President Barack Obama had a message to immigration activists at a dinner this evening in Washington, D.C.: ‘no force on earth can stop us.’ “The clearest path to change is to change [the voter turnout] number. Yes, we can, if we vote!” More Obama: “Each of us is called on to stand proudly for the values we believe in, and the future we seek. All of us have a chance to reach out and pull this country that we call home a little closer to its founding ideas. That’s the spirit that’s alive in this room. That’s the spirit I saw in Luis and Victor and all the young people here tonight. “That spirit is alive in America today, and with that spirit, no force on earth can stop us.” Questions for Barack. What values? Is he re-writing the US Constitution, or the Bill of Rights? Are Luis and Victor legal citizens of America? Where are all of these new voters coming from? I am sure the POTUS would not suggest

ILLEGALS should? ******** TED NUGENT, American rock musician, author, activist: “To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic?” ********* Don’t tell me that the GOP is the party of money. Kathy Rago (R-Franklin) is the Republican nominee for Senate District 7 and the person I know will be a Senator responsive to all people. Her opponent is wealthy and is not too interested in education for low income families. These are definitely tough times. Kathy and her husband are CPAs and have 3 children, two of which are attending UNH. You know her opponent - he is the politician who voted against allowing NH business people to donate part of their state taxes to help parents of lesser financial means to assist those parents who know their child would learn more in an alternative educational environment. This while Mr. Wealthy has 3 children in a private school, no darn government school for his children! “Common Core” forces kids to attend a government indoctrination center, and building the foundation for YOUR child – and unless you are wealthy, that is where the children stay for 12 years! ******** Most of the Republican candidates for anything hope they will not be asked about abortion during an interview. Yet for Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, Annie Kuster, and Carol Shea-Porter this is the main issue for them. They don’t hide. They support

the Planned Parenthood with our money. JEANNE SHAHEEN: “I’ve spent my career fighting for women’s health care and reproductive rights, and this November, we have decades of progress for women on the line. Scott Brown has voted to roll back that progress and supported almost every antichoice initiative in front of him; he co-sponsored and voted for the Blunt Amendment that would let bosses make decisions about their female employees’ health care, and this year, he applauded the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision. New Hampshire women can’t trust Scott Brown to stand up for their reproductive rights.” Scott Brown did not get my vote in the recent primary election. One reason was his stand on abortion! Sen. Shaheen if you are telling me that you are stronger on killing little innocent babies than Scott, at what point, do YOU stop at – age 14? After 6 years of supporting this gang of liars and criminals 99% of the time you share the blame for what B Hussein has done to bring OUR America to its knees. Do you realize what you have done? Brown gets my vote because he is NOT you. ******** JOSEPH SOBRAN (1946-2010) Columnist, former editor of National Review: “In the current political vocabulary, ‘need’ means wanting to get someone else’s money. ‘Greed,’ which used to mean what “need” now means, has come to mean wanting to keep your own. ‘Compassion’ means the politician’s willingness to arrange the transfer.”

plained earlier. You can do whatever you want. You can even write my name in. Have fun and don’t forget the nicknames. The amendments can be a bit tricky. They may even take you by surprise. You can read them but most likely they will make no sense since they are designed by lawyers. Even if you think you know what an amendment means you still may be confused on how to vote since sometimes a “yes vote really means “no and vice versa. I think they should have a box that says “I don’t get it and if that gets the majority of votes, it will need to be rewritten by a fifth grade social studies class so everyone can understand it next time. Still, you have to choose something. You could ask

the person in the next booth, but that is not recommended. After you are done, you bring your ballot over to a machine that looks suspiciously like a shredder where it’s either counted towards the democratic process or torn asunder to be used later for the Governor’s Inauguration Ball. Once you are done voting, you can now leave the Polling Place with your head held high, past the Poll Standers who really couldn’t care about you anymore now that you have already voted. Then it’s back to the rest of your day as you anxiously await the closing of the polls so you can spend the evening, bored to tears, watching the election results trickle in.

together and taken out of a burnt Sherman Tank. The trunk also contains a “Ruptured Duck” insignia that was worn for ninety-days by servicemen after the war. Worn on civilian clothes it showed that they had served their country. The trunk also contains a set of dog tags with the reality explained to the school students as to why two dog tags were needed. There is a lot more to the “Traveling Trunk” as well as stories by Dan Schroeder that are full of valuable material in helping those of all ages to understand the sacrifice of the Greatest Generation. “There were about thirteen million men and women in uniform during World War Two,” said Schroeder. “There were millions more at home who were doing their part as well. This was the generation that saved the world and their story should never be forgotten.” The “Traveling Trunk” presentation is free and available to all schools and civic groups. Each presentation lasts about an hour but Dan will be happy to streamline it to your groups needs. If you are interested in having the “Traveling Trunk” come to your school or hall, contact Donna Hamill at the Wright Museum at 603-569-1212.

Anne Frank: A History For Today Wright Museum’s Newest Exhibit Now Open Through Oct. 29th

The life story of Anne Frank is the centerpiece of this intriguing Wright Museum exhibition. The Frank family’s story reflects world events prior to, during, and after the period of the Nazi dictatorship, thereby introducing visitors to the history of WWI and WWII. The exhibit juxtaposes photographs of the Frank family with images of historical events at the time to show how persecuted people such as the Franks were affected by political decisions and the actions of individuals. Anne’s Diary of a Young Girl and the story of her life and death resonate with people of various ages and backgrounds. This exhibit allows visitors to consider the effects of prejudice, discrimination, hate and violence. Anne Frank: A History for Today is a powerful exhibition about a teenage girl whose strength and courage in the face of unimaginable evil remains relevant and inspirational. “Anne Frank: A History for Today” was developed by the Anne Frank House and is sponsored in North America by The Anne Frank Center USA. It runs through Thursday, October 29th. The Wright Museum will close for the season on October 31st.

Ask The Builder These 5 Tools Could Make Your Life Easier by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: I just sold some old stuff I no longer needed. My intent was to get cash together to add to my hoard of hand and power tools. Can you share some of the coolest tools you’re aware of? I’m interested in versatility and quality. If I need more cash, then I’ll sell more of my stuff! --Kevin F., Liberty, Maine DEAR KEVIN: You and I are doing the same thing! I’ve been trying to de-clutter my garage and attic, and I’m making progress! It’s funny that what I feel is junk or of little value to me is worth much to someone else. I’m having great success with the storied online classified website Craigslist.org. The founder and I used to be part of a secret mastermind group, and I saw this website when it first launched. I could go on and on about all sorts of new tools, as I get to see so many each year. That’s the problem for me. I see so many, I don’t know where to start, but I’ll give it my best shot. 1. Cordless circular saw

If you’re looking to expand your collection of power tools, these five tools will not disappoint you. Clockwise from top left: Milwaukee 7-1/4 M18 FUEL Circular Saw; DeWalt DC821B 18-volt impact wrench; Klein Tools Long-Nose All-Purpose Pliers with Cutter and Stripper; Bosch GLM15 Laser Distance Measurer; Milwaukee Tools 10 in 1 MultiBit Driver. One of the coolest tools I saw at a recent conference is a cordless 7-1/4-inch circular saw. Smaller diameter cordless saws have been on the market for years, and some cut fairly well but overall were a disappointment to me. When you increase the blade diameter, you need more power to spin the blade to cut through thick material. Milwaukee Tools has developed a cordless circular saw I tested, and I was blown away by what it could cut. The reason the newer cordless tools are able to work as hard as traditional cordless tools lies in both the batteries and

the onboard computers in the tools that manage the power to the tool. The microprocessors ensure the power in the batteries is not wasted. 2. Combination pliers/ wire stripper/cable cutter If you dabble in electric repairs around your home, then you’re going to love the all-purpose pliers I now use made by Klein Tools. This precision hand tool combines a wire stripper, a needlenose pliers and a cable cutter! In the past I used three tools to cut a romex cable, strip the insulation from the wires then bend the wire tip to go around

the screws on outlets and switches. No more! This all-purpose pliers does all three jobs. 3. Cordless impact driver Another cordless power tool you may want, but don’t currently own, is an impact driver. This tool used to be just found in an auto mechanic’s garage. You’ve seen or heard them used when they rat-a-tat-tat the lug nuts on your car or truck wheels. In repair shops these tools are almost always driven by compressed air. A few years back, however, some crafty power tool engineers decided to bring these impact drivers into the construction field and power them with batteries. The first time I used one, my jaw dropped. The tool drives screws, bolts and tightens nuts with speed and precision. You’ll simply not believe how versatile an impact driver is. All of the major power tool companies make these. I

seem to favor my DeWalt 18-volt impact driver, but I’ve had great success with the Bosch and Milwaukee brands too. 4. Laser measuring tool You’ve seen the laser measuring tools, right? Well, how about one that’s tiny, fits in your pocket and has but one button that controls all the functions? And you want it to be accurate within an 1/8 inch in 50 feet? You need to try out the Bosch GLM 15. I got this tool about two months ago, turned it on and used a traditional tape measure to test it for all sorts of distances. It was extremely accurate. There are all sorts of uses for it around the home, including taking simple room measurements, finding floor to ceiling height in seconds, and taking diagonal room measurements to check for square. 5. Multi-bit screwdriver Sometimes I prefer to use a traditional screwdriver for a job. Multi-bit screwdrivers are not new by any means. I’ve tested many and always wanted one that had a certain heft and ergonomic design. What I’ve come to discover is that since each person’s hands are not the same size, it’s hard for a tool manufacturer to satisfy everyone. What feels right in my

hand may feel too big or small in your hand. Well, Milwaukee Tools didn’t disappoint me. They came out with a multi-bit screwdriver that has seven bits, six of them stored in the outer edges of the tool handle. Each bit is about 3.5 inches long and connects to the tool handle with a strong magnet. There’s little wiggle between the bits and the handle. That’s important to me because I want the tool to be steady when in use. The bit steel is also tough and fits nicely in slotted or Phillips screw heads. This multi-bit screwdriver is front-and-center on my metal pegboard made by Wall Control that’s just behind my workbench in my garage. Don’t forget that you need a tool storage solution that looks great and is highly functional. That’s why I use metal pegboard! Need an answer? Kris Eschbach of Newbury, scrambles on the upper ledges on the Blueberry Ledge Trail. We certainly didn’t take the easy way to Mount Passaconaway. We climbed the almost vertical Tom Wiggin Trail to the Blueberry Ledge Trail, the Rollins Trail over Mount Whiteface and along the edge of the Bowl before reaching Mount Passaconaway’s summit.

We turned right up the Square Ledge Branch and instead of continuing up to Square Ledge we went south and did a loop following a piece of the Walden Trail and then north up the rest of the Oliverian Brook Trail. We enjoyed the pretty woods and the cascading brook while hiking a few extra miles trying to kill time to let the clouds clear. But by the time we repeated up the Branch, the weather was worse. I tried not to be sad that we were headed

Sharon looks across the Bowl at Mount Whiteface on our way to Mount Passaconaway on the Rollins Trail. The Bowl’s steep rim is formed by the main ridge of Mount Whiteface and the south ridge of Mount Passaconaway. Thanks to Kate Sleeper and the Wonalancet Out Door Club, the Bowl was never logged before becoming part of the White Mountain National Forest in 1914. into a wet cloud. The trail climbed along the side of the big wild looking ledges and at the outlooks we peered into swirling whiteness that sometimes produced a dark outline of a nearby peak. Laura was amused that I still wanted to bushwhack to the top of the ledges and to the highpoint. By the time we scrambled up the summit loop to Passaconaway we had put on all the clothing we had brought along. The wind was cold and the 0% chance had turned into 100% precipitation. On the wooded summit, we met a few other hikers and they felt the same about the lousy weather

and no visibility from any outlook. We descended via the Dicey’s Mill Trail and the East Loop’s more gradual graded paths back to the Walden Trail to the Passaconaway Cutoff. We were soaked by the time we got back to the car. Changing into a dry shirt felt good and we looked forward to getting back to the house. While we were running around in the wet forest, Charlie used up a lot of our tomatoes making chili! He served us the hot spicy soup and it was a fine feast and a good way to wrap up our adventure. the Wonalancet Out Door Club’s most famous trailhead at Ferncroft Road. We had made plans long ago to hike Whiteface and Passaconaway. I had hoped that Sharon and Sarah would be able to join us but plans got mixed up and now I would be right back here on Sunday with them. Kris and I headed up the Dicey’s Mill Trail almost two miles and then went left up the Tom Wiggin Trail. According to the AMC guidebook, it is sometimes called the “Fire Escape because it goes straight up like a ladder. The trail doesn’t see a lot of use due to the guidebook’s warning and the trailhead sign’s dire warning—Not Recommended Steep and Loose!

The brook crossing was easily rock hop-able and then we climbed straight up for a mile. The trail didn’t seem that rough or loose and we enjoyed going up the wall of the Bowl. Nearing the intersection of the popular Blueberry Ledge Trail the hemlock branches crowded the trail camouflaging its existence. I noticed the Wiggin Trailhead sign was also hidden away from the intersection in an attempt to hide this trail and to discourage its use. Not a bad idea since going down Wiggins might be one long butt slide and cause erosion on this difficult steep mile! We scrambled up the Blueberry Ledge Trail to Whiteface’s famous ledges and enjoyed its fine vista.

of the Marxist monarchy ruling this neo-Stalinist land. Also too no mention of the dictatorial dynasty’s founder Kim Il-sung, always a standard rhetorical honorific in the chorus of regime adulation. Both North Korea’s nuclear issue and human rights conditions remain serious obstacles in dealing with the isolated regime, especially for South Korea. Yet, prosperous South Korea, ever hopeful, calls on its impoverished and isolated cousins to forsake nuclear weapons and come in from the cold. Should the DPRK choose reform and opening, the Seoul government “together with the international community,

will provide our strong support for developing the DPRK economy. Political decompression leading to reunification is something President Park is pushing for as to lessen the humanitarian anguish of the northern cousins as much as to diminish the military threat to South Korea’s cosmopolitan society on as much as to finally seal the deal on peninsular reunification. Visiting Germany earlier this year, Park Geunhye admired many of the places connected with that nation’s peaceful unification nearly a quarter century ago. Addressing the UN, Park opined, “A unified Korea will be the starting point for a world without nuclear weapons, offer a fundamental solution to the North Korean human rights issue, and help

unlock a stable and cooperative Northeast Asia. Speaking hopefully, Park extolled, “Just as the unification of Germany laid the grounds for a new Europe by integrating Europe, a unified Korea will set in motion a new Northeast Asia. Given the DPRK regime’s decrepit state, President Park’s wish could come sooner than she may think. Yet, even few optimists would wish to calculate the real cost and sacrifice for South Koreans to see through the price of national reunification. John J. gency meeting of the Convention. The judge declined this request citing there was no evidence of bad faith on the part of the Convention. He remarked this would present a conflict of the separation of powers. The Commissioners dropped their demand for an emergency fund totaling $617,872.20 and instead asked for a mere $455,500.00. The Powers That Be said this was necessary to ensure that the Sheriff’s Department, Jail and Nursing Home could run until September 29. Rep. Tilton agreed to convene a meeting of the Executive committee on September 26 to consider another request from the Commissioners for the emergency transfer of approximately $10,000 for inmates in the County Jail to have “sufficient medication to last until a meeting of the Executive committee on September 29. At the 9/26 meeting, Rep. Tilton asked the County Administration why twenty days passed without a request for transfers. Commissioner Nedeau responded “Let’s move on. Now, this is something we can agree on. “Let’s move on. Let’s move on with accountable, ethical leadership. Let’s move on and stop act-

ground. Heartening as it has been to see Derek Jeter get farewell honors during his last season, as with Mariano Rivera last season, it is also a melancholy thought that we may not see their like again -- in their personal dignity and class, as well as their performance on the field. They are throwbacks to an earlier time, in a sports world of spoiled brat showoffs today. I must have heard the word “diversity” proclaimed in ringing tones as a great benefit to society at least a thousand times -- and probably closer to a million -without even once hearing a speck of evidence provided, or even suggested as a way to test whether that is true or false. Attorney General Eric Holder has picked the perfect time to resign, in terms of his own self-interest. He will have two years in which to cash in with lucrative fees on the lecture circuit and

to make a big-bucks book deal. If he waited until the end of the Obama administration, a former Attorney General would be eclipsed in both respects by a former President of the United States, thereby reducing the demand for Holder. With the momentous consequences of control of the Senate at stake in this fall’s election, anyone who risks the outcome by running as a third party candidate should not only be voted against this year but remembered for such irresponsibility in future years. last year’s DV game and are flying into the country now. As I’ve reported for the past 12 years, enforcement and screening procedures are shoddy. The General Accounting Office deemed the DV program a national security risk in 2008, while State Department and Homeland Security officials blamed each other for reckless incompetence. “Consular officers at six of the posts reviewed -- Accra (Ghana), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kathmandu (Nepal), Lagos (Nigeria) and Warsaw (Poland) -- reported that the availability of fake documents, or genuine documents with false information, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and passports, presented significant challenges when verifying DV applicants’ identities and the relationship between the principle DV applicants and their spouse and dependents,” the GAO

reported. The Diversity Visa lottery program is a public health hazard and a national security risk that leaves our safety to random chance. But pleas to curtail or end the program since the 9/11 attacks have fallen on deaf ears. In the wake of the Ebola scare (not to mention renewed jihadi threats from abroad), worried Americans are heading to the drugstore to stock up on facemasks, hand sanitizer and gloves. New vaccines are in the works for emerging global contagions. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for our government’s blind and deadly diversity worship. Political correctness is a plague on us all. Hikers can be fooled by the ledges and think they have reached the top of the mountain but Whiteface’s true heavily wooded summit is another third of a mile up the Rollins Trail. A small cairn on the side of the trail marks the summit. Kris and I continued our adventure up Passaconaway and by the time we hit the summit the visibility was even clearer. We could see everything I had hoped Laura would see—Mount Washington, the Franconia Range and more. Kris decided to stay above on a nice lookout rock while I dashed down the rugged side path to the infrequently visited north view that was one part of the long-abandoned closed Downs Brook Slide Trail. I happily went down for a third of a mile and it was

worth the effort. Kris and I felt so wonderful we decided to descend a longer route via the Walden Trail and Old Mast Road. We took all the short spur trails to some terrific viewpoints and we had to go on all fours to descend some of the steep ledgy sections. The Old Mast Road was a gentle way to end our outing. I can’t say I have even been on any summit that

603.526.6200

didn’t involve a chairlift ride three times in a nearly a week. I met Sarah and Sharon at the Ferncroft Road parking area where we left one car and then enjoyed the luxury of a car ride to the trailhead on the Whiteface Intervale Road a few miles away and there was only one other car in this lot, the Ferncroft lot was crowded. The three of us headed up the Flat Mountain Pond Trail to intersect with the McCrillis Trail, we were blessed with a lovely day. This trail is lightly used and has a nice soft foot bed. We hiked through marvelous forest. We enjoyed the morning’s cooler temperatures but by the time we neared the Whiteface’s summit it was downright hot. This trail may be a little longer but it involves much less ledge scrambling and its grades are moderate. We ate like kings on Whiteface’s ledges and took in the grand vista. Unlike a few day before we weren’t alone, there were at least a dozen other hikers here. The three of us took our time crossing the Rollins Trail. Sarah and Sharon were very taken by the view down into the Bowl but they were wary walking on the rim’s edge. A few times Sarah thought it was a scary sight to see

how far it was straight down to the bottom. Passaconaway’s summit was nice and again we enjoyed our pack food and had a nice conversation with two Dartmouth College boys. They were closing in on finishing the 48 mountains on the 4000 footer list, only the Bonds and Owl’s Head were left. Now Sharon and Sarah have only 15 left on their list. We descended via the most direct and popular route, the Dicey’s Mill Trail. The 4.6 miles takes time and my friends thought the last two miles seemed to go on forever. I confessed I felt the same way but told them it was funny that it had felt like no time at all when Kris and I went up these same two miles to meet the Wiggin Trail. In eight days I made three wonderful trips up Passaconaway with great friends. Each outing followed a different route and had greatly different weather conditions. Have Fun.
