A Meeting With Senator Ted Cruz

Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz takes a question from Weirs Times publisher Bob Lawton during a recent editorial board meeting. This year’s party could be the biggest in years as it falls on the same day as Laconia’s first ever Pumpkin Festival as well as various other related events happening throughout the area. “We always anticipate a big and happy crowd,” said Funspot owner and General Manager Bob Lawton, A lot of planning and preparation always

It’s a great thing that the people in New Hampshire really take their politics seriously and spend a lot of time vetting the candidates and it is very much doing a national service. publican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz. A true student and scholar of the U.S. Constitution, Cruz is adamant in his fight as a senator to stop what he calls the lawlessness of the Obama Administration and democrats as they pursue their agenda while ignoring the Constitution and the laws of the land. In the short time we had with Senator Cruz, he articulated very clearly who he is and what he stands for and why he feels he is truly the most conservative candidate running for the Republican nomination. Carson Deserves Our Praise To The Editor: “Do not go gentle into that good night but rage, rage against the dying of the light. - Dylan Thomas That is just what retired Army veteran Chris Mintz did as the mass murderer was killing and wounding students at an Oregon college. He rushed the killer, getting wounded several times and likely saving more students from injury and death. In Lt. Col. David Grossman’s very instructive book, “On Combat, he mentions the “sheepdog. “It can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed. Now, many of us are not able to combine aggressive courage with a relentless love of country and freedom. However, what Dr. Ben Carson said in making his generalized comment, is that we can all at least try to be mentally prepared to react the way Chris did. How the many can overwhelm the attacker so that less harm and death will come to the whole group. Of course, none of us actually knows how we would react in such a life or death situations. Training, nature and our innate fight or fight response will factor into that equation. But, isn’t Lou Dobbs correct when he asserts that congratulations should go out to Dr. Carson for wanting citizens to think about how they would

react to a life threatening situation? The corrosive, leftist leaning mainstream media immediately concluded that Dr. Carson was purposely being insensitive toward the victims and survivors. The progressive left proves once again that it is loathe to believe that this country’s citizens can be self-reliant and being willing to sacrifice. Oh no, their socialist proclivities believe that government reliance, dependency and victimhood are what a society should embrace in their “sheepish, utopian and pacifist world. Lou Dobbs goes on to say that Dr. Carson’s “action over acquiescence should inspire all of us rather than frighten us. Lou wonders if there are enough of us who still feel that this country stands for independence, selfreliance and sacrifice. I think that we still do, though I admit we may be nearing the tipping point. That point where acquiescence and dependence supersedes the glorious “live free or die attitude that has been imbued within our psyche since the dawn of our Constitutional Republic. There is one phrase that made a huge impact on me years ago when I decided to take a perilous internal journey when life was looking particularly bleak. “What goes on around you - - - - compares little with what goes on inside you. - Ralph Waldo Emerson. That is true of all of us individually and pain-

fully true for all of us as a country today. We must decide if we still want to be that courageous and compassionate beacon on the hill or if we will give in to the progressive left. The side that threatens to fundamentally transform us into just one more powerful country that thought it could survive the ravages of the totalitarian socialists. My daily prayer is that we as citizens will not let the light of liberty flicker and die and that we will “rage against the dying of the light. Are you with me, Dr. Carson, Lou Dobbs, Chris Mintz and all of our soldier “sheepdogs? Remember, the wolves are at our door. Russ Wiles Tilton, NH.

Putin It To Obama To The Editor: President Putin just put it to President Obama concerning the situation in Syria. They had a discussion about military involvement in Syria, and Putin convinced Obama the Russian air units in Syria would help with attacks on ISIL. However, Putin never considered attacking ISIL because his military forces are in Syria to bolster the Assad regime, and therefore they are bombing the U.S. backed anti-Assad rebels; and Russian ground forces are attacking the anti-Assad forces. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Tenth Time Is The Charm

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Now that the race for governor of New Hampshire is wide open, I’m feeling pretty confident about my chances this year. This year marks a very special and emotional campaign for me. This will be my tenth consecutive attempt at winning that corner office at the State House. (I hear the bathrooms are spectacular, but that may be just a rumor.) I will call this my decennial campaign. It has a nice patriotic ring to it. In the past, I have used a variety of unique campaign strategies that have not worked, which is obvious since if I did I wouldn’t be here typing this but would now still be governor, or maybe even senator or even running for president of the United States. (Well, at the very least I’d be out on a very successful tour promoting my latest book with some catchy title like “Me The People that would make it obvious I would like to be president someday.) This year’s campaign, which I’m pretty sure will be my last if I don’t win, will be looking to build a wider tent of support, bringing people into my fold that would never have considered joining me before. I am calling it “A Campaign Of Promises. The only way to do that is to promise really big things, something for ev-

eryone. It doesn’t matter that I may never be able to accomplish these things once elected, it’s just giving people a sense of what could be (but probably won’t) that stirs their emotions and gets their vote. First off, I am going to use a campaign strategy I used years ago. It got me a few votes and will probably again. Now that selfies in the voting booth are legal here in New Hampshire, I will hold a contest on election day. Every photo sent to me showing a write-in vote for me will be entered in a drawing if I win. The grand prize will be a 64inch HD Smart TV, with two year subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. (You can win a new subscription in the next election). For those of you who are disgusted at the idea of me bribing people to get their vote on election day, I truly understand, that is why I am promising the following things that might persuade you to cast your ballot for me all the same. I will have the New Hampshire Lottery Commission adjust their scratch tickets so that they pay out even better odds so that it will take even longer for you to lose your money and giving you a satisfying but false sense of prosperity. (Who wouldn’t love that?) I will make it mandatory that all state representatives be required to carry extra change with them and be available 24/7 when called by a constituent who just pulled into the vacuum stall at the local car wash, went to the bill changer to get quarters, only to find out it is out of order and not an attendant in site. (I hate that!!) State senators will also be required to take phone

calls from constituents not just to give their canned answers to state issues but to also provide information on five-day weather forecasts as well as helping with technical issues you might be having with your home computer. I will have Skype installed in voting booths so that voters can contact friends and family to help them figure out just what the heck those ridiculously worded amendments on the ballot really mean. I would also like to see local restaurants hired to set up mini bars at polling places to soothe the crowds while the booths are tied up with folks Skyping. (Free soft drinks for those 18-20.) I will have state liquor store employees, who are now required to use a book to suggest to customers drink ideas in helping them make a selection, also now explain to customers different foods and recipes to complement each liquor and wine as well as suggesting a good movie to watch after dinner. This is just a very small sampling of some of the great ideas I will be running on in this “Campaign Of Promises. I am not going to give you them all here since I keep coming up with new ones every day, but they will all be available in my soon to be published pamphlet entitled: “Something For Everyone. Campaign Promises For The People. I am looking forward to this decennial campaign. This is my time, I have waited long enough. Brendan is the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles and “Best Of A F.O.O.L. In New Hampshire which are available at www.BrendanTSmith. com

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, October 22, 2015

Obama Lied, My Health Plan Died ... Twice! It’s deja screwed all over again. In the fall of 2013, our family received notice from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of by Michelle Malkin Colorado that we could no Syndicated Columnist longer keep our private health insurance plan because of “changes from health care reform (also called the Affordable Care Act or ACA).” We liked our high-deductible Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan that allowed us to choose from a wide range of doctors. But Obamacare wouldn’t let us keep it. Reluctantly, and after great bureaucratic difficulty, my hubby and I enrolled in an individual market plan with Rocky Mountain Health, which offered a much narrower provider network than the Anthem PPO plan we had before the feds snuffed it out. Thanks to “reform,” our two kids’ dental care was no longer covered, and we had our post-Obamacare insurance turned down at an urgent care clinic -- something that had never happened before. This summer came another bombshell. In August, we were informed of the “discontinuation of your Rocky Mountain Individual and Family plan effective December 31, 2015.” Over the past month, we have received several bold-faced notices alerting us that “IMPORTANT ACTION IS REQUIRED: YOU MUST CHOOSE A NEW INDIVIDUAL & FAMILY PLAN TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH COVERAGE IN 2016.” The clock is ticking: open enrollment begins Nov. 1. The coerced choices are pretty

damned crummy. Individual market PPOs have evaporated. We are being shoved once again toward the Obamacare government health insurance exchange vortex known as Connect for Health Colorado (which should really be called “DISconnect from Health Colorado). Or into a narrow regional HMO. So much for “If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what,” eh, Mr. President? Obama lied and our health plan has now died -- twice. “Progressives” sneered at millions of us who received the first round of individual market health plan death notices. Mother Jones called it the “phony canceled health insurance scandal” when I first reported my 2013 health plan homicide by Obamacare. But it’s real, it sucks, and we know we are not alone among the estimated 22 million other Americans who purchase health insurance directly on the ever-shrinking individual market. In Illinois, Blue Cross announced it was eliminating its most popular individual plan with the largest network of doctors and hospitals of any of its offerings, Blue PPO. More than 170,000 enrollees will have to scrounge up an alternative. Customers are panicking, and insurance broker Mike Troha told the Chicago Tribune last week: “I wouldn’t be shocked if all the PPOs are gone in a few years in the individual markets.” Last month, the Maryland Insurance Administration approved premium rate increases for small group and individual health insurance plans effective next year, with some rates spiking by double digits thanks to “significant changes

The House Republican Meltdown

At least they aren’t brawling the way they do in the South Korean parliament -at least not yet. by Rich Lowry House RepubSyndicated Columnsit. licans have over the past month seen their speaker, John Boehner, announce his imminent resignation under pressure and his heir apparent, Kevin McCarthy, suddenly give up on trying to succeed him -- all while the party enjoys a comfortable majority and faces no external threat from Democrats. The Republican nervous breakdown is entirely self-inflicted. Understanding the House caucus is less Politics 101 than scorpions in a bottle. The right of the caucus hates and distrusts the leadership, while most of the rest of the caucus hates and See malkin on 26 distrusts the right, and no one

has the standing to bring all sides together in a semblance of unity. With McCarthy, the current majority leader, shocking the political world by giving up his speaker bid, it’s not clear who can pick up the pieces. Some even speculate (although this is far-fetched) that Republicans will have to go to Democrats to forge a bipartisan coalition to fill the office, which would be a humbling concession that Republicans aren’t capable of governing the House on their own. McCarthy is a pol’s pol who has good personal relations with other Republicans. He had a strong majority of the caucus backing him for speaker, but that wasn’t enough. He needed to get 218 votes on the House floor, a threshold that gave the several dozen members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus the ability to block See lowry on 25

UN Security Council’s Musical Chairs UNITED NAT I O N S —In its

annual selection process, the full General Assembly has picked five countries to serve as nonby John J. Metzler p e r m a n e n t Syndicated Columnist members on the UN Security Council. Importantly, Egypt, Japan and Ukraine as well as Senegal and Uruguay were chosen as the new members who will serve two year terms on the powerful fifteen-member Security Council. Though none of the seats faced elections this year, the process of diplomatic musical chairs allows for both regional representation as well as all countries to have an opportunity to serve on and influence Council proceedings. Thus each year, five states are selected/ elected among the UN’s 193 members. The countries participate alongside the permanent members Mainland China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States. So let’s take a look at the new members representing the regional groups. Africa: Egypt has been selected for a seat. Though a UN founding member and a political powerhouse in the Arab world, surprisingly the Cairo government has not had held the coveted Council seat this century; the last time

Egypt was on the Council was back in the 1990’s . Egypt’s political importance is unquestioned; the country hosts the regional Arab League. Egypt’s government under General al-Sisi has played a key role against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Islamic extremism throughout the Middle East. Senegal a West African democracy was selected too. A close ally of France and a prominent member of the Francophone group of French-speaking states, Senegal plays a positive regional role. Egypt and Senegal will replace Chad and Nigeria soon leaving the Council. Asia: Japan has been re-elected to a non-permanent role to the Council. Japan, the second largest donor state to the United Nations, has been a regular rotating Council member and served as recently as 2010. Though Japan remains committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes, global development, and foreign economic assistance, Japan’s government has taken a more robust political posture in a number of disputes with Mainland China. Japan replaces Jordan whose tenure was marked by astute and pro-active diplomacy. Latin America/Caribbean states: Here’s a surprise. After fifty years, Uruguay is back on the Council. Uruguay, a Latin American democracy, was last on the decision making body in its 1965-66 session. Though largely in the shadow of Latin American

giants such as Argentina and Brazil, little Uruguay nonetheless has been a major contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Chile, a regional democracy, is exiting the Council at year’s end. Eastern Europe: In what’s a

surprise, Ukraine wins the Eastern European seat. Though serving on the Council in 2001, Ukraine was not then in a politico/military conflict with neighboring Russia, a veto holding Permanent

The ‘Gun Control’ Farce President Obama’s intrusion into the mourning community of Roseburg, Oregon, in order to promote his political crusade for stronger gun by Thomas Sowell control laws, Syndicated Columnist is part of a pattern of his using various other sites of shooting rampages in the past to promote this long-standing crusade of the political left. The zealotry of gun control advocates might make some sense if they had any serious evidence that more restrictive gun control laws actually reduce gun crimes. But they seldom even discuss the issue in terms of empirical evidence. Saving lives is serious business. But claiming to be saving lives and refusing to deal with evidence is a farce. Nor is the Second Amendment or the National Rifle Association the real issue, despite how much the media and the intelligentsia focus on them. If there is hard evidence that stronger gun control laws actually reduce gun crimes in general or reduce murders in particular, the Second Amendment can be repealed, as other Amendments have been repealed. Constitutional Amendments exist to serve the people. People do not exist to be sacrificed to Constitutional Amendments. But if hard evidence shows that restrictions on gun ownership lead to more gun crimes, rather than less, then the National Rifle Association’s opposition to those restrictions makes sense, independently of the Second Amendment. Since this all boils down to a question of hard evidence about

plain facts, it is difficult to understand how gun control laws should have become such a heated and long-lasting controversy. There is a huge amount of statistical evidence, just within the United States, since gun control laws are different in 50 different states and these laws have been changed over time in many of these states. There are mountains of data on what happens under restrictive laws and what happens when restrictions are lifted. Statistics on murder are among the most widely available statistics, and among the most accurate, since no one ignores a dead body. With so many facts available from so many places and times, why is gun control still a heated issue? The short answer is that most gun control zealots do not even discuss the issue in terms of hard facts. The zealots act as if they just know -- somehow -- that bullets will be flying hither and yon if you allow ordinary people to have guns. Among the many facts this ignores is that gun sales were going up by the millions in late 20th century America, and the murder rate was going down at the same time. Among the other facts that gun control zealots consistently ignore are data on how many lives are saved each year by a defensive use of guns. This seldom requires actually shooting. Just pointing a loaded gun at an assailant is usually enough to get him to back off, often in some haste. There have been books and articles based on voluminous statistics, including statistics comparing gun laws and gun crime rates in different countries, such as “Guns and Violence” by Professor Joyce Lee Malcolm of George Mason University. Seldom do these factual studies back up what the See Sowell on 26

Kennett Students, Free Speech, I Support You! D a i l y Mail: Democratic National Committeewoman says her party is ‘clearing a path’ for by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Hillary because ‘the women in charge’ want it that way. She rattled off a list of women at the top of the party hierarchy and said two vice chairs helped craft a decision this summer to favor Clinton. The committeewoman warned her party could promote Hillary ‘because she’s a woman, and risk having her implode after she’s nominated’. ******** Yup, I am right again. This is the “Stupid Party”. The republicans, that is the “Establishment types”, the make believe candidates, and those ever so important office holders who are interested in longevity; never mind the country and its people! ******** RNC Chairman Priebus: “However, I think that we have become, unfortunately, a midterm party that doesn’t lose and a presidential party that’s had a really hard time winning. We’re seeing more and more that if you don’t hold the White House, it’s very difficult to govern in this country — especially in Washington D.C.” “So I think that — I do think that we’re cooked as a party for quite a while if we don’t win in 2016. So I do think that it’s going to be hard to dig out of something like that, I don’t anticipate that. I think ... history is on our side.” Not that dirty politics have never been used by republicans, but in a time where real republi-

cans are shunned by the Establishment and those who believe they truly are important in the world of politics, they made it clear that the Tea Party was no longer a help in victories the GOP showed their appreciation. It’s been said that desperate times call for desperate measures. It looks like Jeb Bush is truly desperate after the most recent attack on Donald Trump. ******** Okay, here is the short version. Not sure the main stream press will report on the following in capsule form. Trump was speaking at the “No Labels Problem Solver Convention” lead by extremely moderate former Utah governor Jon Huntsman. A young woman in the audience had some questions for Donald. She wanted to know if he is “anti-women” – equality in wages, and yes, the abortion issue (it is her body). This young woman had some snide remarks. Not sure the NH press will report that the young lady is Lauren Batchelder who is on loan from Kelly Ayotte’s office to the Jeb! campaign. Trump defended himself, but that didn’t stop CNN from compiling a ridiculous hit piece attacking the candidate. Some quotes are from American Thinker. ******** Plato (429-347 BC) “The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs, is to be ruled by evil men.” Richard Henry Lee (1732-1794 Founding Father): “A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms.” Marilyn vos Savant Columnist for Parade maga-

zine: “What is the essence of America? Finding and maintaining that perfect, delicate balance between freedom ‘to’ and freedom ‘from’.” As we move closer to Thanksgiving let us read these words often in preparing for what will come next from the evil tyrant. In between we will honor the Veteran, who to this point have protected us, and brought freedom to other lands, without asking for anything in return! ******* I am following what I consider a First Amendment problem in Conway, NH. The report by The Conway Daily Sun (Lloyd Jones) tells us that 40 or more students at Kennett High School are exercising their Freedom of Speech in an orderly way. Student Tyler Morin displays both the American and Confederate flags on his pickup truck. School officials oppose the flags being displayed (on his truck) are not welcome on school property. This is an interesting read. There was a time when Americans were burning their draft cards, bras, and it was okay. Are students of today really learning about US History? Or do we just brush over Civics and History? Are the government schools (indoctrination centers) a substitute for actual learning? How are the students learning about our history; what made us great, and what was not so great about our America? Great topic for The Advocates radio program. Saturday podcast is at wezs.com beginning with Hour 1 to hear our discussion.

At one point there was a fire tower on Mount Dustan, elevation 2,878 feet, but we found no artifacts. The trailhead parking areas in far Northern New Hampshire, even on this busy holiday weekend, only had a car or two. The roads were empty and the leaves were more bright and colorful than they were a few hours south back home. Bryan and I met in the Gorham Wal-Mart parking lot and I drove us straight up Route 16 and somewhere past Errol he directed me to turn into a logging road smack in the middle of a wildlife refuge. The rig bounced up the road and after few miles I pulled it into an old log landing area rather than risk getting stuck. After looking at the map and taking a reading, Bryan adjusted his compass. then we donned our packs and headed up the road. We bushwhacked our way up the west side of Mount

DEAR TIM: I live in a condo with an attached garage. The current garage door insulation is rated at R-4. Even with that it’s cold in the winter and hot as Hades in the summer. Local companies have given me estimates to increase the insulation by installing a new door. This would cost over $1,000. I’ve seen kits that allow you to add insulation to the inside of the door for one-tenth the cost of a new door. Are they worth the price? Will the kit last? Will it fall off the door onto my new car when the door is in the up position? What would you do? --Darla J., Findlay, Ohio DEAR DARLA: I know all about cold and hot garages. My current home has a large three-car garage that’s attached to the house with a small connector hallway. My previous home had a very large garage that was 95 percent detached from my home. Even though the walls and ceilings of both are insulated, they still aren’t comfortable when the temperatures get extreme. I think many people expect too much from insulation. Based on the con-

You may think it’s a good idea to insulate a garage door. As always, you need to do the math. stant flow of emails I get, it seems that many feel if something is insulated, then that means the space will be comfortable almost all the time. What you, and others, need to know about insulation is that it simply slows the transfer of heat. Heat wants to travel rapidly from where it’s hot to where it’s cold. This is one of the simple laws of thermodynamics you may have studied in high school physics. The rate of heat transfer is the R number you referenced. The higher that number, the better the insulating material performs at slowing down the heat transfer. A product with a rating of R-38 will retain heat much longer than a product that has a rating of R-5. The issue with most garages is they’re not heated or cooled. Very few people can afford to spend the

design, build or remodel your dream home

money to pump heat or air conditioning into a garage to keep them the same temperature as the inside of a house. Because of this, garages tend to act much like outdoor sheds. What little heat there is in a garage eventually starts to transfer through the walls and ceiling to where it’s cooler. This means as you go from summer to winter and your garage is not heated at some point your garage is just a few degrees warmer than the outside air temperature. The actual temperature of your garage in the winter depends on many things. For example, how well is the garage door weatherstripped? Are there other air leaks around the walls or ceiling of the garage? How much heat from your house or condo leaks into your garage? How often See builder on 18

BASKETBALL, GOLF, AND NANTUCKET Sports bring people together. The Olympic Games unite countries. High school tournaments unite towns. And golf can reunite college alums, friends, and teammates―also affectionately known as “cronies.” Such a reunion occurred for me during Columbus Day weekend. The common denominator was basketball and the common destination was Nantucket Island, where an old hoop teammate named Billy runs a successful business. The common mission included talking sports, watching sports, and playing golf. Nantucket’s location in the North Atlantic necessitated a lengthy boat trip. So for me the first leg meant a Thursday trip to Cape Cod and a night with my friend John, another hoop “crony,” in keeping with the weekend theme of connecting with former basketball players. A crowded Friday ferry trip brought me to the famous island―once a center for the whaling industry, but now a tourist destination for the bourgeoisie. Billy met me at the dock, along with Matt and Storm, who’d arrived earlier. These hoop “cronies” were inconveniently (for Billy) arriving at six different times, so Billy had to remain on call in downtown Nantucket village, where he gave subsequent arrivals tours of his favorite social establishments, where he seemed to know

Nantucket golfers: Mike, Darryll (incognito), Billy, Matt, Richie, Jeff, Neil, and Storm. every waitress and bartender―confirming the notion that he was indeed a successful Nantucket businessman. Eventually we were joined by Darryll, Neil, Richie, and Jeff. Billy then brought us to a wonderful establishment with a friendly, non-pretentious clientele, as well as good food, great libations, and multiple large flat screen televisions to watch the baseball playoffs. One might assume that we all were Red Sox fans, but Jeff was a Yankee fan, Darryl an Orioles fan, and Matt was a free agent. But we all agreed that we wanted the Cubs to beat the Cardinals! GOLF ADVENTURES Saturday was golf day. In preparation I’d moved my important golf clubs from my big golf bag to my smaller “travel” golf bag. But in so-doing, I‘d forgotten my pitching wedge. Rats! We adopted a “scramble” format―foursome against foursome. I was with Jeff, Neil, and Richie. I didn’t contribute much to our team effort, perhaps because I was tired from sleeping on a couch at Billy’s house. Also, I didn’t have my wedge. Finally, in desperation I borrowed Jeff’s wedge and hit an almost perfect approach shot. “How much do you want for the wedge?” I asked

Jeff. “Not for sale,” he replied. The golf carts at Nantucket’s pricey Miacomet Golf Course were nothing like I was used to in New Hampshire. They were computerized and had screens that described each hole in detail, how far it was to the pin, regardless of where you were on the course. Unbelievable! They also warned against driving carts in the rough. In New Hampshire, I always drive my cart into the rough, because that’s where most of my balls go. But on Nantucket, if you strayed from the approved golf cart areas, your golf cart would automatically stop. It’s true. I drove my cart into the rough to find my ball and the cart stopped. The computer screen told me I could only go in reverse until I returned to approved golf cart territory. Talk about Big Brother/ GPS watching you! We all eventually gave in to the Golf Cart Gods. We had no choice. MAGIC WEDGE Miacomet had no water hazards, unlike my home course in Loudon, but there was sand everywhere. I borrowed Jeff’s wedge to get out of a trap and put the ball six feet from the pin. Then on the next hole, a short par 3, See moffett on 19

It’s Snow Time by Steve White Contributing Writer

There‌I said it. Veteran backyard birders do not need a calendar to know the time of year. We do not need to watch the media outlets to understand that a season of change is rapidly approaching. Back to school ads have been around for weeks, much to the chagrin of children everywhere. If you are spending your relaxing time watching your birds in the trees and bushes, you should be noticing all the signs that wild birds are showing you. Are the mourning doves gathering in the early daylight hours in larger numbers? Have starlings, grackles or blackbirds, once again, taken over your bird feeders? Are the woodpeckers showing up in greater numbers along with the nuthatches, titmice and chickadees? Are the goldfinches back with a vengeance and do they appear to be duller in color than ever before? How about those blue jays? Have you seen so many blue jays gathering in large flocks since springtime? Each of these wild bird species are exhibiting very visible signs that change is coming. During the hot months, if you start to see these flocks increasing in numbers, then the end of summer is approaching and autumn is just around the corner. During the nesting seasons, wild birds breakoff from the large spring flocks to establish predetermined breeding territories. The late spring/early

summer time frames are dedicated to nest building, egg laying and fledgling stages. Once these important events are completed, the birds will start to gather again, species specific, for the fall season. It is during the upcoming cool season that birds begin to “beef upâ€?. Increasing each species fat intake is a daily task. More eyes protect the flocks from predators above and below as they gorge on wild seeds. When the winter season arrives, birds will have already established their second annual territory. Birds establish two very distinct territories each year. Spring territories provide nesting birds the comfort zone necessary to protect the young from competing wild bird species. Fall territories are needed to affix areas for food and shelter. Watch and listen to your backyard birds‌they are

telling you something very important. Change is coming. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. Welcome to fall colors and a never-ending supply of new beers for this season. It seems New Hampshire comes alive in the fall, partly due to a change in climate and leaf color, and partly for the reason to drink different style beers. Octoberfest is upon us and so is pumpkin beer. But we are here to talk about bolder beers and we now focus upon stout... 603 Brewery, located in Londonderry, NH, offers year-round beers as well as seasonal beers matched to their climate change. Less than 36 months old, 603 has made a momentous mark in the NH craft beer a 30 AND 60 barrel brew scene. do you drive your car, and do you park it right away in your garage so the heat from the car and engine help heat the garage space? Here’s the bottom line. If you don’t supply heat or

cooling into your garage, the garage space temperature will eventually start to be quite close to whatever the outdoor air temperature is no matter how well insulated the garage walls, ceiling and garage door are.

All that said, the insulation kit you saw at the home center or hardware store could be a great value. It all depends on how well the rest of your garage is insulated. If your garage door is the weak link in your insulation with re-

spect to the walls and ceiling, and the kit allows the door to now have as much insulation as the rest of the space, then you’re headed in the right direction. However, if the insulation gives the door an R-factor much higher than the walls and ceiling, then the heat in the garage will transfer faster out of the walls and ceiling and you’ll still have a cold garage in the winter. I know all this is confusing, but think of your garage like your body. If you have a warm coat and pants on but no hat, then you’ll probably lose lots of heat out of your head and feel colder faster. If you decide to purchase the kit, you need to make sure the insulation stays on the door. You’re right to be concerned that when your garage door is in the open position and your car is in the garage, the new insulation could detach and tumble onto your car. It’s up to you to determine how well the new insulation bonds and is connected to the existing insulation. If the new kit relies on some sort of adhesive, be sure your new and old insulation are dust free before applying the adhesive. Perhaps do a test. Just glue on one piece of insulation, allow the adhesive to dry and cure and then raise the garage door to see if the insulation stays put. rewarding with each sip and keeps your attention throughout the entire 22 oz bottle. Pouring this gem into a pint glass, you’ll first notice its depth of color... not quite black, but darn close. The khaki head stays through most of your pint with generous lacing. Many notes of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malts embrace your senses with creamy goodness at your lips. The taste of this beer will tell you that 603 has it’s gameon here. It is their darkest offering but their brightest achievement. Again, it will have your full attention! Among any of NH’s great stouts, this has to be one of my all-time favorites and, rated at 8% ABV, will stay there. There is mystique to this beer that traps and holds you long after you have completed the contents. BeerAdvocate.com folks have all unofficially rated this one over 4.0 out of 5.0 which points out that you should try this before it leaves for the season! You can find this and many more at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia and other fine craft beer providers. Tis the season to stout! Who was this father/son dynamic duo? (Answer follows)

I used Jeff’s magic wedge for a tee-shot and hit my shot onto the green, for an eight foot birdie putt. “How much do you want for the wedge?” I asked Jeff. “Not for sale,” he replied. COWBOYS AND PATRIOTS On Sunday, Billy took us to a downtown sports bar to watch NFL football―four games simultaneously on big flat screens. As he walked into the establishment, a Miller Lite was immediately placed into his hand―Billy being a well-known, successful Nantucket businessman. New England was playing at Dallas, and the Patriots were obviously the local favorite. But of course, our group had a Cowboys fan. As with Yankee fans, there’s always one in every crowd. The Wright Museum is closing the season with a special exhibit displaying the seldom-seen sketches by self-taught artist Charles Miller. These works provide an unfiltered look at the everyday life of G.I.s who fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Because Miller also wrote descriptions of what he portrayed on most of his sketches, his works are historical documents as well as art. The eighty-three sketches in the exhibit represent a fraction of the 700 works Miller created during his time in the Pacific.

attached with information and arrows pointing in all directions. I marveled that the Hell Gate Cabins were 9 miles straight ahead. The Diamond Peaks Trail is only 1.1 miles to its end at the ledges near its East Peak’s high point. The trail has bog bridges over a short wet area before it begins to climb steeply. In a short while we took an unsigned but blazed side path to the top of Alice Ledge. (I did not discover why or who the ledges are named for but they are marked on the USGS maps as such too). Just a third of a mile up the trail the crag offered for our

a little effort a fine view down the valley. Half ways up outlooks open over the side of Linda Ledge. We continued on and we noted that a recent re-route of the trail went around a steep area taking out a section of old trail that required scrambling up ledge. More outlooks open and we stopped to admire the view of the ledge and that we would be hiking along its ridge. Great care must be taken near the ledges because they are high steep ledges. We enjoyed the wide vista that had remarkably little to no sign of man. We could see the waters of the Magalloway River too and

look down on Diamond Peaks’ third pointy peak that has no trail to its summit. On our way back down we stomped around in the woods to find what we believed to be the actually high point. Bryan reminded me that Diamond Peaks is on the NH fire tower list too. The walk back out seemed shorter because it was following the river downstream. A trip to the far Northern New Hampshire is well worth the drive. Have Fun.

paign ads and only those with the most money could compete. What distinguishes you from the other candidates? We have a terrific field of candidates who are good people. I think primary voters are tired of campaign conservatives. I think they are looking for a consistent conservative, someone who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. For example, just about every republican candidate says they want to stand up and fight Washington. That’s great. I think the natural next question is: “When have you actually stood up and fought Washington?” At the last

debate just about every republican candidate talked about how they wanted to stop funding for Planned Parenthood and stop the Iranian Nuclear deal. Yet, when the fight was being waged in the US Capitol, not one of them was there. I was leading the fight. Not a one of them stood and led. If you haven’t stood up to Washington in the past there’s no reason to think you are suddenly going to start when you arrive at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

truth is that a lot of politicians, including a lot of Republicans, are largely resigned to Obamacare being a permanent feature of our economy. The only way to change that is that I plan to make the 2016 election and referendum on repealing Obamacare. To come out in November 2016 with a mandate from the voters to repeal Obamacare and also to adopt a simple flat tax and abolish the IRS. Those are the two major legislative initiatives I am campaigning on. I think health care reform should follow the principles of expanding competition, empowering patients and consumers to make health decisions and consultations with their doctors and disempowering government from getting between us and our doctors. We should allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines which is currently illegal. If you want more people to be able to afford health insurance what you want is more choices and lower costs. Obamacare has fewer choices and higher costs. This would enable people to purchase low cost catastrophic health care insurance which would broaden access dramatically. We should expand Health Savings accounts and we also need to delink health insurance from employment. Not many know the history of how it came to pass we get our health insurance from our jobs. It arose coming out of WWII where you had wage and price controls in effect and

employers couldn’t attract new employees with higher wages so they began offering perks and offering health insurance and the tax laws incentivized that. The problem is we don’t live in the 1950s anymore. We don’t live in an economy where people tend to go to work for one company for forty years and then retire and get a gold watch. We are a mobile and transitory society where people move and if you lose your job you don’t lose your car insurance and house insurance. You don’t lose your life insurance so there’s no reason you should lose your health insurance and it’s the worst one to lose because that creates much of the problem with preexisting conditions. They lose their insurance when they switch jobs and can’t get a new one because of an injury or illness. Everyone of these reforms empowers patients and keeps the government from getting in between us and our doctors. Tax Code/Tax Reform We spend about 500 billion dollars a year on tax issues. From lawyers to accountants to paperwork in dealing with the IRS. Every bit of that is a dead weight loss, it doesn’t produce anything. That is about the budget of our entire military. You look at the IRS code, there are more words than there are in the Bible. Riddled with loopholes and exceptions and just about every one is a result of a lobbyist getting special treatment for their clients which in turn benefits incumbent politicians who extract campaign contributions for every one of those loopholes. The virtue of a flat tax is that all of the favoritism, all of the Washington politicians extracting support from the private sector, extorting really, is taken away if everyone is paying the same uniform tax, it disempowers Washington politicians. Every American should be able to fill out their taxes on a postcard and that would produce economic growth. My number one priority if elected and in the See cruz on 23

senate is economic growth because growth is foundational to everything else. Every time we pursue tax and regulatory reform like in the 1920s under Calvin Coolidge, the 1960s under JFK or the 1980s under Ronald Reagan, the result has been incredible economic growth. I think we are at a place in time where real change is possible with the tax code. Something has changed significantly in the last six and a half years. We have seen the Obama administration succeeding in what Richard Nixon tried to do, using the IRS to go after and target their political enemies. That, I believe, has changed this issue to make it a powerful, populist issue. To padlock the IRS and to removed that power from government so that we don’t have to fear getting a knock on the door from the IRS. We will take that power out of Washington. I am working with my economic team on the specifics of the Flat Tax and will come out in the coming weeks and months with a very specific plan. What do you think is the biggest threat to our country today? Looking abroad I think the single greatest threat to our national security is the threat of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. This is a nation led by a theocratic zealot who chants “Death To America and calls Israel “The Little Satan and America “The Great Satan If history teaches us anything it is that if somebody tells you they want to kill you, you should believe them. I have pledged that if elected, on the first day in office I will rip to shreds this catastrophic Iranian nuclear deal and make unequivocally clear that under no circumstances will Iran be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Domestically, I think the greatest threat is the assault on the rule of law and the Constitution. We’ve had six and a half years of a lawless president who has repeatedly, blatantly and nakedly disregarded the law, ignored the law and claimed the power to

Republican presidential candidate, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, addresses the crowd at Funspot. unilaterally change the law. If you have a president who can pick and choose which laws he follows, you no longer have a president. I would use President Obama’s own words when asked in 2012 whether he would grant executive amnesty to people here illegally he responded: “No, I don’t have that authority under the constitution. I am not an emperor. Then just months later, right before the election apparently he became an emperor because he did what he just said the constitution doesn’t give him the power to do. That is a profound threat to our liberty if the

president is not obliged to follow the law. What could congress do and did you do anything? Congress can do a great deal and should. Unfortunately, there is a feeling of fear and timidity among the Republican leadership in Washington and they have abdicated their responsibility to defend the constitution and defend

the authority of congress. In the preceding Congress I was the ranking member on the constitution committee, the senate judiciary committee. In that capacity I put out a series of reports chronicling the lawlessness of this administration detailing seventy-six lawless acts taken by President Obama and this administration disregarding the law. Detailing the twentytwo times the US Supreme

Court had unanimously rejected the Obama administration’s assertions of government power. In the entire time I have been in the senate I have been urging both democrats and republicans, to stand up and defend the rule of law. Unfortunately, Republican leadership begins every battle by surrendering at the outset. They are convinced there is no fight they can win with Obama and so they have willingly funded every bit of his lawless big government agenda. Right now in Washington there is a fundamental imbalance. President Obama and the democrats are absolutely and ferociously committed to advancing their liberal agenda. They are practically willing to cross over broken glass with a knife between their teeth. President Obama is like the Terminator, he never stops, he never gives up and he keeps going forward. The other side enters every battle with a peremptory surrender and says at the outset “we give up, we will give you whatever you want and when that is happening the outcome is not in doubt. defend the constitution. It has been a lifelong passion of mine. Going back to when I was in High School and was part of a group called the Constitutional Corroborators and spent

hundreds of hours studying the constitution and memorized a shortened version and toured the state of Texas speaking that. Serving for five and a half years as the Solicitor General of Texas, the chief

lawyer for the state in front of the US Supreme Court, where over and over again we led the nation defending conservative principles and won a series of landmark victories. When it comes to fighting for the constitution and defending principles of Federalism this has been a lifelong calling and not a new idea discovered on the presidential campaign trail. Gun Control As the Solicitor General of Texas I led a coalition of 31 states in front of the US Supreme Court defending the individual right to keep and bear arms and won a landmark decision 5-4 upholding that fundamental right. I led the fight against President Obama and Harry Reid and the democrats trying to infringe on our 2nd amendment rights. I led the fight in the Senate and we defeated every one of Obama’s unconstitutional efforts to infringe on our right to keep and bear arms. The Gunowners of America has endorsed me for having the strongest record by far of any candidate in the field defending the second amendment. How do we deal with the increasing number of people becoming dependent on government? I think the democrats plan is to make as many Americans as they can dependent on government so they will be a permanent voting sector to keep democrats in power. That’s a real danger but I don’t think we are there yet. Are there really people truly lazy who don’t want to work? Yes, but I think it is a much lower number than many of us fear. A great many people right now dependent on the government are trapped in dependency and still want to stand on their own feet and have the dignity to still want to provide for their families and kids. I try to view every issue from the perspective of my dad who fled Cuba 58 years ago. He came to America in 1957 at 18, couldn’t speak English and had 100 dollars in his underwear. He washed dishes for 50 cents an hour, worked full time, paid his way through school and went on to start a small business. I try to

think how policy issues today would have impacted my dad. If he were washing dishes today the odds are high he would have lost his job because of the Obama economy and if he hadn’t lost it he may have had it cut to under 30 hours because of Obamacare. I often think, Thank God some well meaning liberal didn’t put his arm around him and say “Let me take care of you, let me make you dependent on government and give you a government check. Let me sap your self respect and your dignity and by the way, don’t bother learning English, I respect your culture so much I will lock you out of the educated and professional classes in this country.” That would have been the most damaging thing that could have happened to my dad. So, I think the social safety net should be a trampoline and not a hammock. Income inequality had increased dramatically under Obama. The top one percent they demagogue earn a higher share of our income since 1928. The rich do great under big government. Lowest percentage of Americans working since 1977. Median income has stagnated for 20 years. The way we win this election is to run a populist campaign of working men and women who want to believe again in the promise of America and we run it against the bipartisan corruption of Washington that Hillary Clinton embodies. We can get back to the promise of America.

law being proposed would not have made the slightest difference. That too is part of the farce. A deadly farce. So is the automatic assertion that whoever engaged in a shooting rampage was a madman. Yet these supposedly crazy shooters are usually rational enough to choose some “gun-free zone for their murderous attacks. They seem more rational than gun control zealots who keep creating more “gunfree zones. Gun control zealots are almost always people who are lenient toward criminals, while they are determined to crack down on law-abiding citizens who want to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones.
