Growing Up In Rochester On Thursday, November 13, at 7pm at the Rochester Historical Society Museum on Hanson Street, David G Duchesneau will talk about his life growing up in Rochester in the late 1950s and 1960s. In his recently published book, Uniforms, Duchesneau describes his experiences wearing the uniforms of Holy Rosary Catholic School, the Graniteers Drum and Bugle Corps, and the United States Marines. Being taught by nuns, traveling throughout New England and beyond performing in parades and competitions with a drum and bugle corps, and serving two tours of duty in Vietnam by age 21 shaped his life and future. The discipline instilled in him by these organizations shaped his character. A book signing will follow his talk. After being honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps in 1970, Duchesneau returned to New Hampshire. In 1971, he joined the NH State Police. After his law enforcement career, he opened a Private Investigative/Security Agency and Consulting Firm. He is certified as an International Investigator and Fraud Consultant. He is a proud member of many organizations, including the NH Retired Law Enforcement Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, Marine Corps Association, and the Marine Corps League. As a member of Bugles Across America, he is still called upon to play Taps at the funerals of deceased veterans. All are welcome to attend. Admission is free and refreshments will follow the meeting. For more information please call 330-3099 or e-mail rochesterhistorical@metrocast.net.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Back To Normal

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Sometimes the things we think are new are really old. A certain shoe store chain recently sent out a press release, patting themselves on the back for not opening on Thanksgiving Day and not before 7am on Black Friday in order to give their employees more time to spend with their families. Now, those lucky employees can sleep in till 5am the day after their family celebration before having to get ready to trudge off to work. Personally, I don’t feel it is that noble of a gesture on the part of the company and certainly nothing to crow about. If they really wanted to give employees more time with their families they would open stores at their regular hours on Friday or, gasp, not at all. Still, they are going against the grain of what has been considered the new norm and people are talking about it. If you stop and think about it, it was the idea of opening up early on the day after Thanksgiving which started this trend in the first place, It has since evolved into stores opening up at midnight on Friday and now on Thanksgiving Day itself. Years ago, some people were outraged that stores opened up at 7am on Friday instead of 9am or, gasp, opened at all. Today, opening early

is the new norm and we are all used to it. But this shoe store has bucked the new norm and gone back to the old norm which everyone sees as a new idea. They are being praised as a trendsetter even though you are just doing things the way they were originally done. Strange. Over the past few weeks, the price of gas has dropped and people are talking about it. Many are excited that a gallon of gas is now less than three dollars. Still, it seems like it was only a few years ago that the price of gas was under two dollars and people were getting angry because it was soon going to go over that mark. The news reports then talked of how folks would have less disposable income since they would be paying more than two dollars a gallon to fill up their gas tanks. Now that the price is going back down to just under three dollars, the same newscasters are talking about how people will have more money to spend this Christmas. But if they are spending more on gas than they were a couple of years ago wouldn’t they still have less money to spend? It’s what you get used to, the new normal. As I get older I find myself wary of getting used to new things but over time I forget what it was I was trying to get used to because the thing I had to get used to I finally did get used to and it is now being replaced by something else to get used to so I am trying to get used to that. This mostly happens with technology. We are all so used to cell phones and the Internet that when they don’t work, for even a few minutes, we find it

hard to regroup. We find it hard to have to go back to old ways. Having grown up in the 1960s, I can still fall back on some of the things I got used to then in case of emergency. For example, if I forget to charge my Kindle and the battery has worn down, I still know how to open up and read a book. If my computer should crash I still know how to write a letter on a piece of paper and if a calculator isn’t handy…no sweat. To a lot of young kids today, some of these things, if they had to do them, would feel new, even uncomfortable. Some of us have gotten so used to certain things that we could never go back to the way it was before we even knew that these things might exist someday. Think about it. Would you even consider buying a new car that didn’t have cup holders? Still a lot of people can get used to new normals and forget that there were old normals. Sometimes, like in the case of the shoe store or the price of gas, people embrace the new normal even though it is really an old normal that they have forgotten about or maybe had never experienced before. Many of us go along day to day and just think that because things are the way they are that is the way they have to be. We just accept change and hope we can adapt accordingly. We are hesitant to try something new, even if it really is old. But sometimes if we try it, it turns out that the old way, when it becomes the new normal, really made the most sense after all. Will you be voting next Tuesday?

White Not Reasonable To The Editor: On Wed., Oct. 15th, I attended a “meet the candidates in Wolfeboro. I submitted a question on an issue about which all of the candidates said that they knew nothing. The moderator asked if I would like to explain the substance of the issue. After saying only a few words and seconds into my explanation, I was shouted down by the “tolerant liberals in the audience and at least one of the Democrat candidates, namely, John White, State Senate candidate. Mr. White then asked to say something and I responded by saying that he apparently had suddenly gained knowledge on the subject and that I would gladly like to be educated. His response was that he doubted that I was capable of being educated and proceeded to rant and rave about the issue which I hadn’t yet explained and about which he had admitted minutes, if not seconds, before that he hadn’t any knowledge. His outburst was totally unresponsive to the question posed and makes me believe that he is not able to control his emotions. This is a characteristic that does not allow one to make reasonable and well thought out decisions. Senator Jeb Bradley and I have differing opinions on quite a few issues but we are capable of having rational and unemotional discussions

without personally attacking each other. Senator Bradley understands that he works for the taxpayer and is willing to listen and perhaps learn something from his constituents. Mr. White on the other hand seems sure that he knows everything and certainly more than the NH taxpayer for whom he would work if he were elected. Vote for John White if you want someone who apparently is not interested in your opinion and who would attack a constituent with whom he disagrees even before understanding the issue at hand. Vote for Jeb Bradley if you want someone who will serve you. Remember, your State Senator works for you. Vince Merola Wolfeboro, NH.

For Bob Hull To The Editor: On page 4 of your October 23rd issue someone is attacking me and GOP state house candidate Bob Hull. In response I say that I’ve known Bob Hull for over 10 years in Grafton, and he’s the best choice of any candidate on the entire ballot. I’m a loyal Republican, a former state senate candidate, and the founder of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire: I urge everyone to vote for Bob Hull. He’s no run-of-themill “local politician, and that’s what makes him the

Hassan and Common Core To The Editor: Governor Hassan is running a political commercial praising herself on the issue of education. Sadly she’s misleading the public. Governor Hassan has walked lockstep behind the Obama Administration as they wage war on teachers and students. By adopting the Common Core Standards (CCSS), NH has given up local control in educaion in favor of dumbed down academic standards. If our students are to compete nationally or internationally, Common Core is NOT the plan for that. Not only does the Obama Administration seek to make the problem of over testing worse, teachers have now become the scapegoat in this bureaucratic reform. The U.S. Department of Education has denied States a waiver from No Child Left Behind if they do not target teachers by tying their evaluations to the standarized test scores. Governor Hassan’s approach to education seems to be, throw See mail boat on 30

Military Appreciation Day At Funspot All Active Military, Veterans & Families Welcome

Starr Lawton, manager of the DA Long Tavern at the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in Weirs Beach, was deeply affected by a Facebook post she read. Enough so that she decided to spearhead the organization of bringing back Military Appreciation Day. “It was a post from a storage company,” Starr recalled. “They were posting that they were sending back a check to a solider for storing his motorcycle. It got me to thinking that we hadn’t done anything for our soldiers in awhile at Funspot and it was time to again give them the recognition they deserve. Being the largest arcade in the world and a family business we are the perfect place for it.” Military Appreciation Day will be held at Funspot on Saturday, November 8th from 11am to 4pm for all active military, veterans and their families. Among the events planned are a hamburger and hot dog and salad buffet for the first five hundred attendees as well as a free raffle with two grand prizes of overnight stays at the Inns At Mills Falls, one which includes a couples mas-

sage at Cascade Spa and the other with dinner at Giuseppe’s all of who have donated the prizes. By showing a military ID or Veteran’s ID you will receive for you and your family Funspot tokens to use in any of the over 500 games as well as coupons to come back and use at their new 5,500 square foot indoor mini golf course which is nearing completion. Also on hand will be the New Hampshire National Guard with an armored personnel carrier and the Wright Museum of World War II will be bringing some of their World War II vehicles to display. Mix 94.1 will be on hand to broadcast live from the event. Belknap Subaru, a major sponsor of the events, will be offering ten dollar oil changes for active military members. Sponsors for Military Appreciation Day include Hannaford’s who donated five hundred hamburgers and rolls, SmokeShack Southern BBQ who donated hot dogs and buns for five hundred as well as doing the cooking and setting up the buffet. Fred Fuller Oil and Propane who donated the propane for the buffet barbeque. The Looney Bin

who donated plates and the Union Diner who donated knives and forks. Other sponsors for Military Appreciation Day are Lakes Region CocaCola, Lee’s Candy Kitchen, Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant, Sysco, WSCY 106.9 and Planet 100.1 FM “We are really looking forward to this event,” said Starr. “It is good to see this back at Funspot and to be able to give

back to all of those who serve and help keep us safe.”

We Need Some New Hope And Change It is hard to get through a day without a new disaster looming on the horizon. Unfortunately, it seems as though we have such a by Jane large variety Cormier of dangerous Hooksett, NH. scenarios, it is hard to choose which one is the most serious. As our government stumbles through a possible pandemic situation with Ebola, ISIS terrorism is rearing its ugly head, President Obama’s (supposed) upcoming executive order to offer some 400,000 ILLEGAL immigrants status here in the United States through executive fiat – well, let’s just say there are any number of possible cataclysmic scenarios to keep a person up at night. So many of these situations have been brought to us by a Progressive government who seeks to

write its own narrative. We don’t get the TRUTH with Progressives. We get talking points. We don’t call terrorism, TERRORISM, but ‘workplace violence’. (We cannot be ‘intolerant’, now can we? For a Progressive society, this one carries LOTS of territory.) We don’t close our borders to those who seek to break our laws and enter our country illegally. No, no. We cannot call these people ILLEGAL ALIENS, they are ‘refugees’ or ‘immigrants’. When people die from a dread disease we have no idea how to cure, and then send 3,000 of our best and finest soldiers into Africa to “battle the disease”, well, let’s just say, common sense has clearly left the building. Here is a partial list of more Hope and Change in Obama’s Amerika: •The debacle known as Obamacare. (We will say no more – except watch your premium grow!) •IRS targeting its own U.S. citizens participating in conservative and pro-Israel groups. See cormier on 26

Where Was President Obama?

President Obama says he’s “shaken” by this week’s violent attacks on three soldiers in Ottawa by an Islamic jihadist. He by Michelle Malkin immediately Syndicated Columnist phoned Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to offer support and “solidarity.” He vowed to “remain vigilant.” Too bad Obama didn’t show the same resolve after multiple attacks and plots against our troops by Muslim terrorists on our soil. And I’m not just talking about the “workplace violence” of jihadist Nidal Hasan, whose Koran-inspired Fort Hood rampage took the lives of 13 American servicemen and servicewomen and one unborn baby. An entire parade of infidelhating fanatics targeted U.S. soldiers long before Islamic State barbarians issued threats against our military personnel and their families this fall. What happened in Canada -- what ISIS wants worldwide -- has been happening here for years under Barry-come-lately’s watch. Where was President Obama when Muslim convert Muhammad Hussain was arrested in Maryland in 2010 after scheming to blow up an Army recruitment office to avenge his “Muslim brothers and sisters”? Hussain’s message: “Whoever joins the military, they will be killed.” He planned to “blow one recruiting center up ... then we hit another ... and just keep it movin’ ... Insha’ Allah. ... Insha’ Allah. ... Do it for jihad.” Next, Hussain told informants he would take on Andrews Air Force Base, blow it up and then take over the homes of military personnel.

Where was President Obama when Ethiopian-born Muslim Marine reservist Jonathan Melaku -- shouting “Allahu Akbar” -- fired shots at the Marine Corps Museum in D.C., the Pentagon, a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly, Va., and a Coast Guard recruiting station in Woodbridge, Va., during a months-long jihad campaign in 2010-2011? Where was President Obama when Muslim Pvt. Naser Jason Abdo, who went AWOL from Fort Campbell, Ky., was arrested in 2011 with explosives, a gun and jihadi propaganda? Abdo, who shouted, “Nidal Hasan Fort Hood 2009!” after his arrest, planned to attack soldiers at a restaurant near the base. Where was President Obama when a gang of Islamic thugs in Newburgh, N.Y., was arrested plotting to “bring death to Jews” at nearby synagogues and “commit jihad” by shooting planes at the local Air National Guard base with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles? Where was President Obama in June 2011 when Seattle jihadists Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, also known as Joseph Anthony Davis of Seattle, and Walli Mujahidh, also known as Frederick Domingue Jr., were busted after plotting to attack the Military Entrance Processing Station in Seattle in a shooting and grenade spree. “Imagine how many young Muslims, if we’re successful, will try to hit these kinds of centers,” Abdul-Latif (an admirer of Fort Hood killer Nidal Hasan) exulted. “Imagine how fearful America will be, and they’ll know they can’t push the Muslims around.” His bloodthirsty agenda: “Hopefully there will be more soldiers who come out of the woodwork to serve Allah.” Where was President Obama See malkin on 16

It wasn’t long ago that Obama and the Democrats promised you “Hope and Change” if you would vote for them by Tom Thomson and now six Orford, NH. years later their promise of “Hope and Change” has turned into “Doom and Gloom” along with scandal after scandal. Don’t be fooled again on Election Day, November 4th 2014. In a recent U.S. Senate hearing, it was said that “Facts are Stubborn”; so let’s look at the latest facts, scandals and breaking news. Ebola outbreak: President Obama told us not to worry after Thomas Duncan who traveled from Liberia, and died in a Texas hospital “my Administration and the CDC

have everything under control,” yet two nurses who cared for Mr. Duncan, who had followed the protection and precautions, now have Ebola and the President and the Democrats say not to worry again. Really! In a recent poll, 67% of Americans want the President to temporarily suspend travel (a travel ban) from West Africa to the United States in order to protect Americans from Ebola. The President says he will not and many Democrats agree with President Obama! Let’s look back over the past six years of Obama and the Democrats promise of “Hope and Change” or what many call “Scandals:” 1.”Fast and Furious,” in which US Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered. 2. IRS targets Democratic opponents, the Tea Party and Conservative Republicans. 3. Benghazi Scandal, where US Ambassador and three other

has been given a reality jolt. Twice within three days, “lone wolf” terrorists have killed Canadiby John J. Metzler an soldiers on Syndicated Columnist Canadian soil; one outside Montreal and another at the symbolic National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Ottawa incident also saw the lone gunmen rush into the Houses of Parliament, wildly firing shots in an attempt kill legislators. Fortunately he failed. The assailant, a recent convert to radical Islam, was shot and killed by the Parliament’s Ceremonial Sergeant at Arms, Kevin Vickers, a veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (RCMP). The Toronto Star stated editorially, “The heart of Canada’s democracy has been invaded and violated.” “This week’s events are a grim reminder that Canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world,” warned Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a somber address to the nation.

Stephen Harper vowed, “We will not be intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated.” So once again Canadians are tragically reminded that, yes, it can happen here. Even in such a seemly safe place as Ottawa, the staid Canadian capital city. Though Canada has seen a number of terrorist plots thwarted in recent years by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), only recently did the government ramp up its terror threat level. One pundit wrote in Toronto’s National Post, “Canadians simply do not take security seriously. It’s not on our radar.” Something was brewing. Given Canada’s long running participation in the NATO mission against Taliban terrorists in Afghanistan and especially since the parliament voted to send Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 fighter jets and support units to help fight the Islamic State in Iraq, there’s been an almost pregnant pause. When would something happen? Two days earlier another Canadian-born Muslim convert used his car to run down and kill a solider and injure another near Montreal. Back in July two more local converts to Islam were arrested See Metzler on 25

Americans were murdered. 4. James Foley from NH was beheaded by ISIS. 5. Secret Service’s recent security breaches and Columbian prostitution scandal. 6. ISIS disaster in Syria and Iraq. 7. VA Hospital Scandals. 8. ObamaCare disastrous roll out, loss of your Doctor & 10 New Hampshire Hospitals and much higher costs coming soon. If the above wasn’t enough to worry about, our US National Se-

curity is in total freefall under the Obama Administration and the Democrats. Our allies are worried if the US will protect their backs, and our enemies are taking advantage of the total lack of US leadership under Obama. NH voters should be extremely concerned with our US Senator Shaheen and both US Congresswomen Carol Shea Porter and Annie Kuster – all Democrats – who are in lock step with President Obama; all voting and supporting See thomson on 25

Predatory Journalism The New York Times is again on the warpath against what it calls “predatory lending.” Just what is predatory lending? It is by Thomas Sowell lending that Syndicated Columnist charges a higher interest rate than people like those at the New York Times approve of. According to such thinking -- or lack of thinking -- the answer is to have the government set an interest rate ceiling at a level that will be acceptable to third parties like the New York Times. People who believe in government-set price controls -- whether on interest rates charged for loans, rents charged for housing or wages paid under minimum wage laws -- seem to think that this is the end of the story. Yet there is a vast literature on the economic repercussions of price controls. Whole books have been written just on the repercussions of rent control laws in countries around the world. These repercussions include the housing shortages that almost invariably follow, the deterioration of existing housing and the shift of economic resources -- both construction materials and construction labor -- from building ordinary housing for the general public to building luxury housing that only the affluent and the rich can afford, because that kind of housing is usually

exempted from rent control. There is at least an equally vast literature on the repercussions of minimum wage laws. Unemployment rates over 20 percent for younger, less skilled and less experienced workers have been common, even in normal times -- with much higher unemployment rates than that during recessions. Against this background of negative repercussions from various forms of price control, in countries around the world, why would anybody imagine that price controls on interest rates would not have repercussions that need to be considered? Yet there is remarkably little concern on the political left as to the actual consequences of the laws and policies they advocate. Once they have taken a stance on the side of the angels against the forces of evil, that is the end of the story, as far as they are concerned. Low-income people often get short-term loans when they run out of money to meet some exigency of the moment. The interest rates charged on such unsecured loans to people with low credit scores are usually higher than on loans to people whose higher incomes and better credit histories make them less of a risk. Crusaders against such loans often make the interest rate charged seem even higher by quoting these interest rates in annual terms, even when the loan is actually repayable in a matter of weeks. The content of the food we put in our bodies is massively overlooked by our society. This needs to change! Everything you consume affects the way your body functions; knowing how to properly read labels is a very important tool in day to day food consumption. This article will give you a clear understanding of how and what everything means in the nutritional facts section of a product label. Let’s start from the top and work our way down‌ Directly beneath the “Nutrition Factsâ€? is the serving size. All of the content in the nutrition information is based upon this very important piece. If you are ignoring the serving size, the remainder of the label will be completely useless! Serving size can be portrayed in a number of ways. Typically you will see it in grams, ounces, pieces or cups. Majority of the time there is more than one unit of measure. For example, “Serving Size: 4 Pieces (100g)â€?. With this example, we know that the nutritional facts are based on a serving size of 4 pieces (or 100 grams) of that food. This means that if you were to eat 2 pieces (or 50g), you can cut all of the nutritional information in half. If, however, you ate 8 pieces (200g), then you should double all of the nutrition facts. Serving sizes given in a unit of measurement are difficult to tell by eye. Weighing your portions on a

food scale is ideally the best way to distinguish grams and ounces. Of course this isn’t the ideal thing to do while you’re eating out, but for at home it is a fantastic way to make sure you’re not doing any guessing. When you are out to eat it is safe to estimate serving size based upon the servings per container. Serving per container conveys how many of the above serving sizes are found in the entire container that your food came in. If a serving size is 1 cup, and it says, “Servings per Container: 4, that means there are 4 cups in that container. Next on the label are the calories. This represents the total calories in exactly 1 serving of the food/ drink. If you are trying to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain your weight, calories are easily the most important nutritional fact on the entire label. You can consider calories as units of energy. Ideally when you consume more calories than your body is requiring in energy than you gain weight and when consuming less calories than required you lose

weight. This analogy applies aside from the factors of stress, chemical balance and mental health. Also keep in mind the serving size. If you are eating/drinking exactly 1 serving, then the calorie information given is amount of calories consumed. A bit of math is required to calculate when you consume half of or more of the serving size. Calorie content listed includes calories from fat. So you know the calories in one serving. So why is the calorie from fat shown on food labels? Fat content is important to know, as high levels of fat negatively affect your overall health. However, this does not mean that cutting out fat is a healthy solution. A little less than one third of your total calories for the day come from fat. There are nine calories per gram of fat so you could calculate the Calories from Fat out for yourself, but the “calories from fat section does the math for you The next category is Total Fat. All the different fats are separated into their own categories; therefore you do not need to add them all together. Remember that one gram of fat contains nine calories. Directly below Total Fat there is generally a list of 1-4 specific types of fats contained in a serving. The first is Saturated Fat- this happens to be a bad fat. This shouldn’t be avoided completely but should absolutely be moderated. One third of your total fat intake daily is typical. Trans Fat is a category that should be completely See latham on 34

The kids are back in school and the sports practices and games are in full swing. Many of us, parents and kids alike are on the run. Meals are eaten in parking lots, on bleachers, in the car and sometimes consist of peanut butter and jelly. Mom works, Dad works and no one has time to eat a healthy meal, let alone make one. There are some clever on the run options that you could consider for these busy times. You could Google these and make an effort to shop and prepare foods ahead on the weekend to make the weekdays less hectic. Your weekends are full as well you say? So often chiropractic is associated with back pain. If you ask the average person what a chiropractor is, you’ll probably hear something along these lines: “ back doctor”, “back pain”, etc. It’s easy to understand this misconception. Chiropractic IS really good at dealing with back pain. Also, many chiropractors do focus on pain treatment. I’ve said this many times and written it here before, as well: this is really missing the potential of chiropractic as part of your healthcare team. Chiropractic’s true goal is much deeper than pain relief; the goal is function. Function of the spine, yes, but also of the brain and nervous system. That may sound strange if you’ve only thought of your chiroprac-

tor as your back doctor. Consider some of the these ideas though: at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic’s International Research and Philosophy Symposium study was presented that demonstrated that a chiropractic adjustment had a positive effect on the central nervous system, specifically the four primary frequencies of brain function (brainwaves) (www.yourspine.com/Chiropractic/Chiropractic%20 Improves%20Brain%20 Function.aspx). Meaning: getting adjusted by a chiropractor may have a good effect on how your brain works, simply put. Another example was published in 2010. Researchers found that “spinal manipulation of dysfunctional joints may modify transmission of neuronal circuits not only at a spinal level but a cortical level and possibly deeper brain structures such as the basal ganglia” (J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 2010 MarApr;33(3):178-188). Again, in English, the study authors are stating that they found that chiropractic adjustments effected your brain and it’s function. The question always comes back to: well what do we do with this information? I’m glad you asked. The point is this: if our brain and nervous system are the control center for everything in our body, then it has to be of the highest priority to keep this system

well. If your nervous system is functioning poorly, in my opinion, you can argue that attempting any other health improvements is a futile task. Putting healthy food, vitamins, exercise, or even medicine into a body that has a nervous system that can’t make the most of these things, seems backwards. In my mind, restore function to this system and then you get the most out of your healthy choices. It’s like putting premium fuel in a car that has a nonfunctional engine. It’s not going to do much. I know everyone feels like they want to be healthy and so many have the best of intentions. My hope for you is that you can begin to see a new path to health. My family operates with this hierarchy: nervous system function first (chiropractic), building blocks for the nervous system next (nutrition, sleep, water), and personalization next. The last step is what you do with your healthcare team on your own. Whether that’s your PCP or massage or whatever. The idea is that you get your nervous system and your health basics in order first, then you are at a good starting point to address any other issues (if any remain) with your personal healthcare team. Basically, you’re setting yourself up for success. As always, improved health is almost always available, you just need to take it.

Reach Out and Read Program Receives Generous Donation! Moultonborough resident Gloria Briggs recently made a very generous donation to the Reach Out and Read program. The goal of this program is to encourage literacy from a very early age and to promote reading as a part of everyday life for all children. Now in its 25th year nationally, the Reach Out and Read (ROR) program has seen a revival over the past five years here in the Lakes and Three Rivers regions of New Hampshire. LRGHealthcare employees and ROR program co-directors Mary Bidgood-Wilson, FNP, CNM and Karen Davis, RN work with publishers and organizations such as the United Way to purchase books at a reduced cost. Personal donations are also appreciated to ensure the continued success of the program. Every patient, ages six months through five years, receives a brand new ageappropriate book at each Well Child visit. There are a total of seven participating practices/clinics in the area. “I am pleased to support the Reach Out and Read program, which promotes

literacy and a love of books from a very early age,â€? explains Ms. Briggs. “This gift is a tribute to the late Bob Lappin. Bob and I have supported this program over the years and have always felt that as grandparents and members of this community the health, growth, and well-being of children in particular is so important.â€? More than 2,000 ROR books are distributed to LRGHealthcare pediatric patients annually. The donation from Ms. Briggs will buy 1 ½ years’ worth of books for the Reach Out and Read program, and will undoubtedly motivate hundreds of children and parents to make reading an everyday practice. For more information or to learn how you can make a donation to this program or to LRGHealthcare, please contact the Office of Philanthropy at LRGHealthcare at 737-1042 or visit our website: www.lrgh.org.

TO SUSPEND OR NOT TO SUSPEND? Enough time has passed so that I can now acknowledge the detention I received when I was a student at Groveton High School. My offense involved driving my car at noontime shortly after getting my license on November 1, 1971. I lived right next to the school and during noon break I went home for lunch and realized I had to go to the post office. I proudly drove

meeting. The high powers subsequently decreed that I could play basketball, but I would have to do TWO extra detentions. So off we went to Alton. The problem was that the extra detentions meant I’d miss ANOTHER away scrimmage the following week. Sheesh. But we had a precedent. We did another two-for-one and I went to the scrimmage. After FIVE detentions, I’d finally paid my debt to society.

I honestly thought I was on my own time and that a prohibition against noon driving didn’t apply to me. But in those days, Principals’ Offices meted out harsh, summary justice. I was given two detentions. My detention delighted the jealous, jerk-head students who loved seeing a jock in trouble—especially as I’d miss a basketball scrimmage at Alton High School. I pleaded my case with my coach, Fred Bailey, and asked if he’d intervene with the principal. Coach Bailey naturally wanted me on the basketball court so there was an administrative summit

I thought of my detention saga after reading Deron Snyder’s Washington Times story about preferential treatment star athletes now receive. Florida State’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston is in trouble again. His history of malfeasance includes shoplifting from a supermarket, putting soda in a Burger King water cup and engaging in BB gun battles. But when he screamed vulgarities in the student union earlier this season, he was suspended for Clemson game, where FSU’s Seminoles barely squeaked out a 23-17 win. This all pales in comparison to a two-year-old sexual assault case that recently resurfaced. As Snyder put it, stealing crab legs is one thing. Raping a woman—just like hitting one—is indefensible. Winston now faces a university disciSee moffett on 26

Tuesday 11/4 Last Chance For Deciding Our Destiny Cong. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas): “Congress isn’t going to turn this country around, the people of this counby Niel Young Advocates Columnist try are going to have to get this country back on track. And that will only happen when good, lawabiding, God-fearing Americans come out and vote.” huffingtonpost.com 10/21/14: When specifically asked if Obamacare was a proud achievement Jeanne Shaheen responded, “Absolutely.” ******** I have tired of a group of Americans being slandered by a small percentage of Democrat leaders at every opportunity. So, can you meet the challenge? The challenge is for those leaders to explain to me and other Americans just exactly what is the Tea Party, when and where they organized, who was at this meeting, is there a President and others officers of this organization, who are they, do they have a national headquarters, is there a membership card, or special secret handshake? Are there minutes of the various meetings held around America that we could see to get an idea if this is like Kiwanis, Rotary, or the Elks Clubs? If the Liberals do not have the answer for me, how can they make disparaging statements toward ANY fellow American? Read in Laconia Daily Sun, Kate Miller, Chair, Belknap County Democratic Committee: “For Democrats, turning out to vote is critical from the top of the ticket down. We can’t allow a Republican majority in the Statehouse and risk leadership by Bill O’Brien with a Tea Party, Free State agenda. We have

to protect our nursing home residents from the vagaries of purely political decisions. We need an Executive Council that will work cooperatively with the governor rather than blocking her recommendations. “We live in a participatory democracy that only works when voters participate. Otherwise, extremists call the shots for everyone.” Here is an example of how leaders of the Democrat Party operate. Have you read Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals? You should, as a Liberal Democrat the rules are already being followed. BTW, doesn’t BHO “call the shots” without the use of the U.S. Constitution? Is Kate misinformed; she thinks that the Executive Council should rubber stamp the actions by the governor? Speaking of the governor, my choice is Walt Havenstein. Like our USA, NH cannot wait for leadership to happen, the time is now! And, regarding our District1 Executive Councilor, of course Joe Kenney is our choice for making the right decisions, and doing a darn good job with constituent services. Thanks Joe. It is interesting to note that Kate is so concerned with Taxed Enough Already folks and others who live by the Constitution than she is about her hero’s lack of protecting us from enemies, foreign and domestic. Obama’s dream of socialism with little pockets of differing ethnic groups becoming reality is near. ******** Dave Devoy of Sanbornton is working to occupy the third seat as the Belknap County Commissioner for Sanbornton, New Hampton, and Laconia. Dave has served our country with 30 years active and reserve military, Dave owned three businesses within our county. Dave EMPLOYS local people, and Dave PAYS

business taxes and can tell you about REGULATIONS. Another point re: character, is that each year on Veterans Day, his stores say thanks to the vets with a free car wash. I know this because Dave has me promote the event during my radio show! He is ready to go; Day One. ********* The Laconia City Council has placed some Charter Amendments on the November ballot. Vote NO on Amendments 6 and 7 referred to by me as the Incumbent Protection Amendment. If at the last minute the thought of your Councilor winning another term because that person is the only name on the ballot leads you to ask some neighbors to write you in. In the past all it took was a handful of voters to get a “write-in” on the general election, and Bingo, there is a race. If this passes a late decision will take 35 votes to get your name on the ballot. Our mayor told me during a radio visit that he thought 10 write-ins should be sufficient. It certainly would in Ward 5 Laconia where the turnout for a primary may be 50 votes! This has nothing to do with state law. It is our City Charter. VOTE NO, please. ******** How many times have we sat in during a candidate’s night, and listened to the moderator ask the lamest of questions? I would ask every candidate for a seat on the County Convention if they know that Laconia has a tax cap, and Gilford has SB 2, and will their votes reflect that they are truly doing so in their voting for budget and borrowing? Remember, your state rep has a duty to you in Concord, and the county. And yes, I am voting for Scott Brown. We cannot save our country with Jeanne Shaheen being BHO’s best buddy.

Did you know that on an average New Hampshire winter day, chickadees need to eat between 150200 sunflower seeds to satisfy their daily energy requirements? Did you know that mockingbirds are one of the few common backyard birds to defend and hold a non-breeding territory during the winter? Speaking of the cold season, did you also know that cardinals usually gather in flocks in fall and remain together throughout the winter, staying in areas where natural food sources are plentiful? There many others facts and myths about wild birds that entertain the curious backyard birder each time I provide a presentation to civic groups and organizations throughout the country. The question and answer period of my talks are always as much fun as the speech itself. In order to stay warm at night in the winter, did you know that some songbirds actually huddle together in the crock of an evergreen tree? Songbirds use many methods to maintain body heat in severe weather. Shivering their bodies and fluffing of feathers provide warm, insulating air pockets. It is a common sight to

A Handcrafted Boutique Robins do not have to migrate from our wintry weather. behold a bird standing on one leg or crouched to cover both legs with its feathers to shield them from the cold. Birds have a tendency to also tuck their bills into their shoulder feathers for protection. Wild birds will also lower their metabolism at night which reduces the body temperature, requiring less energy to keep warm. Let’s not forget those tough, exterior feathers and fluffy, down feathers found underneath them that really provide excellent protection from the elements. Did you know that robins and mockingbirds, just to name a few fruiteating birds, do not have to migrate from our wintry weather? The normal ranges of these two birds do include the Mid-New England regions. The decision to migrate is dependant on natural food supplies, such as crabapple trees, holly berry bushes, bittersweet berries, etc. The diet of an average robin consists of 20% worms; the rest is made up of berries and all varieties of fruits.

Did you know that birds’ feet will not stick to metal perches on bird feeders? There are no sweat glands on the feet of wild birds. Therefore, no moisture is provided that would freeze to metal, and their feet and legs are made up of scaly tissue with a low blood flow to minimize cold damage. This is also another way the birds keep warm during the freezing temperatures of a winter season. Birds do bathe in the winter. In fact, open water sources may be more vital to backyard bird survival rates than food. They need to drink, and they need to bathe regularly, even in winter, to keep their feathers in good condition for flight and to maintain vital insulation. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Ferdaus declared his intent to “disable their military center, “cut off the military and then “take care of the politicians. Where was President Obama after an Islamic terrorist ring in Raleigh, N.C., got busted in 2009 plotting to bomb military installations and die “as martyrs in furtherance of violent jihad? They received overseas training, conducted surveillance of the Quantico, Va., Marine base and conspired to kidnap, maim and kill American targets abroad, as well. And where was President Obama in June 2009 when Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad walked into an Arkansas Army recruiting center, murdered 24-year-old Pvt. The Little Rock jihadist had planned on killing many more “infidel forces in the name of Allah. “The U.S. has to pay for the rape, murder, bloodshed, blasphemy it has done and still doing to the Muslims and Islam, Muhammad warned. “So consider this a small retaliation the best is to come Allah willing. This is not the first attack and won’t be the last.

It took three days for the White House to issue a pathetic politically correct statement expressing “sadness over the attack, which Obama opaquely described as a “senseless act of violence (instead of the intentional, systematic act of Islamic terrorism that it was). In the same week, the Obama administration issued an immediate condemnation and statement of “outrage over the shooting death of late-term abortionist George Tiller. Where was Obama? Sabotaging our borders, restricting our gun rights, working to free Gitmo jihadists, decrying Islamophobia, demonizing conservatives, welcoming jihad sympathizers to the White House and putting politics over national security. Now “shaken over the death of a Canadian soldier killed by a jihadist, our president has barely stirred in response to the homegrown Islamic terror campaign against our men and women in uniform under his own aloof nose. DEAR TIM: I’ve got a chronic problem with water entering the 4-foot tall crawlspace under the duplex I live in. This year has been bad with all the rain we’re having. We installed a swale, but that has not helped. I know the ground water is causing the problem, but I’m at my wits’ end about how to solve it. Is there a silver-bullet solution that will keep the water out of the crawlspace? --Mike H., Maryville, Missouri DEAR MIKE: Hundreds of thousands of homeowners suffer from chronic water seepage into crawlspaces and basements. Areas that have clay-rich soil seem to be the ones that have the greatest problems. I’ve helped many people dry out their crawlspaces and basements using simple knowledge I obtained getting my geology degree back in college. It helps to understand what’s going on below the surface of the ground if you want to solve water problems in crawlspaces and basements. Think about how ponds are built and what is done to keep the water from draining away

There is standing water next to the house on the right, having flowed down the grassy area from the top of the hill. or soaking into the ground overnight. A basement or crawlspace that’s below grade is not much different from a shallow pond. It’s a hole in the ground that will naturally fill with water because the bottom of the crawlspace or basement is lower than all the edges of the hole. Ponds stay filled with water as long as it rains because the soil at the bottom and sloped sides of the pond contain lots of clay that doesn’t allow water to pass through it. That’s also why clay is used to make pottery: it does a great job

of containing liquids. As you dig into ground, the soil profile normally changes. Topsoil near the surface contains lots of organic debris and air. The deeper you dig, the denser the soil gets and there’s very little air. You’ll notice rainwater or water from a hose disappears when broadcast on dry topsoil. This water starts to fill the air voids and then, under the influence of gravity, it starts to move downslope below the surface. Most people think that the water in soil moves straight down, but

Immigrant Culture, Imported Products When Janetos market opened it was one of more than a dozen grocery stores operating in Dover. Competition was tough and to be successful, Janetos would have to be tougher. But Evangelos Janetos was also shrewd and recognized that the large Greek community in Dover would appreciate the chance to buy authentic foods from their native homeland. To accommodate them, Janetos began importing and selling groceries whose origins were in the olive groves, pastures and farms and fields of their mother country. other markets struggled or closed, Janetos Market persevered. As the market grew, it required close supervision and constant attention. At the same time, the oldest of Janetos’ children, Mary, began working in her dad’s store. She was ten. The Big Box Stores, Then And Now If science has found a gene for just about everything, there must be a special one labeled Hard Worker. Family stories abound regarding the “workaholic ethic of the elder Janetos. There are many tales of the long hours in the store- then stores- and the time spent tending his fruit trees and vegetable gardens. One favorite family story recounts how Mr. Janetos would work a fullday shift at the store, and then go home to rest for a while. On one occasion he reportedly fell asleep and forgot to pick up his daughter who worked until closing time. Even the hardest of workers become overtired, apparently. As several of Dover’s smaller, independent stores closed, the thenstate-of-the-industry “big box grocers came to Dover. First National Stores, A & P (the now-forgotten Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) and others were expected to replace the likes of Janetos Mar-

Evangelos George Janetos as a young man. ket. “How to compete? “ the family worried. Taking a page from the play book of their founder, the family focused on their ability to provide quality products, competitive prices and personal service. And meat. Then as now, Janetos Market was widely known and highly regarded for its selection of custom-cut, highest quality meat. Like the specialty Greek foods, the store had found a way to distinguish itself, this time with the best available meat around. Gone now are the First National Stores, A & P, Siegels and Sawyers. But today there are even bigger big-box grocers, and Janetos Market continues to thrive among huge competitors. Ask a family member why and the answer always comes down to quality, value and service. And hard work: that gene has been passed down from generation to generation. Four of them, in fact. Mary Janetos And George Bandouveres: Gen 2 Takes Charge Maybe it has to do with being the oldest child. Or

perhaps being the first of the second-generation storekeepers. Or maybe that hard work gene landed particularly close to her core. Whatever the reason, Mary Janetos married George Bandouveres in 1946 and in 1947 they purchased Janetos Market from her dad for $3,000.00. Mary would now bring some of her dad’s work ethic and the skills she learned as a ten-year old to bear on the family’s new/ old business. Husband George would be an integral part of the team. Gas pumps and groceries, new stock and new babies, and Janetos Market (or Janetos Superette, as some know it) became both a convenience store and nursery. Baby sitters? Day care? None of that for the Bandouveres clan. Play pens and baby toys filled the “back room that today serves as the nerve center for the store. Even as they were too young to work in the store, the children began to absorb the work ethic and good example set by their parents. Five Bandouveres children See janetos on 21

Never Too Young To Learn The Family Business Today, a third generation of the family of Evangelos Janetos runs the namesake business. Each is acutely aware of the standards set by their parents and grandparents and each is equally committed to providing quality, value and service to their customers. When they officially took

heirs. Today, as always, they are hard at work on all three goals. Along the way, the thirdgeneration owners were asked to share a little of the philosophy that shaped them and what they want people to know about themselves and Janetos Market. See janetos on 22

turkeys that over-filled available cooler space. To ensure none spoiled, excess turkeys were stored overnight in the freezer, to be ready for Thanksgiving eve delivery. Next morning, there was a near-solid ball of hundreds of pounds of frozen turkeys to deal with. There was a lot of colorful language and scrambling around that morning, he says. Alan recounts how, as a youngster, he was tasked with unloading glass bottles of soda onto newlyconstructed shelving in the back room. Dutiful and obedient, he was stunned when the shelving collapsed and gallons of multiflavored, muti-colored soda flowed out the back door of the store. He remembers his mother offering an opinion of his father’s engineering and carpentry skills as Alan swept up a whole lot of broken glass. Karen says she has become a bit philosophical. “Yes, we worked hard. All of us. But this business

has taken care of us and if we continue to take care of it, will provide for more generations of our family. It is a significant responsibility, but also a great gift. Back To The Future Hard work. Insight. Leadership. Innovation. No, those are not the hallmarks of the latest business school buzz, but are attributes handed down from Evangelos Janetos, through his daughter Mary and his grandchildren Karen, Gary and Allan to be shared with the next generation. Kevin Weston. Reid Weston. Alex Bandouveres. Kris Weston. All are being groomed, part of a fourth generation of a family whose ties to their founder and to each other are inseparable. It has been a 90-year journey for the founder of Janetos Market, but it is a journey that is far from over.

Window Designs for You

Call now Free Design Consultations 603-859-7883 www.windowdesignsforyou.com when it hits the denser clay subsoils, it typically moves parallel to the surface of the ground until it seeps out of the soil. Many call these locations springs. You can waterproof your crawlspace and/or basement forever if you capture and divert this moving underground water before it gets to your house. Once captured, you pipe the water away from the house and allow it to continue on its journey to the ocean or sea. I’ve discovered the best way to capture this undeground water is to dig a trench that’s about 6 inches wide by 2 feet deep. This trench should be about 4 to 6 feet from your foundation wall and should surround the house on at least three sides like the letter U. You can make the trench completely surround the house like a moat if you desire. If you want guaranteed results, you want the bottom of this trench to be below the level of your crawlspace or basement floor. This can be problematic for deeper basements. Nevertheless, I’ve stopped water from entering many basements with a trench drain that’s just 2 feet deep in clay-rich soils. For the system to work,

there must be a low spot on your land that’s lower than the bottom of the trench. Most lots have this kind of fall. What you think is a level lot often has quite a bit of fall to it in 50 or 100 feet of horizontal run. One leg of the trench extends from the house to this low spot on your land. Install a perforated 4-inch diameter drain pipe in the trench on top of about 2 inches of rounded gravel the size of walnuts. Once the pipe is in place, fill the entire trench with the same gravel. The gravel must not have any sand or smaller pieces of gravel in it. You want all the pieces to be about the size of a walnut. Water readily flows through gravel like this. Water in the soil wants to find the path of least resistance, and this trench is that place. When it rains and water is flowing through the soil toward your crawlspace, here’s what happens. The water pushes its way through the topsoil and comes to the gravel. It’s easier for the water to flow through the gravel than through the soil, so it goes down to the bottom of the trench and starts to flow in the gravel and into the pipe if there’s a heavy volume of water.

If you make the bottom of the trench level while the ground in your yard is sloping downhill, eventually the bottom of the trench will emerge from the ground. That’s where the water in the drain systems exits and flows further down towards the next house. Your crawlspace stays dry because the trench acts like the hole in the bottom of a kitchen sink. As long as the kitchen sink drain line is not clogged, water flows out of the sink and into the drain pipe. The sink remains dry. The gravel-filled trench drain is simply a huge drain system that is always working. It relies on gravity and it’s very effective, if you have enough fall on your land.

Obama’s agenda, up to 99% of the time. This same Obama agenda has led to a stagnant economy where people’s wages are getting killed by inflation. Today, whether it is rising energy, food or healthcare costs, people are paying more and getting less. In a recent jobs report, Democrats pointed to a drop in the unemployment rate, but failed to mention that the same report showed wages also plunged. Our families need to benefit from an expanding economy from policies that embrace growth, not more command and control government policies that drain our wallets and grow government. What’s also striking is the lack of openness with their NH constituents when it comes to holding Town Hall meetings to allow all voters to ask questions of their elected officials. Shaheen, Shea Porter and Kuster all have been AWOL in holding Town Hall meetings while Republicans are holding them all over the state. Recently, one of NH’s most respected Democrats, State Senator, Lou D’Allesandro said on WMUR channel 9 that he wished Carol Shea Porter and Annie Kuster would hold Town Hall meetings and even WMUR’s James Pindell said “why is Annie Kuster hiding from her constituents? Comments like this from Senator D’Allesandro and James Pindell should be a wakeup call to all voters. I encourage you to vote on Election Day, November 4th, as if your children’s and grandchildren’s future depends on how you vote, because it does. For me, I will vote for every Republican on the ballot and hope and pray it will begin to change the direction of this great nation. I encourage you to do the same. planning to bomb the British Columbia provincial assembly. The suspected terrorist Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, whose father was from Libya, had lived in Montreal and had a lengthy criminal past. Most recently he was living in an Ottawa homeless shelter, ranting against Canada, and preparing to go to Syria as a foreign fighter. Yet officials added there was no specific evidence to link the radicalized Zehaf-Bibeau to Islamic State. Indeed the glaring reality remains that many Canadian converts to Islam, have been slipping into these foreign war zones, especially Iraq and Syria. According to the Canadian Intelligence Security Service, over 130 people with Canadian connections are in the Mid-East. A further 80 have returned, presumably radicalized and possibly time bombs waiting for their opportunity. Earlier this year a Calgary jihadi-wanabee was killed in Syria So what has turned these people, mostly locally-born to hate their native land and more especially, are there certain radical mosques, or recruiters in Montreal’s large Middle Eastern community, or is it simply slick jihadi internet sites? “Terrorism remains the leading threat to Canada’s national security, was the recent conclusion of the Minister for Public Safety. The conservative Harper government’s firm support for American military coalition actions against the Islamic State (ISIS) has inflamed the hatred against Canada by radical jihadi groups and likely among “lone wolf wannabes. Harper stated that Canada will continue to “fight against the terrorist organizations who brutalize those in other countries with a hope of bringing their savagery to our shores. They will have no safe haven. Yet, despite the Ottawa government’s tough stance, the fact remains

that Canada has been gleefully ambivalent about the real risks faced from foreign militants; especially those who recruit jihadi foot soldiers in cities like Montreal and Toronto. The adage it can’t happen here has been painfully rebuffed by the attack on Parliament Hill. What is more troubling is that both Canada and the USA have sadly not seen the end of this cycle of violence. Yet just one day after the attack on Parliament, the legislature after tributes to the fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, was back to business as usual. Indeed that was the toughest message to the terrorists. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. plinary hearing stemming from that alleged sexual assault in December 2012—for which he was never charged. Treon Harris, a backup quarterback for FSU’s arch-rival, the University of Florida, was suspended earlier this month— immediately after a sexual assault accusation. Unlike FSU, Florida moved

quickly and decisively to suspend Treon. Of course, Harris was not a Heisman Trophy winner. Still, some wonder if Florida may have been too hasty and harsh in its treatment of Harris. What if the accusations are false? High profile athletes and celebrities are often stalked and blackmailed. Harris presumably has a legal team working on his

behalf. As for Winston, we can only wait and see what plays out and whether college’s football’s brightest star will extinguish itself. And he should be thankful that he’s at FSU and not Groveton High, where he’d certainly have been expelled! Golf Story

Innovators...

Never Imitators

You’ll just have to take my word for it. One of the great moments in golf history. And I was there. At the 18th hole of Loudon Country Club. Sizing up at 30-foot shot from the fringe of the green, while my opponent, Tom, sized up a forty-footer, from the opposite fringe. I focused like a laser beam on the shot, and took a good whack at the ball. I looked up and saw that Tom had hit his shot simultaneously. He was “away” and I should have waited. So the two balls rolled on, both vectoring in on the pin. Closer. Closer. And then .. kerplunk …ker-plunk. They both dropped! Knocking a ball in from off the green is not particularly remarkable. But for two players, tied in strokes at the 18th hole, to simultaneously hit shots in from off the green seems extraordinary. Has it ever happened in the history of golf? If it had only been videotaped … You’ll just have to take my word for it. Sports Quiz Who is the only two-time

This is what you can expect when government goes off the rails. Dr. James Milgram who sat on the Common Core Validation Committee and refused to sign off on the CCSS said, “Common Core puts them at least two years behind their peers in high-performing countries, and leaves them ill-prepared for authentic college course work.” Jason Zimba: the chief drafter of the math standards said: Common Core college readiness is a minimal definition of college readiness, is not for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics),is not for selective colleges and does not prepare students to take College calculus. If parents want something better than this for their children, I’d suggest supporting candidates like Walt Havenstein who has publicly stated his opposition to Common Core. It takes leadership to say NO to the U.S. Department of Education’s over-reach that harms our teachers, students and legacy of local control It’s

obvious Governor Hassan does not have that important quality we need in this state. Ann Marie Banfield Bedford, NH.

For Shaheen and Porter To The Editor: This year Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Carol Shea-Porter co-sponsored the “Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act” that would have allowed refinancing of outstanding student loans at lower interest rates to make it easier for young graduates to buy a home or start a family. The refinancing measures of this bill would be paid for by a small tax increase on those earning more than $1 million annually. But the bill was killed in the Senate where 60 out of 100 votes, rather than a simple majority, are often needed even to debate—let alone pass—a bill. Senator Shaheen and my Congresswoman SheaPorter understand the financial needs of their

constituents: They have worked for legislation that increased the size of federal Pell grants to lowincome college students. They have also called for an increase in minimum wage that would help workers pay for higher education. Their unwavering commitment to protect Social Security and Medicare assure us of a secure future as we age. Jeanne Shaheen and Carol Shea-Porter stand for New Hampshire values and fight for all of us. I am proud that they represent me and look forward to voting for them on November 4th. Margaret Merritt Center Sandwich, NH.

For Giunta To The Editor: Before we call any D.C. legislator hard-working, let’s ask ourselves “Have they met with the public the last 2 years?” Frank Giunta has been in Dover twice in the last week. He normally visits and calls voters when in town. When a U.S. Rep., he held Job Fairs, exactly what NH needs to connect

employers with jobseekers. He’s a fiscal conservative with NH views and values. Vote for NH on Nov. 4. Vote Frank Giunta. David K. Martin Dover, NH.

For Forrester To the Editor: I am writing to support Jeanie Forrester in her re-election to the New Hampshire Senate. I have worked with Jeanie on various “Main Street” issues in my hometown of Meredith. From my firsthand experience, Jeanie is an honest, trustworthy person who works hard to accomplish goals set before her. She is a person of integrity whom I respect with the utmost confidence. I also appreciate how she endeavors to keep constituents informed through her regular email communications and how she solicits feedback on issues that are being addressed in Concord. In these ways, I feel informed, in touch and participating in decisions being made on

Rago and Kenney To The Editor: I have never actively supported one candidate over another, but now feel compelled to write in support of Kathy Rago and Joe Kenney. There are so many important issues at stake; foremost among them for Catholics are the assaults on free speech and religious freedoms, and the ongoing attacks on the sanctity of human life. I feel dutybound to stand up and support candidates who have shown honest and effective leadership and who have a strong moral compass. In recent filings at the NH Secretary of State, Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund has expended $74,763 in support of and in opposition to candidates in several elections in the State of NH. unconscionably taking advantage of vulnerable people. But similar economic principles apply to more upscale short-term lending to well-educated people who have valuable possessions to use as collateral. A small-time businessman who suddenly finds that he does not have

enough cash on hand, or readily available from a bank, to pay his employees this week, knows that if he doesn’t pay them this week he may not have any employees next week -and can face lawsuits the week after that. There is an upscale lending market available to such people, where

he can use his expensive personal possessions as collateral to get the money he needs immediately. He can borrow more money than the poor can borrow, and at not as high an interest rate. But his interest rate can still be 200 percent if figured on an annual basis -- even though he may be able

Editorial demagoguery against “predatory” lending might well be called predatory journalism -taking advantage of other people’s ignorance of economics to score ideological points, and promote still more expansion of government powers that limit the options of poor people especially, who have few options already. avoided as they are artificially created and not found in nature. Your body can not process these fats and ends up clogging arteries causing major health problems. An interesting fact about food labeling with Trans Fat is the FDA has a rule stating is one serving contains less than 0.5 grams, food companies are allowed to put “Trans Fat: 0 in their nutrition facts, which means there could be 0.4999 grams of it hiding in your food! There is a way to spot the Trans Fats. If you see the words: hydrogenated or shortening stay clear! These are the hidden culprit. Polyunsaturated fat and Monounsaturated fat are the good guys in the fats group, which prevent health issues. Some examples of foods that contain significant amounts of these two “good fats are fish (and fish oil supplements), nuts and seeds, and olive oil. Cholesterol is next on the label, which is a waxy, fat based substance. Cholesterol is essential in the construction of your cell walls and in manufacturing many of your body’s hormones, bile acids and vitamin D. You do not want your intake of cholesterol in food to be high as the

body can produce its own from fats. While your body actually needs some sodium to function properly, a diet too high in sodium can lead to body malfunction. So, add sodium to your growing list of nutrients that you’d like to see very little of in your foods. Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Carbs contain four calories per gram. There are basically two types of carbs, simple (bad) and complex (good). The first way is by knowing the types of foods that fit into these two categories. For example, some simple (bad) carbs include white bread, white rice, chips, cookies, candy, soda, and pretty much every type of junk food. Some complex (good) carbs include oatmeal, beans, whole wheat bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and most other fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The second way of knowing if your food is a simple carb or a complex carb is by reading the food labels. Listed directly below total carbohydrate are two other nutrition facts, dietary fiber and sugars. If a food has a good amount of fiber, it’s most likely higher in complex carbs. If it has a good amount of sugar, it’s filled with simple carbs. Dietary fiber is a nutrient that you actually want

to be high. Fiber is one of the things that makes a complex carb so good in the first place, as fiber slows the digestion of carbs by our body, which in turn improves its effect on our blood insulin levels. Sugar is up next and is one you want to see very little of. Simple sugars are the definition of simple carbohydrates. This means very quick digestion and a bad effect on our blood insulin levels. This is the culprit of poor health and obesity. The last nutrient on a label is protein, which contain four calories per gram. Protein plays an important role in muscle, cell, organ, and gland function, which makes this a good nutrient to see. So there you have it, a nutritional label explained! Knowing what you’re putting in your body and how to moderate your choices will in turn create a more balanced, happy and healthy person! As a nutritionist I stand by the true statement, “you are what you eat. There is no magic out there to replace this in seeking health.
