The Wright Museum of World War II in Wolfeboro, NH is known as a place where visitors can experience the past, but sometimes it’s the visitors’ memories that truly bring the museum to life. On October 24th, the mu-

“Rock The Kasbah” Actor Fahim Fazli Coming To N.H. For Book Signing With Mike Moffett Afghan-American Hollywood actor Fahim Fazli has appeared in dozens of movies, from Argo to American Sniper to Ironman. But his role in the highly-anticipated Rock The Kasbah is his favorite. “Having been typecast as a bad guy in so many movies and television shows, it’s nice to finally play a sympathetic character,” said Fazli, who plays Tariq Khan in Kasbah. “My character is Fahim Fazli on the set of the father of the girl Salima, an aspiring Afghan singer Rock The Kasbah with Bill who is discovered by an Murray. American promoter, played by Bill Murray.” While Salima’s role was inspired by a real-life Afghan character chasing a dream, Fazli is very much a real-life Afghan character who not only chased, but realized a dream to become a successful Hollywood actor. And Fahim’s real-life journey is even more improbable than that of Salima’s. Born in Kabul, Fazli opposed the Communists who took over his country in 1978. At age 17 he made a perilous escape across the Hindu Kush mountains to Pakistan. From 1983-85 he waited in line as a refugee in Islamabad, until he was finally approved to come to America. ArMike Moffett (L) with Fahim Fazli during riving in New ity an interview on their book at a TV station Ywoi trhk l C ittle in Phoenix. more than the shirt on his back, he learned English, studied American history, became a citizen, and made his way to California, where he worked at numerous jobs while pursuing his acting dream in Hollywood. Eventually he earned a coveted Screen Actors Guild card, which opened the door to numerous speaking roles. Proud of his American citizenship, Fazli later left Hollywood when he volunteered to put on a uniform and return to his native Afghanistan as an interpreter with the United State Marines. Serving with an infantry battalion in volatile Helmand Province, the Taliban put a price on his head. It was in Afghanistan that Fazli met a Granite Stater, LtCol Michael Moffett of Concord, who was on special assignment with the Marines. “When I met Fahim, my first thought was ‘What is a Hollywood actor doing in this God-forsaken place?’” recalled Moffett, who is a professor at NHTI-Concord, and a Weirs Times sports columnist. “But he is a true patriot. Everyone over there loved him—except the Taliban!” Fazli and Moffett collaborated with Warriors Publishing Group on a successful book entitled Fahim Speaks: A WarriorActor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back. The book won critical acclaim and the Gold Medal for Top Biography from the Military Writers Society of America. It is the basis for a movie project proposal.

The weatherman had promised a nice day but it wasn’t yet. Charlie and I decided to drive past the Sugarloaf Trailhead and see what was up the road. We drove past a sign that read something like No Dam Camp and soon we were passing many small camps surrounding the edge of a bog. Later when we returned home I learned that there are 90 something camps that once surrounded a 70 acre lake but the dam blew out and was never rebuilt. All the camps leases will expire on June 30, 2039. The temperature hovered around freezing when we hit the trail. The Sugarloaf Trail went around a small camp and headed up. We crossed a well

Capitalism To the Editor: One of the negative results of the wealth created by capitalism is that ignorant, lazy, and/or jealous people have time to complain about capitalism. Typically they do this from comfortable homes filled with indoor plumbing, labor-saving and entertaining appliances; eat good food; drive their car(s) on public roads; receive public education; and keep in touch with friends, family, and information via cell phones; all provided by capitalism or the money it generated. The best thing about capitalism is that every dollar of wealth created and every dollar transferred because a person voluntarily exchanged his/ her money for a product or service that he or she wanted more than the money. The simple formula for becoming wealthy under capitalism is to provide products and/or services that people want at prices that satisfy both you and the buyer. If you do this and help billions of people like Bill Gates did/does, then you too can be super rich. Most Americans can do well by only providing value to a few people, their employers; but if you want to earn more money, provide more value to more people. Capitalism allows anyone to become rich by following the example of most rich people, spend decades providing value to customers. There is no force in capi-

Our Story

talism, every transaction is voluntary. (Only government can force people to do things, e.g., pay taxes, be forced into the military (fortunately in the past), or being forced to buy something such as health insurance (Obamacare). Customers voluntarily buy or not based on the product’s price and value. If a price is too high, too few people will buy and the provider will lower the price, change, or withdraw the product (maybe losing peoples’ invested money). If the price is right for the buyer and seller and indicates significant demand, then competitors are likely to offer alternatives, improvements, and lower prices. Nevertheless, some people feel entitled to products they want even if they aren’t willing or able to pay the price. Although they are no worse off than if the product didn’t exist, they complain about capitalism. (Unfortunately some politicians, for their own benefit, encourage, and sometimes reward, this behavior.) One area where some people feel entitled to products they don’t want to pay for is pharmaceuticals (drugs). (Many companies help poor people obtain costly drugs (paid for by higher prices to others).) But, companies need to recover their costs and earn the profit, usually many years in the future, which is the incentive for risking their money on the average $2 billion investment, years of effort needed to

bring each new drug to market, cover the cost of many failed experiments, cover production and marketing costs, and accept the risk of lawsuits from people who claim to be harmed by the drug, etc. Without the potential for profit, few of these businesses and the drugs they create would exist. (I wish drug companies made larger profits because this would entice more investment and more companies to develop more and better drugs to extend and improve the quality of the lives of more people, maybe your life, maybe mine.) Recently an enormous price increase was announced for the drug Duraprim. Although the customers or potential customers were no worse off than if the drug didn’t exist, there was a public outcry. But, capitalism works (although not always so quickly). Another company, Imprimis Pharmaceuticals saw an opportunity and is offering an alternative drug even cheaper than Duraprim originally was. Now the Duraprim product owner sees the possible loss of all sales/ income/investment and is reconsidering its price increase. Capitalism rewards and capitalism punishes. Capitalism is often accused of causing pollution, but, more accurately, pollution is a by-product of modern living. Wealth enables cleaning up and See mail boat on 26

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Cashing In

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, which would be understandable considering the logistics involved, you most likely realize that this is primary campaign season here in New Hampshire. It is the season when aspiring presidential candidates descend upon our towns and cities to bother us while we are trying to eat a quiet breakfast at a local diner, among other things. New Hampshire is very important to them until February 10th which is when they will get out of town never to be seen again until one of them, the nominee, comes back to bother us during breakfast again next summer. The First In The Nation primary is a big deal here in the Granite State. Candidates will do anything and go anywhere in New Hampshire if it means votes. They will even try to influence people who live under rocks, even though their biggest concern is where to put the couch and getting the cable hooked up, not who is running for president. It is also a big economic boon for some businesses, when the primary season is in full swing. Hotels and restaurants do well as do meeting places that the candidates rent out to hold town hall style meetings where they speak to people who are holding big signs with their names on them. Local television and ra-

dio stations also benefit greatly from the campaign season by selling ad time to the candidates. (It is confusing to tell the political ads from the ones for the newest drug, since both are always on and both promise a better tomorrow, but you can distinguish between the two by noting that the political ad doesn’t tell you about the possible side effects. You usually find out about them when it is way too late.) Still, there are many opportunities being missed by other folks in the state to benefit from this season that is guaranteed to be profitable no matter what the weather. There is still time to cash in for some of you, but you need to strike while the iron is hot, or at least on the delicate fabric setting, especially with those candidates who are quickly running out of funds but whose ego will not let them drop out of the race even though they have about as much chance of being the nominee as of the Patriots trading Tom Brady for a sixth round draft pick. They won’t all be around for long, but all still have a few dollars left to throw away, so why not make sure they throw it away in New Hampshire and on you? Personally I’m planning on putting together my own political tour bus stealing from a classic New Hampshire idiom with my “They Can’t Get There From Here‌Or Anywhereâ€? tour. For a fee, I will take curious passengers on trips around New Hampshire to find some of the more obscure candidates like George Pataki, Bobby Jindal, Mike O’Malley and the once popular, but now political oddity, Rick Santorum. I will also get the campaigns

themselves to pay me for each passenger I deliver to their candidate under the false pretense that they are just there to gawk when it is really a setup to listen to a thirtyminute, last gasp attempt to get their vote. (A box lunch will also be served and we will have an extra one for the candidate after his speech – cash in advance.) I have a few other plans in the works right now as well. I may be renting out the guest bedroom to Jim Gilmore for a couple of nights once I can convince my wife that he really is a candidate for president. On the other hand, we are both disappointed that Lincoln Chaffee dropped out of the race as he had previously booked the room and it has put to rest our plans for promoting a “Spend The Night In The Lincoln Bedroomâ€? to future, going nowhere, campaigns who were looking for a little prestige. (Lesson learned: Always make sure you get a deposit.) All this should keep me busy for a few more weeks anyway. Time will soon run out as some of these candidates finally figure out that they don’t have a chance, but I plan to be there while they are still riding in the slipstream of ridiculousness. I hope I have inspired you as well to come up with some ideas of your own on how to cash in on the campaign season. Even if you don’t get onboard this time, don’t despair. In 2017, the next group will be showing up‌.sigh!! Brendan is the author of “The Flatlander Chroniclesâ€? and “Best Of A F.O.O.L. In New Hampshireâ€? which are available at www.BrendanTSmith. com

Melissa Harris-Perry Needs a Trip to Hard Work U MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry is the cable TV pioneer who broke the tastelessness barrier for feminists by wearing tamby Michelle Malkin pons as earSyndicated Columnist rings on air in 2013. This week, she made ignominious history again -- as the race-baiting fool in an ivory tower bubble who believes the words “hard worker” are a slur against black slaves and moms who don’t have health care. Caution: You may need a double dose of Excedrin to protect yourself from her brain-splitting nonsense. Earlier this week, Harris-Perry chastised a Latino Republican guest on her show to be “super careful” when using the phrase “hard worker” to describe white Republican Rep. Paul Ryan, RWisc., the newly elected House GOP Speaker. Why? “Because I actually keep an image of folks working in cotton fields on my office wall,” she bragged, “because it is a reminder about what hard work looks like.” Say what? Harris-Perry, an upper-crust Wake Forest University professor whose parents were both college officials, babbled on in the parlance of tortured political correctness that a white male Republican can only be a “hard worker” in the “context of relative privilege.” Only in academia is the colorcoding of one’s work ethic seen as the apex of progressive enlightenment.

But wait. One’s diligence is gender-weighted, too! Harris-Perry bloviated that “hard worker” is doubly offensive because of the imaginary plight of unnamed “moms who don’t have health care who are working,” but whom unnamed mean white Republican males call “failures.” Because of racism and sexism and patriarchal hegemony. Or something. Harris-Perry should get off her bigoted high horse and get educated about how real people in the real world value, encourage, and live the principles of hard work. It has nothing to do with color lines and everything to do with character. This truth was driven home for me during a recent trip to College of the Ozarks, proudly known as Hard Work U. The school, based near Branson, Missouri, is located in one of the most historically impoverished regions of the country. According to the college, founder and Presbyterian missionary James Forsyth found inspiration in a young boy named Benjy Cummings. Forsyth met the fourthgrader while he hunted squirrels for food. Benjy told the missionary that he was forced to drop out of school because his family could not afford to send him to Springfield to get an education. The private, Christian, four-year College of the Ozarks was established for economically disadvantaged students; 90 percent of enrollees must demonstrate financial need. All students are required to work 15 hours a week for a campus group or institution, ranging from admissions and agriculture, to the feed mill and fruitcake and jelly kitchen, to the health clinic,

A Scourge Against Our Republic We are getting way too complacent these days. As a nation, we are so used to politicians going back on their promises, we by Jane Cormier now vote to elect “the lesser of two Hooksett, NH. evils”. But, let us not fool ourselves. The lesser of two evils is still EVIL. The scourge of our Republic is what is known as Campaign Conservatives. Campaign Conservatives are politicians who tell us they will stand and support small government policies, then once elected, go out and vote to support bloated, big government legislation. Campaign Conservatives tell us they will stand to defund taxpayer- supported Planned Parenthood, then abdicate that stance under political pressure

from the Left. Campaign Conservatives will spout verse and chapter on being against amnesty, then quickly jump that “bi-partisan fence”, and support legislation which rewards illegal behavior. Campaign Conservatives will lecture how we need to be fiscally responsible and then will vote to raise the debt limit - again, and again, and again. Or, they will support job-killing legislation or Executive Orders from on high which inhibit and stifle job growth. The truth is Campaign Conservatives have been the scourge of our Republic because by electing them, we empower their behavior. By empowering them, conservatives will continue to have no voice at the table. Campaign Conservatives have rendered us mute. And, we have allowed them to do so. See cormier on 30

War, Sacrifice and America’s Veterans While we can all rejoice this Veterans Day that the steady flow of U.S. casualties in Iraq and by Dale Barnett Afghanistan has slowed National Commander, American Legion to a trickle, we must never forget the incredible sacrifice that America’s defenders continue to make on our behalf. Such is the case of Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler, who died leading a Delta Force rescue mission of ISIS hostages held

in Iraq on Oct. 22. A veteran of 14 combat deployments, his sacrifice is shared by four boys who are now fatherless and his wife, who became a widow far too early. But another important part of his legacy are the 70 hostages who were spared brutal executions by an enemy that is as ruthless as any that America has faced. The willingness to face pain and death so others can be spared isn’t unique to just the fallen. Consider the case of two American veterans and their longtime friend when they bravely stopped a terrorist attack aboard a train bound for Paris this summer. Airman First Class Spencer

Metzler glaring flaw Syndicated Columnist in a system where politically authoritarian regimes such as Ecuador, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela have won seats, and with it, an unjustified political legitimacy. In a joint briefing on the elections, representatives of both the Geneva-based UN Watch and New York’s Human Rights Foundation said some such candidates were “unqualified” to sit on the world organization’s 47 member Council. Hillel Neuer of UN Watch stated emphatically, “The election of even more rights abusing regimes on a body that already counts China, Russia, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia as members— marks another severe blow to the credibility and efficacy of a body that is supposed to improve on its discredited predecessor, by taking action to protect victims. It’s a black day for human rights.”

According to Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation, “There’s a moral relativism in the Human Rights Council,” nonetheless he stressed poignantly, “fundamental human rights are not up to negotiation.” He chided the Council which over the years “tragically refused to act on key issues,” such as not once criticizing Mainland China where millions still languish as political prisoners. As in many such UN organs, the Geneva-based Council’s members are regionally based. Using a methodology where human rights and press freedom ratings come from Freedom House, the Economist, and Reporters Without Borders, let’s then analyze the results. Africa There was a closed slate, pick five out of five. Burundi and Ethiopia gained seats as did Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya and Togo. Ethiopia is clearly listed as “not free” and an “authoritarian regime.” As one would imagine there are “restrictions on freedom of expression and the press, arbitrary arrests and detention, arbitrary killings and torture, and forced child labor.” Thus UN Watch and HRF label Ethiopia as “unqualified” to sit See Metzler on 30

Stone, Army Specialist Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Salder could have run from the danger when a heavily armed gunman boarded the train. Instead, Specialist Skarlatos said, “Let’s go,” as the men ran toward a future that could have easily meant instant death or maiming for them and all of the

other innocent people within range. Fortunately, this story is remembered not for the horrific tragedy that nearly happened but for the heroism that did. Even after enduring serious stab wounds that were inflicted as he disarmed the gunman, See barnett on 26

Hillary 2.0 Many people may share Senator Bernie Sanders’ complaint that he was tired of hearing about Hillary Clinton’s e-mails. But the controby Thomas Sowell versy is about Syndicated Columnist issues far bigger than emails. One issue is the utter disaster created by the Obama administration’s foreign policy in Libya, carried out by Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. An even bigger issue is whether high officials of government can ignore the law and refuse to produce evidence when it is subpoenaed. If they can, then the whole separation of powers -- the checks and balances in the Constitution -- gives way to arbitrary government by corrupt officials who are accountable to no one. This is not the first time Hillary Clinton has defied the law to cover up what she had done. When Bill Clinton was president, back in the 1990s, both he and Hillary developed the strategy of responding to charges of illegal actions on their part by stalling and stonewalling when either courts or Congress tried to get them to produce documents related to these charges. Hillary claimed then, as now, that key documents had disappeared. Her more recent claim that many of her e-mails had been deleted was just Hillary 2.0. Only after three years of stalling and stonewalling on her part has the fact finally come out this year that those e-mails could be recovered, and now have been.

By this time, however, Hillary and her supporters used the same tactics that both Clintons used back in the 1990s -- namely, saying that this was old news, stuff that had already been investigated too long, that it was time to “move on.” That was Hillary 1.0. More recently Hillary 2.0 said, melodramatically, “What difference, at this point, does it make?” One of the things that the former Secretary of State was now trying to cover up was the utter disaster of the Obama administration’s foreign policy that she carried out in Libya. Having intervened in Libya to help overthrow the government of Muammar Qaddafi, who was no threat to America’s interests in the Middle East, the Obama administration was confronted with the fact that Qaddafi’s ouster simply threw the country into such chaos that Islamic terrorists were now able to operate freely in Libya. Just how freely was shown in September 2012, when terrorists stormed the compound in Benghazi where the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, was staying. They murdered him and three other Americans who tried to defend him. Moreover, the terrorists did not even have to go into hiding afterwards, and at least one of them was interviewed by journalists. That’s how chaotic Libya had become. Meanwhile, there was an American presidential election campaign in 2012, and Barack Obama was presenting himself to the voters as someone who had defeated Al Qaeda and See Sowell on 30

“Thank you for your service.â€? We say it, but do we say it enough and to everyone who has earned our thanks? As citizens who enjoy great freedom and security as a result of our nation’s strong military, many Americans speak up and express their gratitude when they see a Service Member in uniform. But in New Hampshire, where so many of our Service Members are in the National Guard or Reserves and only don their uniforms on drill weekends or when deployed out of state or country, we don’t always have that opportunity. the less than 7/10 of one percent of U.S. citizens who currently serve in the Armed Forces are “citizen soldiers,â€? that is, trained warriors – ever ready to serve - who lead civilian lives much of the time. And what about the Veterans – people who served their country with valor and are now separated from the Armed Forces? They don’t wear their uniforms anymore. New Hampshire has the 8th highest Veteran population percapita. How and when do we thank them? Veterans Day – November 11th – is one of several touch-points throughout the year when Americans have a great opportunity to recognize all the men and women who have served our country. It’s a time to fly your flag and think about how you can make a difference for our Veterans who struggle due to their service. One very impactful way we can do this is to come together to serve those who serve. As President Dwight Eisenhower said in the first Veterans Day Proclamation, “in order to ensure proper and widespread observance‌ all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.â€? In New Hampshire, the Veterans Count initiative is a way for the citizenry to share in this common purpose. Veterans Count has provided over $2.2 million in financial assistance to NH Service

Members, Veterans, and military families to meet emergency and critical needs. This assistance is coupled with comprehensive care coordination through Easter Seals NH Military & Veterans Services staff. Easter Seals care coordinators work in partnership with other organizations throughout the state to ensure that members of NH’s military and veteran community have access to the help they need to thrive. Because the help is provided in the context of a plan for self-sufficiency, financial assistance from Veterans Count is not a “hand-out. Veterans don’t take hand-outs! But they have earned the right to a “hand-up from the citizens they pledged to protect. Easter Seals NH and Veterans Count are always looking for volunteers – individuals and businesses - who are passionate about helping Veterans. People who want to come together and say “thank you for your service in the truest sense. To refer a service member or veteran in need, please call Chrystn Fisher at 603.315.4354.For more information about Veterans Count or to make a donation, please visit vetscount.org or join us on Facebook or Twitter.

DARTMOUTH (FOOTBALL) IS BACK! Boston College has the closest truly big-time (NCAA FBS Division 1-A) college football program, but many Granite State college football fans have bonded with the University of New Hampshire football Wildcats over recent years, as Coach Sean McDonnell’s team regularly ranks nationally in Division 1-AA. But New Hampshire has another Division 1 team in little Hanover. Don’t forget Dartmouth College. Dartmouth’s Big Green was undefeated before dropping last Friday evening’s showdown at unbeaten Harvard, which won its 21st straight game as the Crimson seek a fourth Ivy League title in five years. The recent success enjoyed by coach Buddy Teevens’ Big Green gridsters rekindled some football energy in New Hampshire’s North Country, and yes, I’ll jump on Dartmouth’s bandwagon. Everyone likes to hang with winners! As a football town, Hanover will never be confused with Lincoln, Nebraska, or Norman Oklahoma, or Tuscaloosa, Alabama. But Dartmouth football has a rich tradition, going back almost 140 years. I did some internet surfing and confirmed my recollections of Big Green gridiron glory. The undefeated 1925 Dartmouth gridsters, then called the “Indians,” were National Champions, as

the Ivy League was the top conference in the land. (In 1920 Harvard defeated Oregon to win the Rose Bowl. Take THAT, Notre Dame and USC!) And then there was the famous “fifth down” game of 1940. Cornell University came to Hanover’s Memorial Field on Nov. 16 ranked #1 in the nation, looking for its 19th straight victory. A fourth quarter Dartmouth field goal gave the home team a 3-0 lead. In the final minute of play, the officials mistakenly gave Cornell an extra down, which the Big Red used to score a touchdown for a 7-3 win. When game films confirmed the error, Cornell players and coaches agreed with their University President that the Big Red should forfeit what was seen as a tainted victory. Dartmouth accepted the forfeit, ending the Cornell win streak. (Can you imagine Nick Saban offering to forfeit an Alabama win over Auburn?) MORE RECENTLY I recall going to Hanover as a kid to watch the 1970 Indians beat Brown University 42-14. That was one of Dartmouth’s closest games in an undefeated season that saw the team win the Lambert Cup, emblematic of the east’s top college football team. Penn State Coach Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions were only 7-3, and Paterno challenged Dartmouth to settle eastern supremacy on the field that December, but of course the game could not be scheduled. Dartmouth finished the season ranked #14 nationally, ahead of Penn State, USC, Oklahoma and other traditional football powers. The next season, ABCTV televised a Memorial Field showdown with Cornell, led by Ed Marinaro, who was Heisman Trophy runner-up that year. (He went on to play in the NFL

and then became a Hollywood actor.) Dartmouth won 24-14 to lay claim to another Ivy League title, in a game that was interrupted several times when a dog ran out on Memorial Field—something peculiar to Hanover, as opposed to South Bend. (An aside: Cornell had a defensive back on those days named John Paxton, who became a Marine Corps infantry officer in 1974. He later served as my first company commander when I was on active duty. Over 40 years later General Paxton still serves on active duty and

Cornell will visit Memorial Field again tomorrow evening (Nov. 6). I’ll be there as well for the big game as the Big Green hosts the Big Red. This game may not have national title implications, as in the days of yore, but perhaps Dartmouth’s grid ghosts may conspire to create a measure of Memorial Magic to remind us of times when our country’s top college football players played for the sheer joy of the game. Go Green!

Is Kelly Taking Orders From Shaheen, and Hassan? We are counting on you Mr. Speaker. Our children are counting on you. Our grandchildren by Niel Young Advocates Columnist are counting on you Mr. Speaker to re-instate a competitive America. An America that allows every person that works hard, no matter what class they come from, to excel and earn the path to be financially rewarded for what they know, and use their talented skills in the workplace. Where job description and salary package are between the employer and the applicant! Other than taxpayer funded employees and bureaucrats, government did not give you that job. Comments to Advocates received: “Kelly Ayotte was one of 18 Republicans to vote for the new two year fiscal disaster of a budget that the Senate passed last night. To quote a friend, this women is completely done to me. “Omnibus bills need to be flushed from the horizon of American governing. Each appropriation needs to be drafted and considered department by department at a minimum, with a zero based analysis, meaning that the budget has no built in inflationary aspect to its initial calculation. This could have been done by Boehner years ago, but being the good little pseudo fellow traveler that he is, always growing government and yielding to socialism, it wasn’t going to happen on his watch. Good riddance to bad trash. “Ayotte’s CR rating is going to go down from its current 29% when this vote is calculated

in. Think about that, it means she votes with the pure socialists 71% of the time, and that number is about to go up. She is not an independent. She is an enabler of big government. She thinks the most attractive political models lie in Europe, Venezuela, and other cesspools of Marxist redistributionist orthodoxy, not in Article 1, Section 8, of the US Constitution. “She must be removed from office November 8th next year. “I pray someone will primary her, if she doesn’t get an opponent, I will write in. Dear friend, Sen. Ayotte wants to keep that seat so much she, and her opponent Maggie Hassan, and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen are now in agreement on the Obama-Boehner plan to destroy America. Kelly voted with Shaheen, AGAIN! ******** Pam Geller (Breitbart) wrote: “Bernie Sanders Vows to Lead Fight, Not Against Jihad Terror, but Against ‘Islamophobia’. Once again, the party of treason is leading the fight not against those who are waging a holy war to destroy us, but against those who oppose jihad terror. Without many men and women standing for America, the Socialist Loons, the RINOs, will become very dangerous. This is where the rubber meets the road! The future of America, and your children and grandchildren is on the line! ******** Steve Elliot of Grassfire: “While most of America was sleeping, the RINO Senators were hard at work passing the BUDGET SURRENDER BILL that increased government spending by $80-100 billion over the next two

years AND gave President Obama a blank check to borrow as much money as he wants. At midnight, the Senate went back into session so Majority ‘Leader’ Mitch McConnell could move quickly on the three votes necessary to pass the BUDGET SURRENDER BILL, while you and I were fast asleep. “By 1:01 a.m., Senators approved the “cloture vote to end debate, which required a super-minority of RINOs to team up with every Senate Democrat to pass. Because the BUDGET SURRENDER BILL dramatically increases government spending and the deficit, the Senators then had to vote to ‘waive all applicable budgetary discipline.’ They actually had to agree to waive all budgetary discipline! “Then, finally, at 2:43 a.m., the BUDGET SURRENDER bill passed the Senate. ‘So under the cover of darkness, at a time when nearly all American citizens were sleeping, Establishment GOP Senators increased government spending by $80-100 billion and gave President Obama a blank check! ‘And here’s the kicker... In both the House and the Senate, it took only a SUPER-MINORITY of Republican RINOS to get in the proverbial big government bed with Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and pass the BUDGET SURRENDER bill! Nineteen RINO Senators and eighty RINO Representatives gave Obama his blank check on spending. “What McConnell and the other RINOs did last night is a travesty, a betrayal. It was bad enough that they voted to increase government spending and give Obama a borrowing See advocates on 22

TUFTONBORO COME ON DOWN ANDHOLIDAY ! OPEN HOUSE AFESTIVAL! ND CHECK IT OUT

Blue Jays Love House Paint by Steve White Contributing Writer

Every now and then, we receive reports from our customers that tend to boggle the mind. In these instances, we rely on established authorities of the wild bird world to assist us in aiding our clients with their predicaments. We believe the Cornell Lab of Ornithology of New York to be the foremost experts on wild birds and bird behavior. The Lab’s library of authentic bird sounds is unparalleled in the ornithological world. The slides we use for our presentations at schools and local civic organizations are from the Cornell Lab. Project Feeder Watch and Classroom Feeder Watch are just two of over a dozen different citizen scientist undertakings that the Cornell Lab have managed into international success stories. A few years back, we were getting complaints from our customers about blue jays pecking at their houses. Some people reported that they witnessed these birds actually eating paint chips. These reports became more prevalent during the early spring seasons. During the mating seasons that occur each postwinter, it is not uncommon to hear that birds are pecking on homes, telephone poles and hollow trees. These are usually due to the announcing of mating territories by dominant males. These examples provide excellent drums that other birds can hear from miles away. The unmistakable

sounds are irresistible to females and can be used as warning signs to competing males. However, we had never heard of blue jays consuming paint and so we embarked on a journey into the interesting world of strange backyard bird behaviors. It turns out that this pattern was occurring quite regularly in the Northeast, with New Hampshire leading the way in terms of complaints. Blue jays were indeed taking the paint off certain homes and eating the paint chips. What would be the reason for such unusually conduct? Our contacts in the Cornell Lab informed us that similar stories were reaching their scientists and they had concluded that the birds were simply attempting to obtain calcium for their diet. A quick call to various paint manufacturers revealed that their products use limestone as a key ingredient, which is an excellent source of calcium. Birds had discovered this and were taking advantage of this free, easy source of a vital nutrient. Scientists theorize that the blue jays, especially in the Northeast, may store calcium before the spring breeding season due to the fact that naturally occurring calcium may be in short supply. Calcium is crucial for egg laying. These homeowners soon discovered that if they offered crushed egg shells on simple trays, that the blue jays left their homes untouched. If you do not consume eggs in your household, consider asking your local restaurant if they would save all the egg shells each day for your use. If you explain your situation and provide them with a simple

NOVEMBER 14TH & 15TH

container, they may honor your wishes. Depending on the number of blue jays, it may take more than a few eggs to placate them until nesting season begins. Winter is on its way and soon the howling wind and bitting cold will remind us to stay inside and cozy up to some good food and warm drink. It is a time set aside for realizing the harvest, good friends and family, good times and, of course, great beer. This week, we celebrate yet another awesome creation from the one-and-only Henniker. Henniker Brewing Company is located in Henniker, NH. Founded in 2011, HBC has captured the attention of craft beer lovers in the NH beer scene. They are today a 30 barrel brew house exclusively sold in NH and distributed widely throughout the state in 22 oz bottles, growlers (half gallon bottles) and kegs for restaurants and taverns. Visit their website at www.hennikerbrewing.com “King Misanthrope is a traditional Russian Imperial Stout (RIS) coming out of their quite limited ‘Off the Grid’ program and the last of this series for this year. As defined on Henniker’s website, ‘Misanthrope is a person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.’ Misanthrope is a big (10% ABV) dose of malt, roasted coffee and chocolate with notes of molasses and earthy peat and wood. It is rich black with a pronounced mocha foamy head and abundant lacing throughout your sips. Other notes

D.A. LONG TAVERN arrive late; brown sugar, fruit and wood tannin. Your first taste reminds you of creamy or syrupy chocolate expresso. In fact, the flavor is so complex, you will want to re-examine this beer over and over... Decadent begins to describe how well balanced and gorgeous this stout tastes. What adds to the complexity is that the entire batch was aged in toasted maple wood whiskey barrels from a distillery in Lee, NH. This could be the reason for the earthy notes and woody flavor hints. This 22 oz bottle of goodness will fetch your richest regards to its endeavor and have you yearning for another chance to meet the king, but alas, it is

soon gone. Being a seasonal, you will want to find this one quickly; they just don’t last. It might still be available at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia but supplies are limited. (**At press time this beer was available on draft at the Union Diner. See their ad on this page for more info.) best part was kayaking on the Merrimack River. There is no kayaking in Afghanistan or Hollywood!” Fazli arrives back in N.H. on Veterans Day. He’ll be doing a special event at Plymouth State University on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 12. On Saturday, November 14, Fazli and Moffett will be doing a presentation and book-signing from 1-3 p.m. at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Manchester. “Afghanistan remains in the news,” said Moffett. “And with the immigration issue looming large, we should celebrate people like Fahim, who played by the rules to became a citizen. After realizing his Hollywood dreams he put on a uniform and went back into harm’s way for his adopted country. I loved Rock The Kasbah. It brought a tear to my eye, because while the movie is about a young girl named Salima pursuing her dream, it also represents a true story about a man named Fahim whose dream came true in America.”

“We’re competing with countless other proposals,” explained Moffett, “but we believe in Fahim’s story and we have some advantages, in that Fahim is of Hollywood.” Legendary Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is quoted on the book’s cover. “When Fahim Fazli speaks, we are fascinated.” Hanks worked with Fazli on the movie Charlie Wilson’s War. As the movie project moves forward Moffett wants to position New Hampshire’s White Mountains as a potential site for some of the Hindu Kush escape scenes. He and Fazli climbed Mt. Washington in 2014 and an Associated Press photo and story about their hike went all over the country. A premiere gala for Rock The Kasbah was held in New York City, on October 20, before its nationwide release on Oct. 23. But Fahim is looking forward to coming to New Hampshire. “I love New Hampshire,” said Fazli. “It was wonderful to meet Michael’s family and friends last year and to climb Mount Washington. But the

Many of the floor tiles in this photo don’t match the circled one. The homeowner thought they’d all match. my opinion, 65 percent of the blame is that of the tile store and the other 35 percent is on your shoulders. Your complaint is pretty common based on the email I’ve received over the years. One would think that tile store employees, managers and store owners would have heard thousands of these complaints. To solve the problem, when you choose the tile you want, the sales people should bring out a box from the warehouse and show you that the tile will show some variation in shade, pattern and other qualities. With this new information, you can then reconsider your choice if you don’t like the variations in each tile. You probably should

design, build or remodel your dream home

have asked for and paid for a full tile that you loved before you left the tile store. It’s your job to bring that tile home and set it aside. When the installer shows up with the tile, you then should open all the boxes of tile, pull out as many as you wish to check, and see if they match exactly the tile you brought home. If they don’t and you’re unhappy, that’s the time to get replacements -- not after they’ve been set in thinset on the floor or wall. As for your current tile, I must tell you that I don’t feel the tile is defective. Many tiles are made on purpose with the random color veining and pattern shift. My guess is the tile

DEAR SANDY: I’ve had many a sleepless night thinking about jobs myself. Usually, my insomnia has me pondering the best way to solve a challenge that’s one or two days in the future. Unfortunately, I get many an email like yours from distraught homeowners because of a mistake by a contractor or an out-ofcontrol job. I’m pretty sad to say that the color issue with the tile is not the fault of the installer. That problem is split between you and the tile store management. In

DEAR TIM: It’s 3 a.m. and I’m wondering how I’m going to resolve an issue in a few hours with a tile installer. First, the shading and color of all the tiles doesn’t match. In the photo I sent, the one I circled is what the tile at the showroom looked like. Many others have large brown patches of color in them I don’t like. Did the installer bring second-hand tile to the job? The installer also didn’t use plastic spacers when installing the tile. He’s coming to grout in four hours. What should I tell him to do? While the other guys were beating the bushes, I was driving around. In March of 1944, the 776th was shipped to England and tasked with protecting Plymouth Harbor from German air raids. At the end of July, Joe drove his truck off the ramps of an LST (Landing Ship Troops) in about four feet of water on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. He remembers observing the tragic bombing of St-Lo where many American soldiers were killed by their own bombs. “I saw the bombs falling and once in a while an airplane would come down. We were right on the Normandy beach. We’re probably ten miles away. You could feel the ground shake. Joe’s job consisted of transporting Anti aircraft batteries and their crew from one location to the next. Joe remembers: “We’d set our guns for a week or two weeks and Patton didn’t want any of these trucks idle. So he got all us guys that were truck drivers sitting around doing nothing for a week or two, to go on the Red Ball Express. The Red Ball Express was the name of an elaborate trucking opera-

We were eating K-rations and that stuff. And you would go for a week or two

without taking a bath or shaving. We used to drive twelve, fifteen hours with two drivers and we never stopped. We slept in the truck or on the ground under the truck or up in the canvas on top of the truck. In November 1944, while driving his truck somewhere near Metz, France, Joe spotted a jeep with his brother Harold’s regiment number. Joe blew his horn repeatedly until the jeep stopped and out came his brother. This chance encounter would remain the highlight of Joe’s wartime experience. Christian de Marcken was born an American citizen in Belgium in 1928 to an American father and a Belgian mother. Christian was the eldest of nine siblings. When Adolf Hitler invaded Belgium in 1940, the family briefly fled to France, but as France also fell to the Germans, the family found itself trapped under German occupation. They returned to Belgium to find that the castle where they lived had been taken over by a German Luftwaffe (Air force) motor pool. Before See hambucken on 20

The Wright Museum is closing the season with a special exhibit displaying the seldom-seen sketches by self-taught artist Charles Miller. These works provide an unfiltered look at the everyday life of G.I.s who fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Because Miller also wrote descriptions of what he portrayed on most of his sketches, his works are historical documents as well as art. The eighty-three sketches in the exhibit represent a fraction of the 700 works Miller created during his time in the Pacific.

they vacated the property, the Germans had soiled all the beds, plugged all the toilets, and destroyed all the furniture. At first the family was not harassed by the Germans as America was still a neutral country. This changed soon after Hitler declared War on the United States on December 11, following the Japanese surprise attack of Pearl Harbor four days earlier. Now considered an enemy of Germany, Christian’s father was arrested. Christian remembers the severe food rationing, and the way the Germans would burst through the doors in the middle of the night, gathering the family at gunpoint as they searched the house for any sign of resistance or illegal activity. When Christian’s father returned home after two years of captivity, he was so emaciated that his family did not recognize him. Christian’s wife Jeanne also grew up in Belgium

during the war. Among her most vivid memories of the war is the bombing of the city of Namur, Belgium by American B17 bombers. She and her sister Marguerite were traveling by train to visit an older sibling. The train was on a high overpass over Namur when it suddenly stopped and the air-raid sirens came on. From their extremely precarious vantage point, Jeanne and her sister witnessed waves of B17’s dropping their bombs over the city. The bombing killed 314 Belgian civilians and wounded about 1,000, but Jeanne and her sister were unhurt. They found out later that they had been standing precisely in the area that was supposed to be targeted. They owed their lives to the bombers’ notorious inaccuracy. Christian and Jeanne brought with them one of their most treasured mementos of the war: A large American flag. “Do you notice anything

rector Mike Culver noticed that the stars were sewn upside down. Dur-

ing the German occupation, Christian’s mother, Alix, set out to sew an American flag at great personal risk. She kept it hidden under a loose floor board in her room and worked on it late at night when she felt she was safe from German guards. As a Belgian national, Mrs. de Marcken was unfamiliar with the finer details of the American flag. She made a few mistakes, including the upside-down stars. On September 4, 1944, Mrs. de Marcken was shopping in town when she heard that the Americans were coming. She rushed home on her bicycle and told Christian to get the flag from under the floor board and raise it proudly in front of their house. You can find out more about Joe Landry and Christian de Marcken’s wartime experiences at: “http://www.veteransofthebattleofthebulge.org” Denis Hambucken lives in Lee, New Hampshire.

for nearly the entire 2.1 miles. The leaves off the trees heavily blanketed the trail and any hopes of seeing wildlife was dashed with every noisy rustled step we took up the mountain. About half way up we got a nice line of sight through the bare trees to the North Percy’s bald summit that was partially covered with clouds. “Oh no, I thought and hoped the clouds coverage would lift by the time we made the summit. Just before reaching the summit ledges the spruce treetops were frosted white with a coating of ice. They were the prettiest thing we saw as we walked into the clouds. The summit sign was in pieces and we walked around the ledgy summit. Blots in the ledges,

a USGS benchmark and part of an old cast iron stove are all that remain for evidence that a fire tower once stood here. We put on our down coats and hats and quickly decided it wasn’t looking good for the clouds to clear out anytime soon. Chalk up another peak on the “52 with a View list where didn’t get to see a view. We made quick work of the descent and we used our hiking poles to clear a few water bars to change things up on the hike down. Back at the car we jumped in and drove back down the Nash Stream Road to the Percy Peaks Trail. We enjoyed the car’s heat while we ate our peanut butter and honey sandwiches. We had our eyes peeled for another chance moose sight-

ing. Charlie did spy a fox carrying prey, perhaps a small bunny rabbit. Charlie and I had hiked the loop over North Percy together about ten years ago but we had skipped the herd path to the summit of South Percy. So up the trail to South Percy we went. The Percy Peaks Trail is steep and since we weren’t doing the loop today we would be descending this steep trail on the way back. The trail follows along the bank of Slide Brook and for the first mile the trail was covered with dry leaves even deeper than we had experienced on Sugarloaf. When we reached the bottom of the ledges it was so steep that the leaves and needles couldn’t pile up on the trail--they just rolled down the mountain. The orange blazes led

us to the top of the notch between North and South Percy where the trail intersects the yellow blazed Cohos Trail. We followed

the yellow blazes a 1/10th of a mile to reach the spur path to South Percy. There is now a nice sign See patenaude on 23

Nice view of South Percy and North Percy from Emerson Road near Stark, NH. If hiking isn’t your cup of tea the Nash Stream Valley is a nice place to take a Sunday Drive. During the winter months the area is a popular snowmobile destination.

Yours truly and my husband Charlie Gunn on top of South Percy with North Percy right behind us blocking the view to Sugarloaf Mountain. patenaude from 21

marking the path that reads South Percy. The rugged narrow spur path appears to see plenty of hiker traffic and it is a fun steep scramble of 3/10th of a mile to the top. Thankfully, the clouds had just lifted just above us opening the grand vista. We looked but couldn’t see Sugarloaf Mountain because the large bald summit of North Percy Peak was standing between us and the mountain. Oh! The view was wonderful. I pointed out to Charlie, Victor Head, the small peak that I had snowshoed up last winter after I cross-country skied from Christine Lake to reach its trail. The trip down the mountain was slow and deliberate, we had no desire to

take a tumble. We had a big day, either one of these hikes alone would represent a good day’s effort. But when in the North Country of New Hampshire we wanted to make sure we hike more hours than we drive in the car to get there! Winter will be here soon. I have already taken my winter clothes out of the closet and I have been eyeing my skis. Friends have skied Sunday River and Killington already! Think Snow and Have Fun. reducing environmental impacts; and capitalism is the best way to generate wealth for most people. The wealth generated by capitalism paid for the tremendous improvements in our environment in the last 50 years. I am sure there will al-

ways be ignorant, lazy, or jealous people who want an ever larger share, their “fair share, of the earnings of hardworking people, especially since politicians like President Obama encourage this socialist thinking. Yet after seven years of President Obama’s socialist policies,

the rich are much richer but most of us are poorer, many much poorer. This is no surprise to anyone who knows the history of socialist countries, e.g., the Soviet Union, China, or can see current socialist examples, e.g., Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea. Capitalism is the golden goose that enables people to rise from poverty to wealth. A recent example is the quick rise of hundreds of millions of Chinese people from poverty in the 20-30 years since

China embraced capitalism. Capitalism has given the American people a very high standard of living and enabled many people to become fabulously wealthy. Unfortunately politicians have been slowly killing American capitalism with regulations and taxes designed to favor the special interests that reward the politicians. As a result many millions of good American jobs have been and are still being destroyed, invest-

five times. These stories are inspiring, but certainly not surprising to me. As national commander of The American Legion, I meet veterans all of the time who have demonstrated tremendous heroism yet blend in our communities without fanfare. There are many ways to thank the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces, but I cannot think of a better method of showing gratitude than to hire one. Employers who make this smart decision will usually benefit from the discipline, skills and loyalty that are found abundantly in today’s military. Isn’t it likely that people who have survived firefights in Afghanistan can handle whatever tasks are thrown their way at

Airman Stone administered life-saving first aid to a passenger that was shot. The terrorist was carrying 270 rounds of ammunition. But because of the actions of these three young Americans, and two Europeans who assisted them, the death toll aboard the train was zero. There is also the incredible story of Chris Mintz. As others were understandably fleeing from a mass shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College on Oct. 1, the 30-year-old former Army infantryman bravely confronted the gunman at a classroom door, as he attempted to save others who were inside. Mr. Mintz survived the attack and continues to recover after being shot

President Jerry Davis, himself a remarkable American success story who rose from poverty in Appalachia, proudly notes that the college “carries no institutional debt” and codifies debt avoidance into the character education of the student body. “White privilege?” That’s a cynical construct of liberal egghead elites who depend on false narratives to stoke grievances and cable TV controversy. While I was at College of the Ozarks, I saw American kids doing the jobs that open-borders zealots and left-wing ideologues

I heard many stories of students who were the first in their families to attend college and who embraced hard work as a matter of duty, faith and patriotism. Unlike Ms. Harris Hyphen Perry, it never once occurred to me to rank the industriousness of the hard-working young people around me by their race. Sweat, after all, is colorblind. on the Council for the three year term. Asian Group The seats were contested with seven candidates for five seats. First some good news; South Korea won a seat as did the Philippines. But in a stunning development Pakistan, who was tipped to win the seat, fell short in the General Assembly ballot. Sadly in Pakistan entrenched discrimination against religious minorities is part of the political landscape, and thus the government in Islamabad was not qualified to sit on the Council. Other Asian countries who won seats were Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and United Arab Emirates. Eastern Europe Two out of two seats went to Georgia and Slovenia. Though Georgia has a mixed record on some issues, let’s not forget parts of the country has been dismembered by neighboring Russia. Slovenia, is one of the most successful states to have broken from former Yugoslavia. Latin American and Caribbean Group Here there were four countries contesting three places. It’s richly ironic that V e n ezuela, a country

which continues to crack down on political dissent, a free press, and allows arbitrary arrest and detentions, won a seat. Diego Arria, a distinguished diplomat who once served as Venezuela’s UN delegate told the audience, “A nation of free people that I was privileged and proud to represent has transformed into a real Gang that under the military, political and police control of the Cuban regime, rules my country.” He added that Venezuela had become a “dictatorial and militarized” state. Although the current president remains in the shadow of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s former socialist leader, Ambassador Arria told this writer, that Nicolas Maduro, “is far more dangerous than Chavez.” Given Venezuela’s slide deeper into authoritarianism with the approach of national elections, Ambassador Arria predicted, “Maduro’s future is in the Hague,” a clear allusion to the international criminal tribunal facing the president. Among other Latin American countries Ecuador and Panama won seats. Western Europe Good news here. In selection for three out of three places, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland won seats.

Their role on the Council is richly merited. “It’s an outrage that the UN entrusted the world’s human rights protection to some of the world’s worst dictatorships and authoritarian regimes,” stated HRF’s Halvorssen. So the very high priests of global human rights have in fact become some of the most politically tainted and authoritarian regimes who will proudly sit judgement. The absence of competition in some regional categories moreover illustrates the prevailing power of backroom deals, hardly unusual at the UN . Yet raising regimes such as Venezuela and Ethiopia to the Human Rights Council opens a Kafkaesque interpretation both to its future proceedings as well as the Council’s credibility. John J. suppressed the terrorist threat in the Middle East. Obviously the truth about this attack could have totally undermined the image that Obama was trying to project during the election campaign, and perhaps cost him the White House. So a lie was concocted instead. The lie was that the attack was not by terrorists -- who supposedly had been suppressed by Obama -- but was a spontaneous protest demonstration against an American video insulting Islam, and that protest just got out of control. Now that Hillary Clinton’s e-mails have finally been recovered and revealed, after three years of stalling and stonewalling, they showed explicitly that she knew from the outset that the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens and others was not a result of some video but was a coordinated terrorist operation. Nevertheless, Hillary 2.0, along with President Obama and national security advisor Susan Rice, told the world in 2012 that the deaths in Benghazi were due to the video, not a terrorist organization that was now operating freely in Libya, thanks to the policy that got rid of the Qaddafi government. Yet that key fact was treated by the media as old news, and what was exciting now was how well Hillary 2.0 outperformed the Congressional committee on television. If the corruption and undermining of the American system of Constitutional government eventually costs us our freedom, will the media say, “What difference does it make now?” Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. Personally, I am disgusted at the current state of affairs. It is an enigma to me how so many people can settle for “the lesser of two evils”. By doing so, we are giving away our power as a voting block to those who have demonstrated their contempt for our support. To those who say, “there’s nothing we can do”, or “they are all corrupt anyway”, you are absolutely abdicating your responsibilities to strengthen our Republic. “They” are elected by “Us”, and by not standing up and saying NO MORE, we are getting exactly what we deserve - a corrupt political process which does nothing but grow more centralized, governmental power. Campaign season is approaching and the Campaign Conservatives are out in full force. My suggestion to you is to NOT support them. If you vet a candidates’ voting record, and find their rhetoric does not match the votes, then do not support them. It is very simple. Perhaps we need to hand the money/power brokers within the political sphere, some hard losses. Maybe then, the “Powers That Be” will deliver and support candidates with integrity. This will never happen if we continue to vote for “the lesser of two evils”. Sometimes you need to be ready to lose in order to win again. Our Republic only works if we actively participate in the process. No more “freebies” for this undeclared voter. Integrity counts. And so does my vote. I intend to use it.
