A Farm Christmas To Remember…..

canes and hand-made paper ornaments strung with baling twine. We’ve often wondered if this festivity was really for the animals, or more for our own enjoyment. Well, one year, we found out the answer to that question. There’s a legend that says, at midnight on Christmas Eve, all animals are magically able to speak in human tongue. So each year, my kids, husband and I sneak out to the barn at the enchanted hour, trying to catch the animals in conversation. Although we’ve never actually been witness to this legendary phenomenon, one particular year we came really close. That night, as my family tiptoed out to the barn, we

Recently, I was listening to Christmas carols, when the song, “Dominick the Donkey” triggered a stroll down memory lane for me, laden with Christmas-Past mishaps here on the farm. One such memory involves the tradition of decorating the inside of our barn for Christmas each December. After all, we don’t want our barn family members to be jealous of their house-pet siblings. So every year we hang stockings on the stall doors, and cut a Charlie Brown tree from our land, to adorn the middle aisle of the barn. Then we painstakingly dress the tree with candy

At Reuben’s Rescue Ranch in Danbury, the tradition is to give the barn animals their own Christmas Tree which they use to celebrate in their own special way. Dawn On The Farm columnist Dawn Thomson tells the tale.

On Saturday, December 6th, from 1-3pm, Weirs Times and Cocheco Times editor and F.O.O.L. in New Hampshire columnist, Brendan Smith will be at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library to tell a few Flatlander stories and sign copies of his book “The Flatlander Chronicles” an hilarious description of his life as a “Flatlander”. Brendan’s wife, Kimberly J. B. Smith, who readers know as Art Girl, will be the Artist in Residence at the library for the month of December and she will be debuting some of her new works. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Pair Of Pants

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Brendan is on vacation this week. We are reprinting this column from November 26, 2008. It is also one of the stories in his soon to be published “Best Of A F.O.O.L in New Hampshire. I went to Pauli’s Pants Palace to buy a pair of pants. “Welcome To Pauli’s Pants Palace, was written on the banner over the front door. “Welcome To Pauli’s Pants Palace, beamed the greeter inside the front door. A large sign proclaiming “Women’s Pants was on the left. One heralding “Men’s Pants was on the right. I went right. “Can I help you find anything today? asked the perky saleswoman. (“Yes, my uncle Freddie has been missing for going on ten years now, I was hoping you might know where he is.) “Just looking, thanks, I answered with a saying right out of the “How To Answer A Salesperson playbook. “Just so you know, she continued in her well rehearsed spiel. “We are having a special sale today on all the pants here at Pauli’s. Twenty-five percent off on the second pair of pants when you buy the first pair at full price. Of course, if you are a Pauli’s Pants Privileged Patron, you get an extra ten percent off every pair of pants

from the third pair on with a limit of six pair in the same size. On Thursdays, if you are over fifty years of age, you can get up to seven pair with at least one pair a different size than the rest. Are you a Pauli’s Pants Privileged Patron? “Uh, no, I answered with another classic from the playbook. “Well, when you check out today simply tell the cashier you’d like to be a Pauli’s Pants Privileged Patron and you can get an automatic five percent off your third pair today. “Okay. Thank you. “No problem. Let me know if you need anything else. I was finally left to my own defenses. I went to the jeans section. Hmmm. There was “Comfortable Jeans, “Standard Jeans, “Really Tight Jeans, “Not So Tight But Snug Jeans, “Loose And Floppy Jeans, “I Have The Same Size Waist I Had In High School If I Wear Them Around My Knees Jeans, “I Know These Are Way Too Tight But I Only Need Them For One Night To Look Good At The Reunion Jeans, “I Really Don’t Care How I Look Jeans and, of course, “Classic Fit Jeans. I found one of each in my size and made my way towards the dressing rooms. “How many pair do we have today, asked another perky salesperson. I looked around to see who was behind me to make up the “we. There was no one. “Uh, nine, I said, hoping I was correct. She placed a ribbon, attached to a large wooden block with the number “9 on it, around my neck. “I’ll be right here if you have any questions, she assured me. (“What is the total square mileage of the northern portion of the continent of Africa went through my head, but I let

it go.) It took me about twenty minutes to try on all of the pants. This didn’t include the time it took me to get the wooden block from around my neck and the time it took to answer “No thank you, I’m fine, to each different perky voice that asked me through the door if I “had any questions? I finally decided on the “Classic Fit Jeans. I left the dressing room and returned the wooden block to the table out front. “Did you find everything you were looking for? (“I scraped and clawed through every inch of that dressing room and not a single bar of gold could I find.) I wended my way past perkiness and made my way to the cashier. “Good afternoon, screeched the cashier. “Did you get help from any of our salespeople on the floor today? “Yes, I believe all of them made contact at one point or another. “Great. Is this it? Just one pair? “Yes. Playbook answer number one. “Are you a Pauli’s Pants Privileged Patron? “Uh, no. “Well then, would you like to apply to be one today? It will only take a few minutes. “No thanks. “Well then, would you like to donate a dollar to The People Without Pants Fund? If you do you automatically get ten percent off today’s purchase. I thought for a second. That would definitely be more than a dollar. I can be as altruistic as the next bargain shopper. “Sure. “Great, I’ll just need your phone number, email, zip code, address, age, weight, height, pants size and faSee smith on 26

To The Editor: We do not tolerate schoolyard bullies, cyber bullies, workplace bullies, domestic bullying, and even siblings that bully each other. We believe when someone says, “no, their objection should be respected. One definition of bullying is: a dominating, overbearing person or entity who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. Bullying can be described as healthharming, mistreatment of one or more persons by one or more perpetrators. Bullying is considered abusive conduct that threatens, humiliates, or harms another. I live in Alexandria, NH and our town has been repeatedly approached by corporate industrial wind developers that want to “set up shop here on our pristine ridgelines in our very rural community. These corporate developers are global, multibillion dollar companies with a well paid staff of corporate lawyers, that are looking to protect their investment and those of their stakeholders, not the people or ecosystems that thrive here. Alexandria has repeatedly said, “no to corporate industrial wind turbine projects in our town. We had a resolution vote in March of 2013 expressing the people’s sentiment against industrial wind turbines here. In March of 2014 we adopted a binding ordinance that prohibits the siting or operation of corporate energy systems controlled by state and federal energy

policies - such as corporate industrial wind - within the town of Alexandria. Our town Master Plan speaks of maintaining the rural aesthetics of the town. Public meetings have revealed over and over again the overwhelming voice of the people saying, “no to corporate industrial wind projects in Alexandria. Yet, Energias de Portugal Renewables (EDPR), a global Portuguese corporation with far more money and power than the people of Alexandria, continues to force the Spruce Ridge wind project against our objection. They are corporate bullies that even went so far as to file suit against the town because our selectmen listened to, and represented the objection of the people to grant a conditional building permit for a MET tower needed by EDPR to gather wind and bat data for their corporate project. The town of Alexandria was counseled to grant the permit because we had no legal basis to deny it. We were forced to comply against our will. Now, EDPR has filed with the FAA for 29 turbines spanning five towns including Alexandria, and even stated they intend to move forward with a state application that could permit them to construct the project. The SEC would have the final say - not the community affected by the project, but a conglomerate of state agencies known as the Site Evaluation Committee. EDPR claimed they listened to the people Alexandria and that is why they

reduced the number of turbines within our town. But “no means “no - we don’t want any industrial turbines here. Is it okay to bully so long as you reduce the bullying? Generally speaking, we find it unacceptable to tolerate bullying to any degree in society. It should be unacceptable for EDPR to be dominating, overbearing, habitually badgering, intimidating, and threatening, towards the people and ecosystems of rural Alexandria. EDPR, stop bullying the people of Alexandria! Michelle Sanborn Alexandria, NH.

The Little Children To The Editor: Welcome news! Congress recently passed and the President signed a new law, the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act, which amplifies and improves our child care program. It not only provides grants to states to help low-income parents who work or who are enrolled in school to obtain child care, it also monitors child care facilities to insure quality and safety and provides for increased parent education and support. What a difference this will make for families who no longer have to choose between making a living and having their children cared for, in the lives of children who will benefit from a stable and positive environment and for the country when these children grow up and beSee mail boat on 26

Obama’s “Temporary” Ebola Amnesty When it rains, it pours. Just before unveiling his colossal administrative amnesty for millions of “undocumented” by Michelle Malkin a l i e n s a n d Syndicated Columnist foreign tech workers on Thursday, President Obama separately ordered up to 8,000 more executive pardons and special work passes for Liberians, Sierra Leoneans and Guineans illegally in this country. Strange, isn’t it? The same administration that refused to enact travel bans from Ebola-plagued West African nations to protect Americans is now granting “temporary protected status” (TPS) to West Africans on American soil so they don’t have to go back. It’s not really about public health, of course. It’s about political pandering and electoral engineering. Here’s the dirty open secret: There’s nothing “temporary” about TPS benefits. Under both Democratic and Republican administrations, the program has become an endless, interminable residency plan for unlawful border-crossers, visa overstayers and deportation evaders from around the world. TPS golden ticket holders live here, work here, travel freely and are immune from detention or deportation. They are eligible to apply for an “adjustment of status,” which puts them on the path to green cards and eventual citizenship. In theory, TPS is a short-term humanitarian program built on good intentions. The secretary of homeland security “may des-

ignate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country’s nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately.” Those conditions include hurricanes, environmental catastrophes, civil war, epidemics and other “extraordinary and temporary conditions.” In October, the White House extended TPS status and employment permits for an estimated 90,000 illegal alien Hondurans and Nicaraguans “for an additional 18 months, effective Jan. 6, 2015, through July 5, 2016.” Who are these TPS winners? Well, they’ve been here since 1998 -- when Hurricane Mitch hit their homeland. That was 16 years ago. Their “temporary” status has been renewed a dozen times since the Clinton administration first bestowed it. Last October, the Obama administration extended TPS to an estimated 3,000 Syrian illegal aliens; the status will be up for renewal next March. At least 3,700 Liberians who have been here since 1991 on TPS won deferred deportations in September before securing renewed TPS status this week. And several hundred Somalis remain in the country with TPS first granted in 1991, along with some 700 Sudanese who first secured TPS benefits in 1997. TPS for both the Sudanese and Somalis was extended in September and lasts until May 2016. An estimated 250,000 illegal aliens from El Salvador first won TPS golden tickets after an earthquake struck the country in January 2001. Their latest extension was granted last May and

Gun Rights Are Women’s Rights Rally! On Saturday, Dec. 6 from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the State House in Concord, folks will get to hear some great speakby Jane ers from the Cormier Women’s Hooksett, NH. D e f e n s e League of NH as well as other local gun organizations at the Gun Rights are Women’s Rights Rally. This is an opportunity to support our 2nd Amendment and share solidarity with others who respect our founding principles and documents. The Women’s Defense League of NH believes in empowering women to feel ready and able to defend themselves and learn practical self-defense skills in defense of our Second Amendment rights. The Chair of the

organization is Susan Olsen and along with Margot Keyes, President and Michelle Levell, Vice President, this women’s organization is not a fluff organization. These women are tough, knowledgeable and ready to take on any breach of our natural right to gun ownership. I expect the speakers at the rally will be more than inspiring, rousing those in attendance to continued defense of our 2nd Amendment. People may not know this, but more women than ever now own guns. There has been a huge surge in popularity of classes, memberships, certifications, apparel, and gun conferences for women. More and more women are actively getting involved in the political gun debate and I for one, am quite happy to see this happen. This is true empowerment of women. Rather than take up the old See cormier on 7

canard that “guns are bad”, women are now understanding that guns level the “playing field”, so to speak. If a woman is attacked, and if they are an educated gun owner, they stand a good chance of not becoming another victim. I believe women can and should train and educate themselves with firearms. While the Progressive left seeks to weaken our 2nd Amendment rights, we need to boldly stand against such infringement. In 2012, Moms Demand Action incorporated in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. As strong advocates for gun control legislation, this group has had millions of dollars pour in from left organizations to offer the narrative that guns are out of control and more gun control legislation is imperative. In response to this group, Moms Against Gun Control formed to directly respond to Moms Demand Action with their own message - NO new gun restrictions. And right here in New Hampshire, groups like the Women’s Defense League con-

lasts until March 2015. In addition, 60,000 illegal alien Haitians received TPS after earthquakes in their homeland in 2010. Their “temporary” status was renewed in March and extended “for an additional 18 months, effective July 23, 2014, through Jan. 22, 2016.” As I’ve reported previously, TPS beneficiaries are supposed to provide proof that they arrived here on an eligible date, committed no more than two misdemeanors and no felonies, and maintained a continuous presence in the country. But the feds’ past experience with amnesties dating back to 1986 shows that the programs are dangerously rife with unchecked document fraud. A homeland security source pointed out to me recently that the agency is still failing to check biometric records (or, even worse, ignoring them) before granting immigration benefits to aliens who had been put into removal proceedings but then gamed the system by using new, unvetted aliases. Moreover, after more

tinue this battle in educating women about gun ownership. The fact is New Hampshire is just about the safest state in the nation with regard to gun ownership. The last thing we need is more restrictive and anti-liberty gun legislation to deal with a problem that does not even exist! As we move toward a new legislative session in our state government, it would be great to have a large, lively group in attendance at this rally. This is an opportunity to actively stand against those who seek to restrict our 2nd Amendment rights. I, for one, look forward to speaking at this “Gun Rights are Women’s Rights” rally. I hope you will be there with us and that you bring lots of friends and family. This is one of those opportunities to stand and be heard. We hope to see you on Dec. 6 in front of our State House in Concord 12:00 pm sharp. Be there or be square! Jane Cormier can be reached at jane4newhampshire@gmail. com

than two decades, the federal government still doesn’t have an entry-exit database in place to track legal short-term visa holders. The dictionary informs us of the origin of the term “amnesty.” It comes from the Greek word “amnestia,” which means “to forget.” And that is exactly what America is suffering from when it comes to learning amnesty history lessons. There is no such thing as a “temporary” pardon from immigration law-breaking. Each new infusion of indiscriminate, unskilled foreign labor begets more of the same -- all while backstabbing politicians bemoan stagnant wages, high unemployment and the beleaguered plight of American workers paying a steep price for D.C.’s bottomless “compassion” for the rest of the world. Beware of Our Betters Jonathan Gruber’s several videotaped remarks about the gross deceptions that got ObamaCare passed in Congress should tell by Thomas Sowell us a lot about Syndicated Columnist the Obama administration. And the way that the mainstream media hesitated for days to even mention what Professor Gruber said, while they obsessed over unsubstantiated charges against Bill Cosby, should tell us a lot about the media. Whatever did or did not happen between Bill Cosby and various women is not likely to affect the lives of 300 million Americans. But ObamaCare does. For both the politicians and the media, this was not just an isolated incident. Gruber’s videotaped discussions of the complicated deceptions built into ObamaCare with his help, designed to take advantage of what he called the “stupidity” of the public, are all too typical of the role played by the political left. Neither the politicians nor the intelligentsia -- including the media -- want that role exposed for what it is. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi acted as if she had never heard of Jonathan Gruber, and had no idea who he was. But she too had been caught on tape, a few years ago, citing

him as someone whose support of ObamaCare was supposed to show that the “experts” knew how good it was. President Obama gave a somewhat more sophisticated version of the same act. He pointed out that Professor Gruber was not part of his staff. But he did not mention that Gruber had been to the White House 19 times, and the Obama administration had paid Gruber about $400,000 of the taxpayers’ money for his supposedly unbiased expert opinion. Gruber’s own statements seem to indicate that his mathematical models were enough to baffle the Congressional Budget Office in its efforts to figure out how ObamaCare works. That kind of expertise apparently does not come cheap. Moreover, the 400 grand is chump change compared to the millions that Jonathan Gruber has reportedly raked in from state governments for his expertise. Barack Obama is currently playing the same political game of parading experts by citing a list of prominent law professors who say that he is not exceeding his Constitutional power by granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. Someone at the Fox News Channel has checked out these professors and found that every one of them whose political registration could be traced is a Democrat. But the names of these profs See Sowell on 26

When Debbie Sennett of San Diego California purchased a yearling horse named Slinky, (registered as Smooth Artist) to add to her stables in 2002, she had no idea what the next twelve years had in store for her, and the story that unfolded is quite remarkable; a glowing example of how we can never know what lies around life’s next bend. For the next year, Debbie trained Slinky as a show horse with notable success, and life was good. But the following year brought a life-shattering divorce, and the financial quagmire that so often attaches to that anguish. She was forced to sell all of her horses, except Slinky. In February 2007, floundering in financial uncertainty, Debbie moved to NH to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Working as an LPN, she found work in Dover, and purchased a home in Alton. As much as she tried rebuilding her life, financial woes hounded her, and by 2009 her home was in foreclosure, and she made the agonizing decision to sell Slinky; she simply could not af-

After Five years of separation, Debbie Sennett is reunited with her beloved Slinky aka Rusty. ford to keep him. Unable to sell him and financially cornered, she resorted to trusting her farrier to find a quality, loving home for him, and they parted. As a result of this crushing separation, Debbie forced all things equestrian from her mind and life. She couldn’t as much as look at a photo of a horse. This went on for five years, one day this past September, she ended up taking her grandsons, Aiden and Logan to the Deerfield Fair. Live and Let Live Farm had a booth set up there, with a game of rubber duckies in a kiddie pool. Her younger grandson Logan, 7, was enamored with the game, and kept steering Debbie back to it. Sharon Morey, a LLLF volunteer working the booth, struck up a conversation with Debbie, and as painful as it was to discuss, Debbie ended up explaining her

story to Sharon. The two felt an immediate bond of friendship. Despite Debbie’s apprehension, Sharon eventually managed to talk her into visiting LLLF for the weekly Sunday tour. With reticence and hesitation, Debbie was at the farm the very next Sunday. She found herself liking the farm, and slowly allowed herself to enjoy being around horses again. As the group walked around the farm enjoying the animals, they stopped at one of the horse paddocks. Debbie was positioned near the fence with her back to the horses inside the paddock, and listening to the discussion, when she heard a whinny behind her, and she turned to see who was “talking” to her. The horse had recognized her from the middle of the paddock, and See philbrick on 10

heard quite the commotion coming from inside. Expecting to at last experience the miracle we’d only imagined up until then, we quickly swung open the barn doors and flipped on the lights with great anticipation! An immediate hush filled the air. Disappointment washed over us, as we realized that, once again, we had missed the big event. We were, however, in for a different surprise. Instead of the animals being cozily bedded down in their stalls, as we’d left them earlier that evening, our donkeys, goats, horses and even our llama, were all congregated in the center aisle of the

As you may or may not know I tend to think pragmatically about everything. I owe much of that practical thinking to the Marine Corps. “Situational Awareness, “Presence of Mind, “No decision is a decision by default, and on and on it goes. The whole notion that planning and common sense are essential in helping you to live a better life is also consistent with retirement. In spite of what I think is common to my way of thinking there are people who come to my office that think very differently. Many still believe that growing their monies with an abundance of risk troubles me. In other words getting a few more percentage points is worth risking the vast preponderance of their family’s wealth!! Why? I believe in part this is due to “Social Disinformation, and the mentality that the stock market will continue to rise indefinitely. In meeting after meeting there is no telling these good hard working American’s anything differently. The markets they believe go up and down naturally. However; when you are in retirement mode like many Senior Americans protecting and growing retirement dollars safely is more important than making a little extra at the expense of your wealth! The idea of making the right choices with your monies is understanding Core Concepts of income payments in perpetuity with your “tax qualified accounts. Simply stated my clients cannot afford to lose their monies to a major correction in the stock market. Many of the people that visit with me after one of my dinner meetings try to understand, but in many instances still opt for the risk, and unfortunately that can be tragic. It’s difficult to get those monies back after a major correction. So it is what it is, sadly!

So when do you know it’s time to pull your monies from the risky stock market? Well when the Federal Reserve stops the printing of 75 billion a month. If you hear that the Federal Reserve is tightening the money supply and you hear of inflationary pressures. These are key phrases that may signal that a correction is imminent. Remember the past doesn’t have to equal the future be “aware. Pay attention this time and have the “presence of mind, and pay attention to the economic indicators that spell a train wreck coming to your IRA, 401(k) or Nonqualified accounts. Talk with your Investment Advisor about reducing risk in your portfolio. If you have tax qualified monies making asset allocation changes will not trigger off a taxable event. approached her with an “I missed you” kiss. It was indeed, her beloved Slinky; a little older, a little thinner, and with a little more of life’s pain glinting in his eyes, but it was him. Both were in shock for several minutes as they stared and nuzzled. Someone snapped a photo of the moment. Oddly, Slinky and his paddock-mate had arrived at the farm from a rescue, just a few days earlier. He had, somewhere along the line, been renamed “Rusty.” She lost him once, and there was no way she was going to let him slip from her again. In a final

whisper of fate, Debbie talked to Teresa Paradis and found that $100 can secure a one month sponsorship with an option to adopt. Quite accustomed to being broke at this point, she inexplicably found a $100 bill in her pocket. “I have no idea when or how that money got there,” she later said, “but I was able to leave the farm knowing that my boy was safe, and we were reunited. My soul is whole again. My heart is full.” Debbie is now a fullfledged volunteer at “the farm,” reunited with her beloved Slinky (a.k.a. Rusty). Both are part of

Feeding wild birds, especially during the winter months, generally is assumed to be beneficial. But could there be a downside to this enjoyable hobby that over 63 million people participate in? If birds become overly dependent on humans and their feeders, would they fail to develop, or lose, the ability to forage efficiently on naturally occurring foods? Our loyal costumers and listeners to our radio show have many questions regarding this topic. We will be using an actual scientific study to help you understand this ongoing debate about serving food to wild birds and then you decide. This will be a twopart series. Today’s article will describe, in detail, the actual process used in the study. Next article, we will report the findings and conclusions of this exhaustive study. From 1984-1988, Professor Margaret Brittingham of the University of Wisconsin conducted scientific studies involving black-capped chickadees. Chickadees are one of the smallest birds that remain in the north during winter. They are also one of the most common resident birds found in most regions of the northern range of the USA. The small body size and high metabolic rate create a large need for energy. They spend much of the daylight hours foraging for food. At night, they roost in protected areas and become hypothermic. Even with this process, chickadees can lose 10% of their body weight overnight. They must find

food to survive each and every day during the winter months. Professor Brittingham decided to compare two very distinct groups of chickadees in the Wisconsin regions. She banded both groups with the help of volunteers and monitored their food intake. The first group of chickadees, about 35, had never seen bird feeders. We know that chickadees have a limited feeding range, approximately one mile. She chose an area of woods miles away from any human habitat. The second group of chickadees was located in the same region, but near human feeders that had been in existence for over 20 years. These potentially-dependent birds were about 49 in total. The color coded bands allowed researchers to monitor the number of visits to feeders filled with sunflower seeds that each bird used prior to the start of the study. Both groups were observed in their natural surroundings for two years. After that, she had the volunteers immediately remove all bird feeders from the second group before the next winter season approached. Both banded groups of chickadees would experience the same weather during the upcoming October-April study period. Average low temperatures were below

freezing with many days during this time frame below zero. No attempts were made to offer any human foods sources. After generations of human feeding, would the second group of chickadees know how or where to search for natural foods sources? Could these feeder-dependent birds survive a typical winter without succumbing to the elements? In our next article, we will answer these and many more questions regarding wild bird dependency on backyard bird feeders. In the meantime, enjoy the extraordinary sights that birders are experiencing this winter season. It is probably the best in over a decade. Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. at least. We’ve since taken to throwing their tree in the paddock after the holidays, specifically for our farm friends’ snacking pleasure…..minus the ornaments and candy wrappers of course!

Trails that were already covered with man-made snow offered stellar snow conditions and miles of smooth grooming. Due to the big snow dump trail counts jumped higher with more trails opening on just natural snow. Nordic Centers across the state were able to open too. This has to be a first that Gunstock’s Nordic Trails were groomed and the cross country skiers were able to get out before the skiers and snowboarders swarmed the mountain. Gunstock Mountain Resort plans to open the downhill area on December 5th. As soon as the Mr. Kilowatt returned to our home Charlie and I jumped in the car and headed straight to the Bretton Woods Nordic Center. The snow up north was not as wet so the North Country didn’t experience power outages. The snow groomed really nicely. On Friday afternoon the sky was still dark and another fluffy inch of snow accumulated as we skated around my favorite cross country ski trail, Dark Forest. I know weather is fickle and I sincerely hope that we have many more See PATENAUDE on 17

Crisp and cold, no wind and plenty of snow made it a blue bird day on the trails at Bretton Woods Nordic Center. The big snow dump made it possible for resorts all over New Hampshire to open a record number of trails over the holiday weekend. PATENAUDE from 16

days like we had this past weekend this winter. Saturday was a blue bird day, crisp and cold and no wind. Only my second day on snow and this day is already a serious contender for the best day of the season. And winter isn’t even officially here yet! We were first in line to board the Eagle Cliff chairlift at Cannon on Saturday morning. I don’t know how we were able to perform this feat; there were more than a couple dozen people behind us when the rope was dropped at 8:30 am. We made first tracks down Rocket and rode the Zoomer chair the rest of the morning. The snow guns were blowing wildly above in preparation of opening the upper lifts

soon. Ski season is off to a great start and all this snow should excite you to make big plans this winter. Here are a few suggestions: Buy a season pass to your favorite resort. The sooner you buy it the better deal you will find and you can start using it right away. There are many options, everyday, weekday only and night skiing. If a pass feels like too big a commitment many resorts are offering pre-Christmas specials such as buy a package of three lift tickets for a drastically reduced rate. Check out SkiNH.com for more information. Join the fun and take part in an adult race league! Sign-up your team or ask to be assigned to a team, honestly anyone

can do it. I believe every resort offers some version of adult racing for skiers, snowboarders and the

weeks. Teams are racing at Pats Peak four nights a week, Monday through Thursday. Gunstock rocks on Monday afternoons and on Thursday nights. Loonatics are sliding through gates at Loon mid-day on Thursdays. At Crotched Mountain they’re racing two nights a week, Wednesday and Thursday. The granddaddy of adult racing, Ski Meisters at Cranmore continues their tradition with about 500 racers competing each Wednesday. Take a friend to the mountain. Share the joy of being outside and sliding on snow. You can help them make this the season that they will learn. Beginner programs are a bargain and include rental equipment. Actually there are coaching programs for all levels. The better you are the more fun you will have on the trails. Have Fun.

Fred Fuller Bought Out By Rymes Propane & Oil: Different Name – Same Faces

Tom Rymes, owner of Rymes Propane and Oil. The company recently completed a buyout of Fred Fuller Oil.

FOR SALE - 90 Acres / New Hampton This 90 acres is legacy land... It’s land that will add to your heritage – a place you and your family can enjoy for generations to come. It’s a place where you can make your dreams come true. You’ve worked hard, now’s the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

It’s the day of New Hampshire’s first big snowstorm and Thanksgiving eve but Fred Fuller customers have more than just a big dinner and Black Friday specials to be happy about. Employees at Rymes are working around the clock to make the change-over from Fred Fuller to Rymes Propane and Oil. Late last night the buyout was approved and just hours ago two trucks filled up the tanks and today the delivery trucks are rolling out to customers to deliver oil and propane. Talking with Tom Rymes he wanted people to know “it is the same faces at all locations and you will be helped by the same people that have always been there to help. This is a great

team, everyone knows their job and there is no need to change personnel. If there are any problems we have the redundancy of both sets of offices to help. Tom also added, this deal was very complicated, and simply could not have happened without the direct and active involvement of Senators Shaheen and Ayotte, Governor Hassan, the U.S. Attorney John Kacavas, NH Attorney General Joe Foster, and Senior Assistant Attorney General Peter Roth, Jeff Varsalone, Bill Gannon, our legal team at Sheehan, Phinney, Bass and Green, as well as many, many others.

The good news is that it’s not that hard to clean paintbrushes, roller covers and other tools. working with water-based paint, which is cleaned up using water. Oil-based paints require paint thinner, mineral spirits or some other solvent. Cleaning a paintbrush starts before you dip it in the paint can. I discovered years ago that if I’m working with a water-based paint, my cleaning job is so much easier if I dip the brush in water and shake it out before I first dip it in paint. The water gets the bristles wet up inside the heel of the brush where the bristles are covered by the metal ferrule. This stored water keeps the paint from drying deep inside the brush as you use it. So long as you keep the brush wet with paint as you use it, and then clean it immediately after use, the paint deep inside the brush bristles stays in the liquid state. The biggest mistake I see most people make when cleaning brushes is pointing them upside down under a sink faucet. This is the fastest way to ruin a brush. Never ever do this.

I try to get out as much of the paint as possible by stroking the brush on old cardboard or rubbing the bristles with old paper towels, clothes dryer softener sheets, or any other thing that will remove the paint from the bristles. Don’t put excessive pressure on the brush trying to bend the bristles. This will also ruin the brush. I then fill a small bucket with warm water and a generous squirt of liquid dish soap. I take the brush and move it rapidly side to side in this solution as if I’m stirring the water with the brush. The brush never touches the bottom of the bucket. Within seconds the water becomes filled with paint from the brush. I discard this paint water into a five-gallon bucket of sand. The bottom of the bucket has holes punched in it so the water can eventually drain from the bucket. If you have a septic system at your house, never allow paint to get into your drain system. I then fill the small bucket with warm water and once again swish the

brush back and forth. As soon as the water turns cloudy from the paint, I dump it into the sandfilled bucket. I continue to do this rinsing until the water is clear after swishing. Usually it takes about two minutes to get to this point. The last step is to suspend the brush in warm water for 24 hours. I have a handy plastic paint pail that has a magnet near the top lip. The steel ferrule grabs onto the magnet and holds the brush perfectly vertical. I fill the pail so the water is just below the metal ferrule. Believe it or not, I often see more paint pigment and resin at the bottom of the pail after that long soak. I lay the brush flat on a piece of cardboard and allow it to dry naturally after taking it out of the pail. I do not shake it to remove excess water. I allow the bristles to stay tightly bound to one another from being soaked with water. As the brush dries flat, the bristles fluff out on their own. I then store the brush in the pro-

tective cardboard cover that came with it when the brush was new. Cleaning roller covers is easy. Use a semicircular tool to scrape as much paint as possible from the roller cover. You’d be stunned how much paint can be stored in a roller cover, sometimes up to four ounces in a 9-inch cover. I then use a magical hand-powered spinning tool that spins the roller at a high speed. When you get the roller wet with soapy water and crank the tool, the paint flies off the roller cover. I do this in an old 5-gallon bucket so the paint stays in the bucket. Repeated rinsing with clear water and subsequent spinning with the tool produces a clean roller cover in just minutes. The roller cover fibers may be stained the color of the paint, but don’t think that means it’s not clean. I also suspend the roller covers in clear water for 24 hours and, once again, paint you can’t seem to get out by spinning magically drifts out of the roller cover into the water.

Once the roller cover is clean, store it vertically on some cardboard until it’s dry. Don’t lay it flat to dry as that will compress the roller cover fibers. As for my oldest paintbrush, I’ve got a favorite 2-inch tapered brush that I use for painting woodwork that’s close to 20 years old. She’s a beauty, and the bristles are not floppy or worn out. are still being paraded as if they were simply eminent scholars seeking the truth. Maybe. But maybe not. Whether the issue is ObamaCare, amnesty for illegal immigrants or “global warming,” when you hear that “all the experts agree,” that may mean nothing more than that the fix is in. And “all” may mean considerably less than 100 percent -- or even 50 percent. No one can know for sure what motivated Pro-

come productive citizens! Another positive trend that seems to be bubbling up amid the chaos of negative political rhetoric is bipartisan support for early childhood education. The nearly unanimous support for the child care bill in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle along with the recognition by both parties of the importance preschool programs for all raises the hope for more collaborative efforts on other important issues in the future. Perhaps it is the little children who will bring our nation together. Cynthia Muse Rye, NH.

fessor Gruber to do what he did, or what motivated the media to stonewall as if he had never spilled the beans, or the liberal law professors to give Obama cover while he violated the Constitution. But running through all of their actions seems to be a vision of the world, and a vision of themselves, that is a continuing danger to the fundamental basis of this country, whatever the specific issue might be. Probably few people on the political left are opposed to the Constitu-

tion of the United States, much less actively plotting to undermine it. But, on issue after issue, what they want to do requires them to circumvent the three words with which the Constitution begins: “We, the people...” Many on the left may want to help “the people.” But once you start from the premise that you know what is best for the people, better than they know themselves, you have to figure ways around a Constitution based on the idea that the people not

chael Brown was not an innocent ‘gentle giant’ simply walking down the street and minding his own business. He had just committed a strong armed robbery in which he stole cigars and attacked the store manager. Toxicology reports also indicate that he was high on marijuana and THC. In fact, the levels of THC in his 6’5”, 289 lb body was twice the legal limit to be cited for a DUI in Washington State, where marijuana is legal. In a body his size, that would surely take an awful lot to reach those levels. All of that is said as a backdrop to this story. only have a right to choose their government and control government policy with their votes, but also that there are vast areas of the people’s lives that are none of the government’s business. Jonathan Gruber’s notion that the people are “stupid” is not fundamentally different from what Barack Obama said to his fellow elite leftists in San Francisco, when he derided ordinary Americans as petty people who want to cling to their guns and their religion. We need to see through such arrogant elitists if we want to cling to our freedom. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. Nineteen year-old TK Hancock was a sophomore at the University of Memphis and a new father. He was shot, execution style, while sitting in his car outside of the library. Hancock was not shot as part of a violent altercation on his part and it was not gang related. He was murdered, shot several times in the head and neck, in cold blood, for his cell phone. It’s possible he was targeted because the girl he was dating was also seeing one of the people who ultimately killed him. His killers were not white. They were black, just like him.”

Beginning at 9am on December 11th with Opening Ceremonies, Patrick’s Pub & Eatery of Gilford will host their 6th Pub Mania, a 24-hour Barstool Challenge to benefit the WLNH Children’s Auction. Pub Mania has now raised a cumulative total of $562,000 in its first 5 years, 100% which is aimed at benefiting children and families in the greater Lakes Region area of NH. In addition to the money raised, the Pub Mania event delivered over 4,500 food items to the food pantry at St. Vincent de Paul. “The Children’s Auction is a truly amazing event that brings people to action on behalf of others” said organizer and Patrick’s co-owner Allan Beetle. “Pub Mania brings out that spirit. Our goal is to make an impact in our community and to have lots of people participate with us in that effort”.

Patrick’s Pub Mania Gears Up for 2014

(L to R) Sarah Camire, Brenda Ferland & Tony Felch of Team Café Déjà Vu (2013 Pub Mania Top Dollar Team); New Teams to Pub Mania 2014 include Lily’s Angels (Cynthia, Mike, Ed and Tim Flemming; Team MVSB Barstool Bankers (Holly Andrews); Team BPS (Keith McBey with son Thomas). Inspired by Laconia Athletic & Swim Club’s “Cycle Mania”, Patrick’s reserves bar stools to teams that commit to filling the stool with a different team member each hour of the event.

With 30 teams and 24 people per team, the event has 720 ‘Culinary Athletes’ participating. Each participant raises funds for their respective teams, with teams enjoying a healthy

competition for two coveted awards: Top Dollar Award and Outstanding Team Award. Three teams raised over $50,000 last year, including Laconia Country Club’s

19th Hole with Team Captain Lucy Jacobsen and Supreme Marine’s Dream Team with Team Captain Matt Resca. The Café Déjà Vu team, captained by Benda Ferland and Tony Felch, once again raised the most money of any single team this year with a total over $20,000. “We have an amazing team of committed people” said Ferland. “We know that this money will make a difference in our community. We have been working hard this year and hope to raise at least $1 more than last year!” “It’s the Team Captains of the 30 Pub Mania Teams that make this event what it is” said Beetle. “They build and inspire their team to action. They make it all happen.” For more information about the event, visit www. patrickspub.com/pubmania.php or email info@ patrickspub.com.
