COMPLIMENTARY

An Open Letter To Mitt Romney

Linda and Paul Erickson of Epsom with General and Pudgy. The Ericksons, who had already adopted Pudgy, came back to the New Hampshire Humane Society for General when they heard brendan smith Photo that the forlorn feline was missing his old canine companion.

Reunited For Christmas by Marylee Gorham

Executive Director, NH Humane Society

Pudgy and General enjoyed a quiet life and years of happy cohabitation with a human who loved them dearly. Sadly, their owner passed away, leaving these two friends alone in the world. They travelled to the Laconia based animal shelter on Meredith Center Road a little weary, depressed and in need of medical intervention while coping with the upheaval of their lives.

Animals form bonds of friendship as strong as any human, and they experience the emotional pain of loss – grieving the absence of beloved humans At the NH Humane Society, a shelter where all adoptable animals find safe harbor, care and comfort until adoption day, we shaved Pudgy’s matted coat and started him on medicated baths. General exhibited the most obvious stress, he wouldn’t eat, didn’t attend to grooming, pulled out his fur, and

cried constantly. In an effort to help General acclimate to shelter life, never an easy thing, it’s not the home you were used to, he was moved to our administrative offices where he could enjoy a window seat, daily grooming and pick from a veritable smorgasbord of feline foods. Meanwhile Pudgy faired a little better. His coat began to grow back, he participated in our Pet Therapy program visiting area nursing See reunited on 18

It is no secret that you are a favorite in Republican circles for another run for president. This certainly isn’t a surprise to me. I knew, as did millions of other Americans, that you were our best hope in stopping President Obama’s dangerous agenda for a second term. Sitting presidents are rarely defeated and President Obama was no exception. So now, here we all are, hoping to make it through the last two years of his term. With a still very shaky economy and the increasing shadow of government over our day to day lives, polls have shown that many voters from 2012 now have buyer’s remorse and would vote differently if that same election were held today. This has been clearly demonstrated by the overwhelming Republican victories in the house and senate and across the country in the midterm elections. The presidential election of 2016 seems far away but will be here before we know it. The field of potential candidates is crowded with many good men and women who I am sure are strong in their commitment to bring back America. Early polls show that you are finishing in a strong first place among Republican voters indicating that you are still considered by many to be the best person for the job. Of course, I could never even pretend to understand the pressure and strain that your last campaign put on you and your family but I can understand what a commitment to run again would mean for you and them. I see your close family ties, something that is, unfortunately, rarer and rarer in America these days, and I know that any decision you make would depend strongly on their blessing. It is a decision of great magnitude to both family and country. That is why I am asking you, Mitt, not to dismiss the notion of running for president again. I knew, after meeting See romney on 22

A bloodied Y.A. Tittle after being sacked in the end zone in a 1964 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Giants made the NFL title game in 1961 and 1962, losing to the Packers both years. In 1963 Tittle threw for 36 touchdowns (in 14 games) but New York lost to the Chicago Bears, 14-10 in the championship game. Those Sunday afternoon memories will never fade away. Now the Patriots own New England, and countless New Hampshire youngsters now have their own lasting Sunday afternoon memories--watching a team that seldom disappoints. However, there’s a difference between the Tittle-era

GIANTS, PATRIOTS, AND MEMORIES I started watching sports as a six-year-old in (gulp) 1961. Every autumn Sunday at 1 p.m., my dad and I went to our “TV Room.” There we’d watch the New York football Giants on CBS-TV Channel 3, out of Burlington, Vt.—where the Giants had a preseason camp. The Giants always put on a show. Old-timers will remember the names. Y.A. Tittle. Frank Gifford. Andy Robustelli. Sam Huff. On and on. The games were in “blackand-white” as opposed to color, of course. But I can still hear TV play-by-play broadcaster Chris Schenkel’s voice. “TOUCHDOWN, New York!” I recall Tittle throwing for seven TD passes against the Washington Redskins in 1962. What fun it was to watch Alex Webster, Rosey Grier, Erich Barnes and company. The fledging Patriots weren’t taken seriously in those days. The Giants owned New England

Budget Deal To the Editor: Washington Democrats and Republicans just passed a budget that rewards the special interests at the expense of the American people. Senators Ayotte and Shaheen and Congresswoman Kuster voted for the special interests. Congresswoman Shea-Porter voted for the people over the special interests. The budget was created by the political party establishments, including President Obama, Speaker Boehner, and Majority Leader Reid, and special interest groups. The 1600 plus page document is heavy with pork, favors for supporters, and support for wasteful, ineffective, and unpopular programs. In an unbelievable act of betrayal of the American people, this budget puts taxpayers back on the hook for potentially trillions of dollars of losses incurred by the big banks. Congress repealed the Dodd-Frank provision that prevented banks from gambling with taxpayer insured money, a factor in the 2008 financial meltdown. This budget deal denied the recently elected Senators and Congressmen the opportunity to start fixing the problems, created by current and previous Congresses, that the voters sent them to address. Among other things the budget deal fully funds

Our Story

Obamacare (through September), funds President Obama’s amnesty for illegal aliens (through February), increases the power of political parties over the people, overrides Washington DC voters related to marijuana, bails-out Blue Cross Blue Shield, provides corporate welfare via OPIC, it freezes VicePresident Biden’s salary, forces the Postal Service to deliver mail on Saturday, demands that nutrition assistance programs include white potatoes (everyone knows how essential they are!), it blocks a rule that truckers get more sleep before driving, blocks funding for sprucing up UN buildings (a token for the people), provides money for livestock killed by wolves, approves increased NSA spying on Americans, etc. One would think that some of these things could have been handled normally by Congress rather than crammed into this last-minute bill in the middle of the night. One wonders how many more items, important or trivial, good or bad, were slipped into this bill that not a single Senator or Congressman read before voting? About 40% of the Republicans (led by the TEA Party members, showing why they are attacked by the party establishments) and about 40% of the Democrats voted for the people, not the special interests.

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

BTW, the Washington Post says the politicians supporting this pro-special interest bill received, on average, twice the amount of donations from the finance/insurance/real estate industries as the politicians opposing it (www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/thefix/wp/2014/12/12/ democrats-who-votedf o r - t h e - s pe n di n g- bi l l have-received-twice-asmuch-money-from-thefinance-industry-asthe-no-voters/). The passage of this budget deal is further proof that the majority of the Washington politicians o f bo t h po l i t i c a l pa r ties don’t care what the people want or what’s best for the vast majority of Americans if those things are contrary to special interests wants. Don Ewing Meredith, NH.

More Profitable To Sit At Home To The Editor: The Cato Institute has released an updated 2013 study showing that welfare benefits pay more than a minimum wage job in 33 states and the District of Columbia. Yet, even worse, welfare pays more than $15 per hour in 13 states. The study showed, welfare benefits have increased faster than minimum wage! Yup, it is now more profitable See mail boat on 21

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Two Tales

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It has been hard to figure out what to write for this week’s column. This paper will hit the streets on Tuesday in some places and as late as Friday in others. So, some of you may have picked up this paper just as the freshness of the anticipation of Christmas Day is growing to a fever pitch while others will be picking it up a day or two after the event is over, hung over from all the festivities and facing the aftermath. So, in fairness to all of my readers, I will write this column with a before and after approach. If you are picking it up on Tuesday or Wednesday, you can read the regular text. If you are a Friday or later in the weekend reader, you are to read the italicized version. I love the few days before Christmas. The tree all decorated. Lovingly cared for, keeping it replenished with new water every day and pine needles cleaned up. All is worth it as family and friends gather about, the lights and tinsel sparkling and the soft sounds of Christmas Carols in the background. The Christmas tree, lovingly cared for over the past couple of weeks to keep it looking great for the big day, will now be left on its own, begging for thirst and a little attention as it awaits its fate. Carrying it outside,

cursing the pine needles that are now everywhere from the living room, to the den and the kitchen. You finally get it outside. Maybe tossed into the woods in your backyard or heaved onto a pile at the brush dump, the harsh noise of wood chippers taking care of business.

wrapping paper alone. Will you please take care of it while I am at the store? I’ve got to return Johnny’s sweater, it’s the wrong size and Aunt Clara told me she’s already got a set of those cocktail glasses. I’ve got to exchange them or we will never get her out of here.

Family members, some of who you haven’t seen in a year, arrive at your house, arms full of presents. You welcome them with an open heart as well as with a fantastic Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meal you have been preparing for weeks. The guest rooms have been tidied with fresh sheets and scented candles. Everyone arrives safely and it is a wonderful Christmas experience. Okay, so when in the heck is Aunt Clara going to finally leave? It’s now the 27th of December and there is no sign of her going anywhere. There are only so many more meals I can make out of the few leftovers we have and we will soon be going to the peanut butter. Have you seen her room? She really is a slob and that scented candle certainly can’t keep up. By the way, your cousin Sherman called. He’s stuck on the Interstate with a flat tire and he wants you to go and pick him up.

There’s a knock on the door and you go to answer it with great expectation. Of course, it’s the neighborhood carolers. You gather the family around to hear them sing “Silent Night”. You invite them in for a cup of hot cocoa and some good cheer. Mister White is at the door. He’s pretty u[set. It seems Rover ripped apart his garbage and there is shredded wrapping paper all over his yard. I told you to get rid of that yesterday, but do you listen? Please take care of it. Whatever you do, don’t invite him in for coffee, he gives me the creeps.

Yes, it is a lot of work to wrap all of those gifts, but they look so good under the tree and it really is worth it as you watch everyone, young and old alike, as they unwrap the gifts that you also spent so much time shopping for. Trying to find that perfect present for each and everyone. Yeah, I know there’s a lot of garbage. Four of those bags are full of

You have to admit that the stores, filled with last minute shoppers, really give you a great feeling. All the decorations, the Christmas music playing and everyone really in a festive mood. You wouldn’t believe the store, it was a madhouse. It seemed like everyone was in there returning something and was trying to be first. Talk about rude, And, can you believe it? They are already putting out the Valentine’s Day stuff. I guess I might have the same problem next week with the New Year’s column. We’ll see. Merry Christmas or Happy New Year!!

Jeb Bush: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Waterboy Allow me to unite America’s left, right and center in just three words: No, Jeb, No. Former GOP Florida governor Jeb Bush by Michelle Malkin made the obSyndicated Columnist vious official this week when he announced on Facebook that he’s “actively exploring” a 2016 White House run. Of course, he’s running. That’s what inveterate politicians do. Well, I hate to break it to Jeb Inc. There’s no popular groundswell for Bush Part III. None, zip, nada. Independents, progressives and conservatives are all weary of the entrenched bipartisan dynasties that rule Washington and ruin America. Only in the hallowed bubble of D.C. and New York City elites does a Jeb Bush presidential bid make any sense. Jeb’s indulgent (and ultimately doomed) enterprise has three privileged constituencies: Big Business, Big Government and Big Media. This iron triumvirate explains how the failed campaigns of so-called “pragmatic,” “thoughtful” and “moooooderate” liberal Republican candidates such as John McCain, Jon Huntsman and Bob Dole ever got off the ground. The “Reasonable Republican,” anointed and enabled by the statist Big Three, serves as a useful tool for bashing conservatives and marginalizing conservatism. For Republicans who argue that Jeb is the most “electable” choice, I ask: What planet are you on? After two disastrous terms of Barack Obama’s Hope and Change Theater, the last thing the Republican Party needs is an establishment poster child for Washington busi-

ness as usual. I mean, really? A third Bush who’s been working for his dad, his dad’s friends or the government since 1980? A Beltway-ensconced scion so chummy with the Clinton family that he awarded close family friend -- and potential 2016 nemesis -Hillary a “Liberty Medal” last year as chairman of the National Constitution Center? That’s the GOP donor bigwigs’ “fresh idea” for “American Renewal?” To blunt criticism from the grassroots base on the right, Jeb’s cheerleaders at the Wall Street Journal cite his “conservative” gubernatorial record of cutting taxes and privatizing jobs. So we’re supposed to swoon when a GOP governor acts like he’s supposed to act on standard, bread-and-butter GOP issues? Whoop-de-doo. One thing Jeb’s promoters won’t be emphasizing: Over the course of his eight years in the Florida governor’s mansion, government spending skyrocketed. The libertarian Cato Institute notes that Florida general fund spending “increased from $18.0 billion to $28.2 billion during those eight years, or 57 percent” and that “(t) otal state spending increased from $45.6 billion to $66.1 billion, or 45 percent.” Like big-spending father, like big-spending big brother, like big-spending second son and lil’ brother. I have another interpretation of Bush’s “conservative” Florida years: It’s called biding his time. Yes, Jeb put in his obligatorily GOP service on taxes and the Second Amendment. Christmas 1776 – Christmas 2014 In December 1776, the upstart colonies who engaged Mother England in a war for independence were facing defeat. British and Hessian troops were overtaking the colonial militias and Gen. George Washington knew well time was short. Enlistment of many in the militias were due to expire by the end of the month. The cold, hungry, and tired men were looking forward to returning home to their loved ones. But, Providence had provided America with a Founding Father who was fearless and stalwart. The trajectory of the American Revolution was about to change. On the evening of Dec. 25, 1776, Washington led his troops across an ice laden Delaware River, and attacked the Hessian army in the Battle of Trenton.

Believing the Hessians would be making merry on Christmas, Washington attacked in what was to be one of the worst winters on record. In fact, many in the militia marched without shoes through the snow and ice, some succumbing to frostbite and death from the exposure. With the victory in this battle, the colonies now had HOPE that the revolution could deliver them the freedom they so ardently desired. Other battles were engaged with confidence rather than dread. The Battle of Trenton helped deliver support from other countries such as France and Spain. The British were put on notice the American colonies were not only willing, but able to defend their right to freedom. Fast forward to 2014. There are many who believe we are living under tyranny today. There are many who believe our government no longer listens to its citizenry. It is at this time See cormier on 26

The Year of Living Stupidly Humorist Will Durst d u b b e d 2012 the “Year of Living Stupidly.” His s n a r k y play on the “Year of Livby Ken Gorrell ing DangerNorthfield, NH. ously,” the name given to the year 1965 by General Sukarno of Indonesia for his annual “National Day” speech, was, I think, 3 years premature. As we approach the fiftieth anniversary of that “dangerous” year, I believe that 2015 will be a better candidate for the label “Year of Living Stupidly,” at least for NH’s Republicans. After securing the legislature in November, our Republicans soured the milk by allowing a

man with an unimpressive caucus voting record to be elected Speaker, thanks to the votes of all minority Democrats. The Jasper joke (“How many Republicans does it take to screw up a vote for Speaker?”) provided the perfect punchline to an election in which princess-and-the-pea Republicans (whose delicate sensibilities can tolerate no imagined imperfections) joined with Democrats to reelect liberal partisans like Hassan and Shaheen. Shawn Jasper’s recent Union Leader op-ed promoted the unicorn idea of “New Hampshire solutions” replacing partybased solutions, as if legislation were immaculately conceived. This from a man who owes his position to the entire minority caucus and a minority of the majority caucus. Most of Jasper’s “team” helped increase our state’s debt when

Cuban Thaw But Castro Brothers Still Rule UNITED NATIONS--One of the last legacies of the Cold War has ended with Washington reestablishing diplomatic ties with Cuba afby John J. Metzler ter a fifty-three Syndicated Columnist year break in relations. Yet another enduring legacy of that era continues; the unchallenged rule by the Castro family dictatorship, which has outlasted eleven American presidents, won the waiting game, and still controls the Caribbean island state. Just weeks ago while visiting the JFK Presidential Museum in Boston and viewing the Kennedy era of which the confrontation with communist Cuba played a central part, I wondered if and when the Obama Administration would rationalize a change in ties with Cuba under the hubristic banner of “smart diplomacy.” Well it has. Barack Obama’s move to normalize relations and change what the president called an “outdated approach” to the diplomatic di-

lemma very much echoes Jimmy Carter’s diplomatic opening to China. In December 1978 when Congress was out of session for the Christmas break, President Carter announced a seismic shift in U.S policy by opening American diplomatic ties to the People’s Republic of China, the world’s largest dictatorship. The surprise break with Taiwan cased a bi-partisan political backlash to Carter’s move with criticism from both sides of the aisle in Congress. According to Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), “These changes will lead to legitimacy for a government that shamelessly abuses human rights but it will not lead to assistance for those whose rights are being abused.” Senator Rubio, himself a Cuban-American added, “It’s absurd and it’s part of a long record of coddling dictators and tyrants.” Senator Bob Melendez (D-NJ) added, “President Obama’s actions have vindicated the brutal behavior of the Cuban government… trading Mr. Gross for three convicted criminals sets an extremely dangerous precedent. they were in the majority, and blithely expanded Medicaid in lock-step with ObamaCare, adding NH to the roll of “loser states.” Medicaid spending will soon crowd out the nice-tohaves, such as infrastructure, education, and social services. Was that national Democrat agenda a New Hampshire solution? ObamaCare and Medicaid ex-

pansion (a program that produces worse medical outcomes than having no government medical welfare program at all) demonstrates just how ideologicallydriven real politics is. Jasper can try to convince us that he can operate above such trifles, but the Democrats have shown us just how far they’ll go to win in the political real world. See gorrell on 28

Tortured Reasoning Critics and defenders of the harsh interrogation methods applied to captured terrorists can argue forever over whether those methods were by Thomas Sowell “torture.” But Syndicated Columnist any serious discussion of a serious issue -- and surely terrorism qualifies as serious -- has to move beyond semantics and confront the ultimate question: “Compared to what alternative?” If you knew that there was a hidden nuclear time bomb planted somewhere in New York City -set to go off today -- and you had a captured terrorist who knew where and when, would you not do anything whatever to make him tell you where and when? Would you pause to look up the definition of “torture”? Would you even care what the definition of “torture” was, when the alternative was seeing millions of innocent people murdered? Senator Dianne Feinstein’s recent release of a massive report on the CIA’s severe interrogation methods, used against captured Islamic terrorists, has set off a firestorm of controversy. It is hard to see what benefit the United States of America gains from releasing that report. But it is painfully obvious what lasting damage has been done to the security of Americans. One of the most obscene acts of the Obama administration, when it first took office, was to launch a criminal investigation of

CIA agents who had used harsh interrogation methods against captured terrorists in the wake of the devastating September 11, 2001 aerial attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Right after those terrorist attacks, when there were desperate fears of what might be coming next, these CIA agents were trying to spare fellow Americans another attack that could take thousands more lives, or perhaps millions more. To turn on these agents, years later, after they did what they were urged to do, as a patriotic duty in a time of crisis, is both a betrayal of those who acted in the past and a disincentive to those in the future who are charged with safeguarding the nation. Other nations, whose cooperation we need, in order to disrupt international terrorist networks, see how their involvement has now been revealed to the whole world -- including terrorists -because supposedly responsible American officials, in the Congress of the United States, cannot keep their mouths shut. The public’s “right to know” has often been invoked to justify publicizing confidential information. But is there any evidence that the American public was clamoring to learn state secrets, which every government has? I don’t know where our nuclear weapons are located and I don’t want to know, certainly not at the cost of letting our enemies know. The ease with which politicians are willing to pull the rug out from under people whose job is to safeguard our lives -- whether See Sowell on 21

Dedicated caregivers often suffer the most when constant attention is required. They are at increased risk of depression and other health problems caused by the stress of care giving and require periodic breaks to revitalize and recharge themselves.

Helping Hands Program Short-term respite care provides a safe and secure temporary home to residents whose family caregivers have unexpected emergencies, have work or travel plans or just need a short break from the hard work and dedication involved in being a primary caregiver. When such needs arise, we are here to offer the same loving care to a family member that they normally receive at home. A short-term stay can also benefit a person recuperating from an illness or injury who needs to be brought to a level of independence necessary to return home.

Eight Steps to End Night Time Eating

If you are having trouble giving up those late night snacks consider these recommendations written by respected Dr. & Author, Mark Hyman MD by Dr. Charles Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

1. Eat breakfast. This is the key strategy to stop the nighttime cravings. Of course, if you are binging at night, you probably won’t want to eat breakfast, because when you wake up, you’re still full. So, you have to break that cycle, and you have to start with breakfast, a good, protein breakfast. There are two that I love, which I use all the time. One is eggs, any form you like: omelet, fried, poached. Eggs are a great source of protein that helps balance your blood sugar. Eat WHOLE eggs, not egg whites. The second is a whole food protein shake. I make it very simply. I keep all the ingredients I need in my cupboard, so it’s goof proof, and I don’t have to think about it. It’s all there. I put in hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, almond butter, coconut butter, frozen cranberries, frozen wild blueberries, and a little unsweetened almond or hemp milk. I put it all in the blender, and it’s fan-

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina

Dear children! In a special way, today I am calling you to prayer. Pray, little children, so that you may comprehend who you are and where you need to go. Be carriers of the good news and be people of hope. Be love for all those who are without love. Little children, you will be everything and will achieve everything only if you pray and are open to God’s will - to God who desires to lead you towards eternal life. I am with you and intercede for you from day to day before my Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call. Our Blessed Mother has been giving a Message to the World every 25th day of the month since June 1981.

tastic. If you have one of those for breakfast, it’ll keep your blood sugar even all morning and all day. 2. Don’t drink your calories. If you have sugary, liquid calories in the form of sodas, juices, lattes, sports drinks, or iced teas, it will spike your insulin and blood sugar, and this will cause cravings. 3. Make sure you eat regularly. Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you want a snack in between, that’s fine. But make sure you eat at regular rhythms and regular times. Your body is a hormonal clock, and you have to eat in rhythm to keep it in balance. 4. Have protein and good-quality fat at every meal, whether it’s good fats like nuts and seeds, avocados, coconut, olive oil, or quality protein like chicken, fish, or grass-fed meat. Some combination of these, plus lots of vegetables balance your blood sugar. 5. Find your pause button and soothe the stress. Stress makes you fat (and overeat); relaxing makes you thin. So, learn to find your pause button and de-stress. I encourage you to look at my blog

on finding your pause button to learn exactly what to do. Breathing, yoga, and exercise are some of my favorite ways to reduce stress, which helps reset the hormones, balance brain chemistry, and stop the cravings. 6. Prioritize Sleep. If you don’t sleep, you will be hungry, especially for carbs and sugar. Why? Because when you deprive yourself of sleep, ghrelin, the hormone that drives hunger goes up and PYY, the hormone that makes you feel full goes down. So, if you want to lose weight, sleep it off. 7. Find Your Food Sensitivities. People don’t realize this, but you often crave the thing you’re allergic or sensitive to. And gluten and dairy are among the biggest triggers for food sensitivity. So, try to get rid of these for a few weeks and see if your cravings stop. 8. Supplement to Cut Cravings. Balance your blood sugar and your insulin and help stop the cravings. 1.Omega-¬3 fats, especially fish oil—a couple of capsules a day can really help. 2.Vitamin D also helps See fink on 22

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

As I sat spinning my wheels, knee deep in Christmas tasks (you know the list: did I get this done, I still have to do that, etc), I took a moment to pause and listen to a bit of great wisdom: How The Grinch Stole Christmas. My wife was reading it to our three kids. She’s always reading to them, she’s a good mom. The book and the classic movie (the animated version from 1966, not the creepy live action version from 2000), tell a story most of us know. Yet, as an adult, I’ve actually begun to find the story more humorous and more wise than I did as a child. As she read, this is the line that hit me: “maybe Christmas”, he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas…perhaps… means a little bit more.”

Isn’t that the truth? As we spend the holidays shopping, baking, and to do list making, we are actually missing the point. Perhaps that is why the holidays are such a source of stress for so many people. The holiday season (if you believe commercials, wait you don’t?) is supposedly a perfect time of year and none of us are supposed to be stressed, or lonely, or unhappy, or any other “un-jolly” feeling. The fact is, we know this isn’t true. Many people are experiencing these feelings, maybe all of them. It’s not surprising. Most people are stretched thin financially, time wise, and nutritionally anyway, but the holidays tend to magnify all of those. That’s why the Grinch was so right. If we realize that Christmas means a little bit more, perhaps we can break free from all the extraneous stuff that drags us down and get back to joy. Here’s the game plan: 1) Set your holiday limits and stick to them. This is the big one. Set your budget, your calendar, your Christmas cookie quota and lock it down and learn the word “no”.

I’ve written on the power of “no” before. Use it. It feels good. I promise, it’s so easy once you try it. Take back your life. Via the power of “no”, you can avoid overspending, overbooking, and overeating at the holidays. Take a second and imagine a new reality free of those burdens. Pretty great, right? I know that it sounds simple, and that we don’t always think of simple things as being effective (“it can’t be that easy!”). Yet, it really is that basic. Think about it: you are already stressed and short on time and then someone asks if you can bake a few dozen cookies for a holiday event at your work/ school/church. You want to be a good, helpful person, and I think that you should be, too. But, if the task is going to push you over the edge it may not be a good idea, instead of saying a grumbling, unhappy yes, say no. On the flip side, if next year you decide to set some holiday boundaries of commitments and thus have extra time, you may well have the time to bake the last minute cookies. The point: taking on too much See moneysmith on 21

The Court does agree with the Defendant’s argument that, often in an official meeting or at the Court, for that matter, individuals, from time to time, may be disruptive but that disruptiveness should not be cause for an arrest in the first instance. The sequence of the arrest actions cause pause by the Court as to the chilling, if not silencing of a citizen by the State, for actions which do not warrant a criminal arrest nor conviction. [...] The Court finds the Defendant’s actions to be IMPOLITE but not CRIMINAL. The Court further finds that if the level of offensiveness of the Defendant’s actions were to sustain any one of these criminal allegations, the State would be authorized to limit a citizen’s free speech exercise such that it would be purely discretionary. I have watched the tape, and if impolite, is questioning the type of garbage that is a reading assignment, that is still strong language. Ask The Builder How To Replace A Broken Floor Tile

DEAR TIM: I’ve got numerous cracked ceramic floor tiles, and my wife wants them replaced. I’m very lucky in that the builder and previous owner left extra tile for just this reason, I suppose. Can you guide me through the entire process, including the grouting, so it looks like a pro did it? I’ll be forever indebted to you, and maybe my wife will bake you a pie. --Corey C., Sun Valley, California DEAR MARK: Hmm, a pie’s in this deal? I’m all over that. I realize it’s rude to put in a request, but I’m dying to have a succulent pecan pie. Let’s talk tile now. Removing and replacing a single ceramic floor tile is not too hard, depending on how it was installed. If your house is 100-plus years old and the tile was set in a mortar bed, it’s going to be like extracting a wisdom tooth from a 65-year-old man. If it’s a simple floor tile that was installed in a bathroom on cement board with organic mastic, it’s going to be a breeze. It’s all about how the tile was adhered to the substrate. The first thing I recom-

This ceramic floor tile has a big crack in it and is dangerous for bare feet. mend when removing a floor tile is to carefully remove all the grout around the tile. This can be done with a power tool or by hand. Perhaps the best power tool to do this is a newer vibrating multitool that’s equipped with a rounded carbide bit blade that’s no wider than 1/16 inch. Use goggles or safety glasses and great lighting, and be alert. Take your time so you do not nick or scratch the tiles adjacent to the cracked tile. If you’re going to do this by hand, you need to use a hammer and an older beatup flat-head screwdriver. You slowly and carefully chip away the grout. Doing it this way can be mind-

numbing. With the grout out of the way, there’s now less chance that you’ll damage any adjacent tile during the removal process. If the tile you want to remove is touching up against any other tiles in the floor, the initial stress of removing the tile pieces can put pressure against the adjacent tiles and possibly crack or chip them. If the floor tile is not touching up against any other tile, you can tap the tile with a dull masonry chisel near a corner and start to crack off small pieces about the size of a dime. After you crack a piece off, do whatever is

necessary to get the piece up from the floor. Once all the tile is out, now you have to excavate the thinset mortar or organic adhesive that was used to adhere the tile to the floor. You can do this by hand or with a power tool. The vibrating multitool with a flatter carbide bit or tip will help you do this. If you have to do it by hand, you might discover that a stiff 1 1/2-inch putty knife held at a low angle does a great job. Once you think you have all the thinset or organic mastic out of the way, test it and see. Drop a replacement tile in place of the cracked one and use a straightedge over the tile to see if you have at least 1/8 inch of space between the entire top of the tile and the bottom of the straight edge. You want the straightedge to be resting on the adja-

cent tiles on all sides of the replacement tile to check for the air space. Rotate the straightedge at least 90 degrees to check for the needed gap. I’d recommend using cement-based thinset to adhere the tile to the floor. It doesn’t give after it’s dry, as organic mastic does, and it will help to prevent future cracks. Be sure the substrate is free of all dust and loose material. You can buy small notched hand tools to help put down the correct amount of thinset. The size of the notches depends on the size of the tile you’re installing. Go to a store that sells just tile, and the manager there will make sure you have the correct tool. When you set the tile in the new thinset, you need to make sure the entire tile is contacting the thinset and there are no gaps. This

may mean you have to put the thinset on different thicknesses if the substrate is not in the same plane as the top surface of the finished tile floor. Gently drop the new tile onto the fresh thinset and lightly tap in place so its top surface is flush with all the adjacent tiles. Use the straightedge again to help you here. Allow the tile to set and cure for at least 48 hours before grouting it. Protect it so no one walks on it. You need to match the grout color perfectly. To do this, the existing floor grout needs to be clean. The best grout cleaner I’ve discovered is powdered oxygen bleach. You mix it with water, stir, allow the powder to dissolve and then pour it on the grout. After 30 minutes scrub, rinse and allow to dry to see the new clean grout. The grout must be dry so you can match it to the color cards if it’s a col-

ored grout. When grouting, do not add too much water to the new grout. You want it the consistency of cake batter. When striking the joints, do not use a dripping sponge. Squeeze all the water out of the sponge when dressing the grout joint. Don’t worry about sending any whipped cream with the pecan pie. I can get that on my own. I’d love to see before and after photos of your job ... and one of the smile on your wife’s face when she sees your expert installation! Want free home-improvement information? Blue Jays Love House Paint! by Steve White Contributing Writer

Every now and then, we receive reports from our customers that tend to boggle the mind. In these instances, we rely on established authorities of the wild bird world to assist us in aiding our clients with their predicaments. We believe the Cornell Lab of Ornithology of New York to be the foremost experts on wild birds and bird behavior. The Lab’s library of authentic bird sounds is unparalleled in the ornithological world. The slides we use for our presentations at schools and local civic organizations are from the Cornell Lab. Project Feeder Watch and Classroom Feeder Watch are just two of over a dozen different citizen scientist undertakings that the Cornell Lab have managed into international success stories. A few years back, we were getting complaints from our customers about blue jays pecking at their houses. Some people reported that they witnessed these birds actually eating paint chips. These reports became more prevalent during the early spring seasons. During the mating seasons that occur each postwinter, it is not uncommon to hear that birds are pecking on homes, telephone poles and hollow trees. These are usually due to the announcing of mating territories by dominant males. These examples provide excellent drums that other birds can hear from miles away. The unmistakable sounds are irresistible to females and can be used as warning

signs to competing males. However, we had never heard of blue jays consuming paint and so we embarked on a journey into the interesting world of strange backyard bird behaviors. It turns out that this pattern was occurring quite regularly in the Northeast, with New Hampshire leading the way in terms of complaints. Blue jays were indeed taking the paint off certain homes and eating the paint chips. What would be the reason for such unusually conduct? Our contacts in the Cornell Lab informed us that similar stories were reaching their scientists and they had concluded that the birds were simply attempting to obtain calcium for their diet. A quick call to various paint manufacturers revealed that their products use limestone as a key ingredient, which is an excellent source of calcium. Birds had discovered this and were taking advantage of this free, easy source of a vital nutrient. Scientists theorize that the blue jays, especially in the Northeast, may store calcium before the spring breeding season due to the fact that naturally occurring calcium may be in short supply. Calcium is crucial for egg laying. These homeowners soon discovered that if they offered crushed egg shells on simple trays, that the blue jays left their homes untouched. If you do not consume eggs in your household, consider asking your local restaurant if they would save all the egg shells each day for your use. If you explain your situation and provide them with a simple container, they may honor your wishes. Depending on

the number of blue jays, it may take more than a few eggs to placate them until nesting season begins. Offering crushed egg shells in your regular seed mixes is another example of making your backyard bird feeders irresistible to a wide variety of song birds each spring and summer. Enjoy your birds! But in quiet moments he could be seen sitting outside in the sun, wistfully watching the driveway, as if awaiting the reappearance of his owner who would never come. We showcased Pudgy as pet of the week in September, hoping someone would look past his advancing years and see a sweet and gentle dog, with much love to give, who truly deserved a second chance. Linda and Paul Erickson of Epsom, New Hampshire, thought it about time to have another canine since five years had elapsed since the passing of their own dog. Though their house is populated with elder animals, they felt ready to open their hearts and home to a dog in need. Paul and Linda began their search, starting in the Manchester area and driving north to our shelter in Laconia where they saw Pudgy for the first time. Just one look is all it took for this wonderful retired couple to fall in love. Didn’t matter one bit he was an ‘old soldier’, in fact, that was their preference. Time went by, Pudgy

General was reunited with Pudgy under the watchful eyes of all at NHHS last week. As if no time and passed, and they had not been separated for months, General walked right up to his dog friend, winked ‘hello’ and nuzzled the wizened chin of the black dog he knew as his companion. Pudgy raised his head and smiled broadly, his tail wafting gently back and forth. There wasn’t a dry eye in the shelter that afternoon. Paul and Linda took General home – reunited with his canine companion, happy to have a new family to love and care for him. General we are told, has commandeered Linda’s side of the bed. He sleeps with his new humans every night. Pudgy with renewed vigor has made friends with two other older dogs in the neighborhood, and on brisk winter mornings can be found cavorting with his newfound canine companions. Pudgy and General will enjoy a warm, safe, cozy Christmas with humans who are pledged to care for them forever. Our thanks to the Erickson’s cannot be fully put into words. But the purrs and barks of joy from General and Pudgy really say it all. Merry Christmas.

with you in your first editorial board review you gave at the Weirs Times office after announcing your candidacy in 2011, that you genuinely wanted to help the country; that you weren’t in it for the power, prestige and money. Your expertise as a successful businessman, your understanding of economics and your administrative skills as Governor of Massachusetts and savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics, proved your capability for the highest office in the land. This upcoming election we will elect a president who will have one of two directions to go: continue on the frightening path we are on now or take the reins and lead us out of the wilderness and back to American Exceptionalism. Whoever gets the job, I hope they will choose the latter path. It won’t be easy, but we will need a person of experience and willpower. You would definitely be at the top of that list. As you know, getting there is never easy. The hills and valleys of a campaign are filled with detours and muddy roads. But you have been there. You have introduced yourself to the people and they have responded. Thousands of loyal, dedicated volunteers across the country would urge you to run again. You have the experience and the resources needed to build a path to a successful presidential campaign, I know there is so much to consider. Not many of us would want to make that journey twice, never mind three times. It has only been done by a few. Most recently Ronald Reagan, who, coincidentally, was your age when he was elected president in his third try. Whatever you and your family decide, you have my utmost respect. It will ultimately be an extremely tough decision to make. I hope that you will give it the careful consideration that it deserves. Sincerely, Bob Lawton Founder and Publisher of The Weirs Times and Cocheco Times bob@weirs.com

But since Brady era began in 2001, the Patriots have had nothing but winning seasons—including five Super Bowl trips. Earlier this month they clinched yet another AFC East title. Fourteen years of unprecedented gridiron success have cemented Pats imagery into the minds of countless youngsters. A half century from now they’ll call up vivid memories of a Patriot Golden Age—just as I have my Giant memo-

In my “TV room. And I’ll be mentally thanking Coach Bill Belichick and Company for the memories, while pondering how sad it must be for generations of football youngsters to grow up in places like Detroit. Go Pats! MORE ON CHARLIE COMISKEY I owe a “Thank you to loyal reader Bill Lamb of Meredith, who took me to task for my comments regarding the supposedly penurious Chicago White Sox owner Charlie Comiskey (Sport-Thoughts, Dec. 11). I pointed out that star ChiSox slugger Shoeless Joe Jackson made only $6000 in 1919, and the conventional wisdom was

that the team threw the World Series that year because Comiskey didn’t pay them what they deserved. Bill writes that “Comiskey was a relatively generous owner who paid his players the going salary rate, and then some. He sent documentation that the ChiSox had the second highest player payroll in baseball for 1919. Apparently the portrayal of Comiskey as a tightwad owner was a stratagem devised by Black Sox defense lawyers at the 1921 criminal trial. Who knew? Well, now YOU know “the rest of the story. Still, there remain internet accounts of Comiskey forcing his players to launder their own uniforms. And the story lingers that Comiskey’s promised bonus for winning the 1919

metzler from 7

dictatorial and rogue regimes to use Americans serving overseas as bargaining chips.” Echoes of Jimmy Carter. With Congress out of session, Obama decided to make the Cuba move getting some concessions such as the release of American citizen Alan Gross in exchange for three Cuban agents held in the USA. For political cover, Barack Obama recounted how Pope Francis was instrumental in helping facilitate the political deal to renewed ties with Havana. At the UN, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warmly welcomed the reestablishment of relations between Washington and Havana. Rationalizing a chance to change the political and economic landscape in Cuba, the Obama diplomatic recognition in effect rewards one of the world’s most ossified dictatorships in which authoritarian political control has the trappings of one party rule, press censorship, banned trade unions, crackdowns on dissidents and secret police torture. Washington gained little apparent leverage from the deal. Yet after the loss of communist Cuba’s Soviet patrons in the 1990’s the island has seen its stag-

nant socialist economy deteriorate. Recent oil assistance from its comrade Venezuela has not stopped the downward slide. So, are the Castro brothers willing to court the long reviled USA? Yes and no. Still there’s a counterintuitive side to the equation. Since the USA has not toppled nor significantly changed the Castro rule since the 1960’s, would another style and strategy work? The Castro regime has long politically justified itself as a self-styled socialist David standing up to the Colossus of the North, the USA. When Washington opens diplomatic and eventually trade ties, we deflate and marginalize Castro’s central argument by removing the regime’s cherished Yanqui scapegoat. With focused diplomacy, we may even bring a whiff of political oxygen into a stale political debate. While Washington’s move to re-establish diplomatic relations is not necessarily an endorsement of the political regime (we recognize China and Venezuela for example), the separate economic embargo dating from the Kennedy Administration in 1962 remains the core issue. The embargo is the annual target of a General

Assembly resolution where the USA is massively out voted and condemned for maintaining the economic embargo, lifting the formal blockade needs Congressional approval. This is unlikely with the new Republican Congress. There’s already a quiet trade relationship with Cuba consisting of American agricultural exports to the Caribbean island; in 2013 the amount was $359 million. An American tourist influx to Cuba is expected as restrictions are being eased. Once again, Washington’s Cuba policy becomes a political lightning rod both with the CubanAmerican community in Florida but also across the USA as Presidential elections approach in 2016. Not surprisingly, political fallout from this decision may well impact on the next election. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. positions on his two defining national policy issues: Education and immigration. Jeb Bush’s agenda is neither left nor right. His agenda is the agenda of the D.C. headquarters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Remember: The chamber is a politically entrenched synod of bipartisan special interests. As I’ve said before, these fat cats do not represent the best interests of American entrepreneurs, American workers, American parents and students or Americans of any race, class or age who believe in low taxes and limited government. The chamber’s business is the big business of the Beltway, not the business of mainstream America. And so is Jeb Bush’s. The Chamber supports mass amnesty for cheap, illegal alien workers. Jeb Bush supports mass legalization of cheap, illegal alien workers and accuses those of us who oppose it on constitutional, sovereignty, security and fairness grounds of lacking “compassion.” The Chamber supports the top-down, privacy-undermining, local autonomy-sabotaging Common Core racket. Jeb Bush spearheaded and profited from Common Core -- and accuses those of us who oppose it of opposing academic excellence for our own children. Jeb’s problem isn’t just Common Core. It’s that he has no core. Instead of retreating from the costly federalized scheme that has alienated teachers, administrators and parents of all backgrounds, Bush has doubled down with his Fed Ed control freak allies and corporate donors. The reign of Obama ushered in massive cronyism, corporate favoritism and Boomtown boondoggles galore. We’ve lived too long already under the boot of arrogant D.C. bureaucrats who’ve exploited their power to serve their friends. No more business as usual: Stop Jeb Bush.

we need to remember The Battle of Trenton. We need to remember how these brave patriots risked everything on an “idea” that self-rule could become more than just a dream. I find it ironic that on December 25, the recognized date of the birth of Christ, the dream of America was set on its course toward Freedom. America was born out of a faith we rarely see today. A faith that Providence would guide us through an almost impossible quest. A faith that Natural Rights come from Him, not from the flawed human attempts of governance. Do we still have that strong faith today? I will leave that for you to decide. On December 25, 2014 my family and I will keep Christmas. We will celebrate with friends and family and, for one day, be at peace. But, we will also stop to recognize the bounty bestowed on us because of the sacrifice and faith of those who came before us. Our country is testimony to this fact. Let us hope 2015 will bring us a renewed faith in the power of the individual to work together, under Providence, toward a goal of returning America to our founding premise of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (not the GUARANTEE of such). Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” George Washington

Contra Jasper, ideology drives the process of creating and imposing laws. What elected officials believe and how they turn those beliefs into legislation matter. Bills are born of ideology, and support usually aligns with party affiliation. “Solution” is in the eye of the beholder. Those who believe otherwise are either naive or charlatans. As a conservative I believe that “NH solutions” must include the lowest possible tax burden that will generate the full amount of revenue needed to run state services. I believe that state services must be selected carefully from the huge list of wants to a tightlyconstructed list focused on maintaining civil order while protecting individual rights. I believe that government should not be in the business of shielding people from the consequences of their own a actions - always

the excuse for imposing liberty-crushing laws and bureaucratic regulations. I believe that the business-consumer relationship works best when government interferes the least. Given their sorry record, it’s clear that most of those who voted for Jasper as Speaker believe differently. Yet they have promoted their agenda as a “NH solution,” too. From health care and health insurance, to policies on energy, education, and the environment, an ideological divide separates us into fairly well-defined camps. Try as he might, the man who wrote that UL op-ed isn’t going to be able to bridge that gap. One side or the other will prevail. That’s why elections are supposed to matter. The ebb and flow of legislative majorities favored the Republicans in 2014, but we ended up with a Speaker of the House who chose to row

against the tide. Combine our state follies with what passes for Republican leadership in our nation’s capital, and 2015 may go down in history as the year of lost opportunities and the year the GOP set itself up to fail in 2016. (Jeb Bush formed a presidential exploratory committee? Really?). Despite the signals sent in the 2014 elections and the clear dangers of proceeding on our present course, GOP majorities at the state and national levels seem willing only to reduce the throttle. They don’t seem capable of changing the hand on the tiller. Next week we’ll celebrate ringing in the New Year, but 2015 is shaping up to be “The Year of Living Stupidly.” Ken can be reached at kengorrell@gmail.com.

Comedienne Paula Poundstone Brings Laughter to Plymouth At 7:30 on Saturday, January 3rd, The Flying Monkey is excited to welcome comedienne Paula Poundstone to its stage. Paula Poundstone is an Emmy Awardwinning comedian, author and humorist. She is currently a regular panelist on NPR’s widely popular weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me.” On stage, she is known for her razor sharp wit and spontaneity with crowds. Tickets start at $29. It is impossible to attend a Paula Poundstone performance without marveling at her ability to interact spontaneously with audience members in conversations bound to garner riotous laughter. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone, and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. Little wonder people leave Paula’s shows debating whether the

random people she talked to were “plants” -which, of course they never are -- and complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter. Her off-kilter sensibility and impeccable timing made her a perfect fit for NPR’s “oddly informative,” weekly news quiz program, “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me,” which she joined as a regular panelist seven years ago. Hosted by Peter Segal, the show is broadcast in 50 states and gives Poundstone a chance to match wits with some of today’s leading pundits - not to mention interact with some of the people at the forefront of our nation’s eyes, such as Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and former White House Press Secretary the late Tony Snow. “We love it when Paula comes to Plymouth,” says Seth McNally of The Flying Monkey. “The thing that has made her a legend among comics and fans is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd… it definitely separates her from the pack of comics working today.” Tickets for Paula Poundstone’s show are $29, and $39 for premiere seating. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www.flyingmonkeynh.com or call 603-5362551.
