WATER EDUCATION PARK The site of this project is located within Texas A & M University. White Creek which is part of the Navasota River System goes through this site. The design concept of this water education park is aiming to make people experience more about the watershed and drinking water system in this region.

INSTRUCTOR Changshan Huang

CONCEPT

1 Copy the existing tree pattern of the site.

2 Offset the pattern to create a trail system.

3 Combine the creek system with the pattern. Expand the central part to set a focus point.

4 Overlap the new pattern to the existing topography.

5 Define every zone with different functions.

MASTER PLAN Almost half of the land is required to be used for utility amenities. We divide the site into two parts, and set the residential and commercial area at the south part to be consistent with the Phase I of the Medical City.

WIND ANALYSIS

The Harmattan Wind in Nigeria brings sand and dust from the Sahara Desert during November to February every year. Also, the noise and dust from the utility area is another threat to the community. So we use the sand produced by the construction of the utility to build a buffer hill to block the wind from the north. The data center is sub-merged by the buffer hill. In this way, the buffer hill could sever as a roof top garden to the data center and reduce the construction cost of sand and soil.

INDIVIDUAL PART - TRAIL SYSYTEM

MISSION LOCATION

10

Walkable Community Truly walkable communities are characterized by much more than good sidewalks and street crossings. To make people really want to use walking instead of driving, the trial system should be effective, safe, and attractive. Healthy Living Outdoor exercise in a nature environment benefits both people's physical and mental health. As part of the medical city, the first mission for this recreational trail system is to introduce a better and healthier life-style. This means that the trail is meant to attract people to use this system for their daily exercise and make them have a better exercise experience.

CONNECTIVITY

SECTION

As a recreational trail, another mission for the trail system is to encourage people to exercise more. Different people will have different amounts of exercise. To make the trail system meet these requirements, three loops with different distances are set in the area that is connected to each other.

11

RAIN GARDEN Nigeria has an average 353 rainy days per year. So along the trail, four pocket gardens are placed serve as rain canopy. The distance between each rain garden is about 250 meters along the loop in the low-density residential area. And they are set either in corners of street crossings or at the entrance of neighborhoods.

Rain Splash Area "∞" Pebble Trail

Rain Drums In rainy days, the special shape of pavilions and rainwater lead pipes in sports facilities make concentrate raindrop flow to the drums. People hiding in pavilions can enjoy the music performed by nature. Dance Stage In sunny days, people can play the drums and dance with the music.

Well-drained sandy loam soil with a PH ranges from 5.5-7 is considered the best soil for growing grapes. Both BwC and SkB soil type are acceptable to grow grapes. Also, considered about the traffic and noticeable demand for the vineyard, the location is settled at the northwest comer of the community.
