Last year, I wrote to you all that we had a surprising and wonderful January. Our sales were up—across the board—and our returns were dramatically down. This was true for us throughout 2009, as well. We had an astonishing success with Slow: Life in a Tuscan Town in independents and special markets throughout the country, but particularly on the West Coast. The growing power of sustainability both ignited and embraced us. This year we return with Rabbits & Wrinkles and cook our way through Italy with chef Jessica Theroux as she spends time in the kitchens of Italian grandmothers. From garden to table, you listen, you watch, you learn, coming away with close to 100 classic Italian recipes made the old way—the sustainable way. And, in the spirit of our growing love affair with “local,” we also fell for Marissa Guggiana, a young butcher and writer whose Primal Cuts takes us on a tour of America’s great butchers. They teach us what to think about when we buy meat, educate us on different cuts and preparation techniques, and inspire us to take to the kitchen and get cooking with over 100 recipes contributed by the butchers themselves. Once again, these books are deeply personal and political. Who would have thought that supporting “good” food would ever have been considered political! Today, the idea and ambition of it affects our health, our environment and our economy. The power of spoken memory is something Americans became familiar with through Studs Terkel and the ongoing work of David Isay and StoryCorps. We experienced it directly with The Oxford Project and American Farmer. This fall, we do it again with The Last Good War by photographer Thomas Sanders and writer Veronica Kavass. Poignant, intimate, nostalgic and informative, this profound book introduces you to a piece of our history through the words and images of WWII’s surviving American veterans. What is unforgettable for them becomes unforgettable for us as we look at their faces and read their incredible stories. We are grateful for their loyalty and astonishing courage, tenacity and intelligence. The extraordinary The Oxford Project, winner of everything, including an Alex Award, is coming back as a deluxe paperback and will be the foundation of community projects across the country. Sam Fink’s The Constitution of the United States is also returning, slightly smaller, slightly less expensive, but as powerful as it ever was and we will promote for Constitution Day. Chills and Thrills, an eerie, uncanny and mystical anthology will embrace and celebrate Halloween. And, our charming, winsome Goodnight Book returns with a new jacket and silver gilded pages—just in time for my new and first grandson, George. fa ll

This is our fourth fall with Random House. We have a great deal of gratitude, and offer a huge round of applause to all of you.

Sam Fink has brought his extraordinary illustrative talent to the document on which our liberties as citizens and our continued existence as a nation depend. The Constitution is presented in a manner that invites the reader to wonder at its inspiration, its clarity, and its permanence. The essential document of our nation is thus made accessible to all. It survives, fiercely debated though it may be, more than 200 years after its creation, and it is time for us to turn to it again, to remind ourselves of our foundations. Sam is a master calligrapher, and, in examining the words of the Constitution, we read it better, and see its depths more clearly. His illustrations bring to life our founding fathers, the issues underlying the amendments and the triumphs of this abiding document. Originally published in pen and ink for Random House in 1987, Sam has gone back to the original art and painted it entirely. Welcome Books is honored to present a full-color trade edition of Sam’s startling work, exquisitely designed and produced, and a necessity in all homes as a reference and as an inspiration.

PRIMAL CUTS COOKING WITH AMERICA’S BEST BUTCHERS

By Marissa Guggiana Butchery was nearly a dead art until a recent renaissance turned progressive meat cutters into culinary cult idols. Inspired by a locally driven, nose-to-tail approach to butchery, this new wave of meat mavens is redefining the way we buy and cook our beef, pork, fowl, and game. The momentum of this revived butcher-love has created a carnivorous frenzy, pulling a new generation of home cooks straight into the kitchen—Primal Cuts: Cooking with America’s Best Butchers is their modern meat bible. Marissa Guggiana, food activist, writer, and fourth generation meat purveyor, traveled the country to discover fifty of our most gifted butchers and share their favorite dishes, personal stories, and cooking techniques. From the Michelin star chef to the small farmer who raises free-range animals—butchers are the guide for this unique visual cookbook, packed with tons of their most prized recipes and good old-fashioned know-how. Readers will learn how to cook conventional and unconventional meat cuts, how to talk to their local butchers, and even how to source and buy whole animals for their home freezers. Much more than just a cookbook, Primal Cuts is a revealing look into the lives, philosophy, and work of true food artisans, all bound by a common respect for the food they produce and an absolute love for what they do.

The Alex Award-winning The Oxford Project is back in an abridged paperback edition. Less expensive, more portable, and retaining all the drama of this extraordinary true tale of a seemingly ordinary Midwestern town through the pictures and words of its residents. Equal parts art, American history, cultural anthropology, and human narrative, The Oxford Project is at once personal and universal, surprising and predictable, simple and profound. The Project began in 1984, when artist Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a makeshift studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. At first they trickled in slowly but in the end nearly all of Oxford stood before his lens. Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. What emerges is a living composite of a quintessential Midwestern community, told through the words and images of its residents—then and now. This intricate web of human connections among neighbors, friends, and family, is the mainstay of smalltown American life—unforgettably captured here in Feldstein’s candid black-and-white photography and Bloom’s rhythmic storytelling.

Praise for the Oxford Project “This powerful confessional book draws its strength from the truth that so-called ordinary people are actually the heroes of our American drama.” —Ken Burns, Filmmaker “A can’t-put-it-down read. You’ll be awed by the poetry in the words, dreams and faces of Oxford, Iowa.” —Dave Isay, Founder of StoryCorps “Turning the pages is like rifling through a time capsule, or perhaps a forgotten archive in a small-town library. Oxford’s residents rise up from the book’s pages and hidden nooks, some with vigor. An old-fashioned ‘Facebook.’” —Eliza Honey, The New Yorker “…Pulls you deep into small-town America, with its almost excessive heartbreaks and intermittent joys. This book stays true to its life-worn subjects and to the complexities of what would seem to be the most simple of places.” —The Atlantic “A mosaic of a small town, of hopes and dreams, of triumphs and tragedies, of life and death…The story in Oxford really isn’t about Oxford, Iowa. It’s about any small town in the United States—anywhere in the world.” —Wayne Drash, CNN.com “A personal and touching portrait not only of a specific Midwestern town, but also of the general American spirit: tired, perhaps, but still smiling.” —Claire O’Neill, National Public Radio “Here are the people of Oxford, paired with themselves in an eerie and beautiful reckoning with the past.” —Hank Stuever, The Washington Post “Cleverly designed and artfully illustrated…masterfully and collaboratively conceived…it is of significance to humanities scholars and social scientists as well as to the general reader….strongly recommended.” —Library Journal “At once strikingly intimate and expansive...it has the sweeping scope and power of Our Town or Spoon River Anthology.” —The Austin Chronicle “A glimpse into a real America – riveting and revealatory.” —Steven Rea, The Philadelphia Inquirer “It is about history, personal and collective, and that ubiquitous force: change. This book, like the facets of human features, is so intriguing, it is nearly impossible to put down.” —Lyle Rosdahl, San Antonio Current “What we have in this spellbinding and ambitious and eccentric volume is ‘Our Town’ and ‘Spoon River Anthology’ updated and revivified. We also have journalism, in words and in images, at its heart-stopping best and its most poignant.” —Madeleine Blais, Neiman Reports read more at www.welcomebooks.com/oxfordproject/press.html

The LasT Good War

The Faces and Voices of World War II Photographs by Thomas Sanders Text by veronica kavass World War II remains one of the most galvanizing and defining events in the history of America. Seemingly overnight,

the entire nation unified behind a singular cause. By 1945, the size of the U.S. armed forces had grown from two to twelve million men and women of every color, religion, and creed. An entire generation’s identity was forged, in part, by what many still refer to as the “last good war.” Sixty years later, a young photographer named Thomas Sanders began traveling the country photographing and interviewing hundreds of World War II veterans. The more he shot, the more he listened, and the more captivated he became by their memories of the war. Rarely did these men and women describe themselves as heroes, but that quality was unmistakable to Sanders in their vivid accounts and storied faces. “They are a living record of an incredibly historic time,” Sanders says. “We have so much to learn from their experiences.” The Last Good War: The Faces and Voices of World War II is a chronicle of courage and hardship, sacrifice and determination. The harsh reality of combat is tempered by tender, poignant moments. The overwhelming anguish of lost brothers-in-arms sits alongside stories of enduring friendships. The war brought Americans in touch with people from all over the world—some they fought and some they fought next to—from the beaches of Normandy to the Philippine islands, the North African deserts and the mountains of Japan. They came, these volunteers and draftees, from everywhere and for every reason: from the young woman pulled from her college and covertly trained to break German submarine codes, to the soldier who stormed Hitler’s castle home, these pilots, soldiers, marines, and sailors each provide a unique window into American history. There are two million veterans still alive today, but with each passing day there are fewer and fewer. The images and memories of these men and women, collected in these pages, preserve a profound piece of America’s history. Their past offers us a lasting and powerful perspective on today’s world, and defines the true price of freedom.

New York City landmarks were born during two most stylish and dazzling decades: the 1920s and 1930s. The Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Waldorf-Astoria—as well as dozens of lesser-known but equally stunning office buildings and apartment houses grace this edition. Richard Berenholtz’s photographs of the finest examples of New York City’s art deco architecture are accompanied by literary text from the era.

This awe-inspiring visual odyssey through one of the world’s greatest treasures is an extraordinary publishing achievement. Beautifully photographed by renowned photographer Jon Ortner, this deluxe, numbered edition showcases over 200 images, including 100 panoramas and 10 gatefolds that open to four feet. Shot in over 60 locations across a 130,000-square-mile area, the images cover national parks, national monuments, state parks, wilderness areas, and tribal lands, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Petrified Forest.

Inscribed & illustrated by Sam Fink • $500.00 ($645.00 CAN) • 45 loose folios, each 22" x 16-3/4", in a 23-1/4" x 18" x 1-1/4" clamshell box; includes a separate folio with the English translation and a print signed and numbered by Sam Fink • Limited to 1,000 signed and numbered copies • ISBN 978-1-59962-040-4 ART/RELIGION–JUDAISM www.welcomebooks.com/exodus The Book of Exodus was originally conceived by artist Sam Fink as a gift to his family, now living in Israel. Fink created forty original watercolor skyscapes, one for each chapter in the book of Exodus. This extraordinary text details the Jews’ enslavement in Egypt, their harrowing journey with Moses out of bondage, and the new laws established for them by their God. In these folio prints Sam Fink reaches his family across an ocean—and readers around the world—with breathtaking images that speak to this powerful story. Each watercolor is meticulously hand-lettered with the Old Testament text, in Hebrew and in the Jewish Publication Society’s 1917 English translation. Housed in a blue cloth-covered clamshell box.

Nonagenarian Sam Fink’s unadorned, classically simple calligraphy and exquisite illustrations—originally done in pen-and-ink in 1987 and newly painted in color for these imposing folios (15" x 22")—are approachable and profoundly affecting, underscoring what an elegantly simple document our forefathers had the wisdom and forethought to craft. Housed in an exquisite deep clamshell box (16-1/4" x 23-1/4") and lined in blue Saifu cloth, it also contains a limited-edition print of the entire Constitution, newly calligraphed onto one sheet, signed and numbered by Sam Fink. It is a worthy addition to any home.
