The Choctaw Casino & Resort makes for an appealing overnight option, thanks to luxurious rooms and plentiful shops, restaurants, and entertainment options that include a movie theater and bowling alley.
Further north on U.S. Highway 69, the small town of Atoka holds one of Oklahoma’s newest attractions. A must-see for fans of Reba McEntire, Reba’s Place is a restaurant, bar, entertainment venue, and store in the country music superstar’s hometown. The 15,000-square-foot facility, which opened in January 2023, includes a collection of memorabilia from McEntire’s archives.
Next up, it’s time for a taste of lake life with a stop in the Lake Eufaula area. The sprawling, 105,000-acre lake is an excellent spot for catching sand bass. Along its shores, Lake Eufaula State Park has numerous RV and tent-camping sites, along with three yurts--round, tent-like structures ideal for glamping. They offer comfortable beds, heating, and air conditioning.

Continuing north, Muskogee beckons to travelers with its spring blooms. All through April, the city’s Honor Heights Park holds its annual Azalea Festival. Visitors can drive or walk through the park to see beautifully manicured displays of azaleas, tulips, dogwoods, and wisteria. Muskogee is also home to several fascinating museums, including the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, which highlights the rich Native American culture of the area, and the Three Rivers Museum, which tells the story of the area’s development. There are numerous overnight options in Muskogee, including the charming Whitlock Wishouse Bed & Breakfast, housed in a historic mansion constructed in 1919.
Just north of Muskogee sits Sequoyah State Park. Situated on the shores of Fort Gibson Lake, the park features many options for outdoor fun, including a golf course, guided horseback rides, and many hiking trails. Lodging options at the park include a beautiful modern lodge, cozy Cottages, and plentiful RV and tent campsites.
Further up U.S. Highway 69, travelers will find the Route 66 city of Miami. It’s home to an architectural jewel in the 1929-built Coleman Theatre, which features a Spanish Mission Revival exterior and an elegant Louis XV interior. The theater is located in the heart of the city’s downtown, which is dotted with fun shops and public art. Miami has many hotels for overnight stays before continuing on north.
