At Goddard’s in York, discover the cherished family home of Noel Goddard Terry, of the famous chocolate-making firm, Terry’s of York. Designed by architect Walter Brierley in the Arts and Crafts style, the house is complemented by four acres of gardens, designed by George Dillistone. A hidden gem - only a stone’s throw away from York city centre.

Scented old roses climb arbour and arches; ornamental ‘Flower Basket’ beds and borders are filled with period plants such as lilies, lavenders, black hollyhocks as well as curious names such as ‘Obedient Plant’ and ‘Dame’s Violet’ appear at the 1830s garden of Red House, Gomersal. This beautiful and distinctive 1830s style is rarely found in period gardens today.

A garden with layers of 18th and 19th century design set around Georgian Wentworth Castle, including national collections of rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias and an exquisitely restored Victorian conservatory. Two miles from Junction 37 of the M1 near Barnsley, the gardens are open daily, year round. Dogs are welcome in the extensive deer parkland on alead. Visitor facilities are accessible, but the Gardens are hilly.

Burnby Hall & Gardens in Pocklington has magnificent gardens incorporating two lakes which contain a National Collection of hard water lilies, and are teeming with a vast collection of fish. The nine acres of changing vistas include a woodland walk, Victorian and secret garden, extensive rockeries and a fine collection of ornamental and indigenous trees.

An Elizabethan stately home with award winning gardens near Driffield. The gardens offer manicured lawns with more than a hundred yew topiary bushes and classical pond with a fountain and a pebble mosaic garden, Elizabethan walled garden containing three thousand different plants, a potager filled with herbs, herbaceous borders, maze, jungle garden and a woodland walk with wildlife sculptures.

A stunning contemporary garden and a 21st century plantsman’s paradise, The Walled Garden at Scampston, Malton was created by internationally acclaimed designer, Piet Oudolf, and is set within the walls of the kitchen garden of Scampston Hall. Striking perennial meadow planting works well with more traditional parts of the garden.

Vibrant city centre shopping If you are looking for a unique gift idea, want to spoil yourself or treat the kids, there is no better place to go shopping than in one of Yorkshire’s cities.

Shops in York have a mix of designer labels, high street names, independent and antique shops selling vintage jewellery, enough to satisfy the most demanding shopper. City centre or out of town at the new Vanguard offer a great mix of shopping styles. In the compact city centre of Leeds, there’s just a short walk between Trinity Leeds with 120 shops, bars, restaurants and cinema, the sophisticated Victoria Quarter and iconic Kirkgate Market. The Grand Theatre in Leeds seats approximately 1550 at full capacity, with the auditorium providing a home for performances of all types.
