Robert Smithson architecture, and a diverse art collection including exquisite Elizabethan carvings and the finest contemporary works, inspired Simon Jenkins, author of ‘England’s Thousand Best Houses’, to describe Burton Agnes Hall as ‘the perfect English house’ and one of England’s twenty finest houses. Outside the Elizabethan walled garden contains a magnificent floral display and in the courtyard visitors will find unique, handcrafted gifts and souvenirs in the shops and the café offers home-made meals using the garden’s fruit and vegetables and local ingredients.

The terrace is completed by an iconic temple at one end and a Tuscan temple at the other with their differing architecture and styles, and in spring the banks between the temples are awash with wild flowers.

Ampleforth, York, YO62 4EY Tel: 01609 776000 Email: reception@ampleforth.org.uk Web: www.visitors.ampleforth.org.uk The Abbey Church, a Grade Two listed building, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who also designed the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and the red telephone box. Scott designed the choir stalls which were carved by Robert Thompson of Kilburn. As you walk around the Abbey you will see many mice carved on the furniture. Inside the Abbey you will find much stained glass designed by Patrick Reyntiens (a former pupil of the school) and his son John.

Take a visit to our tea room and you will find artwork from Fr Martin Haigh who has been a member of the Community since 1940. Fr Martin was formerly Art Master at Ampleforth College. His work features heavily on pastel landscapes and in particular on French landscapes.
