Wu Chi-Tsung: Dust Site Gallery
Site Gallery presents two interactive installations by the Taiwanese artist and rising star Wu Chi-Tsung. Crystal City 003 and Dust make use of everyday materials, plastic boxes, lights and dust, to create meditative dream worlds, influenced by the rapid development of Taiwan’s urban landscapes. It captures the shadows of tiny dust particles as they spiral around the audience to make a mesmerising abstract projection. The faster you move, the more the dust swirls. This is the first chance for UK audiences to see Dust, which was produced by Site Gallery in 2006 and shown later that year at the Shanghai Biennial. sitegallery.org

Written by nineteen year old Shelagh Delaney, A Taste of Honey is one of the most influential and taboo-breaking plays of its generation. Set in Salford in the 1950s this angry kitchen sink drama lifted the lid on modern relationships, revealing uncomfortable truths about the values of post-war Britain. As fresh and insightful as ever, A Taste of Honey returns to the stage as the debut production of new Artistic Director Mark Babych. hulltruck.co.uk

Every object tells a story. This clock owned by the ill-fated Queen Marie Antoinette survived the turmoil of the French Revolution, ending up in the Music Room at Harewood House. It features in an exhibition of Harewood’s exceptional collection of 18th century Sèvres porcelain, highlighting a little known historic link between Yorkshire and France. Work by contemporary artists Dan Scott and Michelle Taylor provides a bridge to the past, and the season is completed by a celebration of the great sculptor Henry Moore. harewood.org

Over 100 paintings, photographs and sculptures highlight Yorkshire’s influence on some of the finest artists the world has seen and their view of life here. From J M W Turner’s familiar landscapes to Atkinson Grimshaw’s moonlit Victorian streets, and rarely seen work by Bradford-born David Hockney ‑ this exhibition places past masters and contemporary artists together in a new context, to send a picture postcard of Yorkshire to the world.

Monday’s Child tells a simple poetic story of the unique bond between a grandmother and a little girl, sharing the delights and surprises of the respective stages of their lives. Together they love to sing and dress up and are often oblivious of the challenges that the real world throws at them. Award-winning writer Brendan Murray and critically acclaimed theatre company tutti frutti, present an imaginative, dream-like and funny story about learning, remembering, growing old and facing new challenges. Ideal for 3-7 year olds. tutti-frutti.org.uk 15

There are few sounds as joyful as the peal of bells. The change ringing compositions we hear in this country sound simple but conceal a complex, ever-changing pattern which is uniquely English and is now a specialist art-form kept alive by volunteers. Church bells along the race route will swing into action as the cyclists approach – amplifying Yorkshire’s welcome to the racers and celebrating a new Festival of Ringing.

THE Last Train to Scarborough Stephen Jospeph Theatre
Scarborough, Yorkshire 1914, eve of the Great War. Detective Sergeant Jim Stringer is sent to investigate the disappearance of a railway fireman from The Paradise guest house and identify the culprit before he himself becomes the second victim. Andrew Martin’s Edwardian crime thriller is brought chillingly to life by the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Artistic Director, Chris Monks, with original music, a cast of Yorkshire actors and film sequences shot in the National Railway Museum. See it in-the-round at Scarborough’s world famous art deco theatre. sjt.uk.com

I Fagiolini presented by the National Centre for Early Music I Fagiolini’s unconventional concerts are loved by audiences for their adventurous performance style and world class vocals. This chart topping ensemble returns to Yorkshire for a concert that summons up the spirit of the Venetian Carnival and its mix of theatrics, politics, nobility and mischief. Directed by Robert Hollingworth, I Fagiolini brings to life the masques and mayhem through the music of Banchieri, Vecchi, Croce and pieces by Willaert, Monteverdi and Andrea Gabrieli. ncem.co.uk/bemf

As the competition hots up, it’s easy to forget the physical demands on the cyclists – their long challenging journey, the pain of the burn and the real uphill struggles they face on their way through Yorkshire. Dryden Goodwin’s fascinating film installation, documenting a group of young divers as they train and compete, examines the physical and emotional dynamics of sport and reminds us that it’s never as easy as it looks. hullcc.gov.uk

Black Dyke Band
The Grand Départ passes through the heartland of ‘brass band country’ so naturally the Tour de Brass follows these routes, connecting them with Yorkshire’s renowned tradition of brass music. The programme takes the form of free open-air brass-band performances, plus a very special Yorkshire Prom by the world-famous Black Dyke Band. Experience the versatility, variety and top-class musicianship flourishing across the county in brass bands today.

As you cycle into Yorkshire along the Way of the Roses, a fat sheep on a bicycle marks the way into Bentham, the first of ten passing places on Sustrans’ cycleway from Morecambe to Bridlington. Bentham’s Grand Départ celebration is a carnival of live music, dance, street theatre and a fun-filled bike ride around the town. Take part in carnival workshops the week before, then join the procession on bike or foot, and doff your cap at the Queen’s Bloomers, a new public artwork described as sculptural underwear! pioneerprojects.org.uk

Bicyclism is an exhibition about people in and around Leeds who inhabit the world of cycling, its history and popular culture. A collaboration between photographer Casey Orr, writer/musician Boff Whalley and producer Jenny Harris, Bicyclism includes a series of new portraits of (extra) ordinary Leeds cyclists, from stunt bikers in skate parks to local men and women who pedal daily, well into old age, alongside crowd-sourced and archive images of Leeds people on their bikes. A new soundtrack composed using bicycles will be performed live in the museum on Thursday 26th June. bicyclism.co.uk

Lost Boy Racer
Alice Allart and Paddy Waters, photo - Pablo Meneu
A curious cart and bicycle combination appears in the streets, manned by performers and circus trick cyclists. With skilful movement, comedy and chaos they fall and flounder towards an unknown finishing line, overshadowed by cyclists of almost superhuman ability and endurance. Created by Yorkshire-based Stumble danceCircus, the performers will also pass on their skills to others during public workshops teaching trick cycling, choreography and physical comedy to aspiring Jacques Tatis out there.

Julie Amanda Bokowiec & Lawrence Batley Theatre Sean Racer used to be an energetic wildcat hooked on cycling. Now he’s a bored 40-something on the brink of a crisis. He hatches a plan to get his life back on two wheels and fulfil a youthful dream of riding the Tour de France, albeit on a bike fitted to rollers in the shed. Lost Boy Racer is a quirky comedy-drama with a large dose of cycling wisdom, some off-the-wall bike antics and a love story, of sorts... thelbt.org

Cheer-Sing Louise Gibbs
Cheering crowds will be the motivating sound track to the cyclist’s ride through Yorkshire. Cheer-Sing intends to strengthen the motivating power of cheering, not just by raising a big noise but by creating a locally distinctive soundscape through which competitors will speed. Cheer-Sing workshops will teach communities along the route to devise, lead and perform their own chant-songs and clapping-raps, raising a mighty wave of support for the racers.
