Spring into Easter Whether it be the start of longer and warmer days, the first cheerful daffodil bloom or the prospect of an Easter egg indulgence, spring for most of us is a long anticipated and glorious time of year. With Yorkshire boasting such beautiful scenery and an exciting and diverse range of activities this spring, you will certainly be ready to come out of hibernation.

Spring flower power The county is awash with colour as the spring flowers come into bloom. From March, joyful and abundant displays of daffodils can be enjoyed across the region in the beautiful gardens of Harewood House, Wentworth Castle Gardens, Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Beningbrough Hall, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, Parcevall Hall and Gardens, and within the grounds of Mount Grace Priory. Or for an alternate splash of colour visit Burnby Hall Tulip Festival. Later in the spring, Newton Woods in the shadow of Roseberry Topping, Moss Valley Woodlands near Sheffield and Nostell Priory, are renowned for incredible displays of bluebells. The candy floss pink cherry blossom lining the pathways of The Stray – the 200 acres of public grassland in Harrogate town centre - is also a beautiful sight to behold.

Peter Rabbit - Mischief and Mayhem

Experience Peter Rabbit through the ages - this new and interactive exhibition features rarely seen original illustrations and early manuscripts by Beatrix Potter and much more. Visitors can help Mrs Tiggy-Winkle hang up laundry or visit Mrs Rabbit in her burrow and children can dress up as Peter, curl up with a book in the story corner or enjoy planting carrots in Mr McGregor’s garden. Tickets: There is a small entry charge of £3 per person to this exhibition. Under 2s free.

The Harrogate Spring Flower Show at the Yorkshire Show Ground from 25 to 28 April is the first big event in the gardening calendar, welcoming the new growing season with a spectacular celebration of the very best in horticulture.

Easter kitchen Roll up your sleeves and join in the fun at Swinton Cookery School or Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School on their chocolate making courses and make your own Easter Egg or discover the range of mouth-watering Easter and spring themed courses on offer at Bettys Cookery School.

Easter egg hunts and trails Hop down to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Harrogate between 13 to 29 April for Easter fun for all the family. Enjoy stories with the mad capped Garden Detectives, Easter crafts and birds-of-prey demonstrations. Tread in the Easter Bunny’s footsteps as you follow a nature trail and search for clues in the garden at East Riddlesden Hall near Keighley on their popular Cadbury Easter Egg hunt. Or for something a bit different, at the annual Dragon Egg Hunt at Pontefract Castle you’ll find fun trails and creative crafts – you may even spy a dragon!

Fun on the farm A fun packed visit to see the adorable spring lambs and other animals, attractions and activities at Thornton Hall Country Park or Cannon Hall Farm makes for the perfect family day out.

Visitors to Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife & Falconry Centre's Easter Egg Hunt will love its magical Madagascan theme. Meet amazing species up close, take part in crafts and activities and follow the trail and hunt for clues to win an Easter egg!

2 1 Swaledale Festival, Yorkshire Dales 25 May to 8 June, Yorkshire Dales The annual Swaledale festival encompasses over sixty high-quality music, arts and walking events throughout Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale, including classical, folk and world music. The festival has won numerous awards and is highly regarded both nationally and internationally. This year festival highlights include Paco Peña, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Tasmin Little.

Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival 12 to 14 July, Driffield Idyllically set in one of the UK’s finest Elizabethan stately homes, Burton Agnes Hall, this festival welcomes to its manicured lawns and ornate Great Hall over 25 artists to provide a rhythmic weekend of jazz and blues. There’s civilised camping, children’s entertainers, local ale and food and late-night acts. The perfect summer venue to soak up the hottest acts in jazz and blues.

6 Underneath the Stars Festival 2 to 4 August, Barnsley In the cosy pocket of rural Yorkshire at Cinderhill Farm this year’s line-up includes The Proclaimers, Billy Bragg and festival ambassador, Kate Rusby as well as an eclectic mix of international and local music, lively street-arts performers, storytellers, art installations and circus activities. Day and weekend tickets available.

3 Tramlines Festival 19 to 21 July, Sheffield Tramlines is the biggest party in Sheffield. Over the weekend, expect to see an amazing line-up of music acts with more than 70 artists across four stages, including some major headliners. It also features comedy, a pop-up cinema, a family area and a spectacular selection of food and drink stalls.

4 Opera North in the City 26 to 28 July, Leeds

The Orchestra of Opera North are joined by: Jimmy Somerville, Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones and more for 80s Classical, special guest vocalists for the third instalment of The Symphonic Sounds of Back to Basics and a live soundtrack screening of Jurassic Park to close the festival.

8 Scarborough Open Air Theatre Summer, Scarborough Yorkshire should be so lucky! Yes, that’s right the pop legend, Kylie, is one of the superstar acts performing at this fantastic venue this summer - the largest outdoor venue in Europe.

Having a field day The rich pastures and fertile land ensure that farming is at the heart of this county. Testament to this is the fine selection of agricultural and country events across the region showcasing their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;best in showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Each typically feature exhibitions of livestock and rare breeds, dog trials, farm machinery and show jumping as well as local food and drink, family activities and arts and crafts. Feeling Sheepish The countryside comes to town for fun packed events celebrating the different breeds of sheep, sheep shearing and even sheep dancing.

1 The Great Yorkshire Show 9 to 11 July, Harrogate One of the biggest events in the agricultural calendar across England, welcoming over 130,000 visitors and 8,500 animals over three glorious days. The Great Yorkshire Show is a celebration of food, countryside and agriculture with something for everyone of every age while keeping farming at its heart. Masham Sheep Fair 5 to 6 October, Masham The popular Masham Sheep Fair has been an annual event for over 30 years. An action packed and fun-filled event programme includes a sheep show, sheep racing, sheepdog demonstrations, Morris dancers, tours of Theakston’s & Black Sheep Breweries, as well as a small Children's Fair.

BBC Countryfile Live 15 to 18 August, Castle Howard Castle Howard - one of Britain’s finest historic houses - will host the first ever BBC Countryfile Live to be held in the North. BBC’s Countryfile is one of Britain’s most loved TV programmes, attracting over 5 million viewers each week. Over four days there will be a range of show attractions including the Countryfile Main Stage featuring the programme presenters, the Wildlife Zone, the Farmyard Zone and the Dog Lover’s Arena. It will represent the best of the northern countryside and promises to be a fantastic day out.

Unmissable foodie experiences Slingsby Gin Experiences, Harrogate

Let the fun be-gin! Slingsby have created the ultimate experiences for gin lovers with various dates available throughout the year. The Spirit of Gin takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of gin. While the Master Distiller guides you through the different botanicals as you distil your own master blend.

Surf and turf The Fish and Ships Festival comes to the atmospheric town of Whitby. A town where you can still experience the seafarer’s way of life from sea to shore as it has been for hundreds of years. It is the perfect setting to celebrate Yorkshire’s maritime culture. The two-day event starts on the 18 May - from fishing boats and Captain Cook to award-winning fish restaurants, celebrity chefs and much-loved fish and chips, this festival offers a huge range of activities the whole family will love. This year Seafest Maritime Festival celebrates its 21st anniversary from 26 to 28 July and is set to serve up a feast of maritime delights for all the family in Scarborough’s glorious

South Bay. Whet your appetite at food stalls serving the ‘catch of the day’ and enjoy free seafood cookery demonstrations with leading Yorkshire chefs. Wash it all down with a pint of Yorkshire’s finest as the Great Yorkshire Brewery hosts a real ale and beer festival with over 40 local real ales, beers and ciders to sample. For a jam-packed foodie weekend with celebrity guests the Hairy Bikers, Mary Berry and many more, the Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival at Funkirk Farm near Skipton is bursting with activity for all the family. From 20 to 21 July enjoy cookery workshops, artisan food and drinks producers, a vintage fun fair and an excellent line up of music acts. Join in the fun for the day or camp the whole weekend.

Turtle-y Awesome Summer The Deep, Hull, 20 July - 1 September Go on a turtle-y awesome journey with The Deep’s very own resident turtles - Sensa and Mabouche. Find out about their story and how they came to live here in Yorkshire. Learn how experts track turtle movements in the ocean and see where they migrate to and how they are cared for at the turtle hospital when they get into trouble.

British Museum Treasures Come to JORVIK Jorvik Viking Centre, York, until April 2020 Discover a hoard of Viking treasures and artefacts including the Halton Moor Hoard, coins of King Canute, spearheads, swords and axe heads. As well as exquisite jewellery discovered in Gotland, off the coast of Sweden.

Beautifully set within historic woodland, children can join a fun filled day of outdoor learning and play. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they will gather around the camp fire, build natural shelters, toast marshmallows and learn wilderness survival skills.

Lego®: Building the Bowes Museum The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, 25 May to 13 October Everyone of all ages, from children to the young at heart, will see this Museum in a new way – recreating the history and collections in LEGO®! Start by building some of the objects from their collection which tell the story of John and Joséphine Bowes, before ending up in a makerspace that explains how the Museum was built.

Yorkshire is home to fantastic producing theatres creating both adaptations of popular classics and brand-new work. Here’s a taste of what Yorkshire’s theatre scene has lined up for you this spring and summer.

You're bard Delight in a theatre experience like no other – historic, exciting, intimate and immersive! Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will be recreated beside the iconic 13th century Clifford’s Tower in the heart of York from 25 June to 1 September. Inspired by Shakespeare’s famous London Rose Playhouse, built in 1587, this ‘pop-up’ theatre spectacularly re-creates the magic and atmosphere whilst staging four of his greatest plays – Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night. Outside, visitors can experience a vibrant Shakespearean village, offering the finest Yorkshire food and drinks, and an array of entertainment minstrels and a stunning Elizabethan garden.

Yorkshire has a glorious array of cultural attractions with hundreds of galleries across the county providing ample opportunity to experience everything from sculptures and fine art to fashion and crafts.

Henry Moore Institute

Big names in Yorkshire Millennium Gallery, Sheffield Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing 1 February to 6 May 2019 Leonardo da Vinci was arguably the greatest artist who ever lived. This spring, twelve of his most extraordinary drawings will go on display in Sheffield as part of a major nationwide exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of his death.

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford David Hockney Exhibition until June 2027 Cartwright Hall Art Gallery houses the public collection that inspired David Hockney as a child and student, has opened a dedicated gallery about his life and work. See an introduction to the artist and his techniques and early works showing how it all began in Bradford and watch previously unseen footage of the artist in his Bridlington studio.

Yorkshire Sculpture International 100 days Celebrating Sculpture 22 June to 29 September 2019 Exploring sculpture in its many forms by international artists, this festival across Leeds and Wakefield will build upon Yorkshire's rich history as the birth place and home of pioneering sculptors Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Damien Hirst. Yorkshire Sculpture International is organised by four world-renowned cultural institutions the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park and will showcase the breadth and diversity of contemporary sculpture practice and will include major new outdoor commissions across both cities

showcases sculpture in the heart of Leeds named after the celebrated sculptor who grew up in Castleford and went to art school in Leeds. The iconic building has three beautiful gallery spaces which host an ever-changing programme of exhibitions accompanied by tours, talks and events.

Leeds Art Gallery has one of the most significant collections of 20th century British art. Leeds Art Gallery offers you the chance to see work by some of the most important national and international artists and is the city’s most visited attraction with nearly half a million visiting every year with a changing programme of exhibitions.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is described by some as “one of the great jewels of the English countryside”. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park presents outstanding sculptures by world-renowned artists within its parkland. The art without walls concept was the idea of Director Peter Murray CBE when he set out to establish a sculpture park in the grounds.

The Hepworth Wakefield is an award-winning art gallery in the heart of Yorkshire, set within Wakefield’s historic waterfront, overlooking the River Calder. It is named after Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Yorkshire’s stunning landscapes, giant skies, fast running rivers, waterfalls, castles and sheep have all inspired his work that is rooted in authenticity and speaks of hope, love, struggle and challenge. A year of celebrations see him exhibiting around the world, as well as North Yorkshire. He is the official artist for the Tour de Yorkshire 2019 and has created a collection of beautiful paintings to celebrate this year’s exciting event.

WW2 Living History Eden Camp 20 to 21 April Set in the buildings and grounds of an original World War Two Prisoner of War Camp, this unique historical site is now a museum and home to immersive displays that cover both social and military history. Over the Easter weekend, observe re-enactors portraying both military and civilians in this 1940s showcase, as they dress in the uniforms and clothing of the period.

Tudor Weekend Bolton Castle 11 to 12 May Come and meet the Tudor household of Lord Scrope. Find out about their daily lives and some of the great changes that affected them and learn more about one of the most famous of the castle’s guests, Mary Queen of Scots, and how she spent her time during her six months of captivity here. Interactive activities include enjoying the sights and smells of a Tudor kitchen at work and a tour of the castle.

Newby Hall will be surrounded by vintage and classic cars, for the north’s biggest one-day car show – the annual Historic Vehicle Rally. Up to 1500 cars of all makes, from Aston Martin to Wolseley will be polished up by their proud owners and put on parade for one of the highlights of Newby’s opening season.

Open Day Middleton Railway Trust 8 and 9 September Tour the historic railway site where you can also discover its medieval history, its claim as the country’s first wooden railway and its significant locomotive impact during the Industrial Revolution, right through to the present day. Full of atmosphere and fabulous neon lights, Sheffield's spectacular neon night race is a little bit of fun to lighten up those dreary winter nights and is suitable for all. Choose your distance - 5km or 10km – and grab your free neon for a run with a difference.

Total Warrior Bramham Park, Leeds 21 to 23 June

Total Warrior ‘The Original’ is now in its 9th year and is still as big and as popular as ever. The 12km course gives you the full Warrior experience and comes packed with some seriously exciting and challenging obstacles. Expect classic obstacles like the ‘Human BBQ’ and ‘The Plunge’, but also come prepared for new obstacles like the ‘Waterfall’.

Yorkshire Beast Sportive, 22 June Possibly the toughest road ride in the UK. Take on the challenge of cycling both the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Moors all in one day.

Yorkshire True Grit, 21 to 23 June One of the toughest adventure rides in the UK, using a combination of public bridleways and private tracks on the stunning North York Moors.

White Rose Classic, 23 June The premier Yorkshire Dales sportive for road cyclists with three routes of different lengths to suit your experience and goals in amazing Dales scenery.

Fadmoor Sportive, 16 June A beginner friendly 26 mile route going around the peaceful and traffic free valley of Bransdale. Stunning moorland views, E-bikes also welcome.

Yorkshire Lass Sportive, 28 July One for the ladies – this event offers a choice of three scenic routes. The sportive encourages those new to cycling and the experienced to take part.

Sheffield Walking Festival

Near York 20 to 21 July

In its tenth year, the Castle Howard Triathlon will once again feature the obligatory picture postcard backdrop and a course with something for every level of triathlete. Race entrants will start the race by swimming through Castle Howard’s Great Lake before transitioning into the technical bike route through the glorious rural idyll of Yorkshire and the Howardian Hills. The spectacular run leg passes through the undulating countryside of the estate before a sprint finish tops everything off in style right in front of the main doors of the house.

Take in Sheffield on foot with over 30 enjoyable walks for a range of abilities across the city. Explore heritage and urban areas and the dramatic landscapes of the stunning Peak District National Park.

historic fishing villages full of character and intrigue, where you can find secret picnic spots and enjoy nature trips out at sea. Or take to the water and try your hand at surfing, sea kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding at Sandsend, Whitby and Runswick Bay. We're not known as the dinosaur coast for nothing... fossil hunting, rock pooling and beach combing can be found along the coastline between Runswick Bay and Boggle Hole. In late summer the heather flushes purple creating a truly magnificent sight, a bright pink and mauve carpet that stretches for mile after mile.

Slow down and inhale its sweet smell, lie in the sun and listen to the moorland birds, or walk through the charming villages that pepper the landscape. The North York Moors is home to the nation’s favourite national trail, the Cleveland Way and 2019 marks its 50th anniversary. International flights connect Yorkshire to the rest of the world, as well as UK flights from Aberdeen, Belfast, London Heathrow, Newquay and Southampton to Leeds-Bradford Yorkshire’s Airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Humberside Airport and Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Yorkshire’s cities and market towns are easy to get to from other parts of the country. Travel to Yorkshire with high-speed trains from either London or Edinburgh in less than two hours with LNER and Grand Central services. You can also get to Yorkshire by train from the North West with First TransPennine Express, who offer direct services into the county from Liverpool and Manchester. Northern Rail also offer direct services to Yorkshire from the North West.

Yorkshire by road Britain’s biggest and fastest highways cross Yorkshire, making getting here by car or by coach very simple. For details of the quickest (or the most scenic) driving routes see the AA or RAC websites www.theaa.com and www.rac.co.uk. Plan a journey online with Arriva, who have buses running across Yorkshire on a regular basis.

Yorkshire by sea Ferry services to Hull and Newcastle link Yorkshire with Northern Europe. P&O Ferries operate overnight services to Hull from Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
