Weld Australia delivers the theory training for AS 1796 Certificates 1-9. Students are then required to complete the practical training and examination at a TAFE or a similar training organisation.

While Weld Australia does not conduct the practical training, we do partner with four highly professionally TAFEs across the nation, including:

Federation University: Regional Victoria’s largest education institution, Federation University has campuses in Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland and and approximately 1,300 committed staff. For further details, contact Tony Monagle via a.monagle@federation.edu.au.

TAFE Gippsland: With campuses throughout eastern Victoria, from Warragul to Lakes Entrance, TAFE Gippsland offers a diverse range of high quality training programs. For further details, contact enquiries@tafegippsland.edu.au.

TAFE Queensland: With campuses in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, North and Far North Queensland, Darling Downs and Wide Bay Burnett, TAFE Queensland delivers job-focused training. For further details, visit: tafeqld.edu.au/ contact/enquire.

TAFE SA: South Australia’s largest vocational education and training provider. TAFE SA delivers job-focused training across a range of industries, at locations across the state. For further details, contact: SEOShortCourses@tafesa.edu.au. An International Welding Specialist (IWS) qualification will expand your career. This IIW qualification is advised for all Responsible Welding Coordinators, and recommended in AS/NZS ISO 3834 and ISO 14731. An IWS understands the factors that influence welding quality and conditions, how to oversee welders effectively, and the variables that help to maximise site productivity. This highly engaging online course will start on Monday 27 February 2023. It might not be until next year, but the course is already filling fast. Don’t miss out—book now!

ENROL NOW

IWT often manage, supervise, and oversee all company welding activities at a highly technical level. As such, you will likely have overall responsibility for the quality and coordination of all on site welding activities – a strong bonus for your resume. An International Welding Technologist (IWT) qualification is a strongly advised qualification for Responsible Welding Coordinators, and highly recommended in both AS/NZS ISO 3834 and ISO 14731. With four modules, this course will kick off on Thursday 16 March. Places are limited, so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

Weld Australia recently facilitated in-house training for the IIW International Welding Inspector - Basic (IWI-B) qualification at Peabody in Mudgee. Peabody is a leading coal producer, providing essential products for the production of affordable, reliable energy and steel.

Recommended in both AS/NZS ISO 3834 and AS/NZS 1554.1, the IWI-B the expands your career as a welding inspector.

This internationally recognised course provides extensive knowledge surrounding welding, inspection theory and application. It includes theoretical components such as mechanical and visual inspection techniques; inspection procedures and acceptance criteria; identification of weld imperfections associated with pre-production; fabrication and post fabrication; and much more.

Weld Australia recently facilitated in-house Welding Supervisor training for ASC according to AS 1796 Certificate 10 and AS 2214 in Perth.

Welding Supervisors play a vital role in industry, they understand the factors that influence welding quality, how to oversee welders effectively, and the variables that help maximise productivity. A Welding Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all welding meets the appropriate standards.

Welding Supervisors understand the sector’s complex theoretical knowledge, and how it applies in practice. By pursuing a career in this area, you can open yourself up to many new professional qualities – leadership, teamwork, communication, responsibility and problem solving.

AUGMENTED REALITY WELDER TRAINING AT TULLAWONG STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Adam Coorey (Regional Training Coordinator, Weld Australia) spent some time at Tullawong State High School in Caboolture this month.

Over 30 students had the opportunity to try welding for the first time using the Soldamatic augmented reality welding simulators. The students were taught according to ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders—Fusion welding. Students were given a real Weld Procedure Specification (WPS) to read and practice. By the end of the session, most of the students were able to lay virtual welds within the parameters of the WPS.

Terry Young MP, Federal Minister for Longman, visited Tullawong State High School and took up the welding challenge, giving the Soldamatics a try himself.

According to Terry, “Adam from Weld Australia was enthusiastically instructing the students on the virtual welding machine...This is an incredible piece of machinery helps train students with real skills in a safe environment. It was really exciting to see students being interested in trade practices that they may (or may not) take up in the future.”

Students at St Joseph’s Nudgee College also had the opportunity to try their hand at welding this month. Adam Coorey again provided training on Soldamatic augmented reality simulators, in line with ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders—Fusion welding.

Another 30 students had the opportunity to undertake the training, and most performed at levels to be expected of experienced welders within two hours.

There are two fusion welding courses that adhere to ISO 9606 Qualification test of welders on Training.gov.au. This is the authoritative source of nationally recognised training and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). These two courses were developed in Victoria in 2018 and use augmented reality welding simulators as a key component of the training.

TRANSITION WORKERS To be awarded a certificate for the Course in Fusion Welding to AS/NZS ISO 9606 for Transition Workers, you must successfully complete seven units of competency (four core and three elective). Core units: • Simulate fusion welding processes using augmented reality equipment • Identify welding processes, safe welding practices and use of hand and power tools • Interpret and apply AS/NZS ISO 9606 for fusion welding processes • Perform fusion welding procedures to meet the procedures of ISO 96061 (Steels – carbon steels)

EXPERIENCED WELDERS To be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Fusion Welding to AS/NZS ISO 9606 for Experienced Welders, you must successfully complete three units of competency (one core and two elective). The core unit is: Interpret and apply AS/NZS ISO 9606 for fusion welding processes.
