Purls & Wisdom At Weleda we are avid knitters and we were delighted when the hand-knitting brand ‘The North Circular’ asked us to provide some of our Biodynamically grown lavender for their exclusive ‘Hot Bot Knit Kit’ this Christmas. North Circular is the brainchild of models Katharine Poulton and Lily Cole, through which they create the most beautiful hand knitted accessories. We asked Katherine to share with us how she discovered Weleda. How and when were you introduced to Weleda? My boyfriend is a Weleda addict, he is from California and is very switched on to natural products, foot rubs with ‘Skin Food‘ are valuable currency in our house. What are your favourite Weleda products? That is a hard one, there are so many! The lavender body oil for the winter, after a hot bath…to sleep like a baby. Tell us about how you source the sustainable natural fibres that are used to make the items in your collection and what makes it sustainable? We look for the finest 100% natural materials that have the lowest carbon footprint, so here in the UK we found the king of fibres to be the Alpaca and the Bluefaced Leicester wools, we spin and dye them here and then hand knit them into our accessories. Why do you think using sustainable materials is important? The earth is ultimately a beautiful and abundant place that has sustained life for 3.8 billion years using its sustainable cycles - if we can work in harmony we have a bright future. 22

Have you always worked with sustainable materials? Yes, the ethos of the company was the starting point, local, natural, handcrafting. The interesting part is that once you set yourself limitations, then you can see how far you can push those and it gets you really focused, also you are always challenged to keep learning and researching to try to improve yourself and what you are creating.

Do you think it is important to use natural skincare? Many people don’t consider that what we cover our body in, we are also ingesting. You wouldn’t put non natural things onto your dinner plate to eat - so why would you ‘eat’ it with your skin? I have a hard time with nail varnish in that respect, it seems very unnatural to me. I also teach my friends not to rub too hard at their face, but to pat the skin with fingertips, increasing the circulation and stimulating the cells but not dragging at it, think of it as a cloth, you wouldn’t pull at a cloth every day and not expect it to get saggy!
