PHYTODERMAL INSTITUTE OF BEAUTY
T
he PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty is the only one of its kind in Australia. It provides for students who are passionate about the environment and their clients’ wellbeing, and who want to embrace a career in natural beauty therapy. It was born of a dream, which all started 10 years ago when the founders secured the distribution in Australia of a French brand of professional organic products called PHYT’S. PHYT’S was a pioneer of the organic movement. It started in 1972 with only a handful of products in the range and now has more than 300 products, including makeup and nutritional supplements that form part of the beauty regimen. With distribution worldwide, PHYT’S is also Europe’s largest — and leading — distributor of professional organic products. At the time PHYT’S was created, “organic” was still considered a concept solely for New Age people, so it was an uphill battle to educate spas and salon owners to embrace this philosophy. However, gradually the company managed to demonstrate that good organic treatments and products are not only safer but also as effective as, if not better than, chemical products. Today, PHYT’S is proudly used by some of Australia’s best spas and health resorts. Organic is not just a passing trend; with the ever-increasing demand for natural products and in an industry changing at a phenomenal pace, the traditional beauty therapist needs to adapt or be left behind. The organic movement kicked into overdrive following the outbreaks of mad cow disease and avian bird flu in the 1990s (and more recently). The public outcry over genetically modified 18 | WELLBEING.COM.AU
organisms has also motivated people to search for healthy alternatives. The second half of the 20th century witnessed a massive increase in consumer demand for organic products, which vaulted the organic movement into the mainstream. The organic industry is now a force to be reckoned with in world trade. If the current annual growth rate of 23 per cent continues, it is possible the world’s agriculture will be fundamentally organic by 2020. However, there was still no beauty college in Australia that trained students to use organic products. The founders of the PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty tried to create an awareness of this need by approaching a number of beauty colleges — some of which claimed to be natural — with a view to introducing organic treatments. None of them had the vision to teach students how to embrace the emerging demand for holistic beauty and wellbeing. That is when Paul Massa decided he would one day establish a college that would use and advocate treatments that incorporated only natural and organic products, ban all chemicals, teach awareness of the environment and keep up with changing expectations and needs of clients globally. Massa and his team finally started the registration process two years ago. It was a difficult and tedious procedure to become a registered training organisation but the PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty was finally granted approval from the Australian Skills Quality Authority to train aspiring beauty therapists in all aspects of beauty and spa services. The only difference? It would do it without using any chemicals.
The PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty offers diploma or certificate qualifications in all aspects of beauty, with full-time, part-time and, soon, online study options. It also offers a series of short courses for qualified beauty therapists to enhance their holistic beauty skills, including nutrition and, for therapists who aspire to run their own business, courses on marketing, bookkeeping, social media etc. All qualifications are recognised nationally under the Australian Quality Training Framework. It recognises all previous certificates and qualifications. The PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty is aligned with what it teaches and is very careful with its environmental footprint. All housekeeping products, towels, cleaners etc are organic, where possible, or contain minimal chemicals. Sustainable beauty practices are generally part of everything the institute does and every course it offers. The institute’s trainers are fully qualified, with years of experience in both beauty and education, and are passionate about natural, holistic beauty. They attend to every student’s individual needs, development, aspirations and inspirations by giving personal attention; each class has a maximum of 10 students. The PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty offers an onsite student clinic, staffed by students under the teachers’ supervision. The clinic is open to the general public and allows students to be exposed to the real environment of a beauty salon. The PhytoDermal Institute of Beauty is in St Leonards, conveniently close to public transport, and some parking is available free of charge. T: +61 2 9906 1001 or 1300 656 627 W: phytodermal.edu.au

COME CHAI WITH ME
A
determination to shake up the tea industry through the application of naturopathic principles is reaping major rewards for naturopath and Endeavour College alumna Emma Watson through her booming organic tea business Love Chai Love Tea. Emma has spent the past seven years working with husband Damien Amos to build a range of 30 organic, Fairtrade tea blends and secure more than 150 stockists across the country, together with running a thriving online business. A focus on developing a unique herbal tea range with no preservatives, colours or sweeteners coupled with strong therapeutic benefits has seen Love Chai Love Tea’s growth triple in the past 12 months alone. “In essence we want to offer consumers interested in natural health an alternative by offering them access to therapeutic herbs to help alleviate their health conditions,” says Emma. “For those times where it isn’t feasible to see your naturopath or invest in supplements, we want consumers to have access to herbal blends of the highest quality that can help them on their journey towards maximum health.” The idea behind Love Chai Love Tea began in Emma’s second year of naturopathy studies, when she became consumed by the idea of making her own herbal teas. “I became really interested in chai blends and noticed that most of the products on the market were heavy black teas with lots of sugar and weren’t organic, so I started making my own,” she says. Watson shortly crossed paths with her future business partner in the form of her now husband Damien, who grew up on a biodynamic organic farm and had a strong interest in naturopathy himself. “I remember enjoying a cup of dandelion tea together and not being able to stop talking about my hopes to build a tea line based on the health principles I was learning about at Endeavour College,” Emma said. This led Damien to join her by enrolling to study naturopathy. The couple went on to develop their first organic, Fairtrade chai blend and tried their hand at securing local stockists. This involved holding taste-testing
after taste-testing to ensure their recipe had the right blend of therapeutic benefits and taste appeal. “When we had people tell us our chai blend was the closest they had tasted to the chai they had experienced in India, we took comfort that we were on the right track.” The couple has also invested in sustainable packaging, which ensures all aspects of the product are biodegradable and can be thrown straight into the compost. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with a raft of cafes, restaurants, giftstores and retail outlets signing up. The initial reception was so positive that Emma and Damien quickly moved
to develop two new chai blends. This was followed by a range of 12 different teas and the launch of their naturopathic range, which includes blends to help with everything from pregnancy, detox, breast feeding, menopause, skin health and sleep. This resulted in some of their most popular blends to date, including their Sleep Tea (which the couple’s daughter Arrabella has declared her favourite). Emma and Damien scored a major coup when grocery store giant IGA signed as a stockist followed by wholesaler Oborne Health Supplies, which sells Love Chai Love tea to naturopaths and health professionals. Love Chai Love Tea is also committed to its philanthropic partnership with One Percent for the Planet, a charity which encourages “When we had people tell us business to donate at least our chai blend was the closest 1 per cent of their revenue to some 2000 environmental they had tasted to the chai worldwide. they had experienced in India, organisations “We are sourcing our we took comfort that we were products from tea plantations around the world and it’s on the right track.” important for us to give back to those areas,” Emma says. When it comes to the future of Love Chai Love Tea, Emma has bold plans. “Besides making our tea accessible to more people by securing more stockists in Australia and across the world, we want to visit more tea plantations and uncover untouched herbs with great medicinal qualities we can use in new blends. “We want to provide the Love Chai healthiest, tastiest, most Love Tea founders sustainable and ethical tea blends Emma Watson and available for our customers to Damien Amos. share with the people they love.”

IKON INSTITUTE A day in the life of an art therapist
Photography Bigstock
M
y alarm goes off at 6.30am. I do my best to ignore it; however, it’s usually followed by my threeyear-old climbing excitedly on top of me, declaring, “It’s morning!” I grab a strong coffee and begin the morning dash of pack-ups and kindy. I hop on my bike and head to the studio. At this time of day I usually feel fortunate I chose four years ago to leave the private company where I worked as head of therapy and start my own practice. I’m grateful I can whizz to work in 20 minutes rather than face a long commute. I climb six flights of stairs to the sunfilled room and by 8.30am I’m sitting at my computer answering emails. I reply to the essential ones and plan my day. At 9.45am I wrap up my admin and prepare for my first client of the day. I set the room up to suit the client’s needs, then spend some time reviewing the previous session and remembering significant aspects that may be important for today. My 10am client is a young woman working on overcoming a history of physical and emotional abuse; she has moved away from her country of birth and is determined to make a new life for herself. During the session, the woman creates a vibrant red painting then slashes it with black charcoal. She is visible moved by the process and we talk about the art a little afterwards. She describes how angry she is with her mother for not protecting her, and how the red represents the anger and the blood connecting them. She talks about the confusion this causes her, to love and hate at the same time. We talk about how and to what extend people can defend themselves. I’m moved by her incredible strength to keep going and push through her challenges. I grab an early lunch at the local healthfood shop. I’m on a mission to remove sugar from my diet at the
moment as I’m increasingly aware of how blood sugar affects the mood. I always take an hour for lunch as I’m conscious of taking care of myself in this line of work. Then it’s back to the studio — I have a further three clients scheduled this afternoon. Many of the adults I work with have experienced trauma during childhood and are seeking a way to be less burdened by this. With art therapy there are no needs for words, no need to explain what happened or even to understand or make sense of it. Understanding tends to follow naturally when the images are made and looked at. I also work with children and young people, many who have become “shut off” and find communication through art much less confrontational than the pressure of talking. I often find that I’m working with children who are selfharming in some way and may have been given the label “challenging” or “disruptive” in home or educational
settings. Once the child’s behaviour has a way to be released during art therapy, their interaction with teachers and carers can often improve. I briefly catch up with a psychotherapy colleague who works in the office next door. It’s great to have a likeminded professional so close by; we frequently support each other. I write up my notes, lock up and head off on my bike. I’m at the kindy gates for pickup. Tonight I have an old friend coming over for dinner, so it’s a quick dash to the shops then home and cooking. Our night goes way over my normal bedtime so it’s almost midnight by the time I fall into bed. There is still time, though, to count my blessings as I am always thankful for choosing the path I did. THE FELDENKRAIS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA “It was a big decision — but it’s the best thing I ever did. I really enjoy learning and this is something I will stick with for a long time.” This is how Roger feels, halfway through his Feldenkrais training. He is discovering a career that will keep him feeling young and agile while others are retiring. Some people come to Feldenkrais as an addition to their current professions, so they can assist others more effectively. They work with children with developmental issues, kids with learning difficulties, adults recovering from injury or neurological disorders and performers wanting get even more out of themselves. Others come to Feldenkrais through their own experience of moving on from pain or limitation and wanting to help others to do likewise. Some come purely for their own development and a desire to move freely or avoid injury. The Feldenkrais Institute of Australia is a world leader in offering professional training programs. To become a practitioner, you will attend practical sessions where you immerse yourself in Awareness Through Movement® and practise the handling skills that will allow you to assist others. In between these sessions, your learning will be supported by online and home-study activities and discussion forums. The new practitioner programs will commence in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne in November 2014.
