Brief GuideLife A
to
by Leo Babauta
“A few strong instincts and a few plain rules suffice us.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
L
ife can be ridiculously complicated, if you let it. I suggest we simplify.
Thich Nhat Hanh’s quote is the shortest guide to life you’ll ever need: “Smile, breath, and go slowly.” If you live your life by those five words,
you’ll do pretty well. For those who need a little more guidance, I’ve distilled the lessons I’ve learned (so far) into a few guidelines, or reminders, really. And as always, these rules are meant to be broken. Life wouldn’t be any fun if they weren’t.
the brief guide: less TV, more reading
less driving, more walking
less shopping, more outdoors
less noise, more solitude
less clutter, more space
less focus on the future, more on the present
less rush, more slowness less consuming, more creating less junk, more real food less busywork, more impact
less work, more play less worry, more smiles breathe

Gratitude, Ultimate the
‘Happy Habit’ by WellBEing Jill
“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” ―Eckhart Tolle
I
begin this article with the quote above because it illustrates how the Universe always brings us an abundance of what we focus on, whether consciously or unconsciously. It’s simple: we’re always receiving an abundance of something, and like magic, gratitude draws to us our heart’s joy. That’s why practicing gratitude can be one of your most powerful allies in your efforts to consciously create a joyful and fulfilling life. The world’s great visionaries are always grateful – it’s the natural expression of alignment with your highest self.
“The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth, dwelling deeply in the present moment and feeling truly alive.” ―Thích Nhất Hạnh The above quote shows how gratitude and presence reinforce each other, because when we are fully present, we are able to see the perfection in life. When we do this magic happens, because what we focus on expands. Expressing and feeling gratitude can be done in the form of writing, speaking, creating, as well as consciously acknowledging the gifts in your world and everyday interactions. The secret is to do it often enough that it becomes a habit. Gratitude really is the ultimate ‘happy habit!’ Make it part of your daily life, and watch the magic unfold. “When you focus on gratitude, positive things flow in more readily, making you even more grateful.” ―Lissa Rankin iLoveWellBEing.com

Talk therapy is very important, but sometimes words alone can’t heal psychic wounds. Sometimes emotional experiences get stuck in our bodies, causing distress. Feel lost walking the endless aisles at the health food store? Wish there was an easier way to achieve optimum health? There is! Dr Andrea McCreery at Life Sources®, Inc has been practicing the art and science of Vital Hematology (living blood microscopy), while incorporating Targeted Nutritional Intervention with astounding results since 1999. Dr. McCreery is able to examine a single drop of blood taken painlessly from the client’s finger and observe this miraculous fluid of life in real time. Dr. McCreery states, “Each person’s health needs are as different as we are individually. What we need nutritionally is fundamentally based upon our age, gender, genetics, diet, exercise and stress levels, which change constantly throughout our lives. In order to determine our client’s nutritional needs, we need to closely examine the one essential life giving substance that carries oxygen and nutrients to every single part of our bodies – our blood. Keep It Moving...
Naturally
M
by WellBEing Jill
Most of us have struggled with “slow going” in the digestive department at one time or another. Following are some simple, effective ways to keep the gut happy, healthy, and regular, so your body can hum along like the well-oiled machine it’s meant to be.
Here are some ongoing practices to incorporate: • More veggies! Lightly steamed, stir fried, or blended raw with frozen fruit in smoothies are all great ways to get a healthy dose of fiber. • Probiotics are an excellent way to support the friendly bacteria that make it possible for our gut to function optimally. While supplements are easy to find in most health food stores, ingesting a variety of traditional fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, and miso provides a comparable benefit and in their most natural form. • Start your day by drinking a large glass of warm spring water + the juice of a lemon 30 minutes before ingesting anything else. The most important time of day to drink water is first thing in the morning, when your body is most dehydrated. • Give your gut a chance to rest by taking a monthly, or weekly if possible, ‘de-

“Laughter is a most healthful exertion; it is one of the greatest helps to digestions with which I am acquainted.” ~Christopher Wilhelm Hufeland tox day’. Infuse a gallon of spring water with a sliced cucumber, two sliced lemons, a handful of small mint leaves, and a cup of aloe vera juice. Drink this water throughout the day, and consume only easy to digest foods that day such as kitchari and green juices. • Any exercise that gets the blood flowing and body moving can be helpful for digestion, Yoga included as it can help detoxify and gently ‘squeeze’ the organs, cleansing and relaxing them. To release gas and support elimination, lie on your back and hug knees to chest, then slowly move your knees in a circle from right to left (clockwise). • Have pleasant conversations (or none at all), positive thoughts, and beautiful views as you enjoy a meal... as the energy of these are absorbed into the body along with your food! Additionally, try one or two of the following “get moving” practices each week to determine what works best for you: • Soak 1 tablespoons of chia seeds in an 8 oz cup of water or juice for 15-20 minutes. Drink the mixture at bedtime. • Soak 2 tablespoons of flaxseed over-
night. Eat the seeds the next morning, being sure to chew thoroughly. • Put equal amounts of dried figs, prunes, and raisins into a pot, add apple juice or water, and cover. Cook on low heat to a soft consistency. Eat a couple spoonfuls of the resulting compote several hours before bed. • Triphala is an ayurvedic supplement that has long been prescribed for constipation; it can be found in powdered or capsule forms at most health food stores as well as online. Take a dose at bedtime on an empty stomach, with plenty of water. • Consider a colon hydrotherapy session! See page 40 for WellBEing featured practitioners. The benefits of smooth digestion include improved energy, abdominal comfort, nutrient absorption, and detoxification. Taking care of your gut is well worth the time and effort, because when it’s happy, you’re happy. With the simple steps outlined here as part of your healthy lifestyle, you’ll be well on your way to both inner and outer renewal. iLoveWellBEing.com

Self Parenting Self-Parenting (book)
by Dr. John Pollard
Self-Parenting describes the “inner conversations” inside your mind between two voices; your “Inner Child” (who you were as a child even though now an adult), and your “Inner Parent” (the way your parents parented you during childhood). Today, you currently selfparent your Inner Child, the same way that your parents parented you! If you had toxic outerparenting, then these damaging and hurtful patterns are perpetuated as blocks to your thinking and goals, problems with food, sex, work, relationships, and various other emotional stressors. Self-Parenting is the breakthrough book introducing the recovery movement to the dynamics of the Inner Child. It teaches a daily practice showing you positive ways to love, support, and nurture your Inner Child in today’s hectic world. Online or available at Sunlight of the Spirit Bookstore, 2314 J St, Sacramento. (Bio pgs. 26, 89) Also visit www.SelfParenting.com

Mindfullness:
A Practice and a

ore and more people are turning to mindfulness as a way to reduce their stress and anxiety. As it becomes more accepted in the medical community, people are becoming more open to trying mindfulness as a natural alternative to medication for purposes of remedying stress-related illnesses & conditions. Mindfulness is not only a way to reduce stress and anxiety, but also a way to:
Enhance one’s spiritual life and sense of unity with others and the universe. Mindfulness can be described as a detached, present-moment awareness of one’s own thoughts and emotions; However, the definition alone does very little to describe what the actual practice of mindfulness entails. A fruitful mindfulness practice contains a healthy balance between meditation, contemplation, mindfulness exercises, and present moment awareness. Those who practice mindfulness perceive the world around them in a way that is harmonious and synchronized. They cultivate a quiet mind and a peaceful heart that allows them to adapt to the present moment as it unfolds without resistance. They tend to be less hurried and approach life’s hurdles with poise and decisiveness. They work when its time to

Re-Boot Epsom with

by Nicole Mark
Salts!
often surprise clients when I recommend they take a hot bath with Epsom salts to refresh their mind, body and spirit. It may sound crazy, but that $4 carton of salts you have stored in your cupboard may be the ticket for a quick, inexpensive pick-me-up in times of trouble!
Epsom salts are a pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate, both of which are more easily absorbed through the skin than the stomach. Our magnesium levels have dropped significantly in the last century due to farming practices that have depleted magnesium from the soil, in addition to diets high in fat, sugar, salt, and protein *all of which cause magnesium insufficiency). Replenishing your magnesium and sulfate levels can: Improve heart & circulatory health, improve use of insulin, reduce toxins, flush heavy metals, improve nerve function by electrolyte regulation, restore calcium levels, increase serotonin (mood lifting & stress reducing), reduce inflammation and pain, improve nutrient absorption, improve formation of brain tissue, and reduce migraine headaches. The next time you are feeling tired, toxic, depressed, achy, stressed or sick: Simply dissolve 2-6 cups of Epsom salts, depending on the severity of your symptoms, in a hot bath. Soak for as long as you can tolerate it, re-warming the bath often and rehydrating as needed. After your soak you will likely enjoy a fresh perspective, a rejuvenated body, and a deeper connection to the spirit!

Sweet Potato Coconut Curry Soup (serves 4-6) A rustic and warming soup that is vegan, gluten, and soy free with a triple dose of coconut! 2 Tablespoon Coconut Oil 3 Cloves Fresh Garlic, finely chopped
2 Large Sweet Potatoes, peeled & cut into a medium dice 2 Tablespoon Yellow Curry Paste
1 Medium Onion, chopped
1 14oz. can Coconut Milk
1 Shallot, finely chopped
2 Cups Vegetable Stock
1 Red Bell Pepper, sliced
1 Teaspoon Sea Salt
1 Tablespoon Grated Ginger 2 Carrots, sliced
I Tablespoon Coconut Sugar (omit if watching sugar intake)
Small stalk of celery, sliced thin
1/4 Cup Cilantro
Directions: Heat coconut oil in a large soup pot. Add onions, garlic, shallots, red pepper and ginger; cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add sweet potatoes, carrots, and celery; cook an additional 5 minutes. Open coconut milk and pour a little from the can into a small bowl. Add curry paste and whisk together. Add curry mixture to pot and stir well. Add remaining coconut milk and vegetable stock. Stir constantly for a few minutes to fully incorporate liquids. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until sweet potatoes are soft and tender. Remove from heat and add cilantro. Will keep in the fridge up to a week.
Note from Jill: This dish is excellent with added, or on top of, quinoa or rice! Thank you to Sugar Plum Vegan

Andrea McCreery, PhD, CMAT, CNC Life Sources®, Inc. Wellness Center 916-536-9930 • Fair Oaks A Holistic Approach to Chronic Illnesses, Autism, & other Pervasive Development Disorders. At Life Sources® Inc., since 1999, Dr. Andrea McCreery has been utilizing a Holistic Approach to all Chronic Illnesses including her recent discovery for reversing symptoms for Autism and Asperger’s known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs). Her high-powered binocular microscope at 1500xs magnification has a proven track record of success in solving the body’s health mysteries. From the common cold to Mycoplasma infections which are at the root cause of all autoimmune disorders, she simplifies health by explaining, educating, and empowering many discouraged people who have lost their Wellness, Energy, & Vitality. Andrea will guide you step by step, helping to achieve your goals. The analysis of your blood, taken painlessly from the finger, is placed on a slide where results are projected onto a large video monitor, creating your “window to a hidden world”. The client can see exactly what is happening within their immune system contributing to their illness symptoms. These cells are then analyzed and the “dots are connected”. This approach to Targeted Nutritional Intervention takes around an hour; explaining those sometimes vague and inconsistent symptoms. From this evaluation, she puts together an easy to follow Individualized Nutritional Health Plan. Her clients feel very comfortable in her laid back & extremely friendly office. n the chaos of the modern world, there is a beauty in simply doing.
We’re buffeted wildly by whatever emails, conversations, news, events, demands, that are going on around us. Our minds become a constant deluge of thoughts dwelling in the past, worries of the future, distractions pulling us in every direction. But all of that melts away when we focus on just doing. It doesn’t matter what the doing is: sitting, walking, writing, reading, eating, washing, talking, snuggling, playing. By focusing on the doing, we drop our worries and anxieties, jealousies and anger, grieving and distraction.

“Yoga is not just repetition of few postures - it is more about the exploration and discovery of the subtle energies of life.”―
—Amit Ray Through my 10+ years of practice, I’ve personally experienced increased selfworth and joy, improved sleep and skin clarity, hormonal balancing, greater connection, and an overall sense of wellbeing and calm. These benefits appeared soon after I started to practice, and have fluctuated depending on the consistency of my practice. My favorite yoga styles are gentle ones that focus on breath, presence, and balance (such as traditional hatha yoga), as well as yummy restorative styles that allow me to sink into the supportive props and simply BE. With the variety of styles offered, I truly believe everyone can find one that suits them and experience the many benefits of yoga. One of the beautiful things about yoga and other presence practices are that they really can fit into any schedule or lifestyle. Scheduling yoga on your calendar, as well as keeping a mat and yoga clothing in your car, can really help with consistency.
about their favorite styles and the personal benefits they’ve received from their practice: “My favorite style is Laughter Yoga! It helps lift my mood and my energy!” Kathleen Hering • KathleenHeringHNP.com “My favorite style is the traditional Ashtanga practice, composed of Primary and Secondary Series poses. They provide a complete body toning and stretch! My practice gives me a constant connection to my body and its needs. Keeping the body open to movement of all kinds keeps me feeling young and strong.” Jim Cahill • PracticeYogaSac.com “My favorite style is Hatha yoga. “Words cannot convey the value of yoga – it has to be experienced.”
—BKS Iyengar Another great practice for overall wellbeing is taking short ‘presence breaks’ throughout the day to Be Here Now. Below are some simple practices you can do to reconnect with your body and quiet your mind. As with yoga, the more consistently you practice with focus and awareness, the more benefits you’ll start to notice. • Sit with eyes gently closed and focus on the breath without trying to change it in any way. Doing this for just one minute can really clear your mind and spirit. • Anytime you notice you’re “thinking too much” or feeling the sensations of muscles tensing, shoulders lifting, and/ or hands clenching: Consciously relax the body and take a deep breath to return to presence. • My favorite of all: Hang in “standing forward bend” for a minute or longer while breathing deeply (see Yogajournal.com/poses/478). As you slowly stand back up, you’ll notice a renewed sense of calm, rejuvenation, and beauty!
• Take time to sip warm water throughout the day. This has been prescribed since ancient times for health maintenance by Taoist medicine practitioners. For variety, try organic herbal teas or add fresh-squeezed lemon juice to give your water some zing. Yoga is for everyone, so begin practicing today and watch your life transform.

• Take a ‘gratitude walk’ in nature. Walk with the intention of noticing things you are grateful for, both in your surroundings and in your inner world. A short stroll can do wonders for your attitude and energy level.
Breathe. {by Leo Babuata}
If you feel overwhelmed, breathe. It will calm you and release the tensions. If you are worried about something coming up, or caught up in something that already happened, breathe. It will bring you back to the present.
If you are moving too fast, breathe. It will remind you to slow down, and enjoy life more. Breathe, and enjoy each moment of this life. They’re too fleeting and few to waste. iLoveWellBEing.com

Acupuncture The Chinese practice of gently inserting fine needles into the body at specific points to cure disease, relieve pain, and balance the energy systems in the body.
Biofeedback Quantum biofeedback is a computerized energetic device that detects and assesses imbalances in the body, then emits healthy, balancing frequencies back to the body. It works by reducing the stresses on a body at the electro-magnetic level caused by food, toxins, hormones, nutrient deficiencies, allergies, parasites, emotions, environment, genetics, and lifestyle. The system searches for stress patterns in the body and then administers appropriate therapies to help the body correct any imbalances found.
Anthroposophic Medicine: A holistic and human-centered approach to medicine that uses all of the tools of conventional medicine, as well as aspects of spiritual science to assess each individual as a whole entity: physical body, life force, spirit and individual soul quality. Dreamwork Dreams contain metaphorical, symbolic, and archetypal language and images. Many are multilevel, with messages relevant to various aspects of one’s being: physical health, emotional well-being, and soul level. Dreams may contain literal information about potential future paths. Dreamwork explores meanings of dreams and reveals how the different layers relate to one’s life. The dreamer is the authority on the meaning(s) of the dream; the dreamworker(s) offer insights using the “if this were my dream” format. Shamanistic dreamwork includes shamanic journeying on the dream images. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) An advanced, rapid therapy approach for stress-related symptoms, traumatic memories, and to shift core beliefs. With bilateral stimulation of both sides of the brain, EMDR allows the brain to reprocess the experience and go for a healthy resolution. The eye movements process the unconscious material like what is happening in REM or dream sleep and unlock the nervous system which allows re-integration of positive information and outcome. Your own brain with this technology does the healing and you are in control. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Uses elements of Cognitive Therapy and Exposure Therapy, and combines them with Acupressure, in the form of fingertip tapping on 12 acupuncture points. Writing Mind & TO CLEAR YOUR

“Tears are words that need to be written.” ―Paulo Coelho
T
oo often we feel trapped and overwhelmed by our own thinking, even to the point of tears. When this happens, I find that one of the best ways to reduce stress and quiet the mind is to simply get all those thoughts out on paper. It’s amazing how writing down your thoughts can quite literally clear your head, creating space for joy, freedom, solutions, and genius to arise. Once you’ve cleared your mind, you can bring new insights through on paper as well. “Perhaps I write for no one. Perhaps for the same person children are writing for when they scrawl their names in the snow.” ―Margaret Atwood Just put pen to paper and write whatever is on your mind. Remember, no one ever needs to see it. You can even destroy it when you’re done... and you should if what comes out is mostly negative. There’s no reason to leave that energy lying around. If you hear your to-do list shouting at you when you’re trying to sleep, take a moment to write down what needs to be done, so your mind can let go and rest. As my friend Brian Taylor says, thoughts are like airplanes flying around in your head. Writing down your thoughts “lands the planes”, helping you to feel more grounded and giving you a sense of freedom and lightness. “I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.” ―Anne Frank
