THURSDAY 25TH APRIL BRECHT MASTERCLASS WITH NICK O’BRIEN 2:30pm, G.W. Annenberg A step by step, exercise driven workshop using the key elements of Brechtian technique to build towards creating epic theatre. For the first part of the workshop students explore Brechtian exercises. For the second part of the workshop students create a unique piece of epic theatre either using text or stimulus material.

TUESDAY 30TH APRIL MASTERCLASS WITH ALEX AITKEN 2pm, Cultural Living Room An opportunity for students who perform musical theatre repertoire to work with, and be coached by, Alex Aitken – one of National Youth Music Theatre’s Musical Directors.

TUESDAY 30TH APRIL MASTERCLASS WITH BEN CASTLE 2pm, Old Gym We welcome back Jazz musician, Ben Castle, to join Wellington students for a woodwind Masterclass. Ben has had many career highs including playing as a backing musician for Blur, Radiohead, Sting, George Michael and Paloma Faith. Ben co-wrote the album Little Dreamer with singer Beth Rowley which debuted at number 6 in the UK’s Official Album Charts. Ben plays both the saxophone and clarinet and is a great entertainer, captivating his audience while performing.


THURSDAY 2ND MAY COMPOSITION MASTERCLASS WITH TOBY YOUNG 1:30pm, Music Library Award-winning composer, producer, and researcher Toby Young’s work explores the boundaries between pop music, classical music and sonic art. An afternoon masterclass for composers will be followed by a 5pm lecture, hosted jointly with the PhilThy Society entitled “What is beauty”.

THURSDAY 6TH JUNE VOICE MASTERCLASS WITH RODERICK WILLIAMS 2pm, Concert Room We wlcome back Roderick Williams MBE to hold a singing masterclass with students from Wellington and other schools. Roderick performs a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary music, in the opera house, on the concert platform and in recital. He won the Singer of the Year Award in the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and was awarded the OBE for services to music in June 2017. Roderick Williams is also a composer and has had works premiered at the Wigmore and Barbican Halls, the Purcell Room and live on national radio.


THURSDAY 27TH JUNE ORGAN MASTERCLASS WITH DANIEL MOULT 1pm, Chapel One of the leading organists of his generation, Daniel Moult, Head of Organ Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and international concert artist, visits Wellington to work with organ students on technique and interpretation. At the end of the afternoon, he will perform a short recital. Daniel has pioneered the use of film to promote the music of the organ, has made many recordings and broadcasts, and performs around the world both as a soloist and ensemble player.


Welcome to Artsfull, our brochure introducing Arts events at Wellington College which aim to teach, inspire and enrich your understanding of the Arts. Each term we will be providing opportunities for students to have short lessons/workshops with inspiring artists. Book early if you wish to be involved. Each term there will be events, shows and concerts either put on by students at Wellington or by other schools or professionals. Whatever is on, you will be most welcome. GWA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION CULTURAL LIVING ROOM We are proud to present a diverse range of pictures by students studying Photography across the exam years. The work presented incorporates landscape, figurative and abstracted imagery through chemical, digital and experimental techniques.

V&A THIRD FORM ART EXHIBITION V&A Café The walls of the V&A are decorated this term with vibrant artworks by our 3rd Form. This is a marked celebration of some of the achievements our youngest artists have made this year. Do take a look at the collection of prints, collage and drawings.

TOBY YOUNG LECTURE “WHAT IS BEAUTY” 5pm, Concert Room Award-winning composer, producer, and researcher Toby Young jointly hosts a lecture entitled “What is Beauty” with the PhilThy Society.

MONTGOMERY SINGING COMPETITION 7:30pm, Waterloo Hall The Montgomery Solo Singers’ Competition Final is the second in our series of Montgomery competitions this year.The Montgomery prize was founded in 1964 by Brigadier A. H. Montgomery to mark his gratitude to the Music School on the departure from the College of his son, James.We are delighted to welcome Joanna Forbes L’Estrange to adjudicate.


TUESDAY 7TH MAY

ANTIPHONAL MUSICKS CONCERT 5:30pm, Front Quad A concert celebrating the coming of the summer term. We will be performing antiphonal music celebrating the glory of Venice and music from Germany and England written in the height of the Renaissance. Directed by Jonathan Heeley and Ray Smith, Wellington College Symphonic Brass and Drum Corps will be performing works by Sustato, Gabrielli, Byrd and Scheidt in, around and on top of the front quad.This will be a unique concert not to be missed.

9TH -10TH MAY

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS 7:30pm, G.W. Annenberg The Junior school present the production of Little Shop of Horrors. For the misfits of Skid Row, life is full of broken dreams and dead ends. But there’s hope on the horizon for flower shop assistant, Seymour (Jasper Kirkby), when he discovers a mysterious new plant with killer potential. Will his newfound fame and fortune win the attention of kind, sweet, delicate Audrey (Lizzie Webster)? Can he finally break free and be happy…whatever the consequences?

FRIDAY 24TH MAY EVE OF SPEECH DAY CONCERT, FEATURING THE WELLINGTON COLLEGE ORCHESTRA 7:30pm, Combermere Quad “Bring a deck chair, a rug or anything to sit on and come and listen to some light music provided by Wellington College’s Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra, right in the heart of the college. Parents, pupils and friends from the local community are welcome to this annual event which starts off the Speech Day weekend celebrations, and raises money for local charities.There is a cash bar available, and fish and chips will be served in the dining hall.”


THURSDAY 6TH JUNE

SHAKESPEARE IN THE MASTER’S GARDEN 7:30pm, Master’s Lodge Garden What could be more quintessentially British than open-air Shakespeare on a pleasant evening in June? Whilst the Drama Department can’t control the weather, we can assure you that you will be treated to some classic Shakespearean scenes, speeches and poetry! This evening celebrates the talents of our Drama Scholars who will all be performing, as well as a number of other keen thespians. So, get your ticket, pack the picnic and we look forward to welcoming you to the tranquil setting of the Master’s Lodge Gardens.


FRIDAY 7TH JUNE MONTGOMERY JUNIOR INSTRUMENTAL COMPETITION 7:30pm, Waterloo Hall The Junior Montgomery Instrumental Competition is the final competition in our series of Montgomery competitions. This competition is for students in the 3rd and 4th form and the standard is above Grade 6 level. This year we are delighted to welcome Anthony Williams, Head of instrumental Music at Radley College to adjudicate. Following international competition success Anthony embarked on a career as a concert pianist whilst also establishing an international reputation as a piano teacher and has since become a passionate educator of pianistic musicianship at all ages from beginner to advanced.This is always an outstanding opportunity to see the emerging talent in the school.

FESTIVAL OF EDUCATION CONCERT: RATS! 7:30pm, G.W. Annenberg

Tickets £5

As part of the Festival of Education 2019, we welcome up to 200 primary school students from the local area.They will perform songs from the Musical RATS! By Nigel Hess.The show takes a new look at the Pied Piper of Hamelin, casting familiar characters in a new light.Within the concert, there will be music from other Ensembles from Berkshire Maestros and a unique Musical Theatre collaboration with other schools.

We are delighted to welcome the 11 year old winner of the Junior Yehudi Menhuin competition. Christian Li began learning the violin at the age of 5 and studies under Dr. Robin Wilson, Head of Violin at the Austrailian National Music Academy in Melbourne. He will perform ‘Summer’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with an ensemble of Wellington musicians, as well as a range of violin masterworks, accompanied by Gordon Back.
